Ok after the last 2 disappointing cruises with princess we thought we'd give cunard a go.Def aimed at.a diff market. .only one child on board for first half of cruise (poor bugger was lonely in kids club) The average age was older and this changed down to around 55 after melb. Embarkation and disembarking was brilliant.so much more efficient.Food was.great 8 out of 10 the ship was immaculate no leaking roofs and the carpet was stain free and trip over buckets or carpet dryers. The rooms were very good. The mens change room had a sauna which looked out over the sea...didnt have to pay for the expensive spa suite..9/10 and no one used it most of the time i was the only person there. The only downfall was the way they bill you in us dollars and charge your account. Drinks were expensive . Our semillionier in the Britannia dining room was Mysdrago from serbia who was so charming you could take him home. The only other issue was dining in the buffet for lunch or breakfast as there were not enough seating for everyone inside. The entertainment was very good. This cruise was not a booze cruise with everyone just having a nice time relaxing. Its not carnival or princess and doesnt cater for that market. We enjoyed dressing for dinner and whilst some standards were enforced (No swimmers.in buffet ) most of the time everyone dressed accordingly..had a great cruise definitely a much better standard for me anyway. My wife & I have done many cruises over the last 10 years,And this has to be the the lower end of all we have done,If this had been our 1st it would have been our last,1 With CMV, 1 with Tui/Marella/Thomson,2 with Cunard & about 16 with P&O,The check in at Southampton was amazingly quick,15 mins from pulling up to cabin is the fastest we have ever experienced,After that it was nothing special,We were experiencing a banging noise outside our cabin,we did contact the pursers desk,the head deck steward did respond very quick,after 30 minutes or so,The desk phoned and said it was a faulty part on the deck above,deck 9 lido,and was required for operational purposes from 07:00 to 23:00 hrs.,They did give some compensation & ear plugs.We were hoping that the faulty part was going to be repaired or replaced at our 1st. stop,Madeira,but no it wasn't and we had to endure this noise for the whole of the Voyage.The there's the entertainment,Or lack of it,There was an illness with 1 of the theatre group,OK I can understand that the show had to be rearranged,so accepted that,but the rest was poor,Pat Patton the the Golden Lion EVERY night,not that good either,A Juggler on the theatre,Come on,we are not 10 year olds,There was 1 night they had a pianist in 3 different bars/venues at the same time,John Martin "comedian" seriously needs new material,He's been on cruise ships for years & is still using the sames gags,Keeps going on about being from Bootle,I thought Liverpool was full of comedians,John not one of them.Entertainments teams didn't mix with the passengers,Cunard like to call us guests,Equinox were good stuck up in the club,but that was empty,with no atmosphere,They did the Golden Lion one night & the Queens room on the last,both were rocking when they were there,I did tick the poor box on the feed back,And the Entertainment Director phoned my cabin & asked if I/We could have a talk about my poor comment,I felt like a naughty child being summonsed to the head teacher,But he was OK,Don't know the average age,We are both in our late 50s.,were very young compered to others,We mention this to the director that Cunard need to move with the times.and start looking after today's generation of cruisers and not who are in the latter years of life,He did seem a little shocked at that comment,But when he thought about it,knew what we meant,they need to rotate the entertainers,We were asked about a cigarette stump/butt on our balcony & we don't smoke, Everything else was great. It was a short 4-sea day transit from Hong Kong to Singapore rather than a proper cruise, a short segment of the World Cruise. It falls on the Easter long weekend, and several hundred people embark from Hong Kong for the short ride without a shore day. Cunard operates the most formal type of cruise, of all cruise lines. Every dinner is dressy, one night formal and three nights informal (jacket required) without a casual night. This appeals to some cruisers, as the experience is akin to Titanic days. Cunard aims to provide the old 'white star' service and on Cunard if this is not perfectly achieved it does convey the good old time atmosphere. This is the first time I cruised on Queen Elizabeth (having cruise twice and 33 days on QM2 the last two years) and I like the ship almost as much. It is a beautiful ship in Art Deco style. The simple Britannia cabin was not bad, having tea making facility not found on most ships. The dinner service is formal and the food is good for a big ship (though Cunard price is higher than other big ships). Restaurant service is