Wanted to try a more inclusive cruise line with a smaller ship and higher quality over the main cruise lines. Viking really delivered. We were having lunch approximately 5 minutes of arriving at the cruise terminal. Ship is beautiful, food was fantastic no crowds. I enjoyed every second. Loved the high quality Viking offers. The first night in the restaurant was one of the best meals in recient memory. The buffet for dinner was also fantastic. Lots of choices, king crab legs etc. they also set up a cooking station outside grilling fish and various meats. They also have great cappuccino machines. The room is very well designed with lots of room and first run movies My only complaint and hopefully it’s not a trend to start charging extra is they are charging $10 for fitness classes that used to be included. Getting off the last morning was so nice. We hate the other cruise lines that have thousands of rude passengers pushing and shoving all trying to leave at once. They wanted you out of your room by 8 am and off the ship at your leasure by 9:45. Viking might charge more than the bigger cruise lines but I think it’s more than worth it. Read Less

Although we had been to the start and stop sites before several times, the intermediate stops in the Adriatic were new to us and quite interesting. The Orion is a lovely ship...just a few weeks old at our sailing so everything was impeccable. The service was probably the best ever experienced on a cruise, which was surprising given the newness of the vessel and crew. We found the casual dining to be more appealing than the main dining room, given the breadth of choices and the ability to sample many different tastes. Also, we made friends with servers there and made sure to it in their areas whenever possible. The entertainment was generally middling, typical cruise ship fare...although the professor who provided lectures on various topics was quite interesting and the planetarium was very novel and entertaining. Our younger son and his wife joined us for the second week from Venice to Athens and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. The gym/spa area was the best we'd ever seen...loved the ice room and the steam rooms being so adjacent. And the common areas/lounges were quite comfortable, especially the Explorers' Lounge that was just a few steps from our cabin. The best indicator of our pleasure with the Orion is that we are booked for another sailing on it in the Orient in September of 2019...and are planning as well for a 2020 Viking combination river and ocean cruise in Scandinavia. Viking is, in our opinion, simply the best cruise line afloat. Read Less

We chose Viking because we have been on other cruise lines and didn’t like how crowded they were. The cruise itself was spectacular. The staff was attentive and friendly. The ship was clean and comfortable; not overcrowded. The food in the main restaurant was superb. By far the best restaurant on the ship is the main restaurant. We ate at the speciality restaurants as well but preferred the main restaurant. I enjoyed the fact that you could go to dinner whenever you wanted. There were no assigned tables, times or waitstaff. The only complaint I would have with Viking is their customer service reps that you deal with before the cruise. I found them to be rude and unhelpful once the cruise was booked. They were particularly rude when I was attempting to book excursions. I did not do any of the included excursions and had some difficulty getting the excursions I wanted. Instead of telling me to be patient because additional spots open up on excursions that are popular I was told I should have booked a more expensive room (I chose the deluxe veranda because I don’t spend much time in the room but didn’t want the base room either). I felt these people were overly rude which was completely unnecessary and made me dread going on the trip. Read Less

We added excursions at most of the ports and were not disappointed. The guides were professional. We felt safe at all times. On the ship, the staff always remembered us and greeted us with smiles, jokes, and friendly conversation. Our cabin was always impeccably clean with specific soda and snacks tweaked to our specifications. Our room service order was magnificent and delicious. The spa was amazing from the plunge pool to the jacuzzi pool to the Nordic steam and snow room. We spent most late afternoons at one of the outdoor pools with cocktails after lunch at the pool bar. We can’t wait to book another cruise. We were depressed for a week after returning home. We were too spoiled. Read Less

We’ve always wanted to go on a cruise to Italy and this was the best one we could find for the dates we wanted. The cruise was excellent and the service was exceptional. The ship and cabins were exceptionally clean but this is a new ship for Viking. Our only complaint about the cruise is that some of the included excursions were bus tours of the cities which gave us few opportunities for taking photos. The tour guide were very knowledgeable about the places they showed us but were difficult to understand on the bus tours. If you want to spend time in Rome, I suggest you get there a day or two earlier or purchase the pre cruise package. Dining on the ship was excellent with some of the best European food we’ve had. With the buffet style World Cafè for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you should never go hungry. And did I mention that the food is awesome? This was our second time on a Viking tour (our first was a river cruise) and there is no doubt in my mind, there will be more. Read Less

