Nice but could have been better

We brought my parents on a Panama Canal Cruise to Celebrate their 60th Anniversary and ended up bringing their best friends who were celebrating their 61st Anniversary. Getting on the ship was pretty easy since we had the Marriott guys (SpringHill Suites San Diego) to help bring our 12 bags to the dock!! Overall the Cruise was good. We had a few issues. The ship is old so there were quite a ...

The itinerary and time of year. Very very old ship ! Cabin smelled upon entering eyes watered and sinuses hurt after 24 hours. It took a total of 3 days for them to look into the filter going into the cabin. It was almost black !! After a fresh one put in the cabin smelled so much better !! Come on holland America you know the ship is old change all the old filters please. A fellow ...

Living in Florida we've been on several Carribean cruises and looked forward to the Panama Canal and it's Pacific ports. The size of the Veendam was great. Easy to get around on and not too crowded. The ship does show it's age. The crew for the most part was very efficient and polite. The head office staff not always so, more on that later. The main dining room food was good but nothing special. ...

Good way to see the Panama Canal

We chose this cruise with the purpose of experiencing the Panama Canal. Cruise ships are not my favourite way to travel but this was a good option as we were traveling with an older relative. The veendam is a mid-sized ship and we think that it was only a little over half full so it was very comfortable being on board. The other passengers are generally older so it does have a genteel feel to ...

Old, unmaintained ship, too many sea days, understaffed and poor service

Review for Veendam to Panama Canal & Central America

This was my 7th Holland America cruise and probably the last. Holland America has become the Macy's of the cruise industry. They hope to attract Nordstrom clientelle while offering Penny's level service. First, let's start with the itinerary. There are far too many sea days on this cruise, especially when you are stuck on an old ship with zero in the way of onboard activities (unless of ...

This cruise really wasn't our first choice, but when the earthquakes hit Italy we decided to make an adjustment in our "to do list" of cruises and moved a Panama Canal visit to the top, and we're glad we did. We read all the reviews about the Veendam, some of which weren't all that great, but decided we'd give it a go anyway. We're glad we did. The Veendam is smaller, so a more manageable ...

We got advance notice that boarding would be delayed due to the outbreak of norovirus on the two previous cruises. They were "deep cleaning" the ship. No objection from me, and they continued cleaning all during our cruise; constantly wiping down all handrails, doors, walls, etc. They installed special hand-washing machines at the entrances to each eating venue, and posted personnel to be sure ...

My wife and I are in our mid 40's no kids and have cruise on Princess, NCL, and Royal Caribbean. We both were exited to spend the holiday at sea. I will start with the good then not so much We arrived to the pier at 2 pm anxious to start our journey we went thru screening then to meet the boarding attendant. She advised us the ship was being sanitized due to the Nero virus from the previous ...

Second cruise on the Veendam

Again, a wonderful experience. The Veendam is an older and smaller ship, but well maintained and not crowded at all. We always were able to find a quiet place to relax with NO people. The stateroom, an ocean view, was fine. Wonderful room service. It was kept immaculate, had nice little touches like chocolates on your bed every night, and the food room service was nothing short of excellent, ...

There were some real positives in our experience. The cleaning crew kept everything immaculate and were very nice, our room was comfortable and well designed/very quiet, I had a lovely port excursion and the entertainment-- in the bars as well is in the showroom-- was top notch. They also kept a Nora virus break out under control and immediately helped my mom when she got very sick. But we have ...
