We selected Scenic because of their outstanding service reputation. Porto arrival was very coordinated. We were welcomed immedialely on board and offered food and wine. The ship is new from 2017 cristening and is extremely clean. The personnel are all local and proud to show their region. Passing locks with more than 100 feet levels was exciting. We selected the included tours according to our wishes, and even did kayaking on the river. Madrid was spectacular. The meals were always original with local ingredients and delicious. With only 96 passengers from all over the world, the atmosphere was very friendly. The tour guides were certified by the local authorities and were all excited to demonstrate their extraordinary knowledge. Our Cruise Director was always happy to answer all our questions and he was present at all times. The coaches taking us to our tours were first class. One highlight was a private concert in Porto cathedral San Francisco. We highly recommend Scenic and already have booked a cruise in France next fall. Read Less

Choose Scenic as previous experience was great & were celebrating a special anniversary. The entire experience from airport pickup, embarkation, tours, meals, entertainment to disembarkation, was well organized & looked after in a top quality fashion. The all-inclusive nature of the cruise makes it far easier to enjoy all amenities without worrying about extra costs. The ship was immaculate, the cabin kept clean, the food was wonderful with lots of choices. The crew were very professional but friendly and set a high standard of service in all areas. The tours were well organized, very knowledgeable guides & took us to locations we wouldn't have gone on our our, but enjoyed. The buses used were top quality & departed & returned as scheduled. We make specific mention of our Cruise Director, Richard Gray. He worked tirelessly to make sure all details were covered off, was entertaining in his own right. We would highly recommend Scenic to all & will be traveling & river cruising with them again. Read Less

We have visited the South of France with other cruise lines but we had heard that Scenic are the best. This has now been confirmed. We have thoroughly enjoyed all the aspects of this particular cruise. The attention to detail has been wonderful. All the staff have been so attentive and everything promised has been expedited. The beds are so comfortable; the cabin is roomy. The food has been exceptionally good and we have enjoyed every meal. We have also enjoyed all the excursions which have included visits to places that had not been included in our previous tours with other companies. All the Tour Guides have been extremely knowledgeable and interesting. The food has been top class and every member of the crew has been so friendly. We have had a wonderful trip and will definitely travel with Scenic again. Already looking forward to booking another trip with Scenic. Read Less

