Port Douglas, Australia Cruise Port

Port of Port Douglas, Australia: An Overview

Sandwiched between reef and rainforest, this tropical seaside village is an upscale playground for nature lovers, foodies and water babies. Located an hour north of Cairns in Far North Queensland, Port Douglas is the gateway to that World Heritage-Listed double act: the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.

Don't Miss

With Four Mile Beach at one end of the main street and the yacht-filled harbour at the other, the town attracts a blend of yoga and organic food devotees, sailors and celebrities. While Port Douglas now thrives on a booming snorkelling and adventure industry, lavish hotels and a buzzing restaurant and shopping scene have combined to transform it from a 1960s fishing village into one of Australia's favourite resort towns.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is the only deluxe resort on a private, forested headland between Port Douglas and Cairns. Panoramic views take in the Far North Queensland coast, from the Great Barrier Reef to World Heritage rainforests and Thala's own beach. Complimentary experiences include bird and butterfly walks, Australia's only coconut discovery tour. On clear nights star-gazing is offered using 10-inch telescopes to see Australia's constellations, most of which can not be seen from Europe or North America, such as the Southern Cross and its colourful Jewel Box star cluster; also, the centre of the Milky Way galaxy is almost directly overhead.

Sea kayaking, dining in Thala's excellent onsite restaurant, spa services and reef trips cost extra. Suites and bungalow accommodation starts at $189 per night, with transfers available from Port Douglas or Cairns. See thalabeach.com.au for bookings.