We traveled with our good friends from Wyoming and decided to try an ocean cruise following a great river cruise we had to France about 2 years prior to this trip. We were overall very happy with the entire cruise with very few exceptions. The ship was new so everything was wonderful from the cabins to the fitness area. We especially enjoyed the explorers lounge and the restaurants available each evening to enjoy wine and dinner with our friends. We were happy to dress up for the dinner each evening which added a special touch to the experience. In addition to the dining, we enjoyed the tours. We were especially happy that Viking provided plenty of education and information prior to touring each city on the cruise. We left feeling we knew so much more about the country and people. Our friends were a little disappointed with the reservation system for purchasing tours due to the fact there was limitation on numbers which did not allow us to choose the same tours for all of us on certain stops. They also were frustrated that exceptions were not made to accommodate adjustment to our tour schedules in order to allow us to be together even though we tried to call ahead of time within the guide lines and timelines. The consumer service department did help us at the last minute to grab a couple of spots on one of our tours and that was very helpful. We understand the priorities based on type of cabin, but the most popular options might be better to add additional seats rather than limit them based on a fixed number. Despite this issue we felt all the tour guides were very good and well prepared to deliver a quality tour experience. The buses and destinations for the most part were great and gave us a nice picture of the culture and people living in Italy. The entertainment was very good, however might have been geared more for an older group as we are all in our late 50s and early 60s and would like to see a bit more variety. Overall, however, we enjoyed most of the shows especially the opera night. We were very impressed with the detail to service throughout the entire boat. We had no bad service during the cruise and enjoyed being pampered during our stay. We plan use Viking every other year to allow us to tour more parts of the world. We feel that the cost is the only thing keeping us from traveling with you every year. We would have probably booked another trip, but we did not understand the savings of booking while on the boat until late in the process. We did not have time to get with your people and discuss due to the busy schedule at the end of the trip. Hats off to all the hard working people on the Viking ship!! we had a great time. Read Less

Rome was number one on my bucket list, and that wasn’t the only place in Italy I wanted to see. Many of my friends had been on various Viking Cruises including the first round the World on the Viking Sun. Heard nothing but excellent on all their trips. Everything went so smoothly for a first timer. Was concerned about airlines but things went ok going to Italy. Stuck in Venice airport coming back to USA, but that was weather. Now the ship was wonderful and I normally get sea sick. Didn’t. So smooth. Cabin was like a small apartment. Plenty of room, drawers, closets....PV1 cabin. All food was good, but I really enjoyed the World Cafe. So many choices and I did not get anything that was not good. There is The Restaurant ( problems sometimes) and others that you need to make the reservations for that were excellent. All ports were great, some better than others. We didn’t have any problems with excursions, and loved Sicily and Croatia (Krka Falls). Read Less

We began our trip with the extension in Tuscany, which was well worth both the time and money. Our Viking guide made it a very interesting and seamless time. The ship was very new, and the only problem was that the coffeemaker in our cabin was not working. No problem, as we loved having an American in the Living Room! The main dining room was excellent both for breakfast and for dinner. There is plenty of room in the public areas, so you never felt crowded. It is a very serene environment, just what we like after sightseeing. All of the staff was most eager to please, and provided service without intruding. We particularly enjoyed our excursions to Taormina, Bari and Venice. It was very hot, but they always had cold washcloths for us when we returned to the ship. This was our first Viking Ocean cruise after having taken two Viking River cruises. We enjoyed both experiences. Read Less

A friend of mine recommended Viking as a way to visit Italy. I'm so sorry this is the path we chose. Onboard- jr. Penthouse is a fantastic room and clean. Other than that, I am NOT impressed and more than dissatisfied with the service, & ship amenities. The pool is EXTREMELY small, no casino, no evening entertainment (other than various musicians in areas of the ship), restaurant and buffet hours are limited & CLOSE EARLIER THAN HOURS LISTED. The guest services personnel ARE not informed of the various tours available & "waitlist " you if a tour is full. Waitlist means nothing other than you'd like to book it but can't. They have no regard for the traveler with limited time in ports, & do not attempt to assist in alternate arrangements. Having cruised on Princess and Royal Caribbean, and paid half the price; this cruiseline does not compare. This will be my last viking cruise! Read Less