This was my second river cruise, with both being on Scenic. So my only basis for comparison is ocean cruises, of which I've had many. So some of my comments may be due to the nature of the product and its differences from ocean cruises. Embarkation. Even though we made our own air arrangements, Scenic met us at the airport and whisked us to the ship. There were about a dozen of us, and we were taken straight to the ship in Budapest, where the prior passengers were still disembarking. They made us comfortable in the lounge, and prioritized the cleaning of our cabins, so we were able to access them quite early. This gave us the opportunity to explore Budapest a bit on our own, after a light but satisfying lunch in the River Cafe. The location of the ship--directly across from the Parliament Building--made this exploration very easy. In other words, the embarkation experience was perfect. Crew. Simply outstanding. The Hotel Director, Cruise Director, and Food & Beverage Manager were very much present, and infused the entire ship with a sense of joy. The waiters and room attendants seemed to share this sense, and made the entire experience an enjoyable one. They all handled a major glitch (see below) well. I have to say, though, that I don't get the point of the butler. Ours introduced himself the first day and was never seen again until our final evening in Portabello (the specialty restaurant), where he waited table. Much less effectively than the regular waiters, but I suppose that's to be expected. When we tried to call him for one thing, his line was busy and did not go to voicemail. We flagged down our room attendant, who happily took care of that and all other room-related matters the whole time. The people next to us had an incident where their laundry came back wet. He said he'd take care of it, but never did. They wound up hanging things around their room to dry. Food. Inconsistent. Breakfasts were wonderful, with an omelet station, plenty of buffet choices, and a galley menu of hot dishes made to order. Lunch was the weak spot, with little variety on the buffet and sometimes unappealing galley choices. Though there was a superb vegetarian goulash one day, and the soups were generally very good. Dinners were a mixed bag. A few were outstanding. The rest not so much. Evening menu main courses usually included a meat or poultry, a fish dish, and a vegetarian dish. The vegetarian choices usually depended on cheese for protein. Fish was not their strong suit--most tasted overcooked and dry, though they did nicely with salmon and halibut. They did an excellent job with lamb, and with a seafood dish for the gala dinner toward the end of the cruise. Whether the food was good or not-so-good, the waiters were outstanding. You couldn't help but enjoy any meal because of them. Beverages. Alcohol flowed freely, and the choices of included spirits were very good. The wines poured each evening for dinner were usually based on the location of the ship. Some were to my taste, some were not, but the staff bent over backwards to find us wines we would like if we did not care for the featured pour. Entertainment. The Enrich evening was at Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna--a beautiful setting and a lovely concert. Well done. Sundowners were in the lounge on the ship. Rather a disappointment. Some local acts came on in a few ports, and were interesting and entertaining. The nightly musician, Mark, was a highlight. With an engaging personality, a beautiful singing voice, great piano skills, and a good sense of the crowd for his DJ'ing, he made the evenings come alive. I would take this cruise again just for Mark. Ship's facilities. Because we were sailing in mid-October, the Sun Deck was rarely an option due to chilly weather, so the lounge tended to become crowded. All the more so because this was definitely a partying group. Because the lounge was really the only viable public space, the ship felt claustrophobic at times. We did use the upper deck for viewing the illuminations in Budapest, or to watch the ship go through the locks, but few people stayed up there for long because of the chill, particularly when the ship was moving. The gym is tiny, but has a treadmill, elliptical, bike, and rowing machine, as well as a few weights, jammed in. There is a walking track on top deck, but passengers are asked not to use it before 8:00 am, since it is over people's cabins. The salt room is supposed to be good for respiratory and skin issues, but was rarely used. I did try to use it, but found the lounges uncomfortable and the strange lighting triggered a migraine. Excursions. These were generally good to outstanding. Most were not over-populated, so thus not obnoxious. Much depended on luck of the draw in terms of guides. All but one of my guides were outstanding, peppering their talks with stories and observations that made the sites come alive. Communication. This is Scenic's weak spot. Advance information about excursions is sparse, so we found ourselves trying to make plans with very little knowledge about what the excursions would really include. This was particularly frustrating for those who had some time in the embarkation city beforehand, as they didn't know what to leave for the excursion there and what to do because it wouldn't be included. Other than that, in the end the scarcity of information was not a problem, because the cruise director, JJ, did an excellent job of laying out onboard what the tours would be like, and was very flexible in letting people switch. In the end, I don't think anyone was shut out of a tour they wanted. Glitch. Of course there was a glitch. Not water levels this time. Instead, an unusually wide cargo vessel further along in the river had an accident and destroyed its propeller. The result was that it blocked the river, backing up river boats on either side that could not get past it. We were bound for Regensburg when this happened. So it became questionable how and whether we would get there, as Scenic was being told that it could be as long as a week before it could be moved. So, while JJ and his team struggled to find arrangements for us without knowing where we would wind up, we wandered. We tied up once in front of a manufacturing plant of some kind, and I watched during breakfast as someone who looked like a local official appeared to be ordering us out of there. Sure enough, minutes later the gangplank was taken back up and off we went again, in search of a place to dock. We spent much of one night and the next morning sailing backwards (an interesting challenge for Captain and crew) toward Passau, the last port we'd left. Indeed, we wound up docking back in the Passau region, in the place where we had last docked. We were then bussed to our Regensburg-based excursions. Because of the increased bus riding times (in fact, the Regensburg walking tour was supposed to have been a step-off-the-ship-and-you're-there tour), a lot of passengers opted to stay on the ship. In fact, the bus time was, at 90 minutes, an hour less than JJ had estimated. We had a very small group with a plethora of guides, and a wonderful day. The disappointment from all of this was that we missed Nuremberg, which we were supposed to tour after disembarkation there. But we had to disembark from Passau instead. Oddly, though, not a word was said about the missing Nuremberg tour. We were left to realize on our own that this would not happen. Post-cruise. We had taken Scenic's post-cruise extension to Prague, and were glad we did. We were bussed to the Marriott, which was in a great location within walking distance to the Old City, the Lesser City, and the New City. The hotel was standard Marriott, though with lots of noisy construction going on. Fortunately, the noise ended in the evening, so we only got about an hour of it each evening, though it did accompany breakfast a couple of days. The evening we arrived, we were taken for an orientation walk around the neighborhood. The next morning was an excellent walking tour, and then the guides made themselves available that afternoon and the next day to help us plan our free time. Our guide in Prague was superb, with great stories and histories to share. She also was good with restaurant recommendations and recommendations for shops for particular purposes. My only complaint was that the group was much too large--nearly 40 people per guide--so movement was hampered. We could hear well, though, thanks to walkie-talkies, and the guide was very skillful in making sure we were all there. Read Less

