We wanted to explore Rome, Barcelona, and points in between; this cruise afforded us the opportunity to travel safely and with few worries. The Viking Star was the cleanest ship imaginable, and our cabin was immaculate. Staff members Made and Maha kept it that way the entire cruise, and accommodated our few special requests. We enjoyed all restaurants and cuisine we tried -- World Cafe, Manfredi's, and the Chef's Table. Dining al fresco was a special treat for the four of us. We enjoyed lectures available on board, and also the evening entertainment in the Star Lounge. An unexpected acknowledgment and recognition of the Viking staff on our last night onboard by the cruise director was a very poignant moment. (Good job!) The spa was a favorite activity, as was the infinity pool. Shore excursions were exceptional, if not a little tiring. We were very impressed with very smooth embarkation and disembarkation experiences, thanks to Viking's top-notch staff. And we look forward to our next Viking cruise! Read Less

We loved the ambience of the ship - light Danish wood, great excursions, excellent service, great food ( esp. in the main dining area - awesome buffet)! Specialty dining rooms were ok but service not quite as top notch. We also liked the spa - good pools, hot, cold, and rippling, rooms were spacious as was bathroom. Loved heated floors. Washer/dryer facilities good too. The “included beers and wines” were more than adequate and the staff made you feel special no matter what you drank. Algeria was amazing bee took 2 tours with tour leaders from different generations. Thus we got 2 different perspectives on the government, etc. We did the 2 day Rome addition. Viking concierge based at the hotel was great and actually chased after us to make sure the restaurant she rec. would seat us!! We are sailing with Viking again 6/19 on new ship Jupiter to Norway! We chose this cruise for the itinerary and reputation of the cruise line. Once we landed in Rome everything was flawless. However, dealing with Viking in the U.S. was very frustrating. We had originally booked a cruise to Cuba and cancelled it after they made several port changes. We wanted to use the "cancel for any reason" Viking insurance to cover some of the cost of this trip. It took 4 months to get the voucher approved, submitted and our money refunded, only after my agent did a manual override. The insurance is expensive and worthless. We were also given no information about the post cruise as it wasn't available so we booked our own tour in Barcelona. We were told in the U.S. that the shore team would transport our luggage to the hotel so we could go on our excursion. NOT TRUE! Once onboard we were given no help with this and told we would need to arrange for and pay to have our bags shipped once we docked and get ourselves to Barcelona. Since we paid for transfers and were told stateside it wouldn't be a problem that hardly seemed fair and not consistent with their image of customer service. Finally, Viking Air....it is very hit and miss. Our airlines changed our connecting flights and I had to fight with Viking to arrange another way to fly since it was clear I would miss our connection. When we finally got the flights arranged and I checked a day before we were to leave our seats had disappeared on one portion of the flight. I finally called the airlines myself to fix it. Some of the Viking Air people are helpful and others misinformed and indifferent. Again, it was the most amazing cruise ever (room, service, food, ports, embarkation), and the ship experience was flawless. Regarding the whole arrangement experience I have had much better and less stressful experiences on Holland America and Carnival. Read Less

We had done the China cruise/tour several years ago and loved it so, when I saw that Viking was going to build ocean-going vessels, I signed us up immediately. This Rome to Barcelona cruise is very different from the China trip. We loved that trip very much because of the historical sites we were able to see, but found that it was very busy with excursions, although wonderful, which were somewhat tiring. This trip is much more relaxing with a single excursion in each port. Our only complaint with this trip's excursions is that there was little time spent in each port, so that the choice of excursions was greatly reduced from what Viking had shown on the website- a huge disappointment. Also we like to spend time on our own in visited ports, but because of the short time in each port, we had little opportunity to do that. The Viking Star is a gorgeous ship. Everything about it is spectacular, from the wide variety of places to relax, to the pool area, to the restaurants. For a relatively small ship, the number and quality of the dining areas is superb. Since we love eating al fresco, we were pleasantly surprised with the number of times we were able to eat outside even though it was February. In general the food and service were excellent. Our Deluxe Veranda room was wonderful, although there were a few stains in the rug which we thought should have been taken care of before we got to our cabin. Overall, we were delighted with the cruise and ship. Viking has made this an incredible value, especially when compared to the Seabourn Quest cruise we had done several years ago. We loved that cruise, but this is nearly as opulent at half the price. Read Less

