We went on a cruise 30 years ago and swore we would NEVER cruise again. We heard wonderful things about Viking and decided to give it a try. We are so happy we did. From the time we boarded the ship to the last step off, everyone was wonderful. Our cabin steward, James could not have been more attentive. We dined in all the restaurants and enjoyed each one. We did select the Silver beverage package and received special wine parings with all our meals. It was well worth it. The included excursions are good as a survey of the area. We ended up doing quite a few purchased tours such as making pasta in Florence. We did the Gaudi special access tour in Barcelona. The first of the tour was very nice being able to access his first work before it opened to the public. However, later when touring one of the later works after it opened to the public was not so nice. We only made it to the 2nd of 4 floors and didn't feel safe. The hallways and stairs were very narrow most of the way and were packed wall to wall with people. It did not feel safe at all. We ended up leaving the group and going on our own to explore the city. Keep in mind, crowds do not bother me at all. I am not claustrophobic at all. We have been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, times square in New York, and many other places with high populations in small areas, so for this to bother me tells you it was very bad. I would not recommend this for anyone who has trouble walking or standing for extended periods of time. Back to the good stuff. The cabin was very spacious. We were not lacking for storage at all. Each night, we would receive a brochure of the next days itinerary. Disembarking was very smooth. Buses were waiting for us at each port and the transition was went very quick. Again, we had the most amazing trip and would recommend Viking to everyone. We plan to try a river cruise with Viking next year. Read Less

Excellent cruise, just as expected from Viking. Everytime we cruise, the service, food is consistent! Wonderful New Years Eve party and incredible brunch New Years Day, including an omelette and pasta station. We really enjoy relaxing in the restaurant as well as eating at World Cafe. We love that at World cafe you can order steaks, etc and they are made fresh as you wait. Embarkation was quick, and we were on the ship within 10 minutes enjoying the buffet and drinks. Excursions are always well run and timely. The included excursions definitely give you a nice experience of each port. We usually do an included then either walk around or paid tour as an additional. The little details that Viking provides really helps you feel pampered. No nickel and dime costs. There is always Bottled water waiting for you when you are heading to your excursion, and while we waited for our tender in Monte Carlo, there was pastry, coffee and tea. This is all included, no up charge!!!! We truly enjoy the shows, Viking usually brings local entertainment onboard from the port your in when it’s an overnight stay, this is a nice touch. On this cruise in Barcelona Viking had La Bamba dancers. Disembarkation and transfers were just as smooth and organized as every other aspect. We already booked another cruise for 2021and will be going on Viking again in August 2020! We Can’t wait to enjoy another cruise. After long searching we found our go to cruise line. We feel that with all the added touches included with your cruise, the cost is definitely worth it Read Less

My husband and I have always wanted to experience a Mediterranean cruise. We are so pleased that we booked with Viking. What an amazing trip for a couple 50+ partners. Service was excellent. Employees were very friendly and available from the time of waking to turning in at night. Josephine took special care of our room -twice a day and refilled our fridge (complimentary) daily. The stateroom was very spacious with a full balcony. The bathroom with heated floors and full pressure shower was amazing. We enjoyed the spa area and also participated in a viking bathing ritual for a small fee. Everything was clean and tidy. The food in all locations were superb. Our favorite was Manifreds. I also participated in a cooking class taught by the ship chef. The only complaint is that I ate too much food. (Ok, no complaints) The excursions were well organized and Viking employees were everywhere to assist. We couldn't have asked for anything different. Finally - let's talk people and atmosphere. The ship felt like a home away from home. The atmosphere was relaxing and fun; from tea in the Wintergarden room to the nightly entertainment and meeting others. We met so many wonderful people. If we ever get the opportunity, Viking will be our choice. Read Less

