Except for dinner, meals are not long drawn-out affairs, as there is always somewhere to go ashore or something to do onboard. Dining is limited to two hours or less for breakfast, lunch or dinner. For dinner, passengers tend to arrive at or near opening time.
Ocean Voyager has two options for each meal, the Coastal Dining Room or the more casual, buffet-only The Grill. The menus for both are similar, but the buffet has fewer choices. Dishes are mostly from American cuisine with the occasional ethnic option. Seating is open, and no reservations are needed.
Coastal Dining Room (Deck 1): The Coastal Dining Room on Deck 1 is the primary dining spot. Breakfast and lunch hours change according to the day's activities. Breakfast is a combination buffet and hot dishes to order. The buffet has pastries, cereal, fruit, cold meats, smoked salmon, cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs and bacon. You can order pancakes, omelets and other egg dishes. Lunch is ordered off the menu and served. The menu has one each of appetizer, soup and salad. The five mains are fish such as flounder, a meat such as stuffed chicken, burger, pasta and vegetarian. Dessert might be blueberry pie.
Dinner showcases regionally inspired cuisine, sometimes with fresh local fish purchased ashore. The dinner menu offers two appetizers, two soups, two salads, four mains (meat, fish, pasta and vegetarian) and desserts or cheese plate. Each dish is displayed at the entrance, so you can look before you order. Appetizers might be lamb meatballs or chicken sate. Soup examples are miso and pumpkin bisque. Mains include grilled walleye, lobster, rack of lamb, osso buco or mushroom and eggplant moussaka. Always available are grilled chicken breast, baked potato and french fries. Desserts include chocolate tart, red velvet cake, ice cream or cheeses.
The service, quality and presentation are first-rate, and complimentary house wine flows freely at lunch and dinner, or you may order a beer or bring a cocktail from the bar, all at no charge. Seating is always open at tables for two (only a handful), four, six or eight.
The Grill (Deck 4): The smaller, 50-seat The Grill on Deck 4 is a casual buffet offering three meals a day in two-hour timeframes overlapping the main dining room schedule, though starting a half-hour earlier. Most dishes are also available on the dining room menu, but with fewer options. The Grill was completely remodeled during the 2019 refit. Previously open air, the space has been enclosed, and large windows now encircle the aft-facing dining area. The floor is polished wood. The furniture is new -- wooden tables (many for two, others for four), white canvas chairs and bench seating along two walls.
All meals are buffet style. Breakfast has the same buffet items as the dining room; there are no cooked-to-order eggs as there is no kitchen. Lunch is a soup, salads, hot dishes and desserts from the dining room menu. Dinner features salads, mains (meat from a carving station, chicken, fish, vegetarian), desserts and cheeses. A full bar serves complimentary cocktails, wine and beer during lunch and dinner hours only. The Grill has a machine for making your own specialty coffees which is always available.
Compass Lounge (Deck 2): Coffee from a self-serve specialty coffee machine and tea are always available in the lounge. Pastries are set out in the morning, cookies the rest of the day and are the only between-meal snacks offered until the hot and cold cocktail hour canapes. A formal afternoon tea is served in the lounge on sea days only.
Room Service: There is no room service.
