We picked this cruise due to its leaving from Baltimore. I went with my sister, who lives in Baltimore. Boarding was easy, luggage showed up quickly, got into room at 1:00. Food: Main dining room excellent for dinner. Didnt really spend much time there for breakfast or lunch Windjammer - this is where we had most breakfast and lunch. Buffett wasnt bad except beware the buffet eggs!! Probably worth the line for fresh omletts, but we didnt. Park Caffe- tried 1st night with munchies, NOT GOOD Service... Excellent thru out ship. Bartenders, hosts, waiters, room service, room steward, all outstanding! Room: We were in 3558 a oceanview. Room was spotless, roomy enough, bathroom tight. Hard not to get the floor wet when showering. We spent most of time in the Centrum, band was excellent, other shows good however we never made it to the theatre. Too busy!! My husband and I took my parents on this cruise with the intentions that this cruise was all about them. My mom cannot walk that far and I felt a smaller ship would make her cruise more enjoyable for her. The service that we received from the staff was outstanding. My husband and I have been on many cruises and have never had service like we did on this ship. We do feel because we were on a smaller ship and not one of those mega ships that the crew is able to really go above and beyond to their passengers. We ate at Chops Grille twice and Giovanni’s once and the food was fantastic! The food in the main dining room was excellent. Any restaurants that we ate at, if my mom wanted something that was not on the menu they always met her requests. This ship also recognizes Veterans and has a very moving ceremony in the main atrium. If you are looking for impeccable service and a smaller ship I would highly recommend this ship and cruise line! Read Less

Walt Okon =Review of GRANDEUR OF THE SEAS on 5- 14 September 2019 in room Grand Suite #8016 Grand Suite # 8016 is located on the eighth deck, port side (Left Side) of the ship. 1/3 of the way from the bow of the ship. Stateroom Attendant was Dominic Moses. He was excellent in all respects. This room was perfectly clean and set up for us. We use sanitizer wipes on everything and inside every drawer. There was no dust anywhere. Temperature control: the system worked perfectly, best control of any room I every had. The mini refrigerator keeps everything very cold. Lighting: Excellent on the complete lighting system and controls. Balcony: Large with table and four chairs and two excellent lounge chairs. Bed: King size with luxurious bedding. The mattress was good but did have the middle high point. We had good sleep every night. Storage: Three large hanging closets and 16 drawers. Lots of storage. The only concern was noise from the ninth deck (pool deck) when they moved furniture, the noise was unbearable. Crew Staff: All very friendly and all were excellent. I cannot say enough excellent things about them. Food: Royal Caribbean food quality has diminished in the past five years because Royal in buying bulk frozen foods that are just cook. Example; hash brown potatoes come in the perfect size and portion that are just fried and served. These and many others are not fresh, but frozen stock. Now York stake and prime rib is so thin the quality taste is not possible. Frozen prepackaged items are served with excellent presentation; but the fresh taste is not there. Royal food quality had been diminished over the years. This is due to Royal Caribbean corporation doing mass food buys/contracts. The corporation is buying food in mass like McDonalds. Cooks can only do their best with the food supplies provided by the corporation. Clam Chowder was soupy and tasteless – worst clam chowder ever. Crab Cake tasted more of bread consistency than crab. Minestrone soup at lunch in Gatsby served with the soup spilled over the cup and down into the serving dish -poor presentation. Dining Room: Great Gatsby main dining is on deck 4 and 5. The staff of head waiters, waiter, and assistant waiters have maintained this restaurant with grandeur and excellence. Dress is formal on formal nights and Smart casual at all other times. Head waiters, waiter, and assistant waiters were all excellent to outstanding. Food quality is only fair to good (3 stars at best). Again, this is due to Royal Caribbean corporation doing mass food buys/contracts. Cooks can only do their best with the food supplies provided by the corporation. Specialty Restaurant: Chop Grill. We had an excellent and very pleasant breakfast in the Chop Grill every morning. Fine dining, perfectly clean lining and dining setting every time. Waiters all excellent. They were very attentive and receptive to all special dining request. Excellent food preparation and presentation. Some frozen prepackaged items are served with excellent presentation; but the fresh taste is not there. Crown & Anchor: Diane Megumi, Loyalty Ambassador Miss Diane Megumi was the Loyalty Ambassador on this cruise. She made herself available and attentive to every question and need. She is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the Royal programs and knows how to provide solutions quickly. I personally brought a new first-time cruiser couple to her and she quickly enabled them as Crown & Anchor members. Concierge Lounge: Dudley Jean, Concierge Concierge Club Lounge is on Deck 11 is a private club lounge with a very advantageous view is the ship and ocean. It is a sound proof room enabling quiet conversations. It is managed by Concierge Dudley Jean and two attentive bar waiters. The ambience is excellent. Continental breakfast and special coffee were not always set up and ready in the lounge daily at 7:00 AM. Diamond Lounge: Ilona Tsyhaniuk, Diamond Concierge The Diamond Lounge is open to Royal Diamond member only and on this Grandeur of the Seas trip 5-14 Sep2019 is managed by Concierge Ilona Tsyhaniuk. She is excellent and is the best concierge I have had on Royal. She has been the most responsive to all needs and questions. The presentation of snacks and refreshments is very well done always looking fresh and inviting. The only and big problem is that the Diamond lounge is not a room that is quiet. It is only a participation space. The wall does not reach the ceiling and the noise from the South Pacific Lounge is unbelievable loud some time making conversation impossible. Guest Services: Adelaida Contreras, Senior Guest Services Officer provided service quickly and efficiently. Her personality and smile made us comfortable as she fixed a problem on the first hour we were on the ship. Salon & Spa appointments: On 12 September 2019, Mrs Go-Okon had a spa appointment for 11:15 AM. Mrs. Go-Okon arrived at 11:10 AM early for the appointment. The Spa front desk person told her to sit down and wait even though there were no other customers. But, the desk receptionist, services two other white woman while ignoring her and not calling her back after she finished with the white customers. Was Mrs Go-Okon being ignored because she is Asian? After being ignored and waiting twenty minutes, Mrs Go-Okon went to the desk again explained she has an appointment at 11:15 AM. The new receptionist said she would get some one. She cam back in five minutes and brought Mrs Go-Okon into a treatment room. The Spa treatment started at 11:50 AM which is 35 minutes scheduled appointment of 11:15 AM. Mrs Go-Okon is stating, “I felt DISCRIMINATED upon because of the way I was TREATED!!” Special Staff Recognition: Becknar Bermudes, Royal Caribbean Dance Instructor is an excellent dance teacher. She is always smiling, friendly before and after sessions with guests. She is genial, kind, and patient in all things and a shining star representing Royal Caribbean. She is one of the hardest working staff personnel I have seen. She is everywhere, helping everyone. Sarah Jane Ete, Windjammer Attendant is outstanding in serving her guests. She is quick to server the needs of the guests as she constantly observing their needs and how she can be helpful. She has a maturity about her in the Hotel management and serving field. She has excellent communications skills and is easy to talk sharing thoughts and ideas. Dickerson Lacsamana, Assistant Maitre d’ is an outstanding leader and manager. We have observed him for nine days and it is evident the entire restaurant staff look to him for leadership and guidance. Resolving problems and guiding staff with a gentile smile is an attribute that is in high demand. Recommend Royal Caribbean consider him for promotion into leadership position with complexity. Keith Sepulveda, Receptionist and hand sanitizer at the entry of the Windjammer Café’. This lady was an outstanding smiling welcome to the Windjammer. She brought smiles to our face every day. In fact, we looked forward to seeing her. She deserves recognition. Over-All Rating Outstanding. It is the friendlest Royal ship. I recommend it Walt Okon, Springfield, Virginia Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary, the reputation of the Grandeur and for timing around the end of school. We cruised with a family with two pre-teens with whom we are essentially family and both families live near Baltimore. We arranged private transportation to and from the port due to the party size of six and the amount of luggage. Upon arrival, the Port of Baltimore did itself no favors as our driver was directed to one line where the luggage carts were being locked and when attempting to ask for direction to another line we were met with incredible indifference and ineptitude. Once we finally offloaded our luggage, we were then met with yet more confusion as we had booked the Royal Suite and the other members were Diamond members. Port staff had no idea where to direct people for security screening and actually dumped both parties into different, yet packed and slow moving, lines. We met at the screening and went through together. By that time we had been able to identify ourselves to Royal staff and our concierge, Carlington Berry (more on Carlington later) was waiting for us on the ship side of security. That was the last of any bad issues for embarkation. Carlington whisked us directly to check-in and then around all other lines directly to a private elevator (one woman decided to latch on and was with us all the way to and pushed into the elevator with her husband by pure hubris) and then to our suite. All of the features of the suite were discussed and our attendant, Fernando Dierra, was introduced to us. The staff of the Grandeur truly earns their reputation as the friendliest in RCI's fleet, the food was superior to other RCI ships (Majesty and Monarch) we have cruised on and the itinerary delivered. Finally, the staff in the Great Gatsby dining room was top notch, with our table's servers, Deepshika and Mary Ann, being the best we have ever had by far. Deepshika especially, as our head server, was organized efficient and catered to our party's every request. The only average part of our experience were the shows in the main theater. They were at best average, with a hypnotist and a comedian being each an hour we will never get back. We chose private tours we arranged separately and all were excellent. Specifically, Jolly Breeze Tour's jet boat whale watching tour from St. Andrews-by-the-Sea (St John port stop) was in the top 5 of all excursions we have ever done, including seaplane snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and a helicopter into the Grand Canyon for lunch below the rim. We had been concerned about a rough ride in the zodiak for the girls but they actually wanted more wake jumping as the tour went on. The shock-absorbing seats helped a lot. Read Less

