This was our first River Cruise. We enjoyed the size of the ship and that there were only 168 guests, which made getting to know people very easy. The cruise director, Andreea, was exceptional - she managed all aspects of our itinerary seamlessly. The food was very good, with a varied selection of appetizers, soups, mains, and desserts. The wait staff were friendly and professional. Our cabin was very well designed so we had plenty of space to put everything. Our cabin was also spotless. I would say that I found the itinerary a bit rushed - that being said however, I also chose to not stay on the boat, which I could have. Perhaps the same itinerary could be completed in ten days, allowing a bit more time in some cities. Unfortunately on our second last day we ended being off the ship for almost 11 hours. Our tour of Regensburg was to last 4 hours. There was a problem with water levels being too low and the boat being unable to make it to our next destination. That is understandable - cannot control Mother Nature! I'm not totally convinced that there was not a way to get us on the boat earlier. So, the memory of my last excursion was a long, wet, cold day in a small city with nothing to do. When we boarded the boat everything was rushed. The next morning we had to wake up very early to be bussed to our last port of call. Unfortunately these events coloured my overall experience. Read Less

A friend we were traveling with found Scenic and we just took his recommendation. The ship was excellent and the crew were superb. The only disappointment was our butler, who did very little and for the the odd time that we asked for something he still didn't come through. Otherwise, the entire experience was excellent. The shore excursions were very well organized and we were very pleased that all the gratuities were included. The motor-assisted bicycles were also a great amenity. We used two of them on one occasion and thoroughly enjoyed them. They were also very easy to learn to use. The meals were outstanding and the chef took great pride in his craft. The selection of wines was mediocre but sufficient. The bar selection was likewise very good and the bar staff carried the torch for service excellence. Overall, we had good value for our money and will likely cruise with Scenic again. Read Less

We explored Lisbon before we embarked our ship in Porto. I found Porto difficult to walk around with lots of potholes in the sidewalks and lots of empty buildings. In the future, I would skip Lisbon and head into Porto a little earlier. That being said, the hotel was lovely and our waitress in the hotel lobby knew her wines, and was generous in her information about Portuguese wines. Embarkation went smoothly. Our cabin was on Sapphire deck and was quite comfortable to our needs. Very comfortable bed. Housekeeping always kept the room immaculate and refreshed our little bar daily and gave us extra water. Loved the balcony which I could open and close at leisure. We ate mostly in the Crystal dining room, but often ate a lighter lunch in the sun lounge. We ate once in the Portobellos, the specialty restaurant. Food was delicious on all counts. Our entertainment and activities were light but highly interesting. Tours also were interesting, and there were always washrooms available. I am going to try to make the candied almonds that one person demonstrated on one tour. We especially liked the Fado music both on and off board, the cork demonstration, shopping with Chef and his demonstration, and tours to the wineries and villages. Service was always with a smile and we loved the staff, their hard work and humor. After disembarking at Porto, we flew on to Madrid. The only negative thing I have to say is about Portuguese airlines. Small and not on time. We loved Madrid. Our tour guide was knowledgable, warm and welcoming. She was always more than available and helpful. The streets are pedestrian friendly. We would definitely go there again. And our city tour guide who was also our guide at the Prado Art Gallery was exceptionally knowledgable. In conclusion, we loved Scenic. I love the all inclusive, I loved the wonderful variety of shipmates. I loved that the ship was Portuguese built, and the crew was Portuguese. But never fear - their English is impeccable. We would travel with Scenic again. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the rave reviews of Scenic, because it is all inclusive and because of the itinerary, Gems of the Danube. We were picked up at the airport in a lovely Mercedes and our driver delivered us to the ship quickly. Embarkation was simple and seamless in Budapest, though we waited several hours in the lounge for our cabins to be prepared. Drinks and snacks were offered in the meantime. The crew was welcoming and friendly. Our cabin was great and we met our butler immediately though I have to say that was one of the very few times we saw him. This was disappointing as we were expecting a little pampering. The food is ample and good though rarely outstanding. The wines are not as high quality as we expected though we discovered quickly that better wines were available upon request. The tours were well planned and made for little idle time. You will walk quite a bit on this cruise so be prepared. The signature Tailormade system is very effective, easy to hear the guides (I used my own earbuds though) but it is a bit heavy and bulky to carry around one's neck. We participated in almost every tour day, save one, and did the Prague extension as well. The onboard entertainment is okay--the pianist who is the onboard musician is very skilled and enjoyable and some of the local performers were good. We loved the Vienna special performance--truly professional musicians, dancers, vocalists. Suggestions: if you arrive mid-day on embarkation, have the ship's crew arrange a tour for you to the Hospital in the Rock or shopping district so that your frustration at waiting will be alleviated. There is much to see in Budapest but we had limited time before sailing the next day. It would have been nice to have more time in each port. All in all, it was an enjoyable cruise. Read Less

