For context, I usually cruise Disney so I can’t help but make it my point of reference. I took my 10YO son on a 3 day cruise from Vancouver to LA. Our main objective of the trip was to spend time together, enjoy the food and enjoy being at sea. I splurged on a club class mini suite. I. Not sure the ‘club class’ was worth the extra $$, but we loved the mini suite. So much space for just the two of us - very luxurious. We especially loved the robes and the extra large balcony. The ship is looking (and smelling) a little dated. It was nice to have a shower/tub combo but the tile was looking super old. Also, there were odd smells noticed in our room. The hall and especially up on the sports deck. I am mixed on the food. I was not impressed with the buffet but had great meals at Portofinos dining room. The wait staff were exceptional. I was impressed with the pools! Lots of options for kids and adults. And super fun to have the big screen showing movies out by the pool. I was told the ship was full and yet it never seemed that busy. The buffet was occasionally lined up. Overall, great cruise. Service was up to par with Disney, restaurant food was excellent and our room very comfy. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I needed a small break. It was perfect to leave from my home port. The stop in Astoria was uneventful. I would have liked to stop in Seattle or San Francisco, anywhere but Astoria. The people at my dining table were wonderful. we ranged in age from 48 - 82 and had a great camaraderie. The games were hilarious at times. The staff were awesome. They upgraded me to a balcony which I loved. I sat out there in the mornings with my tea and just listened to the sound of the waves and was at peace. I was able to see some whales blow but not emerge or breach. Dani, Christopher, and Carlos took great care of me in the dining room. The food was bland. I heard this complaint from several guests onboard. I don't know if they don't season the food because they think most of the guests are elderly and cannot tolerate it. The worst food on the ship was a veggie burger up on 14. It was soggy and fell apart and tasted terrible. I found the heat inside the ship to be way too high. Read Less

This cruise came about when my wife and I wanted a quick getaway. We were were on the Ruby last year in Alaska and were looking to take it's repositioning trip south but the Coral itinerary (stopping once in Astoria) was better so that was that. The ship does have a few odd perks. Buffet is forward instead of aft, restaurants are also forward. International cafe is open to the casino, a definite negative. Almost everything else, however, is a strong positive. Ship was in good condition, most of the crew was great and entertainment was wonderful. We spent a lot of time listening to music in the Wheelhouse bar, mostly the jazz band but had plenty of dance music options. Princess stage entertainment was great. Bayou steakhouse was a strong negative. First, who decided that a cajun steakhouse was a good idea? The venue had no idea what it wanted to be. Second, service was poor with an invisible head waiter and inattentive waiter. Finally, my NY strip was tough beyond belief. I have never sent any dish back in my life until I tried to eat the steak. It was properly cooked medium rare but still not worth eating. My wife's filet was not properly cooked but the waiter never stuck around long enough for us to report the problem. Service took forever and I was charged for a bottle of wine I never ordered (ultimately resolved with 3 trips to the service desk.) This was one negative in an overall very positive experience. Let's start with the condition of the vessel. It needs some major repairs to it's plumbing systems as we had personal loss of our toilet multiple times this cruise and saw many leaking ceilings and buckets throughout the ship. Heard stories of cabins flooded and carpet replaced, our friends were relocated along with their neighbors due to repairs to their cabins. However I cannot find fault with the crew of this vessel. Captain Tuvo has a very happy crew, we heard crew people tell of how nice it is to work on board the Star and it showed right to the customers as well. Dinner in Sabatini's was fantastic for both service and food. Anytime dining was great, never having any issues getting a table when we wanted. We tried to get Edwardo and Paul each night as they were so good with service and timing of our meals. The barrel chair was in our caribe cabin and we were thrilled to see it. Air conditioning did not work on our warmest day in San Francisco when jellyfish clogged the cooling system we heard, but in our cabin is was fine. Overall the ship does need some care and we heard it will be dry docked in April to upgrade to medallion. Not sure we would sail her again only due to ship condition but not the crew.....they were a joy. Also enjoyed the smoking lounge Shooters for a cigar and whiskey. I also thought the pools were heated somewhat.....on one day the rear pool was too warm for my taste. Oh yea....this cruise also was to pick their entertainer of the year 2019 so they had four on board to do shows and we voted. The singer Phillip Brown won and he was great. Also even with it's plumbing issues I have to say the public restrooms were some of the cleanest and well cared for we have experienced at sea. Read Less

