My husband has cruised on Princess once before (about 12 years ago) and he really wanted to go with them again. I wanted to be able to drive to the departure port so we chose a 7-day California Coastal, round trip from LA. It was just the two of us ages 45 and 46. Left the kids at home since they don't appreciate cruising (which is fine with me as it's much cheaper that way!). After reading many reviews on the aft balconies, I chose cabin B754 which we loved. We did get some movement when we were out at sea but we found it soothing. I chose Baja deck so we would be neither above or below any public areas and it was nice and quiet. Sometimes we did hear "ship sounds" but nothing that was ever a problem. The cabin was adequate and the balcony was larger than I expected, which was a nice surprise. It had two chairs and a small table. We didn't use it for dining or anything- just sat in the chairs (or more frequently, stood at the railing) and enjoyed the ocean. The shower is miniscule! I understand this is the norm on Princess. We were scheduled to visit San Francisco, Monterey, San Diego, and Ensenada. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit Monterey because the seas were a bit too rough, making tendering unsafe. Too bad able that as that was the port I was most interested in. We left Monterey that morning, spent the night and part of the next morning at Sea, and docked in San Diego half a day early (noon) so we actually overnighted in SD. Overall I loved the ship and the decor (classy- the Piazza I thought was beautiful) although the constant art displays that took up all of Explorer's Lounge on several occasions was a bit much. Does anyone buy art on a cruise? I guess they must or the ships wouldn't keep devoting that much time and space and effort to it. Buffet food was not very flavorful IMO but we very much enjoyed the MDR three nights and chose to try Crown Grill and SHARE on two other nights. Overall very good. SHARE is a more adventurous menu and I loved the decor but it's high up aft and there was a constant vibration and an intermittent high pitched rattle/squeak in the ceiling that really detracted from the experience. Hope they get it fixed soon. Didn't care for the Main Offenders band or the Magic to Do production show but AJ Jamal (guest comedian) was pretty good... especially his bit about the showers on board! All staff with the exception of the young lady in the soft serve ice cream area were friendly. All in all, we were very pleased and we are already looking at another Princess cruise, hopefully to Hawaii this time. Read Less

This was a machine-like roll out of Princess's standard product. It was fine and gave us what we expected. Could it be worse? Definitely... we've been on worse. Could it be better? Most definitely, a little imagination and improved crew motivation and joy could lift the experience. The new Medallion wifi is awesome and well worth paying for unless you are determined to cut the cord to land altogether. We had seen the Production Show before but it was worth a second visit. There is a future cruise specialist on board but you can get the benefit by just filling out a form and dropping it in a box. There are no appointments so if you want to book with the "specialist" you will spend much of your cruise waiting to be seen. I never was able to get the answers that I needed. Eventually, I found the answers obscurely buried in the website. I think, though, that Princess already knows that its sales and marketing operations need a reforming overhaul. Bottom line..... You get what you expect and not much else. Service is delivered as expected but with a dilatory facade. Onboard employees seemed demoralized. Read Less

Wife and I enjoyed a weekend get-a-way on the Ruby Princess this past Valentines Day Weekend. Traveled to Santa Barbara and Ensenada. Although we do love cruising, we will rate this one an average cruise. Not a lot of entertainment, Cruise Director was hardly noticed and the usual outstanding customer service on Princess Cruises was definitely lacking on this trip. Staff had a hard time with their listening skills. On numerous occasions, we had to repeat our questions, as they failed to let us ask a complete question prior to them trying to answer it. Also, a few rude individuals, one on the pizza section, the grill section and the casino change cage. All of these individuals definitely failed with their customer service skills. Positive notes: Food and service was excellent in the club class section as well as the Crooners Bar. Another item of concern is the shape of he newly renovated bathtubs in the mini suites. They have narrowed them so as to become a definite safety issue. Standing upward there is not enough room to keep your feet separated properly, you have to keep them together as you stand. Tough to keep your balance. Sooner or later someone will fall and hurt themselves. Read Less

