I need to share the absolutely terrible experience my husband and I had on our recent Regent Voyager cruise – Return to Sorrento in October 2018. My husband and I had never take a cruise before so we didn’t quite know what to expect. We frequently travel and typically stay at 5 star hotels/resorts and have basically traveled the world. Because of our age (my husband turned 80 last year) we decided to try this cruise based on our friend’s recommendation and the fact that it’s becoming more and more difficult for us to travel like we have in the past. Also, we really wanted to visit Israel for my husband’s 80 birthday celebration and I personally wanted to visit the Amalfi Coast – both of which were on this specific itinerary. Our first disappointment was the condition of our penthouse suite. It was outdated, run down, dirty (the furniture was stained) and the bathroom was filed with mildew. The closet door was always opening and after several attempts at asking the crew to fix this, we finally just gave up. The tours were another major problem. They took us to complete tourist traps and to the worst restaurants in the cities. In Tel Aviv they charged us 10 Euros for a bottle of water and wasted time taking us to cheap trinket stores for shopping. The food on the ship was decent but looked nothing like the photos on their website. Every request I had was handled when I was already done eating my meal. The biggest disappointment was not being able to stop in Amalfi because of weather. I understand this was out of anyone’s control; however, the captain did not apologize and worse yet – they never reimbursed us for what we paid for the tour in Amalfi. Instead they gave us the same amount in shipboard credit and forced us to shop on the ship for things we didn’t need. It took 4 days to get our iPads/iPhones somewhat working after visiting IT several times. Lastly, once we arrived to our final port in Rome, we had to pull our own luggage out of storage and pull it all the way to our bus without any assistance from the crew. We literally felt like they threw us off the ship. In summary, we will never cruise with Regent again. The worst $30K vacation experience of our lives. Read Less

My wife and I traveled with another couple on a 10 day Mediterranean cruise aboard the Navigator. The ship was just reburbished earlier this year and was well done. We chose this cruise line due to the high end caliber advertised by Regent. We purchased a pent house level package which included business class air. The trip cost over $25,000. This Company is certainly not high end. The level of staff is very mixed, some great while others very inexperienced. We were very happy with the room. However, that's about the best thing that we can say about the trip. The problems started when our itinerary got changed and they never notified us. We found out on our own. As such, we had to changes our travel dates. Then Regent put our friends and us on different flights. It was quite a challenge battling them to get us on the same flights. We booked our Athens hotel with Regent. They charged us a fee for the bus ride from the hotel to the ship without telling us that there was a charge. We got a bill for the bus ride a week into the cruise. Once on the ship, we were surprised to see that the average age of the guests was about 75 years old. We are in our early 50's and were by far some of the youngest folks on the boat. As such, the dining, entertainment and excursions were catered to that senior age group. Dining was by far the worst experience of the cruise. The 2 main restaurants on the ship cannot handle the volume of the guests for at-will seating. We had to wait nearly every night to get a table. The average wait was 30 to 40 minutes and they do not take reservations. Once you were seated, it was not uncommon for slow service. There were times that we waited 30 or more minutes to have our order taken. There is a specialty restaurant that you are entitled to reserve dinner for at least one evening. That restaurant is very nice. However, they never had another availability for us during the entire trip. The food is mediocre at best. It is not the great cuisine on other cruise lines. Specifically, the food had no taste and was not cooked properly. I think they try to cater to a diabetic and bland diet. I will say that they tried their best to accommodate my gluten free issue. The excursions were arduous and got more frustrating the further you got into the trip. As they were slow moving getting the folks tendered off the ship and then on the bus. The average group size was about 30. It would take the poor guide a long time to get the folks off the bus, then to the bathroom, then get on with the tour. So a lot of valuable time was wasted on bathroom breaks etc. That's tough to swallow when the tour is on a tight schedule of only 4 or 5 hours. It generally left us with no time for lunch at a port or any free time. Overall, the cruise fell far short and was not nearly worth the large dollars spent. Hence the low rating when considering the value for the money. I attempted to discuss my issues with guest relations. However, they do not let you speak to a live person. You must email guest relations. I emailed them on September 29, 2016 with 4 pages of compliments and complaints. I requested that I speak to a "live" person to discuss my issues. They never responded to my email. I called Regent on October 25, 2016 (27 days later) and attempted to get a customer service or guest relations employee to speak with. I just got voice mails. I finally got a live person when I selected the option to book a new cruise. I explained my situation and he said that I would get a response soon. So I received a canned letter today that did not acknowledge any of my issues and thanked me for taking the time to give them feedback. Very impersonal! My experience with this Company is that they do not live up to the high end caliber that they hold themselves out to be. You don't even get to speak to a real person. They simply do not appear to care about former guests. Read Less

This cruise was chosen because of the 7 day itinerary and at this time of year the temperature would not be too hot. My wife is very asthmatic so the temperature was a very important feature for us. The restaurant service and food were excellent so was the attention we received from all the restaurant and bar staff. Our cabin was kept beautifully clean and tidy by our cabin steward, so far everything was as we expected.. The down side was: terrible vibration from the propellers/engines at night time, we had to cancel three days shore excursions because we were too tired to go on them and had to sleep during the day. We did complain about the noise and were told "What noise" . We did find out from some staff members that technicians where onboard trying to rectify the problem and that there had been a lot of similar complaints, but reception staff still refused to admit there was a problem. The pool area is lovely and we would have enjoyed that if we could find empty seats where we did not have to endure the smoke coming from the smoking area at the pool side. My poor wife was coughing and choking with the smoke in this area which you could smell over a third of the seating area. A closed in area where everyone who smokers can enjoy fellow smokers poisonous fumes should be available. . The air conditioning in our suite was also not working despite our constant requests for this to be rectified it was not repaired There was rudeness from the reception desk when we asked when it would be working!! and to top the lot no water in the cabin to flush toilets or wash hands on the last night.. When it finally came through the taps the next morning it was a dirty brown/yellow colour. We passed on our morning showers and decided to wait till we arrived home later that day. Regent as far as we are concerned do not live up to their hype, they let themselves down by not admitting when there is a problem and encourage their staff to lie to you. The staff at reception areas can be very rude and choose to ignore your complaints over problems which you do not expect to have on a top end luxury cruise line. We will not cruise with Regent again, there are plenty of other excellent cruise lines out there who provide a good quality cruise experience and who listen to passengers with genuine complaints over lack of what should be the usual experience you would expect on a holiday, air conditioning, a good nights sleep, clean water when it finally comes through the taps and reception staff who pay attention to your problems not ignore them and lie to you! We are seasoned cruisers and usually have four cruise holidays a year so Regent you have lost yourselves two passengers who would have booked more cruise holidays with you ! Read Less

I sailed on the Regent Seven Seas Navigator with my wife and 11-yr old son August 14, 2009 for 7 days, Athens (Piraeus) to Istanbul. My previous cruise experiences have been on Seaborn, Crystal and Lindblad/Nat. Geo. (small ships in Galapagos and Baja). I am not particularly picky about things and although I give almost anyone the benefit of the doubt if their heart is in the right place, I do notice things and, if things don't go well, those things stick in my craw. Anyway, the things I noticed (but would never complain about) are towards the end of this review, after "You're OUT!!!). I had, admittedly, somewhat high expectations of Regent, as I had originally chosen a 12-day itinerary on Oceania and my wife and agent 'upsold" me to Regent, as a definitive step-up from Oceania. As the title to this review portends, I was disappointed to the core with many aspects of the cruise that, in my opinion, leave no doubt as to the answer to question where Regent Seven Seas belongs in any "rating" of cruise lines. First, the good. We had a basic room which, on the Navigator, is stunning and huge (even without the generous balcony) relative to anything I have experienced on Seaborn or Crystal in the same general category. 24-hr room service. So, if your idea of a perfect cruise is sitting in the room, reading or watching videos and living off of room service, you've come to the right place. Room service food was reported to be good by my son, who enjoyed it several times. We only had the "fixings" delivered for some caviar we had, all good. Now, the misery. This was to be a designated family-oriented cruise, replete with a kids program in 3 age groups. There were between 50 and 60 kids on the cruise (representing over 10% of the passengers on board). When we inquired after boarding, we were told that the two women who ran the program were "asked to leave the ship" at a prior cruise port. No explanation, no apology, no alternatives, just mystery. Further inquiry yielded no details or explanation. I can say with 100% assurance that if this had happened on Crystal, they would have flown new staff from another location, co-opted crew from other duties or otherwise figured out how to deliver on a promise so essential to the concept of family cruise "vacation" (i.e., mom and dad can have some time together alone) and the number of affected passengers. Not with Regent. Had there not been a ping-pong table on board, the seas would have been littered with parents jumping from the rails. We had the opportunity to dine with some of the senior staff one evening and danced around the subject - but they were all tight-lipped to the end. Unbelievably, we learned a day before disembarking, that the staff asked to leave the ship were in fact rejoining the ship on the return to Athens. Arrgh. Strike one. A zero for failing to deliver an essential part of the cruise, as marketed and promised, and a below zero minus for not figuring out how to otherwise mitigate their abject failure and come up with something, if only a believable story. We signed up, using a not insignificant amount of shipboard credit (several hundred dollars) for a Regent "Signature" excursion in Rhodes. These are the very special, particularly-vetted couple of excursions that an exclusive group within Regent arranges. In our case, it was an "Off-Road" Adventure, renting a jeep and caravanning to many of the interesting sites on Rhodes that most folks wouldn't be able to visit because of the off-road nature of the trip and mobility of being in small vehicles. Although we may have at some point driven through some of the towns in which some of the historic/cultural sites described in the excursion brochure resided (though my GPS did not indicate so), hand over heart I can say that there was nothing, other than the act of renting a jeep that bore any resemblance to what was in the Regent brochure, the basis on which we booked this trip. We started out at "Butterfly Valley", actually a very interesting site in which a certain butterfly species (in fact, a moth), historically comes. Unfortunately, we were hustled in and out so fast, we did not have an opportunity to enjoy the place at any pace, or to take more than a snapshot or two. We were then off for a one hour drive to have a snack/drink, which ended up being at a hunting lodge. After another hour and a half in the car, we ended up in a small village in the mountains overlooking (a ways away) the coastline. Not the place we were supposed to stop, with another large party from a tour bus upstairs, but the food was fine. At this point, I was interested only in the "Ouzo". Then back in the jeeps for about 45 mins. Did I mention that the brochure said we would be off-road most of the time to visit these rare sites, but that we had yet to see anything but pavement. Not for long. For about a sum total of about 90 seconds, we hit a patch of unpaved road under repair and - you guessed it - that was the "off-road" part of the trip. Just before exiting the un-pavement, in one of the most surreal moments of this goat-rodeo, the guide pulled everyone off the road onto the dried weeds at roadside, right next to a bunch of bee hives (imagine the 95 degree heat, sun, and now swarming bees at having been invaded by 9 topless jeeps). Why? To gather everyone's cameras so that he could take a memorable picture for everyone on or in front of their own jeep on their own camera. You think I'm kidding? It was surreal. Put aside for the moment that 2 minutes further down the road was a scenic pull-out with a sweeping panorama of the coast and surrounding Greek isles, this was a scene that Quentin Tarentino would pay money to get the rights to. After the honking of irritated guests drove the guide back into his jeep, we were back in the jeeps for another hour to...the beach. Nothing in the brochure about the beach or swimming. We had not brought bathing suits. No towels provided by Regent for the trip (you would think - even if to save their stateroom towels from being used at the beach off the ship). But there we were at a small Taverna on the beach and the beautiful Med. My son and I went cowboy style and my wife had to suffer with a diet coke and view of the Med. 50 minutes later, we're hustled back in the jeeps for, yes, another 45 min drive back to the jeep rental spot, and then a bus ride back to the ship. Strike Two. No one from Regent had ever vetted this trip. They never gave any explanation (other than the disingenuous letter mentioned below). There is no way imaginable that it could be considered anything other than a slow roast around Rhodes for 8 hrs. Most importantly, we had wasted our only opportunity to see Rhodes on this misrepresented "Signature" excursion, not to mention the several hundred in credit dropped on this. Shameful. Our first stop back on board after chuckling about the comedy of misconception and execution that was our "Signature Rhodes Off-Road Adventure" was to visit the excursion desk to lodge our disappointment and disbelief at what had just befallen us. Lots of "so sorry", but obviously no one there with any answers or ability to do anything. They left a note for the excursion manager. We later met with him, in civil fashion, away from the excursion desk, in relative privacy. He took notes and expressed concern and shock, but clearly had no knowledge. I challenged him to find a single participant on the trip that would sign up again for that trip, rather than have their fingernails pulled one-by-one. He said that he really couldn't do anything, but would send it to "New York". This was Tuesday. We were due to disembark Friday morning 8am in Istanbul. We checked back throughout Wednesday and Thursday and no one had any answers. We had not asked for anything in particular, but clearly were PO'd that we had expended money on an entirely misrepresented trip. Finally, around 8pm on Thursday night, while packing, I went to the excursion desk and said I wouldn't leave until I had some response. I was told that the response from New York had "just come in" - and that Regent was not prepared to do anything. Nothing at all. As if we had just reported something that we had imagined. I was left so incredulous that I simply asked to have it in writing, which they delivered around 9pm that night (I'll try to post this). End of story. Let's contrast Regent's response to the "Off-Road" goat rodeo with our experience a day later after disembarking at our small hotel (the "Blue House Hotel") overlooking the Blue Mosque. My son mentioned to someone at the front desk in passing that the Jacuzzi jet button hadn't worked in the spa tub when he tried. I hadn't even heard of it and, frankly, wouldn't have cared a bit, but when we returned from our day of touring Istanbul, a sincere letter of apology from hotel management for the malfunction and a basket of fresh fruit in our room. Enough said. By the way, we highly recommend the Blue House Hotel, otherwise known as the "Mavi-Ev". Strike Three. Doing anything approaching taking responsibility for a bad experience and a gesture, however modest, to make a cruise customer feel like a guest. How 'bout a little replacement shipboard credit, which given the timing, we would have only been able to use, if at all, on a nice bottle of wine at our last dinner. How 'bout a basket of fruit. How 'bout 10% off a future cruise. Anything..., but nothing? Hmmn. We all differ in how we measure our experiences, but I can say truthfully that in each of our cruises, we absolutely had to personally visit with and thank not less than a half-dozen crew members, to say farewell, exchange contact information, invite them to visit when they're in the San Francisco area and the like. There was not a single person that any of us felt even remotely compelled to hunt down, other than a Kiwi security officer that my son promised to do the Maori Haka dance for. We had a pleasant dinner with him and with a nice young woman whose title led us to believe she would be the perfect person to share our "concerns" about the cruise with, but ended up being more responsible for customs clearance at ports than customer service and, other than expressing surprise at what we had experienced, offered no hope that anything would be done. It was like sharing the story with just another guest. The Maitre D' of the main dining room deserves special mention for patience and keeping that warm smile and wit amidst demanding cruise customers all wanting window tables. No one else remotely came to mind for any of us. Strike 1, Strike 2, Strike 3 - You're OUT!!! My conclusion - a perfect cruise line for someone used to a cattle car mega-ship. If you have been on Seaborn, Crystal, or any cruise line out there that truly puts the guest first and has any understanding as to what that means - run the other way as you will be disappointed on Regent Seven Seas. From the top down, they have no clue what guest/customer service is. It's an institutional problem, not an aberration. Some details - Nice gym, open 24 hrs. But nothing in terms of programs in the dance/stretch area. No staff to run any of the programs from all appearances. I remember a daily schedule of yoga, pilates and other things on Crystal. Zilch on Regent. Carpets and certain other common areas smell "stale". Carpet upgrade or cleaning or paint (anything to cover up the smell) would be worthwhile. I always wonder what "included tips" means for staff. For the first couple of days, I thought the overall attitude of staff was a little harsh. This got better over time, but there has to be a better way of handling this "perk" that still incents the staff to work to their potential. Perhaps a special "tip" shipboard credit that can only be used for that purpose. Wireless internet from the room worked pretty well, though I had to work around VPN blocking. We attended an evening show -which was very well produced. I understand the band/orchestra (professional) had been brought back on a semi-permanent basis and that explained in part the good music quality. Specialty restaurant food was mediocre at best and the menu, uninspired. Main dining room food and service was excellent, as was the wine list. The "house" booze (for which one does not pay extra) was top notch. (Belvedere or the Goose - house; Bombay Sapphire - house; Maker's Mark (for those Manhattans) - house. The house wines at dinner were so interesting, varied and good we rarely ventured into the wine list. The "photo shop" described in literature and even in on-board materials in the room....well, it must have been a sick joke. From what I could tell from visual inspection and asking for several items during the trip, it consisted of a pile of AAA batteries and a couple of memory sticks (which could not be located); literally all in a small plastic basket to the left of the cash register. I was looking for liquid lens cleaner or anything close - fat chance. Don't think that there is even a photo kiosk where you can stick in a memory card and print photos or burn a CD. There was literally nothing. We'd been used to photographers on most cruises - a casualty of cost-cutting on Regent. Food in general - given that we were in Greece and Turkey, I would have expected that at least in one of the restaurants we might see some "local" dishes. It was really odd to have spent 5 days in Greece before boarding the ship and 5 days in Istanbul after disembarking, cultures that are known for their fine cuisine, and not being able to enjoy any of it on the ship. How 'bout a small sampling at dinner of "local" dishes. It's what we've seen on other cruise lines. Golf driving net - hope you're left-handed or the choice is slim. The mat looked like a bad toupee and kids routinely whacked balls off the back of the boat, occasionally off of other guests - an accident waiting to happen. I had to get off the treadmill and run outside to exercise a little adult supervision a couple of times. No crew around, but this brings me back to Strike One, and I've spent enough energy on this diatribe. Overall impression - these folks are in cost-cutting mode and it shows. Answer to the Question: A two-star pretender....but love the cabin. Read Less