We had done two Viking River Cruises and wanted to experience a sea cruise. We were happy with our choice and the whole experience was wonderful including the food, the crew and the wonderful ship. We were impressed with the furnishings and the books were much appreciated as well as the extras such as blankets and cushions. We felt that we were very safe and cared for and that is important as we are seniors and far from home. Everyone on the ship were friendly and helpful. The entertainment was amazing and we think it surpassed any others we have had on vacations. The choices of music and dance were very good and also we do like the talks you gave us on our venues and some of the history. We really appreciated the Viking presence at the airports, the hotels for extensions and also in Venice at the ferry boats. We felt that though in a strange city we were always able to get advice and help when needed which is a great comfort. The cabin ard was very helpful and kept our state room amacculate and made sure our provisions were always replaced. Thank you for a wonderful experience. We highly recommend it to everyone we talk to. Breakfast was always very tasty and friendly service everywhere. When we had lunch onboard we always had choices around the ship. Dinners were the best! Special restaurants were available with gourmet meals and wines! Entertainment was always available with so much talent. Special bars were located all over the ship with very friendly and helpful bartenders. The pools were fun to jump into at the end of very hot days. Viking knows it’s business and excels at it. The new ships are elegant and (as usual) meals, service and entertainment were all excellent. Our embarkation in Rome was noteworthy as we were greeted at the airport and driven to the ship in a singular car (not a bus). The restaurants were very nice, the food quality excellent and the staff friendly and respectful. We particularly liked Manfredi’s, but we’re also impressed with the selection and quality in the World Cafe and noted the kitchen staff’s hard work and obvious pride in presentation and service. The entertainment was “Near-Broadway”; the performers were very good and the staging and theatrics impressive. The ships public areas were beautiful; signage and directions done well (it’s a big vessel, getting disoriented was not uncommon); and elevators and stairwells adequate for the number of users. The rooms were large and well appointed; with a large bathroom, ample closet and drawer space and a very helpful and attentive “Butler.” Lastly, the payment methods for beverages and tips was a welcome improvement. The excursions were well executed, but we had mixed feelings about them in part due to one guests walking limitations. The excursion guides should be more explicit in describing the amount and difficulty levels of the excursion. Naples was ok, but the amount of walking was problematic. Sicily was great. Crotone was unimpressive. Bari was gorgeous and the walking tour well executed. Crotia was perhaps the most beautiful harbor, but the walking tour was too hilly and difficult. Venice was, unsurprisingly, mobbed. Read Less

Viking was wonderful! They met us at he airport and delivered us to the hotel in which we stayed in Rome. A beautiful hotel, which was part of their package. There were Viking agents there almost round the clock to help us with anything. They took us on to the ship. The embarkation was the best of any ship we have taken. Smooth and efficient. Then the ship was absolutely beautiful. Our bags arrived very promptly and our cabin steward was right there to make sure that we were settled in and aquatinted with everything. The cabin was spacious, beautiful and very comfortable, as was the bathroom. It is a beautifully appointed ship with ample comfortable and elegant seating throughout. The ships staff were welcoming and helpful. I really can’t say enough about this entire experience. We stayed two extra nights in Venice, as we have always loved that city, and although the hotel was across the water from St Marks, it was very pleasant. In fact the hotel itself was amazing and very comfortable. This was our first experience with Viking, but it certainly will not be our last. So many passengers on our ship were repeat clients. All sang the praises of both the ocean and the river cruises...our next adventure! Read Less