Princess takes great care of suite passenger so we enjoyed breakfast in Sabatini's, club class dining, special room services menu items, priority spa reservations, room service on debarkation day and many other extras. We think the cabin price is worth it. We've never complained about quality of food on our many Princess cruises and this one was no exception. In fact, we thought food on this trip was particulary good. Club Class dining each night had a special tableside dish that was delicious each time. We visited the Crown Grill and Sabatini's for diner twice each during the trip and enjoyed truly exceptional meals and service.The crew we encountered was all top notch--friendly, cheerful, attentive and professional. I would have like to have ticked five stars above but we were very disappointed about having two of six ports cancelled. The culprit was the weather which of course is out of Princess's control but the complaint is how missing these ports was handled. We happened to be on a Princess cruise in the maritime provinces of Canada during Hurricane Sandy that caused several of the eastern seaboard stops to be cancelled. Rather than just bob about until it was clear to sail south, Princess found a couple of places for us to visit while we waited. In the current case, Crown Princess merely changed course and aimed to the next stop after a cursory announcement from the captain. It seemed to us that in the case of cancelling the Azores call, we could have remained at Lisbon to have the advantage of a full weekday ashore or stopping at Madeira. Surely the captain knew before we left Lisbon that Hurricane Lorenzo would keep us from the Azores, so we could have stayed at the dock. If we couldn't, an explanation of why not would have been the courteous thing to do. Likewise, an explanation of why Madeira couldn't be a substitute would have been appreciated, especially since we got close enough to that destination to transfer a medical patient from Crown Princess to a boat sent out from Madeira. We think the passengers deserved more than silence. One other minor gripe. Our coffee card from an earlier cruise was refused as having expired. At sale, the cards are advertised as being good on later cruises for specialty coffees and there's no mention of expiration. Pretty cheap on the part of Princess to declare one has expired. Read Less

This was a three night hop from Vancouver down to Los Angeles, an excellent way to pick up cruise credits en route to free laundry. :) The Ruby is not our favorite ship by a long shot. It’s small, and it feels small, despite her ability to carry so many people. When we got on board, I couldn’t believe the Horizon Court wasn’t a snack bar. What the heck? This was our second time embarking at Vancouver, so we know this wasn’t typical for them - or at least, this wasn’t what they used to be. There were three ships in port and boarding was a zoo. We came into the garage and were shuffled into a queue to a single elevator with our luggage to go down to the second garage level to drop off our luggage, then into another queue to take another elevator back up to queue up to register to get on board. Word to the wise: if you use a cane or are handicapped at all, GET A WHEELCHAIR as soon as you arrive. I was using a cane and was in significant pain by the time we finally got through all the check-ins, customs, immigrations, etc. Just... swallow your pride and use the damn chair. The food was, unfortunately, the least inspiring we’ve had on Princess. Not bad, just not great. Well, no. The Horizon Court selection really was quite poor, probably because it was just so darn small. Dinners were average - nothing special, which was disappointing. What really got my goat, however, was Princess is now so into increasing revenue on board the ships, the menu in the dining rooms include “selections from the Crown Grill for your convenience”... so if you didn’t get a chance to make a reservation at the Crown Grill (the pay-extra dining experience) you can fork over $19 - $29 for an entree in the regular dining room for an upgraded dinner. That is one slippery slope, IMO. Where does that stop? When do we start paying for all our meals, regardless of what we order, in the dining room? This I do not like. At ALL. I didn’t see anyone order upgraded meals, so hopefully that will stop, but who knows, maybe they will expand the practice. I sure hope not, but they seem to be pushing sales for as much as they possibly can, all the darn time. They’re now selling escape room activities, albeit for only $5 each, but it’s another pay-to-play, and $20 for a family of four. Bingo is getting more and more expensive (it’s now $59 for the most expensive package). Gelato will set you back $1.50/scoop, and sodas are $9.95/day + 15% gratuity + tax. Don’t ask about the unlimited booze, you can’t afford it. Someone (anyone) needs to teach them what afternoon tea is. It is NOT a hard roll and sugar cookies. It is finger sandwiches and little decorative cakes. It is scones with clotted cream and jam on BOTH SIDES of the scone after it has been split. It is a selection of tea (not just Earl Grey, which is all they had). That was just bad. How about the good stuff? The staff is great as ever. I love the trivia games (I wish they would schedule them a bit further apart from bingo...) Disembarking was a breeze (although the LA Port is a pig, there’s almost no where to sit while you wait for your ride, but that’s not Princess’ fault). Will we take Princess again? Unquestionably. We boarded in St. Petersburg after a 4 day stay in town. Wonderful visit and nice, safe place, with friendly people. Lots to see and do, and cabs are cheap. The terminal experience was very unusual however. We expected the regular crush of hundreds of other passengers, but there were fewer than a dozen that we saw during our processing. The Medallion system isn't really much of a benefit under these type situations. The ship is in good condition, I didn't see any wear and tear anywhere, and the crew keeps it quite clean. The décor is a little boring except in a few spots like the central atrium. That said, the layout is peculiar in that there are parts of the ship that are difficult to reach, and not in the typical locations. For instance, the rear set of elevators ends at deck 6, but you need to go up a level to actually get anywhere except cabins on that deck. The buffet has somewhat narrow passages on each side and this causes a lot of bumping and confusion, particularly at peak meal times. Smoke from the open ceiling casino vents into the shops above and became an issue for passengers. My biggest disappointment with the entire cruise is the food in the buffet. The selection and availability is good, HOWEVER it is never hot! I mean it's barely warm. All the toasted items like bagels English muffins, French toast, etc. will not even begin to melt butter. Eggs are fried in batches and put out 20 or so at a time and also lukewarm. By the time you get to your table with your meal, everything is usually at room temp. The scrambled eggs taste like they began as powdered, and the omelets seem to be made from the same mix. The pastry selection is usually good for every meal in the buffet I must say. The highly touted "Highest Speed WiFi At Sea" was practically unusable for a full 5 days while crossing the Atlantic. Speeds typically were between 50-150kbps, similar to dialup or DSL speeds over 10 years ago. The Captain apologized, announcing it was the lack of satellite coverage, but it should have been no secret that over 25% of our 19 day cruise would encounter such poor service. The gym is sparsely equipped with basic machines like curls for instance. It's also small, and at the rear of the ship, unlike most I've seen. The main theatre does not have enough seating for anywhere near 1/2 the passengers, so you'll need to arrive 30-45 minutes before a show to get a few decent seats. Entertainment was average with the usual mix of entertainment. The dining room anytime dining is good, and we ate there about half the time. Alfredo's pizza on deck 6 is great and I highly recommend it for a quick, good individual pizza. The Calzones also looked good, but I didn't try one. I doubt I'd book this cruise again mostly because of the buffet food temps and the poor WiFi at sea, but overall, it wasn't a bad experience, just not great either. The standard balcony cabins are small compared to Celebrity and Royal Caribbean, with no couch and tiny bathrooms. The balcony was only about 4 feet deep it seemed, barely enough room to have a chair face out to sea. The Medallion feature turned into a major yawn for us. It only was used to unlock our door and check in and out in port. NO ONE used the public panels to navigate the ship or anything else that I noticed. There are at least 5 different Princess apps to download if you want to bother, but they are confusing and do very little easily. I've been on over 50 cruises, and I walked away slightly disappointed in this one. Read Less