We took the train from North Carolina the day before and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express across from the Casino. The hotel was clean but unremarkable. We were pleasantly surprised to see others who would be sailing with us there along with at least one Pinnacle couple. The shuttle from the hotel was already full for the early times so we decided to Uber it over. Less than $20 with tip. As we were arriving some of the folks from the previous sailing were still milling about and looking for their rides. The site did not have a lot of signs and we had to carry our checked luggage over to trams to be loaded. Since we were so early, we grabbed a bench outside and less than 15 minutes later someone got us and we went through security and to the check-in process. Mostly painless, but the brace on my wife's leg seemed to puzzle the security people. Still, we were one of the first checked in and shown the suite lounge. In the lounge, we were joined by some others including a nice couple cruising by themselves without their kids and family. Hi Tim and Tracy! We joked about the "difficulties" of getting to the port but agreed this was a smooth process. After about 15 minutes, they came and got us. As I mentioned, my wife had a knee brace from a broken leg and we got to enter the ship from deck 1 and not have to use the gangway. A nice option for those with mobility issues. At 10:03 we were on the pool deck and heading for the bar. We had the deluxe beverage package and wasted no time using it. It was a bit of a splurge, but we checked prices and got a great deal. In my opinion, the package is great because it offers you the ability to not worry about getting a drink. We waited for the Windjammer to open and called family and friends to let them know that vacation had started and they wouldn't likely hear much from us except pictures on Facebook of us having a good time! The food in the Windjammer was always good and varied. Most of the times the crowds were not too bad except at the made to order egg line. My wife mentioned a couple of times that the food was a little cool. I didn't think that myself. We split our breakfasts from the Windjammer and the main dining room. The Windjammer is more convenient, but we like the fact that you can sit with different people each day and have some great conversations. We did Mytime dining and had the same waiter and assistant waiter (Michael and Derick). They were wonderful and took amazing care of us. We skipped dinner on the first day in Bermuda since our tour got back late and ate at Giovanni's one night, but our MDR experience was outstanding. We hadn't eaten at Giovanni's before since my wife doesn't eat pasta, but we did it this time because I had to try the Pasta Carbonara. It was good. I did try small portions of several portions of pasta as well as shrimp and my wife had a filet. All was very good and we agreed that we would have to eat at Giovanni's again. We loved the entertainers that we saw, but we were disappointed by the ruckus in the comedy show the last night. We weren't there, so I'm not going to go further into it. There were some very talented guests and the karaoke performances were great. We actually gravitated to the Schooner bar by the end of the cruise. At night, we were entertained by the piano player, Danny Burgess, he was great at pulling the guests into his performance and even got several ladies to sing along clucking like chickens including my wife. He is out of Texas and had to fill in for Giovanni who got sick the cruise before ours. If you get a chance to hear Danny, don't pass it up. On Bermuda, we did a private tour with another couple with Quinton Bean and got an amazing tour of the islands and their history. The only complaint I have is the fact that we didn't dock until 2 PM and much the island slows down or shuts down in the late afternoon. It didn't help that we got there on a Saturday. Sunday was even slower and the weather was bad - nasty storms and lightning. We planned on going to Horseshoe Bay, but the weather kept us at the dockyard - most of which was closed. Nassau was Nassau, nothing remarkable. On Coco Cay, we rented a Chill Island Cabana(Oceanfront when we booked it). They revamped the cabana area with the whole Perfect Day relaunch. It was still a great time and having the nice calm cove with all the fish was great. For the right price, I'd do it again. The best part of this cruise and was the core group that was part of the Roll Call page. We had a meet and Mingle hosted by John and Katrina Blair and some of us did an impromptu cabin crawl. Definitely some ideas for future cruises. We do junior suites but are now on the lookout for aft view JSes and good prices on full suites. We have sailed on Grandeur before, but will she has aged some, you'd not be able to tell by looking at her and the crew and service are still the best part of a trip on "Lady G"! Read Less

