I thought the ship and the food were excellent and we were happy with our cabin. Most of the staff were very obliging and friendly with one or two being a bit abrupt. I was disappointed with some of the shore excursions. I thought that the entertainment on board was average with just the one pianist. Our cruise was the Black Sea Explorer with Transylvania but we did not get to see the Back Sea due to the water levels in the Danube River. I accept that this can sometimes be the case. However no alternative means of transporting us to the Black Sea was offered. This was a great disappointment. We chose this cruise because it was different and we wanted to see the Iron Gates and the Black Sea. Given my experience, I probably would not choose to do another riverboat cruise. I am sorry to be negative in this instance because we have travelled many times with Scenic and have had nothing but praise for our trips. Read Less

I have always wanted to try a river cruise because I have always travelled on ocean cruises. I liked the smaller amount of people, the ports were exquisite, you could see land on both sides of the ship always, no rocking of the boat, the excursions were good except for one where we could not understand our guide. The cons were there was not a lot of choice as far as food, the rooms are small with some issues of smelling the drain in the shower. There was also issues with the woman’s bathroom on one of the floors. Another common thing is changing ships because the water level being low. Talking to the crew this happens almost every time and in that case you are shuttled to the next ship or to your next excursion but that usually is hours away. I’m glad I did it but will think hard about doing it again. Read Less

Our Scenic 5***** Tsar Cruise in 2017, from Moscow to Saint Petersburg, was so marvelous in every way that it inspired us to take the Scenic Pearl cruise and explore Gems of the Danube with Prague, from Budapest to Prague in 2019. Unfortunately, we are not inspired anymore. We cannot call Gems of Danube a Five Star Cruise and we assigned the Stars as follows: Staff: The only aspect of the Gems of Danube that was 5***** star was the Pearl Cruise Manager and the entire staff. They could not have been better in any respect and with a great sense of humor. Food: Breakfast and Lunch were excellent. However, dinners definitely need a new chef. The one we had would be good for a 2** restaurant. Cabin with balcony: 3 ½ *** Much smaller than on the Russian Tsar. Two people could not pass each other, very small washroom space. Very narrow balcony. If you sat on the chair your back would be against the wall and your knees (if you are 5 to 5’3”) would be pressed against the outside railing. Daily Tours: 2 ½ to 3*** Absolutely no comparison to the Russian Tour in any way . Why? The emphasis of the Gems of the Danube tours is on the “Tailormade City Guide” devices. You are drilled on that every evening instead of having interesting lectures about the country you came to visit as we had on the Tsar. The Tsar Cruise city tours were thoroughly informative, at a leisurely pace and the guides were aware of every guest. The Gem tours were all about 3 ½ hours of marching through the city. The guides, except for the one in Regensburg who obviously cared, marched on explaining the surroundings not looking or caring about their group. If you stopped to take a photo or two, you had to run to catch up. Of course, we had our “tailormade” devices and could hear the guide two blocks away, but you had no idea what she was talking about. Some of the 3 ½ hour tours were spent on the bus and here you could view the “in depth city tour” through the bus window. The tour of the famous Belvedere Museum unfortunately allotted us time to see only Klimt’s paintings. It seems like the 5 *Scenic Tours were looking to economize on the Danube Gems with Prague. Passau and all the afternoons were your own responsibility. There was no Nuremberg. You were told to take the metro, tram, or shuttle and do your own exploring, which never happened in Russia. In Russia there were always guided programs for the afternoons and evening theatres. We thought that paying Scenic Tours Cruise for taking us to explore the Gems of the Danube with Prague would save us the job of planning the entire trip ourselves. Silly us. Read Less

Advertising led expectations that were not fulfilled. 1. Never docked near any major city attraction, 2. Going over and through other boats at dockside was difficult, 3. Long walks to buses which delivered you at great distances from your attraction. 4. Cabins very small. Limited storage space for clothing 5. Staff excellent, very attentive 6. Food spotty at times 7. This would have been an excellent value for money if not for the problems stated above. 9. Cruise director superior and well organized. Having to change from one boat to another in mid cruise was difficult since it necessitated totally packing up and leaving a crew that was starting to work well with the passenger core. This necessitated working with a new ships crew who in spite of efforts to be friendly showed some resentment at the passenger switch. When docked in tandem with any Viking ship, we were not allowed to pass through their lobby. This meant difficulty transferring their ship in order to get on shore. This only occurred with Viking ships. All others allowed us to pass through their lobby. 0ther boat personnel were happy to assist with our transit. Read Less