We had never been on a cruise and my husband chose this one because of the area and Vikings history and reputation. It was WONDERFUL and we would do it again. The cabin was roomy and very clean. We had a veranda and room very well lit my husband enjoyed the TV. Service to the room was fantastic. Bathroom was very accommodating. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Disbarkation and embarkation to ports and shore excursions went smoothly without incident. We enjoyed all the excursions The food and drink was excellent. I have to have gluten free and every restaurant tried to accommodate this diet restriction. We did not travel with children nor did we attend any entertainment on board. We enjoyed the excursions so much we were tired. The weather was great as well. The tour guides were friendly and very knowledgeable about their subject. Especially enjoyed Pompeii tour and the Roman city under Barcelona. Traveling at night was great because I never knew we were on the water. The ship had 860 people aboard which was nice and not a large crowd aboard We were able to meet and talk with so many people from all over the world. Meeting us at the airport and seeing us off for home was very helpful. They even packed us breakfast because we had to leave the hotel so early in the morning for the airport . And mine was gluten free. How thoughtful. We would travel with Viking again in a heart beat. Read Less

We only had one problem on this entire cruise and it was a relatively minor one. We chose to arrange our own transportation from the Rome Airport to the Civitavecchia port. It was a taxi cab and the entrance to the part of the port where the ship boards was blocked by security for some unknown reason. In retrospect we should have asked the cab driver to translate for us and find out how to board the ship. We could see the ship but it was not clear which path to take to find it, and we got a bit lost even though we knew exactly where the ship was located. In the end we found a bus, which was free, and got on board in plenty of time before the cruise began. Besides that small incident, everything else was fantastic and "as advertised"! Food, locations, ship, staff, excursions - all top notch. Would definitely do a cruise like that one again in the future. A small issue with limited choice for vegetarians in the restaurants, but the buffet style food did have good selections. From the brochure, it appeared that the ship was large, but once we got settled it was easy to find our way around. They have good maps and signs as well as TV monitors that explain a wide variety of things about the cruise and the ship. Every day there is a "debriefing" which were always excellent. If you missed an onboard lecture, don't worry because they are recorded and easy to play back on the TV in the stateroom. Read Less

This was our first time sailing with Viking Ocean Cruises and I have to say it was by far the best cruise we have ever taken. We have sailed before on the regular cruise lines and were very impressed by all that Viking had to offer. We were met at the airport in Rome and taken by bus to the port of embarkation in Civitavecchia. Our checkin was quick and efficient. We were greeted as we embarked the ship and quickly found our cabin. Our room attendant greeted us warmly and gave us a rundown on the cabin. The cabins are comfortable and each has a balcony. the bathrooms have heated floors and are larger than what you find on a regular cruise line. The closet space is very ample and there are many more choices of what you can watch on TV. We ate at 4 of the restaurants on board (The World Cafe, The Kitchen, Manfredi's and the pool bar). There was plenty of variety and all was delicious! I am not one for having my picture taken everytime you turn around and was glad that there were no photographers around taking pictures on the ship or everytime you disembarked. We sailed from Civitavecchia to Naples, Italy; Messina, Sicily; Trapani, Sicily; Cagliari, Sardinia; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Valencia and disembarking in Barcelona. Our original itinerary was to take us to Tunisia but due to heightened security we were instead given an extra day in Sicily. Each port was beautiful and full of so much history. In Trapani we visited a city that was located up in the mountains. We were literally in the clouds walking on cobblestone streets and seeing two castles. The views from the mountaintop to seeing Trapani were extraordinary! On Palma de Mallorca we visited another town in the mountains called Valdemossa. This was my favorite place! We visited what was once a monastery and where Frederic Chopin and the french writer George Sand once lived. All of the excursions were very well run. What we paid in price for a cruise that was all inclusive and a great airfare were well worth the price. We are definitely looking forward to taking another ocean cruise and have already booked a River excursion. Read Less

