Selected itinerary for the ports and ability to spend a few days in Rome. Embarkation was the BEST, easiest, fastest we've ever experienced. We were boarded and eating lunch in MDR a full hour before our check in time.

This was the first cruise I had ever been on as I had always been resistant to cruising.
We picked the ship and itinerary carefully and I liked the idea of travelling on a fairly new ship.

This was my 12th cruise on HAL. I've been on every size ship in their fleet. While I still prefer smaller ships (RIP soon Prinsendam), I have made my peace with behemoths and really like HAL's newest iterations. Having been on the Koningsdam twice, there was no learning curve on the Nieuw Statendam.

Food was great in the Dining Room, Lido Marketplace, Afternoon Tea, Canaletto, NY Deli, Grand Dutch Cafe, Gellato shop. Very few hiccups in the food areas. We mainly ate dinner in the Dining Room. We were booked for a cruise on this ship later and were fascinated by the idea of sailing on it the first time. After spending a week with family in Pennsylvania, we flew from Philadelphia to Rome and explored the city for about a week. Even that was not quite enough - so much to see! We did the 14 day Premier sailing of the Nieuw Statendam, from Rome to Fort Lauderdale.
We spent 6 days prior to the cruise in Rome, and on December 5th headed to Civitavecchia to board the Nieuw Statendam.
