This was advertised as a luxury, all inclusive cruise. It was a stunning ship. The cabin was a great size with lots of storage areas. Really enjoyed the balcony when there wasn't another ship parked along side of us. This happened a couple of times and it prevented us from using the balcony because of the lack of privacy. It certainly curtailed your view. The staff worked very hard and treated you royally. The excursions were the highlight of the cruise. We saw so many interesting things at each stop. They were organized well. Kudos to the Cruise Director, Alex. The dinner dining experience was disappointing. We expected more considering it was a luxury cruise and the price we paid. The servers work very hard but they need more of them. As soon as a passenger sits down he/she should be acknowledged and served. Sometimes we had to wait for a while for the server to give us water/menu/wine, etc. We shouldn't have to wait and certainly not ask for anything. The food variety was disappointing for a luxury cruise. The portions were small as well. The server would ask if you wanted bread and you would be given a small piece from a basket. The bread basket should be put on the table when you arrive. This would alleviate some extra work for the server as well. Are they rationing the bread? Lunch and breakfast were generally buffet style with a good variety of food items. There should be more interactive activities in the evening for the passengers who wish to participate. On the second last night of the cruise we had a music trivia game along with a Disco night, all on the same evening. I personally think people were starved from the lack of entertaining activities. River cruising is becoming popular with a variety of age groups. It's not just tor the 50+. Scenic should modify their evening entertainment programs. We will not travel Scenic again. But saying that I did enjoy the trip as it was a different experience for us. However, it didn't meet our expectations. I hope Scenic looks seriously at these reviews because many people are giving the same suggestions for improvement. Read Less

My wife and I had never taken a river cruise before and were somewhat apprehensive. We need not have been. From start to finish our Rhine Highlights cruise on the Scenic Opal from Amsterdam to Basel was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Our cabin was spacious and very comfortable. The shore excursions were well planned generally taking up the morning while in the afternoons we cruised the Rhine. The shore excursion options catered to a range of interests and capabilities and we were disappointed only once. On board, the meals were excellent (and especially the two special invite dinners). I ate fish most nights for dinner and the fish was delicious and invariably cooked perfectly. One of the reasons we chose Scenic over Viking were recommendations based on the quality of the food and wine and the all-inclusive nature of the fare. On all counts, Scenic would be difficult to beat. The wine and liquor choices were varied and of high quality. Our butler, Sirjan was exemplary and we were very pleased with the attention that we received form Robert at the bar and Milan in the dining room. As for Andreea the Tour manager, Liz and I cannot say enough; she was superb. We are already looking at another Scenic cruise for next year, 2020. Read Less

Embarkation went smoothly although we didn't embark from Basel but from Bruisach, and we had to wait at the airport a while because an abandoned piece of luggage caused the airport lock down. The ship was spacious and airy, and the cabin comfortable with the balcony in use all the time, which made it seem even more spacious. Dining was good. We always used the main dining area, and enjoyed the alternate menu option on a couple of occasions. The Table La Rive was exceptional and the Portabello restaurant was also good. We thought the chefs were exemplorary, working in such a small space, and we had never tasted lamb chops like it ever! We enjoyed the musical interludes both on board and the special event in the baroque palace. Then we made friends in the bar afterwards, dancing the night away. Service was exceptional, the staff were all friendly, professional, and attentive. All areas of the ship were exceptionally clean. Also the turn down service when the cabin had its second cleaning of the day was excellent. We enjoyed the shore excursions, we usually chose the guided walking options to get to know the town we were staying in, and the Mercedes Benz tour was mind blowing! We did think the tours were a little short, and there could have been an afternoon option, but also enjoyed the time to relax on the balcony. Read Less

