We love the Royal. We met interesting people at diner. Particular an Irish Couple, who were very good Bridge players. We played every afternoon. The shows were just OK, not great. The best of the entertainment was A,J. Clarke. A singer and piano player who played songs from the 50’s and 60’s. I loved him. I saw him almost every day. I did not like the comedians. Not very funny, jokes a little stupid. The singers were decent. Princess’s shows we’re good and they tried real hard. The food was a C. selections were horrible at times. Maitre D, waiter and assistant were excellent. They tried very hard . There were days when my wife and I had nothing to choose from. Shore excursions were decent not exceptional. On one excursion bus driver left us a 1/2 mile from restaurant and had to climb uphill. I was totally out of breath due to asthma. Host and bus driver did not care and I felt abanded 200 yards fron bus. Need I say more about excursions. Room to far from dining room. Lost weight with all the walking. Trying Royal in February. Most disappointing was food and excursions. If this trip not satisfactory going to try Celebrity. Read Less

Hubby and I were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and wanted to do something fun and relaxing. We've done several transatlantic crossings in the past and looked forward to taking another. Our last ta the Canary Islands stop was cancelled so we were excited with this itinerary and two stops there. We've cruised on the Royal several times before so knew the ship and with the exception of a few things like the it a lot. We started in Barcelona and only chose to be there one day before the cruise. I was very active on the CC roll call for this cruise so through that we were able to connect with other passengers and took advantage of a bus transport from our hotel to the port. Embarkation was one of the best we have ever experienced. It was well organized, extremely fast and we were on the ship in a short period of time. Because the Royal has a large spread out buffet area there were no lines or long waits to grab a bite to eat around 1. Our cabin was clean and in a convenient location. There is always plenty of storage on the Princess ships and the closet is tucked away in its own little hallway which is nice. Our luggage arrived in a couple of hours so we were unpacked and organized well before our setting sail around 6. Our stateroom stewardess Lizbeth was so helpful and eager to help us with anything. She remained a jewel throughout the cruise. Our bar set up wasn't there when we arrived and didn't get set up until close to 6 as there were so many elites onboard they simply got behind. Since they have put the center stairs back in that helped eliviate some of the elevator traffic and back ups but it still remained a problem at times throughout the cruise. The elevators would go right by you even though you had pushed the button. This happened a lot. Also people felt they had to shove and jam into an elevator making it annoying to have people breathing all over you especially when many were coughing and sneezing. Many people have no elevator manners. We had early assigned dining and with one exception that was great. Our waiter and assistant were fabulous. Our second night we arrived a little late and our table was given away. When I explained to the head waiter that our cruise cards said 6pm and we weren't that late we were told dinner was at 5:30 and our cards were wrong. I told him my card should say 5:30 then and that my table had better be there the rest of the cruise or we would be most unhappy. It was. The food was consistently good and there was always a nice variety of things to chose from. On our anniversary we ate in the Crown Grill and it was extremely good. We attended a few production shows, some of which we had seen on previous cruises and others were okay. I didn't think the singers were all that great frankly. The individual acts were pretty good. The lecturer Ted McCourt was really interesting and we didn't miss a single one of his lectures. He packed the theater every day. The six ports of call were all really interesting. We took several Princess tours and they were very good. We also took a couple of private ones arranged through the roll call and they were also good. We loved the Canary Islands the best. So interesting and really different. The casino smelled of smoke a lot and the machines didn't pay anything. We gave our donation a couple of times and then said the heck with it. As usual there are things always being sold and pitched on the cruise. Over the years this has gotten more intrusive and frankly annoying to me but some people love it. To me it's the same stuff all of the time. Then there's the art auctions and pictures. Again annoying to me. Princess serves the best pizza at sea. I've had pizza on five other lines and there's is far the best. The free Alfredos restaurant is a little gem and the food is so good. Great place for lunch. The international cafe is another little gem where you can grab a great bite to eat any time day or night. Horizon court buffet always had a great selection of food and for the most part it was always quite good. Eggs and other hot items were often cold in the morning and no one knows what an over easy egg is unless you eat breakfast in the dining room. Coffee is mediocre unless you get it in the dining room or international cafe. There it is very good. I found there to be a language issue throughout the ship and especially at customer service. Although most of the crew spoke some English it was often limited and understanding questions or requests didn't always get translated properly. The balconies on this