This was our first cruise. We chose this because we were told it was a 'luxury" cruise. A 10 day cruise of Mediterranean: Greece, Italy, and a bit of France. First of all Staff: A large number of the staff does not speak English well, we were really shocked by that. And while most are very nice, the restaurant director was a surprisingly rude (his manager was VERY nice), and a couple dealers in the casino were very rude. Food as a whole was mediocre, especially the variety. The Steak restaurant wasn't bad, and the Compass Rose was pretty good, and the buffet on the last night was good. We didn't go to two of our ports due to weather. No really fun fitness classes (spin class one day). I mean, come on! I feel like they cater to the elderly, and while there were a significant amount of folks over the age of 65 onboard, they still need to cater to others under that as well. Don't even get me started on the entertainment. For $25K we expected way more. I honestly can't imagine anyone on the cruise being that impressed to be honest. They should be ashamed of themselves for charging that much, with such mediocrity. Should have done Seabourne Read Less

The itinerary. Also to try Regent. Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed with the food, service, staffing. (Our cabin attendants were wonderful!!) Due to early excursions most of the days, we had room service which was very timely and hot; the one day we had a little time we went to main dining room, Arrived at 0815, had to flag down someone to seat us, waited for a server a while, finally ordered and it took until 0850 to receive our breakfast (excursion met at 0915) Food was not even warm, the dining room was not at all busy. Lunches at buffet were great, hot food, lots of variety, great pizza.......service was not the greatest there either, whether or not it was busy. We needed to catch a server's eye to get beverages many times Main dining room was OK....food needed to be much warmer, I had barely warm scallops, sides were not hot. We did complain and the chef did call us to apologise. Prime 7- nice atmosphere, excellent service food so so. Table for 6, 3 had steaks as ordered 3 did not Chartreuse - all was good Ship was OK Excursions were all outstanding! Our pre-cruise hotel was just OK Hotel Davina Caravel. Biggest problem was no US outlets, my husband uses a CPAP + phones needed charging. Fortunately the hotel store had 1 converter left in the store. That info should have been included in Regent information. I don't remember ever needing to write such a negative review Overall even with our issues, the itinerary and weather made it a wonderful 10 days Read Less

We chose this Regent ship and cruise ,because of previous good experiences on the Voyager.. The ship is well appointed with very spacious and underused Public areas .[easy to find a quiet spot ] .The Library is very nice ! The activities are OK . The gym has nice new machines, however instruction in how to use them is lacking . Ports on this cruise were well chosen . [ Athens to Venice ]We particularly enjoyed Koper [Slovenia] and as well Kotor . Of course Venice is nice ,as usually ,however time there is short unless you stay over [ recommended for 1st time visitors]. Some of the shore excursions were a bit too long ,especially when there is rain . Two excursions during heavy rains [ Kryka ,Lake Bled] were downright treacherous . Some of the paths/steps were very slippery and an accident waiting to happen . Something else should have been figured out for those conditions! Disembarkation was a disaster [4 am ] .There were not enough crew available to give directions and we nearly got lost . Air scheduling on return was also a complete disaster [ Iberian Air ] and the plane was scheduled to be retired in 5 days . [not a good thought for Transatlantic flying ] It took 27 hours for us to get home from Venice ,which is very Unacceptable !! Dining is for the most part ,excellent . Prime is very good ,and had excellent service .Compass rose was outstanding for us, because several servers made it special [ Enrique ,Irfan and Rebecca!]. Lunch in Koper [Lake Bled] was very good , Kotor [Highlights of Montenegro ] lunch and restrooms bad. Chartreuse was not very good and perhaps too over the top on the menu . Entertainment was so- so . The onboard crew entertainment was somewhat amateurish and a tad repetitive . Naki Attaman ,the pianist was outstanding and the Violinist was also good . John Barron [cruise director did an entertaining show himself and has a good voice. Overall maybe 3-4 nights out of 9 or so. Service was mostly good . A glaring deficiency was the frequent lack of Wi Fi . We were sold a cabin with ""free Wi Fi "" ,however if it does not work; then money wasted and there should have been a REFUND!. The tech ,person was not overly friendly ,and the hours for assistance with Internet and computers were severely lacking . There should be two [2] The persons on board for I.T. Overall ,this cruise was not up to our expectations .The whole experience seemed a little "off" compared to prior cruises on the Regent Voyager . We would probably not use Regent ,again . We chose this cruise for Regents reputation for luxury, fine cuisine and included excursions The luxury was lacking in many areas, poor dining service, indifferent desk staff, almost non existent daytime activities, and lack of decent live music were all areas they failed to live up to the hype. The newly refurbished public areas were elegant , as was our large deck 6 cabin, and embarkation and disembarkation were smoothly handled. Our cabin was a delight, elegant decor, large size and a decent bathroom were plus points, but we were unimpressed with the sea themed Occitan toiletries. I was astounded to find no body lotion was provided , a must on ships with the chlorinated water. Cabin service was excellent, as was the prompt room service, but service was indifferent in so many other areas. The ship had a large library with comfortable seating but limited book choice, The main dining room, Compasss Rose had some of the worst service we've experienced, even when only half full. We avoided this restaurant when we could, preferring the Italian themed Sette mare, using the same area as La Veranda. The latter was our lunchtime choice with salads and hot dishes on offer Food was of high quality, but portions were often over large , and vegetables only appeared on request. We were very disappointed to realise that the publicised caviar was remarkably lacking, 3 tiny spoonfuls were all we were offered during the entire cruise. I do not care for meat, but found the " pan fried" this or that boring, greasy and small portioned. Fine dining it was not! The pool area was delightful, but cruising waiters thin on the ground, unlike other luxury lines. There seemed to be few quiet spots, to just read or ocean watch, and avoiding cigarette smoke proved to be a challenge! Daytime activities were virtually non existent, if one was not on an excursion. The so called enrichment activity was a harsh voiced lecturer, talking about the middle eastern empires . The excursions were the highlight of this cruise, with interesting choices on offer, mostly in fairly small groups, which invariably had excellent local guides. We had booked one or two beforehand, and were welcomed to join excursions on the same day, a very pleasant surprise. Several excursions include a break for local foods and wines in pleasant locations and in Venice we were thrilled to ride in a gondola through part of the wonderful Grand Canal , Our one disappointment was Santorini, a lovely spot, but the excursion focused on the barren volcanic rock on the still erupting island mid caldera. It is unlikely we would sail with Regent Seven Seas again. The physical product is good, the ship was elegant, but the poor service in many areas let them down . Food: Absolute non memorable in anyway. The eggs served are classified with a number 3 stamps meaning these are battery cage eggs. Nowadays these eggs are strictly forbidden in the EU but apparently Regent knows her way to get them on-board serving this animal cruelty eggs to her passengers. The above only states the way Regent is looking at food quality, animal welfare and at cutting costs. The overall impression of the food is mediocre at his best. Most items are cheap and tasteless. The selections (especially at breakfast) are poor and the same every day with no change at all. We can’t really think of one thing we ate that was memorable or very good. The best place to eat on the ship is Prime 7 where most of the food is ok to good. For the rest of the ship (with Compass Rose being the worst) the food is cheap, tasteless, non memorable and simple. Complementary wines are also very simple and cheap. To give you an idea. One of the so-called premium wines (the ones that have to be paid for extra) was a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. This “Cloudy Bay” is sold in the supermarket over here for € 6,= per bottle. Regent sell this one for US$ 60, = on-board. It only goes to say what the quality is of the “free” wines served. Poor in every way. Service: Majority of the staff is cheap labour from poor countries. Most of them are very friendly and trying to do their best. Major problem is them only a very few of them are trained for the hotel business and almost all of them miss the proper education to give a real 5 star service. They seem to not know anything about etiquettes or class. On top of that the service is very spotty and extremely disorganised. It’s almost impossible to take a seat at one of the dinning places without having at least 3 but mostly at least 5 people asking you if you want water. Despite telling them you don’t water, within a few seconds the next waiter is asking for water. This will repeat on and on without any exception. We mentioned this to one of the Maître’s and the responded advising that they considered this as good service instead. For us however it has nothing to do with good service however. It’s a clear sign of how disorganised things are and at the end no one really knows what the other one does. It’s a lack of clear and good leadership. Cabin: Just ok. It’s of a proper size but cannot be called a suite in anyway. The cabins seem to be very used and are in need of a refurbishment and proper, deep cleaning. When we arrived the air-conditioning did not work properly. We mentioned this at 15:00 for the first time and after 7 more attempts to have this solved, at 21:30 nothing was solved yet and the temperature was still 24,5 degrees Celsius. We then went to the hotel manager who, after visiting our cabin, stated that nothing was wrong and that this was the normal temperature. He offered us a FAN in the cabin and promised that things would be checked once more the next morning to see if the temperature dropped. This should be the case, as nothing was wrong. The next morning however they checked again and nothing had changed with the cabin still being very hot. Then the head engineer arrived once more and we were told that all of sudden they discovered a major problem in the main unit and that it would take the whole morning to solve the problem. And indeed, after hours without any air-conditioning at all, the system was started up and now the airco was working properly. No excuses were given at all. Despite the promise in their brochure, the bed is NOT European KING size and the promised amenities are not all there. Furthermore the slippers are not cotton (as promised) but synthetic and the abundant flowers shown in the brochure is a poor twig only once on board. Overall: We feel that Regent is not delivering a ultra deluxe experience at all. It’s not coming close to the acclaimed 6 stars at all. It’s not even 5 stars but mostly it’s a trimmed and upgraded version of Princess Cruises coming close to 4 stars at it’s best. For the prices asked this is a real laugh and ridiculous. We had a very good deal at the end, but if you’re about to pay more than € 500,= per night (for 2 people together, so 250, each) you will face, in our opinion, a complete rip off. We are seasoned travellers sailed on all major luxury lines, including Silversea, Crystal, Hapag Lloyd, Azamara, etc and for us Regent preforms far below the standard of all those others.   Read Less