My hubby booked this cruise to celebrate Valentines Day this year. It was only an hour drive from home so we drove our car and parked at the cruise port. The parking fee was $18.00 a day so it's about a break even for an Uber from our house. It was easy to park and dropping off our bags was in front of the terminal was super easy too. We were on the ship and in our room with in 30 min or so. Our room was very nice but a little on the small side for a Premium balcony room on the very back of the ship. Only one small chair and no sofa bed like we have had on other Princess ships. The bed was super comfortable and our room steward Gerry was awesome. This was our 4th cruise with Princess and our first time on the Ruby. Here is a list of pros and cons: Pros Comfy bed and bedding Great service though out the ship Nice clean ship Good Food Great Comedian Nice gym Cons Up charging every where we went, even in the Main dining room No prices on beverage menu in dining room No free specialty restaurants like on some of the other Princess ships ( Alfredo's and English pub) Lots of for fee options like specialty restaurants, menu items in Main dining room, Salty Dog cafe, wine tastings, bottled water..... I felt like they had many changes since my cruise in December last year. No Lobster offered on this cruise, they had Alfredo's Italian Cafe on other ships with no fee and the English Pub that served great British fare with out an extra fee, they had for fee items on the main menu that I thought was strange from the Crown Grill, they were selling smoothies for a fee in the main dining room at breakfast, fee for the Thermal spa which is nice but small $ 149.00 for two. ( we did enjoy it). Read Less

The Ports of calls, is what really got my attention. The ship was made a little different some floors you could not go from forward to aft. The cabin was a decent size, but the shower was awfully small. The food in the buffet dining room was always cold and was not pleasing, pancakes was super hard, I ate a lot at the Salty Dog.. The entertainment in the theater was okay, I would give it a 7 out of 10. The movies was nothing recently made. Television in the room mainly showed live broadcasting such as CNN or news channels. At late night it would be nice to have a movie channel. Activities on the Ruby was good, it was always something going on.The service was excellent, no complaints at all the staff was super friendly and always there to help. the ports as I stated was awesome, excursions was great, there was enough time spent and the ports, so I did not feel rushed. Yes I would go again, Food could stand to be improved greatly. Read Less

It was our first cruise, and did we get lucky choosing Princess. If you don't have a magnificent time on a cruise with Princess,it's your own fault, for sure, period! We were amazed by the size of the ship, and how all the passengers were accommodated so well. What a friendly, knowledgeable, professional beyond belief staff! It didn't matter what employee it was,as they all were gracious, and gave you a smile. The entertainment was extraordinary. We never expected that many shows,by amazing talent,on one cruise! Whether it was singing, dancing, comedy, magic acts,or whatever, it was all top notch! The Ruby Princess Orchestra,is phenomenal. The arrangements with the headliners, and the cruise directors staff, were incredible. The super voices of singers Lou Gazzara, and Mark Morgan, were jaw dropping. The comedy, and guitar playing of Mr. Steve Moris, was astounding. The music, the food, the cocktails,no matter where you were on the vessel, was amazing. My next cruise will definitely be with Princess again,as it definitely enhanced our lives.....Thank You Princess, and staff. Read Less

Having done quite a few princess cruises, the Ruby is one of our favorite ships. The size is perfect; the large theatre can hold everyone if they do two shows ( which they typically do). The shows were spectacular-from the dancers and singer to the comedian and Magician. Amazing employees that act like they really like their jobs. The food was excellent in the dining room. We never felt rushed. There are spots all over the ship that you can be alone outside your cabin. We love the grill topside. We run thru the buffet at lunch a load up greens; then have them grill a chicken breast for on top (resisting the fries of course). International cafe was a little crowded this cruise ( I think it was because of their new coffee card system). There seemed to be a line often and I don’t do lines! Love love love this ship. We already have booked another in February. Read Less

