Costa Pacifica 9th Oct 16.  Savona, Marseille, Ajaccio, Cagliari, La Valletta, Rome, Savona.  Some nice ports on this short cruise even we ventured ashore in two of them decent weather made my slow walking enjoyable.  Our second time on the Pacifica not much had changed so we knew our way round, very easy embarkation  due to our Suite booking, was dreading the queues at Savona after the new club rules downgraded Gold Pearl to just priority boarding not preferential.   Enjoyed a really nice lunch in what was the Club Restaurant now set aside for Suite guests & Perla Diamante club members, but also for any paying guest who wish slightly nicer surroundings with mainly tables for two.   We elected to eat in the MDR for our evening meals as we enjoy a table for six with company, this proved to be a great choice as we met two from Norway, who told us a little more about that Country, & a couple from six Miles from where we live.  On to the food, in my opinion it is getting  un-expiring & very bland, limited in choice  to just two of each & very hard to understand what is being offered, surely someone should investigate why so much is being left on plates, I was glad however of the extras offered of Shrimp & Lobster even if being charged for them (15E) they saved the night at least twice after not finding anything to my taste on the Menu. A couple on our table were appalled by the menu's after cruising with Costa in the late 90's & telling friends about the wonderful food served to them then, I can relate to that as I still have most of those fabulous menus from those days.   Although mostly the same dishes were served to suite guests with perhaps one extra they did seem slightly better prepared & cooked, if fact I think we may just eat there on our February cruise, & least I won't have to pay for the Shrimp & lobster dishes.   The cabin was well appointed & nicely set out, spotlessly clean, choice of pillows was an added bonus as I do like a soft feather one beneath my head. A little about the difference between these suites & a premium balcony, they have extended the bathroom which now has a Jacuzzi bath, shower & a dressing room, bags of storage space both here & in the main cabin, overall just slightly larger than the normal balcony cabin, also being offered at the moment is the best drinks package the Intenditore (@ 49.95 euros a day free) for purchasing a suite. Not to sure that the so called Butler was of any use other than to serve breakfast, he never once asked us if everything was okay or if we wanted anything, I found him a little off-putting and would rather have had the cabin steward who was a delight.  Only went to one show but put off by the number of guests sitting on the stairs after show had started, chatting a blocking any chance of an exit should we need to leave. This practice should be stopped close the doors after the start, they were still coming in 30 minutes later, one even lent against my leg while sitting down, causing me some pain. However those on our table said they were enjoyable & mainly the songs were in English.  Booked this cruise mainly because we wanted to see the Blue Grotto in Malta having tried twice before with other lines & cancelled, pleased when tickets turned up and boarded the coach, only to be told boat out had been cancelled due to heavy waves & we were taken to top above the Grotto to look, oh dear I couldn't make it down the steps so had to sit up top till they all came back, so just going to have to book another cruise there, so I have another chance. (note to all wishing to see it, don't go while I am on board.)  It might sound that we did not enjoy this cruise, nothing could be further from the truth, Costa have proved once again what great value for the money their cruises are, & even with the falling standard of food choices, we still enjoy them overall, and look forward to our February cruise with them.  Marks out of ten, for service, cleanliness, value & perks we must give a good nine.  Read Less

Did the first 30 day leg of this cruise Savona to LA. Very poor communication on all aspects prior to cruise. Advertised drink packages confusing and mistranslated from Italian to English. In addition upon boarding discovered all wine, beer and water was free at lunch and dinner, nice surprise if you had already bought a drinks package. Boarding was shambolic, poor directions at port, no indication of where to go or where to deposit luggage. Once on board directed to level 9 for lunch but no indication that cabin was ready, only found out hours later from conversation with other guests after hanging around the buffet for ages. No option for dinner other than the 6pm (too early) or 8.30pm (too late) sittings, or pay for a pizza or burger on level 9. Suffered minor cold and sniffles, (which ran rampant around the ship) but forgot to pack any aspirin. None available on board unless you pay 62 Euros to consult the doctor, most expensive aspirin ever. By the way you could buy condoms, so no headaches please. Library cramped and books difficult to access, internet exorbitantly expensive, 99 Euro for 3GB, my home satellite package is 60GB for about 30Euro, so that is quite a mark up. Food average, and repetitive, cabins reasonable (had a balcony on level 8), evening shows fair to poor. On board crew helpful and trying, problem seems to be management incompetence and general penny pinching. No English language news except CCTV (China) and Korean TV. No CNN or BBC, yet multiple Italian,German, Spanish stations. Did have CNN and BBC for first day or so them mysteriously disappeared. Official line is technical problems but suspect it is about the Dollars Read Less