DH had Bermuda as a bucket list item and we've heard wonderful t hings about the Grandeur (all true!). From the time we boarded to disembarkation, the ship and crew were first class and we had a wonderful time. The ship may be older, but is in very good condition. We were told the crew had been voted friendliest crew in the fleet. I can certainly see why. There wasn't anyone that wasn't doing the best possible job. The dining service team were first class. We heard our sailing was only the second sailing where our waiter was a waiter ( he was an assistant waiter prior to that). We would have thought he had been doing this for years. Both he, his assistant and the head waiter left us wanting for nothing. Our cruise director, John Blair, celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with the Activities manager, Katrina. Both they and their teams did a great job and were out and about and very approachable. For people that think the CD & AD has no impact on their trip, think again. A great one can make all the difference (as could a bad one). We booked RCCL after sailing on NCL, Carnival, and MSC because we thought it would be more luxurious, but we've come to the conclusion all cruise lines are pretty much the same. The food was great, but the latest food venue closed at 1:00am, and it only had nachos, hotdogs and burgers. They need a 24 hour dining option with a broader selection. We had all of our dinners in the main dinning room and all of the meals were great. The wait staff was also very attentive and worked very hard to make sure that every passenger was satisfied. They were very accommodating when I ordered 2 appetizers, or on the evening that I ordered 2 entrees so that I could have steak with my lobster. The cabin steward was also top notch. Every time we left the room, he went in to clean, make the bed and straighten up. The only negative on this cruise was the first day tossing and turning enroute to Bermuda. The Captain was trying to get away from a storm system and was streaming full speed across the Atlantic which made the ship pitch and lean heavliy to port and starboard. Lots of sea sickness bags were placed on the stair ways, and guest services was giving out free sea sickness pills. There was one other minor negative as this ship did not provide digital photos. The photo prices were reasonable, but on Carnival and MSC, we were able to get digital files that we could immediately share online with friends. I was told that the ship didn't have the server capacity to support digital photography. Everything else about this cruise was great. Read Less

The service was over the top, bed was very comfortable, food was always great, fellow passengers were so friendly, entertainment was over the top. How could you not love Alfred & Seymour! Reading reviews. From some others here, I wonder if I was on the ship with them, Yes, it is an older ship, but I would not want to be on a ship with 5000-7000 people making reservations for all the shows & waiting in lines for everything. I met so many friendly people and made new friends. I enjoyed hearing others talk about how many times they have been on the ship. Anyone who did not enjoy themselves on this cruise only has there selves to blame. While on vacation cruising to beautiful islands with beautiful people the glass is not only half full but all the way full! Read Less

I love the longer cruises. When I leave the ship I always feel that I’m leaving family behind! It’s always like a big reunion each time I return to the ship. Lots of repeat cruisers because of the friendliness of the ships crew! My cabin was an interior 3079, close to the elevator which I wanted! A little noise from the Centrum, however not enough to bother me, plus nothing goes on the Centrum after 11 pm I’m a solo traveler and never feel alone on this cruise! Highly recommend! Not to be missed is the Neil Diamond show, it’s great. On day 11 of the 12 night cruise the Veterans and First Responders were recognized as they are on this ship every cruise, plus earlier in the cruise they had a Veterans get together. Last night of the cruise there’s a Flag parade, Flags from each country represented by crew are proudly displayed! When they get to the USA there’s an uproar! Great ship, great crew and fantastic passengers! Read Less

We chose this ship primarily because of the cheaper cost, itinerary. (St Croix) and port of departure. We own property on St Croix and wanted to visit to take care of a little business as well as see friends and have a vacation in the mean time. Price: This cruise was cheaper than getting to JFK, flying to STX, renting a car for a week, renting a cottage for a week and handling all our food expenses. I think the location as well as price attracts many repeat cruisers. We found people who had been on the ship 33 times! 3-6 times was fairly common. Also, as others have said, it is an old crowd with many diamond members. Crew: They are excellent. Every one of them. Can't say enough nice things about the wait staff, room attendants, customer service etc. They get to know you quickly, like to kid around and talk and always took good care of us. Passengers: Much older crowd with very few kids. That's ok because they tend to be a laid back, smart, experienced crowd that are fun to meet. Maybe it's the mid-west and mid-atlantic vibe due to the departure location but almost everybody is very friendly. Some folks practically live on this ship. Activities: It's an older ship and doesn't have a lot of activities, especially in the evenings. That's ok with us. We are 60 & 64. We don't need DJ blasting pool parties. If we really want to see a Broadway show we'll take a train to Broadway. A little more entertainment and more outdoor dance options like an afternoon pool party would be nice. They did have a fun 70's night but most dances seemed to cater to an older crowd of very well practiced dancers doing waltzes, cha-cha's and even tangos. That left us feeling a bit left out but the showy dancers are still friendly. Most dancing takes place in the Centrum which is ringed with seats for 3 levels and open all the way from decks 4 through 8. It was nice to be able to walk down the hall from our deck 8 room and look down & check out what is going on. We enjoyed "enrichment" watercolor painting with Rosemary and her hubby. They are a lot of fun. Also the after 9 PM piano singalongs in the schooner bar with Russ were fun. What shows they did have were fun with comedians, singers and a jazz sax player. My wife saw the cruise director put a great Neil Diamond tribute. I was at a wine tasting at the time. Ports: We did a 12 night Eastern Caribbean run and the ports are were very good. St Croix, Antigua, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and St. Martin. We mostly did 3rd party tours. We had one RCL excursion on St Lucia; a catamaran ride for sightseeing, swimming at a bay and then viewing the Pitons. The crew on the cat was a blast and very knowledgeable. On/off was super easy as the cat was docked right in front of our ship at the port. Cabins: I said that we went cheap. We were in an interior room. It was 136 sq feet. It was tight getting in & out of bed but otherwise very serviceable with plenty of cubbies to put stuff. Others have said that suitcases don't fit under the bed. We solved that by leaving then open so they slid under, but that limits how many you can fit. I suggest bring bags that nest inside each other when empty like Russian Dolls. Bottom line: if you like an older crowd and are looking for a laid back relaxing ship this fits the bill. We would defiantly go again if we were still going be nearby the departure point. Read Less

The Grandeur has the best crew on any seas, always smiling and friendly looking to make your day the best. This ship is smaller and older by today’s standards,if your looking for all the bells and whistles this ship is not for you,if you want a nice relaxing cruise with good service this is the one for you, if you have children I suggest another ship they may get board if they are a little older not much for them to do.The food and service in the dining room was good, the windjammer also good just hard to find seating sometimes. The production shows are the same ones that have been on this ship for sometime now, the headliners were very good don’t wait until the last minute to try to get a seat. Embarkation and disembarking the ship could not go any easier.The port of Baltimore is easy to navigate no matter how you choose to get here. Read Less