We had traveled with Scenic once before. It was a delightful and memorable experience. We were entertained, wined and dined to our hearts' delight. What more could anybody ask for? The crew was capable, informed and personable. The food was exquisite and varied and the wines paired with the food very well. The breads, desserts and pastries were baked on the ship so were as fresh as possible and extremely tasty. Scenic takes great pride (justifiably) in acquiring local foods and giving the guests a taste of the area of the world where they are visiting. The excursions were geared to guests who had varied interests and physical capabilities. They informed and educated the guests of the history, culture and modern life of the area visited. All the guides are from the area so have an in depth knowledge of the land. Scenic offers a complete experience with no added charges unless you purchase something on board. That appeals to us. There are no surprise bills to sting at the end of the tour. Read Less

This was my first river cruise and won’t be my last. Had a wonderful experience on the Scenic Crystal. Wonderful staff, great excursions, food was outstanding. We came with a group of 18. Couldn’t have been a better way to travel with this many people. We had 160 people on our boat but never felt crowded. Plenty of space to accommodate our group. They had such a nice variety of excursions. Always something for all interests. The staff saw to our every need. They all seemed to work together as a team . The food was very good. Loved that we had 2 nights with different dining experience’s outside of the normal dining room. Nice variety of entertainment . Also very happy with the way they timed everything. Never felt rushed or over scheduled but yet we saw and did so much. Very well organized and run operation. Loved that everything was included. No upgrades required. Thank You Scenic Crystal for a wonderful first River Cruise. Read Less

Chose this cruise because it included everything. We feel we are now spoiled for any other company.Low water levels meant we couldn't cruise between Regensburg and Passau so we were stuck in Passau for a few days. Scenic handled it brilliantly and bussed those who wanted to see Nuremberg .We chose to do the extra trip to Passau which is beautiful. The ship was very modern and stable .Didn't feel any movement . Only heard noise going through the locks . Excellent showers in the cabins, wonderful beds. I thought my bed at home was soft until last night when the mattress felt hard in comparison. The food and wine plentiful. I put on six pounds in weight. Brilliant pianist,Mark, every night.. The classical concert at the Palace Liechtenstein in Vienna is memorable. Hungarian dancers on our last night. Great fun. Loved the great mix of people on board everyone was so friendly. I have left the best to last. The marvellous crew. They couldn't do enough for you. Always smiling, always friendly. We have been cruising many years,Twenty five in all, mostly ocean cruises and all the different companies . This was our first with Scenic .Hubby has now stated any future ones will be with Scenic. Read Less

We started sailing on the Scenic Ruby but due to low water changed to the Scenic Crystal. I didn’t realise there were water level issues and its a lesson for all to note that. We were lucky to have a scenic boat coming the other other way and passengers simply changed. We had an excellent cruise director Alex who managed the lot. The facilities were excellent on every level of accommodation, some complained about smash showers in the lower floors We were on for 15 days and that was my limit. The ruby had better service that the crystal but the Crystal was a better boat My lessons are -Pack light, most people didn’t dress up, and laundry was quick and reliable -Check out water levels before you travel and get insurance -See which boards have Alex as cruise director -DOnt feel obliged to go on every tour, it was exhausting Read Less

This review is mainly about river boat cabins, and how size is far from everything. That will be in the cabin review section below. In short, the bulk of cabins on the Scenic Sapphire, and most if not all Scenic river boats, are classified as Balcony Suites. They are cramped and not very well-designed. Most other things about the cruise were very good. In particular the shore excursions provided an excellent choice and the guides were good. (Not so the earpieces, which often caused problems, with a couple of guides abandoning them altogether.) Departures on shore excursions were not well-organised. The cruise director, who was very good, was generally ashore getting buses and guides organised. There were no staff with sufficient authority to herd the cats on board, with the result that passengers milled about pointlessly in the foyer. This led to pathetic cries from staff: "The captain will kill me." With the odd exception, food was very good. Service in the dining room was good, with waiters trained in a fixed routine, at least for dinner. Service in the lounge was haphazard at best. Staff seemed poorly trained. They wandered around not making eye contact. It was quite possible to sit for 20 minutes without being offered a drink. Waiters would come nearby and waft past. They had to be called. Although all drinks including champagne were supposed to be included, if you asked for champagne, you got non-champagne sparkling wine. It was almost comical the way the barman hid the bottle. The boat was very shipshape and did not look at all tired. The gym was almost useless. There were free weights but no bench! Probably can't expect more on a river boat. Read Less

