The ship and staff were great. Food was fantastic and entertainment top notch. J.C. the cruise director was great as was Marc production cast director and the production cast. Room steward Jun was amazing. We received excellent service in all venues. The NCL shore excursions were exactly as described and we'll done. The service desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall, this was our best NCL cruise ever, number 11. Our embarkation was non eventful and we walked right on, our disembarkation was the same. We recommend coming to Venice a few days early to explore the city and take care of any jet lag as there is little down time during the cruise. We feel we got value for our travel dollar. We strongly recommend this itinerary, we are thinking it will change a little next year as the Venice cruise restrictions required the skipping of Motor, but we never missed it because of the superior ship and crew. Let's start with the great.... the entertainment was off the charts, much superior to any other cruise we have taken, all STELLAR! Embarkation and debarkation were organized and a breeze. The food and service was best in the specialty restaurant Sabatinnis. If you love Italian food, don't miss it. There were plenty of choices in the Speciality restaurants and although we did not try them all, we heard from other guests that they were all excellent. Elevators did not accommodate the massive numbers of guest and wait time was long. Be careful with shore excursions which are not created equal. Also, when you pick an excursion that includes your meal, you give up your ability to pick a great restaurant and are forced to a prix fix that was menza mens. That should not happen when you have one day in Italy.... a slice of chicken breast would not have been my pick. All in all, it was probably the best week of my life, perfect weather and magnificent Ports helped. The most difficult part was leaving. Read Less

The ship was beautiful, very sturdy and we'll maintained. The staff in general were excellent, the service good, but the food was a real let down. It was either bland or too salty and overcooked. The Britannia restaurant was poor so was the buffet on the Lido deck. So disappointing. Of the three cruise lines I have travelled on this was the poorest. My accessible cabin was wonderful, everything I asked for was there. The three companions I was with were happy with the service and the cruise generally. I I did not book any excursions as I travelled with a mobility scooter. The first shuttle bus was acceptable and helpful but at Lanzarote my companions and I boarded the bus and were dumped at the end of the new port. (Why go to a place closed on Sunday?) There were no shops or cafes available, and we were told we had to walk 20 minutes into town to see if anything was open. Alternatively we could risk taking a 20 minute taxi to the other side of the island to a possibly open market. As we did not know if we could get back we just got back on the bus and stayed on the ship. Overall very disappointing. Read Less

I chose this cruise for its amazing itinerary which was going to 3 places I hadn't visited before. Embarkation in Rome was smooth & fast. I had stayed overnight at the Hilton Garden Hotel near the airport so I could take the NCL shuttle to the port & it worked out well. I really liked the hotel which included a nice breakfast, had a free shuttle to the airport & a nice restaurant so I would stay there again. The safety drill was held inside so that was good. I had obstructed oceanview cabin 8558 (easy number to remember) which was in a good location except for one possible negative which was the noise from Bliss could be heard in the cabin but only until 11:00 pm. It was nice to have O'Sheehans just along he hall & the theatre & Bliss just down one flight of stairs. My steward, who left in Valletta, was great & supplied me with lots of towel animals which I'd requested & ice every day. I use the water from the ice bucket to fill my water bottle each day. The meals on the ship were very good. I ate some breakfasts & lunches at O'Sheehans, but mostly used the MDRs , room service breakfast once & the buffet a couple of breakfasts. I like to be served. I preferred the smaller Alizar dining room to the Grand Pacific & asked for seating for 2 in the back part which I find less noisy. The tables were close enough that I could converse with people beside me if they wanted as I was travelling solo. Oh that reminds me there was a hosted solo meeting the 1st 2 nights of the cruise but not after since it was so port intensive. I did meet a couple of ladies who I shared my platinum meals with & attended shows together along with a solo male a few times. One strange thing this cruise was there was never a line at the internet cafe. The man there was helpful so I stopped by a few times. I always get internet as my perk as I travel solo so want to keep in touch with DH back home & post pictures on social media. That brings me to entertainment which was not as good as on other bigger ships I've been on IMO. I enjoy the production numbers but don't care for individual acts like magicians, singers & aerialists. There was no comedy at all on this cruise. The CD Dave & his staff were good. Oh another thing lacking was Dancing with the Stars which is usually such a hoot! There also wasn't much in the way of tv. I enjoyed the shore excursion presentation where Barbie mentionned to go out on deck port side around 8:45pm when leaving Messina to see the volcano erupting. I did & it did about every 6 or so minutes. I enjoyed the trivias except when Geo did them lol, they were too hard. It was fun to watch him leading the exercise class before 9:30 trivia. On the Jade they use the card system for events were you get signatures instead of prizes which you decide at the end depending on how many points you earn. I did buy a couple of FCCs & booked a TA cruise for April 2021, another cruise with an amazing, to me, itinerary. I also bought a couple of photos & liked that this small ship had the folder system so you didn't have to look all over the place for your pictures. This was a very port intensive cruise with only 1 sea day so busy busy! I got a sore throat so took it easy cancelling a couple of shore excursions & not getting off at a couple of places I'd already been to saving myself for the last day when I would visit Cinque Terre on a 9 1/2 hour tour. This is a place I've really wanted to see for ages & finally have! I chose purple luggage tags for disembarking at 9:15 but it was so smooth we got off the ship an hour before! I had purchased a private transfer to Rome airport with a Cruise Critic member & that worked out well. Must shout out to Darla & Rick who ran a really fun & efficient Meet & Greet supplying us with magnets of our trip. She also arranged several private excursions which turned out really nicely. After the cruise I spent one night at Fiumicino AIrport Deluxe 47 B&B which was cheap, offered a breakfast & a low cost shuttle. It was in a residential area & close to some shops so that was nice for finding a pizza place. This was the 1st time I'd had airport lounge access at both Toronto & Rome & was impressed with what they offered even though both were a little hard to find. This was an amazing cruise & I'm so happy I got to do it. Read Less

