We wanted to see Vienna and Salzburg as we had already visited Budapest a few years ago. We enjoyed the river cruise as there was always something to see on sailing days compared to a sea cruise. Having used Scenic before, we knew that the standards and the Enrichment activities would be special. Our private concert at the Palais Liechtenstein was a high light of the trip. Our service on board was excellent especially from Robert bringing our morning tea, and Alexander who gave use excellent service in the dining room as well as Denys and Filip . we did not really have much to do with our Butler Marian who arrived a day late. Robert was regarded as our Butler. Our guide to Salzburg Eva was very very enthusiastic and prepared a map and sheet for us, she really wanted us to enjoy the day. The Lunch at St. Peters was very disorganised and this needs to improve. A fantastic week and value for money . Read Less

Loved the cruise from start to finish, Scenic provides first class holidays, they have thought things through and for us there were only minor complaints, the cabins were spacious, the food we could not fault and the staff went over and above any expectations we had. The shore excursions were all local guides from the particular country that we happened to be in. The little extras like a butler, room service and laundry made our stay that bit more special. A couple of minor niggles, the staff were not sure of the policy for smoking e-cigarettes and we also had to sit separate on the flights. Would we Holiday with Scenic again? absolutely! and we will be booking again soon. The entertainments manager Richard also deserves a mention, he worked tirelessly from dawn til dusk ensuring everyone was aware of trip times, where to be etc... plus he was quite witty and amusing, a man in the right job in our opinion. My husband and I went on the Scenic Jade Budapest to Prague River cruise to celebrate our 30th anniversary in June, 2017. The entire trip exceeded our expectations. From the airport pickup to the transfer to the Prague airport, everything was handled wonderfully. We had a deluxe Balcony suite on the diamond floor and the room was beautiful with plenty of space. The balcony was especially nice on the nights the boat was cruising. We were treated to a full moon these nights….very romantic. The food was very good and they accommodated my husband’s dietary restrictions. There were lots of choices of excursions. My husband is gluten free and everyday a menu would be in our room indicating which item he could eat. This was our first cruise and would definitely go on another one, especially with Scenic. I would highly recommend Scenic and this trip to anyone. Loved it!!!! Read Less

So much was great about this cruise. It was chosen for its route, the Danube, the rating of the ship on Cruise Critic and the facility to fly from Newcastle airport. It lived up to expectations in everything but the food. In general that was great apart from the meat which I found often to be on the tough side. Apart from that the service, trips and company were excellent The embarkation was smooth. The ship was well equipped although without a swimming pool. There was only one public room, apart from the dining room, where entertainment also took place but this allowed us to get to know more people than on an ocean cruise. The cabin, the lowest grade, was well equipped if on the neat side, particularly the bathroom, but all we need as we were only in it to sleep. Service was top notch with every cabin having access to a butler if needed. The food in general was excellent with a good choice a breakfast and lunch which were buffet style. Evening was waiter service. My only complaint was that the meat was sometimes a bit tough. At every port we visited there was an excellent guided tour and free time to wander around . They provide a device which enabled us to listen to the guide but also, when on our own to be directed to high points we chose and given information about that location. Read Less

All destinations on this cruise were places I had wished to visit for many years. Starting at Budapest, I was greatly impressed by the historic sights, in particular the Old City, much enhanced by a wonderfully knowledgeable guide. I was also amazed to see how clean and litter free this area was. The concert at the Blind Institute, with piano and organ recital of Liszt and bach was truly memorable. Our stay in Vienna, with our visit to the Schonbrunn Palace, and evening concert at the Arsenal was indeed a musical treat. The small orchestra delighted us with a varied program of Srauss, Mozart and Beethoven, followed by a wonderful operatic recital by Paul Potts. Again an interesting program of popular songs from the Musicals and some fantastic renderings of familiar arias. The Q & A with Paul next day was very informative. Salzburg, with its Mozart and Sound of Music reputation did not disappoint, with its beautiful historic landmarks and gardens. Our lunch in the 8th century restaurant was indeed a memorable one, full of character and charm Melk provided a stunning visit to its Abbey with all the history and opulence of a bygone age. I was not so taken with our visit to Aggstein Castle as the view promised was not quite as stunning as I had imagined. Weltenburg Abbey was simply marvelous with the added treat of sampling the lovely beer made by the Monks there. What followed, was a stunningly scenic boat trip through the Danube Gorge to Kelheim. Unbelievably we were to finish this fantastic cruise on a real high with a visit to Nuremburg, which exceeded all my expectations. What a wonderful old city it proved to be on every level, with its history and its lovely central square. Read Less