Overall a nice experience. Great cabin, balcony was well used and steward was perfect. Food was not up to other Princess ships I've been on but service was wonderful. I should clarify, Horizon Court Buffet at times reminded me of college dorm fare. Shows were very good. The most annoying thing was the constant announcements of sales. Yes, they have to make a profit but sometimes it's the little things that make a customer feel special. It was exciting to receive a packet in the post with documents, luggage tags and great expectations of an upcoming adventure. Now you have to print yourself documents etc etc. Nice touch at the end of the cruise was the airlines luggage program. Bags whisked away not to be touched again until you land at your home airport. Note the Star is getting a bit long in the tooth. Showing some age, it gets hard to maintain a ship after 15 years of service. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we were visiting China and it fitted in with our timetable. Decided it was a great way to get home instead of flying and hadn’t done a Princess Cruise before. We spent 10 days prior to the cruise exploring Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu and Shanghai. The embarkation and disembarkation were a credit to Princess Cruise as was the organization for each excursion. We enjoyed the variety of ports, the food in the main dining room was good, but the food in the Lido on deck 16 was average. It was only ever lukewarm and very repetitive. The entertainment in the theatre left a lot to be desired and the continuous days at sea were long. Other cruises have run workshops, seminars and information sessions, which were replayed on the tv in your room for you to watch if the coincided with other things. Unless you were into dancing, bingo or casino there was very little to do. The crew were fantastic and it is the first cruise we have done where all the crew appeared to be genuinely happy and getting on with each other. These negatives only relate to a small part of the cruise and I would not hesitate to do another Princess Cruise. Read Less

