Viking exceeded every expectation. The food was exceptional at every meal. We appreciated the quality beer and wine pairings included with meals and the attention to detail regarding food selection and quality. We were pleasantly surprised at the specialty restaurants, thinking they couldn't possibly exceed the quality of regular dining but they did. We tried wine pairings we would never have tried otherwise & they were amazing. The ship was spotless & incredibly comfortable and hospitable. Our cabin was comfortable with modern amenities. Service in every aspect of the cruise was outstanding. We were probably one of the youngest couples on the ship by probably 5 to 10 years but we felt like we fit in just fine. Excursions were well planned & organized - very good value. The travel service Viking provided for air reservations was perfect & convenient. We've been on many cruises with other cruise lines but Viking is by far the best. We have already booked a cruise to Australia & New Zealand and can't wait for the trip! Read Less

Our first ocean cruise - aboard Viking Star, the newest of the Viking fleet, and its first ocean ship. With only 900 passengers, it is one of the smallest, and certainly the most enjoyable holiday. Arriving in Rome, we were met by several Viking personnel who welcomed us warmly and showed us through to baggage claim, where once we identified our luggage it was quickly whisked away to be transported separately by van to the ship. We were escorted to our comfortable coach and with little delay to the ship. The checking through the dock took a short time, with photographs being taken for identification on board, then onto the ship, which looked superb! Within minutes we were on the 5th level to be met by our steward for the trip, Fasri, who already knew our name and showed us around our room and facilities (which were excellent!) Water, soft drinks, snacks, coffee machine, hairdryer, mini binoculars, cashmere blanket, smart TV, and the crisp bedding with 2 types of pillows. We were also met by a bottle of champagne and a birthday cake for me :) Having settled in, we had a brief wander around the ship ( it takes a little time to orientate yourself especially if this is the first ocean cruise (as it was for us) though being a smaller more intimate ship, does not mean that you "fall over" anyone! There are several dining options, from a pool grill, to the World Cafe, to the Italian themed Manfredi's, the Chef's Table, the main restaurant, and the Kitchen table. You can dine as a couple, or with new acquaintances, the choice is yours. For relaxing - quiet chats or reading, the Explorers lounge had my vote, with the wonderful Scandinavian snacks available from Mamsen's. Tea, coffee, soft drinks etc are available 24 hours a day. After a wonderful meal, with a lovely dessert presented with Happy Birthday both on the plate and being sung by waiting staff, we wandered again before retiring, to find turn down completed and the room fresh and tidy. A wonderful hot shower before retiring, (did I tell you about the underfloor heating in the bathroom?!! excellent!!) the bedding crisp and white was most inviting. The following morning of breakfast in the World cafe, saw us set up for the day (my husband a full English, myself a croissant ) we set off for our first trip. We met in the Theatre ( 2 cinemas and the theatre on board) were taken to our coaches and off to Pompeii. The first of 5 trips we undertook, they were all excellent, especially the final one, a visit to the Caves of Drach, which was absolutely breathtaking, before we left for Valencia and on to Barcelona to end our cruise. The food was absolutely superb throughout the cruise, the staff both knowledgable and very accommodating of any requests/preferences you may have. A visit to the Wintergarden for afternoon tea is a must also! The Spa was fantastic! Spacious changing rooms, with sauna and plunge pool, then through to the Thermal pool, jacuzzi, steam room and Snow Grotto (yes it actually snows!!!!) absolutely wonderful!! Visited on several days for additional R & R!!! There was only one minor problem which was the continuing IT problems with the smart tv. Overall, there was no doubting the attention to detail, the determination that all would have not just a cruise, but an enriching experience throughout the ship and onshore. We would recommend Viking to anyone wishing a more personal, top class service. You will undoubtedly find it aboard the Viking Star! There is so much more than mentioned here, but don't take my word for it, but the reviews tell it all! Read Less

This was our first ocean cruise and we couldn't have picked a more beautiful ship! Not a speck of dust, a fingerprint, a scuff mark, nor any dirty spot either inside or out! Room was very comfortable and we had a balcony as do all the staterooms on this ship. "Classy" was the term used by many travelers. The seasoned travelers all agreed that this was the best ship on which they had ever traveled. Food was amazing and I know I gained 6-7 pounds! The quality of the food was the best and everything was fresh. One of the Maitre d's told me that they never hold anything longer than three hours. Be sure to have the made-from-scratch sticky buns and cinnamon doughnuts made on alternate days! YUM! On board entertainment was wonderful: string quartet, opera, piano, singers in night club, etc. No climbing walls, no ice skating rink, no gambling, no water slides, etc. so this might not be the best choice for children. My biggest disappointment was not in the ship at all but the near lack of free time in ports with only 20-30 minutes at the destinations. Most of the tour guides were very good except for the one we had in Barcelona. (Do not take the panoramic tour of Barcelona!) Naples is a port that could be skipped as far as many were concerned as it was very shabby and buildings were falling apart with rubble and trash in the streets. Even the best part of town ("where movie stars and football players live") was very shabby. Better to have been shuttled over to Capri. One of the most memorable stops was in Valencia, Spain, where we were taken to the Market on our tour. This place must have been as big as a football field inside and had the biggest, most beautiful, blemish-free fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, etc. If I lived anywhere in Spain, it would have to be near this market. Fabulous! While we are not seasoned ocean travelers, the "rough" seas we had were enough for us to decide to stick to river cruising. Other travelers thought it was nothing and even the captain told us in a private conversation that it was next to nothing and that the ship could handle ten times that. We will leave it to others to enjoy ocean cruising. Read Less

