Arrival & Embarkation
We flew to San Juan on departure day. Our flight arrived on time around 1:00 and we went right to the port. The cab fare was stated at the airport and after about 20 mins we were at the port.
I noticed little to no signage instructing you where to go. We had priority embarkation and located the luggage drop-off and got in line. We were in our cabin about 25 mins after ...
As most know, Serenade is headed for the Mediterranean in April, so she is in her last few laps of the Caribbean for awhile. As well, she is slated for some refitting later in the year. The ship itself is showing her age and use. We were in JS 1100 at the aft of the ship. A very nice cabin with a large balcony. The bath door had been damaged and it appeared they had simply taped over the damaged ...
I am an avid "explore and conquer" type of vacationer, so always thought the cruising side would be too laid back, more like an all inclusive vacation where it was all sit around the pool getting drunk with several thousand others doing the same thing and nothing else really going on. Boy was I wrong! With five islands to explore, as well as all of the ship activities, it was almost too much to ...
Embarkation: we flew to San Juan 2 days ahead, to see Old San Juan. Had dinner and enjoyed the flamenco show at Barrachina one night. At the port early, took about 30 minutes from arriving until we were on the ship. Lunch in Windjammer- forgot this ship has very nice outside dining areas, which we used every time we ate in the Windjammer. Luggage was delivered in a very timely manner. Cabin was ...
Arrival
We flew to San Juan day prior on Jet Blue from Rochester, NY via JFK - no problems, on time, nice flights.
We took a taxi to our hotel. Driver quoted fixed price as listed on the sheet passed out at the taxi stand. Note there is a $1.50 fuel cost surcharge in effect.
We stayed at the Hotel Miramar. Not fancy, basic, small room, but adequate for 1 night. Clean, quiet [in spite of ...
This was our third cruise on RCI and our first on Serenade of the Seas. Everything wasn't perfect, but I didn't expect it to be. All in all a very nice ship and the staff clearly went out of their way to tend to our every need. That was a big plus.
Checking in was as smooth as silk. Took a cab from the San Juan airport; cost $25 with 3 bags and took about half hour to get to the Pan American ...
The embarkation procedure in San Juan could not possibly have been smoother. Although as Diamond Members we have priority check in, we did not need it as there were only a few people waiting when we arrived. (People who have not cruised before should be aware that it is customary to tip the baggage handlers who take the luggage at the port even though they only "carry" it a few feet.)
This was ...
This was our first cruise (with three children, ages 18, 14, and 14), so despite our research we were somewhat unsure what to expect. To our delight, we had a wonderful week. Here are some specifics:
Embarkation:
Thirty minutes from the door of the taxi to being on the ship, and it seemed to to take even less time. Really quite painless. We were on the ship by 12:40 and room was available ...
Overall the cruise was very good. The ports that were on this itinerary OK. St. Thomas and St. Lucia were the highlights for us. I would not go back to Grenada again - I thought Jamaica had the most aggressive peddlers, but Grenada tops them. We did a couple of tours of the islands - St. Lucia and St. Croix which were very nice. I would recommend doing something since none of the ports have a ...
Pre-cruise: From Alaska to San Juan - five timezones and 60 degrees difference in 14 hours - yikes! We were well received at the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza, arranged with our cruise reservation. Beautiful hotel, great rooms, quiet (in the tower across the street from the casino - lol. Transfers to pier on cruise day - no difficulty.
Embarkation: Painless. From the bus through the line ...