The most relaxing active vacation ever! Sounds strange but it’s true; active because there is often something going on or somewhere to be, relaxing because Scenic takes care of all the logistics. It truly was all inclusive; no tipping, even on the airport transfers from/to home. Scenic bills itself as 5 star all-inclusive so we were disappointed to read in the information booklet that “if we received exceptional service” we were free to add a gratuity. Sorry, for what we paid, exceptional service was expected! 68 locks, 803 bridges so it’s definitely a worry about low/high water levels. We were very fortunate as a few days after we passed Passau ship swaps happened. Cabin 206 was perfectly situated, bed was very comfortable, roomy shower with rain head and hand held shower wands. Ample storage; everything was soft close (cupboards, drawers, cabinets, toilet seat). Very impressed with the number of outlets. Great lighting and mirrors make the cabin seem very spacious. We had a couple of minor things that needed attention and, within a half hour, the issues were resolved. Excellent service. The individual blankets had not been washed prior to our arrival so we made sure not to put them back in their zippered pouch so that our cabin steward was aware they had been used and needed cleaning. Our cabin steward was excellent – the best we’ve ever had. They make a big deal about your “butler” but, other than introducing herself the first day, we had no interaction with her at all. That being said, we didn’t have any need for the included services or they were provided by other individuals. Toiletries were great. Hair dryer, Nordic walking sticks, large umbrella, ear plugs, even a long handled shoe horn were provided. Undecided if the sun lounge was worth the additional cost; rafting and/or facing public areas often left us unable to enjoy it but it does make for a larger cabin. Breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent; lots of variety and the breads at lunch were awesome. The pastry chef was outstanding; apple turnovers, croissants and other breakfast pastries were light and flaky. I absolutely loved the butter machine which provided a fresh portion of butter at the touch of a button; definitely a hit with all guests. There are fresh made options available for both breakfast and lunch. Smoothies were tasteless as was the “flavoured” water served at the Late Riser Breakfast in the River Café. We had lunch served in River Café when we opted out of the excursion to Salzburg and, while the selection was fine, the food was lukewarm. The same situation with the Sun Deck BBQ. The warming trays just don’t do the job. They do not serve “fresh” milk and we normally drink milk at lunch and dinner. Opted not to visit Portobellos as we didn't like the menu (beef cheeks!) and we don't drink alcohol so the wine pairing wasn't of interest. Very small portions for dinner. Even by Canada Food Guide recommendations Scenic portions fall far below the minimum requirements. Vegetables and starch are almost non existent! My husband has a small appetite and TWICE he woke up hungry during the night; NEVER happened before in his 72 years! There are limited selections; two cold appetizer options, two hot appetizer options, one soup, one meat, one fish and one vegetarian. Fortunately they have “always available” options. Soups were “made with love” but would definitely benefit from being made with cream. They were watery despite being called “cream of”. My husband said the soup spoons were more like shovels and would come in handy digging in the garden. Meal descriptions left much to be desired and were often not an accurate depiction of what the meal really was. We only ordered room service once and the meal was delivered promptly and the food was piping hot. I have menus and pictures of the meals at: https://www.flickr.com/gp/22259946@N08/Fi6264 With the exception of one employee who twice refused to take an order for coffee in two different venues on two different days to two different people (he just pointed and said “self-serve”) everyone was friendly, efficient and eager to please. There was wonderful interaction between staff members and a very warm environment. Some great moves were witnessed on disco night! Our cruise director Richard (distant relation of Richard the Lionheart) was entertaining, knowledgeable and energetic. Miljenko, Restaurant Manager, was charming and always willing to assist with food concerns. Mario Alberto, Hotel Manager, was an absolute delight and ran the operations with a warm smile and a firm commitment to guest satisfaction. The reception staff were wonderful; always a ready smile and can do attitude. There were 148 guests; Australia, New Zealand, Canada, U.K., a few Americans and one couple from Curacao. It was a great group with everyone having an enjoyable time without any drunken behaviour in spite of the included alcohol. Unfortunately a few guests didn’t make use of the hand sanitizer, complimentary water, shampoo and shower gel and preferred “au naturale” to using deodorant. Opal Lounge had ample, comfortable seating but the very low black tables were a hazard at night as both a tripping issue and trying to find the surface to place your glass. I loved the glass straws! Being non-alcohol drinkers we would have appreciated frozen mocktails. Hot chocolate, teas and coffee available 24/7 in the Opal Lounge was excellent. We were pleased with the offered entertainment. We enjoyed listening to David; a talented musician. The excursions were well organized and stress free. We especially enjoyed the Palais Liechtenstein concert and we have NO interest in classical music. It was definitely an experience not to be missed as was the visit and feast at Marksburg Castle. The banquet is for everyone, the Castle Tour is definitely NOT for anyone with mobility issues or a fear of falling. We really enjoyed the high lock experience, it was so well done with dramatic music added! The highlight for us was sitting on the Sun Deck soaking in the passing scenery between Koblenz and Rudesheim. Life just doesn’t get any better than this. The Scenic Taylormade app was hit and miss on excursions but the City Guides and River View options were excellent. We would rate our experience a 10 but, value for money, 7-8. We’re glad we ticked this experience off our bucket list but with the high cost and the anxiety over water levels it’s not something we’ll do again. Read Less