First of all, I must admit upfront, we are not frequent cruisers. The cruises we have taken tend to be casual, smaller vessels, with an educational enrichment focus. We booked this cruise because of the wonderful reputation Viking has for their River Cruises and because of the description of the Viking Star. It turned out to be a very successful trip for us...so much so that we booked a second cruise while aboard for later in 2016. We had Viking take care of our air and it worked out perfectly. It is never fun to travel for 10+ hours from LA to Europe but the times were well thought out and the transfers in Amsterdam (going) and Paris (coming) went perfectly. We were met at the airport with no confusion. In fact the number of Viking Representatives handling the arriving passengers was impressive. The process for signing in for the cruise was also extremely efficient. No long lines...waiting while jet-lagged. Quick and well-done. Our cabin was a simple veranda on deck 3 and we were very happy with it. It was roomier than we expected. Our steward, Willy, and his partner, Fernando could not have been more attentive. We enjoyed our veranda even if the weather was a bit chilly and being able to open the drapes and see the sea going by was great! We ate at all the different restaurants except for the ones where you had to pay extra. We enjoyed all of them. My husband, who LOVES salmon, especially gravlox, was a happy camper! We enjoyed mussels, shrimp, and other seafoods. People with restricted diets would have no trouble with the diversity of offerings. We participated in the complimentary excursion tours at each port and found them very comprehensive and well-done. The guides were knowledgeable and went out of their way to accommodate any special requests. We did NOT feel like cattle. Our portable Vox boxes worked just fine and allowed us to move about more freely as we walked. We appreciated the ease with which we returned to the ship. We have been on ships where we were practically stripped searched for prohibited items. Since you are permitted to bring bottles of wine or spirits aboard with you, it went like clockwork! The activities aboard ship were high class. Music ranging from jazz to classical was special. We especially enjoyed the evening of Operatic Arias and the classical guitar. We attended the afternoon tea service when we were on board. We also delighted in the spa activity of trying out the Nordic Bathing ritual. For a very modest fee we experimented with the sauna and the "snow room" and ended with a foot massage! Overall, we truly felt that everyone aboard ship's priority was to treat us like we were valued guests. It was clear that they wanted us to enjoy ourselves. The entire atmosphere is calm, welcoming, relaxing. There are many comfortable areas to pull up with a book, a cup of coffee, your laptop and just watch the world go by. Even the main deck has a wonderful feel without having a "counter" where you have to line up for services. We felt the ship more than gave us value for our investment. It was nice to not feel nickled and dimed to death. I must admit that the shopping aboard ship was beyond my price-range but we had many opportunities to pick up items ashore. I must admit that the ship was not filled to capacity which might have contributed to the ease of debarking, getting an elevator, finding a table in the restaurant. But we had a marvelous time and can't wait to return to the Viking Star! Read Less

The Viking Ocean Star was the nicest ship I have been on and I have been on many. There were a few glitches but overall it was an outstanding trip. Staff excellent, food and service superb. Of the few issues we had one outstanding one was we did not have a 'sea' day and could fully utilize this wonderful ship. Other issues dealt with the complimentary excursions, for some odd reason they were all timed at the same time and once we arrived anywhere, everyone else was there too. Very crowded and long lines. Toward the end of the cruise it seemed they fixed the situation and divided up the departure times better. Another issue besides losing our dinner reservation for one of the specialty restaurants was changing the departure time that we the 'guest' chose. Often there was a reason a time was selected and it became incovenient when those times were changed without notice. We embarked from Italy and there seemed to be little to no security measures in place as we boarded the ship. And on returns from excursions the staff member checking our 'cards' rarely looked at either us or the screen they were supposed to check. Read Less

Why? I can reach them when I call with a question. They take care of the details. I have been on five Viking River cruises in the past. I was ready to try their new fleet of ships with only 900+ passengers. I been on other cruise lines with around 2800 passengers. Viking ships are new with Dutch interior design. Lots of places outside your room to sit and view the Mediterranean or read a book. Crew well trained. Food very good. Restaurant seating for dinner was not congested and dining rooms were more intimate. Not a huge open area like the bigger ships. You easily had tables of two or eight. Their Viking sauna was incredible. We used the indoor therapy pool almost every day after touring before dinner. We did not use outdoor pools because of the time of year. The tourist crowds were not present and thus walking tours were not crowded, the highways were not crowded and the weather was sunny and 60's. Tours were 4 or more hours. The guided tours were on clean comfortable buses. Having never been to these 6 cities we took all but two tours that were included in the price. Taormina, Sicily on your own and Caves of Drach on Mallorca Spain were the two tours we paid extra to take because we wanted more than a city tour. These two tours were worth the money and time. I love Viking Tours because they issue ear plugs so you don't have to be on top of tour guide to hear what is being said. The guides were good and the length of the tour was just right for us. We are in our 70s. On each tour we got a flavor of the current city and the ancient city. Did we like this tour???? So much so we booked a tour of Baltic in May 2016. Read Less

we had done the Rhine River cruise and loved it. The price was right and we jumped on the ocean cruise There is no comparison when it comes to Viking anything. The ship staff, food, tours and room were top shelf. We are looking to book another cruise as I type this We will be looking at another December cruise. The Christmas markets are just wonderful. If you do go on this cruise spend the extra money on Rome/Vatican and in Florence. they are just wonderful We are not "cruise people". Please understand that whatever room you have on this ship is just great. What is truly feel that Viking will do anything for you. The fact that you are not crowded like lemmings. But anything and everything is done at a moments notice. The officers and staff honestly are just nice and helpful. While yes it is their respective jobs. They appear to be sincere in doing whatever they can to help you Read Less