Recommendation of friends who were on their third SCenic cruise. This was my second SCenic river cruise so, obviously compared it with the Danube cruise I went on last year. It was a good experience (not quite as good as the DAnube cruise I did last year)? The entertainment was good but only for two nights, the rock group was excellent, a great night. the Pope's palace concert good as was the evening drinks visit to castle of Tournon. Although Pianist Richard did his best he was not quite 'in tune' with his audience. The shore excursions were very good except for the village of Oignt where we were promised crafts shops and coffee shops, none of which were open! We wondered why we were only give 45 minutes there, just enough to visit the disgusting toilets!!! Dining was very good but breakfast buffet could have been a bit more efficient, often scrambled egg, potatoes etc. All gone and not replenished very quickly. Wine with meals excellent and special requests fulfilled. Bar service during the day also very good, although not so go up on top deck in the afternoons, seemed to be only one attendant on duty and not to be seen regularly. Captains, senior staff etc.very 'visible' and approachable. All in all, despite minor criticisms I would recommend this cruise to my friends, I had a good time and appreciate everyone's efforts to make my time on board enjoyable. Read Less

Chose this cruise as we had never done a river cruise. First two to three days food was certainly not 5 star, we thought the chef had been replaced as the food certainly improved. I must mention Branislav the waiter who went the extra mile and Francis the butler was very keen to please. Waiter was asked by a guest for a dessert wine, which he brought, when asked by another guest if he could have one also, he told him no as it was a special wine for other guests, not the answer we would expect on a 5 star ship. As we had not been on a river cruise before, we were surprised by the fact we did not see daylight in our cabin for four days out of the seven days as other boats were moored right next to us, we paid for a balcony and could not use it, as the guests off the other boats could see in the window. I would have thought in this day and age we would have been able to see out and they would not have been able to see in, but no. We have been on Ocean cruises and now a river cruise, I would like to do another river cruise, so I could make a better comparison, but it was very expensive to keep your curtains closed all day. This was our first river cruise. I must say I am please we choose Scenic. I gave it only 4 stars because of the lack of communication between Scenic prior to sailing. Other than that the ship is beautiful and well laid out. What they can do with a small space was wonderful. The food was way better than I ever expected including the buffet which I hate buffets. Everyone herding at one time to get there plate full. This seemed to work quiet well and great choices. The cruise director was a very hard working. Wanted everyone happy even if they choose to do nothing or go on every side trip and watch every performance. Our butter was the best. Now I must say my husband was a bit disappointed as far as all inclusive. He likes Royal Crown whiskey in the evening so upon getting to our room as stock was told we could not have it in our room but could go to the bar area. Now my husband has mobility problems and guess who was going to the bar to return with his glass of Royal Crown. Now the other minor problem was on booking we could not upgrade our room on the land package even if we were willing to pay more??? Perhaps they all have little things that could make them first class. The Danube is beautiful and a great choice. Read Less