Love the heated floors in the bathroom. We never experienced long lines or crowded areas. They provide you with water when you leave to the shore excursions and again when you come back. We went from Budapest to Amsterdam on the Viking MAGNI two years ago, and loved every bit of that trip, so we knew of Viking's attention to detail and commitment to excellence from firsthand experience. In 2018 we originally intended to take the St. Petersburg-to-Moscow river cruise, but found it was during the time of the World Cup. For that and a number of other reasons, we (three couples who travel together) elected to see what other cruises Viking could offer us, even though our plans were completely changed fairly close to the departure date. Viking could not have been more helpful, and credited us with every penny we had already tendered them. We got three adjacent cabins with shared verandas on the maiden voyage of Viking ORION, with no penalties and, indeed, on most favorable terms. Viking service deserves its legendary reputation: every detail is smoothly, cheerfully and professionally attended to, from airport transfers to boarding to cuisine, entertainment, physical facilities, educational programs, and on-shore tours. The ships (in our case, the longship MAGNI and the ocean cruiser ORION) are engineered and planned down to the tiniest detail - doors and drawers (and toilet lids!) that don't slam, but slide gently shut; warmed floors and mirrors in the bathroom; perfectly arrayed tables in the dining areas so that efficiency and aesthetics are both well-served; cuisine that is fresh, imaginative and related to local products and produce; real honest-to-goodness libraries sprinkled throughout the ship with worthwhile and educational volumes on every conceivable subject. But the most treasured part of the Viking experience, for me at least, was the basic company-wide policy regarding quality of life on board: no children under 18; no casinos; no art auctions or other en masse blandishments, and essentially no smoking (one tiny spot on a mid-ships open weather deck was set aside for those poor souls). The heart of the Viking experience is really not even on board the ship; I think the company wants its passengers to travel primarily as a means to the end of learning more about the world and its fascinating places and people. Every stop on either the river or the ocean cruises will provide ample opportunities for a wide variety of tours and excursions, including some at no extra charge at every stop. For example: Having been to Rome a number of times in the past, that day we elected instead to visit Tarquinia, the Etruscan necropolis and museum. The day was one of the most memorable in my life - and I've lived a long, long time. The tour guide gave a three-hour nonstop monologue that integrated geology and geography, military history, theology, architecture, graphic art, archeology and politics, and imparted to us a priceless understanding of Etruria and its people, their (literally) central role in Mediterranean history before the Roman Empire, and the uniquely peaceful amalgam of cultures that their open society encouraged and created. Viking cruises are meant to be enjoyed by thoughtful adults who want to visit other lands and other peoples in order to learn about them. The comforts of their ships and the delights of the on-board experience are magnificent, but always in service to getting ashore and experiencing other lands. Read Less

We fell in love with this itinerary, with the boat and with this crew. My husband and I are in our mid 40s, and have started to enjoy more luxurious cruise lines. We compare this experience to a Crystal cruise we took approximately 1 1/2 years ago. What we liked about our Viking experience is that there definitely seemed to be a wider mix of ages on the ship. We enjoyed visiting and meeting with peers closer to our own age as well as older couples travelling. Now onto the Viking Orion itself - by far the nicest cruise ship we have been on. It certainly helps that the ship is new - everything is modern and clean. Embarkation and debarkation were a synch - no waiting and no lines. CABIN: We stayed on the 5th floor - situated perfectly in the middle of the ship so you can easily reach 7th and 2nd floors for dining. We had a penthouse veranda room - PLENTY of storage, shower pressure was impressive. My only gripe is that the mattress was a tad hard for my taste. Use of self-service laundry was easy and convenient - located on every floor. DINING: Specialty restaurants on board are a MUST. Food in the world cafe was mostly great, similar experience in the main dining room. One tip we were glad once we figured out is that you can actually view the menus for each restaurant (which change daily) on your stateroom TV or on the Viking app. This can help you decide which restaurant you want to go to for a given meal! We did not do the silver spirits package and believe that it was better to mostly drink wines that came with dinner but occasionally purchased a bottle of wine and found prices to be extremely reasonable. FITNESS CENTER/SPA: Please do NOT miss the spa! It is simply outstanding. I was also impressed that you can use the facilities (hydrapool, steam room, jacuzzi) without a spa appointment. These facilities are open to you anytime. ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTIVITIES: This is one area where we think Viking can improve. They had minimal entertainment in the evening, although sometimes they brought in local cultural talent which was wonderful to see. We wishes for the shows to be longer and for there to be more on board entertainment in general. They do have interactive game tables (computerized game board) you can play a variety of games on which was unique and cool. SERVICE: Outstanding and impeccable PORTS and EXCURSIONS: We enjoyed included tours included for Pisa, St Tropez, and Barcelona. We did mostly half day tours through Viking which allowed us time to explore the city on our own for the second half of the day since there was ample time at each port. We will be signing up for another Viking cruise. Despite the few negatives I noted, we would still rate this cruise as excellent. Read Less