We took the Rome pre-extension and were very pleased with the beautiful hotel. We specifically wanted to see the no-line Coliseum underground tour, and visit the Pantheon. We had always wanted to see the Acropolis in Athens and the added bonus of Italy, Greece, Crete, Sicily and Turkey were wonderful. This Journey to Antiquities was wonderful. The only negative was that due to weather conditions, leaving port was delayed from 5 PM to the next morning. As a result we missed seeing Naples and either Pompeii or Herculaneum. This was a huge disappointment, but we were grateful that our safety was the main concern. So the morning we should have been in Naples, we departed for Sicily and had an entire extra sea day. There were activities on board, such as line dancing classes and other activities. Plenty of things to do. I was pleased with the restaurant choices and afternoon tea in the Wintergarten. There was live music played by duo violinists, and piano, and guitar in other places.. I think perhaps they rotated where the entertainment was during the day. The shops were interesting. We were given a printed newsletter the night before of the following day's activities This was very helpful. I received a menu the night before to give to the restaurant in case there were food choices not compatible for me. All staff were extremely attentive with smiles and great attitudes. They certainly made you feel special. When I went to the spa for the first time, the staff took their enough time to explain everything to me. They were extremely helpful. I didn't feel rushed, nor did any of my questions go unanswered. This being my first ocean cruise I didn't know what to expect with over 900 passengers on board. Unbelievably the ship seemed almost empty, as there was plenty of space, no lines for dining. Most of the time I used an elevator, I was the only person, or perhaps maybe total of 3 at one time. The shore excursions were fine except for the very first one, where the local guide did not hold her 'Viking" sign high enough, and my travel companion and I lost her and missed out on some of the excursion. I loved this cruise and the Viking experience. Based on previous Viking River cruises, I knew the staff would be friendly and attentive. I was not disappointed.. I can't wait to take another Viking cruise. I really enjoyed not having children on board, nor the casinos, bingo, or other activities larger ships have. There was enough entertainment to choose from and we were very pleased with all activities. Our cabin attendant was wonderful. I think the Viking Ocean cruise has spoiled me and I would not want to be on a larger ship with thousands of people and kids and teenagers. I rated the fitness//recreation a 4 because the 3 pools were 5'10" deep, and being only 5'2" you either had to swim, tread water, or hold onto the sides. The heated spa pool was relaxing and the snow grotto a delight. Viking - you are amazing. Am taking one of your river cruises in 8 weeks, but can't wait to go on another ocean voyage with you. We chose this trip to get a bit of winter sun and to visit some on the historic sights we hadn’t seen from other travel. From the start Viking provided excellent service - we were met in the airport and the Viking representative helped sort out lost luggage and get us on our transfer. We did the pre-excursion to Umbria which was fantastic. Small group of people, staying in a castle with excellent meals and fully included excursions - what more could you ask for? Guides were all very good and knowledgeable. We were then transferred to the ship in Rome. We found the ship to be stylish and relaxed; we’ve been on other ships and felt this was the perfect size for our needs. Our cabin (penthouse veranda) was lovely with lots of space and amenities. Onboard dining was very good, with options to choose from for all meals, we never had a bad meal and it was nice having wine included. Excursions - both the included and not included - were also good with very good guides. The ship staff was excellent; we never felt pressure to buy products or do additional things like you do on other cruise lines - it was just excellent service. The entertainment was limited, but honestly for us was fine. I think if it had been a longer cruise the entertainment would have gotten stale. We added the few days in Athens at the end, and again the Viking staff proactively met our needs by getting us a late checkout and individual transportation to the airport. We would definitely choose a Viking again; they are a bit more expensive but the service and included items make it worthwhile. Read Less

This was our first Ocean cruise with any company. We have previously been on 3 river cruises, all with Viking. We were attracted to to the small size of the ship. I would not want to be confined with 5000 passengers on a standard cruise ship. Our boarding was quick and painless, and we quickly found our cabin. The cabin size was actually larger than the hotel room we had in Rome the previous 3 nights. During the 7 day cruise the crew was always friendly and very helpful. Meal choices were a buffet line, a sit down restaurant, or reservation only specialty dining. We had most of our meals in the restaurant, enjoying the leisurely pace and excellent food. One of the best parts about Viking is that most everything is included, without extra fees. We signed up for a couple of the optional shore excursions, and also took 2 of the "included" tours. Both the included and optional tours were excellent. We had some very good local guides, who spoke excellent English. Getting to the excursions was always painless. Viking has the logistics down to a science. Getting on and off the ship was always easy. Overall a great first ocean cruise. We would definitely do it again with Viking Read Less