Having done 20+ cruises before, this was a first time trying a luxury level of cruise, at a huge premium. We were expecting to be pampered and have staff attending to our needs at all times ... boy, did they fall down on the job. We did a Celebrity Constellation cruise right after the Regent cruise (back-to-back); both were 12 nights and both in the same part of the world. We did not take Regent's air nor hotel night before the cruise, so the price paid for cruise only can be compared, both with verandas (Concierge Class in Celebrity).Regent cost almost exactly 3x the price. For that, we got a much bigger (and nicer) suite, open bar for standard drinks and shore excursions. What we didn't get was quality or even adequate service, consistent quality food, good wines (only border line acceptable or worse), quality bar drinks (bad mixology), good espresso drinks, good entertainment or a holiday experience. For about $600 on Celebrity, you get a standard drinks package which provides BETTER wines, better mixology and way better espresso drinks. Heck, our all-inclusive Celebrity Xpedition cruise last year in the Galapagos was way more fantastic for service, attention to the guests and even just the fun factor on a very non-luxury cruise ship. Bottom line, we did not get anywhere close to the value we expected paying 3x the price over Celebrity as a baseline comparison. The crew were terrible (worse than any others we've experienced) in understanding English properly/adequately, or even just performing to provide coffee, deliver a menu, pour water, what have you. They all seem to be very busy like bees buzzing but not really serving the customers ... never mind about the wrong orders, or slow orders and missed stuff. After 2 1/2 days, we totally gave up on the main dining room because of poor service and mediocre food and stuck with the 3 specialty restaurants (if we could get a reservation, but at least 1 did not require reservations, Sette Mare, so that was always an option). The senior management tried hard to make up for the poor service and various problems, but they could only do so much. The steakhouse Prime 7 was the best place to eat, with Sette Mare 2nd best. It really bothered me that a wine list could not be had in order to choose some wine, except for the pay premium wines (no problem there to get a wine list). They always pushed the featured wines of the day (1 red and 1 wine). I only drink red wine, and the red was always sub par/border line drinkable. To get anything else, they had to leave the restaurant to get it and of course I had to dream up what else I might want to drink, such as a Malbec, or a Cabernet from such and such a place (maybe), a Pinot Noire perhaps from somewhere else ... but I had to make the suggestions. Their sommeliers are a joke as they are only trained on the wines carried on board, they are not properly trained/experienced sommeliers. This was truly frustrating and upsetting how this worked on a "luxury" cruise ship. Their mixed drinks were also terrible, i.e. poor mixology even for a rum punch or other basic drinks ... especially their mojitos which I tried several times. (When I switched to Celebrity cruise after Regent, it was a relief to get proper mixed drinks and decent wines without paying a premium.) The in-house entertainers (dancers/singers) are young 20 year old amateurs and they perform double duty running events for the cruise director. The in-house aerialists (a man & a women) were quite good but only seen about 3 times during the cruise. The brought-in feature entertainers were much better but only used about half the evenings, otherwise only in-house entertainers or no show at all. The house show band was not that good (passable) - seemed to play as individuals rather than together as one. Generally speaking, the ship seemed like a ghost ship ... where was everybody? Other than dinner time and show time in the theatre, it was hard to find people. And generally, there isn't much to do ... not much on the agenda on board. It is so quiet ... not even music around the pool. If you like to do very little and not see too many people at all, this is the cruise line for you (if you don't mind paying a huge premium for passable food, wine, bar and poor service). TV choices were poor and minimal for English language (pretty much News & sports only). Some of the ship's channels had the same program running non-stop for 12 days (pretty annoying). The TV remotes were rather awkward to use and had to be pointed to a box above and to the right of the TV (rather than at the TV itself). The only good thing here was free in-room movies, of which there was something like 169 choices ... way too many to go through. The TV picture quality on these flat screens was not that good, surprisingly. Room steward was OK but nothing to rave about. Never offered bar setup (eventually I asked for something)nor did he replace used drink/wine glasses. When I called for assistance one evening around 10 pm, the phone system sent a page to whomever was on call, but did not receive any response - how great is that! As a separate issue, my wife got terribly sick after the 1st night's evening meal because they had slipped some apple into the desert even though we told the special meals captain (or whatever he was called) that she had allergy to gluten and apples and he promised to communicate this to the wait staff. When I returned to the restaurant to challenge what they had served her that evening, we deduced that it must have been apple instead of gluten that she consumed ... but with this knowledge that they screwed up, there was no one there to make sure she was alright (no inquiries or anything) nor any attempt to make up for it somehow. She was sick the whole night until early morning and obviously this had a terrible impact on the next day, which was our first port of call (Santorini). We made the best of it without their help. We feel this was a terrible mistake to waste so much money on this "luxury" cruise and highly recommend to stick with other using premium cruise lines such as Celebrity or Azamara and just pay for the drinks and tours you want either a la carte or with an add-on package. Regent is way over priced for an inferior product overall (on many levels). What's good: The suites are fantastic; the ship design is nice; a good size pool; very few children (like 2); spa services; restaurant senior management & senior staff desire to satisfy & serve (to overcome the shortcomings of regular staff); Prime 7 and Sette Mare restaurants What's passable: shore excursions (some good, some not so good), food overall, Signatures restaurant, room steward What's not good: most everything else! ... bar, wine, activities, shows, atmosphere, port disembarkation, restaurant servers, activity staff (the entertainers), shop attendants, bartenders, coffee (especially espresso) Read Less

As a long time SSS member and Radisson cruiser, we have continued our cruising with the Regent product and each time, bringing our expectations and hopes that the experience remains the same despite the corporate change of hands. Our most recent foray was on the Voyager from Athens to Rio. Sadly, that Radisson famous service is no longer available. For the very things that used to make cruising unique on this line and encourage longetivity and loyalty amongst their guests, all have gone by the wayside in favour of the bottom line. A fellow SSS passenger reported to me that the new president Frank DelRio himself gauchely stated to guests that he no longer wanted to world cruisers or long-term travellers, "there was no money to be made off them". In essence, it's a slow destrcution or "Carnivalization" model this company is moving towards, and they are taking no prisoners, and in our opinion going the entirely wrong way about it. Solid shoreside staff who used to be well equipped to deal with the unforseen, or resolving issues pertaining to guest relations have been replaced by managers with no practical business experience and who have instead ridden up the corporate ladder and weild their newfound power with an unqualified sword. One such manager (name eludes us- French guy?)was apparently boarding in Puerto Rico but outright refused to meet with any guests despite a group of us approaching the chief purser. Perhaps he was ill equipped (crew told us he was a former maitred!!) to deal with questions on his and other's decision making that are substantially affecting the cruise experience itself. Consequently, they are allowing all those wonderful and memorable staff you would recall from past cruising who genuinely cared about the company to mass exit, and instead replacing them with crew who will work for less, and be entirely too busy to pay attention to the finer details we had all come to love. Less crew and more work means they aren't happy. We noted a number of the former crew have relocated employers on our last Silverseas cruise, and in conversations with some of the key individuals still onboard, expect to see more of them mass exiting in future with little or nothing to be done in attempting to keep the very folk who made these ships worthwhile. Indeed, a sad state of affairs and points very much to the possibility of unqalified and foolish corporate decision makers. This is the only reasoning as to why they are willing to destroy the very product that set them apart from the rest of the industry. Compass Rose The best this has to offer is the flexibility for it's diners in both menu and seating. The food has certainly gone downwards, and although they do their best to disguise it, in quality it is apparent. Maitre'd Luis was on for part of our segment and is the consummate professional. The sommolier Craig is the finest we've come in contact with and knows his wines inside out. Ordering items that are off the menu still permits for those with discerning tastes, and this is a gesture appreciated in the ever-evolving cruise industry. A good meal, but has lost it's sparkle. Verandah Buffet style, and often destination based, the offerings up here are hit and miss. Certainly kudos go out to the effort in which it takes to serve up a large variety, and it does break the monotony of the other onboard offerings. But expect chewier, cheaper cuts of meat, less exotic fruit and veg, and instead more mass production. When we requested a specific regional wine, we got the impression that we were somehow putting them out, and yet, throughout our lengthy voyage this was the same wine we had requested with nearly every suited meal. No strike against our hard working wine sommolier or waiter, as it was apparent they were not the ones at fault. Evening and Day Entertainment Although the lecturers are still for the most part, top notch, the narration while arriving or going through interesting spots at sea or in ports has been lost, and the captain is the only one who manages to deliver some personality in his announcements. The shows are decent, but dated, but some recognition should be given to the Cruise Director Lorraine who seems to be everywhere at once, and even if out of breath, always professional. Elsa is a living doll and is also full of boundless energy and compassion, and from our observations, along with Elsa really took the solo travelling people under her wing. Ports- no complaints here- we chose this run based on our past visits to the same ports. Our only problem wast that the french tour manager was exteremely difficult to understand in her announcements, and attempts to coral the geusts at times were noteably futile. Onboard Activities There were good cooking classes, excellent crafts instruction and activities with Marsha,, interesting and relevant computer courses up for offer, and a large internet cafe and in-room wireless internet that was although agonizing in it's lack of speed, left one in good hands with the gracious female computer instructor. The gift shops were polished but lacked local and seasonal items, staffed with friendly folk and not too many of them! It always seemed someone onboard could dig up whatever it was a passenger lacked, which is also lost on the larger ships. There is no photo department any longer which is refreshing,although there were times a picture would have been great to have the option to buy. Not having the ability to purchase camera related items like memory sticks, etc was a let down. The manager onboard Englebert seemed to be more of a yes man than a man who got things done. Friends of ours in a gruop onboard had somewhat unpleasant dealings with him and although he had some decorum and professionalism, he clearly had limited or no power to change or adjust the arrangements that had been problematic. His overall impression he gave off was that of padding/bandaging the issues rather than truly working to fix things. All in all, rather ineffective. Debarkation was fairly smooth and the low passenger count definitely makes this a difference of night and day compared to much larger vessels. All in all, if you are expecting the personalized, stand-out treatment of the Radisson days, that is all but lost, along with most of the staff who facilitated that. Decent value but overpriced for the service they are touting that just simply isn't the same. Read Less

We chose Regent primarily because we wanted to try an all-inclusive cruise to see if they are worth the price and Regent got great reviews. Overall, we loved the boat and the crew. Service was generally off the chain good, but I wouldn't spring for a penthouse just to get a butler. Ours was wonderful, but really didn't do much that a good steward wouldn't have done. We just aren't that needy as travelers, but if you are, it might be a good spend. Getting on and off the boat was handled exceptionally well in our view. Not just at embark/disembark, but shore excursions. Literally, hundreds of people were moved smoothly and comfortably every morning. They were even handicapped that most of our ports were tendered, not docked, and the crew made it look easy. Food on the boat was generally good, but not as good as I expected, based on other reviews. I frequently found both fish and steaks over cooked. Other dishes like pasta and risotto leaned toward salty and over seasoned. There were certainly exceptions where fare exceeded all expectations. The French based Chartreuse was our favorite - we ate there twice on the trip and food was properly cooked and seasoned both times. Next, was the main dining Compass Rose, where the chef's specialty menu was usually the best. Especially, good were oxtail soup and herb crusted lamb rack. At the restaurant bottom for us, was the Prime 7 steak house. My medium rare filet was a hockey puck - over done, under seasoned, tough and dry. I do much better at home. The wife's halibut was likewise over and dry. This is not upscale dining. All drinks are included and the bartenders are fantastic! Some of the best bar service we've had anywhere. Drinks were just about perfect. What else? Let's pick nits - this is an "upscale" cruise line. The on board included wi-fi is useless most of the time. Lighting in the bathrooms is far too dim for 50 something eyes. The stateroom temperature is very difficult to control - going quickly from sticky to meat locker. The bottom line is always would you do a Regent cruise again. We talked to lots of Regent repeaters on the trip and we always asked them why Regent? Everyone, said first the all-inclusive concept. One price and you are done and you know that number long before you board. Second, great service is what brings customers back. For us the answer is YES. We will go with Regent again. It's worth the money. However, we stop short of many others who say they won't ever travel with anyone else. Read Less