We have cruised with this cruise line several times. We had always had a good experience but since our last cruise I am a vegetarian and can only comment on the lack of vegetarian options are atrocious Lack lustre curry stir fried vegetables fried rice , or salad were the only option for meals and so the only meal worth looking forward to was breakfast There are no vegan options either. We met really lovely people, entertained by the Acoustic Soul brothers excellent!! And the piano virtuoso Ian West who tinkled the ivories like a legend. Some of the stops were by tender and can be slightly precarious for older persons however the staff were always helpful, some of the stops had very steep slopes so looking at the shore excursions need to be considered before booking The ship itself had a good variety of entertainment great swimming pool and cheerful staff. We chose this cruise for the itinerary, and it did not disappoint. We knew the ship was tired and would be going into dry dock for retrofit. But I loved the size and layout of the Spirit. The staff and crew overall was amazing. The ship was clean and well kept. The entertainment was very good to boring, but overall good. The Soul Sound Brothers were great and the Elements Show as I have seen on other NCL ships was excellent. Other shows in the theatre should either cut out the fog machine or use It lightly, as it was a distraction. However I was disappointed with the gift shops having over priced items and the extra 20% vat. We have never experienced that on other Mediterranean Cruises. The food was a little disappointing. We noticed cheaper less tender cuts of meat. Over cooked fish and the seafood was really so small. Too much repetitive in the menu. The vegetables, salad and fruit was plentiful and fresh. The last day of the cruise a new dessert was introduced, a Kula cream tart which was Devine. Hope they will keep it on the menu. The Asian restaurant and buffet were good, but there again disappointed in the meat carving as the cuts of meat were poor and repeated too often. We also noticed the linens on the bed were older and thin, not like other NCL ships. Hopefully this will be corrected after it is retrofitted. The specialty restaurants prices have gone up, or become a la cart so we didn’t bother, which was disappointing as we were celebrating our 50 Th Anniversary and wanted a special meal to celebrate. We treated ourselves to two special meals in Athensand Santorini instead. Read Less

We chose this cruise primarily for one reason, no young kids, no casinos, no water slides, no discos. Viking is about 1st class cruising without the carnival atmosphere so many of the big ships are into these days. The ship was perfect. Every crew member speaks to you no matter their job or class. The food was excellent and just a wonderful experience in whole. With the smaller ocean ships of Viking you can get into ports that many of the mega ships cannot. We woke up one morning and looked out our window to see Monte Carlo. WOW what a view that left us breathless. Viking has for sure found their niche catering to older adults. We could be walking out on the deck and run upon a crew member doing maintenance. They would always speak to us and that says something about Viking and its training of crew. If you like a circus then maybe another cruise line is best for you. If you like perfection on a ship that is spotless without all the circus atmosphere then Viking is definitely for you as it was for us. Read Less