Our travel agent recommended Scenic. The all inclusive feature made it attractive and a great choice. The ship was top of it's class, clean and well kept. The staff could not be beat, friendly, professional and always pleasant, remembered everyone's names and you never lacked for refreshments. The shore excursions were great but often exhausting and challenging for those with mobility issues. The dining area was large enough but an improvement would be to have reserved tables for dinner. We found the food was often not hot, small portions and lacked that "wow" factor. The "TailorMade", the excursion communication system, needs improvement. It's heavily promoted but has lots of flaws. It's not friendly for the age group Scenic promotes, seniors. The concept is good but goes mute in the castles, range is limited, constantly needs charging and too many choices in the menu. Even the tour guides don't like it. But it was still an amazing time. Read Less

The service was first class and the shore excursions were well planned and included all the highlights I wanted to see. The Enrich Experiences were incredible and offered an unexpected element to our experience. I liked that the cruise was all inclusive and that there were only 110 passengers on board. Scenic came highly recommended by our travel agent and she was spot on. From the pickup at our hotel in Amsterdam to our departure in Budapest, Scenic provided a first class experience. Our Cruise director made the trip exceptional with his knowledge of the ports we visited and his daily port talk. Our balcony cabin was spacious and well maintained throughout our cruise. The food was Michelin star quality, with quality rather than quantity being the rule of the day. His dinners echoed the regions we were passing through and there was a good variety of options on the menu to choose from. Unlike shows provided on large ocean going ships, the daily entertainment usually highlighted talent from the port we had just visited and there was an awesome pianist who provided entertainment throughout the trip. Would I recommend Scenic for those seeking a River cruise, without a moments hesitation. Although Scenic may be a bit expensive, I always believe you get what you pay for and I feel we got more than our monies worth on this trip. Kudos to Scenic for providing a memorable trip. Read Less

