Chose RCL for TA because we’ve done TAs with RCL before. Found Rhapsody of the Seas to be disappointing. Even though she’s had a facelift in 2012 she is worn. Wooden tables are scuffed. Table in the Viking Lounge had red wine stains on the table top. I went into the ladies room to get some moist paper towels to clean the table. Balcony cabin roomy enough. Menu at the Windjammer repetitive day after day. In dinning room appetizers were identical day after day. Food was tasty enough. Entertainment is the usual comedians, singers, dancers, etc. nothing special. Piano player in the lounges was not only, awful, but also was shabbily dressed. I expect the entertainers to dress formally when they entertain. The ships size is very manageable. Getting from one end to the other is easy to navigate. Films shown on this voyage were truly geared to kids. There were very few children on the sailing. Read Less

We choose this cruise as it stopped in the Canary Islands and was supposed to go to CocoCay (lol) and to try a transatlantic. We treated ourselves to a junior suite as we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and although the suite itself was nice, there was too much noise from above. We were one cabin away from spa so have no idea what all the noise at night was from since the Park Cafe was on the opposite side. Guest services were no help after we complained to them about it. Entertainment on the ship was awful. The tribute group to the Beatles was good and so was the Celine Dion person (though her show was too loud) and we had also just seen her on the Brilliance. Getting tired of the repeated entertainers and shows on the medium/smaller Royal ships. Our stateroom attendant and our dining staff were great. Through no fault of our dining staff, as the head waiter decided that I didn't have to order ahead of time due to my having food allergies, I once again was given a plate with sauce and items I couldn't eat. This is the second time this has happened in three sailings so I no longer feel Royal is taking food allergies or dietary concerns seriously. We were disappointed in the activities being offered on a transatlantic. We hoped there would be lectures, better movies, etc. but Royal just did the same old stuff like they do in the Caribbean. The disembarkation process in Tampa was the worst we have every experienced. So very slow and not enough room for the luggage and all the people. Definitely suggest you miss this port. Although the cruise was fine, we are thinking it is time to look at other cruise lines. Read Less

The ship seemed well maintained. I loved the Solarium pool and the whirlpools in the main pool area. It would be nice if the whirlpools in the Solarium had jets. The food was good, though they never served a lobster dinner in the dining room, though they did in the Windjammer. There is not enough room in the Windjammer nor enough seats. I gave up eating there and ate all of my meals in the dining room. Some of the servers in the Windjammer were rude, cutting off guests to get where they were going. The servers in the dining room were mostly very good. Our dinner servers were great. The cabin was the smallest cabin we've had but functional. We were in it for 22 nights (back to back cruise) and the only real complaint was the mattress. It was hard as a rock. I let the steward know and she got some mattress pads to help cushion the mattress but I still had a lot of back pain. The cabin steward was very good. Some of the entertainment was very good, but some of it wasn't. One thing was good with the entertainment was they varied it for the back to back cruisers. Only 5 shows were repeated and of those 2 changed the show. 1 of the cast productions was very good, 1 was OK and the country music show really wasn't up to par, it seemed more of a parody of country music than a celebration of it. The cruise director was funny, enjoyable and didn't bombard us with notices. He helped make the cruise enjoyable. The ports we stopped at were great and that really helped us enjoy the cruise. All in all, it was a very enjoyable cruise so we booked another transatlantic next year. Read Less

This was a vacation that I took with family members all of whom are retired. The first leg of our cruise was the eight day Italy and Mediterranean cruise on the Rhapsody that began on October 24th, 2017. We decided to continue on the transatlantic crossing on the Rhapsody, back to the United States that ended in Tampa. We found the Rhapsody of the Seas a very small and old ship. The ship itself seems very dated and in need of a return to dry dock for refurbishing. ( We heard rumors that the ship's days in service are numbered and that RCCL is on the verge of selling her) Though we encountered many people who love the small ship experience, I personally love larger and more modern ships because they offer more variety in the entertainment and daily activities. Even the onboard shops on the Rhapsody offered very limited and unappealing merchandise. Though the Rhapsody is a small and dated ship, we found the crew to be very friendly, thoughtful, courteous and helpful in most ways. The ports of call to Lanzorite, La Palma and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands were amazing. Each one of those cities was interesting and different in their own ways. RCCL staff did an excellent job in arranging shore excursions in each of these ports. The tour guides spoke excellent English, were natives of those cities and were generally enthusiastic in guiding and showing us passengers through their cities. And for once, the tours provided by RCCL were reasonably priced and seemed competitive with the private taxis and cars situated at the piers. All of the ship's tours were provided on air conditioned, clean and modern coaches. We missed the Coco Cay stop because high winds prevented the use of tender boats to transport passengers to the island so i cannot comment on that port of call. Read Less

