We liked: the itinerary - 10 days at sea, embark from Seattle, verandah stateroom, good food, good service, good selection of at-sea activities, excellent cleanliness, good selection of in-room movies, large state room TV, had a bath tub, free room service, excellent performances at the "Lincoln Center Stage" (The very best part of the whole cruise!), free seating option in main dinning room Didn't like: excursions - extremely over priced & poor selection (only offered excursions from a company owned by HAL), hard mattress, AC directed at head of the bed, very poor main stage performances, outrageous price to get online, HAL charges for up-grades ("Buy Ups"), very high required daily gratuity fee, no booking incentives like offered with other cruise lines, poor shops on board with overly high prices Would cruise with HAL only if we can get an extremely good price. Otherwise, there are other cruise lines that are a far better value for the price (see above). Read Less

Hawaii was nice but the Eurodam itself was the true destination. The ship is beautiful. The food is great. The specialty restaurants are outstanding. The variety and quality of musical venues on Music Walk is wonderful with something for everyone. The dual piano players with Billboard Onboard was my personal favorite. The crew was exceptional from John Scott the captain who entertained us every day with the origin of nautical based expressions such as between the devil and the deep blue sea, Nick the delightful Cruise Director, and all the way down the chain of command. The entire crew was relaxed and happy and eager to help. I booked the last Alaska cruise of the season and stayed on the Eurodam through Hawaii for a total of 24 days. Anyone who doesn't like to leave home for a 7 day cruise should consider combining these two destinations as a "collector's voyage" some year. Read Less

I read a review saying "First and last" and I could not agree more. Wish I had listened. From the food that was on par with school cafeteria to the bed and pillows that make rocks seem cozy, to the staff who could care less that there were no paper towels or soap in the public washrooms. The ONLY good thing was a Client Service desk woman named Amie. She was actually concerned about the lack of soap and towels and too immediate action. She also followed up - she was a rare and unique staff member. While eating in O'sheehans (shall I recite the menu?it never changed) we noticed a staff member taking the meat off a meal, putting it in a zip lock baggies and putting it under the counter. When we brought this to the hostess's attention her comment was "maybe he was hungry" I was really baffled so we informed some at the Customer service desk - she said "maybe he wanted to try it" - unbelievable!! We talked to another staff member who said, "what you get is better than what we get" So, if we were eating sub-par food, what the heck is the staff getting that they need to steal food? Since no one seemed shocked or surprised- it must be common. The daily paper with events of the day consistently had lots of errors - more "I'm sorry " but what I found upsetting most about this daily occurrence was the staff in the area that had the wrong event info - they had to take the anger and frustration of guest after guest as they tried to explain the area. No wonder the staff seemed so frustrated and uncaring. I can honestly say I would not recommend this ship - and if this is an example of the line then I would say - please book with another line - we wish we had. I have never been happy to leave a cruise in the past, but I cannot properly express the joy I felt to leave this one. I wish it could have been different NCL Read Less

My husband and I flew into Seattle two nights before departing Seattle on the NCL Jewel for a 10-night Alaskan cruise to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday. We packed 3 medium size suitcases and one large suitcase anticipating really cold temps in Alaska with layering clothes and warm winter boots. We did the 10-hour tour by Northwest which included a tour to the Boeing Airplane Factory. We really enjoyed this tour of the Seattle downtown and surrounding areas including the Salmon fish ladder at Ballard Locks and Dam. NCL embarkation went very smoothly. We arrived at the pier about 1030, dropped off our luggage, and stood in line to get our cabin card assigned, then sat waiting for our boarding group to be called. We were boarded and having lunch by 1:00pm at the Garden Cafe. NCL Jewel left port in Seattle around 4pmish on Saturday 23 Sep 2017. Our cabin was 10528, a balcony cabin, close to elevators. The room and balcony were kept clean during our 10-night cruise. Our cabin steward was a young lady (Wuan One sp?) who sang happy birthday to me and made me a cake out of a towel, flowers and sparkly confetti. Very sweet of her!! Cabin furnishings were showing wear and tear; recommend to NCL to refurbish within the year. Electronics for cabin need to be updated as well. The food was great at each of the complimentary restaurants except for the Chin Chin. We ate there the last evening and ordered Kung Pao chicken, steamed rice and spring rolls. The chicken was very tough, the sauce tasted old. Rice and spring rolls were good. I experienced extreme gas for several hours afterwards and frequent trips to bathroom. Maybe their other dishes are better. Entertainment and activities were outstanding. Something for everyone throughout the day even when in port. Alaska was beautiful (Skagway, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Prince Rupert, Icy Strait Point). We discovered that we over packed (way too many clothes and cold weather boots which were never worn). Our trip lasted 17 days flying from Cincinnati to Denver (one night), Denver to Seattle (2 nights in Seattle), NCL Jewel 10-night Alaskan cruise, 1 night in Vancouver, AMTRAK train ride from Vancouver to Seattle on the Cascades Train in business class (very nice), 2 night AMTRAK train ride on the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago, one night in Chicago, and flight from Chicago O'Hare to Cincinnati Airport. The two-night train ride on AMTRAK was not very restful, with us waking each time the train hot a bump, rocked or rolled. We slept for 13 hours straight in Chicago on a luxurious bed with a great view of the city at Magnificent Mile location. Flight from Chicago to Cincinnati on United was very relaxing. Made it home Saturday night by 9pm and slept for another 13 hours. Good thing my husband and I are retired (we are both in our young 60s), but we definitely needed a rest from our 17 day journey (trip of a lifetime and now marked off our bucket list). A word to the wise for advice on packing: We only needed clothes really for seven days as most outfits could be interchanged and worn again. We did not need heavy winter coats. We did not need cold weather boots. We could have taken three medium sized suitcases and two personal carry on bags and have been just fine. The more suitcases you have, the more difficult to navigate without assistance and additional expenses. There is plenty of room under the bed to store the suitcases. NCL Jewel freestyle cruising fit our needs where we could dine when we wanted to within restaurant hours. The perks associated with our cruise included the ultimate beverage package, $100 onboard credit and $50 per cabin deduction for port excursion. Drinks being served while still in Washington area while free under our package still incurred state tax which quickly eroded the onboard credit. Drinks could be pretty potent, so advise being aware and conscious of number of drinks consumed. They hit you hard when you get up and start moving around a rocking ship. Too easy to stumble from the rocking and fall and get hurt before ever starting the vacation. Also Medicare insured folks should be aware that Medicare does not pay outside the USA. One of our friends had to visit the ships doctor for a bad cold that turned for the worse and had to get a prescription for medicine (antibiotics, etc). His bill was $500. I have since discovered that Medicare insured folks can purchase additional supplemental or gap insurance that does cover outside the USA. We immensely enjoyed the WhitePass and Youkon Route train ride in Skagway and the Otter Express excursion in Sitka. We saw over 50 humpback whales, sea otters and seals and bald eagles in Sitka. Overall: This was a great experience. My husband and I had never been to Alaska and we loved the parts we saw. Luscious pine tree forests, beautiful pristine waters, and Oh My Goodness: The glaciers were magnificent! We witnessed and heard the loud cracking noise of calvings before they occurred. The staff on the NCL Jewel were extremely professional, courteous and helpful and actually looked and acted they were glad to be there serving the NCL Jewel and its customers. We loved it. We highly recommend taking this cruise. Read Less