ship are very tiny but for our purposes it wasn't a problem. I do miss the promenade deck a lot as it is always a nice place to take a morning stroll. Things are too crowded or windy up on the walking/jogging track. We never saw the captain as he seemed to keep a low profile as opposed to other cruises where the captain made himself quite available and visible. Because there were so many elites onboard - we were told around 1400 - we didn't even bother to attend the captain circle cocktail party or use the free laundry as it was very slow and they had some problems. Did appreciate the passenger self laundry though. The crew was very friendly though with the exception of a few scrooges. Don't know who is in charge of the satellite tv but they gave us a lot of European sports when most of the passengers were American. When we were off the coast of the US and it was college football Saturday we had cricket, tennis and poker. Went to the customer service deck to complain and requested some American college games as we had a few of those when we were still over in Spain. Within fifteen minutes we had at least one station with college ball. There was always something g going on activity wise on the ship. The average age on particular cruise was probably around 70 so the dynamics were a little different than say a seven day Caribbean trip. The 3 pm buy one get one for a dollar happy hour was really popular and it was always hard to find a place to sit. Perhaps a larger venue might be needed. Disembarkation was very organized and again one of the fastest and easiest we've ever experienced. Overall we had a great trip and a great cruise. The weather was perfect, the seas calm as glass and it wasn't all we hoped it to be. Read Less

Never saw the entertainment team really, as when onboard we were on top deck and they never done any entertainment that we saw or read in the itinery up there. The band 'atomic' were excellent but only did one sail away on top deck.... the weather sometimes might have influenced why they undertook their sessions indoors though. All the shows in the theatre were excellent, the entertainment team only did one show and were nothing great. Max Hixon the singer and guitar guy, was amazing. Lots of people seemed not to care about their attire in themselves in general, but that could be due to too many onboard of one country... we are all very different and manners seemed to have been left behind, which was bizarre as there were more older generation than younger onboard. The beds and cabins were very dark and uncomfortable, but not in your room long enough. They only have balcony and above or inside cabins, no outside cabins. Wouldnt necessarily go again with princess, as so many other companies out there If you have booked though, you will enjoy :-) Read Less

Our first trip on the Royal, but we cruised three times on the pretty much identical Regal Princess. We did not and do not have a thing to complain about or any regrets about taking this cruise at all!! The ship, and we spent time in 95% of the ships public spaces we always very neat and clean and we always found everything to be in good working order. We booked a deluxe balcony on deck 15, mid ship (we enjoying being up higher and would recommend it to other folks. We did an interior on one of the cruises on the Regal princess and found we enjoy the balcony a lot. The cabin was very comfortable indeed, always clean and was well maintained. It will be nice when all the princess ships get the new beds, we are looking forward to that. We do go on quite a few excursions, but we do enjoy sleeping in and relaxing as well. We are on vacation after all...... The dining options on Princess are many, we enjoy good Italian at Sabatini's, great grill at the crown, great options and choices in the Anytime dining rooms for a more upscale experience and the Horizon court and Bistro, We found the food to be pretty darn good. We have traveled around the world many times and we feel Princess does a real good job with dining options. There are many different on board entertainment options and we found most all to be of great quality. We also found the service overall to be excellent. The staff was always friendly and very helpful. It helps if you approach with a smile folks..... The crew is attending to 3500 passengers. it may take a moment... We have been on over thirty shore excursions with Princess all around the world. No gripes what so ever!! Just recommend you really read the details of the excursions and compare all of the different ones they offer. All of the options are not for everyone. Relax, be on vacation Read Less

We boarded the ship easily and was really surprised and pleased our room was ready. Rome, Naples, Sicily, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, Corsica, Toulon, Barcelona, Toulon, Dlorence, Katakolon, Mykonos, Santorini, Kotor, Naples, Rome. We booked this holiday as a 21 day Mediterranean cruise. When we got on the ship we discovered it was what they call a back to back cruise and we were currently on a 10 day cruise. We bought the beverage package for 10 days (couldn't buy 21 day package) at a cost of USA$52 a day (excluding 15% gratuities). We were assured the price was not going to go up on the next leg of the cruise. Yep...you guessed it. The price increased to USA$60 a day. We didn't bother getting it again. We were allowed to purchase a bottle of wine per person at each port so we drank in our room or balcony before we went out in the evening. I had booked a ship excursion to Kotor before we boarded the ship. We had decided not to go on the excursion after all so we went to customer service to cancel the booking. The