Let me start by saying that the actual ship is very nice and we had a nice trip. PROS: The cruise directors, Andrew & Andy, were really fun. The entertainment was very good. We enjoyed the various trivia games, there was a great magician, awesome juggler, and very interesting high-tech lights\video\music act. The food was great in both formal dining room and buffet. They have great video screen at the pool that plays recent movies (that you can also view later in your cabin). There are fun "touch screens" on every floor where you can locate the people you are travelling with, see deck plans, the entertainment schedule, AND there is fun "explorer puzzle game" for the kids to play. There are 3 regular sized pools (one is private one for adults only near the spa), and one very small "kid's area pool", so there are different options. I think they make good use of the space and boat doesn't feel too large (or too small). Also, very "non pressure" from the staff. I've been on some cruises where they are always trying to sell you things, but this ship wasn't like that. Stops on our cruise were awesome. In particular I loved Quebec City, & Prince Edward Island. Halifax is nice, but a bit more of a bustling city. Sidney Nova Scotia is cute town but a "young port" so tour options (e.g. if want to go to the Alexander Graham Bell museum) are limited if you don't book ahead. You can't even really even find a taxi. - - - CONS: There are limited shore excursions and most of the good ones they sold out months before the cruise. (Not sure why they can't see the high demand and arrange for additional tours). It ended working out OK for us though because we found that for most ports you can find alternative tours outside of the port for cheaper than Princess charges. The EXCEPTION though is the port of Sydney, Nova Scotia. If you don't book something ahead won't be able to find trips on short. The "app" (where you can order drinks and see entertainment schedule seems to be a bit of a work in progress (didn't work very well for me). I could see upcoming events schedule but never could do anything else with it. There was mystery "high seas heist" ongoing game that we participated in, which was semi-fun but sloppily run and slightly confusing. There is "kids club" for area but for some reason it is closed from Noon-to-2PM so it didn't work out well for my wife and I when we wanted to do some of the things like the art auction on the boat, or trivia. Also, the staff in the area are not that friendly, and per my kids (so take with grain of salt) they had strictly regimented task for them to follow. (e.g. they couldn't just draw, read, play video games or Foosball when there was an activity like "t-shirt painting" going on. You have to do what group is doing while in kids club, at least if you are in the 7-to-11 year old section). Perhaps not the cruise line's fault but found the "exit port" in Brooklyn NY to be run horribly. A lot of confusion, and they routed people into different lines... allowed people to cut in the lines... and ultimately you could just walk out of the port if you wanted to (there was no security check or anything) so all the confusion wasn't really necessary if they were better organized. Lastly, bad ratings to our cabin (E514), mostly because it is located directly above the lounge where loud music is played most nights. Read Less

Coming from Florida, this cruise was a good choice for us. We have easy access to Port Everglades and had the opportunity to enjoy cooler summer weather in New England and Canada. We have sailed with Princess many times and are Platinum. The ship is pretty, the food is good, and the ports enjoyable. A downfall for some might be the entertainment. The peculiarly designed showroom fills up fast, and one needs to claim a seat almost an hour before a performance. We didn't bother going. Too much trouble. Because this was a new itinerary for employees in the excursion department, they were inexperienced and caused some chaos with crowds leaving the ship at various ports. At some of the ports, the walkways from the ship to the terminals were very long...one example was Charleston which was 5 stories down..and then up. Our balcony cabin was attractive with new carpeting. However there was some mold in the bathroom and a dirty bed skirt which was quickly replaced. We did have a wonderful 13 days on the Caribbean Princess. Vacations are what you make of them. Read Less

Princess was doing the Panama canal ... we had been on the sister ship Ocean Princess, so were happy to go on the Pacific Princess. Loved the cruise....weather just o.k. service, food, entertainment great......except for the dining room. We were told that princess had changed there dining hours to 5p.m. early and 7:15p.m. for late. Since we like early dining and felt 5 was too early, we chose 7:15..... SURPRISE......each ship can decide on their hours.......5:30 and 7:45. We tried late dining......still at the table at 9:30. We requested early seating, a large table and was given table 34. The next night there were 6 people at a table for 8 including us...and were told that no one was at the other 2seat the previous night. We requested that friends be put at our table and again was told no....the table was full....... we spend 10 nights alone at a table for 8. The Matre De Albert Noversa would walk by each night and ask the diners how everything was. He could see we were alone.....did he not think.....I should try to put them at another table. Or just to lazy or could care less... certainly Not doing his job. I put a note in the suggestion box on board. I HOPE SOMEONE READS IT and that it does not happen to another couple. Makes me question going on another Princess cruise. Read Less