What an experience! Customer service levels off the Richter scale!! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The Chef, Steve Groves was charming and so modest! Greg Wallace was a bundle of energy and made time for everyone, we learnt so much about his life, such an interesting man. The oyster schuking was memorable and even those not keen were happy to listen and learn. The Head Chef Mattias was a lively character who gave entertaining demonstrations. The whole cruise was geared around food snd wine, taking us to some of the mist stunning vinyards in the Bordeaux region. It was action packed with talks and wine tasting in some of the most beautiful chateaus. The music extravaganza bresthtaking set in the fairy tale Chateau d'Agassac. A beautiful ship visiting the best of the region, stunning scenery and top class local guides, full of personality and information. The Cruise Director Andreea, was full of energy and never flagged, always happy to help and make you feel valued. My favourite wine tasting was at the beautiful Chateau de la Riviere! This was our second river cruise. The first cruise was with UniWorld and he had a great experience, this time around we chose Scenic as their luxury brand was something that we couldn't ignore. We certainly made the right choice. The rooms were larger (we had suites on both cruises) on Scenic, the food was quite good for the most part (some hit and miss but found that on our other cruise as well), but what really stood out to us was the staff. The staff on the Scenic Sapphire were nothing short of amazing. From top to bottom we felt welcome, valued and always taken care of. In fact when the cruise was over and we were staying in Nice for an extra day, we ended up calling the ship to get/verify information about airport shuttles and they immediately took our call and helped us. They didn't just dump us off and forgot about us, they took the time to help us when we asked. From the cleaning staff to the restaurant staff, to the crew members who would ask me if I needed anything when they didn't have to, to the front desk staff and the captain, everyone was extremely nice, friendly and they made our experience the best it could possibly be. For this reason alone I will continue to use Scenic on future cruises. Take a bow, staff of the Scenic Sapphire, you truly made our trip an experience to remember. Thank you! Read Less

It was a bit more than other cruise lines but everything was included. You did not ever have to take out your wallet unless you wanted to buy something for yourself. The food was absolutely amazing and the staff felt like family by the end of the cruise. They took an extra effort to get to know you and to remember your name. There was a lot of excursions to choose from and they were all included and were excellent. Their buses were waiting for you at each stop and they were the top of the line buses with excellent drivers. It was such a relaxing time and amazing to sit up on the top deck with a glass of wine and watch the beautiful scenery along the Danube river. The service was top notch. Anything you asked for was brought to you immediately. We were on the second floor and our room was quite roomy. The beds were king size and very very comfortable. There was local entertainment brought on to the boat at nearly every port and was quite enjoyable. There was always a piano player as well. I would highly recommend this cruise line. This is the first trip I have ever taken that I was not ready to go home. I could have stayed for at least another week or longer!! Read Less

Wow! I have never been so spoiled! It was amazing, I truly believe that every staff member wants you to have the absolute best time are there to make sure it happens. From the initial greeting when we got to the boat to the time we left. One of the highlights was When the chef would come out after each port talk and let you know the culinary masterpiece that he had prepared for you that evening. We were never hungry... The wait staff were always very attentive and polite and never left you wanting for anything (my husband may have had a couple of 2 dessert nights). The wine glasses were never empty. The excursions were top notch with really great guides. The cruise director JJ did such a great job of explaining all the possible excursions the first night that we actually ended up changing a couple of our choices and were not disappointed. The room and ship were luxurious and tastefully decorated. It was worth every dollar spent and I would definitely go on another scenic cruise. Read Less

This ship is a 5 star hotel and the service is fantastic. I also loved the app for your phone that alerted you to points of interest you sailed by, and that you could look up info on all the cities along the route. Also loved that fact that once you paid the fare everything was included, no surprises at the end of the cruise. Highly recommend Scenic Cruises! Embarkation and disembarkation was very organized and went smoothly. The ports of call and shore excursions were well organized and very interesting. I would have liked to have more than 1 day in Budapest and maybe 1 less day in Vienna. The entertainment was very good with a good variety and many special things only for Scenic like the classical music concert at Palais Liechtenstein, and the Salzburg Sound of Music Show. Our cruise director, Richard Grey, did an excellent job of organizing local talents to come on board to entertain us. Al in all I would highly recommend Scenic Tours and I plan to travel with them again. Read Less

We chose this ship as it is brand new... never again. The design of this ship is dreadful as there is almost no seating areas outside and if you do find a seat outside if the helecopter is in operation the noise is unbearable. For some reason they have put the swimming pool inside the restaurant along with sunbeds and showers! With water from the pool splashing on to the restaurant floor Needless to say no one used it. The cabins are well equipped and have very comfortable beds. One very important point.. there are no signs that the food may contain nuts... be aware if you have a nut allergy as there is nut based food served everywhere. I spoke to the head chef about this but this fell on deaf ears. We were asked if we had a special occasion while we were on the ship. We spoke to the restaurant manager because it was our 40th wedding anniversary He forgot! And then made light of it the next day.. this is not six star service! I felt the destinations had not been researched at all and some were completely inappropriate in my opinion. This was not a ship that I would ever sail on again Read Less

