This was the first cruise I have been on but I loved it. The only negatives that I had were it left port an hour late and a lot of noise children other than that it was extremely fun and the food was better than I expected not saying it was the best in the world but it was far above what I had expected and the fruit was very fresh. My favorite restaurant was the blue iguana it’s burritos were awesome but they only served them from like 12 to 2:30. There was plenty of activities and things to do on the ship so much that I couldn’t go to everything I wanted because they overlapped times. Everyone was extremely friendly and the Cruise director Nicky was amazing so much energy and so fun she was probably one of best parts of the cruise. There was an adults only pool that was nice. The room was spacious and had a large balcony. They had a 24hour pizza delivery it was $5 a delivery and usually took 10 min. Overalls I had a great time and would definitely go again Read Less

The redeeming feature of this cruise was the places of destination. The Carnival Sunshine ship was the worst of my cruising experiences out of 5 different cruise company's. The ship is poorly layed out causing the feeling of being overly crowded and some what chaotic. I appreciate the need for the safety drill before setting sail but the Sunshine procedure for this is APPALLING ! Stood in long lines of people 6 rows deep was stiffling, extremely uncomfortable and claustrophobic. No consideration was taken for age, health conditions, mobility ect and the whole point of learning about safety was totally a waist of time as at no point was many of us ( including myself and my daughter) stuck in the oppressive lines of so many people able to even see the demonstration of the life jacket and how to use it. Most of the staff although efficient in their duties were pretty misrable and at times even blatantly rude esspecially in the self service resturant. The layout and organisation of how the food is set out is not good at all. The ship was not clean in some area's and over all felt like being at a Butlins cheap holiday camp, tacky and tired in need of a face lift even though its claimed the ship has been refurbished. In balance there was some friendly pleasent staff who smiled and gave cheerful greetings, Mikey the entertainments directer is outstanding at his job and has the uniqueness of making you feel acknowledged and part of whatever he was doing even if you were only observing, without Mikey lifting the mood of pretty much all passengers at some point throughout his daily shenanigans the Carnival Sunshine in my opinion is a grim ship to be on. The destinations are great but the Sunshine ship its self and the way it is run, is i think very much in need of some changes being made to improve the overall experience for it's passengers. Esspecially the safty drill before departure, a shocking waste of time and extreamly stressful, with the objective of making passengers aware of the safety evacuation and the appropreat use of life jackets serverly lacking and a big fail in its purpose. We spent a week in Walt Disney World prior to our cruise. This time of year Florida has outbreaks of Love-bugs. Some years bugs are worse than others this year is kind of bad. This is not our first time in the Orlando area, but our first time out of Port Canaveral and the Carnival Sunshine. Embarkation went smoothly, we showed up at our scheduled time and walked right on to the ship. The first impression of the atrium was it was dark and old casino' ish looking. The ship was not ugly, just older style appearance. We went out on deck only to notice many lovebugs have infested the ship. We just figured the bugs would go away once we were at sea. Our biggest disappointment was the condition of our room. Although the room was clean the decor is well worn and in need of replacement. The countertops appeared to be cleaned with a brillo pad. Another unsightly area was the balcony. There was paint splatter all over the chairs and floor. I love Blue Iguana and Guys Burger Joint, but the quality has gone down tremendously. Every Breakfast burrito I had the sausage was cold and every Guy's Burger I had was way overcooked. We really enjoyed most of the staff, especially our room steward and the folks at the Shake and Coffee bar. We ate at JiJi's Asian Kitchen, Bonsai sushi, Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, Cucina Del Capitano, and the Pizza place. All were great and enjoyed very much! The buffet on the Sunshine is extremely limited and is not that good, at least the attempt we made to have a good meal. Comedy shows were all funny and very entertaining as was the 70's show. Mikey the cruise director did his job very well, but Schwartz is still our favorite. Read Less