This was our fifth Princess cruise, and our second on the Ruby. EMBARKATION: We took the Princess transfer from LAX and arrived at the terminal around 11:30. We had about a 15 minute wait in line to check in. Since we were still Ruby level for this cruise, we didn’t have priority boarding, but we only waited another 20 minutes before our boarding group was called. We ate lunch in the Da Vinci dining room, and our cabin was ready for us at 1:00 PM. Our luggage showed up a little later, not sure of the time since we were out exploring. CABIN: Baja Deck B521. This was our first time in an interior cabin. Good location, quiet. Clean, not spacious but enough room for the two of us. The bed was extremely comfortable—great upgrade from the old foam egg crate solution. The motion-detecting night light at the base of the desk was handy. Our steward Manuel kept everything clean and tidy. (A tip if you use the new TV: you have to watch the opening safety video all the way to the end before you are able to change the channel. If you stop in the middle of the video, when you turn on the TV again, the video will start from the beginning. This was a feature we hadn’t experienced on our last cruise.) SHIP: I saw somewhere that they added extra cabins when the Ruby was in dry dock—I don’t know if that’s accurate, but the ship certainly felt more crowded than when we sailed in Feb. 2018. The safety muster was more chaotic than in the past. There were lines for afternoon tea and for the pub lunch in the Crown Grill, but they weren’t too bad if you’re patient. The ship has been refurbished and we noticed certain things: new carpeting in the stateroom hallways is very nice, but we miss the old color scheme that signaled whether you were on the port or starboard side. The new beds are great—we slept quite soundly. The service desk was very helpful when we asked about a missing OBC. They contacted the home office and were able to resolve the mystery, and the credit appeared on our statement before we docked in Vancouver. DINING: We had the early seating for traditional dining in Botticelli, and I have to say I preferred when the seating started later, at 5:45. A 5:00 seating is too early. Dinner was excellent every night, and the food was well-prepared. Everything was fresh and the portions were right-sized. Our server, Arren, and his assistant, Francis, were helpful and attentive, and remembered our preferences each night. We ate breakfast and lunch in the dining room several days, and in the Caribe buffet on the others. I prefer the breakfast menu in the dining room but the service was inconsistent and slow at times (we missed the start of our CC M&M because breakfast ran long). The staff seemed overwhelmed by the crowd. We ate dinner only once in the Horizon and I was not impressed by the selection of food. We purchased the coffee package and had great service from the baristas at the International Court. We were put off by the new up-sell items on the dinner menu, offering “Crown Grill” steaks, etc. We miss having the afternoon happy hour/“Buy one, get one drink for $1” that used to accompany the trivia game in Explorers Lounge. That was always a great social activity and encouraged passengers to mingle and form teams. Apparently other passengers miss it too—the afternoon trivia games were not as well attended as in the past. ENTERTAINMENT: We enjoyed all of the evening shows. We had seen the comic Carlos Oscar on a previous cruise, and he was great as usual. He performed two nights. The musical guest Tricia Kelly is a talented vocalist and does wonderful impressions. The magician Julien Losa performed in Club Fusion and he was very funny. The updated “Colors of the World” benefited from its new staging and musical selections. The new production “Once upon a Dream” was fun and a bit campy. The Princess singers and dancers certainly work hard to entertain. There were some fun evening activities in the Piazza, and we especially enjoyed the “Dancing with the Staff” competition. The line dancing in Explorers Lounge was another fun activity and was well-attended. The cruise director’s staff did an admirable job getting passengers engaged, more so than on our past Princess cruises. DISEMBARKATION: We chose walk-off because we were staying in Vancouver for a few days. The disembarkation seemed rather chaotic but we were able to skirt around the crowds and exit the ship. Inside the terminal at Vancouver, there was a bit of a wait for customs. All in all, the Ruby looks great after her recent refurbishment, the staff was helpful and friendly, and this was a great cruise. Read Less