Ship left out of Seattle which is convenient for us. We've done Alaska 10 times and wanted something different. This itinerary fit the bill. Ports of call were interesting and I adore the Ruby Princess. My only complaint is that food quality seems to be less impressive than in previous years. Deserts and appetizers were wonderful, but on two nights the entrees were merely OK. My waiters offered different entrees, and did everything they could to make it right. I was OK with it as I am not a "foodie" and am happy with any meal as long as I don't need to cook and clean! If you are a "foodie", then I would suggest eating in the specialty restaurants (the Crown Grill is always great!). Easiest embarkation and disembarkation I have ever had! Entertainment was excellent as well. The production shows "Once upon a dream" , "Magic to do" and "Colors of the world" were entertaining. The magician, comedian, and singers were great as well. Movies under the stars was a bit disappointing just because it was too cold, despite staff bringing me 4 (yes 4!) blankets. Opted to do shore excursions on our own, so cannot speak to those. Can't wait to be back on the Ruby again in April! Read Less

This was my 1st Princess Cruise, NOT impressed! Ship was older but nice for the most part. Cabin was okay but they could have steam cleaned or replaced the very large stain in carpet. Wasn't prepared for the everyday long lines for food/dining. They ran out of food and alcohol, who does that? Once night in dining room, server was cutting my lobster out of shell and knocked it onto the table, all he did was picked it up and placed it on my plate. It took so long one night to receive our dinner our other 4 dining companions were almost finished with their meal. At the buffet, it took forever to get tables wiped down and to receive place settings/drinks. The Staff was not real friendly or apologetic, acted as though we were bothering them. Our cabin steward was the worst, had to ask several times for items we should have had in the first place, also not apologetic, I actually hated to see him coming. Ports were excellent except Ensenada, didn't feel safe there. I remember when passengers tipped for services rendered; stewards use to trip over themselves to help, now since the tip is taken off the top, they give less than a hoot because they know they're getting the STANDARD tip no matter what, such a ripoff! Bathroom Shower did not drain Shower leaked – had to put towels on floor daily to catch water from running on floor Only one AC wall plus marked for “shaver only” Wall plug would not accept standard American plug of my water pic. We requested extension cord and were told we had to “pre-order” one. We had to brush our teeth in the wet bar sink Dead flower for four days in bathroom Balcony If this ship was refurbished in 2015 why was there: Rust and paint peeling on balcony ceiling (see picture) Sea gull deposits on furniture (see picture) Asked cabin steward to notify cabin next door balcony light had been left on for five days – no action taken. Concerts On Movies Under The Stars – False Advertising “Located on the ship's top deck, Princess makes this experience even more special with personal touches including comfortable chaise lounges, complimentary popcorn, warm cookies & milk and cozy blankets in the evening.” Sam Smith Concert I was so looking forward to this concert as I am a big fan of Sam Smith. Arrived at 5:00pm – asked for a blanket. I was told they would be passed out at 5:30pm. No blankets passed out (had to use beach towels) - no popcorn, warm cookies & milk Sound was not turned on until 15 minutes after concert started. Distractions During Concert Three staff members behind us putting away dirty beach towels talking, singing and dancing during concert Staff pushing squeaky cart around pool area during concert Staff pushing squeaky cart setting up lounge cushions during concert Kids jumping on benches and screaming Piazza Once you have sandwich, salad, etc., in hand where do you sit? Tables were taken over by passengers who were playing card games, dominos, etc. Walking around trying to find a table was ridiculous. Passengers should not be allowed to sit for hours on end when tables are scarce especially during the lunch hour. Celebrations A disappointment finding our balloons on the floor of our cabin after one day. We were told they had to be removed for safety reasons. While travelling other cruise lines our balloons were left out the duration of the trip. Anniversary poster on our cabin door was generic. My husband added our names to it for a personal touch. A letter was written to their Post Cruise Customer Relations on November 20, 2017 outlining in detail our true disappontment. I have never had the courtesy of a reply to my letter. Never will I cruise on Princess. We are not new to cruising as having cruised on Carnival, Cunard and Holland America. It is heartbreaking to have spent over $5,000 for one of the worst cruises we have ever experienced. Read Less