I preferred to try an European Line after have done many cruises with British and American Lines. I specially liked the food. The cabin was excellent as well as the cabin service. Entertainment and features of the ship very enjoyable. What really stood out for me and made my holiday very special was the Hungarian Latin Dance Group. They were four outstanding professionals and kind human beings. The two bands playing in the Grand Piazza were superb. I would like to do another cruise with Costa mainly because of them and the Entertainment Team, formed by Italian, Spanish and Brazilian nationals. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The one disappointment was Ingrid, the Hotel Officer. My wallet was stolen in the Port of Savona just before starting the Cruise. She just was not interested in my problem and frustration. With the help of my son from Britain I could get money sent to the next Port: Barcelona. Read Less

We chose this voyage because the timing allowed us to complete an earlier Princess cruise; spend a week driving the northern lake region of Italy; pick up this cruise, and then put us in position to cruise back to the States. (We were celebrating our 60th anniversary/80th birthdays...while we both were still standing.) We've traveled Costa previously. Costa Cruise Line may not be for everyone; it has been good for/to us. For whatever reason, some travel agents will not book you on Costa. If you find this to be the case and you really like your agent, book the cruise yourself and having done that, transfer the booking to your travel agent. Failing that, book the cruise yourself and forget the agent. Costa, in Europe, caters to typically not less than 6 nationalities aboard the ship. Your announcements are therefore (typically) in 6 different languages! Italian, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English. With the increase in Asian tourists, do not be surprised if additional groups are catered to. The preceding isn't bad, it just "is". Since the groups mentioned are on board, the ship's tours are offered in the respective language. That's the good news. The bad new if not enough people of a group book the tour; the tour is cancelled. The option is to join another group's "language" tour. The tour office is well organized and joining the correct tour is typically a non-event. Regarding dining room seating, somehow you are seated with a group that speaks your language. The food is OK. Formal nights are a farce (at least on this cruise). Tennis shorts and sweater around the neck was allowed. Entertainment was generally good+. The "My Way" dining room is less crowded since the majority of guests opt for the NY one. Service was fine in the dining room. Their main floor show is excellent with good cast. The other shows are good/typical. As with all cruises, there are daily events throughout the day such as lectures/demonstrations/movies and such. Their Internet room is fine. There are also stores in which to shop and naturally a Casino. Their "front desk" will change money (U.S./Euro/Pounds) which is important since you'll need $20 in pounds if you are going on a tour in Britain and plan to snack/have coffee. If Costa is going at the time you want to go; to the place(s) you want to go...the go with Costa...if nothing else, the price will be right! Read Less

Overall friendly helpful staff, excellent service and small, modern clean boat with comfortable atmosphere. Good points: varied entertainment, hardworking animation team, trips mostly good value for money, cabin comfortable size, good destinations, plenty to do throughout day, lots choices in buffet and Capri Grill. Suggestions: Need free 24 hour water /ice/ tea/ coffee could be located in Capri Grill. Could do with current FILMS on deck 11, every night, could rotate languages or subtitles. INDEPENDENT TRAVELERS need more info e.g. local bus services When disembarking, all guests need input whether COSTA transfers or not. (Ensure they all are promptly organised and not left in the sun for hours). A pleasure to be on a ship with so many lovely people (crew and guests) of varying nationalities. Fabritzio made the quizzes highly entertaining. Dancing on deck11 good fun. Good to watch all deck activities, made entertaining by animation team. Cooking competition good fun. Main entertainment in Cabaret Vienna Deck 9 singers, magicians, dancers some brought aboard others ship dancers, crew and entertainers. Grand bar had Guiseppe playing on keyboard and singing and alternated with Jack's band. Anticipate either a drinks package 28 euros a day for all inc (this is water/tea/coffee/juice as well as alcoholic drinks) or just drink couple a night. There is a variety of packages. One of the quiz teams was called Costalot!! Lot people managed to be independent travellers and raid the buffet for snacks juice and water. Read Less