We booked this on our travel agents recommendation, as we told her that we wanted a 5+ star experience and the best ship/company. Also, this was our first river cruise. We've done about a dozen ocean cruises on various lines. Needless to say we were quite disappointed. Overall the staff on board was great. Super friendly, accommodating and tried really hard. The ship itself is old, dated and really needs a good cleaning and updating. The lounge area was always too hot, and all the hallways and lounge smelled like stinky socks all the time. Our room was booked in October and was one of the last balconies left at that time. It was the one directly next to the engine room and was SO noisy. We used ear plugs, but still never slept for the entire week. The Scenic App was always frustrating and didn't work well. The information given about the tours was always lacking (on the ocean cruises you can watch a TV channel that gives descriptions about the tours so you can decide what you want to do). The food was only okay. For the huge price we paid, we did not feel good value. And again, not a 5-star experience. Felt more like a generous 3-star in our opinion. Read Less

We chose this cruise based on the marketing done by scenic and had expectations of a five star luxury cruise. This was not the case, the air conditioning on the ship was inconsistent in the lounge and the bar service was slow with inattentive servers. The first time we called our “butler”, there was no answer. Apparently, they are also waiters and thus not always readily available. The housekeeping section was excellent with the cabin clean and well stocked. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly, and entertainment focused on local culture themes. The guides on the port excursions were excellent and the food was good. The special concert was a memorable moment and thoroughly enjoyed. We had an issue on an excursion in Vienna. As per the daily itinerary we received, we boarded bus number 4 for 9 am. Apparently, the cruise director had changed the bus destinations and made an announcement in the lounge at 845. We were unaware that we should meet in the lounge, as this was not on our itinerary. Normally we would have been understanding with this miscommunication, except that there had been plenty of opportunities for the cruise director to ensure all guests were informed. There was no sign on the bus identifying the destination; no lists or number of passengers were provided to the guides to ensure all passengers were on board the appropriate bus. Ironically, we had actually passed by the cruise director when exiting the ship. When the guide contacted the cruise director to explain the issue, his response was to tell us to take a cab and bring him receipts. Personally, I expected better support from scenic. Upon our return to the ship the cruise director asked if we had receipts and eventually apologized. The issue was not the cost of the cab and entrance fee it was about being in a foreign country with no cellphone and having to solve this issue with absolutely no assistance from scenic. We did eventually find the correct excursion however scenic had not even contacted the guide to be on the lookout for us. The purpose of booking the scenic cruise was to avoid having to travel on our own and enjoy a stress free holiday with included excursions and no worries. This was definitely not the case. Two days later we did receive a written apology from the cruise director and an on-board credit. We enjoyed the cruise on the Danube, however we will not be recommending scenic to our friends based on the poor customer service by the cruise director. The onus was put on the passenger to inquire about last minute itinerary changes and very little communication/info was provided in advance. Read Less