We so enjoyed this cruise and chose it because LAX is an hour away from PHX. Chance to visit Monterey Bay Aquarium and to visit a client in Sausalito were major reasons we chose this cruise. Thought Princess did a great job for the price. Total for us: $2308. Free Gratuities. Free Balcony Upgrade. $550 credit (Cru-Con, Princess, Military). Where else can you enjoy 21 meals (and yes, maybe food isn't as great as it used to be, but over 12,000 meals are prepared daily; plus 24/7 in International Cafe), 7 days in a cabin that is freshened 2X daily, chocolates on your pillow, live entertainment all over the ship, recent movies, fun games, fabulous interview with Lainie Kazan and more. And, of course, transportation from LA to San Fran to Monterey to San Diego to Ensenada to LA. We also paid far more for glasses of wine and mixed drinks and meals in Phoenix, San Fran and San Diego. Also Princess crew was courteous and greeted us throughout the ship. Think about this, too. Crew members work 10-12 hours per day, 7 days a week for 7-9 months. Embarkation and Debarkation were very organized and went smoothly. Only negative was muster drill. We were standing in front of Crown Grill for about 30 minutes It was hot and stuffy. One passenger fainted. Other than that, we are pleased with Princess and have 3 more Princess cruises coming up. Read Less

We love California and getting to cruise the California Coast is amazing!!! San Francisco is magical. Loved all the ports. Seas were very calm. Embarkation was a little crazy as there were long lines to drop off your luggage. Once this was accomplished it was all great! Loved the ship and the food was good. Wish the breakfast in the diningroom hours were a tad longer. My biggest complaint is that most people today really need their phones or the internet to stay connected. Prices were outrageous and should be brought down so that it is affordable. Carnival has a social package whereby if this is all you are looking for, it is affordable. Princess should be able to get something in line with this. Debarkation went smoothly and all in all, we really enjoyed the cruise immensely. Will defintely look forward to our next Princess Cruise and hope to do the Calfornia Coast again. Read Less