professional. The buffet is very good and there was a great display of Easter eggs on the Sunday night. The buffet lasts until 2am. If not luxury (if not on Grill) it is premium. Activities include the acclaimed Queens Room high tea in the traditional manner, and its ballroom dances...all these you do not find in other ships. It is a very civilized ship that even has a book shop on it. It was a good short transit, and while I took only a small segment, it gives me the impression that if I were to take a full world cruise Cunard would be my choice. The ship somewhat achieve a combination of big ship facility with an air of intimacy. Staff courtesy was good except my chamber maid evicted me from my cabin at exactly 8:30, and I note that she evicted everyone in my row of cabins while not working on the rooms...the next embarkation is the next day. Another hiccup was that it took 2 hours to embark a mere few hundred from Hong Kong, probably due to the land agent. Overall I was happy on this shortest cruise I have ever taken. Read Less

Our 1st time with Cunard, a 7 day cruise from Southampton to Lisbon and back. boarding was very quick and a small bottle of fizz in the room to help one settle in. The on board entertainment was very good the only problem being that we had 2nd sitting, this meant (1) hardly anybody else at our table for 6 (this was a common thing looking around the room), (2) all shows for the sitting at at 22:30 meaning one had to choose between the show and the other entertainment (balls etc). Food was very good along the American lines so had extra vegetables every evening, felt no need to use the other restaurants. Shore excursions expensive as normal, but they are very reluctant to give any information: only giving the port times the day before, or whether there will be a shuttle service. Tendering at Guernsey was badly handled, they made a big thing of a slight swell so that only one one person could board the tender at a time making it very slow as they used only one disembarkation point. Disembarkation at Southampton, were we did our own bags, was a farce as they got us to assemble on the wrong level so we had to be taken down in the lift in groups. All said we will probably cruise again with Cunard, just need to find the right itinerary, and with only 3 ships there are not many to choose from. Read Less

Choose this cruise for a short break for my husbands birthday. The ship was very clean and pleasant but found that the service was not what I had expected. Crew were not as smiley or friendly as I have experienced on other cruise lines whether this was because it was a short cruise and they knew tips were not going to big or what. We were dining in the Britannia Restaurant and on one evening our whole table left our main course, the waiter did not remark on the fact or asked what was wrong as you would expect. Drinks were very expensive we were charged the same for 2 glasses of wine at dinner on the first night but purchased a bottle for a further $5 on the second night, it would of been nice if the wine waiter had pointed this out to us on the first night,. Entertainment staff were of or more mature age and seemed to be very false when introducing acts and no enthusiasm when hosting deck games. Overall was disappointed with Cunard and will go back to my regular cruise line Princess. Read Less

Excellent four day cruise on Queen Elizabeth to Hamburg. Service as always very good. Only complaint is the double whammy of the daily service charge plus a 15% surcharge when you order drinks of any kind. Onboard entertainment very good. Hamburg is an excellent city to visit take either the local tour bus or the boat trip around the lake and canals an excellent way to see the city and surrounding areas. The cabin we had was inside on deck 8 which was spacious enough and very clean, our cabin steward was very obliging and nothing to much trouble. Meals in the Britannia restaurant very good with a good choice for both breakfast and dinner. We used the buffet restaurant a couple of times and choice was very good, better than P&O. Don't forget to do afternoon tea, a delightful experience. Tea and strawberry tarts in Café Carinthia to die for. Pre dinner drinks in the Commodore Lounge with canapes Read Less