We booked a Winter getaway at a fairly good price We are seasoned cruisers who enjoy the freedom cruising offers The ship is in good shape and the Decor is classically pleasant The design would work with fewer passengers and on cold windy sea days there is little to do. The 2 mini pools are useless for anyone wishing to swim. An enclosed pool area is missing and the price for Solarium use at €35.00 per day when all one wishes is to have a sauna i not value for money The ever present Solarium staff pushing Solarium deals are also indicative of the fact that the price is too high The free Gym, (one of the few free facilities), is fairly well equipped, very clean and almost always full at peak times The change rooms and toilets are 5 star The wine bar is an exceptional although very expensive feature Shopping on board is fairly limited but adequate, the range is limited, again because of the space problem The cigar smoking room was also a wonderful plus for the addicts and contained the smoke perfectly, a plus for Costa here The deck smoking area is a bit too close to the doors and can be a bit of a problem The animation staff do a lot to keep passengers busy with an array of ideas detailed in the daily newsletter The service most of the time is good and sometimes outstanding. Credit card verification was easy and quick We did not use the ships excursions and there were the usual shuttle bus charges for the ports where the ship docked a distance from town A safety warning was issued in the daily newsletter for Athens and not for Naples In Naples we were mugged and robbed in a busy street and have since learned that the town is regarded as unsafe. One must be extremely aware and should maybe walk around in a small group, leave all valuables and jewelry on board The ports were a poor substitute for those that have become unsafe, but that cannot be blamed on anyone. Kalamata was good, Napfilon, Volos were not great, Athens is Athens and Trapani was pretty run down and nothing special, Marseilles is also a typical large European port with many possibilities but also earned a safety warning The bus trip by Costa from Villach in Austria was uneventful as was the return trip Boarding in Savona was a little disorganized as usual - queue jumping due to poor system control, luckily not all passengers boarded in Savona Our Inside cabin was a little crammed due to the overhead bunks, although stowed take up a little extra space Otherwise it was adequate, without any problems and the cabin steward was invisible and efficient The food in the buffet was always fresh and the range sufficient to satisfy most tastes At peak times it was very busy and getting a table was not always easy The MDR food was mainly good , for breakfast and lunch the service was a little slow but the area adjacent the entrance was always well served and relaxing The early bird coffee and juice service was erratic and the coffeee quality questionable The small number of children seemed adequately entertained Entertainment was reasonable but with too many dance shows and if you arrive late not all seats have unobstructed viewing A theatre is missing but the ship design does not allow for it Disembarkation for us took a while and Costa mixed up our departure time and delayed our bus for over an hour We checked 3 times but were told to wait until we were called!! This retro ship was not for us and we prefer medium sized ships If you are English speaking multiple announcements will drive you mad. The manner less pushing and shoving of the French, Germans and Italians is also mindboggling. They all need to be first at all costs Read Less

Plus Points 1. Tour Price was significantly discounted 2. Excellent Itinerary 3. Overall Service & Cleanliness were good 4. We liked the dance lessons Negative Points 1) Embarkation was unusually slow, departure delayed by almost two hours 2) Smoking on board a) Limits to smoking only in restricted deck areas outside were not enforced, smokers were running everywhere. b) Cigarette smoke penetrated frequently into the cabin (air condition) c) Smoking lounge very smelly, ashtrays full over the days, place untidy and uninviting, no wonder the people looked for smoking elsewhere. 3) Dining a) Catering was strictly regimented with restricted hours of service, especially in the self-service areas: no coffee or tea after breakfast, no water after buffet time. In the restaurants with service, all drinks, including water, had to be paid. There was not free drinking water served at the table. b) Cuisine was practically limited to an average Italian style: pasta, pasta, cod fish and other simple dishes. Anything above that was subject to surcharge 4) Board Life a) Mismanagement of the ship space due to lack of personnel resulted in huge numbers of passengers crowded in the mid ship atrium with narrow gallery for the shops and the main entertainment lounge. The constant bidirectional traffic, limited practically to one deck, was a nerve wrecking experience every night. Rest of the abundant space with several bars and lounges with seating facilities were empty. Some were not manned or the entertainment was not attractive enough. Additionally, the best places along the corridors were taken up by ship photographers with their backdrops and other utensils. Never seen so many photo stations together before! This crowd feeling and people bumping to each other led frequently to harsh individual reactions. Our cabin was a Robinson's retreat! b) Entertainment: Theater show average with more accent to a naked flesh than to the level of artistic performance. Live music limited to single or max two performers, lot of electronic garbage. c) Inadequate information and solution of the problems, e.g.when a sudden crash of water supply all over the ship happened. 5) Summary We got what we paid for. Try to avoid Costa in future. Read Less

Lifts are slow and always congested , lengthy queus going to meals , embarking and disembalking First class shuttle bus rip off, 9.95 euro +tax return to travel 9 minutes into town on the Costa bus, local bus 3.00 euro return and drops off closer,Costa takes a grab wherever they can,you want a piece of pizza on this ship you pay for it,not on Holland ships Staff were great and so was most food. Previously sailed with Holland America and found that to be much much better in every way. Doing another cruise with costa because it is already booked but it will be my last. No english speaking movie channels on your room TV on this ship All in all spoilt by the Money Grab. Read Less

In an attempt to keep this brief I'll list good and bad points from our first ever cruise. We are a married couple in our 50s. Good: Service Facilities Entertainment variety Cadiz , Valencia and Lisbon Inside Cabin was adequate and I really can't see the argument for upgrading to outside or balcony given the short time we actually spent in the cabin. Steward Uri was excellent Fresh towels and bedding every day Pools Drinks package is a must even though we are not big drinkers Not too many announcements Embarkation and disembarkation were always smooth and well organised to minimise waiting times Variety of food Bad: Excessive charges for shuttle bus at some ports Too little time to explore Barcelona (4 hours) Rude people pushing and shoving at buffet meal time Read Less