We don't fly so it is convenient to drive to Baltimore from Ohio. Embarkation was quick and efficient. Food in Windjammer and MDR was excellent. Band played great dance music and we enjoyed the recorded ballroom music in the South Pacific Lounge. Should have dance teachers hired on every cruise because there were a lot of people that like the lessons. It was lucky that Dave and Betty Begin just happened to be traveling on the ship and John Blair hired them. Debarking was also quick and efficient, customs was quick, and we were able to find all our luggage quickly. My only criticism would be about the catamaran excursion on St. Croix. The weather was very threatening and they never should have taken us out on that boat. Some people cancelled at the last minute and got their money back. I wish we would have known that because it was a miserable trip. No more ships excursions for us on future cruises. Read Less

This was our 7th cruise (Previously - 5X on Carnival Pride, 1X on Royal's Anthem). Were concerned after reading reviews and comments about this "small ship" that caters to "old people". At 51 & 56, my husband and I loved our time on the Lady G. The entire staff was outgoing and friendly and truly made us feel welcome. We even ran into Captain Thor at Starbucks one morning. He made it a point to speak to us and seemed sincere in wanting to know how we were enjoying our vacation. Although Mike, the Cruise Director, and Nick, his assistant, were heading to new ships after this sailing, they are leaving behind BIG shoes to fill. They were outstanding! The ship is small but is absolutely perfect for a relaxing vacation. It has everything you need! Ocean View Cabin 3638 was small, but we don't spend much time in our room anyway. The biggest challenge was showering. My husband is 6'7" and the bathroom does not accommodate large people well! We ate the majority of our evening meals in the main dining room. Some meals were excellent, some were just okay. The coffee was terrible! Unless you enjoy yours with a very bitter taste and many grounds floating in it, I think you would agree. Wait staff was super and made sure we were taken care of. Bartenders at the R Bar were simply the best! We purchased the beverage package this time and ordered drinks throughout the ship. A Cruise Critic member had recommended trying a BBC - which we did - and we loved it! The unfortunate thing was that they were not consistent throughout the ship. Not sure if it was a language issue, but we received drinks that were not what we asked for many times. If we had been paying as we went (rather than the package), I would have been a little upset. We spent a lot of time in the Solarium. Enjoyed the pool! They did allow children in on the colder days, but only for certain blocks of time so it was tolerable. There always seemed to be kids under 16 in the area (not in the pool), but staff members did not ask them to leave. Most were well behaved so it wasn't an issue. I'm a parent and I love kids, but it seemed as though not many moms and dads watch their kids too closely. I observed kids barreling into/out of elevators without any respect to the elderly getting on/off; kids were picking food up from the buffet without using the prongs (mom's watched but didn't say a word), etc. Kids will be kids - but simple manners would be nice. Service was incredible. We were surprised how many staff called us by name. Definitely the friendliest ship we have ever been on. We had so many awesome conversations with other guests. Everyone was so nice. It made it one of the best vacations we have ever had. We packed gym clothes, but am ashamed to admit I only went once. There was a nice assortment of cardio machines and a great view of the ocean! The entertainment was pretty good. We loved laughing at the comics. They were fabulous. I loved 70s night and the Veterans' Tribute. What an awesome way to pay homage to our military men and women. Kudos to RC for hosting this event and for providing the flag cake. The crew talent show was excellent. Brilliant idea! Nice variety for a small ship!! Everyone has different likes and dislikes, but I cannot imagine anyone that goes on this ship would not have a good time. Loved the east coast/Bahamas itinerary. We are booked on the Anthem in November 2019, but am now wishing we would have booked Grandeur instead. That said, we will go back! Read Less

We were on the 2/14 sailing. We were honestly a bit unhappy with all the itinerary changes from our original booking, and especially losing our Coco Cay day, but we were pleasantly surprised. We are not used to so many children being on Lady G, and in all honesty, I will compare my travel dates with school holidays for future trips (too many people not realizing they weren't sailing on a large ship with not much for kids). The check in process at Baltimore is always seamless. We were out of the shuttle and on the ship within 30 minutes. We had in inside stateroom, 2609, and it was just as expected. Our stateroom attendant was wonderful. This is the first time I have had an uncomfortable mattress on the ship. It was quite hard, but it wasn't unbearable. We picked deck 2 because on most of our cruises we had exited on deck 1 for all our excursions and the cabin location was very convenient to that. This cruise, we exited mostly on deck 4, so it wasn't as convenient as we had hoped. We enjoyed the food in the Windjammer and were pleasantly surprised that the ice cream machines were always working. We weren't so lucky with the Freestyle Coke machines. They were out of many flavors of soda for most of the cruise and unfortunately, the machine would pour a cup full of carbonated water and then you'd have to wait the allotted time to get a beverage. We had My Time dining. Our head server was Rajesh. That team was WONDERFUL!! They always had our drinks ready for us and a wine list available. They were very pleasant and efficient and made it a wonderful dining experience. The food in the dining room was very good. We didn't have anything we didn't enjoy. The entertainment was somewhat enjoyable. We loved the Real Time band. The singer had a TON of personality and made it a lot of fun to be in the Centrum when they were playing. Both comedians were very good. We LOVE the Royal Caribbean orchestra. What we find most lacking are the Royal Caribbean singers. Unfortunately, they were having a very difficult time staying on pitch. It was so bad we couldn't even stay. They really need to get singers who can actually sing. Singing louder when you don't know the words and can't find the pitch doesn't help. We enjoyed all the ports. We did the USS Yorktown tour in Charleston - only $12 to Uber over. We took the bus to a very crowded WDW in Port Canaveral. We absolutely LOVED Pirate's Cove in Freeport. They certainly have improved the beach every year. With the taxi, beach admission, chairs and umbrella, food and lots of beverages the excursion was $77 for both of us. We had a great time. The staff there is always very helpful and a lot of fun. So, if you're looking for an inexpensive beach day on a clean beach with clean restrooms, give Pirate's Cove a try. In Nassau we taxied over to Breezes Bahamas for an all inclusive day pass. We really like it. It's not fancy like Atlantis or Baha Mar, but we've met the nicest people and enjoyed a beautiful day at a lovely resort with beach chairs and umbrellas, full all you can drink bar, beachside grill, lunch buffet inside the hotel, pool, hot tub, non motorized water sports and much more. In Miami we took the Big Bus who's kiosk was just outside the ship. What a fun (and hot) day that was. We took both the city and beach tours, which took about 3 hours for both. We had some excitement with our bus breaking down, but they sent another one out for us. This is a hop on, hop off tour. We didn't get off until we went back to the Bayside hub where we grabbed lunch. If you're ever there - the seafood place in there is delicious. $13 for a fish and shrimp platter that was more than two of us could eat (and we didn't have breakfast as we had to get off for customs). Honestly the best fried fish I have ever eaten. We hopped back on the beach tour again and got off at SoBe. The art deco architecture is really something to see. We absolutely loved it and I think it wound up being my favorite port. This sailing was the BEST cruise director and cruise director staff we have ever encountered. Mike S outdid himself. I'm so sad this was our first experience with him and he is now headed to Symphony, but that gives us reason to sail Symphony - he was extraordinary. And the "Fountain" act the CD staff did was just hilarious. People often ask why it matters who the CD is - people like Mike are why. You can tell he takes pride in his work. Loved his magic acts, too. It's always nice to see a CD who does more than just talk! He and Captain Thor did Bad Dad Jokes which was also quite amusing. It's really nice to be on a ship where you see the captain out and about talking to the guests and participating in the activities. All in all, it was a great cruise and we'll be sailing on her again in the not too distant future. While I love the larger ships, Grandeur just feels like home. Read Less

