We were welcomed on board and we're treated like family from the start. Food not your usual "international cuisine" but included real Portuguese gems. Fish was so well cooked, as we're the meat dishes. One of our party was a veggie who confirmed the range of food available was fab for non meat eaters. Complementary wine, beer and soft drinks with meals was not stunted. All wine served was local to the region and was a real complement to the food. A drinks package was off set by on board credit and gave unlimited access to branded drinks. Discovery of the trip was chilled pink port. Ship was extremely clean and comfortable, and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Vessel was stable when moving and it was wonderful to watch the countryside go by. Locks were great fun especially as you could get really close to the walls. Sundeck was lovely with partly covered areas which helped prevented me from burning. Pool was only thigh deep and you could sit on the floor and keep your head above water. Would have been nice if a little deeper. Trips away from the ship were very interesting and the guides had a very good knowledge of their subjects. I'd recommend the evening event to the local vineyard as the wines, port and food excelled themselves. It could do with being a bit longer so you can soak up more of the atmosphere. Holiday not suitable for young children or young families as the average age of the fellow passengers was late 60 ' s at the youngest. We're all in our 50 ' s so managed to cope; any younger and you'll not have as much fun. Less able bodied people will enjoy the whole experience but you may struggle at times, although the crew will do their best to help. Overall a very comfortable enjoyable cruise with a very friendly crew, superb food and a great introduction to Portugal. Shout out to Luis, Carla, Elizabeta, Carlos, Francisco, Eduardo, Roberta, Bruno, Cornel and Captain Alphonso Rivera. X X X Read Less

Wishing to cruise the Duoro River, and finding this Croisieurope offering with hiking excursions made this a perfect choice....and it was. The trip was great. Boat was well maintained and clean. The staff were friendly and willing to always help with explanations and advice. The English-speaking walking guide, Rick, did an outstanding job. The food and food service was fabulous. And last, I cannot say enough about the young woman, Susanne, in charge of customer service, housekeeping and wait staff. The local folk dancing on the last evening was very enjoyable. Matthew the Croisieurope USA was also very responsive and helpful. Whole experience is highly recommended. Too bad they are not able to offer more of the hiking cruises in this region. You should note that the Duoro River is shallow and narrow. For this reason, the boats are not allowed to sail at night, as we had experienced on other river cruises, and do all their sailing during daylight. Read Less

We like Scenic. Having done all the Scenic river tours in France, we wanted to visit Europe again and the country in which two famous seafarers were born - Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. This is the first year this cruise was available, and most of it was excellent. However, what was terrible, was truly terrible. POSITIVES: We were fortunate to have included on our tour a visit to the Cathedral containing the tomb of the Vasco Gama, so we achieved that. Our business class flights from Perth via Singapore to Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines were excellent, but .. NEGATIVES: 1. the 2.5 hour flight to Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Lisbon was a nightmare. Definitely choose another airline or route for that leg! The 3 nights in Lisbon were OK at the Sheraton, very nice staff and room, but they had never heard of porridge or Vegemite .. so some education of the chefs to give Australians (38 of us, so worth bothering about) a choice of recognisable food would have improved our stay. 2. An evening dinner at "Tagine" restaurant in Lisbon near water on Saturday 23rd July was terrible. After half an hour on a bus It took an hour for half a cup of lukewarm tomato soup to arrive (by this time I had consumed the 2 small pieces of bread allocated to the four people around me), then there were some reasonable vegetables wrapped up in a piece of fish, then an hour later the dessert (a bright pink concoction which barely covered the base of the same size plate the soup had arrived in, with a strawberry on the top). There was plenty of red and white wine, served copiously. 3. More variety in on-board entertainment essential (not the same guy every night!) FINALLY We liked Portugal, found most of the tours excellent (except the afternoon ones when it was 43 degrees, which we declined) the ship, most Scenic Staff. However third parties (hotels, restaurants) need more careful selection. Onboard the "Scenic Azure" the food and staff was excellent. We needed a rest and once on board were happy to stay put.
