This is my first river cruise so I don’t have a comparison with any other cruise line. I started with an optional 3 days in Prague where I had an excellent guide. In fact, on all the excursions I went on the local guides they use were excellent. I met the ship in Linz and embarkation went without a hitch. My cabin was comfortable and very clean. I was traveling by myself so can’t answer for the space available for two people. The ship was well kept and the overall cleanliness seemed high. Staff always seemed to be available to help or answer questions. Coming home was a real letdown as I couldn’t just walk down the hall and be served breakfast, lunch or dinner. Everything I had was excellent and they provided enough variety to satisfy almost any appetite. Several evenings we were provided with onboard entertainment from the local area. These were very enjoyable and gave a nice respite after a day of excursions. I chose this cruise because of the variety of activities they offered. There was a range of active, discovery or classic. I ended up taking quite a few walking tours along with several of the optional tours. I did a concert in Vienna and a Hungarian dinner and wine pairing. Again, both were well done. The only glitch, and this was no ones fault, is that we had to be bussed into Budapest rather than sail in. This was due to the river being too low for the boat to navigate past Slovakia. The captain was quite apologetic but it’s difficult to argue with nature. They handled the change very professionally and we didn’t miss out on any planned activities in Budapest. If I had it to do over again I probably would spend a little more time in Budapest. That’s just my impression. Overall, the experience was great and I certainly would use Avalon again. Probably a different route next time but I would have no hesitation signing up again. Read Less

We chose Avalon for our first river cruise because of the itinerary, the amenities offered during the cruise and the cabin layout. The ship was spacious and our cabin was very comfortable. I especially enjoyed the french balcony that allowed us to breath the fresh air and see the river sites clearly. We particularly enjoyed the breakfast and lunch buffets and afternoon tea was a treat. Our wait staff were wonderful! We laughed so much during our meals! We were so happy to find two other like-minded couples to share our experience, so our expectation of getting to know people from other countries was definitely met! We also appreciated our cruise director who was wonderful at guiding us and responsive during stressful times. Evening entertainment was mixed, some of the evenings were more enjoyable than others, which is to be expected. The ports and shore excursions met our expectations of learning a bit more about the different countries and their regions. All in all, an enjoyable experience that we will recommend to others and repeat! Read Less

Had high expectations for Danube cruise. Paid nearly £5000 for two for 1 week. Turned out to be very poor value for money. Not very much to say that is positive apart from visiting the beautiful cities of Budapest and Vienna. Food was not very good, not a lot of choice and found the staff did not always replenish quickly. Drinks were included with lunch and dinner but only one choice of red, white so if you didn’t like what was on offer you had to pay for an alternative. Not much on offer entertainment wise apart from Anton and Erin being on board for one night which was excellent. You sometimes had to ask to get another drink as not enough staff. Most of the staff were very nice although a few were rude. If we ever do another river cruise it definitely will not be on an emerald boat. Read Less

The ship it was built in 2012 and it still looked brand new, our cabin was spacious and well equipped. We arrived on 12 July 2019 and checked into the Movenpick Hotel, Amsterdam City Center, the next morning to Breakfast and finally closed up all our bags ready to board the Avalon Vista to get settled. We had breakfast and prep for our Amsterdam Canal Cruse plus a walking tour, every day there was tours to a lot of the sights. The meals that were provided were very delicious, for those that didn't want a large meal there was a small were served in the Panorama Lounge, it was also the location for all the briefings for the next day’s activities and music/dancing. Each day was filled with tours provided by the cruise lines or optional fee. There were never wants for service because what you might want it was provided. The ports and shore excursions were very well arranged and informative. We know that it takes a lot of planning but the only disappointment was the day of disembarkment from the ship would we would like a mini tour of Basel. This was our first trip on a long ship but it won't be our last because we truly enjoyed it. Read Less

This was our second time booking with Viking and we knew that every detail would be taken care of. The service was superior, the food was excellent and all excursions included were very well organized along with very informing guides. The small cruise made it easy to mingle with other guests, the smaller ship made it easy to get around. The hotels chosen for us in both Prague and Paris were centrally located which made it very easy to explore on our own The negatives....most ports required transportation to the cities on our itinerary, sometimes taking up to two hours. Therefore following our tour we had very little time to explore before we got back on a bus again. The entertainment at night was OK, but we really missed the Broadway productions found on the larger ships. Seating was at a minimum sometimes especially on the forward deck and lounge area in the evening. Read Less