We picked the Grandeur because it sails out of Baltimore, about an hour drive for us, and we liked the itinerary. Having most recently been on Harmony of the Seas which is massive, I appreciated the walk-ability of Grandeur; I felt I could walk the ship end to end easily and quickly. We often used the stairs. At the same time the ship felt spacious and uncrowded. The only place I had trouble getting a spot was the adults-only indoor solarium, and right before show time in the Palladium theater on one-show nights. Otherwise there were always spots to sit and lounge, especially outdoors there were always seats, from the sunny observatory on deck 10 to deck 5 shade under the life boats. -Solarium pool is open 4-6pm for kids, sometimes extra hours if weather is bad. This is great on a February cruise out of Baltimore, first and last days were too cold to swim outside. -The main pool feels a bit small, more room for wading than swimming. With beach days and a winter cruise it wasn't much of a problem, but I'd plan my pool time accordingly. -We were glad we brought water wings, my son didn't like the full body life vests provided -Solarium Park Cafe had nice snack options, especially nachos bar after 8pm -The cruise director was wonderful, we enjoyed the game shows like Love & Marriage and Weakest Link -bingo was disappointing, the smallest option was maybe $30, I couldn't just play one round. -Lots of trivia offerings, get the the Schooner Bar early as the place filled up most times -Food at Windjammer was better than I expected, especially their "ethnic corner" which changed each day. Service there was a nice surprise also, staff will bring you drinks so you have less to carry. They can also get you straws for the kids. -Main Dinning room food was average. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. On par with the quality in the buffet. Service there was very good. We aren't big on group dinning, and after the first night I asked if we could have a table to ourselves. They couldn't accommodate us that night, but the next night the Matride called us the next day saying he'd made an arrangement. I really appreciated that he took that extra step, and we enjoyed dinning room meals most evenings after that. -Blue Lagoon was excellent. Even the ride on the tender was fun, though the wait to departe was disorganized and long. We paid for a buffet lunch (one trip to the buffet only!) which was worth it. Water was calm and beautiful, it was easy to get a spot in the shade. We were able to walk around and see dolphins even though we didn’t sign up for an animal excursion. -I had a great massage at the spa -We had a lovely lunch at Izumi, at a discount because we signed up when someone was soliciting in the main dinning room. Great view up there, also uncrowded saw people eating alone which I would consider next time. My son and husband got skewers cooked on a “hot rock” table side (a lava stone according to a server, acted like a grill), steak and salmon, because they don’t like sushi, everyone was happy. -We brought a 12 pack of water bottles on board, and lots of ziplock bags. Both came in handy. -Staff overall were wonderful in engaging with my 4yo. -ADVENTURE OCEAN: The best part was that he LOVED Adventure Ocean, the kids programming. We went to the open house and registered him the day we came aboard. They have an indoor play structure with a slide and enclosed tunnel. They have books and TV. There were themes for each morning and afternoon session. Memorable themes were Wild West, Superheros, Sea Creatures. My son isn’t shy, but isn’t outgoing either, he usually takes a little time to warm up in a new place or even at a friends house. Not so with Adventure Ocean! We checked him in and he was excited to be there, barley said goodbye. We hoped to get him there once or twice during the vacation, but he ended up going almost every day, sometimes twice, he loved it so much. It ended up giving me and my husband the most relaxing vacation since he was born! We got in line about 15 minutes before each session to make sure he’d get in, as it is first come, first served. There is a cap of about 15 kids for his 3-5 Aquanats age group. Keep in mind kids have to take off their shoes when they enter the area. Most days there is a break from 12-2 between the morning and afternoon session, and from maybe 5-7 before evening session. Some days they have Adventure Dinning for lunch or dinner. The day my son was signed up, per his request…turns out he was the only kid doing it that night, so it wasn’t as fun as he hoped. We found him in a corner of the Windjammer with two staff and a whole pizza to himself! We were so happy that our son had a great time at Adventure Ocean, we left tips for the staff for his age group. Love not having to fly to cruise. Have done this cruise before and enjoy the extended time on board. The itinerary is great. We had an awesome wait staff in the dining room- Michael and Johannes. The excursions offered were very diversified. The guests are older on this extended cruise so it is not really suited for families. The food was typical Royal Caribbean food. I didn’t feel the cruise director was as good as we have had on other cruises. The whole team is eager to please and are very nice and work hard. I wish that larger ships could come into Baltimore as we miss all of the things to do on the larger ships. The slots in the casino as usual are loose on the first day or so and then they tighten them to pay nothing by the end of the cruise. Would definitely sail this cruise again. Read Less