We chose this as it was to be a discovery expedition, which in reality it wasn’t. The ship itself wasn’t completed. The cabins weren’t ready of finished, the decks outside were still being finished and had contractors working night and day. Issues with machines in laundry, gang planks weren’t working, the list goes on . There wasn’t enough seating at the buffet at breakfast and lunch, also they needed a buffet for the evening for those that didn’t want to go to dinner every night. Also need more variety in the restaurants. No wardrobe space for hanging clothes. TV was hard to work also hard to see because your reflection was visible in the mirrored screen, you also couldn’t see it from bed. Paid premium price for a mediocre cruise. Could not fault the staff though they all worked hard to try and give everyone a pleasant stay. The excursions were not well thought out, not enough space on Whale watching ship for everyone, also not enough wet weather gear to go around. Looked forward to this cruise for the past three years and was disappointed from the time they delayed the boarding until the time we disembarked. Read Less

This is a very hard review to write, because the ship has been designed to be to many things that are so different, which is difficult to achieve. The design has certainly tried to incorporate a high degree of luxury and speciality gourmet dinning venues in an expedition vessel with many unique features. So from my point of view, I really have to review it on the basis that it is an expedition ship or discovery yacht (as Scenic like to call it) with the ability to view the landscape and nature from the ship as well as from the air and below the surface of the water. It was for these features and the region it was to travel that I chose this cruise, even long before building of the ship had even started. The ship certainly looks the part from the outside with modern lines and a purposeful structure. However on in the inside the design deficiencies of trying to be too many things, become much more apparent. It seems as though there has been too much effort put into making it modern and futuristic with little or no thought into making it practical or functional. The Eclipse is a paperless ship, so there is an overuse of electronics which as we all know do not always work as they should and in many instances are confusing or complicated to operate. And when they go wrong, no manual or conventional system is able to take it place. From a safety point of view the hand rails which are square in profile have sharp edges and corners as do many handles, taps and tables. These may be in fashion at the moment and look good, but can catch you or your clothing which may be dangerous on a moving ship. The dark colours which prevail throughout the ship together with mirrored surfaces everywhere are not conducive to an older generation of passengers, which I would assume will be a large part of the Eclipse future income. Most modern expedition ships have forward and aft lifts or stairs, the Eclipse only has only has one set which are situated more towards the stern of the ship. This means easy access to the outer decks is very limiting and certainly can take a lot longer. It is important on a true expedition cruise, to have quick and easy access to outer decks and indoor observation areas to view nature and wildlife as soon as possible after sighting. Unfortunately the observation lounge has very limited forward vision but at least allows good access to the large outer bow deck. Also this lounge only has self-serve tea and coffee and no bar, while the restrooms are along way a way at the stern. The outside observation deck is good for viewing nature and wild life but deck 10 which is all outside, is a really good area for viewing as it give a 360 degree view. Mind you a part of this deck is set aside for smoking. This deck like most deck has a very large protruding roof structure which is a benefit in raining conditions but can be a hindrance to viewing birds and mountains from certain areas such as the observation lounge. The main lounge is very open with the reception at one end and the main bar at the other which makes it very open and probably less personal. The seating layout and design does not help in making the area as friendly as other expedition ships. Dinning venues are generally good but all with limited seating. There is no buffet option for dinner which is not ideal for a true expedition ship either. Some passengers just want a quick meal and get to bed early after a long days adventure. The main theatre is round and has very comfortable seating, unfortunately a couple of large pillars block vision from some of the seats. With a full complement of passengers the theatre would be very hard pressed to fit them all in, which will be a problem sometimes. The use of plain dark carpet in areas of the ship was probably not a good decision, as it almost always looked dirty as did some of the dark glass tables. Suites are generally dark and bland with reflective surfaces everywhere. Almost no warmth has been added. Our suite had one blueish toned painting, which only made the room feel even colder. Although the TV is very modern, it was set behind glass which meant you could not view it from any reasonable angle, even in bed, because of reflections. If you sat directly in front of the TV for viewing, you had the pleasure of seeing yourself reflected in the glass. As well the TV menu and remote control was more confusing than normal, and very slow to respond to button control, quite frustrating in fact. The cabin itself has a very thin curtain to the balcony and an electronic blind which lowers to darken the room at night. The problem with this setup is that, not only was it noisy to operate but also if you wanted to look out at night while your partner slept, the noise and possible additional night