We choose this cruise because it did not go to the Caribbean, to unknown islands because of the Harricane. We wanted to see more of the Canary Islands. We were disappointed that the Captain knew that he could not 'tender' at Coco Cay and Royal Caribbean did not make provisions to stop at another port, i.e. 'Nassau or Freeport' probably because it cost 'money'. The terminal in Tampa is way too small for the number of passengers on this shio, and there luggage. There were only three Imigration Officers processing the passengers, therefore we were only group number eight and were two hours late leaving the ship and another hour going through Imigration with a Porter, longer if you were on your own. There is no "Globa Entry" at this terminal to expedite Imigration. Royal Caribbean, Imigration and the City of Tampa need to address these issues if Royal Caribbean wants people to cruise from Tampa. We were also 2 1/2 hours from the Skyway Bridge to docking which was over a half hour late. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the excellent value, the Loyalty program and the destination. We love Barcelona and live part of the year near Tampa, so the itinerary was important to us as well. We have wanted to visit Lanzarote and it will not disappoint if you like moonscapes and volcanoes. We booked with an alternative tour agency and spent about 6 hours on the island. Gran Canaria and La Palma were also ports we hadn't visited before and we enjoyed shopping and visiting these ports on our own. Although the ship is older, it is well maintained, but could use some updating with fabrics and carpets. This cruise had well over 700 Diamond/Diamond Plus/Pinnacle members and we never felt shortchanged on service, food or drinks in the lounge. Now that members can also get 3 drinks per day in the bars, we feel that decreased the load on the Diamond Lounge. We completed a survey on board about the lack of ballroom dancing in the Shall We Dance lounge and were immediately contacted by the cruise director Graham. He explained the reasoning for the decision and we were very pleased to have one evening of dancing with the orchestra on the beautiful wooden dance floor there. Read Less

We wanted a lot of R & R at Sea!!! It was also on my husbands bucket list to do a trans Atlantic cruise. It was wonderful. We love cruising and visiting with others in the lounges. Had awesome dinner guest at our table. We would do it again in a heart beat and have another plan for this August out of Coppenhagen to Boston with great stops between. We do short cruises (7-9 day) in between since my husband still works. Had special entertainment who perform the Beatles all over the World that boarded the ship in Canary Islands. Great performance!! Embarkation we walk right up and got on the cruise ship. Disembarkation was a total different story but wasn't the cruise line error. They had to undergo several inspections and the ground crew wasn't ready for the ship when we docked. We didn't start disembarkation till almost being there 2 hours due to this. Once they where ready than things went smoothly. Read Less

We took the same cruise last year and had no complains but this year there are problems. We have a Junior Suite, every day the toilet is blocked, took a week for them to admit that the problem is in a whole block of cabins from 2 deck to 10 deck. I was accused of using too much toilet paper! The balcony rail is in a dreadful state. The carpets on the stairways are threadbare. The ship is in dire need of a refit. The staff in the Windjammer are very unhelpful. My husband is disabled and nobody offers to help him carry his food to his seat - usually a passenger comes to his rescue. The sugar free drinks are not very often on offer and when we asked we were told they have run out - next meal there they were again. We requested the lights to be put on above where we were sitting in the evening and were told to move tables if we didn’t like it. We paid a lot of money for our cabin (our steward however is wonderful) we’ve been cruising for 32 years and have been on Royal Caribbean many times but this is the worst Cruise in a long while. We enjoy transatlantic cruises . This is the fourth with Independence . The ship is definitely old fashioned now. Food was nowhere near as good as last year. We could eat in Chops Grille for breakfast but often decided to go to the Windjammer where the food was hot. Having paid the premium through RCL for a suite we enjoyed the space in the cabin and on the balcony. Our cabin steward was discreet but worked well. The cruise director was like marmite . The Nov 11 Service was well put together but the catholic priest just did not get it right with his sermon - a great shame for the company. Good quizzes and good banter from those leading them . As usual the Diamond Lounge was heaving but the staff members were a delight . Enrichment activities were not well attended after the first . Embarkation in Southampton and disembarkation in Fort Lauderdale worked like a dream for us as we had priority “line jumping”. Entertainment was varied and of a very good standard . Read Less

