The main problem was that there was insufficient water in the Elbe to cruise. Viking knew this well in advance and should have given us the opportunity to cancel and receive a refund. They also changed hotels after they confirmed our booking. Instead of the Marriott in downtown Prague, it was changed to the Corinthia in the suburbs. Not a good hotel and had to get the metro to go into Prague. Had to bus from Czech Republic to Germany to board the boat due to low water levels. Spent 4 hours total cruising the river. The rest of the time we were bussed everywhere. We had to pack and were bussed to the termination point of the cruise to transfer to the sister ship as that was stuck in the port. No compensation from Viking. they didn't even offer to comp drinks. This was our trial of Viking for future ocean and river cruising. Thy failed miserably. It was not Viking's fault that the river levels were low but they took our money KNOWING that they were not going to provide a river cruise. If we wanted a bus tour of Europe we would have booked one. Viking will never have us again as customers and I would advise people to be very wary. Read Less

So many people had recommended taking a Viking cruise and now I know why! I can't think of anything that would have made this trip more enjoyable . . . From the embarkation to the disembarkation hotel rooms everything was wonderful! The accommodations on board were VERY nice - comfy bed & pillows and I loved having my morning coffee on my veranda. The food was delicious and the wine served with the meals was wonderful. Loved that the did a German night so we could sample all sorts of German fare complete with beer and a band! Our waiters and waitresses were very attentive and I was given special attention by the chef due to my lactose intolerance. The tours were informative & I like how there are at least 2 if not 3 different tours for each port depending on how much you wanted to walk or ride. What a wonderful way to learn about history!! The scenery on the Elbe was magnificent and with the smaller river, the scenery on both shores was so close. I booked another Viking tour as soon as I got home! Read Less

My 3rd Viking River Cruise. Just booked a Viking Ocean cruise to Australia/Tasmania/New Zealand for Jan 20, 2020. I must have liked the cruise from Prague to Budapest if I'm booking another so soon. I'm not crazy about the size of the rooms, but we spend very little time acually in the room. The greatest plus on these cruises is the crew. There is nothing they won't do to make your experience excellent. The bar and wait staff work very hard and make a point to remember names and likes/dislikes. There are no broadway shows or casinos, but there is plenty to keep you busy. Everyone finds another couple onboard that you have something in common with... By the second day, you will recognize at least half the passengers and will "pair up" with one or more other couples. Most passengers are quite financially stable and most are retired. You'll have a lot in common with most if you can afford these cruises. The meals are excellent. They are not stingy with beer or wine during meals and the bar has an excellent selection of fine wines; many from the country you're traveling through. Our cabin steward was excellent and we always felt safe on board and during the daily tours. You should at least try one cruise, maybe a modest cabin and up your choices on your 2nd cruise. I really believe that you'll have fun and enjoy the people you'll meet. Read Less

We choose the Elegant Elbe because of the cities we would see, the days before and after in Prague and Berlin, and also because we wanted to see this part of Europe. Since we had already had one Viking River Cruise, we knew we wanted to cruise with them again...our first trip, two years ago was also amazing. One of the best things about cruising with Viking are the friendships we made on the trip. The meals were delicious--loved the many choices, too. At mealtimes, there was plenty of time to get acquainted with others on the boat. It was nice not having seating assignments, and also having the choice of where to eat...we enjoyed having breakfast on the Acquivet Terrace and watching the scenery as we ate. The crew members on the ship were also very accommodating---everyone made sure that all we having a good, but safe time, too. Read Less

We chose this itinerary because besides Prague, we had not been to any of the other places and had heard good things about it. The cruise itself was good, did not get to spend much time in any of the places we visited while on the boat and would have liked to have had a bit more free time on shore after the excursions. We have traveled on 2 other prior cruises with Viking and absolutely loved everything about it. This go, the food was sub-par, we were told they ran out of certain foods, like the steak on the everyday menu and would not be getting anymore. Service in the dining room was mostly non-existent, if you were served one glass or wine, beer or soda, no more was offered unless you tracked them down, or did as I did and walked over to the shelf and poured my own. For those who travel with Viking, you know how attentive the service is normally. I believe the staff in the dining room had checked out since this was the last cruise of the season. Our cabin was spotless and very comfortable, I did miss the heated tile floor, but the young lady that took care of our floor was just wonderful and very kind. The reception area was also wonderful, very friendly. Really liked the captain, he was very social the entire cruise. The excursions were absolutely fabulous. We were very impressed with the majority of them. We will be going on another cruise with Viking, just hoping to not have a repeat of the not that great of food. Read Less

We chose this cruise never having been to these parts of Europe. Our parents had done many Viking cruises and always gave them high scores. Every detail was covered and it was nice to be so well taken care of in every aspect. The food aboard was truly excellent with plenty of choices. Staff was genuinely gracious and knowledgeable. The guides on shore tours were so willing to share their passion for their places and often included little interesting tidbits to enhance the experiences. Shipboard entertainment was fun and definitely created friendships among passengers. I would go on a Viking River Cruise again. I'm not one for the large cruise ships so this was perfect. I was impressed that provisions were always made for passengers with special needs or diminished ability to walk or climb especially at Bad Schandu where there was a lot of stairs. The exercise was invigorating after indulging in the breakfast buffet! Lovely to be greeted at the airport by the Viking Cruise staff in signature red jackets. They have really covered all the details from start to finish. Read Less