We recently cruised on the SCENIC Opal on the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. This was supposed to be a ‘luxury’ cruise. Last year, we had a fantastic experience cruising the Douro River on their Evergreen ship. We couldn't fault anything. All the staff were professional, courteous and friendly. We thought the Scenic Luxury Cruise would be equal or better, but we were wrong. In our opinion, the Evergreen cruise rated 5 star ... the Scenic cruise 4 star. A number of the staff were unprofessional, and were trying too hard to be funny. When I asked if the sandwiches at the bar could be toasted, a straight faced "NO" is not the answer I wanted to hear, followed by "just kidding!" Also, at dinner when I asked if I could have a glass of wine, "No we don't have any" wears thin over time. Staff mucking around with each other in front of customers also wears thin, especially this incident: Female bar worker prodding and annoying a male bar worker who was trying to serve me. Eventually, he got tired of her and said "talk to the hand". She replied with "talk to the finger" (holding up her middle finger!) Not what I expected to see on a so called ‘Luxury Cruise’! Early one morning, I left 4 shirts to be ironed only (no washing). When they hadn't arrived by 6pm I called and they were delivered to my cabin a few minutes later. They must have used a cold iron, because they were still creased! One night, I ran out of orange juice in the bar fridge and asked for more. I was promised a carton instead of a small bottle ... the juice never arrived. One morning I overheard a man asking the tour manager what port we were in. She sarcastically replied "you would have heard that in the Port Talk". He said he wanted a card with the port address because he was going on shore and wanted it in case he couldn't find where we were later that evening ... but she reacted before he finished his question. The barman was adding tap water to tall drinks (Mojitos, Midori Splice etc). When I sent a letter of complaint to SCENIC, I was told they are supposed to top up with sparkling water or lemonade … not tap water. Why aren't the bar staff trained properly? I've said it before, and I'll say it again ... this is supposed to be a luxury cruise! I realise maintenance has to be carried out during a cruise, but first impressions are lasting impressions, so seeing a letter missing from the SCENIC OPAL sign on the side of the ship wasn’t a good look! It was fixed, but a few days later another letter was missing! A number of passengers were rolling their eyes at dinner each night when served half a bread roll. Were we on rations?! Also, the lettuce/tomato/fetta/olives salad served for starters was pitiful and any half decent restaurant or café would be embarrassed to serve it. It doesn't take much effort to come up with a simple, yet tasty salad ... e.g. rocket lettuce/pear/walnuts/pomegranate topped with a sprinkle of shaved parmesan. We paid a lot of money for this cruise, and expected quality ingredients, not limp lettuce. The food in general was good, but the food on the Evergreen Douro cruise was better (and the food on Celebrity ocean cruises is far superior). The cabin was very comfy and roomy, but it would have been nice to find a complimentary toothbrush and toothpaste in the bathroom. When I asked for one, I was told they didn’t have any. To their credit, the bed was fabulous! Also, the shower was great. On the last day, I tried to submit the electronic cruise survey using the screen/keyboard in the cabin, but it wouldn’t allow it. I also tried on my mobile phone, but it quit before I could complete the survey (it closed just after giving comments on Room Service). The same thing happened when I used one of the ship’s iPads (it also closed just after the Room Service question). When I told the woman on the desk, she just shrugged her shoulders … didn’t offer any explanation or solution. Very poor customer service. After speaking to some other people on the cruise, we found we weren’t the only ones with complaints about staff. I am curious to know if anyone else was unable to complete the electronic cruise survey. Read Less

I went to an information session and decided to book. They lived up to my expectations. Everything was organized and the staff was exceptional. One disappointment was that we did not start our cruise in Switzerland as planned. We were bussed right to another port and were not informed prior. The cruise line should have given us an explanation prior to the trip but did not. We therefore did not see any of Switzerland. The cruise director could have been a bit friendlier on the one on one basis. Dining staff were excellent, mainly Zoran and Nikolai. The room attendant did a fantastic job. Monica in the bar area was superb. Wonderful vacation and it was just as they say in the brochure....out of a fairytale. I would recommend Scenic to anyone. The fact that everything is paid up front and organized from the beginning was a big relief. One thing I did notice was that they did not have any music on the sundeck or any entertainment during the day such as a large chess board to pass the time and have some fun while in between ports. This was our first cruise ever. We had very high expectations based on what we heard about Scenic cruises and we can say that Scenic far exceeded these already high expectations. The food was excellent, the attention to even the smallest detail was outstanding, the staff was excellent, friendly, always smiling and ready to help. We especially appreciated our cruise director, Yvonne! Here enthusiasm was contagious, and her port talks each day were very helpful. The tours were extremely well organized, not too long and had wonderful, knowledgeable tour guides. We especially enjoyed the Heidelberg tour and the Amsterdam canal tour. Even though there was a slight hiccup due to a malfunctioning lock (out of Scenic's control), the Scenic team worked through it seamlessly. We were impressed. We highly recommend Scenic to anyone. We will definitely cruise with them again! Thinking of either the Prague to Budapest or a France cruise. Read Less