We are a married couple from Scandinavia, who previously have been on a large number of cruises. We have sailed, both on many Transatlantic cruises, and on other destinations with several different Cruise Lines. Pre-cruise: We had booked in advance a private shuttle from our arrival airport in London, to our hotel in Southampton. As several times before, we had reserved a room at the 4* Hotel Novotel in Southampton, one day before the cruise. Unfortunately, this time we were very disappointed with the cleaning of our room. The toilet looked terrible. The shower was also not cleaned. Embarkation: Went very smoothly. The voyage: In the same way as last year, Independence sailed a northern route over the Atlantic Ocean, which again meant that we had to wait to we approached Caribbean, before we could enjoy really warm weather. Unfortunately, if you are not out early, it can be a big challenge to find available sun loungers on sunny and hot days at sea. Also on this Transatlantic cruise with RCI, after the first two cruise days, we again lost all TV channels with news coverage. According to what our Cruise Director Marc Walker explained on one of his TV Morning Show, the reason for this was missing satellite connection. Strange enough, Holland America did not have the same "satellite problem" during our two Transatlantic cruises with this Cruise Line. The background for the very poor selection of TV Channels, were probably that RCI want their passengers to buy expensive internet packages. The Ship: The Independence of the Seas is a nice ship, and we think the ship was mostly well maintained. Even if she will be refurbished in April next year, Stateroom info: We had booked an aft. balcony stateroom on deck eight. It was comfortable. Our stateroom attendant from Guyana was a nice guy. But unfortunately, we were not satisfied with the work he carried out in our stateroom. Dining: We had the second seating in the Macbeth Dining Room, on deck four. We were mostly pleased with the quality of the food that we selected. We were seated at table no. 488, and we were pleased with the service from our waiter, and his female assistant waiter from Ukraine. Not least, she did an excellent job of making sure our wine and water glasses never were empty. We will also in this review take the opportunity to point out our excellent assistant waiter from our cruise with Independence last year, Daiane Segali from Brazil. During our first dinner in the Machbeth Dining Room this year, she recognized us before we saw her. She embraced us, and although she did not serve our table on this cruise, she almost every dinner came to give us a hug. She is a very nice person, and she is really an outstanding ambassador for RCI! The food for breakfast and lunch in the Buffet Restaurant Windjammer, was basically what we were used to from earlier cruises. We think the employees in Windjammer, on this cruise did a good job of clearing tables etc. Unfortunately, like last year we found the selection of food in the Café Promenade, more limited than we were used to find on RCI ships with a Café Promenade - some years ago. Bars: As usual, some of the bars were understaffed. General comment about the crew: The majority of the crew we met were friendly. Entertainment: Of course, a lot of entertainment. The two different ice shows we watched, were as always excellent, and also on this cruise we really enjoyed the musical production of Grease. However, we were not impressed with the performances of guest artist Jennifer Singer, and the a cappella group. When it came to Cruise Director Marc Walker, we realized that many of the passengers were pleased with him, but we were not among them. We thought his TV Morning Show consisted of too much nonsense talk. This in contrast to what we experienced last year, with Cruise Director Jamie. We personally think he was both more fun, and also more professional on the TV Morning Show. The Crown & Anchor Society: As always, we were very pleased with the nightly event for Diamond members and above, with the offer of free beverages and canapés, and in addition the three drink coupons. On a Transatlantic cruise with RCI, there are usually a very large number of Diamond members and above. Fortunately, on this cruise on the nightly event, both bar service and the offer of beverages and canapés were pretty good. As Diamond Plus members, we also had access to the Concierge Lounge. But in the evening, it was too crowded. Itinerary – As stated in the title of this review, we had changes in the ports of call. The reason for that, was the serious damages caused in Caribbean, by the hurricanes Irma and Maria. This resulted in a change of three of our five original ports of call. Fortunately, we thought the new ports of call were all good. Immigration – like previous years, the immigration process should originally have been carried out on our arrival in St. Thomas. But St. Thomas was one of the ports of call that were changed. Instead, immigration was now carried out on arrival in Fort Lauderdale. The process took for us, one hour and 45 minutes. Disembarkation: We had booked a shuttle on board to Fort Lauderdale International airport. So after picking up our two suitcases in the terminal building and finishing the immigration process, it was just to find an available shuttle bus. Overall – on the whole we think we had a nice Transatlantic cruise with Independence of the Seas this year. Read Less