We chose the 14 day river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest with 3 days in Paris (Westin Hotel) at the start and 3 days in Prague (Art Deco Imperial Hotel) at the end. This was our first river cruise but we have been on 5 ocean cruises in the last 3 years. Scenic was pitched to us as 5 star all the way and it simply did not live up to its reputation. The Paris and Prague portions were excellent with great tour directors, hotels and excursions. We had free time and could walk most places. The high speed train from Paris to Amsterdam was excellent with good food and drink service as well as a comfortable seat. The transfer to Prague was via a long coach ride and we got stuck in two traffic jams due to accidents. A train transfer should be considered by Scenic. The cruise itself was underwhelming. The cabin was small but well appointed and comfortable. Our room steward was phenomenal and kept our room clean and well stocked including the mini bar. The balcony was nice but the window was loud to open and took about 15 seconds each way. Unfortunately due to the vast number of ships sailing this route we ended up tied alongside another ship for half of our time in Port. This meant that you couldn't really use the balcony and needed to keep the curtains closed which meant that you basically had an inside room. Balcony was a waste of time money. The food was a mixed bag. Both breakfast and lunch was served buffet style in the main dining room with an option for a la carte from a menu. The layout of the buffet was terrible with people not knowing which way to go and line ups for omelettes etc longer than I've experienced before and there was only 160+ onboard. Breakfast food was quite good but lunch here was not worth it and we generally went for the light lunch in the lounge upstairs which was less crowded. Dinner was great some nights including Portobellos and average some others as was the service. Definitely not 5 star dining and certainly the worst food overall that we have had on any cruise. The drink service was excellent including bar snacks before dinner. The excursions were also a mixed bag and as usual dependant on the tour guide. They varied from poor to very good but at this price point you expect excellent across the board. We discovered that the "Sundowner" excursion included in our package was only going to be drinks and snacks on the sun deck and not in a more exotic location as on other Scenic cruises. It never occurred anyways because shortly before that day they ran the stern of the ship aground briefly during the night, waking everyone up and damaging the propeller and other parts of the propulsion system. This necessitated placing the ship in dry dock for one day. The cruise director did a great job of rescheduling most of the excursions but some people missed out and we spent a lot of hours on a coach killing time until the ship was back in the water. The Captain, basically non communicative during the entire cruise, gave a poor and perhaps dishonest explanation of what occurred and why which satisfied few onboard. The "Sundowner" event never happened and was never mentioned again. Be aware that this cruise goes through 68 locks which are interesting at first and during dinner but not as much during the night after going through 40 already. We found a few crew members both unhappy and rude which we have never experienced before on any cruise. The majority however were very friendly and accommodating. The entertainment on board each evening was listed as live but was generally a DJ. One of our group complained one night and he switched to playing and singing live for a while which was quite good. The local entertainment they brought onboard several times in the afternoon was always excellent and we could have used more of that. Read Less

Unfortunately we were sailing in an unlucky year as 2018 saw one of the driest condition on the rivers in 100 years. So we weren’t able to sail on our assign ship the Opal. Our embarkation didn’t happen on Oct 24 as scheduled because no ship could reach Budapest. We were able to finally board the Jewel on Oct 28 in Regensburg. The ship was comfortable and it was smooth sailing, we had a good crew. The cabin was small but clean and comfortable, the little balcony was nice when we could open our curtains. Our butler wasn’t the most attentive as we hardly saw him, when we did he was a bit argumentative although reasonably nice. The food and drink selections were great, the service in the dining room/lounge etc was superb. The onboard entertainment was very nice and we enjoyed it. The ports and shore excursions were also very nice. The only thing negative to say about those is related to the drought complications and the fact that to go to Salzburg we had to do another 31/2 hours each way by bus, so way too much time spend in the bus and our visit in Salzburg was very short and felt rushed. We made used of the ebikes once, and it wasn’t a good experience because my husband fell and we were forced to return to the ship. When back there I asked if they had a first aid kit. Unfortunately even though they had one it was quite lacking in supplies such as peroxide to clean wounds and antiseptic cream for example. They could really improve in the stocking of their first aid supplies. We were given assurance that there would be compensation for the days we missed on the boat. We were told that we would get a letter within 7days of our return providing the final amount we are able to claim. We have been back now 9 days and are still waiting for a sign of the letter. We choose this cruise because we had done the Rhine and this looked like a decent alternative for our next cruise. The day trips on this cruise required more bus time then the Rhine cruise which made for long long days. The low water level caused us to have to change ships too days prior to the end of the cruise this made for hectic travel time of packing and unpacking. The kitchen and bar staff were great however the butler service was a lacking compared to the service we received two years prior on the Scenic Crystal. For example all the products in the min fridge were not to our liking so www asked the butler to change the items in the mini fridge i.e. more beer less wine and on this trip he stated that the mini fridge has a fixed set up and can not be changed however on the Crystal the butler was only too happy to make the changes. This is why we rated to trip in some ares mediocre. However the money we paid of the trip was top dollar. Read Less