Loved the cruise, the boat was just the right size not too big or too small. Great amenities from dining to stores to the spa. Rooms were spacious and had balcony. Most of the ports were good, only didn't care for Marseilles, but loved the rest. The excursions were very good, interesting information and good stops. Our porters were awesome, cleaning up the room and turning down for the evening. The restaurant was great, plenty of choices. We did the Chef's table twice and the food was exceptional both times. Wine pairings with the food were great, they were generous with the wine pours too. Loved the no children on the ship! Plenty of places to go, inside and outside. We like to go to the Living Room and Explorer's Lounge. One day we made it for Tea in the Wintergarden, a definite experience not to miss. We had breakfast everyday in the World Cafe which had plenty of choices including make your own eggs any way. All the servers were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely go again. Read Less

Chose Viking for a sophisticated luxurious experience- NOT. CONSTRUCTION (!) POWERWASHING(!) Misleading ports of call- “ Tuscany Florence” “Provence” - Yeah sure as long as you’re paying to get yourself there! When I originally booked St. Tropez was one of the ports which was abruptly switched to Sete, France. Not an exciting destination to say the least. Entertainment- AMATUER hour. They’ll tell you there’s a jazz club but no jazz to be played. Food- average at best. I lobster tail on lobster night was over cooked mush. Dont fall for the “elegant” sounding videos- check photos I included- there’s part of what you’ll get. (Photo n video could not be posted in this site w phone) After I posted a review on ConsumerAffairs.com I was contacted by Viking’s customer relations department. All they gave me was attitude, and “I’m sorry you feel that way” like I was the one with the problem. Horrendous. Read Less

This cruise was to celebrate a special anniversary, our 50th and we wanted a very special cruise to a place we had never been. The 7 Night Iconic Western Mediterranean cruise did not disappoint. We felt pampered in every way. The ship is beautiful. The food was delicious and all of the Star's employees were always eager to please the passengers in every way. The entertainment on board was wonderful. The bathroom in the stateroom exceeded my expectation. It put a smile on my face every time I want in it and the heated floor was such a treat. All of the toiletries were high quality. I didn't have to use any that I brought, which I always do just to make sure. An especially nice perk is that every deck has three washer and dryers for guests to use free of charge, including detergent and an iron and ironing board. I was able to come on board with clean cloths and leave with clean cloths. I would highly recommend a Viking cruise. You will not be disappointed. Read Less

I choose the Mediterranean Ocean cruise to take my mother to the Vatican and Europe for the first time. We enjoyed the wine at lunch and dinber and the restaurant and in room dining options on the Viking Star. The King size bed cabins were modern and comfortable as well as the bathroom which had a fairly large shower. Even the public bathrooms were always spotless with calming cheerful bird sounds. Our steward room service was wonderful, the bartenders were very friendly and most all the staff fantastic. We also enjoyed the excursions and itinerary for the the ports in Italy, France and Spain. Sete was lovely, Monaco was fun and we needed more time in Barcelona. We even had time to watch one movie under the stars and the lounge band for dancing was so much fun. I would definately choose Viking again someday to try a river cruise next. Read Less