We decided to take the Mediterranean cruise because we wanted to see the ports of call (they ended up cancelling the Tunis stop which was very disappointing) especially Barcelona. We went there first for 5 days prior to the cruise...then flew over to Rome to catch the ship on our own. The embarkation area was very confusing and no one seemed to be able to help us when we first got to a Viking station. The meals in the main dining room (The Restaurant) were so bad, we only ate there 2 times and both times left feeling great disappointment with the preparation of the food and the service from the wait staff. We did enjoy the 2 specially restaurants but ended up eating all the rest of our meals at the World Grill. The included excursions were short (we rode on the buses almost as long as we were on the actual tour) and poorly planned. We felt that after paying so much for the cruise, we would just take the included tours...bad choice. The guides were limited in their knowledge of the ports and we had very little time to shop or explore on our own. We have been on Viking River Cruises and loved them (have 2 more planned in the next year) but we will probably not go on another Ocean Cruise...trust me there is a big difference. The common areas never seemed crowded and the ship was beautifully appointed but the whole experience lacked the kind and friendly service we have had on the river cruises. We hope Viking is not getting too big too fast and leaving behind their personal service and attention to detail that we felt on our prior river cruises. Read Less

At end of cruise would be nice to have some time in Barcelona, like what was missing at start of cruise. Entertainment was ok, more movies would be good. The one restaurant that was serving alternative prepared foods was not to our liking. Steak at the other restaurant was outstanding. Definitely would go again, the Euro zone is too scary right now for our taste. Other parts of the world would appeal to us currently. This was our first ocean cruise, loved the ship, destinationa were good, excursions were ok. Loved the buffet area, should be open more hours. The cruise went to ports we had not seen and we were extremely pleased with the shore excursions which were included in the cost of the cruise. All of the services, food, accommodations, and comfort were truly FIRST CLASS. Viking has far exceeded our expectations. It seems that Viking put their "spies" on all of the other cruise lines and copied every single positive and favorable amenity, and found every possible negative and unfavorable experience and made sure that those things were eliminated from the Viking Star. One of the best things was that there were no passengers under the age of 18 on the ship. We felt so pampered as we experienced thrill after thrill of comfort and truly exceptional cruise amenities. We were so please that we have booked another cruise on the Viking Star a 15 day Mediterranean cruise November 2017 to the Cities of Antiquity (Greece) and the Holy Land. And we have booked a Viking River cruise for this December - Amsterdam to Basel to do the CHRISTMAS MARKETS! Read Less

Hadn't been to the islands before. Ship was beautiful. Our cabin was over the top great. Food was interesting and very good, Had a hard time keeping portions down so we didn't become as big as a whale! Service was wonderful. Everyone was pleasant and courteous. Our room stewards were very helpful in getting to know how things operated in our cabin and were so much fun to talk with . They told us a little of where they live when not on board ship. The ports were interesting although it would have been nice to see some other things in some of the ports. I realize that the church is the center of their world and that they are quite proud of them with good reason, They are beautiful and it took years to build at great cost to the congregation. We did enjoy the excursion about the Marsala wine and then we went to an olive farm. It was quite interesting. We had no idea that the trees were so old and made such attractive pieces of art and scenery. And seeing the oranges grow nearby gave a wonderful view. I saw a bush that looked like a small pine bush only to discover it was a huge Rosemary plant! Didn't know they could grow so big and last so long. One of the reasons we travel anytime but summer is that we encounter fewer children. We had four children and six grandchildren. Now we have great grandson who is absolutely tops so it's not that we don't like children, it's that we enjoy the calmness of trips with minimal children. Would I take the same trip again? Probably not for there is so much more to see. I'm sorry we couldn't make the trip when you cross the Atlantic to the USA. We and two others were ready for that to be our next trip. We were already booked on another trip for time period. But we will keep watch to see if you run that trip again. I hope so. Read Less