We've been on a number of ocean/sea cruises in recent years, but our week on the Danube between Budapest and Nuremberg was our first river cruise. It was a fantastic holiday in every way. I can't speak too highly of the comfort and cleanliness of the ship in general and our cabin in particular, the tremendous food at breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the quality of service from every member of the crew we encountered - whether they were bar and restaurant staff, cabin staff or receptionists. The cruise director was probably the best we've ever come across, extremely efficient with an engaging personality and great sense of humour. The hotel manager, too, always had time for a joke and a chat. The various excursions were all well organised and packed full of interest, with exceptionally pleasant and knowledgeable guides; user-friendly tailor-made audio devices were provided that could be used both on the tours and when cruising on the river. All in all, excellent value for money - we certainly hope to have another holiday with Scenic in the near future. Read Less

We chose Scenic for the reduced airfare, bike riding that was available and the all inclusive beverages and tipping. We had traveled with other river cruise companies that did not offer these perks. Scenic Ruby had a great staff who provided great service. The food was delicious and well-presented. The tours and entertainment were informative and excellent. Unfortunately there was only one bike tour that was 22 miles long and there was little opportunity to bike at other times. My only criticisms would be that there was a smoking area on the sundeck near the front of the ship. This meant that everyone in the upper deck lounge seating was exposed to the smoke since it naturally would drift to the non-smoking area. One evening there were two men smoking cigars so we were forced to leave. We took the Prague extension which was very interesting. The Marriott hotel was lovely and the guide was great. We would definitely travel with Scenic again especially if they would put the smokers at the rear of the ship. Read Less

Our first riverboat cruise and we chose Scenic due to prior reviews, and the all inclusive feature. We booked a suite on the Diamond Deck and were not disappointed. The entire staff went out of their way to be friendly, helpful and full-service. We constantly saw the staff members switching roles and assisting in various duties, whether it was housekeeping, waiting on tables, or helping serve drinks. The excursions were outstanding, with many choices. The food, drinks and dining service was exception as was the on board entertainment. Accommodations were wonderful, with a "pillow menu" to enhance my sleeping comfort. We hosted a small gathering in the suite one evening and "Milan" rearranged the furniture, brought appetizers, and chilled wine and champagne for the occasion. Kurt, the cruise director was the ultimate host, friendly and accommodating in every way. He even did some singing and dancing. His attention to detail and his patience was superb. I will be back to Scenic as it was a first class operation! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was visiting several places which we had always wanted to visit but had never gone round to. It more than exceeded all of our expectations. We have been on several ocean cruises but this was our first river cruise and it certainly will not be our last one. Having been given a book on board advertising river cruises we will certainly be looking for our next cruise. The crew were so obliging, nothing was to much bother. I celebrated my birthday while on board and was made to feel very special with a lovely meal in the Portabello restaurant finished off with a lovely cake The trips were all excellent and the tour guides were very knowledgeable. It was amazing to have our own butler as well as a cabin attendant. The ship itself was beautifully clean and inviting and the food was excellent Read Less