This was our second Scenic cruise "Girls Trip". We chose this particular route to see some of the highlights of the Netherlands and Germany. The itinerary was excellent and our choices of the tours each day was plentiful. We each chose according to our own interests and often ended up on different day tours. Having done a Scenic tour two years ago, we knew we could expect top notch accommodations, food and service. We love the attention to detail that Scenic has for each of its guests. We enjoyed the small pool on the sundeck as well as the saltroom and I loved the ebikes - I did both the ebike tour offered and again used an bike on free time one afternoon. Our meals were always delicious and so well presented. There were many options for dining if you opted not to have the choices offered each evening. The staff were the best! We always had the feeling that Scenic treats their employees very well as the staff from the maids to the butlers and servers as well as the nautical team all seemed very happy in their positions and eager to help guests in any way. Because we saw the cruise on Getaway and wanted to see the Christmas lights and markets of Europe. This was our first ever cruise and it will certainly be hard to top. Scenic thought if everything. Everything on this cruise was well organised especially free choice excursions. Nothing seemed to trouble the staff and they were excellent and helpful. The dining facilities and food were excellent and if anyone went hungry well that was their fault. The butler service was excellent as well, all staff made our first cruise that much more enjoyable. The only downside I would say was the dress standards. The A-Z booklet in the cabin recommended that no shorts were to be worn in the dining room and it was preferable for men to wear jackets to dinner. Very few of the guests took notice of this. Some even wore baseball caps in the lounge and dinning area, which to me is not the place for these items. Read Less

Scenic cruise was on our bucket list for quite a while and we have no regrets for choosing to sail with Scenic during the Christmas period. Great itinerary was provided for the 7 days and the last minute substitute the city of Obernai was simply gorgeous, passing the Alsace region and it’s small towns was like stepping into a winter fairitale. Cruise director Yvonne was phenomenal her knowledge of the region and her adventurous spirit was greatly appreciated hotel manager Djordje and staff were great and went above and beyond to meet our expectations. Our last dinner at Portobellos was excellent as was the chef. The cabin was spotlessly clean and spacious ,the view from the cabin was beautiful . crystal dining restaurant manager Gianni was were very attentive and knowledgeable as were the wait staff. Because it was advertise as a luxury cruise with 5 stars all inclusive beverage offer....and we like to stay in the same room for 2 weeks and not relocate our luggage (4 times in this cruise !) We chose a Royal Panamera Suite and we had the same food and beverage as others in a different deck Notice of low water was send by email the day of departure after we had inquire 2 weeks before and everything was supposed to be ok Hotel in Budapest was not as we were told. We were supposed to have a Premium Deluxe suite as confirmed by Scenic Under expectation....ordinary wine, no more Maccallen after one day, food was serve too fast, dining room like a cafeteria with bright lights, etc.. Had to change ships 3 times Pearl, Opal and Amber Service was not equal on every boat Did not see the Butler or inadequate On the Amber the waiter was impolite ....throw fork and knife on my table the last night, nearly agressive Guided tours were very limited to a walk in the city and no visit except for Melk and Wurzburg Read Less