We were a party of 4 and had cruised on Azamara,Oceania and various other cruise lines.An opportunity presented itself to try Regent so this is our review.The package was booked through Regent with flights with BA from local airport which were stress free to Athens.We booked a GTY de-luxe balcony suite but were upgraded to concierge.We were on Dk.8 FWD.It was noticeable that there was quite a lot of vibration at the aft end of the ship which has been reported in other reviews. The suite was spacious with all the amenities you would expect for this grade.All the crew were polite and looked after you with nothing begin to much trouble to them. We had booked 8 tours at the different ports which are included in the price and all were well organised and were very good. Free wi-fi was available,but if you had difficulty logging on there was a computer man on hand who was excellent in solving your wi-fi problems and made sure you were connected. "Now some of the not so good points". SHOWS: All the artists who came on board were very good,however there was 4 production shows with 3 of them just average and the last one begin very good.The singers were typical cruise artists,but the dancers were very good. FOOD: The food in all the restaurants was very good but the disappointment was the desserts which were bland and not to a standard of other competitors. Cruise started and ended in Athens. The room was large considering it was a cruise.. balcony, sitting area , walk-in closet, shower and tub. Food was delicious- our favorite was the Compass Rose. Most mornings we had room service for breakfast because excursions were early. Everyone of the staff on the ship were very friendly. Loved the three man band that played any song you wanted in the lounge each night. They had other singers, dancers, pianists and full orchestra as well. All were very talented. The shore excursions were great... we only did the half day ones. All of the tour guides were very knowledgeable. Our favorite ports were Malta, Katakolo, Rhodes and Kusadasi. The afternoons we sat by the pool. We met lovely people from all over the U.S. Australia and United Kingdom. It was our first cruise .. my husband was hesitant to go. Now we can’t wait to cruise with regent again. Well worth the cost. Read Less

Regent Explorer October 11 - October 22, 2016 The pre-cruise hotel: The hotel was adequate but nothing that I would classify as “Luxurious”. The rooms, small and basic in design were clean and the baths modern. The Fitness Center was certainly not worth the additional fee of 20 Euro. The Divani Caravel is a tour bus hotel, not the luxurious hotel described in the Regent marketing collateral. The cruise check-in: Transportation to the ship was well organized. The check in process for the cruise was efficient and very straightforward. My cabin was available at 2:30 as I was told it would be upon boarding. In the meantime we enjoyed a beautiful lunch on the deck at La Veranda. The cabin: I booked a Concierge E suite, it is beautifully decorated, large and light, with a spacious closet (huge improvement over the Seven Seas Mariner) and storage to spare! The bath has double sinks and a tub/shower as well as a separate shower. The suite also features an oversized deck. The bed was so comfortable that I hated having to leave it in the morning! The restaurants: Each of the specialty restaurants are beautifully decorated and the main dining room Compass Rose has been retuned with dividers to offer a more private dining experience if desired. Table 93 was our favorite as we were a group of seven. The lighting fixtures, decor, table and glassware are all amazing and very different in each restaurant. The food, the wines, the staff, and the service can be summed up in one word, exceptional! The staff: I commend whoever does the hiring for Regent as the staff for both of the Regent cruises that I have been on has been excellent. It was great to recognize many staff from the Seven Seas Mariner aboard the Explorer. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and eager to make your time aboard a memorable one. This includes the officers, the room stewards/stewardesses, the waitstaff, the Canyon Ranch Spa employees, the Reception and Destination staff and virtually anyone I came in contact with. The spa: The Canyon Ranch spa is quite amazing! Located on Deck 6, both men’s and women's locker rooms open on to a private deck with an infinity pool. The locker rooms each contain an aromatherapy steam room, infrared sauna, a cold room and an experience shower (I am still not sure what that means). I recommend that you book your massage appointments well in advance of departure as they fill up very fast! I can’t recommend Stefan more highly! The gym is very well equipped with band new machines and cardio equipment, however the layout seems to have left a lot of wasted space and a better design could have made available more space for group classes. The culinary school: What fun! Highly recommended! In the class that I attended Executive Chef Kathryn Kelly taught us recipes from the Mediterranean together with wine pairings. These onboard classes prove that learning can be entertaining and FUN! The excursions: I am not an excursion person. My dislike of excursions was re-enforced on the first excursion that I took on Corfu. It was disappointing and no fun being trapped on a bus while listening to a tour guide who felt that even a moment of silence was a total waste! Corfu looked to be beautiful but this excursion to Achilleon Palace spent too much time at the Palace (over rated) and our time in old Corfu was far too short. I only did one more excursion and it was much better. The rating: My experience on the Regent Seven Seas Explorer has been wonderful. I cannot think of a thing that I would change or try to improve upon! If you are considering a cruise on the Regent Seven Seas Explorer you will not be disappointed! I rate it Five Stars and if I could I would rate it Six Stars! Read Less

Regsent have filled this fabulous ship with beautiful art and furnishings.The public area are spectacular.Our embarkation and check-in was quick.We chose a simple Deluxe Veranda Suite which was adequate in size and beautifully furnished with plenty of USB and electrical outlets.Smallish bathroom and good sized balcony.Those less mobile might consider a larger cabin.For us the ship had so much space and peaceful public areas we didn't have need for more elaborate cabin accommodation.By the way the Regent 'marshmallow' like beds are fabulous,and our cabin was always made up promptly and expertly. The everyday Compass Rose was our favourite restaurant which offered a wide and varied menu of our favourites including great steaks,lobster,Dover Sole etc.Speciality restaurants Chartreuse,Pacific Rim and Prime 7 all performed well for us but only as a change from the wonderful Compass Rose.Wines,spirits and great cocktails were plentiful and of high quality.Staff throughout our stay were fabulous.We had absolutely none of the problems that were mentioned in earlier reviews.Even our free internet always worked perfectly well all over the ship.But it's worth taking time to understand it's workings when you first log on.No streaming YouTube etc. Sun decks and pool area were immaculately setup with quality sun beds and great bar service.There were plenty of spare sun beds even at the busiest time during our day at sea! Tendering etc were perfectly executed.However I don't think Zadar is an appropriate destination for 5/6 Star guest in October for many many reasons,weather excluded. This is an expensive holiday,you are paying for space on a ship,as well as attention and an elegant ambiance.Enjoy. Read Less

We took a 10 day Regent Mariner cruise from Athens August 28 to Barcelona Sept. 6. First time on Regent and I have nothing but good things to say about this cruise line and this ship in particular. I chose this line because it only had 700 passengers (do not believe it was completely full)alcohol , all excursions were included, all inclusive (food and beverages included) and no tipping necessary (unless you wanted to do it). We were upgraded to 1052 by the cruise line and the veranda suite was wonderful. Plenty of room for everything to be unpacked and luggage stored away. The steward and stewardess always took care of any needs or requests and had our room in ship shape condition when we returned from excursions/or after dinner. We celebrated a big anniversary while on board and came back to dinner to find our room had been decorated with rose petals, a sign and balloons decorating our suite. My husband asked if they could bring him a special beer and all of a sudden a 6 pack was in our room ready for the mini refrigerator (it was stocked everyday with soft drinks, beer, and water. Food service is wonderful. We enjoyed their breakfast o the back of the ship and enjoyed the views while eating. They have 2 specialty dinner venus (make reservations ASAP) as they do fill up fast and only allow 1 reservation per venue. We really enjoyed the 2 regular dining rooms that were available. No reservations required and show up when you want to have dinner. Great service by all the personnel who seemed to be well trained in food service.The menus varies each evening and offered a large variety of food choices. We were treated first class. I definitely would consider taking this ship again and was reasonably surprised by everything about this ship. We met 2 other couples during an excursion and enjoyed many laughs and great dinners with them on the cruise. There also seemed to be repeat customers on this ship. That to me is a great testimony to this cruise line. I have one complaint: they could use more washer/dryers on the ship as many times there were people waiting to use these amenities (another nice touch which we were able to use). Read Less

This was the best cruise I've ever taken, and I didn't find anything unexpected to complain about. The May weather was excellent. The only rain was while I was indoors on embarkation night and at the airport after debarkation. The waters were extremely calm. There were so many shore excursions to choose from that I feel I could take the same cruise again, choose different excursions, and have an almost completely different vacation. Almost all the local tour guides were excellent. There were almost never any lines and it was quieter than my expectations. There were always loungers available at the pool. The four shows which featured all the dancers were excellent. The food and restaurants were excellent. The only problems I had were with the pool grill, room service, and the omelet station were not unexpected and I believe had to do with language differences and having to serve so many people. I was also surprised that Coffee Connection had no chai tea since it is so popular. The most well-attended activities were the trivia contests. Activity points were given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners and could be redeemed for nicer prizes than any other cruise I have been on. I was disappointed that there were no lectures about the ports even though I had read a lecturer had previously been selected. The boutique was expensive, but I did find enough there to use up my onboard credit. The staff was extremely polite and almost unnecessarily apologetic at times. There passengers were just as courteous as the staff. Regent made my air arrangements and the seats and timing were good, flying Austrian there and Lufthansa back. I would estimate the average age of passengers to be 55-75, although there were a larger number of people than I expected in their 20's. As for children, I noticed only 1 preschooler and 2 teens. The gym and laundry facilities were good, and I noticed you could finish your business there even after their closing hours. It would be hard to switch to another cruise line after this experience. So will I go again? Maybe. I do like to do different kinds of vacations and it was more expensive than I am used to for vacations. But I did get what I paid for on this vacation. Read Less

We have sailed on the Mariner before, but the atmosphere on this cruise ( Empires of Antiquity) seemed to be more relaxed and organized. Perhaps it was due to Captain Felice Patruno and Cruise Director, Lorraine Weimerskirch. We've been sailing on the Seven Seas ships since 1992 and this is the first cruise with Captain Patruno and Lorraine. The crew seemed to be very happy with their jobs and to be on the Mariner. The included wines were some of the best that we have had on a cruise ship. Chef Kelly Osborne came around each evening to ensure that guests were happy with their meals. Embarkation and Disembarkation were a breeze. Tours were well planned and organized in that you were given a time to meet in the Constellation Theater where you turned in your tour ticket and were given a bus ticket and waited for your number to be called. There was never a mass push or crowd in the theater. We had cabin 934 that was mid ship. Ports included Athens, Santorini, Aghios Nikolaos on Crete, Haifa, Ashdod (overnight), Limassol, Cyprus, Antalya, Turkey, Rhodes, Ephesus, and Istanbul. While some of the ports were repeats for us, there was enough new ports. For example, Santorini was a repeat, but the archaeological site of Akrotiri has re-opened and should not be missed as it dates back to the Minoan period. On Crete (Aghios Nikolaos (new), we visited the Palace of Knossos. While the site could have been interesting, there were just too many people (cruise ships in) that one couldn't move or the lines to see something were horribly long while standing in the hot sun. To view this site, one should go in the off season for cruise ships. Jerusalem (Haifa) was a repeat for us, but a visit to Zippori National Park (well worth it) and the Golan Heights was new. From (Jerusalem) Ashdod, we visited the Old City (repeat) and nothing new there, but if you haven't visited the Old City, one should do so. At the end of this tour though, we stopped at a shop that was a total rip off so no one bought anything. An example, the shop owner talked to us and showed us some of the items that he had available for sale at a discount. The Ahava products he said were 50% off. I like Ahava products and took a look. At 50% off, a serum was full retail price! Some discount!!!!! Another tour from Ashdod took us to Caesarea National Park that has the ruins from the city that Herod designed and developed that shouldn't be missed as the site is well preserved and beautiful right on the sea where one could take a quick dip during the brief free time (extra cost for this) as there is a changing area at the site. As part of the tour, we drove through Tel Aviv that is nothing special and stopped in Jaffa for lunch at an Arabic restaurant that could have been good except for the packed in tables that had no elbow room and the rip off for a beer ($6) or glass of wine $8. The cost was not disclosed until they came around to collect. Limasosol, Cyprus (repeat) - Pafos - New to us was a visit to the Tombs of the Kings (not really) that were very interesting in that the tombs were those of wealthy families that were underground and as large as some homes and as palatial. From Pafos we continued on to the House of Dionysis to view the mosaics that was a repeat for us. So much more has been excavated since our last visit that we were very happy that we chose this tour. Antalya, Turkey (repeat) -Perge & Aspendos - Our tour took us to the ancient ruins of Perge (new to us). One can view the ruins of the Hippedrome and the city that has been beautifully excavated and work is continuing. At the site, one can visit the bath house and see the remains of marble, mosaics, and the plumbing and heating systems. It's really hard to imagine how construction of these old cities were completed without heavy equipment. The theater of Aspendos that we had visited on a previous trip to Antalya is even more impressive than our last visit. Rhodes (repeat) - touristy and nothing new here. We repeated a tour of the Grand Master's Palace. One should note that on Rhodes public toilets are almost non existent and if you find one, they are Eastern style, you need your own toilet paper, and a clothes pin for your nose. Ephesus (repeat) and the Terrace Houses (new to us) - Wow! It's definitely worth a visit to the Terrace Houses and to see the discoveries, how they are putting the pieces of the puzzle together, the sheer size of some of the homes, and the frescoes! Well done! On this visit too we were able to visit the ancient toilets and the inside of the library. Istanbul - Prior to the cruise we spent 4 days in Istanbul at the Millennium Suites (highly recommend) in the Sultanahmet district and walking distance to the Topkapki Palace, Hagia Sofia, and the Blue Mosque that's always a pleasure to see before flying over to Athens (King George Palace - highly recommend) for a few days before joining the ship. Restaurants to try in the Sultanahmet area of Istanbul are Magnaura Café restaurant that is across the street from the Millennium Suites and the Albura Kathisma Café (many thanks to Dremehmet, our waiter, for an enjoyable evening) that is just up the street. At Albura, be sure to ask to view the hidden Palace. If you want a food factory dining experience, rather than a quiet meal, try Develi Restaurant in the Samatya district. This restaurant can serve 700 meals at a time, service is rude, but the food is very, very good. Restaurants to try in Athens are Strofi and Dionysos that have outside dining with magnificent views of the Acropolis. While in Athens we stayed at the King George Palace. Check Trip Advisor for reviews of the above restaurants and hotels. We chose the ship's tour and transfer to the Istanbul airport for $149 each that was well worth it as Regent helped us through security and with the luggage. At the Istanbul airport one goes through security first with your luggage. then you go to drop off your luggage and get your boarding pass. Then you go through security again! We're not critical and the entertainment. On this cruise it was all, in our opinion, very good and thankfully no jugglers or magicians.   Read Less

