Having had a brilliant cruise on Navigator last year, we booked to do the same itinerary with friends from Scotland. Our 19th cruise - and 8th with R.C. but what a huge disappointment - so much has changed. The admin staff were 'polite' to the point of rudeness. The ship was tired and dull - downright grubby in places. Mirrors in dining room had a film of grease over them. No real sparkle to this ship. It may be going in for refit - but there was no excuse for poor cleaning. All the luxury elements were missing, no flowers on dining room table - in fact no diners!! Our complete section had empty tables around us - the food was tepid, insipid and uninspiring. Waiting staff were excellent - doing their best under the circumstances. The head chef spent more time apologising to guests than he did in the kitchen. Conclusion - they were trying to get you to spend more in the speciality dining ! Forget the windjammer - crammed to capacity due to guests not using dining room. Our jnr suite - excellent space - but we had to ask for the floor to be cleaned in the second week - no sign of a hoover and carpet getting thicker every day. Glass tables in bars were grubby. Drinks waiters friendly - but then they were getting regular tips to remember us. The changed the itinerary dropping Genoa before we even sailed - due to overcrowding - did they not book their slot over a year ago?? the replacement port was skipped due to the non-appearing Hurricane. Lisbon was skipped - and they substituted it with an overnight stay in Le Havre. Of all the ports they could have gone to why this ferry port with nothing of interest?? They did not even lay on shuttle buses to get to town. Over 3,000 people on board, many old and challenged - the queue for the port bus was over one hour long. the 25 minute walk - was more like 40 mins. They did manage however to book coaches for an overpriced trip into Paris. They even took coaches to Rouen for a trip - WHY French health official had declared the place an health issue due to huge chemical fire. Toxic soot on everything, questions over air quality and a ban on eating fruit and veg grown there and the milk had to be thrown away - yet RC thought it would be a great idea to take people to visit it. How desperate for profit was that. Very poor entertainment Cleary they are floundering in the expanding cruise market and have lost their edge. Our worst cruise out of 19 others !! Very poor value for money and disappointing to say the least -- Royal Caribbean dont even bother responding to correspondence outlining issues. Staff refused to provide a letter for insurance company stating port missed and the reason. Read Less

Second cruise with RC, first one was on the Navigator (pre refurbishment) and that was so much better, as my wife is in a wheelchair there were many issues that we feel should be addressed:- -Lack of unisex accessible toilets, only one on deck 12, or its back to your room. - Great idea to put a piano in a lift at peak times which in effect made lift unusable, and yes they put a piano in a lift.....great idea that was - Sun beds rammed in side by side with no access from the sides unless you spend 30 mins dragging other ones out of the way - Apart from deck 4, there were no Sun lounges available - State rooms were shabby and need updating - The so called multi million pound refurbishment was obviously not spent on interior decoration - Windjammer menus seemed to repeated every other day and food was on many occasions cold - It was like a treasure hunt most days in the Windjammer to find the vegetables, which again were cold - On the other extreme you would get second degree burns from the utensils that were kept under the lamps In summary, RC seems to be focusing on quantity and not quality, can we please have the ship's back as they were..... We have sailed several times with the royal carribean and normally I love my cruise - however the last cruise I had in August, will sadly probably be the last cruise I choose with Royal Carribean - the staff as always were perfect and could not do enough to make our holiday special - however we had an unbelievable number of teens on our cruise who congregated each evening in level 8 - my floor - particularly near the lift area - so I was constantly feeling intimidated each time I used the lift - so much so that I opted to use the stairs - I had teens running up and down corridors late at night and once it was as late as 3.30 am - I did ring security on several occasions and in all fairness they came and solved the problem ...on that night - but it would be exactly the same on every night - annoyingly even on the last night they woke me at 1am - and as I was leaving the ship just after 7am to drive hundreds of miles I wasn’t happy at all - there was no monitoring of the corridors at all - I understand the shop is due for a refurb - which had I known I would probably have booked another ship as it looked tatty and needing paintwork in several places The food as always was incredible plenty of choice and fantastic On our return I did email customer services re our noisy holiday and was told I should have rang reception - which I did - no other help whatsoever - they didn’t seem interested whatsoever that I had saved all year for a holiday to be disturbed every single night and reluctant to use the lifts I personally will prob not ever be booking with RC again - not just because it was simply too noisy (I do have four children if my own so I am not anti children) but also the attitude I had from customer services Sadly it falls far short of the holiday I saved hard for - I love cruise ships so i’ll prob try another company next year Read Less