My husband and I were interested in seeing the French Riviera, Spain, and Italy. We signed up for pre-cruise and post-cruise extensions and the whole experience was absolutely lovely. The pre-cruise hotel in Madrid, The Intercontinental Hotel Madrid, was absolutely beautiful. Viking had excursions planned and you also had time to do your own thing. When it was time to get to the ship, Viking had a representative help all the travelers get on the train from Madrid to Barcelona which was most helpful because with the Viking rep, Charles, there was never any confusion about where we were supposed to be at any time. The young man had it under control at all times. The actual cruise ship was beautiful, clean, fun, delicious, entertaining, and comfortable. The people that work for Viking are all English speaking and really good at what they do. Our cabin attendant, Delia, was absolutely the most efficent helpful young lady I have ever seen. She had a young man that worked with her that was as equally excellent. I think his name was Bom-Bom or something like that -- excuse my ignorance. The restaurants were really good in that you could make healthy choices and also have not so healthy choices for food if that's what you want. I was really glad that Viking didn't run their cruise like a food fest. The last cruise I took 30 years ago had a midnight buffet and really heavy meals. I felt bloated when I got home. Not with Viking. They have really healthy food and a gym as well. The shore excursions were all very fun and interesting. It was very warm during the time we were there, but I would not change a thing. The post-cruise extension in Rome was also done very well. Our hotel was lovely and Viking had a representative at the hotel 12 hours a day while we were there. When it was time to get to the airport, Viking had a transport van ready for us, took us to the airport, and when we got to the airport Viking representatives were there to help us get our luggage to the checkin counter for our airline. Viking really takes care of their passengers and I will never take any other cruise line for sure. We also left some of our things we purchased in the room and Viking sent them to us in the mail. Wow. I tell everyone about my experiences on Viking because they need to know how comprehensive their service is. Viking cruises make for a true vacation. Read Less