We booked a 14 day cruise with Scenic from Budapest to Amsterdam, and had a very mixed experience. Due to low water levels (not Scenic's fault), we ended up on three different ships (the Amber, the Jade and the Ruby; the original itinerary was supposed to be Pearl). Overall, the facilities, food and drinks were fine and the crews on both the Amber and the Ruby were outstanding. Where things came unraveled were in communications and the transfers between ships necessitated by the low water. We were transferred on the eighth day, by bus, from Passau to the Scenic Jade in Nuremberg, although we had been told that the water was only low between Passau and Regensberg, thereby bypassing 100 km of river. The crew on the Jade were obviously upset about something (some were downright surly for a while). Then on day 11, we took a smaller third party day transit boat (obviously arranged at the last minute and very poorly appointed) from Rudesheim to Marksburg Castle, then we were bused back to the ship in Rudesheim and next day we were bused for over 3 hours from Rudesheim all the way to Cologne, basically bypassing the entire Rhine gorge, even though we saw, from the bus, the Scenic Pearl sailing upriver at Lorelei. After the bus ride, we had to wait in Cologne for another four hours for our luggage; the courier driver had gotten lost, we were told. The tour of the cathedral in Cologne was an unmitigated disaster. Clearly, Scenic had dropped the ball in dealing with the low water level contingency plans. We felt we were misled on several occasions. We were offered C$526 total compensation out of about C$20K paid and haven't heard back from Scenic on our requests for further compensation. We won't be sailing with Scenic again. Read Less

We did a European river boat cruise with Scenic. With river cruises you need to be aware that if river levels are either to high or to low your cruise may become a bus tour. We were very fortunate that we were able to go all the way from Budapest to Amsterdam. The ports we came to were all beautiful and full of history. Our ships cruise director did a wonderful job. Scenic gears there excursions to an older age group 60-75ish. What we were really disappointed in was the service and food. The morning meals when order from kitchen often took a long time and came out cold. The same happened at lunch. The buffet if you came later was often cold as well. At dinner time the meat was often very dry and limited menu to order from. Even though we struggled with the food we did have some excellent service from Antonio and Royanto. We did use room service 4 times. Twice we got what we wanted once the order was wrong and once it never showed up. We were disappointed with the cabin Stewart. She never gave us clean towels or glasses unless we asked for them This should of been done daily. Our bar fridge was not filled up daily as it should of been. We had to complain to front desk a few times in order to get things done properly. Read Less

We had to join this boat after spending some 8 hours transferring from the Jade to join Jasper. So we had an early start to go to Salzburg and then onto see the Sounds of Music show up in the mountains, that said we had very little time to explore Saltzburg which was a shame, it was rushed, The actual show was better than the previous show we experienced at Marksburg Castle, more refined and the food/drink was much better. The actual Austrian orchestra and singers were very good. After leaving the show we had a reasonably long coach drive to Melk where we joined the Jasper, when we arrived at the docking area the boat crew were having to man handle every suitcases along the jetty to the boat which did not do the suitcases any favours. We were met on board by the some of the crew and were offered drinks etc. Our first night in the dining room was not that great, service was even slower than on the Jade taking some 2 hours to get all courses. The actual Dining room/Lounge staff did not seem to gel together as well as the crew on the Jade. Again as on the Jade the portions coming out were not that great and one had to have all servings to feel reasonably full. Drinks at times were a problem to get either at the dining table or in the lounge area. We had been looking forward to eating at the Table La Rive, we had heard from some fellow passengers of their experience on the Jade and they spoke very well of their experience. However this was a complete opposite for us, there was only 4 other guests seated when we arrived. The butler who was dedicated to go through the serving was not as good as we had observed on the Jade. What ruined it for us was the other 2 couples who to be frank lacked the basic manners when eating with other people, one couple kept getting up and talking to some people they had met, and shouting from our table to them. The other couple were down right rude, complaining to the butler about their food and after asking the butler to change their dessert, simply got up and left without goodbye. When the butler returned we their desserts he asked where they had gone. He was not a happy bunny. So a lesson to be learnt here, we should have asked who we were going to be seated with before the night we had been booked to go to this venue. So sadly we had this ruined by other people! The cruise itself was well organised, as said previously on the Jade our tour director Andrea was excellent. Scenic did pull out all the stops to get us along the danube to Budapest which they accomplished. All the excursions a dn sites we experienced were very well mamagned. Final our disembarkation was the very best we have ever experienced again down to lot to Andrea, pity Oceania were not the same. Read Less