This was a 25th wedding anniversary cruise. The boat was amazing. Room was a wonderful size. We had a deluxe veranda. The food was 5 star quality and was absolutely delicious. No need to eat off the boat. The meals served were from the region we were visiting - and did I mention they were outstanding! The excursions were good. I would choose differently on some of them now that I have been the the Iconic Mediterranean cruise. We added a pre-excursion in Rome and so glad we did. The concierge at our beautiful hotel arranged a night bus tour and fabulous meal at a restaurant in Rome. One of our highlights. The staff on the boat were extremely kind and funny. Always smiling and willing to help in any way. The only port we stayed on the boat was Montpelier. I wish we could have skipped that stop and had two days in Barcelona. Our flight on the way home was the only bad experience but not the fault of Viking. Took us 28 hours to get from Barcelona to Pittsburgh. Hope we can travel with Viking again. Loved every minute. The optional excursions were exceptionally good! We enjoyed the Explorers Lounge each late afternoon. Manfredi’s was our favorite restaurant. We only tried The Chef’s Table one night and didn’t enjoy it as much. The pina colada’s by the pool are the best I’ve ever tasted! Kudos to each and every staff member! They had our names and likes down almost immediately! Our cabin was a deluxe veranda and we were very pleased with it. The balcony was roomy. The nightclub had good entertainment. We enjoyed all our previous Viking river cruises and were eager to have a Viking ocean cruise experience. We opted for the pre-cruise extension in Rome and soaked up the art and history of the Eternal City. Our hotel was a five-star property on the Via Veneto directly across the street from the US embassy. A Viking representative was on hand to help with reservations, etc. Our cabin on Viking Star was spacious and comfortable--an upgrade from the river cabins. Our steward (Cedric) was helpful and courteous. By the third day he anticipated our needs and remembered our preferences. There are several dining venues aboard the Star, and the cuisine is excellent. The Silver Spirits package is a good value. We were impressed with the variety and quality of on-board entertainment. It ranged from pop to classical. Land excursions were offered daily--some were included and some at extra cost--and afforded the opportunity to see the countryside. We visited Florence and Pisa in Italy, Monaco, St. Tropez, Nice, Aix-en-Provence, and Barcelona. All land travel was aboard modern Mercedes coaches. The local guides were knowledgeable and friendly. An important feature of Viking ocean ships is the size of the vessels--there are only 900 guests compared to 3000+ on the mega ships. A better experience all around. In Summary, we were delighted with our Viking Star experience and are already discussing our next cruise. Read Less

It was a great cruise, Florence was the best. Some of the included tours were just ok. We tried to do a morning tour every day and we were able to get back to the ship on most days for lunch and had a relaxing time at the pool. The decor of the ship was unbelievable. It was one of the nicest ships that I have ever been on. The food was very, very good. We ate at the World Cafe almost every night. It was nice to sample all of the different food that was prepared. Because it was a small ship, getting on and off the ship was very easy. The entertainment was very good and enjoyable. We chose this cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The cruise was described as Rome to Barcelona. We opted to stay 2 addt’l days at the end in Barcelona. However, had we known we wouldn’t see ANY of Rome, we would have added on 2 days at the beginning as well. The ships departure port is 45min. from Rome. So there was no time to see the points of interest on our list. We also felt thatvsome if the excursion descriptions were a bit misleading. One in particular in St Tropez was called Culbary Walk. The description stated we would see food demonstrations and taste food from local chefs. We did taste crepes. But we did not see them being made nor was there any instruction on how to eat them or what to put on them. Some people in our group did not even know how to fold them. This was very disappointing. We also felt that if we were held to the dress code standard in the restraints then everyone should be. We witnessed a family of 5 dressed VERY casually in jeans and old t-shirts get seated. It was even posted at the check-in. We mentioned it to the Maitre ‘D and were told that some people didn’t know so we made an exception. Read Less

The food was amazing! Our only criticism is that we were never able to get into Manfriedi’s restaurant which we would love to have gone. The staff/crew were amazingly accommodating, personable and attentive!!!! We wanted for nothing! We found all entering and leaving the ship and excursions to be well organized and managed. My absolute favorite time was the excursion to the winery Torre A Cenaia!!! The staff there made us all feel like home and were great!!! The Pitti Sangiovese was the best I’ve had and only wished I could get it in the USA. Please let the winery know they are the best and Viking made a great choice for an excursion! We will be taking more Viking cruises, both ocean and European river cruises. Next will be the Alaska cruise with Viking! Thank you for an amazing time!!! Read Less

