Water levels were low so we ‘swapped’ ships twice. Started on Scenic Pearl, then Scenic Opal then Scenic Amber. Opal and Amber were newer ships so larger rooms. Service was excellent. Food great. Tours organized very well and cruise director Andreea was amazing. The swaps were handled very well and pretty painlessly for us, with the exception we had to pack up twice but all luggage was handl d by the crew and in our rooms when we reached the new ship. Weather for October was well above normal so we were able to st on the top deck as we crises te rivers. Rm 234 at te back of the ship was very noisy on the Pearl but not so on the newer Opal ad Amber. Etertanmet rought on board was ver good. String quartet delightful. Would have enjiyed ports more had we been able to dock closer to town centres but low water levels found us needing to shuttle into centre of towns. Would definitely travel wt Scenic again. Read Less

Cruise director and crew did everything they could to make our trip enjoyable. Disappointed that we were not able to sail on the more expensive and newer Jade do to problems with low water levels in the Danube. Sailed on an older boat the Pearl and halfway through the trip bused to a second vessel further up river. Not a big issue as this was the day we were already taking a day-long trip to Salzberg. Just meant we had to pack and unpack again, missed a section of the river and the bus trip was a bit longer. I heard that others on other cruises at this time were cancelled or people ended up busing instead, so I counted ourselves lucky. The cabins were small but comfortable. Enjoyed the local folk entertainment on board. There was a reasonable variety for dinner although the breakfast and lunch offerings somewhat repetitive. The shore excursions were included and typically a couple of different options. All the guides were extremely knowledgeable Loved the using their e-bikes and our stops at smaller communities along the way. Would have been nice to have yoga or other onboard fitness activities. Added on a pre-cruise stay in Prague and post-cruise stay in Budapest. The accommodations and guided walk organized by Scenic were great. Would recommend having this full experience. So yes there were very big problems due to water levels in the river but I believe Scenic worked hard to make to work. Read Less

ship very modern well designed . cabin very adequate dining very good great not to have to handle money for drinks etc .on board entertainment scenic does it well good artists and varied performances to give a spectrum of the cultures in those countries visited .ports and excursions liked the special concerts for scenic passengers only .service brilliant the staff have a sense of humor . did not travel with children would i go again ..yes but different trip. onboard entertainment i think the pianist was very talented but played too loudly it discouraged me from sitting in the lounge when he was playing as it was hard to hear others talk. he could cut the volume by half and still the guests would appreciate his music . i found the top deck a good place to just walk and get exercise . the electric bikes were a highlight for me to get off the ship and really explore the local towns . the ship doesnt seem to be able to service the bikes much if they have minor faults they only get serviced in amsterdam .it was the first time i really ahd a chance to test out el;ectric bikes . Our travel agent recommended this cruise. Scenic does not promote their cruises well in North America. Most of the passengers were Australians who were very friendly and fun. We had a a junior suite. Nice sized room and very coveniently located to the ships amenities. We are non-smokers and our cabin was located just above the smoking section above the main doors. We could not use our balcony most of the time. They need to relocate the smoking section elsewhere on the ship. The wine offered with meals was either white or red. Wines offered were mediocre however there were some other better choices on the menu. The crew and servers were outstanding. The excursions were well organized and on time time. The excursions were outstanding and fun. First class all the way. The food in the Portabello's restaurant was excellent. The food was typical cruise cuisine. Good variety. We thought that the meat proteins were marginal at the lunch buffet. Our room was clean and very comfortable. One passenger passed the flu bug on to most of the passengers. The cruise industry needs to do a better job quarantining sick passengers. It was a great cruise even though most of the passengers were sick near the end of the cruise. The cruise director was outstanding. This was one of the best cruises ever for us. The Rhine Gorge was spectacular. We would highly recommend this cruise. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, following a couple of ocean cruises. Basically the cruise is 14 'city' tours with some short interludes on board to refresh yourself. Scenic ensured we were met at the airport and quickly moved to the ship, six of us shared a posh mini bus. Suitcases were again quickly moved into the cabin and we could star the holiday straight away following a bite to eat and straight into Amsterdam. The itinerary had very few disappointments The ones that stood out were the lack of organisation in Cologne when it was raining heavily, standing around waiting for the guides to get sorted. The other disappointment was the sundowner after Melk. The only alcohol on offer was a litre of white wine, no red nor no beer. The entertainers tried their best and it was a reasonably good sing along. The food was ok but was quickly attracting both flies and wasps. However the rest of the experiences were really enjoyable, as long as you are happy to join in. At least with a passenger list of about 150 everyone seemed at least to recognise their fellow passengers. Cabin was kept clean, quite small but functional, didn't spend a great deal of time in there anyway. Food good but not exceptional, some passengers felt the need to order double portions on occasions although you could have a 5 course meal every night should you choose. Staff tried hard but particularly on an evening waiter service for drinks could be slow. No lighting on the top deck became a bit of an issue as we liked to sit out after dinner and enjoy the evening and watching the sunsets. Overall a very enjoyable trip. Good to mix with Aussies, Canadians and Americans, Brits a definite minority here. Read Less

Carried out extensive research on the Amsterdam to Budapest river cruise with all the major companies and Scenic came out ahead for our requirements. We opted for one of the Royal Balcony Suites and were not disappointed, the extra lounge area was lovely to sit by the lower-able window and watch the world go by with a glass of champagne. The itinerary was well organised with various options to most tours along the way. If you did not wish to go on a tour you simply stayed on the ship. The organisation of the tours was superb and catered for the different walking/fitness abilities of the passengers. There were so many highlights that I cannot begin to tell them all but sitting on the upper deck on the Rhine River watching all the Castles, Church's and towns come into view was amazing. The catering was very good considering the limited size of the kitchen and regional wines were served along the way. All the staff are very eager to please you and do so with a big smile. If I go on another River Cruise I would have no hesitation to choose Scenic. Read Less

Had always wanted to do a European river cruise. Daughter's travel agent recommended this cruise company. They are certainly well organized and deliver a good experience. On the positive side: - Staff are attentive and work hard to serve. - The cruise director (Sylvie Magyar) was excellent. Very well organized. A real pro. - Facilities by and large are first class. - Tours, entertainment and events are sophisticated. - Having daily news for the countries represented was great. - Having dedicated buses following the latter part of the tour was great. On the negative side: - Very disappointed that evening meals for the most part were international without a local cuisine. When that was presented, the guests overwhelmingly chose that 135 of 151. - Some (not all) senior staff were unwilling/unable to deal with errors that the company made. One involved cabin safety and the other over-charging. Neither was adequatley addressed. - Rules are inflexible. Read Less

A river boat cruise had been high on our list of vacations for many years. We finally decided to do it while we are still in good health and able to negotiate the villages and castles. We decided on Scenic after attending an information session. We appreciated the fact that everything was included, we did not have to think about who and how much to tip or if we could have another glass of wine. Everything went very smoothly, even the weather cooperated. Our cabin was small but adequate with lots of storage. The service throughout the ship was excellent, we enjoyed the food at every meal, there was lots of variety. The excursions were amazing, especially the private concert at the palace in Vienna. The cruise director (Sonja) was excellent, everyone enjoyed her "characters" and her joke of the day after the daily port talk. We hope to be able to travel with Scenic again - perhaps South East Asia!!! Read Less

First of all you need to understand that with Scenic there are no additional costs and NO Tipping! You pay up front for everything so there are no surprise bar bills or extra excursion costs. Our trip was outstanding! There was nothing to complain about on this wonderful trip. This was their first trip of the season (early April) so the weather was somewhat cool and rainy but it never prevented us from having an amazing time. Scenic is an Australian company and many of the other passengers were Australian. They are always a happy outgoing bunch who are a pleasure to travel with. We were treated like royalty from the moment we were so efficiently checked in until they carried our even heavier luggage (there's lots of opportunity for shopping) off the ship. . The tours: We are seniors and found the pace just perfect. Buses were lined up and ready to drive us to whatever excursion we chose if the distance was