We are in our late-40's and have travelled extensively to a number of 5-star destinations in North America and the Caribbean - we have high standards for our vacations! This was only our 2nd cruise and we were a bit nervous because our first cruise experience (Royal Caribbean) was only mediocre. Instead, our 10-day "Aegean Allure" cruise aboard the Mariner was totally above and beyond all of our expectations. On-board, the attention to detail and excellence was almost mind-numbing. The food was delicious, perfectly-presented and plentiful - at first we were a bit concerned about having only 2 dinners at the reservation restaurants (Steakhouse and French) but the food/service in the 2 non-reservation restaurants, especially the main Compass Rose, was so excellent that it totally didn't matter!). Drinks were as advertised (all-inclusive and plentiful: many different premium beers from around the world available and all top-shelf liquor - I asked for a bottle of Grey Goose to be delivered to our suite and it was there an hour later). Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed - the walk-in closet was awesome. Tons of space throughout the ship - never felt crowded. Theatre and casino provided great entertainment opportunities. Off the ship, the ports we visited were unbelievable - couldn't have asked for a better itinerary. We did only 2 of the Regent Choice excursions (where you pay extra) and 7 of the free/included ones - all of the trips were extremely well-organized and staged in order to minimize time in line-ups etc. Our guides were obviously elite ones with tremendous knowledge and passion. We also never had to stand in line at any of the sites - our guides just wisked us to the front of the lines! Anyone who is critical of this ship and Regent either has impossibly high standards or has an axe to grind. This is true 6-star cruising and worth every penny of the cost! Read Less

This was our 18th cruise and was everything and more than we expected. Those who have had bad comments about the Mariner in other reviews should be ashamed of themselves. We sailed on The Mariner on July 8 on a 10 day cruise (Aegean Allure), Athens to Istanbul. This was our first so-called luxury cruise. The ship was wonderful even though it was much smaller than the mega-ships, there was more than enough deck space, public areas, bars, restaurants, without the crowds and waiting lines on bigger ships. Never a wait on buffets or sit-down restaurants. The Prime 7 Steakhouse and Signatures restaurants were as good as any 5-Star restaurant in the world and the Compass Rose and Sette Marie were also excellent. The service throughout the ship by all staff was tremendous. Twice during the cruise we ordered bottles of vodka and it was delivered to our cabin completely gratis. The cabin was spacious with a walk in closet and large bathroom with ample sitting areas. The balcony was large enough to have dinner served, course by course, on three of the evenings that we chosee not to go to one of the restaurants. Service was prompt and the food was delicious. The free tours were on time and well organized and meaningful. Even though the price seemed high, when compared to non all inclusive cruise, the overall price was well worth it. You get so much more in comparison, that the extra price for everything included comes out cheaper. Hats off to Regent Seven Seas for being "The Best of The Best" at sea! Read Less

I booked this cruise because of a conference onboard and also wanted to see what 6 star cruise experience is like. The chance to visit the Black Sea was also an attraction. I added the business class upgrade to Athens and from Istanbul because of the long flight from the west coast of North America. It was well worth the $999 each way. They flew us there on KLM and back on Delta. We were met at Athens airport by RSSC representative and a dozen of us were sent by bus to the Divani Caravel Hotel. They had a hospitality desk at the hotel that handled our questions. Arrangements to take us to the ship the next day was very smooth. Check-in was very efficient as their staff handled one bus at a time and the buses arrived at staggered times. We were treated to a buffet lunch with white table cloth once onboard since the suites were not ready until 2:30 p.m. We booked a guaranteed Suite F but was "upgraded" to Concierge Suite D on Deck 10. The suite was the same size as a mini-suite on larger ships but the layout was very functional. There was a walk=in closet and the bathroom was good size. Even though there was no bathtub, the shower was quite large and the shape of the bathroom made everything very convenient. The bed was an European King size bed that had a plush pillow top. The mini-bar was stocked with water, soda and beer (no extra charge). Balcony was fair size with two bamboo chairs and an ottoman. Cabin service was good as expected. I experienced neck and back pain for the first three nights and figured that it was because the bed was too soft. The cabin stewards managed to firm up the bed when I mentioned the problem and the pain went away.Now about the "upgrade". According to RSSC, the cabin upgrade only included the items in the cabin, so the in-room coffee-maker and binoculars were not removed. However, items that would cost them such as 30 minutes of internet, 15 minutes of phone call, 10% off premium wines were not included. In most other cruise lines, when there was a cabin upgrade, the passenger would get all of the benefits of the upgraded cabin. The food service was one of the selling points of the Mariner. I was impressed with the food service overall but there were minor exceptions. Each passenger was able to pre-book one night at Prime 7 (steak house) and Signatures (French restaurant). I managed to book an extra night at Signatures once I was onboard. I spent the first night at Sette Mari, the Italian restaurant on Deck 11. It was a buffet appetizer setup with pasta and main course prepared to order. We were fortunately to be served by two Italian waiters and they made the experience very authentic. I ordered a bottle of Italian wine from the premium wine list as it was good value compared to home. Compass Rose was their main dining room with no reservation needed. It opened at 6:30 p.m. and there was always room. Food was also very well prepared and presented. I spent two nights at Signatures and tried the various dishes. All dishes were well prepared and service was excellent. The only minor glitch was the food at Prime 7. I ordered a prime rib and my wife ordered a fillet mignon. The meat was not tender at all but the preparation was fine. Wines were included and they had a good selection of each varietal of white and red each night. These would be good valued wines that was appropriate for dinner. I did ordered a few more times from the premium wine list as there were some good values. Some excursions were included and I did not pay extra for the special ones. They were all well-organized and the local tour operators were all quite good. The ship would hand out bottled water and umbrellas before each tour. Besides those mentioned the Port Reviews, we also visited Sochi (Russia), Sevastopol (Ukraine), Constanta (Romania) and Nessebur (Bulgaria).The entertainment was good with three production shows (six dancers, two singers, pair of ballroom dancing champions, pair of specialty dancers and a eight piece orchestra). There were also a guest comedian and a pair of guest entertainers. There was always room in the Constellation Theater. That brings me to the atmosphere on the ship. There were 700 guests on the ship but it felt very quiet. On the sail-away party on deck, there was a band playing for less than 100 guests. I was wondering where everyone was. There was no line-up at the breakfast and lunch buffet. One could always find a table to sit. The lounges were quiet most of the time. The casino was mostly empty whenever I looked in. The boutique had limited selection of merchandize. There was no photographer onboard. I met a lot of new friends on the cruise and a lot of them were repeat clients of RSSC. In fact, half of the guests were returning clients. Fellow guests were always courteous and warm. Those who had 7 to 11 RSSC cruises under their belts gave me a lot of helpful hints. This was definitely a cruise for those who like a more serene type cruising, no crowd, no hurries and little noise. Disembarkation was breeze. We went to the Constellation Theater at the appointed time and were sent off the boat right the way after they checked off our names. The cruise fare also included transfers to the airport and we were taken to the airline check-in counter by a RSSC representative. The RSSC claim about all-inclusive fare was delivered. They gave each passenger a $100 shipboard credit to be applied against the cost of the Turkish visa needed to leave Istanbul by air. So I did not pay extra except for the premium wines that I ordered and the internet usage. Read Less

First let me begin by saying that this was our honeymoon and we could not have asked for a more perfect, special trip than sailing with Regent for celebrating our marriage. We have cruised before, but this was our first time sailing with Regent. We were on the 10 day Mediterranean sampler from Athens to Barcelona. I will try to keep this as organized as possible while still hitting all of the high points, although I am afraid it will be quite long so bear with me: Pre Cruise Hotel: We stayed at the Divani Caravel in Athens. It was not a 5 star hotel, as advertised, but was adequate for our needs as we were not in the room all that much. I used the fitness center in the morning and was charged 12 euros. In addition, I asked if that fee was per room so that my husband could also go, but was told that it was per person. I thought that this was extremely excessive. Regent provided breakfast free of charge in the hotel's main dining room which was lovely. Embarkation: We boarded in Athens just past noon. Everything went very smoothly and we were greeted with champagne and told our rooms would be ready around 3pm so we headed to La Veranda for lunch. For the rest of the afternoon, we read on the pool deck in the very comfortable lounge chairs. Our rooms were ready at 2:30 so we headed there to un-pack. Our Suite: We were in room 850 in the standard Deluxe suite. We were pleasantly surprised at how much room there was, especially the bathroom and closet. I loved the bathrobes, as I had forgotten mine at home, and thought they were very comfortable. Upon arrival, there were 2 chilled glasses of champagne and a wonderful tiramisu wishing us a "Happy Honeymoon," which I thought was a nice touch. There was also fresh fruit and flowers, as well as the diet tonic water and bottle of Grey Goose that I had pre-requested. The balcony was fantastic and adequately spacious; we enjoyed it most evenings and mornings. We had one of the suites with the shower and tub—I understand most on the Mariner now have shower only. My husband is about 6'3 and his showers were cramped to say the least so next time we will request a suite with the standing shower. Our steward, Carlo, was fantastic and was always quick to deliver anything we requested. For instance, I asked if there was any Sprite Zero on board and he brought a whole six pack within the hour. Also, we had a standing reservation for a bottle of white wine, shrimp cocktail and a cheese plate each afternoon, which was delivered there like clockwork. Halfway through the trip, we received another "Happy Honeymoon" treat which was the same as the first but we had no complaints! Excursions: I can't comment on this much, as we only took two. The first was to Ephesus, which was ok, but I will be the first to tell you that I cannot stand guided group tours so I eventually wondered off on my own. Secondly, we took the boat excursion to Positano from Amalfi. We really enjoyed this especially the boat ride approaching Positano by sea—the views were amazing and I believe that Positano was my favorite stop. Once the boat docked, we were allowed 1 ½ hours of free time, which I felt was much too limited and I was disappointed at not having more time there. We did take advantage of all of Regent's transportation to the cities. We took the Roma Express excursion to Rome, which dropped us off near St. Peter's which worked out so well to do the Vatican right off the bat. We also took the coach ride into Florence which dropped us off in the middle of the city and we wandered all day and then were picked up in the same place. We were really impressed with these transportation options through Regent since some of the destinations were quite far away and they still allowed us to travel there safely and efficiently but also explore on our own. Dining: First let me say that we thought the food was fantastic. We had room service for breakfast almost every morning and it was almost always delivered on time (always at the beginning of the time slot) and was hot and well prepared. Only mishap was the salt/pepper were forgotten three or four times, as well as some various other items from time to time but nothing major. We also enjoyed breakfast in La Veranda, especially the made to order egg station and fresh fruit! We ate in Prime 7 twice and it was fabulous both times. The first we just kind of wandered in on our way into Compass Rose and found that we could get a table for 2—it was a wonderful surprise evening and the food was delicious!! I am almost ashamed to admit that we ordered several appetizers and sides, as well as a surf and turf for each of us...dessert too! We went back a second time for our reservation and it was just as fabulous and we over-indulged just as much as the first time. We really liked Signatures, although the portions were very small. We thought the menu was very diverse and a nice change from everyday fare. We ordered escargot and frog leg risotto, both which were outstanding and the veal and lamb for entrees—delicious! The crème brulee was to die for! We really thought that Signatures was more of a one-stop place so we did not attempt to go again, although it was fabulous. We ate most other meals in Compass Rose and always found something to our liking. We thought the service in CR was just as good in Prime 7 or Signatures every night and we never waited long for food or service. I really liked the Canyon Ranch menu, especially on nights that I was feeling a little guilty about over-indulging—I very much appreciated that they had options for those who were trying to cut back or just eat a little healthier. We had the buffet at La Veranda one night and I was not impressed. It just had too much of a mass food approach and the service was frenzied and disorderly. However, we made the best of it and were able to find a few selections that we both liked. We ordered from CR one night for room service, as we were just staying in. It was delivered course by course, all just as hot and well-prepared as could be found in the dining room. We frequented the Coffee Connection and the cappuccinos and cookies were lovely—just what we needed after a long day in port! They had a BBQ the second to last night aboard and it was fantastic. The food was outstanding, even though there was so much you could not even attempt to try it all! The wine was almost always to our liking, but if we ever found it unsatisfactory, we asked for something different and it was always provided. The only thing I wish that Regent would implement is a sushi bar, or at least have it regularly at one or more of the restaurants—we absolutely love sushi and found only a one generic roll on the buffet at the farewell BBQ. Entertainment: We did not attend too many shows, but we did go to Mariner du Soleil and it was fantastic! The performers and acrobats were noticeably of a very high caliber and we were very impressed. We also went to the farewell show in which the crew gets to perform and we were very impressed and it was nice that the crew got to have a little fun and be shown some much deserved appreciation by us and fellow guests. We were in the casino most nights and found it very lively and entertaining—always a competitive craps or blackjack table! We actually came out ahead! Most of the lounges were quite dead after dinner, but that is probably to be expected on such a port intensive cruise. They had a few wine tastings on board which were well attended and had very good tasting options. All in all we were so impressed with Regent and are now spoiled for life! Background Info: My wife and I have been on 7 cruises in past 5 years. We now clearly prefer Regent and this cruise helped reaffirm this opinion. It was a 12 day cruise from Athens to Istanbul and originally included two days in Egypt. They were replaced with an extra day in Israel and a stop at a wonderful port in Crete called Aghios Nikolaos. I assume many passengers cancelled when Egypt was eliminated from cruise, but we thought the adjustments were great and it triggered a last minute upgrade offer, which we took, moving from a Penthouse A to a GranMariner Suite - a once in a life time experience for us. And it was awesome to have a room with 900 sq feet and windows looking out the front of the ship and a balcony on the side. Hotel Info: We used Regent for our fabulous hotels in Athens and Istanbul, but our first night in Athens, there were dangerous demonstrations directly in front of the Gran Bretagne Hotel. It was a disappointment to only spend one night, but Regent arranged for us to eventually spend the night in a Sofitel Hotel at the airport - executive level. Worked out well and we checked into our hotel at 9AM the next morning. Service and room were great and at dinner we had a beautiful view of the Acroplis and Parthenon. Breath-taking. Our hotel in Istanbul - Ciragan Palace Kempenski exceeded all our expectations from the moment we entered the hotel. The hotel is elegant and overlooks the Bosphorous, so when we laid out at the superb pool, the view was just great. Food, service, room, location, view and ambiance were 1st class - but so was price!! Activities and Entertainment: We always enjoyed the evening shows when the Regent dance team and orchestra performed. The individual performers were not so good. We did not participate in many activities except a reception for Seven Seas Members that we enjoyed. Also saw a fun movie out by the pool one night. We used the spa and gym a lot and walked around Deck 12 mornings when we were free. Also, we were fortunate to share a dinner with the talented Cruise Director Paul Reynolds. The poolside Barbecue dinner and entertainment night was also well done. Service: We had an excellent butler and room steward who provided first class service, including coffee in our room every morning and canapEs must afternoon. Also took care of laundry and helped with ironing twice. Service at Reception and Destinations was always prompt and courteous Ports and Shore Excursions: We really enjoyed our 4 days in Israel. Incredible. Walking where so many biblical events occurred was great. Sea of Galilee was wonderful just to look at. Jerusalem and Bethlehem were very crowded, but we expected that. We enjoyed every port. We were pleasantly surprised with Antalya and Crete and really marveled at Ephesus Travel to Athens: We booked thru Regent and it included a 7 hour layover in Newark (that became 10 hours because of plane maintenance. Direct flight to Athens was great on Continental Air. Airport transfer/Regent pick up went well. Stateroom 1100: This was awesome. Like a good sized apartment! Everything we needed including an I-Pad. It was a great location too . Dining: We ate in the Compass Rose most nights and it was just great. Good food and wine and wonderful service. Always got a tablefor two. Had two evenings at Prime 7 and 1 night at Signatures. Really enjoyed them, but Compass Rose for us was as good or better. The Verandah was very enjoyable and tasty for informal meals like breakfast and lunch. Opted not to have a meal in our room. Disembarkation: Went very smoothly with a brief tour of Istanbul and then a wonderful check in experience at hotel. Mariner handled disembarkation well - just sad to leave. Our return flights thru Regent took us from Istanbul to Paris to Detrait with Air France. Very nice experience Summary: Another wonderful memory from Regent and we booked another cruise in late November on Mariner to Latin America. Read Less