Filthy ship, now have a horrible cold. food sucked, kids ran rampant, young drunks everywhere. 1st and last time on a carnival cruise. Had to wait in a line for anytime dining just to get a table assigned and then go downstairs to the dining room to request seating. What????? How stupid. Cabin service was offered only once a day either am or pm. so once you go to the crowded pools with a bunch of drunks and yelling kids you have to wait until the next day to get a dry towel. food was horrible, dry, cold, no flavor etc. Pool areas were occupied by tons of young fall down loud drunks. Having taken cruises on celebrity, royal caribbean and holland, this was the most disappointing experience and a total waste of money. I will never again go on a carnival cruise even if it was free. Chose this cruise because it was offered to me as an Ultra by the Players Club. This was my 24th Carnival cruise and I am Platinum soon to be Diamond. I cruised with my sister who uses oxygen. We drove down from Tallahassee the same day and the drive was uneventful. Embarkation was as easy as ever. Walked right on the ship. Our cabin was ready and we were able to drop our carry-ons and head up to have lunch. The elevators were busy but crew members were at the elevators to direct traffic and man the elevators to the Lido. I've been on Sunshine before and it's not my favorite ship. We were in an inside cabin when usually I have a balcony but booked this offer late and got the last inside cabin offered. The cabin was quiet, cool and comfortable. Our room steward Macklin was exceptional. We were all the way to the front and did feel the rocking a little bit more than usual. Actually I love this because it makes me sleep like a baby. We ate in the Marketplace and the food was ok. It was ok the entire cruise. Same old menu in the dining room. No escargot. I have been on seven Carnival cruises in the last year and every time I go I notice little changes. The coffee was better this time and I'm not sure why but the food just wasn't as good this time. Talked to marketplace management about the fried oysters. Told him that if someone ate those oysters and had never had them before they would never try them again. There was a time when the oysters and shrimp were fresh and they breaded them but no more. They were heavily breaded and fishy. I have to say that there was a good assortment of food but it was just not good only mediocre. Cakes were very nice looking but didn't have the flavor that I would expect. Never tasted vanilla in anything. Enough about food. As far as activities there was lots of trivia and the usual activities. Love the arts and crafts but the last three cruises the only craft offered was card making. Seems like another cut back to me. Tea was offered on Sea days but it's not like it used to be. The only tea that is offered without cost was regular Lipton and green tea. If you wanted earl gray it was $1.95 extra. The desserts were limited as well. They were pretty much what is offered for dessert on the Lido. Didn't go to the shows as I've seen them all the last year. The musical ensembles were good but not over the top good. Service was excellent. Crew members went over and above to help. Didn't have much time to chat in the dining room because they have cut down number of servers and this has lead to inaccuracies in the orders, not getting juice, no bread at breakfast unless you ask for it, etc. Got off in every port but have been to all of them so didn't do any excursions. It was also a little difficult with my sister. We did a lot of walking but it was hard for her. Going to the beach is difficult with oxygen as well. That pretty much left the bus tours which we've done. I tried to spend some time in the casino but it was impossible. This Ultra was so overbooked that there were no machines available and people waiting to use them. Some people waited hours before the casino opened to get a particular machine. I finally gave up. Will never do an Ultra cruise again. Just not worth it. Read Less

Having cruised on another Carnival ship and it being OK ( not over the top but OK), we decided to book this cruise specifically because my sister wanted to go to Grand Turk. We cruise about 1 x every 2 years. This ship and staff does not need to be in service. The only good thing was Mikey the cruise director. The ship was really dirty ( dust everywhere, smelled like feces on many floors including one with a dining room. Very few sanitizer stations. Same napkin laid in a hallway for 7 days. Sheets were stained. Buffet was way less exciting than Shoney’s or Big Boy for northerners. Sister was hospitalized with community acquired pneumonia day after we got back and I have been on meds ever since. Met another family on the cruise that 2 of them caught lice. NEVER AGAIN. Please do yourself a favor and do not book this disaster. Read Less