longer than we cared to walk. Some were off ship meals, like in a resort on the mountain overlooking Salzburg or in Wurtzburg where we celebrated an early Octoberfest with jolly Bavarian musicians, beer and sausage. Another outing was a fabulous symphony concert evening in Vienna's Liechtenstein palace. Each of us were given a gps to use on excursions. It also functioned as a personal head phone to enable us to hear the tour guides who accompanied us on our tours. A brilliant invention for those of us with hearing issues. The lounge: The second level had the bar and really comfy chairs and couches. Here we watched guest musicians and dancers while we sipped our drinks or read our books as we watched the scenery go by or listened to Voytek, the ship musician belt out our favourite songs. The bar offered any and every alcoholic (or non alcoholic) drink that you could imagine from the best scotch to Bailey's. There was also a section in the lounge offering light meals if you didn't feel like going down for the buffet at breakfast or lunch. One of the best times was the night we all, staff included, danced to the oldies. It was obvious that the staff had been hand-picked for their positions and because the passengers number less than 200 you got to know them well. The Dining room and the meals: Excellent food and the best of wines each day. So often at all inclusive buffets after a few days, the food starts to look and taste the same. This was not the case here. Dinner was always a la carte. Chef Budi was very knowledgable and creative. He gave us a tour of his kitchen and a special cooking lesson one day. All meals were made fresh and produce was purchased locally. The soups were "to die for". I came home with a few new recipes to try myself. The wait staff was exceptional. Our favourite was the youngest, Victor. He treated us like royalty. We ladies all wanted to take him home. Our bubbly cruise director Sonja had unlimited energy. She would flit around sometimes between the different day tours checking on us and shopping for prizes for her contests. She even set up an egg hunt for us on Easter morning. She always ended her port talk with some hilarious joke and has the perfect personality for the job. I'm ready to take another River cruise anytime. This is the best way to see Europe and it will be with Scenic all the way! Read Less

My husband, parents and I cruised with Scenic down the Rhine river from Amsterdam to Basil. From the every first day everything was organized and top shelf quality. The ship has about 160 passengers and is designed extremely well. The cabins were spacious and comfortable as were the common areas. The excursions were enjoyable and there was time for relaxation as well. They had daily options for excursions and additional private excursions which were amazing including a private concert at the Mannheim palace. The food was fantastic whether you were eating at the buffet or one of the special dinners. And as wonderful as all that was, the crew made the cruise super special. They were friendly and professional making you feel welcome and safe from the very start. By the time the cruise was over the passengers and crew were one big happy family. I would and will travel with this company again. Read Less

It has now been about 4 weeks since we arrived back home after our wonderful cruise on the Scenic Pearl from Basil to Amsterdam, starting with an overnight stay at the luxurious Hotel Schweizerhof in Zurich. It all seems like a dream now, but we have never been so spoilt, or fed so much wonderful food, or seen so many incredible places that we would not otherwise have seen, as we were on our Scenic cruise. Marian kept our cabin absolutely spotless, and we loved seeing the little figures made from towels on the bed each day. Haris our butler was charming, and although we didn't use his services as much as we could have, we really enjoyed our early morning cup of tea in our cabin, along with his cheery morning greetings, each day. Frank Riapos is a great cruise director, he was always friendly, approachable, and helpful, and kept everything running smoothly, even when plans needed to be changed through no fault of his own. He really goes "the second mile". It was a special time for us as we had been travelling throughout England for some weeks previously, watching our budget very carefully, so it was great to finally board the ship, knowing we wouldn't need to worry about finances, or finding our way around, as everything was taken care of in the initial price. It really was a wonderful way to finish our "holiday of a lifetime" and left us feeling that if circumstances permitted we would love to travel with Scenic again, to explore another part o the world. Thank you Scenic for a truly wonderful experience that will stay in our memories and our hearts forever. Read Less