We boarded and informed the ship had only one engine. This was replaced 12 days into our cruise. This meant we were unloaded and loaded at small jetties spent hours on coaches and less time at our destinations. A lock broke near Frankfurt which put us back another 12 hours. The ship is not fit for purpose. The toilet system broke down 3 times. Internet very bad reception. T V was in German had not been switched to a English satellite. The food was O K but deserts terrible. Coffee in the restaurant to strong and cold complained to the Hotel Manager but no improvement. Staff in restaurant needed training not serving ladies first, reaching across to deliver or pick up plates. The temperature control in our cabins did not work. We some times had to endure unpleasant smells when docked closed to other ships. The ship needed net curtains to most cabins for privacy when in port or docked next to another ship. Read Less

This was a full charter from Hanau to Passau on the River Main and Canal to Passau. The ship was clean, Crew from eastern Europe and the Philipines. Most were friendly and helpful. The Food was good but the portions small. we had a Drinks package. The wines served were good and plentyful. The cabin was large and more than enough storage space, the bathroom was also larger than on many ships. The Captain was customer unfriendly from the start. The weather forcast was for sunny skies, Temp between 20 und 25c just perfect. He said the upper deck was to be closed due to low bridges, this was true as many bridges was low with only 10cm headroom, but the bridges were at times more than 5 hrs apart, still he refused to open the upper deck, this was just due to a lazy Captain and his Crew, they just did not want to go up and put up the railings, which would have taken arounf 10 -15mins. because of this everybody had to stay in thier cabins or sit a over crowded lounge. Even when the ship was in port, the upper deck was not opened at first. one stop in Bamberg, the ship arrived 1.5 Hrs late, the guests had to wait 45 mins before the Captian opened the deck, first the rubbish had to be taken off the ship, one Lady asked if rubbish was more important that guests to which the Reply was YES !!!! Chairs and stools were not made available by the Crew, when guests picked them up for themselves the Captain was Angry and said " you are not allowed to cross over the lines," the Reply was then make sure the chairs are here when you al last open the upper deck. We had over 50 locks to go through, nearly every lock the ship was jolted back and forth against the walls, on my many river Cruises this has never happened so ofter before. This Captian really made this a cruise to remember !!! Would I sail with them again Never !! Other companies open the upper deck after each Bridge!! Read Less

We had been on Viking once before in China and loved the experience. The stops were great, the food was good, and the crew was extremely helpful. The cabin we had was clean and the cabin steward was attentive to our needs. The cruise director was a Hoot and gave us both informed about coming attractions but also sang like a bird. For us, food service is acceptable. We traveled with a picky eater which made dinners on board a problem some times. Breakfast was the best meal of the day because of the custom make eggs each morning. We traveled to Budapest for seven-days. We have excellent weather and even on our one bad rainy day, we were entertained by our tour guide with stories and enjoyed a great lunch. Arriving in Budapest at night was the highlight of the trip. The cruise director alerted the camera buffs to be ready for the run and return to our dock. Read Less

The entire staff was the best, always available if we had any questions, and able to help with anything. The food and wine were excellent, and we had great local guides on our outings. My adult daughter and I had a terrific time, and enjoyed every minute. We met some lovely people on board, and we both loved the smaller sized ship. Our cabin was perfect for us - but we really didn't spend much time there. We didn't partake of the entertainment, as after a leisurely dinner, we were ready to relax and get ready for the next day's adventure. Shore excursions were diverse and very interesting. We particularly loved the hike through the vineyard (with a wine tasting afterward, of course!), and our cooking class. We loved learning some of the history and sampling food and wine in the smaller towns along our route on the Rhone River. We are ready to go again! Read Less

Staff was wonderful,as was all the excursions they offered. The ceremony at Normandy Beach was very moving. I don’t have any negative comments to give about this cruise. The ports and all the sights were very enjoyable. The ship was very clean and laid out very well. The food served was excellent. The embarkation and disembarkation all was very smooth, and handled very well by the ship staff. I have sailed Viking before and have two additional cruises booked right now. I would very highly recommend Viking to anyone and everyone. I recommend both the river cruises as well as the ocean cruises. The service and ports of call are all well thought out and are offered at no cost in most instances, also the free WiFi and the beverages offered for no additional cost at meal times is a great plus. I absolutely would recommend Viking to anyone. This cruise was spectacular. We had the large cabin, not sure i would go that big again, you really don't spend that much time in your room so you really don't need it. Gia our cruise director was fantastic. The only problem that we had was we were supposed to get early access to our cabin but we were one of the last people to get their cabins. Also when we got to the airport we didn't have a viking rep to help us through the airport and our driver dropped us at the wrong place. The food was excellent the excursions were great. We did miss one of our ports because of the yellow jacket protests. We will most certainly do a viking again. Another thing that was really cool about this cruise was there was a bunch of different age groups. Read Less