We chose Viking from reading many reviews from this and other cruise lines. The ship, cabin, dining, service, crew's attitude, and excursions were all exceptional. We were pleasantly surprised with the size and comfort of our cabin. The ship is beautiful and clean and we could always find a quiet place to sit by ourselves and have a glass of wine. We applaud the hand sanitizers and sinks, soap, and towels outside all restaurants. The food and service were excellent in all the restaurants. We went on the galley tour and marvel at the efficiency and cleanliness of the kitchens. We also went on the bridge tour and were amazed to see how the ship is sailed. The excursions were very organized and ran with great precision. The entire staff and crew were always friendly and pleasant, with a smile on their face. We enjoyed sailing on a "smaller" ship and we are now planning a river cruise and possibly another small ship sea cruise with Viking. Read Less

Good itinerary and reasonable price! Food was rather ordinary. No special nights like they have on other cruise lines. One night food was so bad ( rubber chicken) that I just refused to eat it. Ship was somewhat tired in many areas. Service in the dining room and bars was terrific. Room service was below par. Washroom dirty when we checked in and we never really had communication with our steward. He neglected to report the lights out in our washroom and we had to report it twice more to get something done. Would think twice before cruising with Norwegian again even with their good price. Nice to be on a somewhat smaller ship but this one needs to be refurbished. Shore excursions were fairly good , but you can usually do better by arranging your own through web pages etc. All in all I would call this a satisfactory but not great cruise which was saved by the great itinerary. Itinerary went to several ports we had visited before and would enjoy again and three that we had never visited and wished to. Everything about the ship is "first class." Clean everywhere; good food in all public restaurants; good entertainment; very friendly and helpful personnel. I got it in my mind that NCL does a superb job of hiring the perfect personality types to be constantly engaged with the public and trains them well. Our second trip on the Pearl and same experience both times. What I did not like and found to be negative was ten dollars (with mandatory 20% gratuity) for a glass of good but ordinary wine and eight bucks for a bottle of BUD or similar. They've got you captive and use the advantage. Prices in shops not so hot. My wife bought a bottle of Dolce &Gabana cologne for 85 euros. Found the same in Rome Airport "duty free" (notorious for hyping "duty free" and "tax free" in order to imply low prices, for 77 euros. Again, when one is captive, the benefits of competition go out the window (or porthole, if you will). This is our second cruise on the Pearl and both times we selected a "window stateroom" and would up with a fifteen inch diameter porthole. The room was roomy enough with the beds separated and each against opposing walls. Ship renovated since our first cruise in 2015. TV had been upgraded to a 32 inch Samsung and we had several watchable channels including Fox News US version. Big improvement from our SF-Miami cruise in fall of 2015. Excursions were problematic. We purchased five through NCL. In general the destinations were heavily overcrowded and the various tours did not allow for enough time at destinations to really shop and sightsee. Overcrowding was a surprise because this was an end of season Med cruise for the Pearl which went on to the Caribbean after we got off in Rome. Choice of slot machines in casino was unimaginative and we found very few that we found familiar based on our experiences in several California "Indian casinos." Read Less

This cruise had all the sites we wanted to visit However, some ship personnel don't know were the rest is and ask Bar Tenders where it is. When I ask the stateroom attendant to please change the towels, he foes into this big lecture about leaving towels on floor to change, I don't need this idiot. I purchase the drink package and was being charged for water, freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee. I don't like being penny pinched by Norwegian, other cruise lines don't do this. The food in the main dinning room and indigo could be a lot better. When making my reservations , I spoke to two Norwegian agents about the Bogo Gratuity offer and I agreed to take it. When I got on board, I found it wasn't done and was forced to pay the higher 15 dollar a day amount. Outrageous. Unless Norwegian sizable compensation, I will be looking else ware for my cruises. An amazing cruise exposing us to new areas that we definitely want to return to for a longer vacation. The ship, the service, the food and itinerary were just perfect for us. We liked that we were in a different port in a different part of the world every day. We took several ship organized tours which were very well done and provided us with background information on the sites we were visiting. By using the ships tours we always were assured that we would be back in time for the ships departure or if something did happen that the ship would wait on our return. Free style dining was also a hit with us. Being able to dress, go for a drink and enjoy some of the many entertainment venues without worrying about being to dinner at a certain time was great. Some days we toured and had a light lunch and were ready for dinner early and other days we ended up eating after we returned to the ship at 8 or later. All in all this was a great cruise that is at the top of our list of all the cruises we've taken. Read Less