This was the year of the great French roast, Paris at 35ºC and similar to that all the cruise long. The payback was clear blue skies, no rain and great photos. The ship was 100% full, hence the service levels in the public areas were stretched. This cruise is a mixture of great French wines and cheeses (approx 450 different cheeses to be tasted), as far as scenery goes the highlights are the cities. The visit to an old hospital and nearby wine tasting at Marche aux Vin was very interesting, as was our first tasting of French nougat which is based on egg white and honey, as was the truffle farm (with charming hosts & dog). The Sundowners excursion (a walk to a nearby fortress tower) for wine/beer/nibbles with live musicians in a cool afternoon breeze was very hard to take. The itinerary was exactly as published. Compliments have to be given to all the bus drivers - they were very professional, safe drivers who helped some of our fellow passengers with their walkers. Driving through the French countryside was most enjoyable. Read Less

it was recommended by our travel agent. It was certainly an excellent experience. staff was excellent and very friendly. Embarkation details was not very details. We were told to have coach transfer to the spaceship at 3.30 pm at the Double Tree by Hilton. However, the exact location was not mentioned in the document sent to us. We accidentally got off the lift at the wrong floor on the way out of the hotel after breakfast. The departure was actually 3.00 pm. The cabin was small but satisfactory for a cruise ship. However, for the extra money we pay for the Junior suite, there is not a lot more space in the room. The balcony was just wide enough for a chair. However, It was exceptional experience from then on. Evening Entertainment, daily free choice were very high standard and certainly above expectation.Staff was very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much of trouble except that they prefer you to make cups of tea except at meal time. Two possible consideration for the company to consider;- 1) If wine and alcohol are not part of the all-inclusive price, it will cater for the non-drinker and keep the cost of the cruise down. 2) Having the same breakfast for 14 days is a bit much. Food sometimes can be a bit salty and other times, a bot bland. Overall, very enjoyable experience. Read Less

The trip was a wonderful experience. Scenic Jade was well cared for, clean and welcoming The sights and experiences were second to none. For us the best parts were the sail though the German Forest, Wachau Valley and the Romantic Rhine. The crew were professional, friendly and attentive with every activity including embarkation and disembarkation were very well managed and executed. The cabin was excellent and the food was well presented. One sour note which everyone should note. The back two rows of cabins on the middle deck were badly affected by engine noise especially during the night. Especially when navigating the 64 locks on the trip. Passengers in two of the four cabins were actually moved to other cabins because of the noise. Scenic should not sell these two rows at the same price as the others further from the engine or should at least tell everyone about the noise. Andrew Burke Read Less

I am reviewing this sailing even though we were on the ship 3 nights. The Amber is a beautiful new ship and her cabins are spacious and plenty of storage including under the bed. Speaking of beds, the bed in our cabin was FANTASTIC. Such a luxurious feel to it and it had motor control for each side. The bathroom, especially the shower, was very nice, roomy and had several shower heads. Absolutely lovely!!. The staff were wonderful, courteous, friendly and helpful. The food was ok and prepared well. I loved the fact that I could have tea or an espresso throughout the day. The reason we were only on the ship a total of 3 nights is the river was high; specifically the Danube and Main rivers. We spent the first night on the ship and we were able to board the ship the last two days of our trip. I am giving the food just a ok is that the cruise line was running out of food and they did the best they could with what they had. I'm not complaining it was good but not to the standards of a luxury river cruise. I would sail Scenic again because of the limited experience we had on the ship we know we would love it if it were a longer sailing. Read Less

We chose this cruise because the scenery is beautiful and because we love Portuguese food. The Duoro River in northern Portugal is spectacular: steep banks that have terraced vineyards right to the top, also olive and almond trees. The Scenic Azure is a lovely brand new ship, contemporary design with spacious cabins, very comfortable. All the staff are Portuguese, many from Porto where we set sail. The service is very professional but friendly and relaxed. 96 guests and 39 crew. Guests were mainly from Australia and UK with about a dozen Canadians and half as many Americans, mostly couples and mostly active seniors from ages early 60’s on up. There were interesting excursions, many of which required some level of fitness due to the steep hills and cobblestones .... Guests who were not as able could be accommodated by bus tours. Buses were new and very comfortable. The tour guides use communication systems which guests wear so that when they dial in they can hear the commentary without the guides’ having to yell. We sailed during the day so were able to appreciate the scenery --- we docked at interesting places and there are stretches of the river that are not heavily populated. The Duoro is becoming popular but so far not over-run --- we were only rafted a few times and the other ships tended to leave early in the morning in many cases, allowing us to have our coffee on the balcony. There were no noticeable exhaust fumes from the engines. The crew were friendly and professional, and not obtrusive. They all spoke fluent or almost fluent English. We were disappointed with the food. Meals were beautifully presented and professionally served with plenty of choices, but rather bland for the most part, lacking acid balance and seasoning. We were hoping for some more strongly flavored Portuguese specialties. This certainly did not spoil our experience and we recognize that chefs must accommodate many tastes – but other guests stated the same concern, one offering the opinion that the food lacked "zest". This is an all-inclusive cruise, with no added charges and no tipping. We recommend this luxury cruise. Read Less