Scenic had at least 3 to 4 weeks notice of low water levels that interrupted my trip but did not advise or give any options to postpone until better conditions prevailed. I would not have had a problem if this was a last minute change to the itinerary but because this was a well know fact to Scenic they still did not communicate the problem. I saved for over 10 years for this Luxury First Class River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam and spent a lot of time changing ships, packing and unpacking and taking 4 hour coach rides to destinations. I did not plan a Bus excursion I planned a River Cruise. On a bright note the crew, staff, facilities accommodations on board were lovely. Everyone on board was caring and compassionate. The ports of calls visited were amazing and all the excursions were packed with information from English speaking local guides. Read Less

We've received many Vikings brochures but never booked one. When the brochure for the Danube Waltz Cruise arrived we were fascinated; we'd long wanted to try a Vikings Cruise and this itinerary seemed perfect for us - and it was! We booked both the pre-excursion stay in Prague and the post-excursion stay in Budapest. We saw/did everything we possibly could during the 3 day stay in each city, immersed ourselves in their cultures, and fell in love with both of them. Our hotel in Prague, Art Nouveau Palace Hotel, is absolutely beautiful, in a fabulous central location and thus walkable to almost everything in Prague. The Vikings staff were with us from the time we got off the plane in Prague to the time we went through the Security as we left Budapest; the Vikings desks in each hotel were valuable resources. When we left Prague for the drive to Passau, a bus (one of 2) picked us up at the hotel for a 4 hour drive through the Czech and then the German country-sides and delivered us to Passau where we embarked the ship. The Hermod is a lovely ship, our cabin (109) was perfect and our cabin steward terrific. Food at every meal was delicious and beautifully presented and the wine excellent. The wait staff were professional, pro-active in taking our orders, and conscientious in making sure everything met our expectations. The entire ship's staff was excellent - knowledgeable, thoughtful, caring, always responsive to any questions/requests, with the added plus of great senses of humor. Program Director Lee was truly outstanding; he did a great job with the programming, he interacted superbly with the guests, and always was interested in our feedback on shore excursions as well as our experiences on board. His descriptions of the views during our scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley were wonderful. The evening we sailed into Budapest at 10:00 pm, Monday, July 2, he made sure everyone knew to be on deck to see the magnificent lights of this beautiful city. Truly, is was an incredibly spectacular sight that took our breaths away! Not to be missed! We found every port to be wonderful to have a chance to explore - to at least give us a taste of it, and the Vikings excursions we selected were all very good. We'd like to highlight a few that we especially treasured. Even in the rain, the Passau walking tour was very pretty and the organ concert in St. Stephen's Cathedral magnificent--to hear our wedding processional (Purcel's Trumpet Voluntary) played on that instrument was very moving. The scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley was incredibly lovely - and Lee's narration perfect without being intrusive. We thought the tour of the Wachau Valley Winery - the Morwald family's winery, was the best winery tour and tasting we have ever experienced! Our group was small, which made it more personable, our Vikings guide fun, Erhard personally gave us the tour and was an absolute delight, and the 6 delicious wines we tasted were served in crystal glasses with generous pours, along with baskets of fresh bread. We bought 4 bottles! We thoroughly enjoyed our Danube Waltz cruise. To put our experience in perspective, we have traveled extensively around the world and also have been on many ocean cruises including 2 transatlantics, a Mediterranean cruise, Alaskan, and many different Caribbean islands, and we're doing a Panama Canal cruise in March 2019. We would absolutely do another Vikings River cruise. But first, we actually booked (on board the ship) the British Isles Ocean Cruise for the spring of 2020 -- along with our dear friends with whom we were traveling. We are very much looking forward to that. Read Less

The Viking river cruise boats were very nice and clean. We would definitely use Viking cruise line again. We met lots of people from all over and everyone was very nice. This Scenic Cruise was recommended by our travel agent who understands our tastes and preferences for quality vacations. There was little flexibility on our dates, we booked only 2 months in advance so our best option was the Danube cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg. We were very impressed with the outstanding all inclusive service, fine organization, quality of the dining, most guides, excursions and our overall experience on the JASPER. Every attempted was made to satisfy our every need. Daniel our personal Butler was delightful. Dinner service would have been enhanced by a few extra severs to help with the work load. The ‘Tailor Made’ devices worked very well when we had live guided tours but not well at all on the self guided tours. They are a great idea but need more refinement to become user friendly and a helpful navigational aid rather than a frustration. My husband suffers from motion sickness; the stability of the river boat was superb and he had no issues. There were great options for day trips. Nora, our guide in Budapest was delightful as was Veronica on our tour of the Belvedere. I particularly loved biking along the Danube which was executed to perfection and would have enjoyed even more options for physical activities. We loved the intimate size of the boat and the limited number of guests on this cruise. This was our first experience on a river cruise, I hope it isn’t our last. Read Less

