This is not the quality product I thought I was paying for and would strongly advise people to avoid Cunard ships if you expect this to be a quality upmarket cruise company. Cunard are first class at the glossy branding and marketing but the product is very poor. In summary, you are on a British ship where the currency is dollars and most staff struggle with the English language; so if you have a question or an issue they simply nod their head and agree, but do nothing. Areas of the ship are in poor condition. The food is very average, in fact I’ve had better on an aeroplane. The entertainment was basic and frankly second rate. We upgraded to a Queens Grill suite, as close to first class as possible and it was not cheap, but still it was a very very poor experience. I had expected elegance at sea and a first class experience. It was more like a 4 start hotel with a ‘Faulty Towers’ service style. There where various issues with the cruise, including Cunard leaving us stranded for one night as the ship was late to arrive. We had to find our own accommodation which was a challenge and they never even said sorry. When we got back their customer service staff were not interested in how bad it was for us. I even spoke with the CEO David Noyes and his attitude was poor. This says a lot about a company’s culture to me. I will not sail with Cunard or Carnival again and would strongly persuade anyone who is thinking about it to look elsewhere and avoid the disappointment. Cunard are trading on their connection with the British Royal family which is a mere name on a ship combined with some past glory. If you get a late deal at a bargain price then by all means it could be worth it but do not expect too much. Definitely do not pay over the odds and expect to have a good experience. Read Less

Cruising, they say, is not what it used to be. This should come as no surprise because few things remain the same. Take air travel for instance. I'm told that people used to get dressed-up for a flight. Nowadays you're lucky if your neighbour is wearing a proper shirt and shoes. Cruising too comes from a rich heritage where the style of the voyage was more important than the substance of actually getting to one's destination. Unfortunately it was with high expectations that I boarded the Queen Elisabeth for Cunard's Holy Land Cruise. One's initial impressions are good. It seems that the glory days of cruising live on in the Cunard name. The ship is huge, the carpets are plush and there's not a plastic table in sight. Curved wooden banisters provide an impressive backdrop as one descends the staircase to the formal dining room in which a strict dress code is enforced. Meals are exquisite and the service impeccable. But then the bubble bursts. No you can't have a cappuccino with your meal; that's an extra-cost item. You can't get the picture they took of you in digital format; you have to buy 12 for $300. The "behind-the-scenes" tour costs $120 per person. Internet cost $48 for two hours. And on it goes. It was early on in the cruise that they announced the first cancellation. The ship would not be sailing to Haifa because of the Gaza conflict and all Holy Land tours were cancelled. The fact that there was no unrest in Haifa and no Gazan missiles could reach the port didn't seem to matter. Carnival Security in the US had spoken and the decision had been made. A meeting with the Ship's Master confirmed that there was no recourse and contractually guests have no recourse. Now the Un-Holy Land Cruise we proceeded to Alexandria. We were not far off when that stop was cancelled too. Unrest in Tahir Square and in the centre of Alexandria again exceeded Cunard's security profile and, although no tour was actually going anywhere near either square the decision had been made to miss the stop (and berthing fees). No Pyramids for this batch of cruisers -- and nothing could be done about it. Never mind, there was Pompeii to come. But then the wind picked up and the Captain cancelled the Naples port visit. Let's face it Cunard's business has fallen on hard times. Disposable income has dried up and so has the number of eligible cruisers. Money saved on berthing fees and fuel savings on truncated sailing flows directly to Cunard's bottom line. When it comes to cruising Cunard is just like all the others. I just wish they would be more truthful in their brochures. It's buyer beware -- when you embark the ship don't expect to go everywhere they tell you; and there's nothing you can do about it. The giant chess pieces on the upper deck epitomised the Cunard cruising ethos. There are only seven white pawns. "One blew away several cruises ago" a crew person told me. Read Less

what should have been a holiday of a lifetime was a disaster. The second voyage of a new ship, obviously still having teething problems. The swimming pools advertised were actually little bigger than a paddling pool. Guests swimming without a shower, full of hair laquer and perfume and sweaty bodies. All the vegetables were cooked in butter especially difficult trying to be healthy. We were looking forward to the juice bar alas it wasn't included and was very expensive. The girl on the bar couldn't really be bothered if we got served or not. Spa was second rate with what appeared to be unqualified staff. Sauna was only luke warmand we had no information on how to use the massage showers. The Queens dance room often had mop buckets on the floor! Some of the staff were extremely pleasant and efficient but many appeared not to be able to understand english and very tired. Before leaving the ship at southampton we waited for an hour with disabled guests in a cold, draughty room without a hot drink. not the service we expected. Read Less