We had been looking for a cruise that either began or ended in Barcelona and the fact that this cruise had a unique itinerary that included Tunis & Algiers drew us to select it. We'd also traveled on a Viking River Cruise and enjoyed it very much. However, the cruise was disappointing. Tunis was canceled two weeks before departure due to political unrest and Naples was substituted but bad weather prevented the ship from the harbor. Algiers was canceled enroute due to weather and Mallorca was substituted but the ship arrived so late that none of the optional excursions were available and we virtually only had 4 hours in that port. We fully understand that Viking has no control of the weather and the ship's safety is paramount, but never the less it was a disappointment. Our Deluxe Veranda cabin experience was less than satisfactory. We were unable to unpack our suitcases because there were only 3 drawers that were 3 inches deep and 18 hangars in the closet for clothing for two adults. Seriously! Upon request, more wire hangars were brought to us. (Our river cruise cabin had more storage.) I am short and putting clothes above the closet was not a solution. We ended up keeping our suitcases on top of the chairs. Additionally, the cabin was very plain, even for Danish style. The staff were hospitable and kind. The restaurant selections were plentiful. The food was good and varied, but nothing was exceptional; even in Manfredi's. We chose not to eat at the Chef's Table because the offerings were too strange. (We are not foodie's.) The ship's interiors were lovely, particularly the Wintergarten. Read Less

We had the most wonderful experience aboard the Eastern Mediterranean cruise on the Sun about 2yrs ago. Things changed a lot in 2 years or from the East to Western Mediterranean. Almost a totally different company experience, the sad part we introduced 2 frequent travelers with a lot of cruise ship experiences and they were really disappointed probably want return on a Viking tour. First day/night Captain asked everyone to wash hands. Pool, hot spas, sauna and other amenities closed for 3 days. No entertainment until the 5th day, by that I mean the singers, dancers and mini broadway like productions. Second day Captain again appeals to passengers to wash hands exercise sanitary precautions. Third day Captain ceased self serve in the cafeteria hoping to reduce spread and infection. Think it would have been wiser to stay in port and cancel the cruise. Just in our group of 6 passengers 3 became ill missing 2 full days, that's 50% of the group and 25% of the trip. How many really were affected??? Captain encouraged anyone who felt nausea or other symptoms to remain in their rooms, medical aides would come to them. Everyone I spoke with during and people we met on the cruise and have remained friends via social media felt that the sickness was aboard and we came to it. Why were the entertainers unavailable??Why were the pools, hot tubs, and other amenities closed?? Only sickness answers those questions. Read Less

I have cruised on viking river and ocean cruises 7 times. I have extremely high expectations. The cruise itinerary was changed eliminating Tunisia and Algeria. We missed another stop because of bad weather. The tour to the mountain town of Erice should have been cancelled because of the dense fog which prevent any seeing and was dangerous. No one finished the tour. Those are the negatives. Here are the positives. The ship, the staff, the food, our room, and the ambiance were wonderful. Our room was large with a great bath and more storage space than we used. We loved Mallorca, Naples, and Valencia. I thought the included tours were as good or better than the optional. We ate in the Chef’s Table twice. Delicious. Our friends really enjoyed Madsen. Frankly the food is better than any other ships. The youngest person on the cruise was 22 and I believe the oldest was in her nineties. They both seemed to have a great time. My sister and I initially picked this Viking cruise because of the pricing, inclusions, and the organization's reputation. Because my flight to JFK was delayed, it looked like I was going to miss my flight to Rome. When I finally arrived to JFK, someone from Viking had already called and left a message that she booked me on another flight leaving within a two hours. I apologize for not knowing her name, but it was crazy and hectic, but I ran and made it just in time to make my flight. My luggage did not make it, but it did arrive the following day. The Viking represetative helped make arrangments for Delta to ensure I got my suitcase. It was delivered to me before we left Rome. Our Penthouse Veranda was the the best in which I have ever stayed. It was spacious, efficient, and extremely comfortable. Our cabin attendants were excellent. Room service was punctual, too! The free Wifi and the television selections were good, as well. We loved the free dining choices, no photos being sold, no art auctions, nor expensive bingo games! The evening entertainment and lectures, were lackluster; so we chose to go to our rooms to relax and watch TV. Unfortunately, we were disappointed that we could not go to Sardinia (high waves), Tunisia, or Algiers (state department restrictions). However, I loved Naples because I was able to see Pompeii and Palma De Mallorca was nice, too. We took an excursion to Erice, but it was too foggy to enjoy. We climbed to the top on slippery cobblestones to see just fog at the top. The food was fantastic and I was able to stay within my dieting restrictions. The included sodas and wine were apprecitated. All of the restaurants were great and the service impeccable! I am looking forward to finding another Viking cruise to take! Read Less