Where do I begin .... or should I just say wow I'm glad i'm off this ship. We have sailed with many companies down the years including Royal Caribbean and always had wonderful experiences with excellent ports of call, lovely fellow passengers and fantastic service. However, we have never sailed from a UK port in the height of the holiday season and I have to say we will NEVER do this again. I really do not have words to use to describe this latest experience but disastrous might be the best expression. What happened to manners, courtesy, politeness and general awareness amongst the British public. It is obviously a lost art. The clientele that Royal Caribbean are obviously trying to attract on this ship is not what you would expect on a cruise ship. During out 14 day cruise we had numerous families removed from the ship at various ports, fighting in the lifts which caused the lifts to be closed to clean up the blood, numerous random acts of nudity, severe drunken behaviour and one incident of a youth being detained in the ships cells for the last 2 days of the cruise. Even our comedian commented that the price of cruising has obviously gone down due to the clientele on board. People would stampede into the lifts before allowing anyone to get out and the entire ship just became survival of the fittest. Even on quiet day when there was an abundance of sunbeds available there were certain families from the North West of England who would hover around the consierge sunbed area and wait for the deck patrol members to walk away before charging on mass into the area to occupy as many sunbeds as possible then argue and refuse to move when advised they were not allowed to stay there due to the fact they had not paid for this service. It was all about taking as many 'selfies' as possible in this area for bragging rights when they got home. They constantly threatened the staff that if any of their property was removed they would claim against the company for theft and damage so the staff just gave up. This was the general attitude around the ship so in the end most of the service staff just gave up due to the way they were being treated and the whole ship just ended up looking dirty and untidy with plates, glasses and food left lying around all day. It was a real shame for the genuine passengers on board who had manners and thoughtfulness and polite children with manners. The other major problem on board is that this ship has been refitted to accommodate a further 500 passengers without any increase in facilities or deck space. This just makes the whole ship tight for room and again the waiting staff in the dining rooms had to pass food over tables, aisles and squeeze between tables like i have never seen before. Our ports of call were very good and we did enjoy getting away from the football style hooligans on board for the long days in port. Embarkation and disembarkation was always smooth and swift even if we always avoided the thought of getting back on board fr as long as possible. So to sum up if you want to feel like you are on a cheap holiday camp with rude and obnoxious passengers who think the world owes them a living then spend 14 days aboard this cruise from hell. If not I would suggest you sail with another cruise company out of any port that is not in the UK. We, and many other passengers we spoke to, will never sail on this cruise ship again from Southampton in the summer holidays. Read Less

Ahhh this is so disappointing for us to have to write a bad review but it seems to follow a current trend of recent Indy reviews and we felt this would be useful for other young couples thinking of booking. We have raised our issues with RCI and are awaiting a response to their thoughts on the matter. Bit of background, this is my 5th cruise (2nd with RCI, last cruise being with them and was 4/5 years ago) and this was my partners 1st cruise, and 1st holiday in 13 years so needless to say we were both very excited for this and had high hopes. We are both young and wanted to get away for a while, saw the itinerary for Italian Med and jumped at the chance to go. We went big, drunks package, excursions, balcony room etc as we wanted the best experience we would get and not have to worry about money or other costs. On that last note, 'other costs'. RC seem to love charging you for everything. They are like the EA of cruises. Room service, $8, 2 coke's with your room service order, $8 ( I am not kidding it was $8 for 2 cans of coke), go to Jonny Rockets, just under $10 a head, fish & ships, playmakers etc, charges for any food. If you do not want to spend anything extra THIS IS NOT THE CRUISE LINER FOR YOU as you will not enjoy it as much! Then of course the specialty restaurants which are standard across most big liners. For the length of the cruise we were not able to get a seat at any bar after dinner (8.30pm sitting), or in any of the shows/productions etc either which meant we had to stand for hours or retire back to our room at about 11pm/12am every night as we were fed up with how busy it was. We missed out on some exciting shows like Grease, as if we were able to get a seat during the evening we were stuck there otherwise we would loose it, leaving most of the content of the of the cruise compass obsolete for us. No matter what time we went to the windjammer or on what day, we would have to do numerous laps to find a table (we are only a party of 2) which I have never seen before on any cruise liner. When we managed to get a seat, it was only to have sub par overcooked food that wasn't worth the wait. Sun loungers are like gold dust, no matter where we went. One morning we got up at 7.45am to go and get a lounger in a good spot only to find EVERY SINGLE ONE on the boat had been 'reserved' ie there were personal belongings or towels on the beds even though there was an apparent strict 'no reserving' policy enforced which we never saw being implemented once. When