while I have no complaints regarding the staff and crew of the Jade,I do have serious complaints about the way we were treated by Scenic. There was no communication about the fact that the Jade did not make it to Budapest ,we had to phone despite Scenic having all our email addresses. On our first day we were bused to The Courtyard Marriott in Budapest,a third rate hotel with basically no facilities,a three star room, and a dreadful buffet meal with only one small glass of local beer allowed.Other passengers were accommodated in 5 star hotels which one would expect given the prices we paid. The next day included the 'guide tour of Budapest 'excursion. This was basically a bus tour for four hours , with the only highlight being a brilliant piano and organ recital. No water was offered despite it being 35 degrees C.We were then subjected to a 5 hour bus transfer to Vienna to join the Pearl, NOT the Jade that had been booked. Our room was the same number as the room booked on the Jade but was quite a lot smaller, and had a tiny shower, Certainly not what you could call luxurious. The balcony option may be a waste of money as many days we woke up to another ship moored alongside. After several days on the Danube we were bused again to join the Jade in Regensburg. We eventually got our luxury balcony suite that we had paid for. The rest of the cruise was good .It is less a luxury cruise, more like a luxury bus tour as every day involved trips on coaches, sometimes as long as four hours round trip.[The Sound of Music excursion] These ships are short on space, and long on numbers of passengers. There was never enough room in the lounge to sit unless someone went an hour ahead to reserve seats. You should be aware that it appears that Scenic market these tours extensively in Australia,so don't be surprised if you are cheek and jowl with over 120 large and loud Aussies!! Read Less

We chose this cruise after very careful scrutiny of itineraries, cabins and amenities. This was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, and had to be very special. We booked 51 weeks in advance to ensure we got what we wanted and what we paid for. We arrived in Budapest on August 20/18, got our bags, went through customs and finally found our private transfer to the ship. We were VERY disappointed to find that we were not going to the ship but to the Corinthia hotel. Australian and British passengers were advised in advance of the change caused by low water in the river. Canadians were not advised. Ships could not get past Vienna going up the river, or Regensburg coming down. The Jade was one of those stuck above Regensburg. J.J. the Cruise Director, met with the group of us who had been assigned to stay at the Corinthia. He promised that we would meet up with the Scenic Pearl in Vienna, and that our cabin would be equivalent to what we had booked on the Scenic Jade. He also told us that we would be transferred to the Jade at Regensburg, at some point, which meant we had to pack up and move partway through the cruise. At dinner that evening, at the Corinthia, I advised J.J. that I had a dairy allergy (the appropriate form had been filled out and submitted to Scenic in October 2017). He arranged for the maitre d' to help me with what I could eat on the buffet. However, when we were taken to a restaurant the next day for lunch, enroute to Vienna, he had not advised them and there was nothing I could eat safely. He became angry when I told him that and said it was not his job to worry about everyone's diet. He claimed he managed 7 ships and hundreds of guests and staff, and had no time to worry about everyone's diet. He blamed Scenic, the restaurant and me. His job was to take care of us on behalf of Scenic. My dietary restrictions were an issue for the entirety of the cruise. I was given the menus for the day each morning, once we reached the Jade. The dishes containing dairy were highlighted, but no alternates offered. The food on both ships was terrible. Very little choice, poorly executed and very little of it. We often had room service for dinner because it was faster, and tasted better than the dining room. On approximately the day 3 on the Jade, they stopped offering coffee/tea at lunch and dinner. For the most part, the crew with the exception of J.J., were wonderful. Our butlers: Kris & Gus (Pearl) and Harry (Jade) were very attentive. Harry especially would ensure my meals were dairy free and I was being taken care of, when he was in the dining room. Read Less