we loved the locations the ship was going to and we felt the Mediterranean would be good weather for Jan, the weather was great. ship and food were great, the excursions and guides were very informed and good. my wife and i loved the ship ---- it was not to big but yet had more to offer then the river cruise boats. the cabins were also much nicer i enjoyed the size of the cabins and the balcony. your crew was friendly as always and were always ready to help. my wife and i enjoyed the live entertainment and watching the movies . i think my favorite place on the ship was the Explores Lounge -- late in the evening a nice cocktail and pleasant music put the finishing touch on a great day. another place on board that we enjoyed was the bar / grill area by the pool. the hot dog was wonderful. the ship was just beautiful, i'm in construction and it was a pleasure to see all of the attention to detail that this ship has. the welds, glass and wood were placed by craftsmen not just workmen. we already have reservations for next Jan to sail the east Indies for 10 nights on board. only one little thing --- the bacon just wasn't up to our good old Farmland standards. but the steaks and specialty foods were fantastic. the viking staff took care of all of our trip -- our flight was handled nicely and the disembarkation went very smoothly. as i said, we already have another trip planned and can't wait to see the Viking crew again. We are not generally ocean "cruise" people. The ships are too large; the atmosphere to chaotic; it's a challenge to beat other guests to the entertainment or the best dining times and spaces. There is small opportunity to get to meet other guests because of the sheer number of people always crowded around. But the Viking Star is such a different experience from the typical ocean ships. We felt like guests in a private resort. There was never a feeling of being rushed, or herded into dining rooms, or being a number instead of a welcomed patron. Once on board, we quickly learned the layout of the ship. It's many options for dining, relaxing, and enjoyment were more than sufficient without being overwhelming. Our mid-range stateroom was very generous, quiet and comfortable. We were impressed by the heated floors in the bath area. We were always able to attend a lecture or entertainment without fear of not being seated. My husband and I each found activities to enjoy with and without each other. Our meals were very good, and we enjoyed having the choice each evening to dine together or with new acquaintances. Although we had visited some of the ports in the past, the optional excursions offered unique things to see and do. The staff was outstanding. We enhanced the trip with a post-cruise stay in Barcelona. The city was easy to navigate and offered many interesting art and cultural sites. The trip was an excellent start to my husband's retirement! Read Less

This cruise from Rome to Barcelona included several islands that we hadn't been to in the western Mediterranean. It also was a winter getaway, so we experienced some really nice (and warmer) weather than northeastern US at that time. This was our first trip on Viking, and we found the idea of sailing on a new ship of great interest. We loved that the ship was relatively small and did NOT have many of the "amenities" of the larger ships, such as smoking, casino, photographer, etc. The staterooms with their verandas and spacious (the biggest we've ever encountered in our cruise travels) bathrooms. We loved the casual dress and open seating in the restaurants. We did, however, dress up for new year's eve--the staff put on a great party and celebration for everyone. The restaurants and food were fabulous. We loved the two pools, one with the retractable roof and the other in the spa area, which was like a giant jacuzzi. Entertainment and port tours were great. We were glad not to be "nickel and dimed," so we appreciated the included tours, internet, specialty restaurants, and tips. We would highly recommend Viking oceangoing cruises and can't wait to take our first Viking river cruise in the near future. Read Less

We had an excellent experience on the new Viking Star. Our experience is with over 10 cruises with various cruise lines. This is definitely one of the best, if not the best, cruise ships that we've been on over the past 17 years of cruising. We liked the fact that many things were included in the price--excursions, internet, water bottles each time we left the ship, certain spa amenities, tips, wine at lunch and dinner, specialty restaurants, etc.--that avoided being "nickel and dimed" with everything. We found it as good, if not better, than our favorite cruise line, Renaissance. As it turned out, there were no children aboard, and we saw no one smoking. We really liked the open seating dining and no extra charge for specialty restaurants. The cuisine was excellent, as were the choices available. The food was healthy. We were happy to have no casino and no ship's photographer on board. the New Year's Eve party was great. There were a few things that could be better: There was no music available on the stateroom TV, and it would have helped to have more info on weather conditions at the upcoming port. The news stations weren't that great--I would recommend CNN and CNN Headline News be added. The front desk wasn't always up to date on ship's info--we knew about a change of schedule before they did, for example. The shops were a bit of an "overkill"--really, how many diamond rings am I expected to buy on a cruise?! I would have liked to see more amenities and clothes for sale instead of fine jewelry. There was no designated library--books were all over the place and not organized. Read Less