Norwegian Star Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Sept 27 – Oct 6 This was our fourth NCL cruise and we found the clean and comfortable accommodations, friendly staff, good food and great entertainment to be consistent with our other cruises. We stayed in an inside cabin and I will say I did miss the balcony. Embarkation and debarkation went very smoothly for us. We dined in 3 specialty restaurants, Cagney’s, The Bistro and La Cucina and found the food in these restaurants was definitely a cut above the inclusive selections. However, we did find the size quite small and the ambiance a little lacking on this ship. We enjoyed most of the entertainment in the Stardust theatre and thought the variety and quality was very good. However, there is definitely more to do on the larger ships. Unfortunately, our sailing was scheduled for later departure from Venice and, therefore, Kotor was cancelled on our sailing. On top of that, the weather in Argostoli was dreadful, so for safety reasons, that port was cancelled as well. The Captain did sail out of the bad weather and we had a sunny and pleasant day at sea instead. Still it was a little disappointing to lose 2 or the 6 ports, but what can you do. We had booked a 4 port excursion package with NCL. The Kotor portion was refunded. Corfu (Timeless Villages & Scenic Drive) We had a lovely excursion which took us to a few different areas of the island, including a nice lunch by the water. We did spend quite a lot of the day on the bus, but we enjoyed this tour overall on this very pretty island. Santorini (Greek Style Celebration – Opa!) The tender took us to a bus which travelled up to Oia where we had some free time to explore. We then stopped at Pyros where you could climb up the 128 steps to a church and observation area. We chose to stay back and enjoy and adult beverage. Next was the dinner buffet with Greek Dancing and plate breaking celebration. This was enjoyable, but the food was just ok and it felt rushed. We then took the bus back to Fira where we were given a ticket to the cable car which we were told was a 5 min walk. The sun was just setting, but we just took a quick couple of pics and decided to head out. The walk was at least 20 mins and before we got there, we realized the line was outrageously long. It was quite chaotic, people pushing in, fighting, etc. You had no idea where the entrance actually was. After 1-1/2 we finally made it down to the tender. This tour was rated a 2 on the activity scale and I think that is misleading. There is a lot of walking, steep hills & steps, and we as seniors found it very tiring. We book with NCL so we have no tender issues and no problem returning to the ship so we found this tour to be lacking in this department. We may have just done Santorini on our own had we known. Mykonos We had to tender at this port as well, but we had no problem coming or going to the ship. We did this port on our own and took a cab up to the windmills. We explored the town and had and lovely coffee and cheese pie and a café right by the water. What a beautiful port. It was relaxing and enjoyable. Dubrovnik (Croatian Riviera & Dubrovnik) Read Less

Viking cruises are for adults who want to learn something about the places they visit and don't want to be "nickel and dimed" for every little extra. Embarkation and disembarkation were quick and smooth. With only about 900 passengers, you're never fighting crowds. The service was exceptional on this ship, with very happy crew members. The ports were a good variety of Mediterranean stops. Because there is an included tour at every port, there was always an excellent guide describing the attributes of an area, telling you the best places to shop, and highlighting additional things you can do after the tour was completed. We chose a couple optional tours, such as the Opera at night in Venice, but for the most part, the included tours were enough. The ship is well appointed, with several lounges. The musical entertainment was exceptional. The band and singers were skilled and worked well together. The variety provided was good, with even a talented cruise director performing one night. By the way, the cruise director was the best we've ever had and we've done dozens of cruises. This is not a ship with lots of entertainment venues for youngsters nor a casino. What we enjoyed instead were very interesting lectures by guest speakers who gave us the history of the places we were visiting and many other TED type talks. I loved listening to these. Our veranda stateroom was roomy enough, but could have used more drawer space. Our cabin steward brought us as many extra hangers as we needed. A nice amenity is the free laundry facilities which are quite useful on a 14 day cruise. The fitness center and spa were fabulous. I used the fitness center every morning. It had lots of equipment, was very spacious, with windows looking out to sea. The dressing rooms were large and included were a sauna, cold dip, large vitality pool, hot tub, snow grotto, and steam room. On the last few days at sea, the snow grotto was closed for maintenance. The food was very good and they were very careful to plan for my allergies. We would definitely book a Viking ocean cruise again. Read Less

NCL has done it again! Amazing food, and staff! Can’t wait to book again. We had to fly to Rome for this trip so we stayed in Rome afterward. But cruising is so much easier and we stopped in 9 ports in 10 days. The Jade is a medium size ship with enough elevators so that they were never crowded. This ship also has the spinnaker lounge, my favorite place to sit, read, and watch the view. This special lounge located at the top of the ship has been eliminated on the larger ships to make way for more rooms. But without it, there is nowhere else to get these panoramic views but in the buffet place. Casino was fun with great bar service. Won several big wins. Restaurants were all amazing and really cared about you! Unbelievable service and food. Our balcony room was ok and comfy. Amazing bartenders! Fun and quick. Ports of call were in Greece or Italy. Wonderful stops! Taormina in Sicily was our favorite but Mikonos and Santorini were great too. Downsides: ncl excursions are pricey. Did only 3 in 10 days. Some singers/bands put us to sleep with the slow ballads, etc. and rock or lively music started late at night. Especially when we had to meet for an excursion at 7:15 am. No time for shows either. Deal or no deal is a waste. But they make a huge amount of money on it. Overall, a fabulous trip! We will go again for sure. Read Less

