The trip was great in every respect. Crew were all helpful and pleasent. The food was all good and and a variety. The trips of the boat were interesting and guides gave us sufficient information. The trip up the Douro was the best view I have seen on any river trip. The passenger were from vareous destinations, which made for interesting conversations. The meals were sit where you like which helps to make it more interesting than being with the same people all the time. Travelling through the locks was very interesting as I am a Chartered Engineer. There is a lock which rises about 100 feet. It was an unbelevable experience.. The boat was very clean and every thing in good order. The only slight problem was that all the wall s and columns were stainless and lik mirrors so it took a little while to get use to seeing one self when moving arround Read Less

We saw this Cruise listed in one of Scenic's brochures and thought this was a little different. It was a unique experience and were fully occupied by our Tour Director Raquel. The villages and port making establishment visits were well balanced as was the whole trip. Having cruised the Danube and Russia on Scenic's boats as well as the Inside passage, this cruise was very contrasting both in the scenic sense but culturally. The were able to interact more closely with the locals than ever before. Although the growing of grapes and the making o port was much of the focus of this cruise, and there was certainly no shortage of beautiful ports, the beauty of the countryside was stunning. So too was the attention paid to detail on the Scenic Azure that was equal to previous Scenic River Cruising boats. We concluded our tour by saying "we could easily live here". Our River Cruise was preceded by a 3 night extension in Lisbon that is really worthwhile with plenty of time to "do your own thing". Don't wait, just do it! Read Less

Wanted to see the Douro River and Portugal. Chose this ship because it was small and reviews were good. It was lacking in many things: bathroom had black mold and smelled. Ship needs renovation. Even smelled like diesel fuel at times. Front desk was unfriendly and unhelpful. Food was hit and miss -- some meals weren't even hot! Had two very disappointing dinners -- the dining room staff did try to make it up by bringing me chocolate covered strawberries. The cruise director did not speak English well-- pronounced with Portuguese sounds. He was not especially friendly and did not explain things well. His projector with pictures of what we would see tomorrow seemed silly-- want to see it in person first! Wasted time instead of explaining times of tours, etc. in a clearer way. Piano player was good. Only a couple of nights of other entertainment. Tours were average- some interesting, some not. On the plus side: The dining room and lounge staff were super nice, friendly, helpful. Tour guides were good (in Lisbon and the tours off the ship). Bottom line: don't expect personal service and excellent food even though it is such a small ship and it is NOT a luxury boutique like they claim. Intercontinental in Lisbon was nice-- but only one restaurant in the large hotel. First night had to have dinner in bar because didn't know to make reservations. Read Less

We wanted to visit the wine region in Portugal and after a good experience with Emerald on a previous cruise we were very disappointed with this one .The cabins are very small compared with their Star ships and the bathroom was minute .There was hardly room to go round the bed to use the very small ,infant sized toilet. Our biggest disappointment was that out of 7 nights ,we only had 4 proper dinner evenings. One night was a so called BBQ which consisted of Luke warm precooked chicken which was dry and unpalatable ,small pieces of pork which was dry ,some sausages ,baked potatoes and a very limited salad offering .This was followed by a small dish of ice cream . Another night was a meal in a local venue which we did not go to .Those of us who stayed on board were served a very poor meal with chips still frozen in the middle . The first night was just a buffet ,so again ,not a dining experience. Several guests had stomach upsets including both of us .I continued to be ill on return to England and our hospitals tests came back as E.coli . We will not be going with Emerald again Read Less

It was a great way to see some of Portugal that on your own you wouldn't see. Local guides were great, however the timing for the excursion in Salamanca was wrong and by the time the tour was finished and free time started the bulk of the shops had closed hence only some souvenir shops were still open (Scenic need to rethink Salamanca). The river scenery was pretty impressive and lots of little villages where we had experiences and interactions with the locals included. Butler service and no additional charge for food or any drinks certainly made us feel like we were in the lap of luxury. A couple of occasions where they brought local entertainers on board but mostly the resident pianist/vocalist. He adapted very well to tastes of voyagers, who were predominantly Australians but including Scotts, Irish and Canadians. Communication really easy as all staff had great English language skills. We chose the cruise because of the route and time frame. The boat was new and lovely. it was kept completely clean at all times but very unobtrusively. Cabins were well attended to. All crew were friendly and helpful. Delightful bartending crew. High marks for food and dining experiences. Included tours were very nice and very informative. Easy to attend but plenty of time for personal time and exploration. The landscapes were beautiful and pretty much what we expected with vineyards and olive groves. This was a rather quiet and lazy route with only other river boats and personal craft so it was very relaxing. We've done almost 20 ocean cruises - this was our first river cruise and we expect to do many more. We asked many of our fellow passengers to help rate Emerald to their other experiences and most rated it higher or at least on par with some of the other better known lines. We will start with Emerald for our next. Probably will do a busier route next time. Read Less

The staff from the moment we stepped onto the boat were amazing and extremely helpful. The wait staff were always asking if they could help. The food was incredible and the variety was huge never bored. Our room was extremely tight but we never spent any time in there except to sleep so all good. The only 2 things I felt needed to be addressed here is the following:- On the Thursday night which was 2 nights before we departed they started talking about our disembarkation details which was very disappointing as the last thing on our minds was getting off the ship. They also made us feel by the Friday that they were more concerned about getting us off the ship than looking after us for the last 2 days. I also spent the Friday in the Wellness centre which was very disappointing. I found out during my massage that the lovely lady doing my treatments had only done 3 months of intense training in all things related the beauty treatment and hair styling. I ended up asking her to stop trying to blowdry my hair as she was making such a mess of it I ended up doing it back in my room. I then went out on that afternoon and got it done professionally at a hair salon. This is no reflection on the beauty therapist but this is a joke. People in this industry take years to perfect their trade, not 3 months. Read Less