A quick intro. This was our first time on Viking Ocean, my previous cruise experience was western Med on Regent Mariner. Traveled with my mom, who has a lot of cruise experience on a variety of lines. Mom picked the cruise, I was the lucky travel companion. Cruise departed from Rome and traveled to Barcelona. This itinerary has the ship traveling in the evening/at night. We were lucky to be on the 2nd cruise on Orion, which is new and beautiful. Embarkation - we arrived the day before and stayed at the Hilton at the airport. Our TA arranged for us to meet the Viking transport at the airport for our transfer to the ship. We were a bit nervous about this, since most people were coming directly from a flight and we were afraid we might miss the group. Turned out we should not have worried, when we arrived at the airport we immediately found a crowd of travelers wearing the red Viking stickers and made our way to the buses. There was no crowd in the terminal, we were able to process within a few minutes after waiting in a very short line, and then quickly went aboard. The staff greats you with a glass of champagne as you board, with some staff wearing traditional nordic clothing. The customer service desk is open 24/7, and it is good idea to talk to them when you board, the lines get longer later in the day. With cabin access at 1pm, we had some time to explore the ship. Orion is a beautiful ship. The public spaces are wide open, she never feels crowded. We went directly to the spa to book some services. The spa is unique and the staff is quite helpful. Mom signed up for a facial and I signed up for a guided experience using the nordic spa. This is an event open to 10 people once per cruise (they did it twice this journey, lots of interest) for a low fee which includes a body brush and various creams and lotions. The gym is next door - clean and really well appointed. When I came down to exercise in the morning each piece of cardio equipment was preloaded with a fresh towel and bottle of water. There were plenty of sanitary wipes and a hand washing station, too. I had everything I needed for a great workout. After the spa we went upstairs to what I call the "food court". This area, with both indoor and outdoor seating, serves food from various stations. The fresh made gelato every day was a favorite. I love that Viking had no extra sugar added gelato every day (with a new flavor every day!) and no added sugar cookies too. Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner, and so is soda. The wait staff was quick to bring water and wine, it took a while to get a soda sometimes, and I found it worked better to order two glasses each time. I often ran into other diners who were ordering two sodas at a time - the glass holds half a can. We had a penthouse veranda cabin. One thing we really liked - our stewed came in and introduced herself and then went over all of the features of the cabin with us. The min fridge was preloaded with an assortment of soda, beer, champagne, mini liquor bottles and 3 tiny toblerone candy bars. We knew what we wanted in the fridge - lots of Diet Coke and wine instead of champagne, so we left a note for the crew member who does the mini fridge refills. There is no place in the fridge for the ice bucket - you can ask for ice each day but half of it does melt while you are out and about. The room featured way more pillows than we knew what to do with, pillows on the beds, pillows on the couch, pillows on the chairs. We had the two bed configuration, the room included a couch and chair as well as two tables. The veranda had two chairs and a table as well. Loved that there was a big window and a regular door to the veranda rather than a slider! The TV is large, with several news channels to choose from as well as BBC documentaries and TED talks as well as some movies. There are two speciality restaurants on the ship as well as the main dining room and the food court. We tried Manfredis and it was OK. The menus at the Chefs Table were not for us. We found that the main dining room, which was never crowded, was our favorite. The service was excellent, and they can even bring you food from one of the other restaurants if you ask. Tea time is simple - the guitar player plays and sings, and everyone group receives a tray with some tiny sandwiches and 4 treats. The tea is simple. This is one area which was disappointing to me after the sumptuous tea's on Regent and the lively trivia games at tea time. One our ship the tea was never crowded, there was plenty of room for more people. The entertainment on the ship is very low key. No big broadway style nightly shows on this trip. There is a cast of 4 young singers who did two shows, the cruise director had one show where he sang with the band. They brought in some local entertainers - an opera group in Livorno which was very entertaining and included audience participation - a string group another night, and a wonderful local music group in Barcelona. You can find live music throughout the trip at tea, during the Munch Moments, in the public areas and in the night club. There was a live music dance night on the pool deck as well. Orion has a planetarium style show which was very interesting and there was a stargazing lecture one night with the resident astronomer. We did a combination of the included shore excursions and some which were for an additional fee. By far our favorite was a trip to Cassis when we were in Marseille. This little French town felt like it was Belle's hometown with it's perfect little store fronts and cafes. There was a beach and the excursion included a lovely boat ride on the crystal clear waters to see the various fjords (they called them something else, but they were fjords). It was market day and there were vendors with fresh fruit and veg, handmade soaps and other crafts and various merchandise. Our other paid shore excursion was Florence by Tuk Tuk. Since the drive from port is so long you don't get nearly enough time to fully explore Florence, but Tomas the Tuk Tuk driver made sure we saw all the main sights and took us to a church above the city with amazing views of Florence. The meet up point for the Florence excursions is a square with both an excellent leather store and jewelry store. The buses for all the trips had great air conditioning, which was cold to American expectations. Points to Viking for this! We visited Pisa on the included excursion, which included a lot of walking from the bus to the square. The tour included too much "time on our own" as there was only one restaurant there and no real shops - and a lot of very aggressive vendors. We took the included walking tour in Monaco, and since the ship was there all day and evening we were able to head back in town to visit the casino. In St Tropez the included tour takes you to a planned community with canals like Venice. The community was built in the 70s. Luckily it was market day there and we were able to shop at the local market for food and gifts. We could have used more time to shop at this local market. Then the tour bus took us to St Tropez for a walking tour of the town. The best part of this port day was sitting in the infinity pool or on deck watching the amazing yachts go by - you can google them by name to see who they belong to. The included tour of Barcelona takes you around the city in the bus - you can see some of the Gaudi buildings from the bus. You tour the cathedral, and then many people departed from the group to spend their day in the city. There is a bus from the city to the port, so you can enjoy your day in town. That spa is an amazing place. Access to the spa is included in your cruise fare. During my spa experience, the staff lead us through the nordic experience - we started with dry brushing our skin, then into the sauna, then into the snow room - we did that a few times - rubbing snow balls on our skin. When you are done with that there is an ice bucket dumpshower, and also a fabulous shower with many different sprays. The pool in the spa is a hydrotherapy pool, and there is a hot tub as well. There are also heated loungers. If you travel viking ocean do not miss the spa! The pool has two pools on deck - there is an infinity pool and a regular pool. The infinity pool is deeper and colder. It is amazing to sit in the infinity pool and watch the yachts go past. The crew on this ship is very eager to please, and we received several surveys during the cruise - and the staff actually followed up on them, calling me to ask questions about my responses. After his show the cruise director asked everyone to make sure they filled out the surveys, he stressed that they would be responsive, and you could see some things changed immediately in response - for example, the dining room switched from room temp water to ice water after the surveys. We were always greeted with a smile, and if it was within their power the staff granted your wish. The customer service desk is open 24/7 and they patiently answered all of our questions. You can find a map of each port in the book case in front of the customer service desks, and also on the dock in the area under the red canopy. The Viking passengers seemed to be a friendly crowd, and there was a wide age range of passengers, but not too many teen aged kids. Read Less