We chose this as an anniversary cruise and to see the Greek Isles for the first time. We were 100% satisfied in every way. The passengers were 95% retirees so the on-ship vibe was relaxed, moderately paced, courteous, and totally pleasant. The entertainment events on board were extraordinarily excellent and varied-/the best we have experienced in seven cruises on a variety of cruise lines. We were amazed several times by how good they were. The production values and talent were memorable. Our balcony stateroom was excellent, clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The food in the main dining and buffet areas was nicely presented, tasty, and varied. We did not do any specialty dining. We especially enjoyed the leisurely breakfasts on the rear open-air deck. The embarkation and debarkation processes in all ports were timely and efficient. Everything was well organized and on time. The ports of call were excellent and varied. The September-October weather and temperature were perfect and the on-shore tourist volume was reasonable (except in Oia and Fira Santorini in the early evening). Read Less

We always wanted to cruise the Med so this was our retirement treat. Prior to the cruise we had a great CC rollcall and so we met the night before sailing and forged some good friendships for on board. Embarkation at Barcelona was a breeze. Our room was ready even though it was early. Ate lunch at the dining room - very relaxed start to our cruise. The crew were all amazing - room steward , bar staff and deck attendants. Our cabin was comfortable and clean - great position on Aliso Deck in an inside cabin. Highly recommended. The shows and entertainment were very good - though a couple of nights there was not a lot on. The meals in dining room (we had anytime dining) were always good and we never had to wait for a table- we ate around 6:15. We had two water shuttle stops and they were handled very well and we were off quickly. We took no tours with the ship- we preorganised local operators and shared tours on our roll call. The room service and cabin crew members deliver the service right away. The formal dinner chef arranged food to our liking. I strongly recommend to everyone and specifically are those who wants to have life time memories of their special events like renewal of vows, weddings, etc. The Emeralds Princess Cruise treats you very special that you remember rest of your life. One must go on this Cruise once in their life time at least. People are very friendly. I met wonderful people who were totally not known before but talking to them they were kind to attend my 45th wedding anniversary renewal of vows. Great cultural enrichment and wine! We overpacked. Having the onboard washers and dryers were great to recycle and bring less. We recommend being self aware as a traveler. We were disappointed by the rudeness of some of the other travelers. When something did not go perfect the ship crew always worked hard and quickly to correct it. Be patient. Read Less

We have received brochures from Viking for many years, for river cruises, most of which went to places we had already visited by land. When this cruise down the Adriatic came through, we chose it to celebrate our Golden Wedding, as a special treat. It could not have been more wonderful. The whole ship was beautifully laid out, with attractive, subtle decoration (not all gold and glitz), it was extremely efficiently run with every procedure going smoothly, and the staff were all fantastic - friendly, helpful and cheerful, even when they had been working all day, and some during the night too while we sailed. All the visits in port were beautifully organised and the guides were good. The crowds in some towns were unfortunate but on board, we did not feel at all crowded, despite there being 1400 people on board. This holiday was way beyond our expectations and we are recommending Viking to all our friends. Another trip may well be in the diary at some stage. Read Less

The Viking Star and crew did not disappoint. It is often said you get what you pay for and Viking stood tall. The crew hospitality was heart warming to say the least, always personalized and always delivered in a jubilant way that is refreshingly uplifting to the spirt after a long day ashore or leaving your cabin for an anticipated dinner experience. The physical appearance of The Star is impressive in it’s absolutely clean environment throughout the ship. This was our second Viking Cruise on The Star, the last being 15 nights out of Barcelona to Bergen in 2018. It was uplifting to see again so many crew members who’s interactions with each other, regardless of status, continue to be seamlessly positive. Five stars to the entertainment on-board. It would be unjust to single anyone out, least I forget to mention someone, from singers to band members all were exceptionally talented. My only (false) negative is that my failure at self discipline led to a few pounds joining us is a testament to the exceptional variety and quality of food and beverage. We look forward to next summer where a Viking River Cruise awaits our discovery and new adventures. Tom & Regina Read Less