assistant could not find the booking so assured us I obviously didn't book it afterall. I accepted that thinking I had had a senior moment. Imagine my surprise 11 days later when we got a notice to advise to meet for our excursion at 8am the next day and USA$200 had been added to my account. Back to customer service I go to be advised I had to come to the desk at 7.30am to cancel. I told them I had tried to cancel it on 20th Sept when we boarded and was advised "that was a different cruise". Long story short, I stood my ground and would not leave the desk until I had in writing that the excursion was cancelled and I would be refunded the fee. I had to remind Sonja several times that I am the customer, Princess made the mistake, please fix it. They did. Thank you We weren't overly impressed with the daily activities on board and was pleased that most days were spent off the ship. Sea day activities were also boring. Our highlight was the daily live concert on the big screen at 5.30pm on the Lido deck. Pink, Elton John, Billy Joel, Anni Lenox to name a few. It was a great way to get into the mood for the evening. Sadly. After the first 10 days, they played the same concerts over again which was really annoying. We enjoyed anytime dining. The food was nice but it was always only warm. Obviously with the amount of people to feed it can't be helped. Our wait staff worked really hard and were usually chatty and happy that you have had a great day. Our favourite restaurant was Alfredos. The food was always delicious, hot and served on hot plates. The staff were extremely handsome, friendly and happy to serve you. We enjoyed the food in Horizon Court...a little bit to much I think. Happy hour in Club 6 was a nice touch. The drinks and snacks were always lovely. CASINO SMOKE: I wish Princess would be grown up enough to abolish smoking in the Casino. Just because the smoking area is only on one side doesn't stop the smell from engulfing the rest of the area and ship. You can even smell the smoke on the next floor up. Everyone holds their breath when you have to walk through to get to the theatre. They did have a couple of No Smoking nights which actually made a huge difference. We made some wonderful friends on cruise critic roll call before the cruise and were really excited to meet them in person once we boarded the ship. We all got on really well and enjoyed many private tours, fun times and drinks together. Overall, we had a great time. Read Less

Once we decided on the Mediterranean, this itinerary and ship worked well for us. Although I wasn't excited about sailing on such a large ship I knew it would offer more variety of on-board activities, entertainment, shops, eateries and deck areas. The ship was very nice but we both missed the motion of a smaller ship such as Island Princess. It was intimidating for me to try and find my way around. However, we were never really aware of the number of passengers, because the size of the vessel accommodated the population well. We reserved four excursions prior to sailing, and they were good. We enjoyed the spa a number of times. The Allegro dining room was great. The staff were very attentive and personable. The food was served piping hot, and there was a good variety of menu choices. We usually went to Horizon Court and Horizon Bistro for breakfast and lunch, and they were so-so. Sometimes it was hard to find a table, and the entire staff seemed slow and disinterested. The buffet food was not warm enough and clearly had been sitting out too long. Room service was very nice, and punctual. We had a mid-ship mini-suite which was large with a nice balcony. The cabin steward was great. The carpeting was badly stained and needed to be replaced. The bathroom smelled like mold. We had priority embarkation and debarkation which was a breeze - very nice. Cruising Europe was on my bucket list after 35 plus cruises on 17 different cruise lines to six of the seven continents over the years. Princess had the best itinerary, called the Grand Mediterranean, which was actually two cruises back-to-back for 21 days total. I had cruised Princess before and liked it, but truthfully only chose them due to the itinerary and price. But from now on Princess is definitely my first choice! I traveled alone and booked very early, so I got a great price on a deluxe balcony cabin. Close to sailing the price for that category was almost double!! The Royal is by far the biggest ship I've sailed, and I was apprehensive about getting overwhelmed by the size. Instead I loved every minute on the ship and never felt uncomfortable sailing solo. The 3560 passenger ship is gorgeous and very spacious. I never had a problem finding a place to sit either indoors or out on deck. There were lots of places to be more private scattered around the ship, including an outdoor area beside the shops that was a small deck with tables and chairs where you could often be alone. The Princess EZ Air program was great. They booked me in business class on my preferred airline, KLM, for about half the retail price. And the flight is flexible/refundable until 45 days out. I loved the flight to Amsterdam and passengers were met, escorted to the bus, and taken to the pier very efficiently. Embarkation was incredibly efficient and quick. They had a small army there checking us in and I doubt I spent more than 10 minutes in line. My luggage was delivered to the cabin very quickly. The food, to me, was pretty typical of many lines and nothing to write home about. The soups were generally excellent as were the pastas. The main dishes varied from okay to really good. Some of the meats were tough. The dining experience is no longer important