Beautiful ship, attentive crew, absolutely fantastic food! The ship has a lot of quiet areas, which is nice if you want to get a small group together for cards, etc. I was sorry that the main pool was out of commission for most of week, but the thermal pool was available. Small, not for laps. I had a problem getting in and out of the hot tub because the intervals between steps were very steep. The outdoor infinity pool looked inviting, but it was a little too chilly to take advantage of it. There are so many food choices in my favorite restaurant on board, World Café. I only went to one other restaurant, the Chef's Table. This was the "dress up" place to eat, but I had a disappointing piece of dry salmon. But the World Café had everything you could possible want for any meal of the day. As for the complimentary tours, they were o.k., but I could have cheerfully missed Naples. The tour in Barcelona was mostly of the new modern shopping district. If it weren't for the two Gaudi apartment buildings, I would have thought I was on Michigan Avenue Malta, Mallorca and Sardinia were a revelation and the best of all was Valencia and the fantastic Food Market. I am still dreaming of the beautiful displays of fruit! There was lot of nightlife offerings, mostly music, but I preferred to do all the daytime things I could. Don't expect much in the way of TV, but at least they don't have the "shopping" tips you find on other cruises! Yes, there were two nights of choppy water and it took some doing to get used to walking and swaying. Biggest disappointment was Rome. Because it was New Year's Eve, St Peter's Basiica was closing at 1:00 p.m., so we did not have enough time to get through security I was a single on this tour, which means I spent a good deal. If Viking were to offer ocean trips with free single supplement, I would be there in a heartbeat! Read Less

We've had numerous ocean cruises and two river cruises (Viking) and felt that overall the Viking Star was the best of the large boats for its ambiance, dining choices, comfortable balcony cabins and wonderful indoor seating options, and its size (about 930 pages, but we had about 650). We also enjoyed the included beverages, same as available on the river boats. The biggest drawback were the shore tours, which weren't up to the excellence we found on the river boats. Some were good, but others, both included and paid for, were a disappointment because of guides and experiences (where we went and what we were able to see). A number of the "professional" guides were difficult to understand, and several of the tours were badly timed so that key locations on the tour, such as key buildings at the Montserrat Abbey, were closed or closing by the time we arrived. By the time the tours returned to the port city, it was usually siesta, so everything was closed. We were especially disappointed that a rather expensive tour that we signed up for in Rome to see the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel was scheduled to take us to these places knowing that on New Year's Eve they would be closing early by 1 p.m.). We had about two minutes shoehorned through the chapel in enormous crowds. Not what we expected for what we paid. Other tours and destinations, such as Malta, were fantastic. A somewhat pricey classical concert the night we arrived in Malta was worth every penny in the St. John's Co-Cathedral. Port talks were very helpful. Our ship's captain was the most approachable and personable ever, and crew was very accommodating. We capped off our post-cruise stay in Barcelona by visiting Gaudi buildings and the park on our own. Favorite ports were definitely Malta, Valencia and Barcelona. We stayed on our own (rather than signing up for Viking's package). Read Less

All of the food was good and we didn't have any trouble getting reservations at specialty restaurants. Cabins and the entire ship was spotless...brand new! I enjoyed the evening entertainment, saw a couple of shows and listened to the next day's adventures. Tip...we got the Silver Beverage package and never had to ask for a drink, every time we got low there was someone there with a refill. We loved all of the ports except for Naples. The entire staff was available, friendly and knowledgable. They all did a superior job, including the captain. Typically the captain is seen only on the night of introductions, however this captain was visible and engaging. The dining options were wonderful and the two upscale restaurant options were scrumptious. There was a nightly musical show which was not to be missed. The talent and enthusiasm were infectious. Enjoyed previous river cruise so thought we'd give this a try. Overall, we were very pleased. We traveled as two adult (over 60) couples without children. Accommodations were comfortable, ship never seemed crowded, is well designed, and the food was plentiful with many items from which to choose, and was overall of good quality. For the most part, the service was up to the high standards of Viking Cruises. The computer services left much to be desired; too few computers, insufficient bandwidth even when not enroute, and too many internet ports blocked. So if you plan on remotely logging in to a computer at home or work, you may likely encounter a performance problem or be simply prohibited and an unsympathetic ear. I understand that too many people are quick to upload their new photos consuming way too much of the shared and limited internet bandwidth; some cell phones may even do this automatically without the owner realizing it. Polite, perhaps frequent, reminders to the guests might be a viable approach. Remotely accessing a work or home computer (without video) is not as much a load on the network as uploading photos and videos. With the world more connected and dependent on immediately sharing their life experiences, the challenge by Viking to better accommodate these needs of their guests will only increase. The best part of our departure and destination ports was the time we spent on our own. We booked 3 nights in Rome prior to our departure from Civitavecchia Port. We rented an apartment. Sure we had to handle the expense of getting to the apartment and later to the port, but with the help of our gracious host that process was smooth and economical. Did not particularly enjoy some of the (included) port tours; we would have preferred to have a bit more time exploring on our own. For example, the best part of the Naples tour in particular, was when we walked the old neighborhoods on our own. Yes, we would consider another Viking Ocean cruise. Read Less