One nice surprise was that the excellent speed of MedallionNet allowed us to watch the new episode of Game of Thrones on a tablet. The only crowd problems were at the Princess Theater, where you had to arrive at least 1/2 hour before showtime to get a decent seat although it was easier for the later 10 p.m. shows, at elevators, and at the gangway to exit the ship when only one was being used. Speaking of shows, comedian AJ Jamal was absolutely hilarious at both shows during the week. Cruise Director Matt O was exceptionally entertaining and seemed to be everywhere; don't miss him when he is in charge of games in the Princess Live room. We thought the production show Colors of the World was just okay, but really enjoyed Encore. Our A-327 mini-suite was nice but the room attendant was just okay. Anytime dining at the Symphony Dining Room ranged from very good to average. Some favorite meals were beef medallions, pork,fried chicken, and the available everyday salmon. For the second Princess cruise in a row, the lobster tail during the second formal night was not that good. Breakfast here was not nearly as good as at the Horizon Court buffet, although sharing a table was a plus. One side of the huge buffet area always offered more dishes than the side more forward on the ship. Sabatinis had excellent service and food, definitely a cut above the MDR; we loved the artichoke souffle, pot roast pasta, lobster 3-way, veal shank, and tira misu. The Crown Grill was a disappointment, being adjacent to the busy and noisy Wheelhouse Bar. Although the service, lobster tail dinner, side dishes, and dessert were excellent, the rib eye steak was very thin and not particularly tasty. The International Cafe was excellent for coffees, desserts, and small plates. The casino allows smoking in one side section, resulting in the entire room and adjacent areas outside smelling. We would definitely like to sail on this larger class of ship again, will look for cruises with the Medallion system, and hope to experience Matt O' Brien again. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it ended up in Barcelona, after visiting the Azores, Madeira, Morocco, Seville, and Malaga. We had cruised on the Emerald a year earlier and were happy to see improvements (it had recently come from drydock). The upgrades in carpet, wall, flat screen TVs, and the buffet and bars on top were good. We were disappointed they had not yet fully implemented the new internet or on-demand TV. The internet was still terrible. I understand they expect to have those upgrades done by August. We had a mini-suite, as we had before. It was the same as before except for the TV upgrade. It was fine. However, the sofa was old, worn, stained and uncomfortable. Time for a replacement! I have loved Princess beds but this one felt too soft. (and I like soft beds)--time for a mattress replacement, I think. We felt food was a bit better than a year earlier. The pizza, source of endless debate was quite a bit better than the year before. Husband's theory is new, hotter pizza oven. It's still not top gourmet quality but was much better than last voyage. We still love the International Cafe. As always, nice tasty snacks and treats. They were even keeping the almond croissants warm in the oven (so much better that way). There is still too much blatant up selling for my taste, although it is reduced from in the past. The cruise tours were excellent. We often stick with Princess because they seem to have great itineraries and this was no exception. I forget her name but there were excellent destination lectures from a British woman, which were broadcast on TV. They were very well-done. Had been on Royal Princess five years ago and it was wonderful. Also, Princess Cruises seems to be the only cruise line with self-service laundry on each deck. -Check-in at Port Everglades was chaotic. Different agents told us to go to different places. -Luggage took almost 6 hours to come to our cabin. -Before we left home, Princess agent told us unlimited email was $139.99 and we had to buy this service on board. When on board, we were charged $169.99 - $30 extra. Ship’s internet manager “Dan” refunded this overcharge after we complained. -Took three visits to Customer Service desk to get our computers set up with ship's WiFi. Repeated efforts and no phone answer (on hold 10 minutes then gave up) at Customer Service desk. -Internet down all day (5 May). We requested and received one day refund. -Machine in laundry that sells tokens was broken—reported 5 and 6 May. Finally fixed 7 May. -One of the main reasons we chose Princess over other cruise lines was availability of self-service laundry. With thousands of passengers and only perhaps a dozen machines, demand was high and machines were often unavailable. To further complicate problem, management decided to open laundry only from 8 am-8 pm, with limited hours. Solution – keep laundry open 24 hours/day to meet high demand. -Shore excursions offered us a tour of the Royal Palace in Rabat during Casablanca port call but we left the ship so late (tardy) that the palace was closed by the time we reached it in Rabat. At my request, shore excursion director sent me a letter of apology and a 50 % refund. -Ship's entertainment was painfully loud, causing me and many others to walk out at what could have been enjoyable. Good Cruise but major work needed on embarkation and disembarkation. The current processes while in port are cumbersome and lead to long lines and long waits to return to the ship. One of the re-embarkation security stations actually brought cruisers back on board in the middle of Crooners Bar. Security stations when returning to the ship are undermanned with the line stopping each time someone needed to be patted down since the person conducting the pat downs was also running the xray machines. Customs review was a TOTAL DISASTER and no officers seemed to be managing the process. We were told to report at 10 a.m. but it was not until nearly 11 a.m. until we reached customs agents. There are only 3 agents for 3,200 customers. There did not appear to be anyone running the process and the process was a debacle at best. It is unfortunate that as one of the last events onboard the ship would be memory of the horrors of going through customs with ship personnel in total disarray. Casino has heavy smell of smoking. Need to discontinue the cigar bar and repaint this area to get rid of the heavy scent of cigarettes and cigars. We normally use the casino but not this trip. On the upside we found the cabin, dining room and other staff members to be a joy and greatly enhanced our experience. Our thanks to them. Read Less

The Island Princess is a great ship to find your way. we had some rough seas one day but we barely felt it. Embarkation went well and smoothly. we were welcomed on board and went to the atrium until the cabins were ready which was a wait of about 30 minutes. when we got to our cabin we found it spotless and our luggage was outside our door. We had a wonderful lunch in the main dining room. Muster was at 3:30 and I love that we no longer have to lug life vests. One thing I did't like was a lot of deck space was removed as was a show lounge so they could add more cabins to the ship. However, despite the higher number of passengers, the ship rarely felt crowded except during show times and many trivia games. Club class dining had impeccable service. Many of the meals were very good but sometimes they weren't. the quality of meat has gone down. We had the best cabin steward. He was like a ghost but had our cabin refreshed twice a day and happily fulfilled any requests. You have to be careful with the ratings on tours. One "Easy" tour had more walking than I could do and I ended up spending most of it on the bus. The tour desk wasn't very considerate of physically challenged people. Favorite ports included the Panama Canal and Fuerte Amador, Punta Arenas Costa Rica, Puerto Vallarta, San Francisco, and Victoria BC. in Huatulco, there was a horrendous walk from the ship and two three wheel scooters that you could squeeze three people in to get to the shops and tour buses. I think after four times through the canal, it will be a long time before i do this again. Read Less