would wake them up anyway. The suite we were in was a deluxe verandah which was good in size but had limited drawer and wardrobe space. The wardrobe doors block access in and out of the bathroom when opened and there are no additional hooks in the suite to hang expedition clothing such as hats or jackets. Suite bathrooms do not have a conventional hand basin. Instead they have a sloping flat surface to take water away, so there is no plug. This not only means it cannot be used for washing personal clothing but the design also tend to splash much more water everywhere, including over oneself. As mentioned before, handles are square and on the shower door they are really sharp, certainly an accident waiting to happen. The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning, which covers a good temperature range, is effective and easy to adjust. The internet throughout the ship is generally very good and seems to have a higher capacity with less dropouts than other ships we have travelled on. Staff to passenger ratio is very favourable, however it is my understanding that staff quarters have been built to the very minimum standard, which is small. Only time will tell if that is the case, and that will be through staff turnover. I know a number of staff left the ship in Quebec. The ship itself is very smooth and relative quite. It certainly handles rougher conditions better than most other expedition ships and its dynamic positioning system is brilliant. This system means it does not have to drop anchor but can stay in the one position with almost no movement. However the side thrusters, which keep the ship in position, do create some problems for zodiac drivers as they approach the ship. The idea of having helicopters and a submarine to enhance the experience is certainly very appealing and the experience is certainly worth while. Unfortunately there will be many instances where they will be unable to be used due to local restrictions or weather conditions. With passenger expectations high for these experiences, the Eclipse could have some very unhappy customers at times. Local restrictions may become a bigger issue in certain regions in the future for both the helicopters and submarine. In summary the ship itself is very good but it certainly could have been better, in fact world class, had there been much more functionality designed into its main purpose, which I assume is a discovery yacht. Although I did not chose to sail on a maiden voyage, unfortunately that is the way it turned out. So how did this inaugural voyage from Reykjavik to Quebec, on the Scenic Eclipse go. It certainly did not start well. Three days prior departure we were advised that boarding the time would be delayed by three hours from midday. Instead a room at a local hotel near the port was made available for meeting, and a light lunch was provided. We all waited until around 3pm the revised boarding time, when we were advised that boarding would not take place for another 24 hours. Scenic staff then spent several hours arranging accommodation at various hotels all around Reykjavik. The whole process was handled so badly that passengers became extremely unhappy. Scenic also offered us to board the ship for drinks that evening. Many passengers took up the opportunity to view the ship, which may have been a mistake as we were able to see just how unready the ship really was for the cruise. To fill in the following day Scenic offered a full day, which turned out to be very good. After the tour we did board the ship, and saw just how tired and wore out the staff really were from preparing the ship for us to board. They must have worked day and night without much sleep, never-the-less to their credit they still had a smile for some very unhappy passengers. Realistically the ship was several weeks from being ready for sailing with passengers. To highlight how unprepared they were for passengers at the safety drill there was no check list to make sure everyone attended and when they did try to do a roll call too many were not present so they gave up and said it was all over. During the first few days there were many issues, certainly far to many to mention here, but overtime everything started to improve and by the time we reached Canada things were running quite smoothly and everyone seemed to be enjoy the cruise even with issues remaining. Food quality varied from average all the way up to exceptional. Hotel staff were friendly and generally good to excellent while the expedition staff were very competent and did a great job in making the experience more enjoyable. Over time I’m sure the ship will become a top quality product, but its design issues will remain, which is ashame. Read Less

Wanted to visit Amsterdam and Germany and it was the perfect way to do it. We chose the Scenic Ruby as the ship and decor was very modern. We had the room at the rear of the ship. The rear window was wide that we didn’t have to leave our room to see the beautiful river scenery especially the castles. The food and service was five star, all our needs were met by our wonderful butler with early morning coffee and breakfast in our room. There was a also a full buffet breakfast in the dining room with a great selection of cold and hot food. Evening meals were five star. The daily soups are to die for. As you cruise through the towns and past the vineyards you get to try the lovely wines and beers in that area with you meals. It seemed happy hour all day. The bar staff would were very attentive and ready to mix your favourite cocktails. The musical entertainment on board was excellent. There was a good selection of shore excursions. Our Cruise Director was informative advising us of the next days’ tours and departure times. Comfortable coaches and guides were ready each day to take us on our guided tours. This was certainly a five star cruise. Read Less