This was the only cruise that had a excursion to Speyer Tecknic museum which was one of our must do's to the travel agent .It was a combination celebration for us for a birthday and wed anniversary , unfortunately we didn't get to see anything of Basel our departure point as we were bussed from Zurich to the ship. impressed with our welcome aboard , glass of champagne and our room with a balcony . Embarking went smoothly and the meals on board were first class. Our Cabin was awesome , Dining a true 5 star experience . Entertainment was good , but not to the same level as the service and dining standard. Service was impeccable from bar, dining and room service . Port and shore excursions were fabulous, we had one disappointment we missed the first port stop due to our ship missing its lock time , which was pretty disappointing for all on the ship. Our ship age group varied from 50 to 80yr olds which was a good mix , no children on board. We loved the experience as we had done ocean cruises in the past . Loved the fact all was paid for , no extra costs on board unless you wanted a massage, hairdressers , extra washing done or something at the shop. Disembarking went just as smoothly and the Hotels recommended by the cruise to stay in and fantastic as so easy to find and again good 4 to 5 star service. If we get the chance again would certainly do another. Read Less

This was a once in a lifetime cruise for myself & my husband. Our cousins had been on 3 before and desperately wanted us to go with them on their 4th. So it started, we were picked up from the airport and transferred to a Hotel served drinks and canapes before being taken by coach to our boat. Upon entering we where greeted by Miguel and his very professional crew aboard Scenic Pearl for the start of our Moselle Rhine cruise . Our luggage and embarkation went very smoothly (obviously done many times before) we were seated in the lounge area with a welcome drink where we where put at ease with a talk by Miguel. They obviously travel & work as a family and we were made to feel part of that family from the very start. Excited we were taken to our cabins & not disappointed they were very clean & smelt fresh. Our Butler Costin was very professional and delivered exceptional services always with a smile to die for. The dining staff were 2nd to none, and special compliments to the head chef Mr Buti. Most of our spare time was spent in the lounge & bar area where Antonio, handled the bar like he was playing the violin with style. Richard our cruise director never failed to impress us with his knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication to making sure that we had the best of everything even when things beyond his control like being held up at locks that would throw all arrangements out the window late at night and have everything organized by morning . It was awesome to see when in port and their was loading to be done all hands were on deck. A mammoth job done by great teamwork. If there were any complaints it was that the 4 last port stops didn't really have much in the way of souvenir shops (started from Basel) so don't leave shopping till then. And maybe a little more dancing music on board for the young at heart. Everything about this cruise was exceptional from beginning to end. Compliments to Miguel, and to all 51 of your children Costin beautiful Daniela, Ramona, Haris, Tibor, Marion, Octavain, Branko, Marina, Antionio,Tibor, Sasa, Dominika, to name but a few thank you for the memories. Romantic Rhine and Moselle Monday 15th Joined the cruise in Basel, Scenic provide phone numbers and email addresses of your ship which in our case was the Scenic Pearl launched in 2011 (no swimming pool yet) so the day before you can send them an email and ask where they are berthed. The taxi ride from the central station in Basel to their berthing point cost just under 36 Swiss Francs. You have barely time to get out of the taxi before the Scenic crew pounce on your luggage and whisk it away to your cabin. No hassle once on board they sit you down in the lounge give you a cool drink and a refreshing towel and after a while ask for your passports which you retrieve the following day. Then you get your room entry cards and are shown to your cabin. At 19:15 you get the welcome and safety briefing and are introduced to the Captain, Hotel Manager and Cruise Director. The cruise director this time was a young lady from Romania by the name of Andreea. I don’t know where Scenic get their cruise directors from but I suspect they have a secret factory where they cast the moulds and break it after each one. As with the previous three Scenic cruise directors, always available, helpful and popping up even on the excursions to give you some helpful information. Once again full marks to a fantastic cruise director. The first night is a buffet dinner with the usual free flow wine. 22:00 All aboard and ship departs for Breisach Germany. Breakfast started at 06:30 and there was even a late riser breakfast up until 10:00. for those not going off the ship on excursions (nobody gets forced to go anywhere). The usual wide and varied choice, a great egg station manned by a young Indonesian who managed to remain cheerful throughout the voyage despite having to get up early every morning and do perfect eggs and omelettes for everyone. In addition there was a menu on the table where additional items could be requested such as Eggs Benedict. The usual buffet lunch choice in the Crystal dining room consisted of three main courses one of which was always vegetarian but often I skipped the main course as the buffet had such a wide and varied selection. For the next two weeks you can forget your diet and the weighing scales, you are going to put on weight. A light lunch option is also available in the River Café but you can forget about that if you think it’s going to control your weight as it’s far too near the pastry and snacks counter. Tuesday 16th Scenic Free Choices included the Black Forest and Colmar also a bike tour Breisach to Colmar. We opted for the pretty village of Colmar one of those small attractive French towns with Petra as our guide. 