It was part of our ski trip summer trips. This is a fantastic cruise for people who love scenery, wine vineyards especially port wines, olives and churches. It also is an area that tells you about cork and cork trees. The entertainment was okay...it is a small ship maximum 113 guests and is very fun. The ship is 2 years old and Emerald has made this small ship seem larger with mirrors everywhere. It is bright and gleaming and the rooms are adequate for cruising. We were on the lowest deck of 3 floors and it even has a large window at the water level. Service was superb and so was the food. Great variety and very tasty and colorful. The breakfast and lunch menu was full of variety and choices. Dinner menu was elegant and 3 to 4 courses with just enough to satisfy the palate. Wine and drinks with every meal was included. The shore excursions led by the Emerald tour leaders and they were very knowledgeable. We saw churches, wine tastings ,food market, city tours , historical bridges and got free time to shop and try out the local foods. Overall, this was one of the best river tours we have done. Excellent cruise line, The ship was small with 97 passengers. Average age in the 60s from various countries. mostly Canada. The ship was well designed and comfortable. The cabin #217 was well planned. The bathroom and shower were bigger than expected for a small ship. The balcony was small but room enough for 2 small chairs and table. Coffee, tea and snack was down the hall (2nd deck) No coffee maker in the cabin. The service was excellent in every category. The staff was polite and informative. Best cruise director we have ever had - Luis Ribeiro. The Douro river was very scenic with mostly vineyards So, the emphasis is on wine. 1st week in Sept was best time to go, no rain and 75 for 15 days. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was served in the dining area. A later buffet is also available. The quality was excellent. The ports were all good. All the excursions were worth going on. (One required a 2 hr bus trip there and back. The excursions had 3 levels from easy to more difficult. Read Less

It covered the Douro River with optional excursions. The best part was that you weren't locked into any activity that you didn't want to participate in. A good overview of Spain and Portugal. The on board dining was excellent and gave us a taste of the local cuisine. The concierge Manuel was an exemplary organizer with a good command of the English language. He commanded the staff appropriately and effectively. He was always available and ready to help. He has a vast knowledge of the history and local culture. Without his direction the cruise would not have run as smoothly .I would recommend Manuel as concierge on any cruise. I would recommend this cruise to anyone who wants to have a relaxing time and still be overseas enjoying the scenery the company the hospitality of this crew. It caters for all ages and tastes with numerous possibilities to organize your own holiday. Read Less

This cruise was chosen as part of an overland Spain/Portugal tour. Everything about the cruise as a part of EverGreen tours was well organised and professional. The rooms were well decorated and appointed. Everything was exceptionally clean. The quality of the food prepared by a chef and his team was exceptional . Food provided for breakfast and lunch was also wonderful with a large variety and choice available. Wine was overflowing and good quality. The tours that were an included part of our larger tour were extremely good value showing the particular features of Portuguese life ( eg Port wine, cork ) There were only 107 people on board and getting on and off the boat was easy. There was lots of free time to do our own exploring and guests were able to choose to stay on board if they wished. Staff were amazing Their approach was friendly, engaging & helpful at all times. They were extremely professional in every role that they filled. They were also a lot of fun. activities provided on board were engaging, interesting and informative. Excellent previous experience. I like the river cruises. Viking has given us great experience all around: service, meals, rooms, tours, etc. We will try the ocean cruise next. It is hard to put in words but I will try: from the moment we embarked, in Porto, Portugal, we we treated like VIP's. All of the personal was very attentive. I had a medical problem and receive very good attention with appointments, transportation and follow ups. The dinning experience was excellent with very good food, truly nice (not fake) service from everyone. There was no place where I did not receive the best attention. Highly recommended!!!! The tours were all planned ahead and well executed with excellent guides very fluent in English. And all the tours were included in the price, therefore I did not pay extra. The rooms has nothing else I will add. During the cruise in the river we had a fantastic view of nature. Read Less

This was the second to last cruise of the year. Things ran smoothly, and the crew were a well-oiled machine. They were faultless, professionalism and enthusiasm were apparent. We felt cared for. Food was to a very high standard. Not classic but excellent which is what you want on an unpretentious cruise like this. Evenings were smart but laid back and most of all fun. I expected to find the staff looking forward to their break and being a little bored with the guests, but that was not the case. Ana in the dining area is exceptional, Ricardo as cruise director knows his stuff and the Captain very professional and caring. I had one issue. The crane above our cabin was used at 2am to shift the gangplank. Only one night and once explained we got on with it. I would say a cruise on the Duoro is perfect early autumn like this. Temperatures were cool but good enough for anyone from the UK. 20c being the average. The trips off the ship were excellent. I particularly liked the visit to Sandeman and Mr Bean (Go, you will understand). The river is just stunning at this time of year. The colours were amazing. It must be one of the most picturesque of all river cruises as you are always in touch with the riverbank and wildlife. Thanks, Uniworld, I loved it..... Keep up the good work! Read Less