you are unable to get a sun lounger on a sea day, or get a table in the windjammer for lunch there is very little to do during the day for a young couple that just wish to relax. We booked 4 excursions, all of which were a total waste of time and money. In Gibraltar we waited for 45 minutes in 30 degree sun for the bus to decide to pick us up after the meeting time, and spend a further 45 in traffic which resulted in being burnt. In Pisa for Portovenre this was not as described, being a public use boat for 45 minutes that was over-packed to reach the town with rude locals and other tourists and a lengthy walk with a group of people should have been advised this is not accessible for wheelchairs etc and lots of lines and waiting. When waiting for the above as well as 2 other excursions, none of the coaches were ready so we were called to leave the ship only to wait beside the boat for 20/30 minutes for our coach to turn up and for us to get on which is a small thing but makes a massive impact on how we enjoyed the excursions. When it came to our last one, Pompeii, we didn't even want to go as we were that fed up and disappointed with the last 3 all being a total disaster. To top it all off, I had food poisoning the 2nd last night of the cruise, and was confined to my room from the night of day 13, through the whole day of day 14 unable to eat or drink along with a lot of other travelers that dined in the main dining room so a great way to end things. Most of the staff were brilliant, especially in the dining room so this managed to salvage our overall experience for the 2 weeks. It's clear they have not adjusted the social spaces since the refurb as there is just not enough space for everyone to really enjoy themselves. This would probably be a more enjoyable cruise for children and couples with children as it seems well catered for them so this would be our bad for booking this liner as a nice relaxing getaway but live and learn. There have been rumors of Indy trying to extort the UK market this season before it repositions over to the Carribbean where it will then sail from, and sadly I would believe this. The spa, art and gym staff all were very pushy to make an extra sale which rivaled with the looky looky men plaguing Rome. Most public areas were not cleaned, we saw plasters next to pools for a few days and dirty table cloths not being changed with a thick layer of dust in lost of common areas. We will in the future look to try RC again, but definitely not this ship. As I said, this is our experience and others have had a good time so I am in no way trying to say avoid, but please think carefully about the party you are traveling and what you are looking for with your holiday before booking on this ship. My wife and I chose this Canaries cruise with Royal Caribbean for my birthday, having cruised with them 11 times previously, but I'm sorry to say this may well be our last. Please don't take me wrong, neither of us are snobs or whingers, and I've never had a bad word for R.C, but this cruise has left us both a little cold. Embarcation: Long standing queues, no usual welcoming tipple. Stateroom: No coffee, No tea, 2 tiny long life milk tubs, no spare loo roll despite asking, which ran out on day 3 and had to use the box of tissues, sticky cabin floor and stained carpets, Fridge totally inoperative, and the stateroom felt tired and abused - stayed in better 2* hotels!...... oh, and the bottle of bubbly my missus had preordered and paid for NEVER arrived, although we got a spa discount instead, which ended up costing us more money AND the 'hard sell' of 'Buy these products we've used on you for an extra hundred and something dollars' only to be subjected to the 'face like chewing a wasp' when we declined. The room Steward was a friendly guy though, trying his best through adversity, and an obviously too heavy workload. At this stage, we went down and requested the $29 dollar per day tips removed from our cruise account..... everything seems now to be geared around tipping, even though we mainly used Speciality Restaurants (and paid extra), and the Windjammer self service, (we only used the main restaurant twice) and every time we had a drink there was already a service charge added to the bill! I'll always tip for over and above service, but this was cr*p! although we did tip our Steward in cash at the end as we usually do. The poor staff are obsessed with feedback.... even the photographer who expected me to get up and pose for a paid photo HALF WAY THROUGH MY DINNER! Main Restaurant: Food OK, although only word to describe it would be 'rushed' so used only twice. Speciality Restaurants: Hey! a good word at last I hear you cry! Both Chops Grille, and Giovanni's excellent, both food and staff Johnny Rocket's : 10 minute wait in outside part with no staff show, so finally went inside and ordered...... only 4 other people present, so no rush then! Shows: Ice show a spectacular triumph, greatly talented performers. Disembarcation: Self carry-off was a farce at 6am......... no staff present, and queue where you like standing for 20 minutes, even in front of lifts, gangways and stairs.... very safe I'm sure -NOT! Saving grace..... met some lovely people. Sorry to say this may well be our last R.C Cruise, the downhill slide is now very 'In Your Face' , and with all the expected extras, Cruise Lines not paying their staff a living wage and declining staff levels, the sad fact is I bet we're not the only ones. Rant over! bet you didn't guess I'm a bit disillusioned! Read Less