14:00 All aboard and we sail to Kehl 15:00 Mandatory safety drill. 16:30 Daily port talk with Andreea (earlier today) which usually takes place on a daily basis just before you go into dinner around 19:00 and gives you an explanation of the entertainment on board and the upcoming daily excursions. 18:45 Captain’s Welcome Cocktail Reception followed by the Captain’s Welcome Gala dinner Wednesday 17th Scenic Free Choices: included Mittlelbergheim in the Alsace Wine Region, Strasbourg and shopping with the chef. If you have never been to Strasbourg then that is a must, so picturesque but since we did that last year we opted for the visit to the Alsace Wine region where we had a great introduction to Alsace wine from Pierre Albert of Seltz albert-seltz.com/ who has his own winery and was not only very knowledgeable but also very entertaining, well worth a visit if you are a wine lover. 16:30 All aboard Scenic Pearl sails to Gambsheim arriving 19:00 19:45 Private concert at Rastatt Palce. Reception drinks, Tour of palace followed by a very enjoyable concert. 23:45 All aboard Scenic Pearl sails to Mannheim arrives next morning. Thursday 18th Scenic Free choices: Heidelberg & Castle Tour, Sweet Tastes of Heidelberg Tour and Hockenheim Formula 1 Tour. Many times you will have difficulty deciding which of these tours to go on as you can only choose one. We choose the Heidelberg and Castle Tour even though we had done it previously and we got the same entertaining guide Klauss who looks a bit like Albert Einstein. Heidelberg is another of those picturesque places which is a must, your camera will be in overdrive so many fantastic views. 14:00 All aboard Scenic Pearl sails to Rudesheim arriving 19:30. 19:30 Barbeque dinner on the sundeck, not something I look forward to, I prefer the more relaxed dining in the Crystal dining room but I gather its popular with the Australians customers. However plenty to eat and drink and as usual very tasty. Friday 19th Scenic Free choices on the Guided Tour of Siegfried’s Musikkabinett and a cable car ride across the vineyards to up to the Germania monument. Some give this a miss as they are afraid of heights and so am I but this is no great deal the cable cars are not that far above ground level and if you miss this you will miss some of the most spectacular views on this tour. I have been there three times and never tire of seeing these views. Rudesheim is another charming little town which you will love, loads of bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and the ship within easy within easy walking distance although Scenic does have a mini train transfer both ways 14:00 All aboard Scenic Pearl sails to Koblenz through the Rhine Gorge. Book your place early on the sun deck for this journey though some of the most stunning scenery on this trip as the Scenic staff makes sure you enjoy it along with your favourite drinks. 18:00 Scenic Pearl arrives in Koblenz this is just a brief stop before you enter the Moselle River so you have just enough time after dinner to walk around before the ships departs for Cochem at 23:00 but on your return from the Moselle there is a longer stop and tour of Koblenz. Saturday 20th 07:00 Scenic Pearl arrives in Cochem. Scenic Free choices on the 20th Guided walking tour of Cochem and visit to the Reichsburg Castle. There will be mini buses to take you up to the castle where you get another informative and entertaining tour of the castle conducted by the curator who was a Dutchman. Cochem is another of those places you will want to return to, whichever way you turn all you can say is wow like so many other places on this cruise. Plenty of free time in Cochem as The Pearl sails for Bernkastel at 09:00 the following day. Sunday 21st Time to relax today with the Scenic Pearl sailing the beautiful Moselle Valley. This was the part I enjoyed the most I just wish we did not have to sail so much during the night but to cover the distance and the 48 locks apparently that is a must. 15:30 Scenic Pearl makes a technical stop to allow all bike riders to disembark and pedal the 25km from Traben Trabach to Bernkastel while us less active ones enjoyed the views from the sun deck with a nice glass of wine as we covered the same distance. 18:30 Scenic Pearl Arrives in Bernkastel. Monday 22nd Scenic Free choices, Luxembourg City tour, Bernkastel Walking Tour and Trier City Tour, I wish I could have done all three but ended up in Luxemburg where we had an interesting tour of the old city and a bus drive through their financial centre where they seem to have banks as far as the eye can see, thankfully outside the old part of the city which has been preserved. 