Flight Arrangements I am beginning this trip report long before the trip as this has been the hardest trip to arrange so far. The trip is basically a cruise on the Regent Voyager from Athens to Dubai with a few days in Athens before and one long day in Dubai at the end. The problem with the trip was arranging the air travel to the ship and then home after the cruise. The original plan was to fly first class over and back. The trip from DFW to ATH was to be with BA from DFW to LHR then LHR to ATH. The return was to be with Emirates from DXB to JFK, then JFK to DFW with AA. I had the seats arranged, but not paid for through my travel agent. The first problem occurred when EK decided to withdraw the A380 from the DXB to JFK route. Well that was the whole point to taking that route as it was a chance to fly on an A380. Plan two was an EK 777 from DXB to IAH, then CO from IAH to DFW. That plan lasted for a while until the next problem or in this case opportunity occurred. In May BA decided to have a two for one Club World sale. I calculated the savings at $16,000 over the F fares. I decided for $16,000 I could indeed fly in business class. The routing would now be DFW to LHR and LHR to ATH outbound then DXB to LHR and LHR to DFW back home. Outbound was still all BA. However, I found that EK runs an A380 from DXB to LHR. The arrival time would mean a stay overnight in London as a connection to the LHR to DFW flight with BA would not be possible on the same day. Next problem. The original return date was October 28. However, changes at work pushed the date to October 25. Of course this would prompt a date change for the return leg of LHR to DFW. Next problem. I kept looking at the cost to upgrade the TATL flights back to first. The flight from LHR to DFW is always a 777 with all classes except this one day. On the 25th of October the highest class is Club World. Well so much for going First the entire way. Besides the LHR to ATH segment was always only Club Europe as that is all they offer. So I decide to just make the entire trip in business after all. Next problem. With these plans in mind the travel agent informs me that the Club World fare from DXB to LHR is higher than the First fare. What? Then I find that BA and American Express have made an agreement to allow one for one Membership Points to miles transfers. Hum, I have 138,000 points. I can use these to upgrade the back and forth flight on the LHR DFW segments. Next problem. The American Express web site does not list BA as an airline to which such a transfer can be made. It seems this will be implemented some time before the end of the year. End of the year? I need it now. So now what? Back to CW over, CE down to ATH, F back to LHR from DXB, and CW on the TATL back to DFW. I am getting so confused. Even worse this is creating havoc with my OCD. I do like everything neatly organized and balanced. This is definitely not. Next problem. After arranging everything else the only thing left to was to call BA to change the date of the DFW to LHR segment. On doing so they inform me that in addition to a $500 change fee per ticket I must pay the fare difference between the 2 for 1 price and the current ticket price. What? I could not see this anywhere on the rules for this promotion I printed in May. Next problem. I decide to argue with BA one more time. Of course I got nowhere. However I did get a clear explanation of the problem and the only two solutions. Solution one as detailed above is to change now and pay the fare difference. This is because we are within some 42 advance purchase window. At a cost of $6,000 something dollars that is not an option. However, for reasons unclear to me if we take the first flight on the ticket, the DFW to LHR segment, then once again we can magically change the date of the return flight for just the change fee of $500 per person. As at this point as I do not entirely trust BA on this I had the TA purchase a discounted business class ticket for each of us on an AA two class flight on a 767 just in case. I will just cancel these tickets at a small cost if I can work out things with BA. Next problem. Actually in this case it is another opportunity. One I was quick to take advantage of. Every few days I had been logging into ba.com to try some new scheme to do two things. First, change the return flight to the 25th without paying the fare difference now as opposed to doing this in London. Second, to upgrade the DFW to LHR segment in some way other than paying 8,600 something dollars per person. Today I was going to explore another way to buy BA miles to give me enough to upgrade. To my great surprise on going to Manage My Booking today up pops an offer to upgrade the DFW to LHR segment to First for $649 per person. $649? I can do that. Of course I click on the link to do this as it is a ba.com only offer to have the system say, sorry you cannot do this online, call reservations. So you cannot take advantage of an online only offer online. Hum, plan two, call BA. The nice gentleman on the other end says "I do not know. Let me consult a supervisor." Many minutes later back he comes to say, just hold on we are checking. More minutes go by then back he comes to say what credit card should this be charged to? Seconds pass, then he says you are all set. I am thinking great, but I must have seats 1E and 1F as Expert Flyer only shows 1E, 1F, 2E, and 2F available with 1A and 1K being blocked. Expert Flyer also shows F7 which makes no sense with that seat count. I ask to select the seats now over the phone as this is F. He says no you can only change the seats at check in. But you can see what seats have been assigned online now. I think, fine, let's go back online where I bet I can change seats. Sure enough we are in 1E and 1F, which I change to 2E and 2F. Within minutes a flurry of email messages arrive confirming all of these changes. All that is left is to see if this really happens on flight day. With the H1N1 flu panic and so forth, I have my doubts. I will report back. DFW to LHR Well, we're off. I still do not have the return flight arranged, but we did make it to ATH through LHR. The details are as follows. The car service driver picked us up at 2 for a 5:35 pm flight from DFW Terminal D to LHR T5. I had advised him to bring the large vehicle as we ended up with eight pieces of luggage. Yes, eight. Four large bags, two carryon size bags, a combination messenger bag backpack, and a purse size bag for the leftovers. Somehow I think this is going to be a trend in packing for these trips. At Terminal D we made a stop at the BA desk to see if the bags could be checked through to ATH as the tickets from DFW to LHR, then LHR to ATH were on separate records. Indeed they could be. After checking the bags we were invited to wait in the BA contract lounge in Terminal D. I had planned to wait in the Admirals Club. I decided I would be too nervous not being able to watch the departures board if we went to the Admirals Club. The BA lounge area is shared by several airlines. Each one has their own section. In the main part of the BA lounge there is a luggage drop, snacks and drinks, a TV area, tables, and chairs of various types. There is separate First Class section that is basically the same, except for less food. It is behind a door. Seems a little silly, but I have to admit I stayed in there rather than in the larger room. The flight boarded on time. They called the First and Business class passengers first. The FA greeted Mrs. Paint Horse and I at the door. A colleague of his directed us to the seats in the middle of the middle row. Once we were in our seats a predeparture drink was offered. For Mrs Paint Horse and I this was champagne. Being a philistine I did not ask the type. It was however very smooth. The amenity kit and pajamas were handed out while everyone else boarded. As this is a feed them, then put them to sleep flight no time was wasted. The crew on this flight was efficient and business like. They were just friendly enough to make the flight a pleasant experience. The only problem I noticed was the CSD did not introduce himself to anyone despite spending most of his time in the F section. He was an older man who should have known better. Dinner was quite good for airline food. Dinner service was paced just right. The result being dinner was not hurried, but was provided quickly enough to allow everyone to maximize sleep time. This being our first time over the Atlantic Mrs Paint Horse and I decided to use the change your clocks and your mind to the time it is at the end of the flight after boarding method. This meant we were eating dinner at 11:30 at night then going to bed. As this is not usual for us it worked quite well. We did change into the pajamas before dinner in case of spills, as I am quite prone to this. All that was left before going to sleep was to clean up. As we did so the seats was converted to beds. I found the bed on this old style F seat to be very comfortable. The only thing I did not like was the lack of width on the inside. Despite the bed I did not sleep well. It seems I do not sleep well on aircraft whether sitting up or lying down. About an hour before landing breakfast was served. Not knowing how much trouble we would have getting through LHR we went ahead and ate on the aircraft. Once again for aircraft food is was fine. On arrival at LHR on time we taxied to a remote stand. On disembarking it was onto the buses. I do not like this method, but I must say it was not as bad as I expected. On leaving the bus navigating for the first time through LHR was not as bad as I expected either. On leaving the bus we went up an escalator of course. This is LHR after all. This is somewhat tricky when one has two bags to tote around. At the top of the escalator were BA ticket desks and the lanes to divide the passengers into lines based on where they were going. We stopped at the BA desk to see about changing the return flight from the 28th to the 25th. It was a bad sign when neither one of two ticket agents could locate the fare bucket in their system. So no change at LHR. Even worse the seat count in J had strangely gone from J7 to J0 in all CW categories within two days. I believe the AA backup plan will have to go into effect. LHR to ATH After the ticket desk we were off again to a line for connecting passengers. This was quite easy as there were staff members at the entrance to answer questions about the correct queue one was to enter. Once again it was up an escalator with the bags. This is getting tiresome. At the top is the security check. I still do not understand why there is a security check for passengers getting off an aircraft in order to connect to another aircraft. It would make more sense to do this right before boarding instead of right after arriving. I must say the security staff were all friendly and helpful. This day it was bags in bins and shoes on. I managed to set off the metal detector. I do not recall why. The result was a pat down. On collecting everything it was time to find the Concorde Room. I knew it was at one end or the other of the exit from the security area. Of course there were no signs indicating what was where. I soon found we had arrived at the south end of T5. So it was off to the north end. Sure enough at the north end of the floor we found the guarded door. Presentation of the F boarding pass for the just arrived on flight resulted in the dragon opening the door for us. While in the Concorde Room I took the time to examine the area. As others have described it consists of various sitting areas, a bar, a restaurant, the terrace, and the various washrooms. I found it interesting that the washrooms are all individual rooms. Very nice. The Cabanas are smaller than I expected, but adequate in size. All Mrs Paint Horse and I did was sit and drink as much caffeine as possible in order to overcome the lack of sleep on the flight over. I was pleased to see neither one of us experienced any jet lag. I found that odd considering the lack of sleep. After a couple of hours it was time to wander over to the departure gate for the flight to ATH. This was one of the most difficult parts of navigating around T5. The door dragon pointed us in the general direction, but we could not see the gate as it was hidden behind the shopping mall that inhabits most of T5. On the way to the gate we first entered a restaurant looking for the escalator down, yes another escalator. The restaurant staff pointed us to the other side of a store. After winding through a store the down escalator landed us in another store. But sure enough there hidden behind the cosmetics counter was the gate. The flight to ATH left on time on a 763. I did not know this aircraft had more room in the middle section of CE. We were in the A and B seats. There was enough room, but the middle section would have been better. The flight proceeded without difficulty. On arrival at ATH to my surprise it was down the steps and onto another bus. What is this with BA and buses? Do they own a worldwide bus company? At ATH it was into the terminal, through passport control, and to baggage claim. I see the Greeks are not really into border control. This was the most perfunctory examination and stamping of a passport I have seen so far. Baggage claim was a problem as the car service driver had to wait outside. This meant maneuvering eight bags from baggage claim to the nonsecured area. Carts were available at one Euro, of which I had none. Of course there is a currency exchange right there or should I say a highway robbery exchange right there. With one Euro in hand, which cost me two Euros, the bags were loaded. Athens Outside we were met by the taxi drivers. Yes, taxi drivers - plural. You see a Mercedes-Benz E Class taxi as used in Greece cannot hold eight bags. Therefore, we had to form a caravan. Mrs. Overpacking Paint Horse, myself, and two bags in one car; the rest of the bags in the other car. The trip from the airport to the hotel was interesting. Since Athens is so large traffic is quite thick. There are two primary methods used by then local drivers to manage this mass of traffic. First, they just go where they want to go regardless of who might already be there. At the last second if they perceive the other driver is more resolute than they are, then they change direction. The second method is to drive a motorcycle of some sort. Being small these weave in and out of traffic, make lanes out of the stripes on the road, and generally go whenever and wherever they wish. It works in Athens. If they tried this in Texas they would likely be shot. The hotel in Athens was the Grand Bretagne. This is a very old, but well maintained, hotel in the center of the city. Being older the rooms are just typical size and layout hotel rooms, but well appointed. From the balcony of our room we could look left at the Parliament building, straight ahead at Constitution Square, and to the right at the Acropolis. These views at night were very pretty. Before catching the ship in Piraeus the plan was to do as much touring as possible in two days. On the first day we made an early start with the tour guide to visit the Acropolis before the cruise ship tours arrived. This was the beginning of much walking that would be done in Athens. After climbing up, viewing, and climbing back down out the ruins of the Parthenon we went to the new museum to see the recovered artifacts in context. This is a very nice museum. While touring it the advance of a bevy of suits indicated the presence of someone special as one of the suits was the museum director. This group was escorting Queen Sophia of Spain through the museum. The next stop was a walking tour of Plaka. This is tour included lunch. I can say with no hesitation that no one who visits Greece will ever leave hungry. Lunch consisted of dish after dish after dish. After this first tour dinner was at Daphne's back in Plaka. The Concierge suggested we walk. I assume the city is safe at night or he would not have suggested so. Once again we found the food outstanding. This is an interesting restaurant. It is of course in an old building with part being inside and part outside. We sat at a table on a recessed patio. On the second day a new guide took us off in another direction to