to me. I would rate just this one category 8 on a scale of 10. Everything else was a 10!! The free pizza/pasta alternative restaurant Alfredo's was very good. The alternative Italian restaurant Sabatini's was excellent and well-worth the $25 surcharge. The service here was top-flight, as was the food. I did not try the Crown Grill for steaks etc. but others told me it too was excellent. I did have sushi twice at the Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar. The portions were small but the price was reasonable and the quality of the fish excellent. The design of the buffet restaurants Horizon Court and Bistro and the Pastry Shop was the best I've ever experienced on a ship. The passenger flow was easy, there was never a line or a wait for anything, the selection and variety was excellent and the quality was very good, if not great. Also I never had trouble finding a table even during the busiest times here. Having the desserts in a separate area called the Pastry Shop was a genius idea. Service for coffee, iced tea etc was always prompt and friendly. I was very impressed with the buffet. The entertainment was great. The theater has excellent seating and sound (but loud!). Lots of special effects. I saw a superb violinist (who would think a violinist could fill a 950 person theater and get a standing ovation - but he did!). There was a magician who was good but not my thing. The production shows were outstanding. In the lounge the entertainment was also good. One night I saw an Irish comedian there who was the best ever. And of course there were the usual singers and other shows. There were lots of activities during the day. I enjoyed just watching the dance classes, all held in the main Piazza. The excellent cruise staff made the sessions great fun and the Piazza was always packed with dancers. You didn't need a partner and everyone was having a great time. Same for the events in the Piazza like '50's night or the Oktoberfest or the tower of champagne. All great fun. I also went to several game shows in the Princess LIve theater and again everyone really enjoyed it, whether you joined a team or just watched. The cruise staff made it fun. It was fun to look at the paintings in the art gallery and attend the auctions. The internet cafe almost always had a computer available and many folks took advantage of the expert during his on duty hours there. Some people complained about the passenger service desk lines, but I never had to wait long there and found the staff very friendly and helpful. Same with the shore excursion desk. The library was tiny and only a few people used it, but with today's e-readers I don't think you need a big one. The shops were nice although I only shopped for some essentials and a souvenir or two. There always seemed to be room in the pools and hot tubs and always a deck chair available. Lots of folks liked the Movies Under the Stars (which also played during the day). I went to the fountain show on pool deck twice and thought it was spectacular, if only 5 minutes long. I thought it was too bad more folks didn't come to see it. All the bars and bar staff were great. I always got prompt service with a smile. I also enjoyed playing Trivia in Club 6 with the cruise staff and the Sea Walk that extends out over the ocean on deck 16 was great. I walked on it every time I was on that deck. I also appreciated the adults only pool area for some peace and quiet. I didn't use the spa or fitness center. I always took Princess shore excursions, especially since I was traveling solo. The staff did an incredible job of coordinating the tenders and getting huge crowds off the ship quickly and efficiently at our 3 tender ports. I was very impressed with how they handled getting all the tours off the ship and back on, considering they had to scan each person's cruise card as they left and again as they came back aboard, plus scan all their belongings each time. They were all great tours. I did a few less popular ones, like visiting the medieval town of Lucca, Italy. That was a great tour. I skipped going to Rome in favor of Orvieto, Italy, which was a great tour. The Duomo church there is beautiful beyond description. My day in Capri was interesting but it is really, really crowded and the bus rides to Capri and Anacapri are hair-raising and you are crammed into tiny buses. Greece was okay and looked pretty much like the photos in all the cruise brochures. The islands were mostly too rocky and barren for my taste. The tour to Herculaneum (also buried in the 79 AD Vesuvius eruption) was great and highly recommended as an alternative to Pompeii. I liked Dubrovnik, Croatia very much. The old town tour is fascinating. My favorite port was Kotor, Montenegro. It was on the itinerary for both cruises and I was delighted to get to go there twice. My tours of Cavtat, old town Kotor, Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks are all highly recommended. The approach in and sailing out of Kotor is down a narrow 17-mile fjord-like arm of the Adriatic. It takes two hours and was wonderful. There are picturesque towns all along the way, at the base of towering mountains. The sunset sailings were magic. I thought the value for money was excellent, especially considering the price I paid to have a deluxe balcony cabin to myself as a single. I never felt uncomfortable being alone. The crew were all great and all friendly. I have settled on Princess for the remainder of my cruising days and already have 3 more cruises booked, on the Ruby, Emerald, and Royal! Read Less