The cruise was a retirement gift to ourselves , lovely ship starting to look a little bit tired but spotlessly clean and a credit to Royal Caribbean. Our waiter was amazing , after day 1 he remembers our names our drinks and our preferences. I know it’s his job but you really appreciate the effort both he and his assistant made . The food in the main restaurant was absolutely first class , I,m a diabetic and my every need was taken care of . The buffet breakfast and lunch was spot on , my only gripe and it is a small one is it could be a bit of a stampede to find a table . We ate at two specialty restaurants both served excellent food . Entertainment on board was first class , everything from the daily quizzes to the full broadway show . This was undoubtedly an amazing holiday but it’s just not for us , the first eight days at sea really was too much but I,m guessing if you are a cruise type of person you would absolutely love it . Our first transatlantic cruise proved to be a runaway success - the sea was as calm as a millpond all the way across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and through to Port Lauderdale. In typical RCCL fashion we were booked in and aboard within 20 minutes from leaving the car. Our first impressions of the Independence were of how clean everything appeared to be but on closer inspection, how tired the decor and furnishings seemed in the cabins and corridors - she certainly needs the refit due next year and will hopefully be restored to her former glory. The menu and meals offered in the Macbeth dining room was tailored more to the UK clientele with something for everyone - although some of the combinations on the plate didn't always work in my opinion - all of the meals were served piping hot and were generally very good, the speed of the service was at our pace as we specifically requested a table of two so we could better plan our evening if we didn't have to wait for six to finish each course. The entertainment on board was the usual run of quizzes and talks, sports and leisure activities during the day. Please go prepared to the quizzes, take your own pens, pencils, marker pens and highlighters - that way you can look as professional as some of our fellow cruisers that are obviously SERIOUS quizzers and soooo boring when they question the answers given by the quizmaster...so of those people need to get a life! Evenings, we had a choice of the usual stage shows, Grease (which had a few tech problems), the ice show -always good considering the size of the rink. A Violinist, very good if you like that sort of thing, A Welsh comedy magician, a Hypnotist, and a show singer (ex Lion King) these were the shows I watched - all good entertainers in their own right and fortunately only about 40 minutes long (except Grease at 90 minutes) so if they don't please you its not long to wait until the end - rather than rudely walk out in the middle of a performance as some did! My only gripe was the lady jazz/blues pianist that played most evenings in the Schooner - usually our favourite place and hard to get a seat after dinner was mostly empty whenever she played...absolutely dire! The staff on board had a noticeable different mix of nationalities than previous cruises, there being more European faces and it certainly gave a different vibe - but as usual with only one or two exceptions each and every one gave 100% in service and attitude, politeness and a smile always present. The itinerary was changed from the original due to the hurricane damage to various and each port visited had its own particular charms - certainly no complaints there. Overall? good cruise, typically Royal Caribbean. Would I do it again? Yes, definitely. Read Less

We use transatlantic cruising as we spend half off the year in Florida and the other half in the UK. The check-in at Southampton went very smoothly so onwards up to the schooner bar. We met our friends who we actually met over 3 years ago on this very same ship. We had a ocean view room but was very noisy and I did ask to be moved, however the ship was full and they did finally move us when we made our first stop as people we getting off. We did have set dining at 8.30pm but after 3 nights we asked to be moved as one guy was so annoying i really had had enough of him. The meals were fine if there was any problems the waiter was more than happy to replace the meal. Both myself and my husband love doing the quizzes and sometimes there could be up to 5 a day but the funniest one was the Battle of the Sexes. You had to be there to understand the banter Nick you did a great job as the question master. As for the cruise director and his assistant must say the worst I have ever come across. The lady playing in the piano bar was also very poor no-one wanted to listen to her. We did I.O.S in March 2017 and the English guy they had was excellent. We are doing transatlantic back to UK on Navigator as I.O.S is being refurbished but we are back on I.O.S October 2018 . Embarkation took a while but nothing we were bothered about as for the next 5 months we will be sunning ourselves. Read Less