We've learned from past travels. If you're looking for imperfection you'll find it wth the result being a vacation investment /experience being diminished in part to unrealistic expectations. Regardless of who, when, what or where.. This was the 3rd cruise for wife and I. All on Carnival. Group included brother and sister in law. All of us are in our mid 50's. Port Canaveral embarkation. Flew into Sanford day prior. One way rental with National. Stayed overnight in New Smyrna Beach, one of our favorite destinations just over an hour drive North of the port. Waited about 30 minutes for shuttle from rental car lot to cruise terminal. Embarkation was easy less than an hour. Condition of ship is good, cleaner than those on prior cruises. Service of Crew overall was good. Granted not perfect. But honestly, the only deficiencies I noticed were very minor. Ping pong tables not having a ball to use. The occasional cup(s) or plate(s) left out of place by fellow guests which remained uncollected for extended periods. I attribute both more to undesired guest behavior than failure of service. We've had balcony cabins prior cruises. 1st time for an interior cabin which was available a little before 1:30. No regrets doing the interior. Floor plan is the same with the exception being no refrigerator in the interior. It should be noted the showers are much larger on Sunshine. Having now done both balcony and interior cabins. My opinion is selection should be based upon importance of view and outside access/privacy against budget constraints. With that stated, have since booked an Alaskan cruise with interior obstructed view cabin as a compromise. MDR early dining was excellent in both first and foremost service of wait staff followed by the food. Both, much better than expected. Food may have been better than on other ships. due to the early dining this time versus any time dining selected on others. Entertainment overall was average. Impressed with the fun squad assisting guest in finding seating at the bigger shows. Cruise director "Mikey" is very a personable and talented entertainer. Disembarkation went well, our cabins were on deck 2. Obtained another one way rental from National with about a 10 minute wait for shuttle from cruise terminal to rental lot. Was on the road about 09:30. Overall this cruise was a great experience and a great value. Would like to revisit both Grand Turk and St. Martin for extended stays. Read Less

We chose this ship because of the departure port, the itinerary and the size. We are regular cruisers and although we have cruised NCL and Royal, we are usually loyal to Carnival. We are also not picky and not big complainers. Most of this review is negative but if it is not in this review, it was probably great. I offer these things because I think they are all fixable. I don’t want anyone to get impression it was a bad cruise, it was not. It just wasn’t great. This is an older ship. Old is okay but when a ship is old, it is imperative that no small detail be left to chance in the cleanliness department. Sadly, this was not the case. Was it clean? Yes. Could it have been cleaner? Yes. The main issue was that help did not take care of things quickly enough to keep it from being noticed. There was always the feeling of being understaffed or staffed with lazy people in the common areas. One day the ice machine was empty on lido, The next day, the drink machine was empty. These are the little things that are no big deal one time but when a pattern starts to develop, it’s an issue. We stayed in a balcony cabin 6190. Our cabin was a typical Carnival cabin and we had no complaints. Our steward was one of the best we have had on multiple cruises and the best thing about our cruise. Our steward probably saved this review. If Carnival could clone him, the ship would have less problems. The cabin was spotless and he was attentive to everything! Plus, he smiled! A smile goes a long way. Entertainment was hit and miss on this ship. Unfortunately, the main miss was featured the most in the atrium. Sunshine needs to move these guys around. Don’t put your weakest entertainer in a prime location. Jordan is an excellent guitar play but he lacks in the singing department. Pair him up with someone who can sing and let him play guitar and problem solved. Jeff, in the piano bar, was quite talented and entertained the crowd. A couple other groups were good but there was no “Wow” in the everyday entertainment. The comedians we saw were terrific. However, the comedy club is too small for the ship. It is not right that people stand in a long line for long periods of time and still not get a seat. Even some of the seats, do not see the stage but watch on a screen. Sunshine has to fix this! It is a sore point and a big loser for the ship. It is also not friendly to those with mobility issues who cannot stand for long or run to locate seat. This could be easily fixed by having a podium where you pick up a token much lime you pick up a pager for anytime dining and when the tokens are all gone, the show is full. Then, at least you could give people a token to the next show instead of letting the same few people see all the shows and everyone else be mad about it. Dining room was good, food was as expected and some dishes were outstanding. The Steakhouse and JiJi’s were both worth the extra cost. Guy’s Burgers still the best lunch item. The Lido buffet was pretty lame. This is one area that could use a reboot. The buffet needs more selections and more staff and you definitely are losing when you have two omelette stations and one cook at each. Yeah, that just about guarantees 99% are not getting an omelette. Add some more grills!! Read Less