You can really judge a company by the way they handle a difficult situation. My experience, and others, on this trip was that Scenic handled this absolutely terribly and conducted the tour at the most cheapest cost possible to themselves. They didn’t deliver a luxury experience, even though they still had the opportunity and facilities to do so, instead they provided terrible service with really cheap food (often buffets) and really cheap wine. I thought after their 16 million dollar class action case they lost last year that they would have improved their service, but they have obviously learnt nothing from past mistakes. We were advised by email on 19th October (5 days before our cruise, and we were already in Europe) that we would have to do land arrangements for four nights before joining the Scenic Jewel (instead of Scenic Opal) in Regensburg on 28th October. We were not advised of an option to cancel the tour. We were then emailed on 22nd October advising which hotels we would be staying at. Still no option to cancel. On the 24th October in Budapest we met our Tour Director, and was given an update on the trip. At that stage we found out that there were 109 people booked for this cruise but only 65 showed up in Budapest and 44 people cancelled and didn’t travel. After speaking with people on the tour we found out that scenic contacted some people before they left Australia and gave them an option to cancel, and didn’t bother to contact other passengers at all (including us, except for an email advising a change to the itinerary, but not advising any option to cancel). We were informed that the river was the lowest in over 100 years by the tour director, so obviously scenic knew well in advance that this trip was going to be affected and yet we were not advised. Looking at reviews of previous scenic passengers that cruised this itinerary this year, there were many disruptions, so scenic should have advised us well before we left Australia and given us an option to cancel like they did for only select passengers. We totally understand that scenic can not help the water levels being so low that they can’t operate the cruise at certain sections of the river, however, they knew the river conditions well in advance of the cruise as they’d had problems all summer. They should have given everyone, not just a select few, the option the cancel before leaving Australia. I wonder if they went ahead with this cruise because they had a travel agent famil group booked on this cruise? I telephoned and emailed Scenic in Australia from Budapest, after our tour briefing, however they were not of any help at all and just gave a generic reply to claim for compensation when we return home. Rather than going into a long letter, I’ve itemised below the terrible experience that we had from Scenic considering that Scenic has advertised this “Luxury River Cruise” as an all inclusive (spirits, wines, soft drinks, tea, coffee and mini bar), with anytime dining. - we were advised in writing by the tour director that we were allowed up to two glasses of wine, beer or soft drink with dinner and one glass with lunch during the first four days of our trip which was conducted by land (hotels and buses) - Even though scenic had the access to provide spirits, wine, coffee, tea, afternoon tea...etc at the hotels we were staying at, scenic would not include this for us and we were told we would have to pay for these ourselves. - The quality of the buffet food and wine we received at the hotels was of a very poor quality. The food was like something you’d get at an RSL club and the wines were really cheap and nasty. We stayed at very nice hotels, but received the cheapest quality of food and wine. - We finally boarded the scenic jewel in Regensburg, on 28th October. - We were onboard the ship for 10 nights. During this time, there was no anytime dining in the crystal dining room (as advertised by scenic) instead we were restricted to sometimes late dining times and the waiters were always in a hurry to get us fed and out of the restaurant. - Portobellos was only open 2 nights out of the 10! Why?? - For 8 out of 10 nights on the cruise there was only one dining option, and that was a fixed time, which is totally opposite to what scenic advertise. - There was absolutely no drinks or food service on the top deck during the entire cruise, which is completely the opposite experience of friends who have done this cruise before. I know there was part of the cruise when the top deck was closed when going under bridges, but we received no service there at all the entire cruise. Even when we docked in Amsterdam, we saw Viking and Avalon ships beside us serving their passengers drinks and food on their top decks.....our ship was completely dead in atmosphere and service. - The food quality on the ship was very “hit and miss”. Sometimes the food was very nice, other days they food was just terrible and quite often cold. - The cakes in the river cafe were a generic shop bought cake that was often stale by being cut and left in the display cabinet. - We were never offered a packed picnic lunch, as advertised by scenic, if we didn’t want to do an organised tour and just do our own sightseeing. - The entertainment onboard the ship was really amateur and something you’d expect on a budget cruise, not a luxury cruise. Heard good reviews plus family/friends already booked. The staff was terrific. From Beate-cruise organizer to wait staff of GEORGE, JANKO, BRANISLOV and MARISIO. To Maria room attendee. They were all courteous, friendly, attentive and just plain NICE people. Always served us with patience and a smile. They were the best part of our trip. The crew was also terrific in the smoothness of our journey. I would suggest snacks for the tables in the bar area as I went and bought my own chips and peanuts. Needless to say 2 days later snacks were served with our beverages. Pringles just didn't do it for us. MISS VICKIS CHIPS would be a great idea. Most of the tours were informative. The least favorite was Cologne. The tour guide spoke to long and really nothing to see except the church. Food was delicious. The cooks etc work very hard. The back drop of what the whole ship does is incredible. From Captain and crew to sous chef is amazing. GTEAT JOB Read Less

We are first time vacationers with Scenic and we wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again. Since riverboat cruising is new to us, we relied entirely on Scenic to book our flights, provide airport transfers and tours. They did not disappoint. We did the Rhine Highlights 8 day Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam on the Opal, their newest riverboat built in 2015. Of note, the hull of this ship is designed to travel in both low and high water levels when other boats would not be able. Deluxe Cabin #208 is well appointed with all the comforts of home, only scaled down because after all, this is a boat! We had no problems sleeping comfortably. We were very impressed with the shower pressure and the various spray selections provided. The boat/ship is contemporary in design and decor with space for everyone. Besides the view on the top deck, covered areas with loungers, chairs and tables, a running/walking track and small pool, this space is a great gathering place to meet new people while taking in the sights. Dining buffet or a la cart, the menu choices will not disappoint. Everything including the recommended wine/food pairings is thought of for your dining experience. You will not be able to escape adding on some weight. The arranged tours are well thought out and planned. You only need to ask questions, make a choice, show up and leave the rest to them. Last but not least, the staff. Everyone on the ship is there to make your time with them THE BEST!!! I cannot single out any of them as they were all very attentive, friendly and a good reason to cruise with them. We plan on booking with Scenic again. Read Less