Everything about Viking from the initial booking through to departure is first class all the way. What better way is there to spend 10 days being pampered, well fed with Michelin Star food in great company. We try to find fault but impossible. Again made great friends with Americans and English fellow passengers. Never short of a conversation, Trump, Brexit etc. Rik's Music Quiz was a real onboard highlight. We teamed up with 4 delightful American friends, Jamie, Cheryl, Joe and Beth. As 'Allied Forces' Team name, Although a bit rowdy at times, fantastic fun. We annihilated the opposition. We achieved the highest number of points any team had achieved for a long time. A glass of bubbly to celebrate our victory was well deserved. Next cruise to Vietnam/Cambodia already booked with Viking for November 2018. Booking so far in advance ensures we get the cabin and cruise we want. The only small complaint I would have is cruises are booked up immediately the new brochure is out, if not before. We have 2 additional cruises next year with other lines. We are hoping to slot in another Viking cruise, this time an ocean destination in between. Most of them are fully booked already. A great attraction is that Viking offer £100.00 cruise vouchers worth double at the time of booking. There is no restriction with other offers. These possess an indefinite validity and can be given as presents. We always indulge in these purchases. Read Less

We chose this cruise to visit a part of Germany we hadn't been to previously. The scenery was beautiful throughout the cruise, and the tours at each stop were packed with interesting information and wonderful sites. Mingling with the locals was fun and we were able to enjoy the local food while touring and on the cruise ship. Our cabin was very comfortable and the dining and common areas of the ship were pleasant and comfortable. We really enjoyed meeting with our fellow passengers and sharing experiences. We were especially thrilled at how helpful the crew and staff were! My husband has mobility issues and everyone was so willing to help, even when we were managing fine on our own. This made the trip so much more comfortable and enjoyable! Near the end of the trip, we had an equipment failure with out travel wheelchair, and the ship's engineer was able to complete a temporary repair to get us through the rest of the trip - this was above and beyond our expectations! This was our third Viking cruise, and we plan to travel with Viking many more times! Read Less

We chose this cruise as our third river experience, all with Viking, because we wanted another taste of reconstructed former Eastern Europe, and we were offered free air fare. We were in great hands from the moment we stepped off the plane until we waved goodbye to come home. The ship, one of Viking's smaller, made for an intimate and very personable voyage downstream to Martin Luther's Wittenberg, and the service was outstanding, from the captain to every member of the crew. The entertainment aboard as well as the excursions that included entertainment were varied and reflected the rich Czech, Bohemian, and German cultures along the Elbe. We enjoyed the days in Prague and the immersion in Berlin's Cold-War history. My only disappointment was the "Prague by Night" excursion -- I had been expecting a pub crawl as we had had in Cologne two years earlier, instead of the panoramic tour we received, seeing the lights of the city from several viewpoints. I certainly plan to cruise Viking again, probably somewhere in Europe. Read Less

Loved sailing past bucolic scenes in the Czech Republic and parts of Germany that used to be part of East Germany. Staff members were friendly, very personal in their own stories, funny and very attentive. Food and wine were excellent! I especially liked the museum we went to in Dresden filled with treasures and the special rock formations in the "Alps." Potsdam was sobering knowing what history happened there. The guides, especially the ones in Germany, were very informative. We spent extra days in Prague before the trip started and afterwards in Berlin where we went to the Holocast Museum, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Topography of Terror. Despite the cold and sometimes rainy weather, the trip was very enjoyable, and there was plenty of water for the ship! Programming on the cruise was expertly handled and maps were always available for the town outings. It was very fun to take an evening walk through one town where we were only staying the night at the port. I might never have seen the towns we stopped at in any other trip and especially liked the personal stories about what it was like to live in the eastern block before unification. Read Less

Friends had told us that Prague was a must see city, and we had always wanted to visit Berlin. The Elegant Elbe seemed a perfect way to combine a history lesson and our desire to leisurely travel. The Astrild was a very new ship and with a maximum capacity of 99 (we only had 79)- was just what we were looking for. Travelling through what had been East Germany and learning through the shore excursions and the enhancement discussions when locals came on board was very rewarding. We are not big "entertainment fans" but the local cultural activities were well done. Our favourite memories are of our Program Director Vikki who was with us on both extensions in Prague and Berlin, she provided great insight to both cities and on our daily excursions. Vikki took pictures of us on our outings - so we have a great USB key of not only the sites we visited but of some of the folks we were travelling with. I also have to give a shout out to Chef Bobby who provided an excellent bill of fare, and willingly made custom breakfast omelettes to set the stage for day. We are happily repeat Viking customers and can hardly wait for our next trip France's Finest. Read Less