This was my first cruise so my opinion may need to be taken with a grain of salt. The ship seemed well maintained, common areas neat and clean. I had been warned to expect a tiny cabin but IMHO the cabin (with balcony) size was fine for my wife and I, clean and comfortable. Bathroom was dated, chips in the sink, slow shower drain. Onboard entertainment was lacking. There were so many missed marketing oppertunities for Princess. For instance, people don’t like playing games for fun, give a prize to the winner, even if it’s cheap cruise line merch. You get something for winning and the business gets some advertisement. Being a gym rat, this area of the ship (or any vacation spot) is always an area of a concern for me. Princess did not disappoint! The fitness facility had everything needed to get in a complete workout, plenty of ellipticals and treadmills, weight machines all well maintained, plenty of free weights and a very nice “studio” area. The hot tubs were warm at best and the jets were not working on any, the only negative about this area. And now for the worst of it, the food. I realize the masses must be catered to but I have NEVER eaten so much bland tasteless food in all my life! I know they need to make a profit but cutting back on spices and seasonings is the wrong place to do so. Apple pie should taste like apples not mystery goop with only a hint of cinnamon. I won’t even comment on what they called pizza and soft serve is NOT ice cream! Would do t kill you to serve regular hard packed ice cream? Service in the formal dinning room was slow on all 3 nights, one of which we waited 20 minutes just to get water. Courses were served to the entire section at the same time. It didn’t matter if you orderd 10 minutes before another party in your section arrived. The servers waited until the entire section had ordered. Again the same problem with the buffet hampered the formal dining room, bland food. Mind you everything was prepared properly, nothing over or under cooked but it all had NO flavor. I was hoping the speciality restaurants would be different, alas I was disappointed here as well. Service was slow even when there were all of 6 tables seated. Everything was cooked properly but it was all bland. All throughout the cruise I kept getting the feeling the wait staff, bartenders, baristas, etc were looking at the passengers with much disdain. I honestly believe after serving us they were walking away thinking to themselves “Explictative! Americans!” Mind you we were treated properly, this was just a feeling we got. As the cruise wore on the staff seemed more and more annoyed simply by our presence. One morning our steward was most annoyed we were still in our room at 8:30. Another was annoyed to have to move so we could pass him in the hall. Words cannot describe how rude the barista at the 24 hour coffee bar was. Disembarkment was a complete and total cluster. It was clearly printed on the daily letter to meet at 8:45. Much to our surprise when arriving in the theater at 8:30 we discovered our group had already left the ship. Apparently the 8:45 meeeting time was the time our bus was leaving for LAX. All in all I feel the cruise was nice, nice enough to make me want to cruise again........on a different cruise line. We chose this cruise for a get-a-way and to celebrate our anniversary. We also upgraded to Club Class for the amenities and the prime location of the mini-suite. The primary amenity we wanted was the no waiting for dinner and breakfast in the MDR. We aren't big fans of the crowds in the buffet lines. The Da Vinci MDR had a separate area designated for CC. It had a clearly marked entrance for CC and the tables had different color table cloths. That was it. Nothing special. Every time we dined in CC we were quickly greeted and seated at a table that became our table for the cruise. As a result we had the same servers and the service was excellent. Although the menu was the same as the MDR every night there was something special that only appeared on the CC menu. The only con was the Princess dress code was not enforced in the MDR. We observed men wearing "wife beater" t-shirts and ball caps and woman wearing sweat-shirts with a college logo. Were told by the maitre d that on 4 & 5 day cruises out of LA the code was hard to enforce. I guess we had different expectations. As for the amenities, Embarkation was fast. With priority, we were in our cabin in about 40 minutes and at lunch in the MDR in about an hour. Tender priority was not needed since there were no lines we we left the ship in SB. Disembarkation was another story. No apparent priority since our tags/times had us meeting at 1040 AM. I had them changed to 0830 AM. I was told the only "priority" we had was meeting in the "Platinum" Lounge (Club Fusion) where they had coffee/tea and pastries. We didn't book any excursions from the ship. We learned from previous cruises, that with a little research you can find just about the same excursions offered by the ship and a lower price. You also aren't jammed on a 45 passenger bus. We did wine tasting in the Santa Barbara "Funk Zone". Basically, a walking tour with stops at local winery tasting rooms. We also hired a guide through "Tours By Locals" for a Baja winery tour in the Guadalupe Valley. Again, no big bus and we custom tailored where we wanted to go. Next time we will book directly with Fernando our tour guide at www.toursinbaja.com.mx Read Less

Had not taken a Princess cruise in 14 years. We chose this cruise for the different itinerary, and because we live in Orange County, CA we didn't ned to fly. Embarkation was very efficient, and we were on the ship within 1 hour of arriving at the port. First impressions...the ship was very clean, the staff smiling, and seemed genuinely happy to see us...except one...more on that later. Our cabin was ready when we got aboard, so we dropped our carry ons and went where??, why to start our week of eating with lunch. Oh...wait had to go to the bar and get the first dirnk...then lunch. The AIBP worked very well, it was nice to not have to worry about my bar tab all week. The buffet was busy, but not crowded. The food was good and plentiful, and the staff were ready to bring drinks almost as soon as you sat down. If the buffet area is crowded, there is a seating area just aft of the buffet by the Terrace Pool. We had an outside cabin on Emerald deck, it was fine space wise and had plenty of storage for the 2 of us. Some people say that if things are the same as when you cruised the line many years ago, then there must be something wrong. I disagree, I have certain expectations of a cruise, and Princess ticked off each and every one! The MDR food was good, the staff was wonderful, and I felt spoiled for the week. There were some small service issues, but they did not, in my opinion truly affect my enjoyment. The one person that I had issue with was a female server in the International Cafe that never smiled, and was more interested in talking to her co-workers than serving guests. The only other gripe I had was with my room steward, that never bothered to fill the ice bucket and waited until two days into the cruise to bring my sailaway snacks, and our robes. WE took this cruise for my DW's birthday, and Princess made a big deal out of it!! She got a card from the Captain and got a gift certificate for the shops and the spa. I have cruised with Princess, NCL, and RCI and have to say that this was as close to a perfect cruise as I have had in 14 cruises!! Thanks Princess! Read Less