This was our first cruise (river/ocean). We wanted the best and were to understand Scenic Tours was the best (all inclusive/luxury). We selected a deluxe suite on the Diamond Deck. The cabin was acceptable, clean compact with great housekeeping services. The dining aboard was very good with a wide selection of items. The Cruise Director and most of the staff were excellent. The excursions were acceptable - although our hike through the Black Forest was simply a walk up the driveway alongside a vineyard to a farm to have Black Forest cake - no sign of a Black Forest. The Butler service Scenic describes was non-existent. Our 'Butler' never introduced himself, showed us to our cabin or had any interaction with us. After talking to other passengers I learned where the card was to order coffee in the cabin in the morning. The special dinner they describe as: Table La Rive was nothing better than a regular dining room dinner. There was a table assigned at the back of the dining room, we were not even seated at that, since the table was occupied by 10 friends that wanted to sit together. The food not special, the sommelier had taken (?) the basic wine course. The food: I do not need to be told what an 'amuse bouche' is, but they should look up the definition; after being asked how I wanted my beef cooked - I was told it would be med-rare, why ask?; the meat was tough. I think the biggest disappointment was the balconies with the special windows. There was no need for them. The view for most of the trip, except 2 days, was non-existent. We were either facing an industrial park, a dirty brick wall (see photo) or were tied up to another boat (we embarked by walking through a Viking ship) - you could actually touch the windows of the other boat without leaning over the side. The cabin felt like a tomb. It will be a long time before we consider cruising. I will definitely ask more questions, although Scenic does not like to get specific on details (so how can you ensure what you will see out your cabin windows?). Probably will not choose Scenic again. Read Less

Overall, we satisfied with the experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Liked the variety of the shore excursions. Lots of walking though. We found the tailormade device was super helpful especially going out with the group. the size of the cabin was good and we were in deluxe balcony suite. The way the closet organized was very spacious and could store lots of things. The entertainment and activities on the boat cannot compare with ocean cruise due to the limitations of the space. The wifi service was great which let us able to keep in touch with our friends and share our experience. If it's the first time to travel Europe, having the land tour was suggested. The scene was beautiful and we took lots of pictures. The hotel in Zurich was fantastic. As for the embarkation and disembarkation, the process was smoothly and well-organized. We would recommend Scenic. Read Less

SCENIC EUROPEAN RIVER CRUISE Our cruise was from Amsterdam to Budapest with Paris and Prague extensions. I will start with the positive parts of the trip first Paris was wonderful the hotel and food was great our Tour Guide Joshua done a fantastic job he was available nearly all the time and very knowledgeable he also took us to our ship in Amsterdam the Scenic Opal. We were greeted on the ship by our Tour Director Tadej everything looked good we chose the Scenic Opal as it was one of their new ships we also paid extra for a balcony suite but in reality it was very small and for us was unusable ( a waste of money ), we seem to travel at night so for someone who likes taking photographs that wasn't any good at all. When we stopped most of the time we were docked up against another ship which meant we had to have our curtains closed nearly all the time, there was only one day and a half that we travelled during the day not what we were expecting on the cruise. Then the bad news was delivered on our third day when Tadej told us we were changing ships because of low water levels this was one big disappointment for everyone so after unpacking we had to pack again and bused to the next ship the Scenic Ruby the following morning after breakfast it was supposed to be an hour trip but after 3 hours we finally got to the next ship which was smaller and a downgrade from the Scenic Opal so we settled in unpacked thinking this was our ship to Budapest some people on board was asking the Tour Director if there would be anymore ship changes but he would not give a straight answer Scenic must have known before we even left Australia that there were water level issues but we were not told anything, this was very frustrating, so along we went for another 3 days low and behold another ship change at that point we could have went home but persevered, the next ship was the Scenic Crystal not much better than the Scenic Ruby so after 3 ships we were on our way to Budapest. We lost a fare bit of time in bus travel, itineraries were tried to be kept but this meant more time on buses which lead to late lunches and dinners. Crews on the three ships were very much under pressure with all the ship changes and that reflected in there service. Breakfast and lunch was a buffet style very repetitive food and not really five star quality, dinner was suppose to be a la carte even that was questionable. On the other positive note Prague was excellent our Tour Guide Petr was by far our best made our stay in Prague memorable he done a great job. In the end Scenic"s customer service made out we were only inconvenienced for 3 day in our eye's that was total rubbish!!!!!!! I can go on and on but would we recommend Scenic River Cruises definitely not and we will not do another Scenic tour. Read Less