My wife and I just returned from a eight day Viking Western Mediterranean cruise. The ship is brand new (June 2018). It was beautiful and had lots of modern amenities. In addition, the Viking staff were wonderful. We loved our cabin attendant, the wait staff, kitchen staff, tour guides, entertainment, etc. The Food and dining choices were excellent. Also the Spa and Workout area are top notch. As to ports, we visited Pisa (one of our favorites), Florence, Monaco, St. Topaz, Marseille, and Barcelona. The ports were a bit 'stick' from heat, but I blame that on July and not Viking. As the ship was brand new, there were a few 'glitches'. Our in room coffee maker and built in USB recharge ports were non-functional. Also, the ship had frequent elevator issues were one or more of the six elevators were always down. Also, our mid ship cabin had an extremely weak WiFi signal. We had to go to a common area in order to access the ship's WiFi. Tips: 1) BOOK YOUR EXCURSION EARLY! We were used to Vikings River Cruises were you would book your excursion once you got on the ship. Not so with the Ocean Cruises. Book early or you are unlikely to get the excursion you want. 2) Book dinner at one of the specialty restaurants as soon as you board the ship! We were slow on the draw here and could not get a formal reservation at either of the two specialty restaurants, however you can always just show up and depending on demand, they may be able to seat you. 3) Download the Viking App before you arrive. It will help you quickly book your tours and dinner reservations, as well as act as daily guide to activities. Bonus Tip! The ship has free on board laundry facilities (including detergent). Four washer/dryers per deck. You don't have to overpack knowing you can do a laundry run mid week! Read Less

Our cruise was on the Mediterranean, from Rome to Barcelona. We did the Rome extension before our cruise began--the accommodations in Rome were excellent. The hotel staff bent over backwards to get all of us into our rooms early, when we arrived at noon from the airport. So much to see in Rome--I wish we had gone even earlier than the 2 days allotted! The Viking crew took excellent care of us from the time we got off the plane in Rome until we were checked in for our flight in Barcelona. The ship was beautiful; our cabin was pristine, and the service staff was excellent in every part of the ship. The food was excellent and since it was included in the price of the cruise, we were free to try entrees that we normally would not have. Our shore excursions were informative and also included in the price of the cruise, with other options available for a modest price. I was delighted to find free self-laundry facilities available. Overall, everything was top-notch and we felt pampered. We did not travel with children; I don't think this cruise would have appealed to our young teenagers at all. The entertainment and facilities on-board the ship were geared more towards adults, and they probably would have found the excursions to be boring. My only "complaint" is that we were very rushed between connecting flights upon re-entry into the US. I caught the tight connection on our out-going flights and was able to request a longer lay-over. Our lay-over on the return trip seemed adequate, but since we are not frequent international travelers, I had forgotten about the extended time required to clear immigration and customs. If our connecting flight had not been delayed, we would not have made it. We RAN through O'Hare and right up the jet-way onto the plane, and they immediately closed the door. If Viking books your flights (which I would recommend, given the price savings), make sure there are more than a few hours between connections on the return. Read Less