As a 40th anniversary trip. We made our own arrangements to get to Budapest and to return home from Amsterdam. We were told by Scenic UK to phone the Jade (which should have been our ship) to find her dock on the Monday. While out walking in Budapest on Sunday we saw the Scenic Jasper to ask if they knew where Jade was docking? The lady at reception looked bemused and said Jade is not due but made a phone call to check and said she was not due....she then asked for our name, then said we were due to board her ship Jasper the following day!! The ship had changed due to low water levels but we had not been notified. We complained via our travel agent about the lack of communication and eventually had a phone call from Scenic UK, the gist being that we had sorted ourselves out so what was the problem! Not exactly 5* customer service, especially as it cost us £14k+. Similar responses after the cruise...no real apology just excuses that HQ in Australia had the information but UK did not! Also our cabin was being changed so UK were waiting for detail....as far as I could tell, we had the same grade of cabin we had booked? They probably knew a week earlier of the ship change as that was probably the location where the ship change probably took place but they do not like to publish that!! We heard the return cruise from Amsterdam was likely to have 3 ship changes! Having said all that, we were on the Jasper for 1 week from Monday 23 July then met up with the Jade on Sunday 29 July. Both ships were excellent and the Cruise Director Cathy (Kathy) and the rest of the crew were all hardworking and friendly with great service. Ship change was so slick although all the suitcases had to be repacked and they were taken from our cabin and were waiting for us on the Jade!! We just went on our tour for the day and were taken back to the Jade! Excursions were well-organised and included more than usually described. Would happily recommend the cruise and ships but not the back-up organisation in UK, etc. Will not be using them again, life is too short! Read Less

We were disappointed in this cruise line. We did a river cruise in Europe with Scenic almost a year ago. We were in a 200 cabin (205, 207, 209?). The balcony was pretty useless; would have made more sense if they took out the doors and made it part of the room. If you happen to be on the balcony you could hear conversations from several rooms away. The excursions were mostly great. Their headsets were horrible and desperately needed to be upgraded. The worst part was the food. Trying to serve an entire, albeit small, ship at the same time in the evening is a bad idea. We sometimes had to wait 45 minutes to order, so we were served late. And the food portions were, as some of the Canadians said, quarter sized. No seconds, except dessert. We expected local food, but only got German sausage once. The staff was friendly and some overly so. I expect that was to receive extra tips (included in cruise price). They did work extremely hard. I heard some say the work they were doing was not what they signed up for; bait and switch? Read Less

Family heritage encouraged us to take this river cruise departing budapest hungary, sailing thru austria and ending in nuremberg germany. very nice land tours & ports. Awesome bed. great storage in room. bathroom needs hanging space. one small towel rack to hold 4 towels (layered on top of each other for esthetics) and after use where do you hang 4 towels? Needs hand towel rack as little bitty countertop has no room. our deluxe "balcony" was not really a balcony at all. balcony was actually a space completely part of the regular room that had 2 chairs beside the window. The exterior wall was all window but only the top half rolled down to open air; because this was a river cruise we were requested to use the screen covering if putting window down but, screen was a dark screen and couldn't see out of it so didn't use window opening; deluxe balcony was really a room about 1-1/2 ft wider with a very large window. oh - biggest problem: coming from usa needed us electrical plugs and there were none. fortunately we brought 1 converter but this took forever to charge a cellphone even with usb cord brought from home. there were no usb plugs either. We had 2 cellphones and a waterpik.... also, marketed as luxury cruise with butler for each room and we never saw our butler and bed turn down only happened about 50% of the time. note: of the 140 patrons on board, 54 were american, 60 canadian, rest were australian, china, chile. food, while elegantly presented, was not usa food, unusual offerings that seldom were appetizing as unusual foods (chef was from croatia), very tiny portions, (i'm a small female), no bread and there was no food bars etc. Available between breakfast, lunch of after dinner. one dinner seating which was usually 7-7:30 (varied day to day) which meant you left dinner around 9-9:30 and with no entertainment went to bed with full stomach. Scenic was recommended by friends and travel agents as the best. The ship was both attractive and clean, as well as our cabin. Dining was a pleasant experience with great service and many food selections. Appetizers and entres were attractively presented but as a taste experience were average. Desserts at the service centre along the highway had more visual appeal than anything presented onboard. Food could be view as average. Lounge entertainer David was excellent in his entertainment and most likeable and personable. Service was excellent. Excursions were greatly informative and enjoyable with the exception of Nuremburg. That was partly due to the black history of Nuremburg but largely due to an inexperienced and ineffective guide. This was a great way to explore Hungary, Austria, Germany and Czech Republic, countries we have not previously visited but not one we would repeat. Pleasantly upon return we both found that we lost weight on this cruise, rather than gain the 10 pounds that we were told we would...a testament to the mediocrity of the food! Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was advertised as 5 star, everything was 5 star except the food, which was awful. The standard of the food was unacceptable for a cruise of this quality - one and a half hour wait for the main course, inedible raw tough meat that had supposedly been cooked for 8 hours, half empty buffets, lemon meringue pie with the uncooked egg whites raw on top, to name but some of the problems. Dining in Portobello's and the Captains dinner was no better. The Captain's dinner starter being scallops, which turned out to be one scallop, which when cut into it was raw so not eaten , lobster came , looked good but was once small piece of lobster and the rest of the shell was filled with mushrooms in cheese sauce. The waiting staff were the ones who had to face the customer but the problem was not theirs - the kitchen just could not cope. Food is a very important feature in a holiday of this calibre and this was not up to standard. It was such a shame as all other aspects of the cruise were perfect -good cabins, trips, chauffeur to airport etc, but the kitchen let the rest of the ship down. Read Less