My friend suggested this cruise and it sounded wonderful. Overall it was! The dining staff really made the cruise worthwhile. They were friendly, extremely professional and hardworking. They really took the time to make sure you felt looked after. The Chef was excellent and important because I have a food allergy. The food was plentiful and there was a great variety. I felt the off ship tours were interesting but sometimes the bus trips to and from the ship seemed long. Our cruise Director was enthusiastic and informative but the many introductions of staff and crew went on too long. One introduction on the first day would have been enough. My favourite part was being on the ship and cruising on the river. It wasn’t always picturesque, especially through the industrial areas, but I still enjoyed the breeze and the sunshine on the top deck. On the second day, I put two blouses out for ironing only. Apparently, for the first time ever, laundry went missing. I had to ask several times, but I do believe they were doing their best to locate my tops. They were finally returned to me late on day 7 of an 8 day cruise. Laundry service was included but obviously we were hesitant to try it again. The much anticipated in room mini bar was a disappointment because it offered mostly alcohol. Very limited snack selection. Pringles and biscuits, and not every day. At this point, I’m not sure that I would travel with Scenic again, but I would definitely enjoy another river cruise. Read Less

We were supposed to board at Basel but due to a lock problem we started at what was the second port Breisach not a problem. We had been with Scenic before so knew what to expect and it was all as we thought it would be. Due to any early flight we arrived about 1pm and were told to wait in the lounge as boarding was officially 3pm. After a quick drink we were asked by Marketa the hotel manager so register at reception and we could go straight to our cabin registration took about 30 seconds! Excellent cabin plenty of storage space and the balcony system gives you a nice open atmosphere. Later had the orientation by Richard the cruise director and realized we had met him before on his previous sea cruise director roles. He was excellent throughout the journey very knowledgeable very helpful and very funny (even if we had heard some of his stories on one of the sea cruises!) Dining was what we expected and gave the opportunity to sit with different people each night we met lots of interesting folk from all parts of the world. Excursions were varied and enjoyable with very knowledgeable guides The staff helped to make the trip even better with their friendly and helpful attitudes too many to mention individually but special thanks to our butler Marius who couldn't do more for us (even bringing a cognac nightcap to the cabin Thanks) Would we go again with Scenic Definitely!! This was our first river cruise and a great experience. Richard the cruise director was amazing, he was living and very knowledgeable. Looked forward everyday for this review for the next day of what to expect on the excursions. The staff that service you is top notch!! They are all very friendly and profession. I really enjoyed that on disco night, the staff is able to join in and be part of the celebration. The ship crew is a real family and so accomodating to everyone's needs. And trust me we had some high maintenance people on the cruise and they were always so pleasant to really demanding and critical people. These people deal with all sorts of people and handle it with such professionalism. For the most part our meals were excellent but the exclusive Table Le Rive was a little disappointing. That is not the equivalent of very fine dining exclusive tasting if you're use to paying $200 for that experience it's not in that category. Go to dinner on time, it takes awhile to serve 160+ people. The wine pairings for dinner were always excellent choices. The bartenders are great at making you anything and suggesting different drinks. The excursions were great an the exclusive opera concert is a real treat!! We would definitely do another Scenic cruise again. It was great to have everything included and no hassles for drinks and excursions. This was our second cruise with SCENIC. After having had such a wonderful time travelling from Budapest to Nuremberg last year, we decided to trust Scenic once again and try the Amsterdam to Basel tour. Once again, we were not disappointed. Richard, our cruise director was accommodating, efficient, entertaining and had us well organized, informed and looked after. The staff on board are really good at what they do. We felt welcomed, pampered and genuinely appreciated. Food was excellent and plentiful ( as was the wine and other refreshments. ) Our excursions were well organized, very professionally guided and, thank goodness, did not require long rides on buses. Scenic certainly knows how to keep you busy and interested. I have come home for a rest and a serious diet. Embarkation was fast and efficient. I happened to be suffering from a nagging dose of bronchitis plus being up for about 30 hours. While we arrived at a time that would normally require a few hour wait for our cabin, our manager and head of house keeping graciously made our room available early. This was very obliging and very much appreciated. Disembarkation had a bit of a twist in that we did not get to our designated final destination. A problem with a lock on the river, not a scenic problem, required we disembark short of Basel. Richard handled it well and our airport transfers were completed without any issue at all. Our personal highlight was our visit to Strasbourg but, I cannot fault one single outing. Our enrichment evening was wonderful. River cruising may not be inexpensive and, agreed it may not be for everyone but, if you do choose a river cruise, you cannot and will not get any better itinerary or treatment than what you receive from Scenic. The fact that everything is included, no tipping, top shelf products on the bar, and all excursions included goes a long way to easing the mind and alleviating the all to often nickle and dime annoyances you experience on other lines. And, you may even get to meet Richard's Disco loving cousin while on board but that, my friends, is another story. Read Less