We chose this cruise last September, 2017, to fit in with our kids school holidays and to celebrate our 55th Wedding Anniversary we took all l7 of our family for a memorable trip instead of a party. We had nothing but agravation from beginning to end. Firstly we used Cruise Kings, who were the worst company to deal with, incompetence, useless, and difficult from the very beginning, they did not listen to our requests re cabins etc., and the more we spoke to them about bed configurations the more confused they got. We asked for cabins on one day, keeping in mind we booked a year ago, and they gave us cabins from deck 2 to deck, so we were all over the place, we argument of argument, but got nowhere. That was our first gripe. Now on to the Indepence of the Seas, we chose this ship because our grandchildren range in age from 7 to 28, and this ship seemed to have something for everybody, we have been on 30 cruises, and know the ropes by now. The cabins were minute in some cases, one daughter had to climb over a sofa bed to get out of the cabin this was a hazard had there have been an emergency. Our cabin steward on deck 8 was worse than useless, there were 4 people in our cabin, and every day we had to ask for 4 towels, 4 face flannels etc., very poor show. Now to the restaurant arrangements and food. We asked at the time of booking for two large tables next to one another, on the first night having arrived at the restaurant for dinner we were told that we had been split into 3 tables, in all different parts of the dining room, of course they was argument, and after half an hour they managed to find two table immediately next to one another. We sat down, ordered our food, and when it arrived some 40 minutes later, the food was inedable, and the goats cheese was off, the rest of the food was dried up and tasteless and very poorly presented. We complained and were assured that the next night it would be better. The second night was a formal night so we were all dressed up and had intended have some photos taken, but our dismay we ordered our food, the first course was stale, and had to be sent back. One of the grandchildren asked for a piece of salmon, and was told by the waitress that there was non available. Eventually after my grandson ending up in tears because he was hungry, the salmon arrived, my daughter cut it up for him and to her horror it was raw inside I hate to think what might have happened had he have eaten it. My eldest grandaughter was served with a meal with a bar code label stuck on it, everything was cold, the service was apalling, and two of us had to wait for an hour for our meal to be served which when it arrived was inedable, we entered the dining room at 8.30 and did not leave until 10.30, my grandsons piece of salmon arrived some 45 minutes after ordering it. The Chef came out and the hotel manager, and maitre D, and when we questioned the Chef about the health risks, he did have an answer, and so it went on. The last night was an improvement as they pulled out all stops to try to make things better, but it was too little too late. My Husband and I were terribly distressed over the whole matter and instead of being a great celebration it was a great aggravation. Never will we cruise with Royal Caribbean again, avoid them at all costs, it was like Butlins on Sea. Very disgruntled passengers, oh and by the way they offered us 5% off another cruise what an insult having ruined what should have been a lovely and enjoyable celebration. Read Less

after being on allure and anthem for previous cruises, independance was a true downgrade. We were so excited to experience Indy but didn’t realise what a difference the class of ship would mean. The teenagers took over hot tubs, drunk and swearing, groups loitering by stairwells, charging phones in hallways and being loud and intimidating. 6-8 yr old kids club was put in with 9-11 year olds which didn’t work at all. New trampolines are good, water slides and kids splashaway bay is excellent. Unfortunately staff don’t allow you to change pools, if you set up on a lounger and decide to walk be in there for more than 30 mins or hi to the hot tub or the other area 20 steps away they take your stuff and give it to customer services. When you have kids they don’t want to be in the 1 pool, they change pools and comecand get to the loungers. Apparently this isn’t allowed. 30 mins of no returns means your things are taken to customer service. False nails of last guest found on carpet of grand suite. Bar tenders refusing to give more than 2 bottles of water at the same time. Annoying when 4 Of u want a bottle of water. Had to get my husband to come and get another 2 as they wouldn’t serve me. It just keeps getting worse. I’ve been on 2 cruises before, all with Royal Caribbean and I thought they were ok but this year was bad. - Embarkation was smooth. - Breakfast was the same every morning ( sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs etc) I wish there were more healthy options. - Lunch was good, more varieties and new things every day - Dinner and service was good apart from Steak. I ate lots of steaks in different places and I know what medium rare means. These steaks were raw. Four of us ordered and they were all raw. Definitely go for medium well instead. - The stateroom attendant was friendly - The shows were not so good compared to Independence. There was a very good comedian in the first night. On the last night there was a different comedian which wasn’t that good. Some of his jokes were word by word the same as some of the first comedian which was painful to watch. - The cruise director was ok but not very involved. - The ports weren’t very good. Le Havre is too far from Paris so took an excursion to Deauville and Honfleur which were really beautiful. Portugal was ok but not as nice as France. Vigo was a waste of time - The next cruise discounts on board were terrible. Basically 40 dollars off a oceanview stateroom and 165 dollars deposit per person which was not refundable if cancelled. Overall there wasn’t anything