Hurtigruten's newest ship, Spitsbergen, launched on July 6, 2016, in Svolvaer, a fishing village on the island of Lofoten, in the Arctic Circle.

The 335-passenger MS Spitsbergen will spend its first season in Norway, alternating between the Norwegian coast -- including Geirangerfjord on northern itineraries -- and polar expeditions, before heading to Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe and Shetland Islands and Arctic Canada in 2017.

It brings the Norwegian line's fleet up to 14 vessels, with up to four more new builds on order over the next few years.

The ship is not a new build, but has been completely refurbished and adapted to sail in polar waters. It is also modern and environmentally friendly, and has been adapted to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