The embarkation experience in Sydney was probably our worst experience of embarkation on any cruise. There seemed to be no organisation, and the only guidance was by other passengers, as there seemed to be a great lack of staff around. When we chose this cruise we knew that there were a lot of sea days ahead of us, so we were prepared to entertain ourselves for long stretches of time. While they had many activities, there could have been more variety. We enjoyed the ports as we had not been to most of them. The shore excursions were way too expensive for us, so we were able to find local providers at almost all ports. Some ports were a little overrated, such as Los Angeles, where the ship docked at San Pedro and with a 3.00pm all aboard deadline, there was not sufficient time to get into LA and see anything and return in time. The dining was very good, accommodating my dietary requirements. There did seem to be less general variety in the buffet compared to other cruises we have been on. The wait staff were to be highly commended, as were all the staff onboard - friendly and helpful and dedicated to ensuring everyone had a great experience. The entertainment was mostly quite good, but not as spectacular as we had experienced on other cruises. The other passengers were respectful and well behaved, with no loud noise to interrupt a peaceful night's sleep. The bed was super comfy - it felt like a cosy nest. It was great to be part of the Cruise Critic Roll Call, so we were able to arrange some activities together to get to know others. All in all it was a great cruise where we met a lot of likeminded people. Read Less

Like the itinerary with lots of Sea days to rest and recharge. Also got to see Darwin Australia, Kaohsiung(Taiwan) besides the usual Sydney, Brisbane, Singapore, Phu My(Vietnam) and Hong Kong. Ship was big, and nice. Room was a mini suite(upgraded from a premium balcony), very comfortable, Excellent room service. Sea was calm until South China sea. Mostly Australian on the ship with lots of Asian from Australia. US pax are the minority. Lots of Fancy, high end stores, on board. Too expensive! Piazza was large, busy daily with all kinds of activities. Casino was fun on the Penny machines, not much table activities throughout the cruise(except for Black Jack Tournament), feel sorry for the casino attendants standing at their table side all morning, afternoon and waiting for table players to play! Love the Asian exercise equipment at the aft of the ship for stretching and muscle toning, very simple but effective! Read Less

This was my second repositioning cruise on the Majestc. The first one was from Shanghai to Sydney in Aug/Sep 2018. Cabin: On this current occasion I traveled with friends (a couple). We had adjacent balcony cabins on deck 14. We chose this cruise because we wanted a cruise that terminated in Hong Kong. My cabin was comfortable except for the very soft pillows that Princess now has. Also, there was a strong smell of stale urine in the bathroom. This was also the case on the earlier cruise when I had an inside cabin. Despite several attempts on both occasions by the cabin stewards to remove the smell, it lingered. Dining: The food overall was very good. We had anytime dining, and ate in the dining room sometimes. We also ate at the International Marketplace, Harmony Restaurant, Crown Grill, Alfredo's, La Mer, and the Noodle Bar, and we did the Chef's Table dining. I thought the Crown Grill on this ship was the best of any ship. The food was excellent and cooked to perfection. I didn't care for the food in the Harmony Restaurant. One of the dishes was very nice but the others were rather bland. La Mer was OK. We ate at Alfredo's quite a few times. Like the food there. Had quite a few lunches at the Noodle Bar. The Chef's Table was not as good as some I've had in the past; more emphasis on presentation rather than flavour. And the food in both the dining rooms and the International Marketplace was pretty good. Ship: I don't particularly like its design which I understand was tailored to the Chinese market. The ship lacks the bar/lounge areas which Australians, including me, seem to like, such as Wheelhouse, Explorers, Skywalkers and Crooners. There was a Crooners on the Majestic but it was the casino's high rollers room converted. Not a crowd-friendly space and tucked away in a corner next to the casino. This was also the nightclub but it didn't really work as that either. The ship has a space called Princess Live on Deck 7 midship. It's like a small theatre. It doesn't really work well for most of the events that it's used for. The seating is quite uncomfortable; there is no bar and wait staff from the nearest bar up the passage have difficulty taking orders and delivering drinks. Apart from a bench across the back of the room, there are no tables so activities like trivia and bingo are difficult there. Also, the Promenade deck walking area does not go right around the ship. It does run up both sides of the ship but it's very narrow in parts and walking is very difficult if there's anyone else in the area. The Princess Theatre has 800 seats for 3500 passengers. This meant that you'd need to get there more than half an hour before a show to have any chance of getting a seat. Most of the activities were held in the Piazza as there was really nowhere much else to have them. A couple of times when we were dining at Alfredo's (on Deck 6 in the Piazza), the music in the Piazza was so loud that we couldn't have a conversation. The Majestic has an adults area on Deck 17 called the Hollywood Observatory. It's an indoor area that has a good sized pool, a bar, lots of lounges and other seating, include cabanas which can be closed off for privacy. A lovely area except for two things - some recorded birdsong which is really unnecessary and gets on your nerves after a while; and the fact that the whole area is air conditioned. That's OK if you've gone there just to read or play games, etc, but it makes it very cold when you come out of the pool! Entertainment: The entertainment was very good overall. Some excellent performers, and the production shows were great. Lots of activities. We never had trouble finding something enjoyable to do. Service: The service on the ship, as always, was excellent, although I noticed that there seemed to be less wait staff than usual in some areas. This meant that there were sometimes delays in getting vacated tables cleared, or getting a drink. This was my fourth cruise with Captain Dino Sagani at the helm. While his daily noon navigation reports were always informative, I've never seen him or his officers out and about the ship other than at official functions. Ports: While the number of ports was small (only 6 including Hong Kong), there was plenty to do at each. I found the destination presentation for Kaohsiung to be very helpful in getting a feel for the logistics of the place. The only Princess shore excursion I did was to Long Tan and Nui Dat in Vietnam. So much Australian military history in that part of the world. We were privileged to participate in a short memorial service while at the Long Tan Memorial. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. Would I go again on the Majestic? Probably not. I don't care for that class of ship. I much prefer the Grand or Gem class. Read Less