Jewels of Europe We chose this cruise to see as much of Europe as we could as well as do a cruise. It met all our expectations and more, our only complaint was we were sometimes to exhausted to enjoy all that was on offer. Everything went like clock work in every aspect of the tour. The crew and staff were very friendly and helpful,And made the the cruise even better. History was the main focus of our trip, but as we are farmers a bit more of what the local areas grow would have been very interesting. The entertainment was second to none,a taste of all the different cultures. Also the fellow passengers were in our age group and very likeminded in their outlook. May was a great time to travel, not too hot,not too many queues and the rivers were still passable as the snow and rains had not effected them at that time. The buses that took us on the land part of our trip were very comfortable, drivers very helpful and good at there jobs.Sometimes the places they had to take the buses were unbelievable. Embarkation went very smooth as we were on board quickly after a 4 hour bus ride from Prague where we started our vacation. We received our room keys and were allow in the cabin immediately. Overall the cruise was great. The thing we enjoyed thoroughly were the excursions from the ship which were all included in the price of the cruise. We researched the excursions by reading reviews to pick the ones that fit our interests and offered the best value. We booked the lower cabin on the ship (below the water level) which turned out to be a mistake as the cabin was small (160 sq ft)) and the noise level from above (toilets flushing) and outside (propeller noise from passing ships) was overwhelming at times. Breakfast and lunch were OK because we had the same thing every day. Dinner was better as the menu changed every day. Dinner selection included beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian every night. I will say the portions at dinner were a little light on the main entrée which was disappointing. Cabin and bar service was great. Entertainment was pretty good as Scenic brought in local talent. We enjoyed the river cruise down the Danube with Scenic Tours. It is a good way to see the highlights of Prague, Nuremberg, Vienna and Budapest. Read Less