I like to take a repositioning cruise to relax after a long road trip. If not for the bridge games I would’ve jumped ship. The cabin had a ticking noise all night, the beds were hard, and there was a mildew smell in the hallway the entire cruise. We always eat in the buffet because we like the many options. We are kosher and have more choices on the buffet. The service at the buffet was excellent although the choices were more meager than usual. The entertainment was wonderful, every night brought an amazing act to the stage. The ports were the Canary Islands off the African coast, we enjoyed the tours we purchased from the cruise line. The disembarkation was awful, we didn’t get off the ship at the designated time, the lines through customs were awful. There were only 6 custom agents for 3000 people, our car service charged us an extra 50 dollars for the delay, a highly disappointing end to an average cruise. Read Less

Having sailed most of my other cruses from Southampton it was refreshing and a great add to sail from Barcelona although flights here can be a little bit of a pain from Manchester! I will never fly in a Ryan Air Plane again! Travelling with my partner and friends we have a fantastic time on and off the ship. Staff are wonderful and work hard at getting this done for you most of the time. Unless you are complaining about the internet service then they first make you feel it is your issue then the satellite they switched to but took 24 hours and a lot of complaining to get them to admit they had technical issues and were working on it and we did receive a 2 day refund as we had paid for the full 14 days! The entertainment and services were fantastic. The food in the Windjammer was the worst I have ever experienced. A total Lack of Good Asian Food in Jade. The English Sausage left me laughing most mornings. The food on the rest of the ship was however of a very good standard. The airport Transfer at the end of the cruise was like dropping into Hell itself kept waiting an hour while the lone driver loaded the luggage with no aircon at all the 12 min journey was just hell! Few lectures and too much "shopping on Promenade" ==crowds. Also, missed seeing real news as only on CNN, which was out many days. Almost every program which we would have liked to watch before bed, was repeated daily. Art auctions seemed to dominate almost every sea day with clashing times for enjoying other venues. The explanations of the artists were truly enlightening. Waite staff was friendly and efficient. Food usually lukewarm and often not tender as should be. Shows - outstanding! Orchestra top notch, as were singers and dancers. Productions on stage and fantastic ice show were truly professional and creative. Did appreciate unexpected "solo travelers" dining group. An activities rep. joined us and I was overwhelmed by their interest in passengers and sharing of experiences. Read Less

All of the ship's crew were wonderful. Providing wonderful service and always willing to help. Our cabin steward, dinning staff and entertainment was fabulous. There were a few negative items. First, we could not get any US news on the television for the entire crossing. The ship did not provide a daily newspaper, plus their were only recorded channels. They did offer movies at a price of $11.00 to $12.00 per movie. The internet, when working was faster than most transatlantic cruises. The cost of purchasing internet is for a 24 hour period, but often the internet was not operating the entire 24 hour period. Many mornings when we logged on there was not internet connection. The cruise did not give us extra time for the when the internet was unavailable. Read Less

This was our first transatlantic cruise, and we could not be happier. Seas were calm, Weather was great, lots to do ( or not do) on the ship. We got a 5 night dining package and especially loved Sabor and Chops. We also did the Chefs Table which was terrific. The meal and wine were really good. His included a galley tour which I enjoyed a lot. Fascinating to see how they produce that volume of food. Glad we had a balcony because weather was wonderful and we spent lots of time there. We actually ate most of our meals in the Windjammer and were very happy with it. He coffee shop on the promenade turned out to be a great place to meet new friends for conversation and people watching. halloween parade was disappointing because RCL had not crownd control and parade experienced bottlenecks. Teamwork’s parade was first rate. E are already planning the next transatlantic. Read Less

We loved this cruise and ship. It was the first Transatlantic cruise we have taken, and based on our experiences here, we plan to take more similar cruises. Crew members were extremely friendly and helpful. Officers were visible throughout the ship and seemed to welcome discussions with passengers. We were particularly impressed with food quality and selections throughout the ship. Food presentation was elegant and the taste was outstanding. There was a wealth of activities, yet also areas where you could find calm and quiet, if desired. We were also impressed with the little "extras" that were provided to make this trip memorable (cookies, chocolate covered strawberries, gifts, and other treats sent to our room; free specialty coffee at the Cafe Promenade; large venues for Crown and Anchor events; "Chefs at Sea", which was a fun food competition amongst ship officers that worked similar to the popular television entitled, "Chopped." Overall, kudos to the ship's staff and crew. Read Less