This was a short 3 day cruise from LA to Vancouver. It is spring break so there were lots of young people and kids onboard, many celebrating special events like birthdays. We dined in both the Crown Grill and Share and the food was great. Service in the main dining room and the food seemed the usual Princes approach. There was concern expressed by someone that since the ship is heading to dry dock in Victoria that there would be less staff and poor food supply but that was certainly not the case. The staff told us that during the 3 weeks in dry dock, their jobs continue, as they must serve the 1000 construction workers who take up residence on the ship and work 24 hrs a day to complete the dry dock tasks. The only difference is that their days are shorter. On another note, Princess has made a decision to remove all the barrel chairs from the balcony and ocean view staterooms. I find this to be a ridiculaous move as do many others. I had disussed my concern with corporate relations and was told that if I ask for chai, I will get it. Many people on Cruise Critic had indicated that they had asked their stateroom steward and had been told that a chair was not available any longer. I did not ask the steward. I went to the Passenger Service desk soon after we boarded and asked for a chair. I happily got one within 1/2 hour of asking. I do have a bit of a caveat, though.This ship is heading to dry dock and maybe the few chairs that they may have available on board right now might disappear once in dry dock. Read Less

First impression entering the Piazza, was wow. Very impressive. But the biggest thing that lets it down is the layout. The Market place is so confusing, it’s set out in 2 sections a bistro and buffet. To get your food you have to negotiate .different areas. For example I wanted toasted Banana bread, I went to the counter with the Banana bread, then had to take it to another area to get it toasted then again to get butter. The Market place seating is divided by many screens, it feels a bit closed in. The Princess theatre is a good size but entering and exiting is a problem as the aisles are one person wide, which causes big problems with everyone trying to leave. The future cruise desk and captains circle club are in the same very small room, with only one staff member looking after each area. Causes major cuing. For a ship with 3500 passengers you would think they would have more room and more staff to handle the volume. Our cabin was excellent, we had a Club class mini suite, very big, plenty of room to sit, or eat a meal, very good and big balcony with table chairs and sun lounges. Embarkation and disembarkation was very good, very well organised. The entertainment was good with the imported artist, but the Princess entertainment was the same as any other ship. If you been on a few Princess cruises no need to go and see them. The crew where mainly very good, but there was a lot of Chinese crew that did not seem to want to serve anyone except Chinese passengers. I asked to use the Karaoke room and was told it was only for the Asian cruise, by one Chinese crew member, then told to go and see, the Internet cafe person, then told to see Customer services, who are the ones I saw first so I didn’t bother. I would not go on the Majestic Princess if there was an alternative ship. Read Less

Excellent value for a suite - liked the itinerary - wanted to experience a new ship. Good overall but we did not like the mattress in the suite. I suspect it is rubber based as it always seemed to be hot. Club class dining is excellent with no waiting during anytime dining. Enrichment Lectures were lacking. Only one American based speaker (most of the PAX were Australian) and he joined part way through the cruise. No others. Captain Dino's announcements were all good but interaction with officers was non-existent - unfortunate - it happens sometimes. Had a look at pricing on a similar cruise (SYD-SIN) next year and note the price has doubled for the same number of days, compared with what we paid. At this price we will probably pass for that itinerary. We enjoyed the cruise and it was great value, an excellent ship. We will sail on her again. Read Less

Our friends asked us to join them with other family members. The food was excellent and the cruise staff very friendly and accommodating. The Captain (Tubo) was all over the ship, greeting guests on a daily basis. The entertainment was wonderful. Only draw back the theater, unfortunately, was not large enough to accommodate all the guests. The tours, both ship sponsored or private arrangements, were wonderful. All in all, Princess Cruise Lines did a great job, including embarkation and disembarkation at both ports. I can't say enough about the dining room staff and food taste and presentation. It was all good! The outdoor Pizza Venue, Ice Cream Corner and Hamburgers and Hot Dogs were also very good and well prepared. The Pools and Jacuzzi were also well maintained and the Bars were always within site and the staff always friendly and available. The Tender Service was well organized as was. Disembarkation at the (6) Ports we arrived at. That's about it. Read Less