Previous recommendations. But the crew made the journey and experience of a lifetime. This was our 3rd Viking Cruise. The people on board from the Captain down were one of the most engaging and interacting we have seen. Our tour director was with use from the pre trip through our post trip. She was helpful, funny, and so hard working. The food as always was excellent and the staff remembered our names and what we preferred to eat and drink. The shared personal stories when asked that made the trip special. We were all there together. Our room was well appointed and immaculate at all time. The excursions were well thought out. The exception was an extra that we paid for in Prague, the Palace with lunch and concert. The meal was mediocre and the palace itself dark. As for the artwork, not world class and needs a lot of restoration (I guess thus the high price) also the walk up to the palace was too strenuous for some. We almost lost a guest who was having heart problems. We were not warned ahead of time. Would not recommend this to anyone. Not up to Viking standards. The extensions and the cruise was worth every penny. I do believe it is the staff that makes the trip what it is. The one we took to Easten Europe while the cruise was nice the crew was not up to par. We were a little wary after that, but this trip was way way beyond and so we will do another trip. Read Less

The crew was very visible and could not have been nicer. The program director was great! I would recommend this cruise to everyone. The places were delightful. We had a mix of larger and smaller cities. The cruise ship is decorated beautifully. When there was a task to be done such as taking our luggage off, the entire crew pitched in, including the captain and everyone. The golf hole on the top deck was a good distraction. We were scheduled for the Viking Beyla but it had been used on the other end of the river because the Astrid could not sail because of the depth of the water,. We recently sailed on The Astrild. Well we started on the Beyla for 3 nights. There was a bit of a problem the Elbe didn't have enough water to sail. Although they did manage one day for a few hours. We were docked and they bused us to the locations we were to see on board. It worked out very well, although it would have been great to sail. The crew was excellent and attentive. We then switched to the Beyla. We packed and they took our suitcases and when we arrived at the ship all was ready. Once again the crew was excellent!! They were professional, helpful and most of all pleasant. We sailed a bit each day from this point down. It all worked out just fine. We had some great meals on board both ships. My only complaint was they didn't serve local wines as we traveled. Though you can bring your own wine to dinner. All the shore excursions are top notch. BEFORE THE TRIP-CALL CENTER ISSUES Viking does not train the call center staff well and I was given wrong, inaccurate information regarding questions and specific travel details. Mistakes were made regarding the flights, trip extension dates, what was/was not included, and important information not shared which has effected what we could and couldn’t see due to "holiday days" in Berlin. After a letter to the CEO and a number of phone calls we were given a ship credit. Viking could not explain why information provided by call center reps was not always correct such as pushing us to leave later in the month because the ship was newer which not the case. This forced us to extend and incurred more expenses. Doubt that we will take another cruise with Viking because of the call centers wrong information and the problems encountered as a result. The call center rep told me that if you extend in Prague that the extension in Berlin was automatic, however that was not correct. Our flights were re-booked with new dates and there was a $200.00 charge which we had to pay. The call center never explained that the return flight was not with Lufthansa but United and had we not found this out ourselves we would have had a serious problem at the airport looking for the wrong gate/terminal. No one at the call center knew that the Semper opera tour was schedule on the tour plan and we purchased tickets online ourselves. No one at Viking was willing to assist us with the hotel extension in Berlin nor give us any booking information. I had to resolve this problem on my own taking four hours of my time with Hilton reservations to book the room for us. This was EXTREMELY difficult for me to do with the cost of phone calls, time on the internet and worry if we'd have a hotel room for the extension period of one night. THE SHIP EXPERIENCE The experience on the ship was WONDERFUL. Ship staff were well trained, the food was good with a nice selection of choices, daily tours were good especially the tour guide in Berlin and everything was well organized. The Concierge on the boat was especially helpful and the Program Director (Brenton) was excellent. Read Less

Simply put, the staff and crew were amazing throughout the trip. The meals were excellent and varied. The excursions were interesting and informative with options available for different interests. The Astrild is a new ship and the cabins were as nice as any we've had with prior cruises. Our cabin was a lower level one without a balcony. This was our first cabin without a balcony and we didn't miss it. The downside with this itinerary is the Elbe River is prone to lower levels which negated our ability to cruise through some of the more scenic areas near the Chek/Germany border. Absolutely a wonderful river cruise made so by the very attentive team- oriented staff, knowledgable cruise director,( Victoria), excellent on board activities, delicious fare and delightful ports. A lovely new small river boat, the Astrild is modern and spotless. This trip was a delight and among the best we have taken! The staff, guides and drivers ensured we thoroughly enjoyed our pre-cruise trip to Prague and post- cruise tours of Potsdam and the city center of Berlin. We had great hotel accommodations which were within walking distance of many historic sights. All of the excursions throughout the cruise were very informative, at a pleasant pace with listening devices and the tour guides were knowledgable and personable. This special journey on the Elbe was filled with pristine villages and lovely countryside. All the meals were superb with several selections. Even the gracious hotel manager assisted with serving soups, salads and light healthy entrees in the lounge for lunch. An alternative dining location, the lounge offered quick access to step outside and capture many photo ops. The names and preferences of all of the passengers were quickly learned by the crew.