I'll begin with a little background: We are a married couple, both 51, and generally cruise once a year. Our favorite ship so far has been Anthem of the Seas, we have sailed on Oasis, Liberty and Grandeur as well. This trip was our third time on Grandeur. We picked it for the itinerary (mainly length of it - LOVE 12 nights), location (Baltimore extremely easy for us) and cost. As we have been on board "Lady G" before, we knew what to expect, but if you're reading this to get a feel for what the cruise will be like, the main thing to know is that this cruise really skews older. At our ages, we were definitely on the younger side. I saw only a handful of kids. This is exactly what we like - our "kid days" are done, and nothing like being surrounded by people older then you to make you feel young! ;-) Now if you were to go in the summer or during a school break, I'm sure the crowd will change, but for a mid February, 12 night, I feel pretty safe with predicting the same type of cruisers. With that in mind, some *generalized* observations: LOTS of diamond and above members. This affects the sailing due to the size of the diamond lounge. Basically the South Pacific Lounge is booked every day from 4:30-8:00. Grandeur is a small ship, and activity locations are limited. So your options are the theater show or whatever is going on in Centrum. There may be some trivia on the early end in the Schooner bar, but that is all. Also, as this is a February cruise the first few days at sea generally tend to be cooler. The Solarium is PRIME real estate. For people who have a problem with "chair hogs" be prepared! We are early risers - like to hit the gym first thing in the morning. By 5:30am there were towels on half of the chairs. Completely filled by 7:00 am. We just chuckled to ourselves and shook our heads. Earliest observation was one morning at 4:30 am - towels in place! And same folks all the time- recognize the hats - not necessarily the people, because of course they don't show up until much later... But as I said, we just shake our heads - doesn't bug us as much as others. At the end of the cruise did observe someone complain and staff actually pick up some things, but won't happen as a routine. As to the ship itself, Grandeur is older and smaller, but still offers a wonderful trip for us. Kept extremely clean, large emphasis on hand gel - always staff on hand at Windjammer entrance ensuring people "washy-washy". One of the aspects I love best about the ship is that it is easy to "find the ocean". My biggest disappointment with the Oasis is that while it is fun to have all the different venues and activities, everything faces inside, making it hard to see the ocean. As we usually book interior cabins, we really appreciate all the windows and views that Grandeur offers. Also, be prepared to feel the ocean more. Especially during this time of year. If there are any waves, you will feel them. The food and service are pretty consistent with other ships, with the exception of the fact that a smaller ship allows the staff to get to know you quicker. Especially for us, the bartenders were extremely friendly. We buy the drink package, and LOVED that we never had to sign a slip of paper with each drink order. We prefer to give our additional tips in cash, so appreciated not having to deal with signing. Not sure if this is just for Grandeur or not, but on previous cruises have always had paper slips to sign. We ate breakfast and lunch at Windjammer, and it was fine. Pretty standard buffet - nice selection, and appreciate the breakfast egg/omelet station. The dining room is where you see the most change. I appreciate Royal's attempt to keep cruising affordable (at least for us) and acknowledge that some things have to give. So don't expect it to be a "high-end" dining experience. The staff has been cut, and while they work extremely hard it is noticeable. The menus reflect it as well, with fewer choices (my parents always loved the chilled soup appetizers - on this sailing only 1 soup offered 1 evening). But the food is decent - some items better then others - but certainly not anything a true "foodie" should expect. We do not eat at the specialty restaurants, so can't offer any info on them. We were at sea during the Super Bowl. It was our first full day at sea, which is usually the first formal night, but they rescheduled it to the following night which I really appreciated (I like dressing up :-). They showed the game throughout the ship, including the theater, outside screen and bars. They had some different food stations set up, but were standard buffet choices, nothing special. Prior to this cruise I was curious about room service as I had never ordered it, and was searching for some good "bar food" to eat during the game. I can now recommend the chicken fingers and burger. Far better then buffet offerings. The chicken wings were ok, but hubby wanted them spicier (more bar-b-que then hot). Room service does have a fee - but it is a standard fee, can order as much as you want for set amount. We love cruising, and Grandeur is a nice ship. In my opinion if you do a little research, and have an idea of what to expect, it will only help make your trip a success. Don't expect to be waited on hand and foot, or be looking for exotic, over the top food - if that is what you want, look for a higher end line. Read Less

We wanted to escape the colder period for winter for a few days, were looking for an economical trip, and needed a few more nights to reach RCL's Diamond status. We also love cruising from Baltimore and have been on Grandeur many times. My wife's long-range forecast was excellent and we managed to miss the late Jan cold snap and a light snowstorm. We've been to most of the ports before, so this was also intended to be a more relaxing cruise. Traveled with friends, although we all made our own dinner plans. Our cabin was interior, Deck 3 midships. Location is very convenient to forward and aft stairs and elevators, easy to get to MDR and Centrum, and quiet. Never heard our neighbors. MDR: We were 1st seating at a 6-seat with a couple from SoCAL and 2 older women from PA. We got along fabulously. Fnu and Naomi were the wait staff, they were excellent! Restored our faith in the MDR service [which had suffered a serious jolt from our expectations during our 12-night cruise early December]. So we never bothered to try the specialty restaurants. One of our travel companions has serious dietary restrictions and was happy with the MyTime service - they were able to meet all the necessary accommodations. We usually had breakfast and lunch in the MDR, Windjammer for lunch on port days. We had breakfast in WJ once or twice, very pleased with selections and would have been fine with WJ as the only breakfast option. On port days, MDR breakfast did not have the ceral, fruit, and waffle bar, which was disappointing. They resumed having it for Nassau and the 2 at sea days. We also visited WJ after dinner a few times to check the desserts and selections - several times, we thought the WJ had better desserts. CD was Mike M, with Nick as his AD. They had a great back and forth, and we enjoyed Mike's magic tricks at the start of the evening shows. Mike had to leave the ship at Nassau for an RCCL conference; Nick and the rest of the team ably picked up and kept things going quite well. Nick may have as much energy and enthusiasm as "Torando" Tanya when she was AD on Grandeur (anyone who's met Tanya knows this is high praise). Hope he has a long successful future at Royal and I expect Mike will be a CD someday. We heard that Mike is going to be going to Symphony of the Seas later this year. The ship had problems with the stage equipment, so several shows were rescheduled or modified and we had additional performances by the ship's band (excellent as always) and the singers. Most of the headliner acts (singer, juggler, magician) were good to great. The last headliner act was "Tribute Shmibute" which took a bit getting used to. We saw the current Broadway tribute and All Access before in December, so they were well done though nothing new for us. The crew talent show as a pleasant surprise - quite good, especially the singers and the comedy sketches. On-board services were great, the ship justly deserves it's reputation as friendliest ship in the fleet. Grandeur is also well-maintained; we saw it's sister Enchantment alongside in Nassau and Grandeur's exterior appearance was far better. Onboard entertainment is great, and as dancers, particularly the ship's band, Real Time Band, and the singer/piano player in the Schooner Bar. RT is going to be on GoS a bit longer before going to one of the bigger ships. They've expanded their play list (as we also noticed in December) which we appreciate - after a while, just doing rumbas and chachas gets old. We especially liked the night the ships band did a big band (and more) dance concert in South Pacific - it is a much better and larger dance floor, appreciated by the serious dancers. (If you were on the trip with us, we were one of the couples up dancing a lot, and the young lady is one of the friends travelling with us (and an accomplished dancer herself), not our daughter :) ! We pretty much did things on our own on-board and in port. There were no enrichment lectures (miss them) and one dance lesson taught by the show team dancers. There were also some line dance classes which were well taught and a friend really liked the Thriller class and performance. Ports: Charleston, we walked around with another couple, shopped the market area (if you go, look for the woman selling "hurricane art" - painted slates and bricks, about 2/3 back on the north side, and a glass shop that makes clever serving trays and wedding gifts from liquor and wine bottles!) Interesting museums include an Arsenal from the colonial period and the Slavery museum. Several architecturally interesting churches on Church street. Port Canaveral: Friends who've retired to the area met us and we went to KSC for the space center tour. You can literally spend all day there. In spite of the day-long downpour, we took the bus back to the Apollo museum. You'll see the re-assembled Saturn V firing room, a complete Saturn V (FLIGHT-qualified hardware that could have launched another moon mission), the Apollo 11 landing exhibit (which was having problems with the main projection screen during our show) and the Apollo 1 fire memorial. [We were there on the anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire and day before anniversary of the Challenger disaster, but other than seeing flags at half staff, there was no mention which was VERY disappointing to me.] We also visited the Atlantis Space Shuttle exhibit. You could spend many hours there and it is very well done. If you have ANY interest in the US history of space exploration, remember the "space race", GO. I'm hoping in a few years they have some exhibits on what we are doing in space TODAY, vs. long ago. Miami: FINALLY a (sort of) NICE DAY. We took the on/off shuttle from the pier to Biscayne Blvd, walked over to the Bayside mall and took an 90 minute harbor tour. This may be the best deal in Miami to see the area on a nice day. Very nice and there are some incredible yachts and mansions in Miami harbor. Shopped a bit in the mall and easy walk via the causeway bridge back to the ship for a very late lunch. Freeport. Meh. Almost a beach day - took taxi to Port Lacaya market area and walked over to the beach, walked it a bit until it started raining. Back to the market and my wife did some shopping, then we grabbed a snack and drinks at one of the bars. I think I'd have just as happy with going to CocoCay instead. There is a cluster of shops and markets at the port, selection felt same stuff as in every other straw market. A former Carnival ship was also in port, and we could see several ships in dry dock or maintenance pier across the harbor (at least 2 RCL, 1 NCL, and 1 Princess). While at Port L, we were told the casino is going to reopen "soon" and the hotel may reopen later. Nice location and a decent beach. Nassau: Walked over to the water taxi and took it ($8 r/t per person) to Paradise Island. Then wandered about following a group from the water taxi into the shops near the marina and into the Atlantis complex. A helpful staff member walked us through to the correct exit to the to the public beach. YES, FINALLY A BEACH DAY! Bargained for 2 chairs and an umbrella ($25, many vendors asking more) and then got some drinks from another vendor. They're definitely hustling. Water was very rough, so almost no one was going into or past the surf line. Afterwards, we walked down the beach to the Atlantis property and in where we could see the lagoon, "Water Adventure", walked through the casino (big and except for windows looks like every other casino I've walked through), got redirected by Atlantis security back through the casino, and finally found our way out via the marina area and the shops. Glad we saw a bit of Atlantis and that we didn't pay what they want for a day pass (overpriced in my opinion). Took the water taxi back and did some shopping in town. We've been to Nassau before, saw NO indications of any security issues but we also stuck to the main shopping area. There were several ships in port, including Enchantment (the previous Baltimore ship) and the Anthem. Also an NCL ship. Noted that the Grandeur is in much better exterior shape vs. the Enchantment. We did not take any of the ship excursions, but the shore excursion, activities, and guest services staffs were quite helpful with suggestions. Sea Days: Generally cold for outside activities except the day after Nassau. Had 2 semi-rough days around Port Canaveral and Miami, return trip was exceptionally smooth for those waters this time of year. Ship ran a bunch of activities on the last 2 sea days, including the egg drop competition, Thriller performance, Grandeur Carnival, paper airplane contest (mine flew well but decided to make a right turn into the crowd). Disappointed they didn't have a lecturer on board this trip, but the few sea days vs the 12 night cruises may be a factor. One thing we like about Baltimore is the easy on and off. Check in was straight forward, a few minutes delay while some higher priority guests got checked in. Getting off was ridiculously easy, and I was pleased there was just a little dry snow on my car and I didn't need the boots or shovel! We achieved diamond status (in terms of nights needed) during the trip, but can't take advantage of it until the NEXT trip. We think RCL could do something (not the full diamond benefits) to encourage folks and welcome us to the next level without waiting for the next trip. Overall a great trip and we're looking forward to our next GoS and RCL vacations. Read Less