This was a 'special' Mary Berry Telegraph cruise which set off on 22 November 2017, not on the 17 November. We chose this cruise on the recommendation of our friends who are platinum Scenic travellers; they said that previously the food was always amazing and the excursions brilliant. The ship is lovely, as are the cabins; they are spacious and light and the cabin balconies are just wonderful. The staff are also superb, with one or two exceptions. However, some things were disappointing: Logistics: Approximately 100 of us arrived at the same time in Budapest airport. We were greeted by two reps and herded together in the arrivals area until everyone had been rounded up. We were then shown to our coaches for the transfer to the ship. There was no-one on the coaches to explain what was happening or to provide assistance. We suggest that people are shown to the bus in smaller groups so that they can sit in comfort whilst others arrive. It would also have been nice to have been provided with a bottle of water and a guide to tell us what was happening ie how long the transfer would be etc. Most of the passengers were pensioners and had been up since at least 0400, so a drink would have been welcome. We were offered lunch once we arrived on the ship, the lunch was fine. However, there were long delays waiting for the buffet to be replenished. On the return journey we had to leave suitcases outside our rooms at 0730 despite the fact that we weren't leaving the ship until 1045. That meant getting up very early. Excursions: Budapest City tour was fine. There just wasn't enough time in Budapest. Schonbrunn Palace was stunning. However, there was virtually no free time to look around independently or to peruse the Christmas market. The return coach was twelve minutes late collecting us - that just rubbed salt in the wound. We could easily have had more time at the palace if we had left the ship a little earlier. Spanish Riding School: The visit was in the afternoon which meant that it was impossible to see the horses rehearsing or performing. Cesky Krumlov: A fantastic day out! It snowed and we had a perfect amount of time to visit this amazing Unesco heritage town. Although the lunch was rather grim. Entertainment: Piano recital was wonderful - we hadn't realised that a virtuoso pianist could produce such astounding music. Orchestra/Ballet/Opera evening was perfectly pleasant. However, it would have been wonderful to have visited the real thing rather than these pale imitations. On-board entertainment was fine if you like thigh slapping, lederhosen dancers; jolly accordion players and traditional folk singers. On-board pianist was very good and provided some lovely background and dance music. Food: This was really disappointing. Remember our friends had 'sold' us the holiday on the basis of the fab food. Dinner in La Rive on our one permitted evening was very good. The rest of the food was OK, but nothing special. Mary Berry: was as lovely as you might expect; perfectly charming and very approachable. However, what ever made anyone think that a boat load of pensioners would want her latest book 'Household Tips & Tricks' in which Mary shares those little domestic secrets that she has gleaned over many years. Did it not cross anyone's mind that the passengers had all lived a long time and had probably gleaned most of the same tips and tricks. Mary Berry is a renowned cook. We were expecting a cookery book! And then there were the mince pies made with minced beef instead of mincemeat. How was the poor pastry chef to know that there is an important difference between mincemeat and minced meat. Our friends were embarrassed because we had booked the holiday on their recommendation and it didn't come up to standard - even the Cruise Director said more than once that this was not a typical Scenic cruise. We were sad for our friends because we really wanted the cruise to live up to their expectations too. Read Less