After booking our cruise, I was shocked to read so many negative reviews and began to dread my cruise (which, of course, you never want to do!). I've come to the conclusion that some people just need something to complain about. Was this cruise equivalent to staying in a five-star hotel in a major city? No, of course not, but if I wanted to do that I would have stayed in a five-star hotel in a major city. I wanted to cruise with my family, relax, and have fun, and I was able to do all of that and more on the Carnival Sunshine! My family of three (my husband, myself and our 8-year-old daughter) cruised in April 2019 from Port Caneveral and cruised to Aruba, Curacao and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. We stayed in a balcony room, which was the perfect amount of space for us, although we weren't in the room all that often. I wish that our neighbor wasn't smoking a lot of the time, and I could have complained to guest services but didn't - that was on me. Otherwise, the room was great. Our housekeeper, Ari, was super friendly and did an excellent job. Of course, we all loved the towel animals! I saw so many complaints about the food on this cruise and I sincerely do not understand. The buffet was lacking, but I'm not a buffet eater so I just ... didn't eat there. The main dining room service was slow, but that's standard on all cruises I've been on. The food itself was very good in the dining room, and we loved the options for lunch! The fish tacos at Blue Iguana were AMAZING, and I ate them many times. I tried a bite of a burger from Guy's and it was delicious. JiJi's wok bowls for lunch were excellent, and my daughter loved being able to get pasta. I can honestly say I have no complaints about the food. Drinks were cold and plentiful. My husband and I are drinkers and so we purchased and made good use of the Cheers! package. We felt we used it enough that it was worth the money, but you'll have to decide that based on your own personal preferences. This was my fourth cruise and I couldn't tell you anything about any of the previous cruise directors, but MIKEY made our experience on this boat. He was EVERYWHERE, and so upbeat and friendly. Definitely don't miss events that Mikey is running. We particularly enjoyed 80s and 90s music trivia! CAMP OCEAN was an incredible experience for our daughter! She had a great time with the counselors and the other kids. I really enjoyed the many ways that this cruise catered to families - but I also noted and appreciated the many ways it catered to the adult experience, too. We were able to enjoy both sides of the experience. Embarkation was quick and easy. Debarkation was somewhat of a mess, but I've yet to experience a cruise where it wasn't. In closing, we booked our next Carnival cruise within a week of coming home. We had an amazing time. There is something on this boat for everyone, whether you are traveling with or without kids. You just have to find it, and the Carnival Sunshine made that very easy. I would definitely recommend this ship to others! Read Less

First of all, I must say that our cabin steward was an absolute sweetheart. Many of the ship crew were also great. The downfall is that the ship is old and small. The metal around the decks is painted over eaten away steel. We found holes throughout the railings. The carpets throughout are old and many sofa/restaurant bench upholstery have stains. There is a peculiar smell about the ship. Many times there are sewage and/or grey water smells. The buffet was subpar. Desserts were great the first night then thereafter were dry and flavorless. The sit-down dining was better but not outstanding. The ship lacked entertainment. There was a comedy show that was good. Many of the shows in the liquid lounge revolved around what to buy on the islands and promoted their sales in their ship stores. The ship was small and if you are planning a long cruise you might want to choose one with many stops so you are not bored to death multiple days at seas. We were in a cabin with a window. The room was clean the bathroom was dirty in corners with caked on dirt. I suppose they don't have time for deep cleaning since a steward told me when we were leaving the ship that they were boarding again in one day. This ship does not compare to Royal Carribean or MSC. We were disappointed and felt it was a major waste of money. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the intinerary and our first 8 day. But this ship is terribly over crowded and badly redesigned. When they refurbished this ship in 2013 they added more cabins, removed a pool and added huge slides on top in back. So very unstable and rocky in only 6 - 8 foot swells. On fun days at sea it was terrible, we could not even get a lounge chair anywhere in the adult only area. There were fights over chairs and security had to come. There is only 1 pool and an oversized hot tub of a pool in serenity area. I will never go on this ship again and too long of lines for food. They added specialty restaurants that are an up charge. Not good locker room space or showers in workout area. All the other ships had a nice steam room off men’s locker room for free. This one has a coed one they wanted to charge $159 per week for it. This ship is the worst of 8 we have cruised on. Spent a lot of money to be very disappointed! Our previous 7 cruises on other Carnival ships were good! Read Less