This was to be our 5th cruise and our 4th cruise line we've been on, and we were excited, having heard great things about Princess and their high food quality, the more adult crowd, and we liked the layout of the Royal. I like to start out with the Good first, so without a doubt, the staff on this cruise was absolutely THE best we have ever experienced. Everyone we encountered was "genuinely" friendly and greeted you, and not with the standard frozen-smiles we've all certainly seen. Our steward Patune was stellar, the best ever, with his level of helpfulness and actual CARING about our comfort, 5 stars for this guy! The ship was kept immaculately clean, everything was under control, our fellow passengers were good, and all in all it was a "quiet" cruise. We loved the choice of music concerts shown on the big screen in the afternoons, and the movies at night were not only very current, but also some classics were mixed in. For the football crowd, the Sunday Night game was on, and they bring out very thick, comfortable chair pads and blankets every night for the on-deck viewing activities. Very nice. And again, top shelf treatment by ALL staff was the shining star here. The entertainment was sometimes very very good, and others not so much, but that seems to be the norm between most cruiselines. We quite enjoyed the fun trivia shows with the cruise staff in the Princess Live, and the ship's singers/dancers. So, the Bad now, and it was without a doubt the worst detriment to our cruise, and that was the food. We are generally dining room every night folks, but it proved to be just of ordinary quality, the meats were dry, and the menu from night to night had very little variance and imagination, and the meal took close to 1-1/2 hours. So we ended up being buffet diners almost every night, but that was no respite either. And here too, it was the meats that were perpetually over-cooked day after day that became a real puzzler. What was the chef's aim, we were wondering? Meats generally need to be a tad under-cooked when they are to be under warming lights for long periods of time, but virtually every night I dined on lifeless, TOUGH meat, and the same tired array of side dishes, and this went on for the entire 11 days. And by the way, for reference, my wife says that my palate is that of an "ordinary schmoe" so I am not a culinary snob at ALL, I am rather quite QUITE easy to please. But even the breakfast was subpar, scrambled egg pans had large excesses of WATER in them, gross, large amounts of toast was put out in metal pans, and was hard as a rock quickly under those lights, and the Eggs Benedict looked and tasted like rubber. (In comparison, on Norwegian you can gets eggs cooked-to-order at the buffet with FRESH toast.) And typically on a longer cruise one could expect some changes in the menu, but there were remarkably few. We began to be able to memorize where each thing was, as they were there every night in the same spot. The hamburgers, hot dogs, and pizza on the Lido deck became dinner and the better deal more than once. The pizza was above par and quite good up there, and we ate at Alfredo's a few times, and it was great. We were told we could obtain pasta there, we did, and it and the service, again, was great. But we feel like Princess may want to look into getting a new chef or increasing his budget? But, the cooking "itself" was sub-par on a REGULAR basis, so it goes back to the chef and his kitchen. This is the only factor that may keep us from coming back to Princess, sadly. Read Less

We had booked a similar cruise 12 months ago but due to personal circumstances had to cancel, so it was great to finally be able to go as it was my first time to Europe my wife's second. This was our 7th cruise 2nd on princess We spent 3 days in Barcelona prior to cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it, Barcelona is a great city. We stayed at the Hotel Jazz which had been recommended on Cruise Critic and it was perfect. We arrived early on embarkation morning around 10am, we were one of the first there, and we were onboard around 12.15pm, very smooth process. The ship is a beautiful ship with great amenities, however I would say i found it a wee bit impersonal. On previous cruises we have met others and then seen then regularly during the cruise, and formed some great friendships. On this cruise it seemed you might meet someone once but not see them again for the rest of the cruise. I put this down to the size of the ship and number of passengers. We were in cabin A521 a mini suite which was perfect for a 21 day cruise, but the balcony was smaller than we have had on other cruise ships. Dining we avoided the buffet only eating there for breakfast once and lunch twice. but found it not well set out, we had breakfast either in the international cafe or the dining room which we enjoyed both. Because most days we had full day tours we didn't have lunch very often on the ship but I quite enjoyed the burgers from the grill by the pool. Dinner in the Dining room was good and the food was of the usual high standard we have come to expect. The entertainment was good although i thought the 2 comedians were pretty average. Also there wasn't as many Revue shows with the singers and dancers as we had seen on previous cruisers but the shows they put on were very good. Excursions: We had a mix of Independent tours and ship excursions, I would say that all but one of our independent tours were excellent, the 1 that wasn't was in Capri, but there were just too many tourists for capri to cope with most frustrating day of the trip. The ships excursions were mixed but felt many were poorly organised, next time we would book more independent tours as we felt these were cheaper and we got much better value for money. Overall a very enjoyable cruise Read Less