Despite this cruise being advertised by the Daily Telegraph, booking and payment were made to Scenic and as a platinum member we received all of the normal Scenic benefits, so naturally we expected everything to be as good as all of the other times that we have travelled with Scenic. The ship was beautifully presented in a modern style as usual; the majority of the staff were as efficient and helpful as usual; the included expertly guided tours to Budapest/ Melk Abbey and Cesky Krumlov were excellent as usual and the coaches were immaculate as usual BUT the food was way below the usual 5 star standard. As some friends had joined us on this cruise having listened to us rave about the fantastic food that was always served on board, this was particularly embarrassing. The degustation menu served on the invitation night at La Rive was very good but the experience was so much better when a round table was used because it was much easier for people to converse. The dinner served at Portobellos was average. The food on the lunch time buffet, apart from one or two dishes was also average. We had an alternative choice of steak a couple of times and it was perfectly cooked. The food did improve slightly on the last couple of days when the guest speaker, Mary Berry, joined the ship. Each cabin was given one copy of her latest book 'Household Tips and Tricks', which, considering that most of the people on board were over 60 was not perhaps the best choice. Her latest cookbook would have been more appropriate. She was very interesting and friendly and chatted with everyone and signed autographs, but when she had one of the chefs on board make 3 pastries as per her recipes, 2 of them were a disaster. There were also some timing issues with a couple of the excursions and the 'tailor made devices'. There were a fair number of people on this cruise that had never travelled with Scenic before and I heard a number of them say that they would have expected higher quality food on a ship that is at the top end of river cruising. If I hadn' t been on other Scenic cruises I would be unlikely to repeat the experience. Read Less

Unfortunately we have been spoiled by Silversea. Scenic promise a level of luxury equal to Silver Sea,it does not deliver. If I were able to count the hours ,aside from using the boat as a hotel,i would suggest we were on a bus more than on a cruise ship. River was low at Regensberg so we were bused to Nuremburg and then Praque which was not a fitting ending to a cruise where there was really only one day on the river cruising. When you then add the hours spent on the bus going on the tours etc ,most of our time over the 11 days was spent in a bus. Butler service was basically non existent after the first day, food was ok, double and triple docking of boats is a pain, looking into other peoples staterooms when you wake up in the morning is not what we paid for, going from Budapest to Prague, get a starboard room. A some points there were 4-5 boats jockeying for position, at the piers ,i thgink the whole Danube experience is being ruined And then we arrive home and find that Scenic is not even listed any longer in the top 10 Conde Nast River Cruises ,not surprised really, spent a lot of money for an overall average experience. Probably would not do it again Read Less

We chose this cruise as an introduction to the world of cruising. The actual onboard experience was great and the scenery when moving was wonderful. The ship, staff and food were exceptional. We wished we had booked longer and a larger cabin. The bathroom was amazing as was the bed but all just a bit cramped for us. However, the whole experience is very much created with the American tourist in mind. The tours we felt were compromised, all geared around meal times and not enough free time. The onboard entertainment was dated and again all American music. Disco night was so old American. Not all of us are in our 60's and we still listen to on trend sounds...and something more current would have been good. There were some school trip child like moments on the tours and I really objected to being pushed and shoved along the way. Having paid for a Balcony Suite I also felt cheated every time we moored alongside another vessel. This was particularly annoying on waking one morning to find passengers waving to me in bed as they enjoyed their breakfast! Disembarkation was tedious;on this occasion those not going onto Prague should have been taken of first and straight to the airport due to the weather conditions. It would also have been useful to know that there were toilets on the coaches... Read Less

We chose this cruise because Scenic had reputation for being very high end and truly all inclusive. It lived up to the all inclusive. The trip actually sailed on July 17, 2017. We were supposed to sail on the Jade but due to low water levels this ship was substituted. The ship was tired looking and needed a refresh. The carpet in our cabin was frayed and coming up. The gourmet food was anything but. It was spotty. The ladies public restroom was out of commission for 4 Days. This caused cruisers to go back to their cabin or a cabin on the Diamond deck. During the cruise more then half the ship came down with a respiratory ailment. Nothing was done to attempt to contain it. No one encouraged the use of hand sanitisers before entering dining room. Nor did they encourage the staff to handle the buffet in a manner to prevent those who were ill from touching silverware at the buffet. The itinerary was good and truly all inclusive. The tour director was fabulous. Thank staff worked very hard but it appeared there were not enough staff. Read Less