21:00 All aboard as we sail back along the Moselle River to our next stop at Koblenz. I personally could have spent the whole two weeks just sailing along the Moselle and it’s a shame that we spent so little time there and did a lot of the sailing at night. I hope one day Scenic just has a Moselle river cruise I gather the ship can travel as far as France along the Moselle but the guide in Koblenz said that after Luxemburg it gets a bit industrial and is not very scenic. Monday 23rd 12:00 Scenic Pearl arrives in Koblenz Walking Tour of Koblenz second time for us and we choose the same guide Elmar who was just as entertaining and interesting as last time. Then it was the cable car ride to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress probably not something for those who don’t like heights which I don’t but having done it once before it was worth it, not just to see this magnificent fortress but also for the view over Koblenz and the confluence of the Moselle River as it flows into the Rhine. Here we also had the Scenic Sundowners drinks and snacks. I have to say here that this time the catering was not as good as last years and at one stage they even suggested we pay for a second drink until the ever present cruise director Andreea stepped in. 22:00 All aboard Scenic Pearl sails for Duisburg. Wednesday 24th 08:00 Scenic Pearl arrives in Duisburg. Scenic Free Choices included a visit to the Zollverein Coal Mines Site tour, a former coal mine which has now been turned into a museum and is an UNESCO World Heritage site. Most people choose a walking tour of the charming village of Xanten followed by a Duisburg Brewery visit I guess that says a lot about all of us that we were more interested in the brewery than the industrial past of the Rhur area of Germany. 13:00 Scenic Pearl sails for Maastricht (Netherlands) Thursday 25th 10:00 Scenic Pearl arrives in Maastricht. Maastricht walking tour another picturesque small town this time in the Netherlands and of course Scenic provide another informative and entertaining guide for the walk. 22:00 All aboard Scenic Pearl sails to Nijmegen. Friday 26th 13:00 Scenic Pearl arrives in Nijmegen Scenic Free Choices included a Guided biking Tour of Nijmegen. A Guided Walking tour of Nijmegen or a visit to the Arnhem Airborne Museum. We opted for the walking tour, I didn’t think that Nijmegen was as interesting or as picturesque as Maastricht. 19:00 All aboard Scenic Pearl sails to Veere. Saturday 27th 12:00 Scenic Pearl arrives in Veere. 13:00 Scenic Free Choices included a Delta works visit a Guided biking Tour of Veere a Guided walking Tour of Veere. We choose the Delta works which is the Dutch flood defences on the North Sea another must see, an engineering marvel. This was followed later that evening by a choice of dining out at one of three restaurants. Our choice was the Westkaap built on a dyke overlooking the North Sea. The food was average but the restaurant given that it was already a hot day was like a sauna. 21:30 All aboard Scenic Pearl departs for Antwerp. Sunday 28th 09:00 Scenic Pearl departs arrives in Antwerp. 09:00 Scenic Free Choices included Bruges Excursion or a Guided walking tour of Antwerp. Bruges is the Dutch equivalent of Heidelberg or Strasbourg your camera will have a busy time in Bruges. Your free time is spent visiting the chocolate shops recommended by your tour guide who steers you away from the mass produced stuff to the genuine Belgium chocolate. Don’t miss a visit to Bruges. 16:00 All aboard Scenic Pearl departs for Amsterdam. 18:45 Captain’s Farewell Cocktail Reception. 19:00 Captain’s Farewell Gala dinner Monday 29th When you wake up the Scenic Pearl will already be docked in Amsterdam, disembarkation. Please note the arrival times are approximate but it seemed to be the case we were always ahead of time arriving. Once again a superb crew, the hotel manager Miguel remarked at the farewell dinner it consisted of over 20 nationalities who all managed to work together with no problems. Nothing was too much trouble and while you were getting this service you were usually sailing along often trying to eat the next meal or enjoying drinks, snacks etc and the most wonderful sights slipping past the windows. Portobello restaurant is of course wonderful not only for the food and wine but for the people you sit alongside and meet a wonderful experience every time. A similar experience with Table La Rive although more for the variety of wine with that particular dinner. I haven’t said that much about the evening’s entertainment as usually after dinner all I wanted to do was retire to my cabin and relax. However each evening and sometimes during the day there was something going on in the River Café with an entertainment group or a demonstration or quiz and of course late night snacks and free flow drinks. Each day chocolates and small snacks are left in your cabin often untouched along with the mini bar, I think at most we used less than a handful of bottles having had sufficient to drink during with the meals or even the occasional