We have travelled on Viking before, on a River Cruise and wanted to try the Ocean Cruise to compare. We found most things to be the same however unlike the River Cruise our gratuities were not included. This does add a bit to the over all expense at the end of the cruise. We did find that the first two days at our Pre-Cruise Hotel a bit disappointing considering the price we had to pay per person. The rooms were very dated and the furniture was very worn which kind of made one not want to spend much time in the room. As well we did not find the bar are area very inviting. One last point that we disliked was that we had to have out luggage out or our room extremely early in the morning and that we had to vacate the room before 10:00am. Leaving the room so early requiring us to sit in the small lobby until 1:00pm waiting for the bus. Not a good experience for anyone. And in particular for my wife who is suffering from Parkinson's Disease. She was truly uncomfortable to say the least. Read Less

I picked Viking because I have looked at the brochures for years, but never planned what to do. I originally thought river boat cruise. Then the ocean cruise was the journey I wanted to the Southern Mediterranean. This was my first cruise as a widow of two years. The Viking Star was absolutely beautiful and the ambiance everywhere on the ship was amazing. The crew was so attentive everywhere on the ship. Dining was available for whatever you wanted. The food at each restaurant was tops. My stateroom with veranda was so comfortable and had everything I needed. The choices of shore excursions at each port were extensive. Anything you wanted to see was available. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and personable. I met some really nice travelers, and made friends with two ladies that were so fun and easy going. Everybody on this ship was friendly. The amenities were top notch. The heated bathroom floors awesome. The ship was so clean always. The spa was beautiful and serene. The Wintergarden was so wonderful at afternoon teas. So many entertainment choices. Viking made all the necessary flight reservations and this included the transfers to and from the ship at embarkation and disembarkation. Made it so easy for me. Especially traveling alone. They were at the airport upon arrival with signs all along the way directing us. No children were on the cruise and most passengers were 55 and older. I will definitely go on the cruise line again! The daily excursions gave a great sample of many spectacular places. They were educational and worthwhile. The Amalfi Coach tour had us hanging on to our seats with big oohs and ahhhs as we saw the most magnificent scenery. The ship schedule changed due to the weather and security/safety. Viking did their best to make every day special. The magic show one night was fun! The food throughout the cruise was delicious, giving you the option of how much and how frequently you dine. Cookies and Milk delivered as room service were a cozy treat. Enjoyed the casual help yourself dinning for breakfast. Fresh crab legs for dinner. The specialty restaurants on board were favorites for dinner. The cabin had a balcony that let the beautiful air in and the sound of the sea. Slept great. I went with a friend and we were able to turn the bed into singles. Can't wait to share the experience with my husband on a cruise this fall! Read Less

