We typically cruise with Carnival, but wanted to do a full transit through the Panama Canal, which Carnival rarely offers. We picked it for the Cruise Destinations, thru the Panama.
Started in San Diego, loved SD, stay at the Sheraton (close to airport and cruise port) and walked around, to Little Italy, the docks, Dinner at the Fish Market.
We love the Jewel, food and service, superb! Clean and not small not huge.

Nice ship, just the right size for this type of cruise. Nice crew. The waiters in the main ding room went out of their way to remember what your favorite food items were. We love Royal and especially Royal sailing in our backyard in San Diego California!
You should know about embarkation - Royal doesn't have their own terminal in California, so they were using another cruise company's facility. My sister and I just completed a five day visit in San Diego and a 15 day Panama Canal cruise on board the Vision of the Seas. The only negative comment I can make is the terrible check in procedure at the San Diego pier. This has to be improved and upgraded to accommodate the travelling public. The check in was long and tedious and very tiring.

My party flew into San Diego, the morning of the cruise and took a taxi from the airport over to the cruise ship terminal area. We arrived around 10:30am walked up, dropped off our luggage and then walked to the North along the pier to have lunch at Anthony's Grotto (my favorite in San Diego - awesome clam chowder).

Check in was the worst of any cruise we had ever done. Despite being a Diamond member with a Jr. Suite, I was sent to the "regular" line and they couldn't do anything fast. They couldn't verify my credit card either and blamed everything on a "new software". They should have got that taken care of.