My wife and I cruised from Amsterdam to Budapest in August of 2014 and decided to go the opposite direction this year and to visit Prague. We have cruised Viking, Silver Seas, Crystal, and Princess in the last three years. We chose Scenic because their bathrooms had bath tubs, a must so my wife could deal with the pain in her legs after a day of touring. And because they were supposed to be a luxury cruise line. The cruise was as memorable as we had remembered and we will continue to recommend it to our friends, just not on Scenic. Scenic chose the hotel in Prague and it was very nice. The staff and tour guides were all friendly and courteous with the guides being generally knowledgeable. Everything was all inclusive; laundry, drinks, tips, etc., this is a very nice way to cruise and the quality of the wine was top notch. Unfortunately, the food on the Scenic Amber was the worst of all our cruises so far. There were some highlights but there were some downright bad entries as well. The rest of the food was only so so. Also, most of the meals were served buffet style, not what we experienced from the other cruise lines. In our opinion, this put Scenic out of the Luxury category. Two major warnings about the Scenic Amber – 1, Do not get a cabin close to the rear of the ship!! We were the third cabin in from the lobby and the noise and vibrations from the engines was minimal, not disturbing at all. But I walked back to the rear cabins late on a couple of evenings and the noise and vibration on both the 2nd and 3rd levels were very disturbing. Since we cruised every evening, this would have made the trip miserable. 2, Very poor food allergy support and quality – I am allergic to gluten. The quality of the gluten free food provided was much poorer than any of our past cruses. Most meals were buffet style and none of the food was marked as to what allergens were in them. And often the people supporting the buffet did not know what foods had allergens. The dinner menu did have allergens marked but even one of the dinner meals was served buffet style. The food was worse than any of our previous cruise. My wife does not have any food allergies and found that the food was not anywhere close to the quality of our previous cruses. Specifically, the pastries were very hard and not very good. Many of the soups were bland and lukewarm. I had a hamburger that was a preprocessed patty that had the life cooked out of it. One of the toughest burgers I ever had. Breakfast, lunch, and even one dinner was served buffet style. We like to have a consistent alternative menu to fall back on when we don’t like the main course. But we were not told that there was an alternative menu until the sixth day of cruising. Unfortunately, this menu included the burger. We also like to know the menu for dinner in advance but did not find out it was on the TV until the 10th day of cruising. It still was frustrating because the menu scrolled by and you could not stop it to read the entries. We would much rather have had a paper copy. In the main dining room the tables along the windows were difficult to get to. This was because the tables in the next row out were so close together that it was difficult to squeeze between the chairs when people were sitting in them. Often it was difficult to get servers to refill drinks like coffee, water, or wine. There was a lack of attention to detail that we had not experienced on our other cruises. Probably the biggest was we did not receive a binder with full instructions and room service menu until the 7th day of cruising. Scenic provided a beautiful map of the rivers and cities we were going through but not until the 7th day of cruising. The bow camera was always out of focus, a real bummer. The weather provided on the closed-circuit system often did not include the cities we were sailing to. The map showing your location did not show country boundaries and did not provide a zoomed in view. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise because we had seen the Rhine from Amsterdam to Mainz and we wanted to go further east. The river cruise offered by SCENIC fit out timetable and from Budapest back to Nuremberg fit with our desired geography. We priced various cruise lines and while SCENIC was not the least expensive, the 100% all inclusive and the description of the off ship excursions and on ship amenities just made the idea sound more convenient and fun. Boy, were we correct! Never have we felt more pampered. The staff, like the cruise director Andrian ( who could also have a second career in stand up comedy ) Kristian ( in the bar and the dining room ) ... well... actually, all the staff, were attentive, fast efficient and genuinely appeared to love their jobs. They made us feel so welcome and important. You can, other than the odd coin you may need for WCs when off ship, lock your purse or wallet away. Everything is top notch, top quality and included. Even the bus service used for off ship excursions was top notch and the local guides were fantastic. We began in Budapest, wandered down the Danube past Vienna and ended in Nuremberg where so continued to Prague and some ( including us ) sadly flew home. We were offered a plethora of choices for off ship excursions and I would have to write a short novel to outline them all. Check with Scenic for their itinerary. Every choice was great and, there were sufficient options that you could actually do the trip more than once. It is not often that I can find no fault whatsoever. This time I can. I highly recommend you take SCENIC cruise lines into consideration for your trip. ( And no, I don't work for them or have shares. ) We were extremely impressed. Read Less