afternoon drink in the river café. However I do miss the bar of chocolate which they used to have in the fridge but perhaps it’s just as well they took it away and provided something lighter with not so much chocolate. The cabin slippers you are allowed to take with you but this year they have replaced the white slippers with black ones and for some reason these do nothing but leave a trail of black fluff so I hope they go back to the white slippers. Also the soap seemed to be in short supply we were given one small bar for the whole cruise and also had to request extra shower gel. However the bathroom which for a junior suite also includes a bath is well equipped with an excellent shower, hairdryer and toiletries. The cabin gets cleaned and made up twice a day and with an allowance of 4 garments a day for ironing and a kg of free laundry per cruise (this for the junior suite). When I left anything for ironing it was usually back by 5 p.m. the same day. My favourite meals: the buffet breakfast and lunch where the choice was wide and varied along with a wonderful young man who did the best omelettes and eggs you could wish for. For me the highlight of the tour was the Moselle if only that could be a lot longer I think that journey along with the Rhine Gorge must be the most wonderful in all of Europe. We took our first river cruise in 2014 Amsterdam to Budapest with Scenic who were more an accidental choice given that the previous couple of river cruise companies I tried were full. This cruise was our fourth with Scenic and before even setting foot on board for this one I had already booked my Douro river cruise with Scenic for 2017 and I am currently working on plans for Bordeaux in 2018 but cannot book that until next March. This was our first river cruise and we had heard so much we were looking forward to the trip very much. The first greetings by the crew made us very welcome and were settled into our cabin very quickly by our butler Ilona. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of space we had in our cabin and the fact that our cases were under the bed made it so much more roomy. Having our own balcony was great too. The eating arrangements were excellent with plenty of choices of menu items and places to eat. The quality of food was excellent and you would have thought that you were eating in a 5 star restaurant. The lounge facility's were again excellent providing comfort and tea and coffee facilities at all times. Entertainment on board was very good and variable. The day tours also were very good with a high standard of guides. Finally I cannot speak highly enough of of the staff. From the cabin staff, reception staff and the dining and waiting staff were excellent. I made a point of addressing all staff by name to show respect for the work that they do and the personal attention they paid to the guests. Whilst some may consider the overall costs expensive the fact that you don't have to put your hand in your pocket for two weeks makes it reasonable. We are so pleased that we did the cruise and recommend it to others. Read Less

Like the title says, we really enjoyed ourselves. The 'Scenic Pearl' is an immaculately clean and spacious ship. All of the crew, the cabin maids, butlers, bar staff and the waiters were extremely accommodating and friendly. Eniko, our cheery cabin person kept our cabin spic and span. Ratko, our butler, was available at any time to provide us with whatever we needed. The waiters in the main dining room and the Portobello room were good-humoured, friendly and very, very attentive. I want to name them all as being outstanding all but I'm afraid I'll miss one or two. We were definitely spoiled. For every meal, the food was delicious and fresh. The chef and his crews did a splendid job in preparing our always tasty meals. In the lounge, Antonio, Sandy and Svetla served us quickly and efficiently with our drinks. Their patience and good humour in dealing with a bunch of sometimes half-drunk senior citizens was amazing and appreciated. I have to say a good word about our Cruise Director, Werny Beyer (I hope I got the name right). He has a stern look and piercing eyes. However, his daily updates were very enjoyable and filled with good laughter. His somewhat stern appearance hides a great sense of humour. We took excursions at every port and were provided with knowledgeable and informative guides. The 'tailormade' GPSs were great. We could wander around during the tours and still hear the guide. What a great idea. Finally, what made our cruise so enjoyable was the mix of passengers. More than half were Australian. There were about 20 Canadians, including us. As well, there were about 20 British and 4 Americans. My wife and I tried to mix with as many different people as possible. For most of the time, we fell in and sat with 3 Australian couples and had a truly great time. Who knew that Australians have such great sense of humour?! We laughed long and hard about everything and nothing. Most fun of all was learning new words and phrases from our Aussie friends. To paraphrase Churchill, "Australia and Canada are two English-speaking countries separated by a common language."   Read Less