see the old Agora. This tour ended with a visit to the Benaki museum and lunch on the top floor. The guides had advised us, and we noticed the locals strictly adhered to, to never enter a traffic lane unless the green pedestrian sign was on. Otherwise you will become a mere speed bump for the many cars and motorcycles. We noticed while leaving the hotel as well as touring central Athens that there are a number of stray dogs in the area. The guides said the city allows them to stake out a territory. The city then provides shots and neutering to them. There were two dogs that stay at the hotel. The first, Sweety, stayed near the front door mostly. The second one assisted the traffic police every day. You could see him running back and forth barking at the traffic during rush hour. The last part of the tour commenced in the early evening with a drive to Cape Sounion. This allowed us to see some of the area outside of Athens as we drove to the temple at the cape. At the end of this dinner was at Ithaki. This is a restaurant in the Cape Sounion area that has received excellent reviews. The restaurant did live up to its reviews as the food was excellent, as were the views from our table outside on a patio. In fact the entire restaurant was more or less outside as the large doors to the inside portion were open. As in Athens we could see that the Greeks have a very casual approach to critter control. As we were eating two then three cats wandered by. One decided I looked like an easy mark, which is correct. He took up a position between my chair and the retaining wall beside the table. He then gave me a I have not eaten in weeks look. I dropped a piece of Lobster Thermidor to him. Let me just say subsequent portions were feed to these cats by the waiter using a fork. These little guys just wander around the restaurant. The last day in Athens was consumed by repacking and traveling to the port of Piraeus to board the ship. The ship for the remainder of the surface borne trip was the Regent Voyager. The itinerary for the trip unfortunately placed most of the activities one after the other at the beginning of the trip. Egypt After one sea day to transit from Greece to Egypt it was up early to take an overnight tour of Cairo. For this tour we drove through the eastern desert from Port Said to Cairo. The route took us down the side of the Suez Canal then over to Cairo. This was done as is typical in Egypt in a convoy with police at the front, back, and onboard each bus. You can always tell who the individual bus guards are as they wear a suit and tie regardless of the temperature. Under the jacket is a very large weapon. As this was our first experience with this it was more of a novelty at this point. The eeriness of this was to increase as we spent more and more time in Egypt. The first stop near Cairo was to the Step Pyramid. This was done to show the development of construction techniques from this early pyramid to the later more extensive ones. As we left this site to drive to the hotel the unique qualities of Egypt began to come into view. The three things that stand out the most to the casual visitor to Cairo are this must be one of the filthiest cities in the world, it must also be one of the most inefficient economies in the world, and that the drivers on the roads are maniacs. Let me expand. First, there is nowhere in the Cairo area where you can go without seeing trash everywhere. Trash piles are along the sides of the roads, in the Nile, in the canals, and around the buildings. This makes seeing Cairo quite the Jekyll and Hyde experience. Here are the builders of the great pyramids surrounded by trash piles. Second, there are thousands of unfinished buildings everywhere. The explanation we were given is that these are squatters. They find a piece of land and start building a multistory building on it. They never finish the building since if they did so they would have to begin paying taxes on it. What? Who owns this land they just built on? If the entire country knows what the scam is, why don't they change the law? This is after all a dictatorship. Third, along every road near the Nile there are small inefficient farms. I assume these are left to give the lower classes something to do. But it must be terribly inefficient in such small parcels. All in all the Egyptians are quite strange. An interesting insight into how the country is run was provided by one of the tour guides while at lunch on the second day. I asked who would take over when Mubarak passes away. He stated that it would be one of his sons. I asked him how the country would take to this. He said it mattered more what the United States thought about it, then what the population of Egypt thought. The final stop on the second day was to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. I must say these are impressive structures. Of course the idiot wife had to ride a camel. This consisted of employing the tour guide to negotiate a rate for the ride as well as standing in the middle of a herd of smelly beasts. Those things do stink. The hotel for the overnight in Cairo was the new Four Seasons across the street from the Nile. This is a very nice hotel. While watching the traffic on the street between the hotel and the Nile I finally understood why Egyptian drivers honk so much. It is because none of them stay in their lane. For example, while driving down one of the main multilane expressways around Cairo as we would approach a vehicle it would just slide over into part of our lane. The bus driver made a short honk. The other driver moved back in his lane. Then another vehicle would wander over into some other lane. They just pay no attention to the stripes on the road. To the Egyptian drivers a road is just one big, single lane. The location of this hotel is exceptional. Our room overlooked the Nile. Is was just the perfect experience to be standing on the balcony looking at the Nile as the sun went down with the call to prayer echoing across the city. This must be why people put up with the awful pollution in Cairo. It was so bad my nose ran the entire time we spent in the city. The evening of the first day was spent at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. This was a private opening of the museum just for our group of about 50 or so people. Although the total time in the museum was limited the lack of crowds allowed us to spend a sufficient amount of time at each of the major exhibits. I understand that during standard opening hours the museum is so full that it is difficult to see the exhibits. The last part of this stop was the drive to Suez to meet the ship. One more section of the eastern desert was visited during this transit. The boarding procedure at Suez was a bit odd. The Egyptians are just the opposite of the Greeks when it comes to passports and luggage. We first stopped at a warehouse in the port. We then proceeded to unload the luggage from the bus, walk into a warehouse where we passed it through an X-ray machine, then it was back on the bus to reload the luggage then drive a few feet to the dock. The ship did not dock in Suez so when it came time to examine the passports for exit from Egypt this was done on the dock in the dark. The only light the officials had was provided by cell phones. It seems we arrived a little later than expected. After some back and forth it turned out all they wanted to see was the Port Said entry stamp. Jordan The ship next docked in Jordan for another overnight stay. The port city of Aqaba is not very large, nor does there seem to be much activity at the port. While driving through the city it is easy to see major differences between Egypt and Jordan. In Jordan the roads, at least the ones in Aqaba and up north toward Petra, are very well maintained. Trash everywhere as we saw in Egypt is not seen in Jordan. All in all the Jordanians seem to know what they are doing. The first day of this overnight trip consisted of leaving the ship in the afternoon to travel to Wadi Rum. On arriving at the visitor's center for this area we switched from a new, air conditioned bus, with nice seats to a beat up, falling apart piece of shit small truck. One must climb up over the tailgate to find a seat on one of the benches that lines the sides of the bed. Now keep in mind that this is a ship full of older folks for the most part. By older I mean 65 to 90. I do believe sticking these sorts of folks in such conditions is a major error. I know I was not very comfortable with the arrangements. However, in looking around I did not see any better vehicles anywhere. Once onboard we proceeded to wander around the desert. There were several stops to climb small hills for a better view, look at various sand and rock formations, and examine the writings found in the area. Other than the poor quality of the transportation this was great fun. As the sun set we arrived at a tent camp for dinner. Dinner consisted of salads of various sort, incredibly thin round bread, and various meats cooked on a grill or in a buried pot. As in Greece I see no one leaves Jordan hungry. After dinner it was off to the Movenpick hotel at the entrance to Petra. This is a nice hotel with typical rooms. The next morning it was off early to Petra to beat the crowds. The picture everyone sees of Petra is the Treasury. This is the most impressive structure. However, there are many others below it. To be sure we saw all of it the guide kept up a quick pace. It seems the round trip from the gate to the sign at the end that says to not enter without a guide back to the gate is six miles. The first three are downhill, but of course the other three are back up that same slope. I must say for the entire last mile my legs were quite tired. Petra is well worth the trek however. There are numerous but well behaved vendors in several parts of Petra. They sell tourist junk, rides down or up, and beverages. Everything is one dollar or ten dollars or whatever amount they like to begin with. One must bargain. It was funny when we passed the small store at the entrance to Petra inside the park the vendor was saying water one dollar to everyone headed down. When I popped back out after several hours the same vendor looked at the exhausted woman beside me, then says water 20 million dollars. I think she would have paid it. After this tour and lunch at the hotel it was back to the ship for the second stop in Egypt. The second stop in Egypt was at Safaga in order to drive to Luxor. This is a very long trip through an even more desolate part of the eastern desert than earlier. Once more we were off in a convoy. In Luxor we only had time for a few of the main sites due to the length of the drive there and back. It did not help that for this stop as well as the previous stop in Egypt we had the talkative guide. These two guides were both very knowledgeable. The problem was they wanted to transmit all of this knowledge to us before letting us go see what they were talking about. They talked so much we never had enough time to see anything. All in all I do not recommend using Safaga to access Luxor. It just does not allow enough time. We did do everything the tour description indicated, but at a shortened time at each stop. The drive back was the most eerie part of the trip so far. We had to gather up all of the buses in a holding area before six in the evening as it seems they close the highway from Luxor to Safaga at least for tourist and it looked like commercial trucks at that time. On forming up it was off to Safaga. Especially in this part of Egypt I have never seen so many checkpoints. Most consists of small metal barricades that the traffic weaves through. At each one of these there is a group of either tourist police or what looks like members of a neighborhood crime watch as they are dressed in native costume. The police carry sidearms and sometimes rifles as well. The crime watch members each had a long gun strung over their shoulder. I am not sure what the Egyptians are afraid of. I am also not convinced that if trouble started these fellows would prove to be very effective. I must say though there are certainly plenty of them. The purpose of these checkpoints is not clear as at most of them no one checks anything. The police just stand there as the vehicles weave in and out of the barricades. The drive back was the oddest experience of all the odd experiences in Egypt. On leaving Luxor we were the first bus right after the small security truck that led the way. At first this was a small Chevrolet pickup with no one in the back. Later it was a beat up issan pickup with two rifle toting fellows in the back. I assume this was actually a Nissan with the N missing. From Luxor we proceeded from the green zone along the Nile out to the desert. Periodically we would pass the small neighborhood stops as well as more formal checkpoints. The formal checkpoints recorded our arrival. The point being to check us in and out of each section of the route. If trouble occurs they know where to send help. Now how fast and effective that help would be I do not know. As we moved further out in the desert things became odder and odder. For example, about halfway across the desert section two busses that had been behind us somewhere came flying past our bus which was first. They then proceeded to cut into place between us and the lead truck. Now if you are in a convoy going the same speed to the same place what is the point. The busses travel about 60 km an hour about ten feet from each other. After the two maniacs got settled into place we stopped for a while at a large checkpoint. The point to this was said to be to allow some other busses to catch-up. Catch-up? Were we not supposed to be in a convoy? So how did anyone fall behind? After waiting for a while the last bus appeared. According to some other passengers I talked to later at this stop we exchanged escort trucks. I could not see this as we were now the third bus in line. After we left this checkpoint a few miles out in the desert something flashed by the right side of our bus. The bus in front pulled out suddenly into the opposing lane. We sashayed slightly sideways after sliding along the sand at the edge of the road. After all of this bouncing around everyone formed back up and motored on. Our driver engaged in some discussion with the tour guide in Arabic. Later I was told we were not expected at the last checkpoint. Hum, I thought we were being checked in and out of each checkpoint? The escort had to be awakened for us to continue the trip. This appeared to irritate them. The result being he decided to proceed at a slower pace than the lead bus driver wanted to go. So the lead driver just ran him off the road and went on. The escort truck was what flashed by our right side as he was traveling down the sand shoulder of the road at that point having been runoff the road by the lead bus. Crazy Egyptians. We finally made it back to Safaga without further incident except on hitting the city limit all discipline in the convoy broke down. The drivers began to race to see who could get to the dock's checkpoint first. As I said crazy Egyptians. All in all I am not sure what to make of all of this tourist related security. It is certainly entertaining. I am just not certain how effective it is in either deterring attacks or in responding to one. Being a heavily armed Texan I would prefer to just pack my own firearms and watch out for myself. As we did not leave Egypt until the afternoon of the next day Mrs Paint Horse and I decided to try snorkeling in the Red Sea. We have done this quite a bit in the Caribbean. I must say the little we did in the Red Sea was better. The fish are everywhere as are interesting coral formations. Safaga itself offers nothing I can see to induce anyone to visit despite the interesting water. I was surprised to see several hotels on the beach. You could not pay me enough money to vacation in Safaga. Not only do you have to fly into Cairo you must then fly to Hurghada, and from there drive to Safaga. The water is nice, but not that nice. In summary Egypt was worth the short visit. However, Mrs Paint Horse and I do not appear to get along to well with this country. On arrival in Cairo my nose started running and itching. It continued this until we