By all means everyone should explore Europe. But the means of transport is a large factor in the day to day life of your journey. I investigated river cruising for a very long time before booking, and found that it was not what I expected, largely due to what information was not supplied prior to embarkation. For example, travelling down the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers nowhere was I told that there was a total of 68 locks, and part of the journey was on man made canals, not the river. It seemed every night at dinner the ship passed through 2 locks, and the view out the window was cement walls. Also, the room was so small that twice I hit my head on the sink, when lowering myself to the toilet. The bed also was a struggle as it was 2 mattresses set on the base, which kept spreading apart, with me finding myself in the crack between the two. The itinerary gave the choices at each port each day, but failed to say that actual time in the port could be as short as 2 to 3 hours. Not really enough time in a port. And lastly, I really did not get a sense of the close quarters in the Crystal dining room or the lounge. There is zero private space when dining, and the table for guests at the next table we’re about 8 inches away from your table, so everyone heard everyone else’s conversations. The lounge was the same, with zero space. I do not know how many times I banged my shins on the little tables, trying to get to, or from my seat. Also, the noise level with so many people in such a confined space was deafening. And finally, I was disappointed with the bar. I am not a big drinker, and my favourite drinks are fruity blender drinks like daiquiris, pina colada etc. I saw a blender in pictures prior to the cruise, so I thought it would be fine, because search as I did, I could not find a bar drink list online before we booked the cruise. Well, there was a blender at the bar, but it was only used 2 times I knew of in our 2 week cruise. Pine Coladas were shaken, not blended. Daiquiris were not available. So I tried to think of every kind of drink I could possibly order, that they might be able to make. I ordered a Harvey Wallbanger, and they googled it, and made one, although not a good one. I asked them to make a drink in the blender, that they usually use the blender to make. They did not understand the request, or maybe there is no drink that is made in the blender. They serve wine, champagne, and any spirit mixed with something else, but as it turned out the blender was purely ornamental. So for 2 weeks there was not a drink I had, that I liked. Also, the entertainment in the lounge was background noise to the talking noise. So, while I enjoyed Europe, and will go back to Europe, I will never again go on a river cruise.n Read Less

Amazing customer service. Amazing staff. Food excellent, room comfortable, fridge always stocked. Could ask for nothing more. Excursions were excellent, informative. Evening entertainment was fun and not so loud that you could still carry on a conversation if you wanted to. Cabin was kept spotless as it was cleaned twice a day with a turn down service as well. Personal laundry was done same day. We had the best waiter in the business I am sure. Zoran made my dining experience excel. Loved the fact that one night we partied with the staff. Everyone was like a friend. Lots of choice for menu items and the wines were delicious. Leaving the ship was effortless, and you didn't feel rushed. Everything was arranged for you. It will be very hard to top this holiday, we are already looking at the Scenic book to plan our next holiday. When you have had the best the rest will not do. Read Less