This was my first Viking Ocean cruise and will not be our last! Viking Ocean is my new favorite cruise line. This cruise was a spur of the moment decision, a deal we just couldn't pass up and we are so glad we did not. We were lured by a Veranda guarantee price and were upgraded to a Deluxe Verandah (cabin sizes are the same, perks are different). Our cabin was great. I really liked the little touches...key card in the slot to power lights and HVAC, nightlight, glass shower doors, shelves in bathroom, HVAC that shut off when balcony door was open, and most of all, heated bathroom floors! The spa was lovely and included for all passengers (treatments extra, of course). So often I went down and had it to myself--heated tiled loungers, pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room. I enjoyed my time there. Treatments were reasonably priced for a cruise and therapists were good. The ship overall was beautiful and had lots of little areas to snuggle in and get comfy with a book (or knitting!), game, or quiet conversation. I was actually surprised at how very UNcrowded the ship seemed overall. Cuisine was excellent across the board. Absolutely loved Manfredi's, didn't actually try any of the other specialty restaurants. We are not big drinkers, but we enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner most nights--that was a nice benefit for us. Main dining room was nicely appointed. Lots of tables for two, but closely spaced so you could easily converse with neighbors. I guess it makes service easier (no waiting for everyone to arrive), but allows for conversation with others. Dining room did get a bit loud at peak times, but I find that usual and to be expected. We stuck with the included shore excursions. They were mostly of the overview type. Varied depending on the guide. Most were very good. Some excellent. One so-so, guide was very nice, but a bit ditsy, disorganized, rambling. Luck of the draw, I'd say. Although they were on big buses for the most part, they didn't FILL the buses so they groups were small, maybe 20-25 people. My husband's one complaint: no casino. I didn't even notice! I can't wait to sail on Viking again! Read Less

We have cruised on a variety of lines including Viking River cruises. The Viking Star ocean cruise was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed the itinerary and all of the amenities provided aboard ship. We never felt as if we were being nickel dimed as happens on other oceans cruises. The entire staff aboard the ship were great. Friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. We also greatly enjoyed the included excursions with optional trips available. We took two of the optional excursions and the remainder of our excursions were included. The offerings were great and allowed us to see something in every port. We highly recommend Viking and their interesting and unique ports and exciting excursions. The speakers that are brought aboard the ship are great. Interesting, knowledgeable and very approachable. show time in the theater is enjoyable - not as big and lavish as the huge cruise ships be charming and enjoyable. The restaurants on board in addition to the main dining room are great - food is delicious. Our entire trip was smooth - relaxing - and enjoyable. I would not hesitate to do another Viking Ocean cruise. Read Less

There was a special price for the cruise because we had sailed with Viking before. We would not do another ocean cruise preferring the river cruises....more scenery along the way and a more intimate atmosphere in general. The food was great but the service was poor. Unlike the river cruises, we had to search for a server and almost beg for a glass of wine. The Asian workers were great. The majority of the Eastern European workers were unfriendly and slow to serve. This was in stark contrast to the Danube cruise where the Eastern European wait staff was phenomenal. (We gave Milos and extra tip.)The pre-cruise extension in Rome and the post-cruise extension in Barcelona were horribly overpriced. The shore excursions were very good and the tour guides (especially Marco at Selenunte and Carmine at Pompeii) were outstanding. Afternoon tea in the winter garden was a nice addition. That staff was very accommodating. The food at the Chef's Table restaurant was disappointing....none of our table liked anything. Manfredi's food was excellent. Read Less