It was a freezing sunny day when we boarded the Scenic Jewel, we were made to feel very welcome and our butler explained all amenities to us in great detail. We were on the top deck (diamond) and had choosen a junior suite. The cabin as with all river cruise lines was small with very little hanging space and one has to be a great packer to put everything away. However it was The bathroom that made us choose this suite as its larger and has a bath. The bathroom has plenty of room with a separate shower lots of space. Plus I had a hot bath at the end of almost evry day. There are lots of lovely bath salts and gels it was lovely. The Scenic Jewel is like a floating 5 star hotel, the decor, modern, simple and stylish. Everything is very clean and attention to detail sublime. The food is wonderful with plenty of choices, so much food. All drinks are served pretty much all day and are included in the tariff. If you wanted you could eat and drink all day long. There is a huge upper deck with ample deck & longe chairs. It was very cold during our trip but sunny not many clients braved the upper deck but we did and the views with all the castles were divine. All staff were first class and a credit to Scenic, in particular Raddo our barman who was very attentive to the point of when I got ill he made me a hot brandy lemon drink without prompting for my husband to bring to me in our cabin. Everyone on our cruise pretty much got sick, this was of NO fault of Scenic who went to great lenghts to explain to the guests why they needed to use hand sanatation but so many ignored this advise and those few morons infected us all. The day trips were plentiful with many great choices our only upset was we couldnt dock in Vienna (something about a bridge being fixed) this meant we had to moor 90 minutes away from Vienna and commute backwards and forwards. In a 18 hour space we spent a total of 7 hours on a bus meaning less time in Vienna. I was very disappointed with this as Vienna was the main reason we did this trip, however this was not Scenics fault so I cant blame them. The onboard entertainment is so bad its good. The entertainment brought on board at various cities excellent. The hairdresser and masseur were not as good as I usually have but they were certainly okay. If you want to get a wonderful overview of Europe in a 5 star floating hotel, with awesome staff, excellent food and unpack only once then I would suggest you take a river cruise, this one was our third (first with Scenic) and matched our expectations. The Opal is a new ship and very nice. The only fault we had was at the buffet, breakfast and lunch, the food was not hot or warm. We joined the Jasper from spending 3 nights pre-cruise in Prague, which was a beautiful city and the Marriott was quite nice and perfectly located in old town area. Didn't depart our hotel on a 4 hour bus ride to our ship docked in Passau/Vilshofen, and would have been nicer for either an earlier departure or shorter ride. All aspects of this cruise were very good, with service, public areas, and cabins being considered to be top-notch. A beautiful and new ship, with a crew who are really doing their best to make it a 5-star experience. The food was quite good, with plentiful quantities and well-prepared. The breakfast and lunch buffets were outstanding every day--some of the best we have had. The dinners started out a bit below par for the Scenic objective of being a premier cruise line, but got consistently better each evening. They could improve by having a more varied menu and a few more local selections from the areas we visited. Our cabin steward and butler were totally awesome and consistently went over-and-above in providing exceptional service. Our captain did an outstanding job navigating the low water levels in the Danube, but really didn't see much of him or the hotel manager other than leaving/returning to ship each day after our shore excursions. Would have been nice to see them a bit more as they were quite friendly. Our cruise director did a good job in spite of a few curves thrown at him by some of the ships local tour guides- which he seemed to handle very well. He was quite personable and took care of all of our minor issues, but he appeared a bit overworked and could have used some help from some of the many talented and energetic ship's staff, possibly Scenic needs to create a "trainee CD" program like we saw on our prior cruises with Uniworld, to help assist in herding the flock while ashore. The shore excursions were considered "very good" to "excellent" and will only get better as this new ship and staff get more familiar with the local stops and local guides. Overall, this was a very enjoyable cruise and we would love to try Scenic again in the future. Next time we'll cruise in spring or fall as it was blazing hot each day which had a little bit of an impact on our overall enjoyment of shore excursions and on-deck time. Read Less

I have never done a river cruise before and have only ever done an ocean cruise back in 1969. I usually do escorted coach tours when I travel to Europe and my husband hasn't travelled overseas since we married back in 1971. We arrived in Zurich a day ahead of the cruise departure and that was a good thing, as my husbands luggage didn't arrive when we did. No one was waiting for us by the time we eventually got to the arrivals hall but after contacting the local Scenic number, our private transfer driver came back to the airport and delivered us to the Zurich hotel. Thankfully the luggage arrived the following morning, so all was okay when we were picked up and taken to the ship, which departed from Basel. Arrival and embarkation was slick. Our cabin was fabulous but that was my husbands choice, not mine. I would have been happy with a Balcony suite or even just a state room, as there were plenty of community areas for seeing both sides of the river and I'm a more social person than my husband is. Our cabin included all laundry plus a €197 credit to be spent in the wellness area and I managed to spend most of the credit. Shampoo and blow-dry x 3 @ €34.00 and a massage €79.00. The royal cabins received 3 snacks/bites each afternoon/evening. I think Scenic should cut that back to 2. It was nice receiving a snack/bite mid afternoon but I found the pre dinner one just a tad too much. The after dinner bite was nice though. Our cabin attendant was lovely, although I wished that she would adhere to the sign in the bathroom saying that if you didn't want your towels changed, hang them a certain way. No matter how I hanged them, we always had clean towels after showering. Our cabin was serviced twice a day. Near the end of our tour, I would refold my towel and hang it as if it was unused and it wasn't changed. Victory for me. Our butler was lovely but in reality we never used his services apart from one evening when we decided to have room service. All drinks are included with Scenic. The only drinks my husband had from our bar fridge was coke and I would have a wine every few days. Unless you have a drinking problem, the included alcohol isn't necessary. IMHO. The staff were friendly/fabulous and their service was excellent and I enjoyed the delicious HOT omelette that Bravo cooked for me every morning for breakfast. After the first couple of days, hubby & I decided that the lunch meals in the restaurant were too heavy (unappetising) and we would then have lunch at the River Cafe. The prawn pizza I had one day there, was yummy. The cold meal choices, not so crash hot but the soups and a few of the other hot meals were good. The meals were a disappointment to me, especially the dinner ones. The vegetables were often overcooked and, unfortunately, the majority of the meals, luke warm. Loved my breakfast omelette though. Their lunch time BBQ needs a bit of a rethink, though the idea was good. The included excursions on offer were great and if you couldn't find something to suit you, you could always stay onboard. The Irish Coffees are potent. I decided to have one when in the lounge one afternoon, when doing the crossword puzzle. Took me about half an hour to sip that and I wasn't game to have another. Local news/papers are available every day. i.e. highlights from your country. Canada, Australia, USA and UK plus a paper with a crossword puzzle on one side and a Sudoka on the other. Overall I loved this tour BUT for me personally, river cruises are not my thing. I don't plan on doing another one in the near future. If money was not a consideration, my rating might be different. I didn't pay for this holiday, my husband did but I have rated some things from my income perspective. Read Less