Bartenders knew our name and drink on the first day and were great! Servers went out of their way to be helpful and courtious: one example: we wee having coffee on the third deck where continental breakfast was served. As we were approaching a lock I sad to my wife" I would love to see this lock, but we need to go to the dining room for breakfast". This was overheard by a server at the continental buffet and asked what would you like from the dining room? End of season deal allowed us to experience a taste of Europe, while gaining our first experience of river cruising. From the cruise director, captain through the crew everybody went out of their way to ensure the best cruise experience ever. The shore excursions were very informative with enough time to explore on your own before returning to the boat. Learning about the local culture, food, and activities was very enlightening. The intimate environment of a couple of hundred passengers meant you got to know or recognize everyone very quickly. The meals were excellent with an offering of the local cuisine of the country we were visiting, and the open dining allowed for more opportunity to mingle and get to know a variety of shipmates. The cabins were very comfortable and functional, although we basically only slept and changed in the room. Post cruise we purchased train tickets to Prague, and the crew made sure we were disembarked in time to catch our train. We chose Viking River Cruises because we had heard so many excellent things about them from previous customers. The date and cost of the cruise also fit into our plans. We have been on the larger cruise lines and liked them, but Viking is a totally different, positive experience and totally exceeded all expectations we had. The rooms were very nice, the heated floor in the bathroom was totally awesome, the amenities were top of the line and always replenished and on hand. The complimentary water provided in the rooms was also topped off sufficiently, sometimes more than once a day. Bottled water was provided as you disembarked the ship for excursions, as well as umbrellas when the weather was wet. Viking's manner of communication while on excursions, was nothing short of awesome -- they were called "quiet boxes" with earphones and each person had their own, which was charged in your room when not in use. The person leading the excursion would talk into their own quiet box and you could hear everything being said without being right next to the guide. The staff on our ship were beyond attentive and pleasant, the who while being professional. The food was geared to the town we were visiting and always appetizing and interesting. The towns and all the history were something I will always treasure and a great and unique experience. Read Less

As we talked about doing a cruise, a friend recommended Avalon from her trips with the cruise line. I had been on Grand Circle years ago and we had heard a lot about Viking, but as we researched Avalon it sounded perfect for us. We loved everything about the cruise, the food, cabin, services, ports and excursions were all excellent. Our cruise director was excellent and most interesting to chat with especially with his wealth of information about the region. We do feel that if we were to go on another one we’d skip some of the port tours and do our own thing. Since so much information was given each day we felt we couldn’t retain much of it from day to day, even as fascinating as it was, there is just too much to absorb. Avalon is certainly first rate cruising and a cruise line we suggest to anyone we hear mention interest in doing a river cruise. We were in Amsterdam for a few days prior to departure and then went to a Swiss village when it was over so the location of our cruise was perfect for exploring areas of Europe. Read Less

We did not have any complaints, and the staff were really so nice and pleasant. We did go on every morning outing, but on the slow or gentle walking bus or guide, which suited us and we enjoyed what we saw. The entertainment was all to our liking, and the resident pianist, who also sang, was excellent too. I didn't realise there would be a dance floor, or I would have included suitable shoes, but we still managed to have a dance, which we love. I was so happy that I didn't put on any weight (having seen this happen to others on cruises) and this was due to the food that we got - there was no time we were unhappy with anything. Read Less

we saw this as an opportunity to see French towns and that did not disappoint. however the staff are fed up and unhappy. If management went undercover they'd gauge their staff as they are easy to talk to you and slag off the company. this is not good as it filters to passengers. the food is basic and certainly not top notch. complimentary drink or people on the full package do not get their glasses refilled often and it's clear the staff are under orders not to re-fill often. I mean there was a long wait between drinks. their are not enough waiters in the bar and they deliberately wander around trying not to make eye contact, again a sign on not serving too many drinks and top deck on sun lounge no staff were ever seen - shocking. shore excursions - extra trips are over priced and not value for money. other companies are certainly better. overall rating average. entertainment is poor and the pianist is clearly depressed. you could save money and put on a CD. they are now not bothered if staff or especially passengers sanitise on leaving and entering ship and not bothered if passengers sanitise going into restaurant. again, shocking as a lot of old people and infection control is paramount.