Passengers not allowed on observation deck; poor food quality, quantity and choice in Grills’ restaurants; fitness centre not up to UK safety standards; and rip-off prices for shore trips. All these on a cruise from Dubai to Southampton on Queen Elizabeth in April/May 2016. In the last four years my wife and I have completed 11 Cunard cruises including five on Queen Elizabeth. This one is likely to be the last we make on that ship. On the four previous cruises on QE there has always been access to the open observation area at the forward end of deck 9 for any passenger to take video and photos of entry into ports, etc. But on this entire cruise it was closed to passengers except for transiting Suez Canal. Three of the ship’s officers, including the captain, gave me different and contradictory excuses for it being closed. None of them were credible. The access to this viewing area - the only open forward-facing space for passengers - is from doors on the port and starboard sides of the fitness centre. Both were marked ‘Emergency Exit’ but both were locked. Asked why such doors were locked the fatuous excuse given by senior officers was that the doors were not an exit from the fitness centre onto the open deck, but were from the open deck into the fitness centre (as they could be opened manually from the outside). Asked how a person could get outside when the doors were locked produced silence or a quick change in conversation. No credible reason was given for the viewing area being denied to passengers or for the emergency exits being locked When I wrote to Cunard HQ with details of the matter - with names, dates and photos - the response from Customer Services was that if the captain decided to close that area that was his decision because he was in charge of the ship. They declined to reply in writing. Dissatisfied with being fobbed-off, I referred the matter to a director of Cunard. His response was that the area ‘is not an advertised passenger area’ and its opening is at the captain’s discretion. But no reason was given for it being closed and no comment was made on why emergency exits were locked. My request for an assurance that the deck would be open on future Queen Elizabeth cruises - and the identical Queen Victoria - were ignored. So passengers should be aware that if they sail on these ships their access to the deck in question is at the whim of the captain. My frequent visits to the fitness centre to check the doors showed that it did not meet UK safety standards. Bearing in mind almost all passengers were pensioners, no assessment was made of a person’s fitness to use the equipment, no training was given in its use and there was no continuous supervision. Anyone could walk in and use mechanical equipment or weights. One of the two trainers admitted they were not supervising all the time due to personal training commissions, taking classes and meal breaks. He accepted that a person could die if suffering a heart attack or stroke when using the gym on his/her own with no-one to call for assistance. The quality, quantity and choice of food served in the Princess Grill has deteriorated over the past year. The dining room staff said it was due to the menus being dictated by Southampton HQ instead of on-board ship and - like our cruise on QE at Christmas - said there was nothing they could do about it. Many items did not match the menu description; many descriptions were obscure; quality was often poor; and several meals were sent back. Vegetables seemed to be in short supply or pathetically small or both. Food in the Lido buffet was far better than in the expensive Princess Grill. As usual, all shore excursions were at a high price. For example, a day trip from Aqaba to Petra was $217 each. So for each 50-seat coach Cunard was raking in over $10,000. And, in Istanbul a private minibus (of unspecified seating capacity) could be had for $1,000 for a tour of some tourist sites for a day (8.30am to 5.0pm). Lastly, the ship’s itinerary listed Salalah, Oman as its second port of call. But QE did not go to Salalah but docked at the container port of Raysut over 20km to the south. Cunard provided a shuttle bus only from the ship to the dock gate. Getting to Salalah was a $100 taxi ride. And for the return journey the taxi drivers wanted even more cash. Read Less

Boarded Brisbane 24th Feb at Grain Terminal !st port of call Cairns Went ashore in large catamaran excellent transport compared to ships tenders 2nd port of call Rabaul We decided to do a shore tour What a disaster Cost US$119 each for a 4 hr ride to hell and back , decided to go and have some acupuncture to ships acupuncturist to relive some of the aches and pains ) Debbie Ai knows her stuff and her treatment helped tremendously (cost us$ 1500) for 5 treatments each Temperature 36 degrees C hi humidity .We boarded our minibus to find a very shabby interior no air conditioner working/shock absorbers at 20% working/dirty/non operating seat belts and multiple cracks thru windscreen. Our tour visited 3 places 1st War museum which consisted of a 1 acre of well mowed grass a couple of buildings and all these war machines almost totally rusted away and still deteriorating due to no overhead protection and a crocodile in a enclosed pond at back of display. Next ,visited war cemetry which is financed by the Australian Government which is very well maintained and worth seeing. (beautiful setting) At no stage did the tour operator commissioned by the ship (PAIVU TOURS) offer to stop for a drink or a pit stop for the ladies. We could have hired a local taxi and had airconditioned comfort at a fraction of the price the ship charged. Next stop Japanese tunnels (very