To begin last year there was a drought on the danube and you could not start where you were suppose to. The cruise never told us until the day it left prague. I wish someone had told me not to go out every day and rush around and stay on the boat one day and crusie down, or you dont get to see any beautiful countryside cause at nite its dark when the boat was moving. The nites they had special dinners the food was great , the other nites it was good. Lunches looked great but you were off the boat everyday site seeing. I would not pay extra for balcony cause you are at dock level and dont see anything or you go up to the top deck at nite and there is where the view is. Entertainment is fair you are not going on a river cruise for the entertainment. The electric bikes were great but everyone was in a hurry , and they needed to divide the groups up more. Scenic is one of the better ships cause everything is included. It is much different than a big cruise ship. Just remember to relax. Read Less

Have just completed our second Scenic river cruise having booked this one after completing our first on the Scenic Jewell 2 years ago. The transfers and embarkation were of the usual Scenic high standards as was the quality of the ship and its crew. The pace of the Amsterdam to Basle cruise was more relaxed than our previous Amsterdam to Budapest trip. This cruise had a high percentage of repeat passengers and this was evident in the passengers choice of excursions with some electing to stay on board and just enjoy cruising on the river. The variety of excursions was excellent as was the quality of the local guides. The one exception was a concert performance in the Palace of Rastatt. No air-conditioning and 33 degrees made for a very uncomfortable evening. Our big disappointment was the food on this trip, our previous Scenic experience was so good it influenced our decision to book this trip. The breakfast buffet was excellent as previously remembered as was the lunch buffet. However, what happened to all the small lunch choices we remember in the River Café (hamburgers, fish and chips etc). Often the choice of dishes had a very Asian influence which was not our taste. The dinner menu in the Crystal Dining Room was a strange mixture of dishes with little local influence and a lack of compatability between courses. Dishes were often overcooked, especially the seafood.(tough lobster and wilted snow peas). On several occasions we resorted to the back-up menu of steak and chips or hamburgers from room service. We were really looking forward to the "highlight" top-deck barbecue after our previous experience but were sadly disappointed when the meat was not barbecued but prepared in the kitchen and served from hot dishes. (Another buffet!) The best meal we had on the cruise was an evening excursion to a restaurant in a Dutch village where where well prepared local dishes were served. As with our previous trip, getting a second or subsequent glass of wine at dinner can be a challenge with most of the passengers dining at the same time which stretches the waiting staff. Overall, the boat, crew and excursions were 5 star but the dining experience 3 star at best. Disappointing when you paid for 5 star across the board. The change from an eastern European kitchen staff to an Asian one may explain the difference in the meals. Read Less