left. I assume I was allergic to the pollution. I have never seen such thick haze. On leaving Safaga I developed diarrhea and the Mrs Paint Horse a sinus infection. I have no idea where either one of these maladies came from. It is interesting to note that in the few blocks of the city we passed from the ship to the dive center we passed six pharmacies. It makes me wonder if they have a built-in business. When the ship left I was more than ready to go. Sea Day After the intensive number of ports visited at the beginning of this voyage it was thankfully time for three sea days as we transited through the Red Sea and on to Oman. The first sea day was spent recovering from Egypt. The only thing I did was write this trip report and attend a presentation on the security that would be in effect as we sailed through the Gulf of Aden. Regent arranged for a Royal Navy Commander to travel with us from Safaga. He held a talk on the state of the piracy problem in the area. His main point was if there was any danger to this ship, he would not have come aboard. As the route we traveled through the area is far from the trouble zone there is no reason for concern. Besides a cruise ship is an undesirable target for pirates. It travels too fast, the freeboard is too high, and there are way too many people to try to control. Besides if pirates actually succeeded in boarding a cruise ship holding some 1,500 passengers and crew every warship and aircraft in the region would surround them. The only security detail he would provide was to explain that the desired way to travel through the 26 hour danger zone is to group ships of like speed together. They then proceed as a mass. By the time they reach the main problem area all of the ships of various speeds end up together. In our case our speed is higher than any other ship so we proceeded at high-speed alone, but in the same area as everyone else. It was an interesting talk. Later in the day the ship's newsletter announced that access to the lower outside decks would be cutoff until we had passed the danger area. This was the only obvious security measure the ship took. This day also demonstrated the advantage to traveling by cruise ship. As mentioned above my wife came down with a bad case of sinusitis and I with a mild case of diarrhea. No doubt from merely being in Safaga. With a doctor onboard the ship it was a simple, but expensive, matter of treatment for both conditions. It is good these problems happened on the first of three sea days. A disadvantage of traveling by ship also appeared tonight when a massive amount of bubbles of some sort came boiling up out of the tub, shower, and bidet. Being on a ship in the middle of the Red Sea it is difficult to change rooms or hotels. All in all it was an exciting day I must say. Sea Day At breakfast on the second sea day I noticed the staff were serving the items on the buffet rather than the guests doing so. I learned later than there were now several cases of GI problems on board. This procedure along with a stronger sanitizing solution all over the ship was directed at stopping any spread of this. The plumber dropped by to clean out the pipes. The result was some but not much improvement in the bubbles in the bathroom. Sea Day The last sea day was spent in the Gulf of Aden. The number of ship sightings went way up. This must be a busy place. Some ships passed us going west while we passed other slower vessels headed east. We also picked up a naval escort which stayed just off our stern for several hours. Right before dark as we were exited the Gulf of Aden a military helicopter circled us several times. It then hovered off the port side so everyone could take a photograph. I assume this was to prove to us that the military was on the job. Salalah After three sea days the next stop was the first of two in Oman. This first stop was in Salalah at the southern end of Oman. This is basically a container port city. We docked at the far end of the container port. As the ship was late in arriving, we have an Italian captain you see, the tour of the city was somewhat abbreviated. The main point was to get an overview of the city. For this tour we visited the museum. This provided a look at the history of Oman both on land and sea. We also stopped at a fruit and vegetable market, as well as a souk. The main point to the souk visit was to buy frankincense. Oman is a new tourist stop. As such there is not much infrastructure for visitors just yet. The city leaves a very good impression on one however. Sea Day As it is six hundred miles to the next Oman stop at Muscat a sea day is required. Most of this day was spent reading and doing research for an article on wireless Internet access onboard ships. Muscat Muscat is a very nice city. As tourism in Oman is new there is also little infrastructure for tourist here. But the city is certainly worth a visit. At a minimum one should visit the Grand Mosque. This tour allows you to tour the entire site including inside the worship areas. There is also a museum that discusses the history of Oman similar to the one in Salalah. The souk near the waterfront is one of the more interesting ones we visited in the Middle East. It has the winding closed in look one expects of this type of market. Of course most of the things for sale are junk, but it is interesting nevertheless. Overall Oman is the cleanest, best run country we visited. It is an excellent example of how well a country can function when it has a benevolent despot as the head of the country. Dubai The last stop was Dubai. This is a much larger city than I thought it would be. We docked at the far end of the city in an industrial area. As it is very hazy photographs are difficult to take here. The ship stayed docked overnight after arriving about 2 pm. As we were to disembark the next day the first task was to pack the eight bags we brought onboard two weeks ago. After the repacking we took the ship provided shuttle to the Mall of the Emirates. This is now the second largest mall in the UAE. This is indeed a massive place. Inside is a sky slope. After buying several pieces of junk it was back to the ship. On the next day we left the ship. In between leaving the ship and boarding the DXB to LHR flight we toured Dubai with a tour guide. This high speed tour went from one end of the city to the other. Stops included an excellent museum in the old section, a ride on a water taxi, strolls through the spice and jewelry souks, drives though the main sections of the city, lunch at KFC, and a stop at the Atlantis hotel for a visit to the aquarium. English and American Culture At each stop I was amazed at how pervasive the English language and American culture are. In many of the countries English is more widely spoken than the native language due to the large number of immigrants. An example of the use of English and American culture was the lunch stop in Dubai at the KFC. The menu is in English with only a few Arabic subtitles. Ordering is done entirely in English. This was true to some extent or the other in every country we visited. DXB to LHR The flight from DXB to LHR was to be in F in the nose of a BA 747 in seats 2A and 3A. The only problem with the flight was the revised departure time from 2 to 3 am. Yes, 3 am in the morning. As the tour of Dubai ended at 6 pm I arranged to stay and eat dinner at a hotel. The Park Hyatt although lower in cost than most hotels I looked at in Dubai proved to be very nice, except for the lack of light. This seems to be a trend in hotel design. We arrived after dark. The hotel lobby was dark. All of the hallways were dark. In many cases the only light was provided by candles. The room was very dark as there are no overhead lights. Just dim lamps. The room itself was odd as well. On checking in the desk clerk stated we had been upgraded to a spa room. This room proved to be a slightly larger room with a spa table near the door. Beside the spa table was a sink which made sense. However, on the other side of the room was another sink. This one was between the desk and the window. Now what the purpose of it was is beyond me. In addition the shower could have held at least ten people standing or sitting on the bench that went all the way around the walls of the shower. I would certainly stay at this Hyatt again, but only if I pack several lanterns. The view from the room faced the creek that separates the city. We ate at the restaurant on site. This is the Cafe Arabesque. It features selections from several Middle Eastern countries. The food is very well prepared. At the airport things began to deteriorate. First I find that at DXB one submits their own bags for the security check. This meant maneuvering all eight bags through a long line to a scanner machine. Once there you must place each one on the conveyor. Then after the scan each bags must be loaded back up for the trip to the check in desk. Quite odd. At the check in desk I showed the agent the paper showing both the BA and the AA flights on the same record. He seemed a little uncertain about checking the bags all the way through to DFW, but he managed to produce a label with LHR and DFW both on it. He even issued the AA boarding passes. The next step was to walk from the check in desk, inside a secured area remember, to the gate while passing yourself and the carryon bags through not one, but three security checks in different parts of the terminal. At the last one the scanner operator objected to the sharp points on the 3/8ths inch long blades on the cuticle scissors I have passed through various airports with for years. Now what someone would do with cuticle scissors is beyond me. After walking for miles we arrived at the BA lounge which is also several miles past the gate for the flight. This must be one of the most dismal lounges in the BA system. It is small. No one cleans the tables off. But most of all it is way too crowded. Once at the gate when they called the flight to begin boarding I found that the entire population of the back of the aircraft was composed of gate lice as they paid no attention to the loading order. Once onboard I found another excellent BA crew including a CSD who introduced herself to everyone in the F cabin. As this was a 3 am in the morning flight all I did was wait for takeoff, then change clothes to sleep. Sleep I did on an aircraft for once. I did not eat on awakening as the plan was to wait until the Arrivals Lounge in T5 was reached. I was pleased to actually arrive at a gate instead of a remote stand requiring a bus. However, I had noticed that the terminal building seemed somewhat small. Sure enough we had arrived at T5B. The journey to T5 required a train ride. This was short and easy. Once in T5 proper the next step was to find the Arrivals Lounge. This turned out to require a trip through Border Control as the lounge is outside the secured area. The officer at the desk was quite alright with our six hour visit to the United Kingdom. The Arrivals Lounge was located with a couple of more questions of various staff members I accosted. Breakfast was soon served inside the Concorde Dining Room. While small it is nicer than the plastic tables and chairs in the main eating area. After breakfast we tried out various chairs in the lounge while waiting for time to move on to T3. LHR to DFW The return flight from LHR to DFW was on AA as the BA flight was full for some strange reason. On Sundays AA has two flights within a few hours of each other. The first one is three class service on a 777. The second one is two class on a 767. I do not know why they run two so different flights. After sitting for a few hours in the Arrivals Lounge in T5 it was time to navigate to T3. Not knowing how long it would take I allowed two hours. The method suggested by the BA staff in the lounge was to take the Heathrow Express. This is a subway. On arriving at the station we were directed to the front of the train as we were to get off at Heathrow Central. The ride was free, and only took a few minutes. The only trick is to be sure you get off at the first stop. Otherwise you will find yourself at Paddington Station in London. On arriving at the central station I assumed we would board another train. You do not. Instead there is a lengthy hike from the station up to the outside of T3. This is quite a walk. On arriving outside T3 the sign boards provide direction to which section of the building to go to for the airline of interest. In this case it was B for AA. In Section B the AA gates are 1-42. I could only find one very, very busy security area. As we walked past the extremely long line I spotted a Fast Track section. This line was about 1/20th the length of the other line. Despite the complaints I have found the BAA security staff to be very helpful. More so than the US staff. In this case we managed to have an oversized bottle confiscated, a watch run through by itself, and myself patted down and wanded. I told my wife the bottle was twice the acceptable size. Nevertheless she tried sneaking it through. If they had not shifted the staff around just as we approached it would have worked. Unfortunately the Sikh gentleman was more observant than his predecessor. I set of the detector as I forgot to remove a watch from my pocket. This resulted in a pat down and wanding. Just to be thorough they ran the watch through the scanner by itself. The pat down was proper but quite comprehensive shall we say. I must say for all of the abuse of the BAA staff I have read on FT in all cases the BAA staff at LHR could not have been more friendly or helpful. For example, Mrs Paint Horse is quit worn out. I should have traded her in long ago. She has a bad back and bad knees among other problems. Walking is difficult at times. A cane helps somewhat. As we traversed the marathon to gate 42 she asked a BA staff member if a cart ride could be arranged. She explained that they did not do that. It was another agency, in other words BAA. She did ask a BAA staff member walking by if they would take us to the gate, which they did. The AA flight also required a procedure I had not seen before. All of the passengers were required to check in at the gate desk even if you already had the boarding pass. This was required at least in our case in order to have the bags loaded on the aircraft. Gate lice were not in evidence at LHR. After boarding we once again found ourselves on a full AA flight. Despite reading this morning that AA has lost quite a bit of money in the latest quarter once again we found a completely full flight. At ten hours this is the longest flight I have been on. I was somewhat concerned at spending this time in a J seat, but I found the current J seats to be just fine for this daylight flight. I understand that there not being fully flat some find sleeping in them to be difficult. As I did not sleep they were fine. The flight was also made more pleasant by the best crew I have ever seen on any aircraft from the beginning of time to date. The purser in particular was friendly, funny, and informative. Although a J class cabin was the highest on this flight the crew served the lunch and before landing snack from the galley course by course, even using a blue tablecloth over the seat tray. The food was of course airline food, but not bad. Desert was the famous sundae. After lunch they dimmed the cabin for those who wanted to sleep such as Mrs Paint Horse. Following my adjust to the arrival city time to avoid jet lag plan I treated this as daytime for the whole way. As we droned on the cabin crew made numerous checks through the cabin. They even enforced the use the lavatory in your own section rule. Quite a good crew. The arrival at DFW brought once more new experience. On leaving the aircraft I found that one clears customs and border control with the declaration form then you must proceed to collect the bags for one more screening. This once again meant hauling all eight bags from the baggage claim to the outside world. Sure enough despite my concern not only did the bags arrive, but so did the car service. At last we were back home. I do believe the thing I missed most was being able to get a full glass of ice with someone looking at me as if I were crazy. It must be a Texas thing as we are always hot you see. Read Less