1st time river cruising, and the experience was wonderful! Scenic goes above and beyond to ensure everything is first rate. When they say its all-inclusive, they are not kidding. The enrich tours were well organized and provided terrific value. The local guides were all excellent - friendly and knowledgeable. An added feature were the 'tailormade' devices which allowed you to hear the guides easily, or to explore on your own. Our cabin (deluxe balcony) was well laid out and kept spotless by Viktor. While we didn't really make use of our butler, Goran was always around and available. Food and drink on board were of high quality. Service at peak times was sometimes a little slow, but all staff on board were very friendly and efficient. Cruise Director Adrian was very visible and worked hard to ensure all needs were met. We selected this particular cruise because of the itinerary. Highlights for us included: the night sail through Budapest; the city tour of Budapest (including a fabulous piano concert); the private concert in Vienna; Durnstein; and watching the sights as we cruised along the Danube. We really have no negatives to report, and we will return again. I would recommend Scenic to anyone! Read Less

We explored the embarkation port before we sailed. Embarkation and disembarkation both very smooth. Cabin smaller than expected but very well appointed. Staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. The choice of excursions was excellent Although we had visited Budapest and Vienna before we still found new and interesting places to visit. e.g. the hospital in the caves in Budapest. Amsterdam however had nothing new to offer. As we travelled through Austria and Bavaria besides historic towns we enjoyed the charming villages on our excursions. We sampled every kind of sausage and beer in Austria and visited every Christmas shop. We may need to have two Christmas trees this year. Perhaps the highlight was the champagne reception and orchestral evening in Vienna - wonderful music singing and ballet in splendid surroundings. We would travel with Scenic in the future and will certainly recommend the company to family and friends. Read Less

We chose Scenic for this holiday on the recommendation of friends and comments on the reviews. We were not disappointed. The Scenic package we picked up from our travel agent was so well organized it was a sign of what was to come - the flights, transfers, hotel accommodation and cruise all flowed smoothly. The organization and service by staff - cabin, butler, bar, dining and ship was always friendly and attentive. The food was excellent- the quality and variety at each meal made choices difficult. It was nice to have all beverages and alcohol included, a glass of wine while cruising the river in the afternoon, a drink before dinner etc. The organization of cabins in the small space was most efficient. Tours were interesting and informative - the Taylormade system made it easy to listen to the information being presented by the guide or know what you were seeing as you sailed the rivers. The local guides were excellent, very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the sites they were sharing with us. The local wines, menu items, and entertainment reflective of the area added to the regional flavour. The enrichment activities- Vienna concert, Sounds of Music concert, Oktoberfest, castle dinner, were all very special and memorable events. All combined to make this a most enjoyable holiday. As everything was included in the trip price before leaving home, the only other money spent was on local specialty coffees on our free time or souvenirs to bring home. I definitely recommend Scenic for the all inclusive value and experience and look forward to another cruise with them. Read Less

The cabin was up to the usual high standard as was food on offer in both eating places. The entertainment was of a high standard as were the onshore excursions.Particularly the concert in Vienna and the onboard entertainment ie string quartet, violinist, and zither player. We chose this cruise because of the rave reviews of Scenic, because it is all inclusive and because of the itinerary, Gems of the Danube. We were picked up at the airport in a lovely Mercedes and our driver delivered us to the ship quickly. Embarkation was simple and seamless in Budapest, though we waited several hours in the lounge for our cabins to be prepared. Drinks and snacks were offered in the meantime. The crew was welcoming and friendly. Our cabin was great and we met our butler immediately though I have to say that was one of the very few times we saw him. This was disappointing as we were expecting a little pampering. The food is ample and good though rarely outstanding. The wines are not as high quality as we expected though we discovered quickly that better wines were available upon request. The tours were well planned and made for little idle time. You will walk quite a bit on this cruise so be prepared. The signature Tailormade system is very effective, easy to hear the guides (I used my own earbuds though) but it is a bit heavy and bulky to carry around one's neck. We participated in almost every tour day, save one, and did the Prague extension as well. The onboard entertainment is okay--the pianist who is the onboard musician is very skilled and enjoyable and some of the local performers were good. We loved the Vienna special performance--truly professional musicians, dancers, vocalists. Suggestions: if you arrive mid-day on embarkation, have the ship's crew arrange a tour for you to the Hospital in the Rock or shopping district so that your frustration at waiting will be alleviated. There is much to see in Budapest but we had limited time before sailing the next day. It would have been nice to have more time in each port. All in all, it was an enjoyable cruise. Read Less