We have recently returned from the Jewels of Russia River Cruise starting in Moscow and finishing in St Petersburg which has been great. We were met at the Airport and taken by Coach to the Ship Tsar where we were welcomed on board. The ship itself is quite comfortable. (Not a space-ship), and, BALCONY CABIN adequate. Meals and service on board were of excellent standard, with drinks served for Lunch and Dinner. The staff were all very warming, friendly and dedicated, which helped create a relaxing atmosphere. Excursions, Concerts, Circus, Ballet, Cathedrals, Museums, Metro Subways etc. were all Highlights, and, very well organised throughout the cruise, with free time given. Once sailing, each village being Uglich, Yaroslavl, Goritsy, Kizhi Is, and Mandrogi all have their own stories which are all interesting. Back on board it was time to relax and reminisce with fellow passengers, and staff. There were many fun activities for all. Vodka Tasting Session, Traditional Russian Doll making, Russian Language and Songs, Martryoshka painting class, and, Ice-Cream Parties to name a few over the 14 days. Each evening there was Live Music and Dancing with Surprise Entertainment the last night before arriving in St Petersburg, which was exceptional. To say what has been most enjoyed, would be difficult as the whole cruise was of high standard. Thanks to all involved for such wonderful memories to treasure. We continued on with Scenic to do the Baltic States Land Tour which has also been enjoyed by John (my husband) and myself. Read Less

Very enjoyable trip of 29 days cruising the Danube, Maine and Rhine. Interesting stops along the way where we were able to get a good idea of the country side. Five luxury coaches were provided for off ship day trips. We were treated to five star dining, often using product grown locally. Staff were very pleasant and were there to help in any way. Entertainment was provided most evening often found from the country we were visiting. All areas were cleaned daily and hygiene around food areas was always available. Information was on hand to help if you wished to do something on your own. Fitness area was not well used as it was rather small with only a few items to use. Cabin was perhaps abit cramped. The only complaint was that twice there was a very unpleasant smell which lasted for several hours, it was always there when another ship came and docked alongside. I cannot fault the service and presentation of Scenic Crystal. The staff were excellent and our tour director Szilvia was outstanding. Everything was 5 star except the food. Most vegetables were frozen or commercially prepared and I found all the European fish awful, and they managed to overcook it. They did a seafood night and it was a joke. Imagine trying to give Aussies seafood when it is not sourced locally and is mostly frozen. Breakfast was the best meal of the day. The cabins and public areas were always clean and well maintained. Staff very obliging. Unfortunately there was an issue with a broken lock near Budapest so on day 12 we had to pack and transfer to another boat......the Sapphire. This was not only very inconvenient and disruptive but the rooms/bathrooms were smaller and the best staff had obviously been allocated to the Crystal. I understand this was out of Scenic,s control however river cruising always has the risk of high water (which stops all cruising) or lock issues. All the excursions were well managed however the trip to Bratislava was a total waste of time. After a 3 hour round bus trip the town offered nothing but cracked and crumbling buildings, weeds growing in the tram lines and cobblestones falling apart. If you took all the available tours I found it very tiring and quite a few passengers elected to stay on board. Personal choice but you are paying for this as ypou are for the drinks (which I do not). All I all, a great company who delivers everything they promise. Read Less

We joined the Crystal in Budapest for the first seven days of the cruise. The ship was excellent, the crew pleasant, and the captain appeared to run a tight but happy ship. Our cruise director Marin who was with us the whole journey on both ships was well informed, efficient, and dealt with everyone with courtesy and never lost his sense of humour. The transfer to the Jewel at Nuremburg was done well, they even arranged for rooms to be cleaned first for a couple of passengers who were ill. The side trips were well organised and there was plenty of choice. There was no need to spend anything once onboard unless you required laundry. We did not feel that the crew on the Jewel were as happy, the Captain did not appear very much at all and the Hotel Manager seemed to run the ship. Some of the Crew were very surly and did not engage with the passengers much. Our room was spacious and clean. The coffee/chocolate machine in the lounge was excellent. So far all good. However, and this was a big disappointment for us, the food! Too many buffet's with hot food being served on cold plates..even at breakfast, eggs and bacon on cold plates. Often the food in the evening was also served lukewarm. The menu was pretentious and you needed an interpreter. Many evenings we resorted to the everyday available chicken breast or steak, and we requested steamed vegetables as there was not much in the way of vegetables. We were even served tinned carrots and soup with globules of fat floating on top. Don't expect fine china either.....   Read Less