We joined the Grandeur of the Seas in Baltimore following a 4 day stay in New York and, after the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, it is the best decision we made. New York was great, it was our first visit, but the pace a bit too fast for us and we knew on viewing the ship for the first time that our holiday had really began. Embarkation went smoothly and quickly and we were made to feel welcome from the minute we handed our luggage over at the port. We were on the ship within 20 minutes of arriving. Staterooms were ready at 1.00pm and luggage had already been delivered. The cabin steward introduced himself and did a great job throughout the trip. Food in the Windjammer and main diningroom was varied and tasty, yes there were some dishes which were not to our liking, but that is not a negative comment as there was a mix of nationalities being catered for. We did not use the speciality restraunts so cannot comment. Entertainment staff were very interactive with passengers throughout the trip and could usually be seen at one or other venue on the ship day and night. This said there was always plenty of quiet spots to sit and read. The ship docked close to all ports visited all of which we enjoyed except the weather which was not good to us!!!! The service throughout the ship was excellent and all staff had a ready smile and happy to talk to cruisers. We had flown from Scotland to be on this cruise and were the only Scottish couple on board. We met with so many lovely American people who took the time to chat with us and if you were one of them we thank you for adding to the joy of this cruise, you are a lovely nation of people. Everything went very smoothly ! Our 30 year old son and his gf were with us and they had a wonderful time even though most of the guests are elderly . Can't wait to sail on her again ! Our room attendant Ida was great . Also loved our waitstaff Johannes Salmen and Erhon. We always ate in the dining room . Didn't step one foot into the windjammer. The food was excellent ! We enjoyed being waited on so always went to main dining room ! Will definitely sail with royal Caribbean again ! Loved that we could just drive to the terminal in 2 and half hours. This was our third time on th Grandeur the first time being in January 1999. Three years ago we also were on in January. We had breakfast every morning in the windjammer and Salmen our waiter was usually there taking my omelet order. We had lunch in the dining room a few days for the wonderful salad that was prepared. We only dined in the main dining room every night. We had Salmen, Johannes and Ehron who all excelled. We clebrated our anniversary and my birthday onboard. Everyone was very friendly and outgoing. Never had a problem with anyone. I spent almost every evening in the Schooner Lounge when the piano play Ross Leadbeater entertained the young and old alike. He was very well received by all and did an amazing performance every night. We did not attend a lot of the shows as we like to do our own thing. On the islands we would get off and usually just walk around ourselves without taking any excursions. We enjoyed sitting in the Centrum and listening or watching the shows. We met a lot of nice people on this trip. We stayed at Fairfield Inn in White Marsh that provided shuttle service. We were onboard by 10 AM easiest embarktion ever. We walked off at 740 AM and was met by the shuttle. This also was the easiest disembarktion out of 12 cruises. Only negative was we had to return to our cold weather again. Read Less

This was our 3rd cruise on the Grandeur. The crew is great across the ship. Our first Jr suite and aft to boot. Our stateroom attendant, Ikomang? was always around when needed and kept our ice bucket full and our room tidy. We spent more time in the specialty restaurants than the MDR. The food was very good at all. We went twice to Izumi, twice to Giavannis and once to Chops. Casino staff was friendly, the tables not so much. We enjoyed the daily evening entertainment, particularly the singer, Kenny James, the comedian Naster and, as always, the singers, dancers and orchestra. We saw all 3 shows for Naster, He was very funny and had a great message. There was constantly something going on in the Centrum also. We like the Baltimore port due to it being nearby to us. Stayed again at the BW+ on O'Donnell which allows parking and KD Elite shuttle each way. It was a great stay and there were no issues with the parking. Read Less