Embarkation and disembarkation on the Scenic Jade was a breeze...and all too easy and very organised. The ship is luxuriously appointed and my cabin was everything I had expected... my butler, the lovely Hotel Manager Alex, looked after me attentively during the cruise (as I was travelling solo) and went above and beyond on a couple of occasions organising something special for me...We started off our river cruise with a day exploring Budapest and some of this city's little gems...back on the ship the food offered to us over the 8 days was always delicious and 2 of those nights (over the course of the cruise) each guest was invited to a private dining table experience and a dinner at their Portobello Italian restaurant...there was always plenty to eat and drink as it was 'all inclusive'...as for the entertainment, you could either participate in whatever live entertainment was on offer (some of my friends did hilarious Lederhosen dancing one night ...!!) or if you wanted something quieter you could go outside to the open front area or the rooftop deck for a more intimate atmosphere. Our Cruise Director Frank had us all organised, making sure we where all where we were supposed to be...the onshore excursions were all really interesting and conducted by knowledgeable guides... the ones I had were also very entertaining..!! The service on the ship was impeccable and I would like to thank ALEX, Frank, Ivan, Dodi, Almir, Borys and Ozan who all looked after me in one way or another and made for a hugely fun trip...would do it again in a heartbeat..!! xo Read Less

We had traveled with Scenic on the Rhine and this trip was equally entertaining. The tours were generally good, although the Salsburg visit was too much walking and too much emphasis on Sound of Music! All transportation with Scenic buses worked very well. The coaches were clean and comfortable. Dining was a pleasure both in the main dining room, the River Cafe and Portabellas. Sonia, the tour director was amazing. Lots of information, talented and funny! The taylor made listening device was helpful when it worked. I heard so many glowing reports of scenic, I had high expectations...they were exceeded. There were four of us (2 couples) travelling together We were on Scenic Opal on the Jewel deck, down at water level. It was fabulous, plenty of space, eye level window, great view of the scenery, but we spent most of our time in the lounge or the front deck or on the top deck, even if we had a balcony cabin we would have been up in the lounge etc so that you can see BOTH sides of the river. The food was wonderful, my friend has many dietary needs was so well looked after she was thrilled. Our cruise director Richard Grey was BRILLIANT the entertainment on board, the excursions, guides and staff were second to none. Budapest to Amsterdam was the BEST way to go. Loved it. Well done SCENIC I marked Embarkation down one point because: One thing could be improved is information on arrival. In the 'Welcome' book it stated we were to transfer to the ship from the front of our hotel at 11am and it also stated 'Embarkation at the ship starts no earlier than 3pm" This caused some confusion. Guessing we would be at the ship by 11:30, were we to stand around for 3 and a half hours before getting on? did we drop our luggage there and go sightseeing for a couple of hours? No it all went very smoothly the coach picked us up, took us along the river to the ship, we went on board to a lovely welcome with snacks and drinks available immediately, while we waited to be shown to our rooms, so maybe the written word of the 'Welcome' could be changed to show that you go to the lounge whilst waiting. My party and I had 2 days in Budapest before we boarded the ship and added 2 days in Amsterdam at the end of our cruise on the advice of friends who had taken the same cruise. Great suggestion! Embarking and disembarking were both well organized and quick! The Opal is an amazing ship, spotless and well planned out. Dining room, food and staff were exceptional. Chef Norm is a master with food. Our choices each night were hard to choose between. If you tire of the buffet you can choose off the menu anytime. It is not always a buffet if you choose not to. The service from everyone is above and beyond. Entertainment was wonderful, each night Antonio the piano/guitar/singer played songs from all eras. All had such a great time and a lot of dancing ensued most nights. The cruise director Richard Grey brought outside entertainment on ship some nights which had everyone on awe. I cannot say enough about the service from all employees on the Opal, if you needed something, they went above and beyond to get it for you. Nothing was too big or too small, and always with a smile. Ports and shore excursions, I enjoyed all as I am interested in history, however, if you are not up to it or not interested in a certain excursion you can stay on the ship and relax. Your choice! Now for my last yahoo! Our cruise director Richard Grey was the most extraordinary person. He made our cruising so seamless, all excursions on time and fun. If you needed info on anything he would get it for you. Always there with a smile and hello, he remembers many names of passengers, information on the cities we visit, the port talks, and even dressed up a couple of nights (oh, I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there) he was hilarious! One last item, the trip may cost a bit more than another cruise line, however, ALL tips, excursions, food and alcohol are included in your price upfront. No bill at the end of the trip unless you use the hairdresser or masseuse. We had private functions for Opal passengers only, which would be an added cost on another cruise line, but not for Scenic passengers! Amazing trip and amazing people. As you can see, I totally enjoyed my trip and would certainly go again on another trip and different route. I highly recommend Scenic Cruise lines! Debra N Read Less