From start to finish everything was great! We couldn't have asked for anything better! Everybody on board and off were great! What a great time. Our staff on the Haven deck were the best you could ask for! Anything we asked for we got. Amazing. This was my first cruise and would do the cruise again without hesitation. The scenery the Excursions the people that lead the excursion were all great. We left on time and returned to the ship on time. I think we got a little extra being the last cruise ship in the Alaskan port until next season. Extra sled dog time, extra Glacier flying time, extra everything. We learned a lot about the people working on board the ship. They come from all over the world and were very knowledgeable with not only our cruise but others they have worked on as well. Hats off to the entire Staff and Crew of the Norwegian Jewel! Read Less

I thought the cruise was almost perfect. Was disappointed that the Good Feet arch supports were not actually discounted $100. Checked on-line and the price was the same after the "discount". Attended 2 art auctions. Bid on an item and thought it was reserved until I paid for it. 2nd auction, I requested prices on 2 items and an appointment was made later that day and I was under the impression that the meeting was to discuss the price. 20 minutes late, I was informed that there was no longer the auction price but full. Really. I did not even get the initial item I bid on. Never been to an art auction before and these problems were unexpected. Extremely disappointed. First cruise I have ever been on that a fee is charged for the steam room. Another disappointment. Ate dinner in the buffet once and was the last time. Good variety but very bland. Room steward was great! Did truly enjoy every port!!!!!!!!!!! Read Less

Nineteen years ago, we honeymooned on the 'old' Westerdam, so we chose this ship, the 'new' Westerdam, for our anniversary celebration. Embark was pretty quick and easy, and along with the HAL transfer (from airport to cruise terminal) we were given an unexpected 'tour' by our driver, which was a nice surprise. We had a window cabin towards the back, which was cozy, with plenty of storage. The cabin, like the entire ship, was in great shape, considering it's age. The ole style windows have about two feet of ledge; I put pillows there and sat in the window to read and enjoy the view, day or night. The service was up to the usual standard of HAL ships, which i always good, even in an inexpensive cabin on the Main deck. The service in the main dining room was better than usual, with the total dining time only about one hour. The Lido was never crowded at the non-peak times. The food was much better than some of HAL's other ships, and I'm a picky eater. The steaks in the MDR were possibly prime tenderloin, and the lobster a good sized tail. There was a nice selection of desserts. I didn't attend many of the shows in the big theatre, but what I saw could have been better I didn't attend any of the nightclubs or evening activities because I prefer the casino in the evenings, and I retire early. LITTLE KNOWN FACT: If you spend a lot of money in the casino, you will receive fantastic upgrades on future cruises. There are plenty of things to pass the time:classes, lectures, crafts, games and other things to do during the day. There is a collection of over 1200 DVDs available on loan, all complimentary. There are plenty of books to borrow from the library, and trivia and other group games ongoing. I would like to be able to buy a paperback on board, but I seldom see books for sale on ships. I informed the ship that we were celebrating our anniversary and they provided us with a most lovely surprise. We returned to our cabin after dinner and there were two large towel swans, surrounded with rose petals on the bed, plus a huge arrangement of tropical flowers and a decadent chocolate/whipped cream cake with a Happy Anniversary on it. That was awesome of them to do that!! So if you're celebrating a special occasion, be sure to let them know!! The islands were all as expected. We LOVED Waikiki the most, and the one island where we couldn't walk to anything, well, we stayed on the ship, which we also enjoy doing. We toured Vancouver, which is a fantastic city, and well worth the price of the HAL tour. LITTLE KNOW FACT: The Exploration Café serves those little sandwiches and pastries, etc., complimentary. They would like you to buy coffee, but it's not necessary. Looking for free wine? The Mariner's luncheon offers sparkling wine complimentary, and the art auctions offer it too. Read Less