This cruise was on a smaller river cruise ship of a little over a hundred passengers plus about 30 crew. Service was very attentive without being too intrusive. The crew, particularly the guides were very well versed on the history and culture of the area. We took every shore excursion possible and learned a lot about viticulture, history, art, architecture, local food and wine. It was a fully immersed tour of the Duoro river. Upon arrival, we were shown to our cabin, which was on the very lowest level was quite comfortable. All of our luggage were there waiting to be unpacked. So convenient to unpack/pack just once! Since we were always on the go, whether on shore excursions or watching the scenery and the ship go through locks, we hardly spent much time in the cabin other than to rest up. Meals on board were very well planned. There were always options that included local fare. At meal times, we always had the option to sit at a table to meet other passengers or sit by ourselves. We enjoyed meeting a lot of the other passengers, and made new friends. The cruise director always had after dinner entertainment programs that gave us a glimpse of local culture, music, and arts. And they had a briefing every evening as to what we were to expect at our shore excursions the next day. Everything was orchestrated efficiently and on time - bus transfers, embarkation, disembarkation, etc. Planning on taking another Viking river cruise next year. Read Less

We chose this cruise, after going to Scenic information nights. And had not been to Portugal before. Arriving in Lisbon was not smooth transfer. Had to wait to get into our room, after a very long flight from Canada. Sheraton in Lisbon not up to Scenic standards. Leaving Lisbon fine. Transfer to Madrid not good, out of cabin at 9 am, waiting in lounge until 1 pm. Could have taken a bus trip instead? Steps between floors, are not wide enough, and dangerous. Surveys should be given out early in trip, either on line or paper, so we can accurately fill in what we liked or didn't. Trip to Salamanca good, but needed more time in city. Need to be able to add buses and trips, when the first is full. Taste of Coa valley, should have had another bus trip, as it filled up early. The Coa museum, was not good, too detailed and boring, would only rate it 4/10. Raquel Miranda cruise director very knowledgeable, however very young, and needs to loosen up, connect to passengers better. Felt she treated us like young children. Read Less

We were welcomed on board and we're treated like family from the start. Food not your usual "international cuisine" but included real Portuguese gems. Fish was so well cooked, as we're the meat dishes. One of our party was a veggie who confirmed the range of food available was fab for non meat eaters. Complementary wine, beer and soft drinks with meals was not stunted. All wine served was local to the region and was a real complement to the food. A drinks package was off set by on board credit and gave unlimited access to branded drinks. Discovery of the trip was chilled pink port. Ship was extremely clean and comfortable, and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Vessel was stable when moving and it was wonderful to watch the countryside go by. Locks were great fun especially as you could get really close to the walls. Sundeck was lovely with partly covered areas which helped prevented me from burning. Pool was only thigh deep and you could sit on the floor and keep your head above water. Would have been nice if a little deeper. Trips away from the ship were very interesting and the guides had a very good knowledge of their subjects. I'd recommend the evening event to the local vineyard as the wines, port and food excelled themselves. It could do with being a bit longer so you can soak up more of the atmosphere. Holiday not suitable for young children or young families as the average age of the fellow passengers was late 60 ' s at the youngest. We're all in our 50 ' s so managed to cope; any younger and you'll not have as much fun. Less able bodied people will enjoy the whole experience but you may struggle at times, although the crew will do their best to help. Overall a very comfortable enjoyable cruise with a very friendly crew, superb food and a great introduction to Portugal. Shout out to Luis, Carla, Elizabeta, Carlos, Francisco, Eduardo, Roberta, Bruno, Cornel and Captain Alphonso Rivera. X X X Read Less

We wanted to see Portugal & cruise down the Douro River. It was a wonderful cruise with great service. The Hemming was a new ship & the accommodations were very lovely. The food & service were exceptional. We loved it & would travel Viking again. We spent two days in Lisbon & a day touring Porto prior to getting on the ship...both cities were gorgeous. We thoroughly enjoyed this trip & would recommend it highly. I would stress again how great the service was...we became great friends with our waiter too. He was wonderful. The daily tours were great too...we stopped @ 5 ports down & 5 ports back. Our trip to Salamanca was quite interesting too. Its a university town. Very clean, historic & easy to find your way around. The highlight of the cruise was the beauty of the Douro river & the gorgeous Portugese countryside with the beautiful vineyards we visited. All in all, it was a memorable trip. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had not been to Portugal before and because we had been told how wonderful the trip had been for others. From the first meeting with the crew of the new Viking Hemming we knew that this would be a great trip. It was the attitude of the crew together that was the secret. This 100% Portuguese crew enjoyed their jobs, loved their country, loved being of service to the passengers., and had the most wonderful sense of humor. If they sensed that you needed anything they were there with smiles and joy in their hearts. My husband had some balance issues and had just started using a cane. The staff was always there for him. If a side trip had any difficult walking issues they were with him before he needed them. The crew was the icing on the cake as the ship, the river, food, side trips made the whole experience more than I could have expected. It was our first Viking trip but not our last for sure. We enjoyed out stay in Lisbon, it's a beautiful city full of world history. Our guide was very knowledgeable and proud of her country. She explained so well the advances of Portugal, especially in the last 20 years. Again the staff/crew is what made our first Viking trip so wonderful. Read Less