I have always wanted to try the river cruise experience. I also wanted an "all inclusive" format. Tell me how much up front and please don't bother me after i start my trip. What an experience! Scenic advertises "all inclusive"! They do deliver, not only do they deliver but they exceed your expectations over and over and over again. Each day passed and we thought that the next day could not be any better but we were misled. Each day had more surprises, more activities that were not expected or anticipated! The food was unbelievable. This is coming from someone who is of Italian heritage and known to be a connosseur of good food. The night time entertainment was different each and every night. Usually entertainment from the country we were visiting. Very nice touch! The best night was the Symphony Orchestra of Vienna where we got a "private for Scenic guests only" performance. And it was held inside one of the Castle's in Vienna! Breathtaking experience. Absolutely loved it. The cruise director was awesome! He kept the group very entertained and ensured every single detail of the cruise was detailed for us and was followed through on. Very talented individual! The crew, cleaning, butler service, bar staff, etc. were all very much focused on client experience. There was much attention paid to detail and staff remembered favourites of the passengers - very impressive! Cleaning crew were meticulous - i cant count how many times my bath towels were changed! Excursions were very very detailed and just the right length of time! Great tour directors as well. Very knowledgeable and very willing to share any information we were looking for! An absolute amazing experience. Exceeded my expectations in every category. Will definitely sail with Scenic again and highly recommend to all my friends and colleagues. Read Less

We have been with Scenic before, and enjoyed this even more than previously. The ship is well designed, and there seems more space in the cabins than before. Meals are generally good, although at times there were dishes that cooked to my taste (vegetables rather too al dente and roast potatoes never crisp, although the main irritation was the time taken to serve the first course in the evening. Neither were we sure why the dress code is jacket or tie for men but virtually nobody adheres to it. Not therefore the smartest of cruises, and not really therefore matching up to the smartness of the ship and staff. The self-guided tours with handheld are a brilliant idea, but they need a lot more work to become easily usable. There are no clear directions to the various marked sites, which have no numbers to conform with the numbered list of sites the tour is meant to cover. Read Less

We (my husband, 72 and I, 67) had cruised with Scenic before, two years ago and we have been on numerous ocean cruises. Scenic (which attracts mostly Brits and Australians with some Canadians and Americans) makes the trip so easy and enjoyable. Embarkation went like a dream - we were met at the Basel airport, transferred to the ship, fed lunch and relaxed in the lounge until the cabins were ready at 3pm. The ships are amazingly spacious, the food is incredible and the crew is never without a smile - always accommodating and pleasant. Ports and shore excursions are well chosen and the local guides are knowledgeable and fun. Perhaps best of all, a cruise on Scenic is truly ALL inclusive. Tips are included (even for the local guides and bus drivers), drinks (top shelf spirits and wines) are included and always very generous - even one load of free laundry is included on a two week cruise. They even include bottled water with every excursion and a map of the destination as well. The dining room is lovely with great views. We enjoyed the food very much and we are "foodies". Breakfast and lunch were buffet with a wonderful selection and you could always order off the menu as well. Food was always hot and delicious with many local specialties. You can have a mimosa with breakfast and wine/beer is served with lunch. Dinner was to order and generally offered four courses with vegetarian and healthy choices as well. Over the course of the two weeks we had beef, duck, chicken,many types of fish, pork and lamb. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious. There is also a cafe on the lounge deck which offers early/late breakfast and light lunch, along with fruit and pastries during the day. Always available in the lounge are various coffee drinks and many types of tea. Being a river cruise, the entertainment is not as abundant or flashy as that on an ocean cruise, but we had performances several nights by local artists. The sun deck up top is a great place to sit and watch the world go by, take a dip in the pool/hot tub or walk the small walking track. There is also a fitness center (a state of the art treadmill, elliptical and bike as well as free weights) and a salon where hair services and massages/treatments are available. The service is impeccable - the staff is so well trained and seem to really care if you are having a good time. Our cruise director, Patrik, was as good as I have ever experienced. He was knowledgeable, informative, patient and funny. His port talks each day explained exactly what to expect on each excursion. The wait staff, bar staff, cabin staff and everyone were just so pleasant and helpful. Our butler, Daniel, came by several times to ask if he could do anything for us. The ports were well chosen and the excursions really provided something for everyone. They ran like clockwork. If you don't want to join an excursion you can always take your "Tailormade" from your cabin (a type of GPS unit pre-loaded with story/history of the port) and do one of the tours on that. they also have electric assisted bikes for use (we did not try those). Scenic also provides a Scenic Enrich experience and a Scenic Sundown experience on each cruise. For our Scenic Enrich we had a tour of a castle and then a classical concert, complete with wine. Our Scenic Sundown was taking a cable car up to another castle and listening to local music while overlooking the city below. Disembarkation went equally as smoothly as embarkation. When it was time to leave for the Amsterdam airport we had a full size bus for 10 of us, and the Scenic rep at the airport even came in with us to help with printing our boarding passes.