wow but just ok. I don’t think it was worth the money. Once I got to airport I realised I forgot my brand new suit and 2 ties in the stateroom. I know it was my fault but there was 0 help with that. Once they take your money they don’t care anymore. That is definitely my last cruise with them and will start trying out other cruise lines. We have cruised on Independence of the Seas on a number of occasions and are Diamond level members of the Crown and Anchor Society loyalty programme. Previously we have always been satisfied with the experience but this cruise was very disappointing. The ship has just had a major refit and we have seen it described as “enhancing the family activity”. To us the result was most unsatisfactory. It was quite clear that RCCL has acted to increase revenue stream by increasing passenger capacity without being able to increase the basic passenger facilities. The ship was therefore very overcrowded and uncomfortable. On sea days there was a considerable shortage of sun loungers with passengers spending long periods of time trying to find somewhere to sit. Heard a rumour that RCCL were considering adopting a policy whereby they require that two passengers should share each lounger. ( not sure whether this would be at the same time, or in shifts). The lounge space for Diamond and Diamond plus members of the loyalty club has been reduced by more than 50% and now consists of one very crowded area containing 55 seats. As there were said to be more than 750 Diamond level members on board it was not possible to use the lounge without extreme discomfort. Less than 30% of the passengers paid any heed to the concept of "Formal Night". It is well past the time when RCCL should either require passengers to stick by the rules or they should abandon the concept of formal night. As yet, the staff on board are maintaining a high level of service under extreme difficulty. It is however clear that they realise that they are being dragged down by the deteriorating circumstances on board. It can only be a matter of time before they break. We have been on this ship a number of times before but there is little chance that we will repeat the experience again. Read Less

Wine options were below average. The only decent wines were not included in the drink package and were an additional up charge. Why offer a drink package that doesn't include 50% of the drinks. The only channels on the TV were advertising for Royal Caribbean or how to spend money on the ship and BBC. They had movies on your TV available for $12/movie!!! Ridiculous. After 10pm there was nothing available to eat except cookies and pizza. The entertainment was below average. The movie theater was tiny, therefore should have ran the movies all day. They only had 2/day. I only saw 1 movie in 12 days because the theater was always full. The deal killer was the smell of smoke that smacked you in the face the minute you stepped onto the ship. The food was a disappointment by cruise ship standards. Breads and deserts showed signs of pre-prepared ingredients, mixes, frozen. Main dining room and Windjammer cafeteria there was a fair selection but the quality was moderate. At times little was on offer, especially in mid-afternoon on port days exactly when you might want a late lunch or snack. No pop-up bbq or special food events. Complimentary beverages were poor, coffee, watery lemonade, watery orange juice from mix or part mix. Fruit selection limited, bananas green. Room service was an additional charge. No good bbq, pizza, tacos etc., option outside of the main venues. Staff are friendly and try hard. Chops grille the food was good for premium charge if you enjoy steakhouse fare. Izumi was a very disappointing effort if you have good Asian food available by comparison available at home. Bar service was better, but then they can’t substitute name brand liquor, wine, beer. Still, some pre-mixes used in cocktails. Ship is a little tired by design, lacks a wide wooden promenade deck which I missed, but there is another running track on deck 12, and the exercise room is good. Cabin was a little worn - chipped cabinets, worn sofa, older fittings in bathroom, but clean, bed was comfortable, linens always fresh. Read Less

My 75th birthday treat and Bucket List "Go on a BIG SHIP". 4,128 passengers, 1,600 sunbeds. Overcrowded by about 1,000 passengers too many. Queues everywhere. Despite valiant staff service at bars is appalling that's if you can get a seat. On non sun days there is an acute shortage of seats. Hence the high amount of scooters as this is the only way to guarantee a seat. The food in the MDR is mediocre as RCI want you in the premium restaurants. At meal times the MDR is less than half full as all are in Windjammer which is spacious and the food is quite good plus you can have as much as you like. The ship is beautiful and well appointed with good shows in the theatre. But the queues and lack of seating spoil everything. Plus the paying system at the bars takes longer than getting your drink. Cabin 1686 was lovely and well looked after by an attentive steward. In future will stick to a smaller ship. Read Less

Food and Shows are getting worse over time... Don’t do this cruise if you have kids. I would spend the extra money and go Disney. The shows were dated and there were several days with comedians which were boring... Excursions were not worth the price payed. Everything is very rushed as some ports have 6 hrs before you have to back on the boat and driving to the loacation takes about an hour. While on the boat, despite confirmation that my child who turned three ball on the cruise would be able to go to the Kids camp was refused admission because their was too many kids and the boat didn’t have enough staff.... they should know this and plan before the ship leaves port!! The room staff is still helpful and kind and do a good job. Overall this cruise is underwilming if you have been on cruises before. It really shows that Royal is putting a lot of energy into the new big boats and has forgotten about the small and medium size boats. Read Less