interesting if you could see I had to turn my Iphone torch to see where i was going ) Poorly presented with only 3 x10 watt fluros distributed along the entire tunnel (80 metres) system driven by a petrol generator at the entrance and extension leads to the floors causing a trip hazard to the visitors . Roads are full of very large pot holes which do not seem to get much maintence making the trip a back ache/cramped leg nightmare As expected we did not go on anymore paid shore tours Next stop CEBU but this was cancelled during trip in favour of Puerto Princesa a beautiful town in an great location. Dis embarkation in Hong Kong was another nightmare which was totally cunards fault. They had a plan but- it totally got stuffed up .Luggage was collected the night before and arranged by deck number to be off loaded with the passengers from that deck. Guess what they unloaded half the luggage from deck 8 then released luggage from deck 7 then 6 while the people from deck 8 were still in the collection area looking for the other half of their luggage , In the meantime the people from lower deck 7 -6 were released into baggage collection pickup area (very small) were people could not move. It was so crushed that a person could have easily had a heart attack in this environment which was also very cold 12 degrees C and wet The average age of the passengers on the QE was 71 years old and very few children all of who were well behaved The off loading point at Ocean terminal was not appropriate for this size of vessel or the number of people getting off for tours and disembarkation. Another fiasco was the organization of emigration documentation (held on board) which was compounded by late arrival of officials and the route to and from the imigration officials set up by QE staff to get the people thru. Apart from the above I would highly recommend the Ship and the crew excluding the people responsible for the above fiascoes Read Less

Having travelled on and enjoyed the Queen Mary 2, decided to try the Queen Elizabeth, we were a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews! however after some 22 nights on board, we left the ship totally satisfied! Our Balcony stateroom was very clean, bright, and indeed very pleasant, our Steward could not have been more helpful, in fact we found all the crew and officers with just a couple of exceptions, to be most friendly and helpful, always very courteous and offered a genuine smile... The exception being the staff in the Verandah restaurant, who we found to be very surely and patronising to say the least, the food was perfectly fine but the whole service was dreadful, but we did not allow this to spoil our overall cruise experience. We really liked the Britannia restaurant, and also enjoyed the Lido Restaurant which we used occasionally for breakfast or lunch, we enjoy a bottle of wine with our evening meals and found that the Cunard 'House Wine' was very acceptable and represented good value (e29.75) compared to the other vast choice on offer, sadly the 15% service charge did not really please us! The lectures were really first class, as was most of the evening entertainment, we found some of the tours on offer were a little too expensive and not value for money. To end this review, we say - Well Done Cunard, we are looking forward to our next cruise on one of The Queens! - However, we would like a 'guarantee' that we will be assured of a table for TWO, and not just hope that one will be available, after all, if you dine in a top hotel you are not expected to share a table, and it is our choice not to do so on a ship! After a 60 minute wait we boarded the ship at 1pm, dropped off our luggage at the cabin, and had a quick lunch at the Lido buffet. We enjoyed everything about our cruise, especially eating in the Britania Club restaurant, most of our meals were taken there, we were looked after most royaly by our waiters Emmanual and Dennis. Nothing was too much trouble for them, eg. extra sauces, extra vegetables. A bonus of eating in this restaurant was having the freedom to eat when we chose, without the cost of the grills. We ate fish and chips at the Golden Lion one lunchtime, always very popular,and sometimes hard to get a table. We had afternoon tea most days in the Lido buffet as there were long queues at the Queens room, and we had previously enjoyed this experience on the Queen Victoria. Ditno, out cabin steward soon knew our routine, and our cabin was always cleaned on our return from breakfast, he also regularaly checked if there was anything else we needed. We had a wonderful sailaway from Hamburg on the Sunday,the marathon had been held earlier in the day, and crowds lined the banks to wave us off. I have read previous reviews of this cruise, and I can only comment on our experiences. We had a wonderful cruise, we were treated with respect and friendliness by all,and we are counting the days for our next cruise on the Queen Mary for the Queens Jubilee. Read Less