Staff really look after their guests. Dining was usually good, although we felt too cramped in the Crystal dining room. Portobello's was very good for service and food. Our royal suite was very nicely furnished and quite roomy for a relaxing stay. The included laundry service was very well received for a long stay in Europe. We did not really participate to see the on board entertainment, but saw some dancers, a few times. Shore excursions were well organized and could have as many as 30 to 40 people. We prefer smaller groups, eventhough everyone had ear phones to listen to the tour guide. We have booked another river cruise for 2018, also on Scenic and will explore the Bordeaux region. Read Less

A river boat cruise had been high on our list of vacations for many years. We finally decided to do it while we are still in good health and able to negotiate the villages and castles. We decided on Scenic after attending an information session. We appreciated the fact that everything was included, we did not have to think about who and how much to tip or if we could have another glass of wine. Everything went very smoothly, even the weather cooperated. Our cabin was small but adequate with lots of storage. The service throughout the ship was excellent, we enjoyed the food at every meal, there was lots of variety. The excursions were amazing, especially the private concert at the palace in Vienna. The cruise director (Sonja) was excellent, everyone enjoyed her "characters" and her joke of the day after the daily port talk. We hope to be able to travel with Scenic again - perhaps South East Asia!!! Read Less

We've river-cruised before but have never been on the Danube or to Budapest, Vienna and Prague. This itinerary seemed to fit all requirements and the cruise company was highly recommended. Excellent marks for the staff and service; the land tours were spot on and the local tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable; the dining arrangements and food were very good with an excellent chef and staff - all very warm, welcoming and friendly, meeting customers, not out-of-site. Highlights of the itinerary for me were Salzburg and the 3-day extension in Prague - extra days would have been even better. For such a supposedly top-quality all-inclusive company, the range and quality of wines was quite disappointing. I realise Scenic try to incorporate local food and wines but this area is not known for top wines (apart form a few German ones) and being an Australian company situated in Europe with many US and UK customers, I expected more wine choices from Australia, France, NZ or USA. After several days I found out there were some other options available (also limited and not top quality) but this was not widely communicated; it seemed they were being kept secret. We had paid for a top-deck deluxe suite but the Scenic practice of mooring alongside their sister ship (Pearl) meant that we could not use our balcony because there was a bedroom of the Pearl very adjacent. We also had to keep the curtains closed whilst using the cabin which was not acceptable for this standard of cruising. I may consider travelling with Scenic again but I will not take another river cruise with them. I need better views from my balcony - and much better wines at this price! Read Less

I did a full assessment of all the river cruises and Scenic, although amongst the most expensive came out as good value for money as an all-inclusive cruise. Eveything was included. The ship was superb, however the journey there was not at all good. We were supposed to fly from Bristol to Budapest via Brussels. However, our flight was cancelled on the tarmac, we were transferred to Heathrow via taxi, then had more delayed flights after that, arriving in Budapest at 2230 rather than 1120 originally. The meals are superb and the butler service for morning tea was great. Meals to mention are the Tasting menu, which complemented seve courses to five wines, and the exclusive la Rive meal. The highlight was the exclusive concert at Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna. The music was out of this world and the setting magnificent. Other excursions were to Salzburg, and Melk Abbey. The guides were excellent and the hand held guides worked well. Although we were early in the season all the staff were extremely well trained to a high standard. The fellow passengers were a mixed crowd from UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, and we had a great time. We even had a Grand National sweepstake and my horse came third! The shore excursions were all excellent with the personal guide being very good. Would I go again? Definitely Read Less