cabin 6298 is opposite a main cleaning storage cupboard where all the room attendants congregate. It is extremely noisy here from early in the morning and in the afternoon. I wouldn't recommend this room. The room was clean and well maintained. The food in the main dining room for breakfast was chaos queues out the door waiting for a seat every morning for a good 15 mins. Then table staff moaning about how many people they had served that morning. Service was not good. We gave up after 2 mornings. Main dining room evenings food was hot and good choices. Windjammer was pot luck depending on what you chose whether it was barely warm or very hot. The food was tasty though when it was hot and we never had a problem getting seated. The ports of call were good and the beaches within walking distance were lovely. I was involved in an incident in the casino while playing roulette where the ball flew out of the roulette wheel at great seed and hit me in the face. The pain was excruciating and meant i couldnt enjoy the ship activities or drinks for a few days as it also effected my neck too. Rather and be supportive Royal Caribbean made me feel like a criminal refusing access to any reports either from the ships safety officer or the casino or access to the video. At a meeting in a tiny room i was surrounded by male officers standing over me behind and to the side in front of the exit doors while a male officer sat opposite me being very blunt and intimidating. When i asked if they had ever seen the ball fly out at such speed before he said arrogantly dozens of times! So my point is why are there no signs up warning of this. It was only about 4 inches from my eye. I have played in casinos for years and never seen it happen ever. When they refused to let me see the video i asked if they could tell me if i turned me neck quickly in a reflex action to stop the ball hitting me directly in the face and thats why it caught me right on the jaw line or whether the force of the ball hitting me is what made my head jerk back. They ignored my requests for this info so now i am back i have no idea what to say to any medical people if i need further treatment. I am a loyal cruiser with RCC and a VIP in the casino. I was given no point of contact for Miami nor did any staff call my room to check on me. Beware if you have an incident as it seems you are at fault and not them. Read Less

We had previously cruised on the Navigator in 2016 and enjoyed it (13 Nights), despite the ship looking a little jaded in places, but the shows and the itinerary made up for the condition of the ship. However in 2017 the ship looks a little rougher, but the shows are identical and the staff are just not interested in being polite and happy. The itinerary had been cut by 3 port days, which meant that there was 5 days at sea and 5 days in port, on the 5 days at sea, 2 of them where crossing the Bay of Biscay, so that wasn’t great, but we knew it would be so, however we were not prepared for such a worn out mattress on our bed, which made the crossing harder, due to the mattress being uncomfortable to start with. We asked for it to be changed, only to find it had been "padded" with towels, which made the hot nights unbearable. Overall this cruise had less days, a shorter itinerary, for more money! The bar service was very slow in some areas. Could have been much better. Read Less

We chose this cruise as my son has always wanted to see Eastern Europe. We were told to embark at 1030am which i was suprised at because it seemed quite early but were happy to go along with it. When we checked in we were given an empty folder pocket which apparently should have had a wifi code in but didnt, we should have had 2 drinks package stickers which we didnt and we got our coffee card which nobody pointed out was worthless because we had the drinks packages. on embarking the ship we found nothing really open, pools were shut and the windjammer wasnt open yet. We ate then went to see the cabin (1090). the room seemed in really good condition tbh, and i honestly didnt see any signs of obvious wear and tear. the sofa folded out into a futon which my 6ft 4 son found uncomfortable. When we got on we found no clue about setting up the wifi so just logged in presuming as we had paid this was ok. we also went to guest services to enquire about the dinner mystery show i had paid for. i said when i booked and paid i was told it was the first night. the guy assured me it was in estonia and it later changed to st. petersburg. so it changed 3 times in date, i was told there was no record of my booking twice (had paperwork on me with what i'd paid for). same with the drinks packages. until my paperwork was produced they denied all knowledge of my inclusive packages. in my opinion you should sack the entire guest services department. they dont do their job. as far as the 'adults only calm oasis to relax and unwind' pool seriously false advertising at its finest. it ended up with marauding packs of children in all three pools (apparently due to inclement weather unless adults wanted to swim before 12 (ummm excursions) or after 7 you could forget about anywhere to unwind and have a pleasant swim. the temperature outside during the day wasnt inclement, it was in the mid to late 20's which means that children could have used the pools with no bother whatsoever. and whats with the kids get the pool all afternoon thing. this seriously was a deal breaker to me, but i did try to swim in the solarium a few times, but after being