My family have been on Viking River and Ocean cruises and just raved about them. It took very little encouragement to convince me to try a Viking cruise. I have been to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda with other cruse lines over the years. Viking was truly the most outstanding one yet. There are so many wonderful places to choose, in addition to terrific Pricing and amenities that other cruises don’t even consider. For my girlfriend, it was her first Ever cruise, she started with The Best. We are currently looking into our second cruise, Trying to decide between another Ocean or a River Cruise. The entire crew, from top to bottom of ship’s order, was always happy, helpful and went the ‘extra’ mile, when needed. The ports terrific, as well as the people we met. There was only one guide and one add-on tour, we took on our own, that we felt was not ‘up to snuff’, but we did register our concern, which I am sure was taken care of. The ship was magnificent. The majority of the crew and staff were excellent. A few surly or inattentive waiters. Orion July 8 Rome to Barcelona The big problem was the food at dinner. Our experience, as well as those dining around us. A few times the food was so salty it was inedible . Fish was frequently dry and overdone. When mentioned to wait staff, they said they were aware of the problems because so many guests had sent the food back . Cabin attendants were great, accommodations good. Very elegant experience. All ruined by the poor quality of food in the dining rooms. Consistently poor across the three main seated venues. Particularly jarring in that the wait staff acknowledged the problem, and just shrugged it off. Six of us cancelled our next viking oven cruise because of this experience. For the money, we can do better elsewhere. Comments were sent to viking, no response yet. Read Less

We choose this cruise for our honeymoon because of the positive reviews we had seen on various websites. Prior to booking, my wife confirmed multiple times that they will be able to accommodate vegetarians and me being allergic to eggs. Unfortunately, the Viking sales representatives had not communicated our dietary restrictions with the actual cruise chef staff; thus, there were very limited food options available for us to eat, with most of the food that we could eat being very salty and bland (think canned goods variety). Honestly, our honeymoon food experience was one of the worst food experiences we have ever had to the point that we were subjugated to buying food on the Excursions to make sure we had at least one decent meal during the day. While on the ship, we ended up eating snacks we had bought from home for the entirety of the cruise as the dining onboard was atrocious. When we attempted to complain of the issue towards the end of the cruise, our concerns were heard calmly by the head chef in the cruise who did manage to ensure we had one good meal while we were onboard. However, after having one good meal, things ended up reverting back to the mean, with most of the restaurant chefs/staff making us feel very uncomfortable because we had complained about the food options. To make matters worse, some of the staff seemed to dismiss our concerns about the food chalking it up to us “being of Indian descent”, as if to imply that our palate did not appreciate the “fine European dining” they were attempting to emulate on the ship. In short, the food was abysmal for vegetarians/non-egg eating vegetarians; and when we brought up the issue, we had modest success in rectifying the issue with some of the staff insulting our ethnicity in implying that Indians are not capable of appreciating the fine dining European experience they were attempting to provide on the ship. A horrible nightmare of a cruise! Read Less

I joined a small group so didn’t choose the cruise or ship but enjoyed the Viking process. There was no line when we boarded and we went to our room after exploring the ship. I like to start a cruise by looking for a quiet apot were I can retreat. We had reservations at Manfredi’s and enjoyed our first Viking meal. The breakfast crowd was overwhelming the first morning but better when I found places to retreat with my first meal of the day. The room was cozy, but well designed. I was disappointed the the included coffee pot didn’t work and asked them to remove it. Beds were confortable and storage space good. Robes, slippers, hair drier and bath amenities were included. The spa area was nice and I enjoyed the Viking sauna, steam and cold water plunge. I went on the last night and they were defrosting the snow room so I didn’t get that experience. The gym looked good but I was more interested in the food, pool, dining and shore excursions, both private and Viking. Aside from the planetarium talks, which were well done, I didn’t participate in enrichment activities. I enjoyed classical music on floors 1 and 7, along with the, mostly, quiet and comfortable lounge spaces. There were books everywhere and enjoyed browsing the collections. This is no party ship and I enjoyed it. Read Less