We took the Viking Ocean Cruises “Iconic Western Mediterranean Barcelona to Rome” trip on their Viking Star ship from December 14-21, 2017. We have taken many river cruises with Viking and other companies and decided to try an ocean cruise this time. The Viking Star is new and clean with many amenities, entertainment, good food and excellent cabin and restaurant staff. That said, this cruise had problems. First off, we could not select a specific cabin. We could not even select the side of the ship we wanted. Cabins were assigned at their California headquarters just prior to departure. I wanted the left (port) side which had a better view facing land since we were traveling east. No way. Our tickets were GTY veranda– meaning we were ‘guaranteed’ a cabin with a veranda but no level indicated. Of course we could always pay more for an upgrade once on board! We got cabin 5065 on the starboard (right) side with a view of nothing but water. Walk to the other side of the ship if you want to see anything. Given global terrorism, every time we returned to ship we had to pass through an airport-like security scanner. We were late departing Barcelona’s commercial port because other ships had priority. There was a strong wind and choppy seas but certainly nothing like the 2000 disaster film The Perfect Storm starring George Clooney about a vessel lost at sea. Along the way our overly-cautious Captain Lokling decided he could not dock Viking Star at Marseille’s natural harbour and yacht marina. Some land excursions leaving from Marseille were cancelled. He decided instead to dock further east at Toulon, home port of the French Navy Mediterranean fleet. We sailed into the harbor at Toulon in calm water under sunny skies. Then we sailed out again. Two hours later our captain finally made an announcement to passengers that he “did not like the look of it”. All remaining land excursions were now cancelled including one of the advertised “5 guided tours”. We anchored out at sea overnight. Cruise Director Jenna had nothing for us to do. Some drank; some slept; some read. Next morning we entered St. Tropez harbor and anchored offshore. Small orange tender boats were launched from Viking Star to transport us from ship to shore for our land tour. On returning, the tender boat I was in could not manage to align itself with the open entryway into the ship. Many attempts were made. The revving engines churned the sea into white froth. Then we smashed into the side of the ship breaking a front side window on the tender. Two more tries and we were finally hauled alongside by rope. Then, later that afternoon, for two hours none of the toilets on the ship would flush. We actually did dock at Monte Carlo. Those on port side of Viking Star saw the spectacular cityscape rising up the hills. Those of us on starboard saw only water. In the evening we were two hours late departing Monte Carlo – blame that pesky wind again. Our next stop was the commercial port of Livorno which is a 30-minute drive to Pisa and a 90-minute drive to Florence for those taking tours. The Captain’s Farewell Reception was held at 5:15 PM before some of the tours had returned to ship. Our last port was Civitavecchia where we disembarked for the bus drive to a hotel or airport in Rome. But before doing so, passenger’s credit cards were charged $105 US per person gratuity. No indication if this amount goes to cabin and restaurant staff or to ship’s officers as well. No indication either of any compensation to passengers for cancelled excursions and Marseille/Toulon bypass. Read Less

We chose Viking due to high ratings on major sites. However, we had quite a surprise. Just completed 15-day Mediterranean cruise on Viking Star, Rome/Rome, Dec. 21 – Jan. 4. This was our first Viking experience, and while the ship was attractive and comfortable, one very troubling issue arose. Our cabin 6087 was a category Penthouse Veranda, spacious, well laid out, and expensive. Early into our first week, we heard music and dialogue coming through the speaker on our wall-mounted TV monitor, from 9:00pm onwards every evening. Specifically, we could sing along with whatever music was playing in the next cabin, or we could listen to a movie or TV episode and clearly hear the dialogue. We reported this to Guest Services, and while their attention and response was hardly one of concern for guest comfort, we were assured their IT department would investigate. With no change, our second visit revealed that Guest Services forgot to pass on our complaint. We were subsequently advised that IT visited the next cabin, 6089, and confirmed the volume level was at the correct cap. Nothing changed however, and their TV continued to send sound through our speaker. The third visit to Guest Services was so dissatisfying that we could hardly imagine a poorer response to a serious guest complaint. Guest Services indicated there was nothing more they could do; mention was made of lack of insulation, Viking being aware of this sound transference problem and ours was not an isolated incidence. And, as an indication of good faith, we were offered ear plugs. Before our journey completed, we had to listen to the movie Dunkirk in its entirety. War movies are not for everyone, and that evening’s entertainment was a particular trial. This issue was so ruinous of our experience, that we will not consider another Viking cruise. Guest Services staff were aloof, indifferent, unprofessional and incompetent. A word of warning to those who are considering a Viking ocean cruise. You too could spend $15,000 and be offered ear plugs. Read Less