jumped on (pool attendants not reminding people not to jump or dive, just staring into space), headbutted in the stomach twice by the same child, had a spanish boy literally thrown at me by his dad, was regularly kicked by unaccompanied children hanging off bridge in there i literally gave up with the swimming for my own safety. i did complain a few times, but it was just ignored. what i found inexcusable was a pool attendant singling out british people to shower before they entered the pool, whilst ignoring those from other nations who hadnt showered. i felt humiliated by this but just went along with things. we were turned away from the windjammer one day after a trip because there was no room. they wouldnt even let us in there. this meant that we had to go to park cafe and for 2 meals that day just eat snacks. this is inexcusable when there is literally nowhere else to get a meal on board. what would have been the effort in getting some hot plates and putting things like burgers, fries and a couple of other things by the pool letting those of us that wanted hot food eat something. this is a ship that would seriously benefit from splitting the pool bar in half and putting casual dining in the other half. we did try the movies under the stars the night we couldnt get into beauty and the beast in the cinema. but at night it was chilly. i know other cruise lines have crew dispensiing blankets and hot chocolate on these sort of occasions but nope, not this time so gave up. the tv on the room is basicaly 8 shows on a loop unless you want to pay $11.99 to rent a movie. although we dont spend loads of time in a room an hour relaxing always means its good to have tv. on our last day at sea we were spoiled for choiice between a movie about the turkish/armenian genocide, getting the crap kicked out of me in the pool again or going into the main theatre to see the cruise directors holidiay snaps he took in panama. really. we did laugh about the choice of movie since we had just watched a proud parade of 61 onboard nations (although they couldnt produce one union jack, but passed off a scottish flag as representing the united kingdom. so a movie inciting hatred against a nation seemed an odd choice. when we got the onboard account we were charged yet again for our prepaid internet, had tips taken twice and although the first day i had been to guest services and stated that i didnt want gratuities taken off for the dining staff as i didnt intend to eat in the main dining room it was taken off so i had over £300 unbudgeted removed from my account. on going on their facebook page and accusing them of piracy they did amend things. as far as the entertainment side of things goes i found it distinctly lacking. in the main theatre we had a maths guy, a show called velocity about music which was awful, the worst abba tribute band i've ever seen (from the pictures it looked like a bee gee / abba crossover, the cruise director and his band one night (the balancing act had his luggage go missing) and a 46 year old gymnast. we found that if you fully utilise your drinks package it makes it easier. the tribute to the musicals was stunning though. although it cost me a weeks wages the highlight of our cruise was the mystery dinner show. for families with teenagers it was so good. copious wine, nice food and we were all laughing at the end of the night. the actors were cheesy, came out with one liners totally off the cuff and made the night. the shore excursions we did were all royal caribbean ones ranging from dreadful (sweden by land and sea - boat portion couldnt hear anything then once on the bus the only thing we saw was the town hall), to absolutely brilliant estonia highlights (lovely older lady who knew so much and was mothering us the whole way round) to mega efficient (hermitage museum with gold room). and the free time in 3 places bus driver in helsinki was a real character who honestly was just as good if not better than a tour guide. on last night we had made a reservation with guest services for giovannis and were told there would be 25% off because of all the confusion over the dinner show. turned up and (what a suprise) giovanni had no record of our reservation or discount. i had also left my cabin steward tip with guest services but when i told the steward he said that he was unlikely to get it ???? honestly i really wanted to like this cruise, i had paid a fortune for things and just felt it came up totally lacking. with a bit of imagination like more casual dining, blankets for movie nights, better all round entertainment and a totally revamped guest services department this could be so much more. i had to pay a weeks wages for the dinner show, so for the date to be changed 3 times and being denied i had a reservation twice it trigged my IBS and for 3 nights i had crippling stomach pains with all the added stress. this coupled together with being headbutted in the stomach twice by children in the adults only pool i just felt badly let down for the amount of money i had paid. i would suggest anyone going on there takes copious proof of what they have paid for because you will need it. I usually feel the product delivered by RCI to be consistent and usually above average.I found one member of staff on this ship who actually smiled and engaged with me. Most members of staff, especially the bar staff, seemed miserable and lacking in any desire to serve. Usually I look forward to dinner in the main dining room but our waitress was so grumpy I felt like I was an inconvenience to her. I appreciate this ship is one of the older vessels and that it does not make financial sense to invest money in it now but there were obvious signs (literally the metropolis theatre sign was missing two letters) that this ship needed some attention. Bad smells, poor