He kept ice in our ice bucket the entire cruise. We did a few excursions through the cruise company. They were all great. We were expecting more wear on the ship from other reviews we have read about her. We thought everything looked great! The dining in the main dining room was something we looked forward to every night! Our waiter, Vincent, and assistant waiter, Manoj, were both very attentive and kind. The entertainment exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed a show or comedy act each night after dinner. We also joined in on a few games, which were equally exciting. The Great Gatsby Dining Room is staffed by great waiters and is elegant in decor. The CD on this particular cruise was Mike (Polish name) and he was awesome. Our room was very clean and very nice, but wish the beds were higher to slide our luggage under. I still wish they had better hair dryers. I also feel that they should make the showtimes 7:30 and 9:30 instead of 7 and 9. We always seem to be rushed through early dining to get to the first show and even if we make it seats are pretty much gone by the times we finish dessert. We rarely can stay up for the later show as we have busy days and tire easily. Read Less

The holiday sailing on Grandeur of the Seas met our needs as it aligned perfectly with my break at work and we like the Baltimore port’s proximity to our house. We pulled out of our driveway at 11:45 and were in our cabin by 1:30. This was our fifth time and our second holiday sailing on the Grandeur, the first being last year on a slightly different itinerary. This year we went to St. Croix (last year was St. Thomas), Antigua, St. Lucia (Martinique last year), St. Kitts, and Sint Maarten. As in previous experiences with the Baltimore port, everything went very smoothly – only a few cars ahead of us to check our bags, no line inside the terminal for the metal detector or to check in. And right up the back-and-forth gangplank and onto the ship. There was the usual boarding day elevator delay as some elevators were being used for luggage transport. We got to our cabin, took the standard photos of our cabin to post on the web, and went off to Park Café for our traditional embarkation-day roast beef sandwich lunch and our first food disappointment of the cruise – they had turkey instead of roast beef!!!!! We were told they alternated among turkey, roast beef, and pork, but we found roast beef only once so we must have forgotten to check every day. Cabin: We were in cabin 8548, a mid-ship Junior Suite on the starboard side. This cabin (and its port-side equivalent, 8048) has the advantage of being opposite a right-angle passage from the mid-ship staircase lobby, avoiding corridor traffic and lobby noise. Like all cabins on Grandeur, it feels dated with its blond wood and green upholstered furniture (which actually is quite comfortable). The Junior Suite has more storage than most other cabin classes, with three drawers in the triple door closet, six drawers in the desk area, plus a few more drawers and cabinets opposite the closet. There are also two chairs and a convertible sofa with a coffee table and two ottomans (with removable tops for more storage). The bathroom had a bathtub, harder to get in and out of than a walk-in shower, but with the trade-off of more space for showering. We also had a balcony with two chairs and a table. This is a very comfortable cabin for the two of us and has plenty of space for company to come visit. Food: We ate most dinners in the Great Gatsby main dining room or Windjammer, my go-to spot for breakfast as well. (The continental breakfast options on the free room service menu are limited but sufficient. Delivery was often before or after the half hour selected; a few times they called before delivery. We didn’t get any coffee or tea since the Junior Suite has coffee/tea service in the cabin.) The dining room food was good, but the selection options were a major disappointment from previous sailings on Grandeur. The MDR dinner menus no longer offered a daily chilled soup and the only salad offering was Caesar Salad – EVERY NIGHT! (There were a very few other salads offered during a few of the 12 nights but generally, they were specialty salads and there was no garden greens salad option.) Last year, the “every night starters” consisted of Caesar Salad, Escargot, Shrimp Cocktail, and French Onion Soup. This year, they added a Seasonal Fruit Medley every night as well. But the trade-off was the loss of a different salad and chilled soup each night, and a reduction in the other appetizer selections from three to two. The main course options were reduced as well. Last year we had five “every night” options, reduced this year to three, and the varying options were reduced as well. Desserts also had only two or three changing items each night plus the standard chocolate cake, apple pie, cheesecake, ice cream (always vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry), and crème brûlée. The appetizer fruit plate served as a nice dessert if nothing on the dessert menu was interesting. We found the menus so boring that we occasionally ate dinner in Windjammer just to get some variety. Service was slow the first night but improved when the maître ď suggested that all the waiters serve the smaller (two-person) tables before the larger groups. We ate dinner in the Windjammer three times because of the international offerings those nights – one was Indian and another South American. The Indian food was excellent and varied, the South American not so much. Windjammer at night is a nice place to eat as it is usually quieter and the large windows all around provide nice views of passing ships. And there often are sightings of officers and their families in Windjammer. Ship overall: Grandeur is a lovely ship with artwork in all of the stateroom corridors and in all of the stairway landings. The ship is very bright and open feeling with lots of glass in almost every venue. I could usually find a chaise in a quiet shady spot on deck, my preferred spot on a cruise. The Solarium indoor pool area was crowded most days, but seemed to empty out around 4 PM every day, when I would go for a swim in the indoor pool. Entertainment: We tend to skip most ship entertainment because the volume level hurts our ears. Some of the music sounded like something we might enjoy but not enough to justify the hearing damage. Ports: St. Croix: We have been to St. Croix several times and in the past have gone to Sandcastle on the Beach resort for some beach time. We decided to try Rainbow Beach this year. The beach seemed larger than Sandcastle, but had many more people. We did not try the food in the restaurant. We will return to Sandcastle on our next visit to St. Croix. Antigua: We went with a group to BeachLimerZ on Fort James Beach, a ten-minute taxi ride from the port. The beach was very nice and the food and service were excellent. We might go there again – or try another of Antigua’s 365 beaches. St. Lucia: We took the water taxi across the bay to town and went to the Cathedral and Derek Walcott Square, attractions we enjoyed on previous visits. (Restoration of the Cathedral continues, though there is still quite a way to go.) St. Kitts: We had nothing planned for St. Kitts, as we have been there several times and toured the entire island. This turned to be an accidentally wise choice as it rained on and off almost all day. Sint Maarten: We took a ship excursion to the beach at The American Greenhouse on Simpson Bay. This was a lovely beach with water sports and a nice restaurant with good food. Overall experience: We lucked out with great weather for most of the cruise, with the only rainy day being on the port day at St. Kitts. The seas were calm for the entire trip, making things even better. As always, the staff and crew on Grandeur were friendly and provided great service. The only complaints we had were about the dinner menu selections, addressed above, and that RCI has decided not to offer the 12-night itinerary for at least the next two holiday seasons. But we’ll be back for another cruise at a different time of the year. Read Less