We chose this cruise because I wanted to try princess cruise lines… I'll start with the pros and end with The not so kind cons ... The embarkation and debarkation we're very fast and simple… The crew was exceptional, And the colors of the world show, and the magic musical we're good… and that's where the pros end... Cons… Yes this was a four night cruise I and many others felt penalized for being on a short cruise… Steve White the comedian was anything but funny… I am far from a racist but after the 15th time he felt he needed to explain to everyone that was not a black joke or as he put it you didn't expect to see a Negro with the name White, it got to the point where you felt he didn't want to be there… If that is his schtict he needs to find another way to try to make people laugh, because he certainly didn't make anybody laugh that Night ...He did tell one joke but actually screamed at the audience for most of the show… It was a terrible way as a first impression for princess ...The food was almost inedible... we started with a buffet when we came on ship and couldn't find anywhere to sit, no big problem… When dinner rolls around 1 course was as bad as the next… On the very last night you would think they would go out of the way to make an impression, wrong! I had the surf and turf and the New York strip which was ordered medium rare . I could not even cut it and had to send it back and got something else… this was basically every meal and extremely disappointing… The pizza by the pool was the best thing on the ship and I'm from Chicago and like my thick pizza ... this was a good thin pizza… My wife and I could not wait for this trip to end… At LAX others were talking about how bad the food was so I know I was not in the minority… One gentleman even spoke to the food and beverage manager and he said That this cruise's food was not up to par… I am really disappointed to the point where even if princess offered credit for another cruise I would be tempted to decline their offer ... We took short tours on all of the cities except in San Diego. Our nephew met us in San Diego and took us to Little Italy. In Ensenada we went on a short wine tour. It was very informative. After we had time to stop for lunch at a nice cafe. We also bought some tequila at a local liquor store. We were able to taste some samples there. We always do the open dining. All our meals were great. Service was excellent every night. The mornings we docked we would order a continental breakfast so we could get to shore as soon as possible. We had a balcony room. I found most of the staff to be great and the food ranged between acceptable and good depending on the day. I was not impressed to find two extra beds attached to the walls in our already tight interior stateroom (this was not mentioned anywhere during booking or thereafter). As a young couple, we found the entertainment to be lacking as it catered to the older crowd. This ship's passengers were predominantly retired, 70+ passengers. I guess that is the norm with cruising, but on a 7-day cruise we hoped for a better mix of passengers. I was pleased with the decor on the ship, it is quite nice. I don't mind the odd leak here and there as long as it isn't posing a threat (or in my stateroom!) Ensenada, Mexico did not have much to offer. I would recommend foregoing the mandatory daily tip (you can opt out) and tipping the staff yourself. For example, if you eat mostly in the buffet, you're not getting as much service as the folks in the dining room. With that being said, the food in the dining room was great but each meal was a 2-hour experience so we mostly avoided it. They add 15% extra tip on top of all bar tabs also, so where is the $11.50 USD per day really going? I'd rather have more say in who deserves it (90% of the staff were fantastic, especially our cabin steward). Read Less

Wanted a local cruise along the CA coast. Enjoyed stopping at San Francisco and walking along the wharf Santa Barbara was another good walking port of call, charming city The food in the main dining room was excellent each and every night Our table partners were from Hawaii which made for some great conversations We tried the free ice cream on the upper deck, not great but still nice to have The bratwurst though was very good and a great snack, especially when sitting looking out over the ocean. Our room was always cleaned and squared away yet we never saw anybody, ghosts? We could not believe how full the ship was, especially for a November local cruise The staff that we interacted with were always polite and friendly, our dining staff were great. The dining room was very clean with beautiful decor and table settings. We plan on taking another coastal cruise after our cruise to Hawaii. Read Less