air conditioning in our room, wardrobe door hanging off. I am sure you are aware that some of the older ships do not get the investment that the newer ones do and I also see that that is reflected in the price but it felt at times that the basics were missing. I had such a wonderful time on the independence last october and that is also one of the older vessels so I know that it can be achieved. The good time I had on that ship was largely down to the wonderful staff we had ( CD Jamie fentiman and AM katy McCullagh were exceptional) I felt the CD on the navigator cuddy cuddleson and his activities manager mark? were not up to the standard I have experienced before such as the aforementioned jamie fentiman and also joff eaton who is always exceptional. I also had a CD called Mercedes a few years ago and she was wonderful as well. I really could go on and on about all the things on the Navigator that I feel are substandard but I really do not have the time, I love RCI and will continue to cruise with them but I feel I will avoid the older ships as I don't think the effort is put in there. 3rd time on the Nav. always had a very good time. This time it was poor. Food standard in the main dining room was well below previous visits.Used the 8.30pm dinner slot. Took 20/25 mins to get a glass of wine( wine waiters removed) starter received 9.05pm. main at 9.40pm, sweet at 1005pm on average each night.Waiters inexperienced. Sent main course back on 3 nights as cold/ uncooked. Ate in the Windjammer on 3 nights. Had a drinks package but service mostly very slow especially at peak times. not enough staff. Best bar on deck 14 turned over to the Diamond club members every night from 5pm to 8.30pm. No pre-dinner cocktails for the underclasses!. 5-6 quizzes every day, over done and old hat. Only two good shows, Beatles group and Queen tribute. Time of some port visits well short and poor itinerary timings. (Valencia had a Marathon on visit day,1 hr minimum to get into the city.!! Informed of this only on the night before docking.!! Lots of people had booked trips, so had to go or loose payments. Cabins ok but tired , hard bed. Cabin staff good but over worked. Very obvious reduction in staff ( except officers) all looked miserable and unhappy. Diamond club members catered for to the detriment of all other guests. Overrated extra high cost ,( not fine dining) venues with staff touting for custom early morning to late at night. Very annoying along with the Spa brigade.!! The overall experience is that Royal C. is using its guests as a cash cow with reduced staff and greatly reduced standards. Never Again. Read Less

Room was OK dining was not good the self service was always full and table service dining was hit and miss little changed on the menu daily it became a joke to ask what was tonight's fish to be told salmon or swordfish . Drinks are well overpriced 5Star prices for a 2 star experience. At the ports get a taxi cheaper than the transfer buses and use tourist information and local trains and buses to get round .entertainment was at best not well thought out to being second rate the only high point was the Ice Show very good . The restaurant service was great to shocking . The ship had daily sales that were either crap they could not sell or way overpriced they were offering 75% off luxury watches but a look on the Internet showed that they were well overpriced on retail prices don't buy things on board. Ship was renovated like a miniature version of Oasis/Allure. TV is limited with repeating shows shown in multiple languages. The safe feels like an oven when you pop open due to the equipment below such as TV and refrigerator. Given a choice between show versus dinner, we choose dinner since Windjammer close at 9pm. In the past it stayed open longer. During sea days, played Ping Pong. RC figured out a perfect spot to place the Ping Pong table. Usually it’s in the worst place possible where you’re constantly battling upmost environment. Lack of ship activities but everywhere you go, you’ll see RC selling merchandise from A to Z. After awhile, the constant "sell" gets old. Did they forget we are on vacation and we don’t want to be bother? Cuts backs are obvious in food and entertainment. Whether you are in the Windjammer and/or Dining Room, every day was pretty much the same thing with a slight variation. No Lobster on Formal night. Deserts were in tin pans. Only memorable night was the Chocolate fountain. I skipped over the main course and jump into the chocolate fountain. Entertainment show was boring. Rather to see the crew talent shows than the paid entertainers. Luggage arrived in a timely manner outside the cabinet (not inside). Upon disembarkation, luggage was scattered, not good when you're rushing to the airport. Don’t forget to return your swim towel or you’ll get charge $25. We used to sail often on RCC, but with the obvious cutback in food, entertainment and everything else, we’ll need to revisit other ships. The price continues to rise and the quality goes down. They should have planned this better. Onboard, lectures and trivia were great. Dining room food was fine, but service was lacking. Windjammer was typical. What they call "mousse" is some kind of whipped jello. Pavlovas were fantastic. Staff gave good attention to the diners. I loved that the specialty restaurants were open for lunch, but this was not advertised well. We were the only ones in Chops and Giovanni's Table for lunch, and it was good! Half the cost of dinner, and the lasagna is to die for! They had a large smoking area by the pool, but there were not enough ashtrays. Lounge chairs by the pool were losing their straps. I loved that there were coffee stations, and the Park Cafe provided delicious breakfast sandwiches, fruit, parfaits, and bagels. Read Less