We had some time off for spring break. There were four of us all adults who were out of school for the week and in need of some relaxation and vitamin sea. We picked this cruise for the 8 days and haven't been to any of these ports before. I personally think that vacations are what you make of them. They can be as busy as you choose or as relaxing as you choose. No not everything will always be perfect but if you let people or things stress you out then shame on you, it defeats the purpose of vacationing. This cruise was absolutely AMAZING. We have never been on the Sunshine before and we loved the different layout than those ships we've been on in the past. We loved how they had all the food places in the different areas of the ship. We always love the DELI, and GUYS burgers did not dissapoint. We didn't try the italian or wok place except for breakfast so cannot comment on that. They had food/snacks in the Havana Bar and by the Ocean plaza that were never as busy as the lido buffet. Food in the dining room this cruise was superb. Every single night we each tried multiple appetizers or entrees and loved them all.(oops not ALL there was one pasta dish that I didn't like the sauce of) Some appetizers we liked we ordered seconds or thirds of and had no problem getting them served. Lobster night and filet mignon nights were delish, prime rib was done perfectly, in the past we've had problems with steaks or lobster being too done but not this time. Enjoyed a good variety of desserts with baked Alaska being my fave. We did have my time dining every night and it went fairly smooth. We had to wait for a few minutes each night but that wasn't a problem, we just signed in online & it texted when our table was ready so we'd have a drink at the Red Frog Pub or Alchemy Martini Bar. Unfortunately not the same wait staff each night but we still had pretty good service. We also did do breakfast in the dining room most days and the food/staff were just as good early morning. I loved the steak & eggs(yes same filet mignon at dinner) and the brunch mac & cheese was almost as good as Noodles & Company. We definitely put the midnight pizza bar to the test. Hit it all but one night after casino, shows, or piano bar and it was good and very very busy(so take your patience with you). The cruise director MIKEY is awesome. I think he was the best we've seen. Always energetic and friendly. Don't miss the 80's trivia in the atrium bar IT WAS A BLAST. Get seats to enjoy the entertainment and laughs :) His assistant Nicky from England was fun and top notch as well. We did play trivia throughout the week and the hosts were fun and witty. Music around the ship was plentiful and enjoyed by all. We loved Cassidy Rae Wilson in the Piano Bar. It was her last week working so she is back to Australia until the fall, but we hope to cruise with her again. The gentleman that plays on the stairwell outside of the sports bar, pixels photo area, and above atrium bar was so good. I feel bad that I forget his name but he played tunes that everyone enjoyed, oldies thru current definitely a good singer. The duet of Young Patches were pretty good as well they played through different areas of the ship. They are from Cali and definitely look hipster :) RB & The Sunshine Band always had good tunes as well. Their 80s night was great!! Don't miss the Red Frog Bar on this ship . 1/2 price happy hour every day with fish bowls and other special drinks. They have karaoke, shuffleboard and foosball in the back as well. The Punchliner Comedy Club had some good talent for sure. Missed one night but they sure did put smiles on our faces. ADULT SERENITY AREA ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW !! This is the best from our 13 cruises. We've been on Carnival and 2 RCCL and this was just so relaxing and had so much room and on three decks. LOVED IT :) Aruba: what a beautiful place. We spent the day at MooMba Beach, Aruba and it did not disappoint. We changed clothes at the Holiday Inn and very much enjoyed this port. We had booked on our own a sunset sail with The Jolly Pirate and had an amazing time on that 5:30-7:30pm excursion. It was good for adults as well as the several families aboard seemed to have a good time. Curacao: another beautiful place. We spent the afternoon at the Renaissance hotel right at the port. It has two infinity pools and a small beach. It was nice, quiet and very relaxing. Absolutely breath taking and not very crowded at all. You can get a day pass at the resort by just walking up. Amber Cove Dominican: we had heard there were lazy rivers, pools, zip lining, volleyball etc..... right at the pier so we did not make any plans for this day. We slept in, ate breakfast and spent a few hours here. They have $10 buckets of beer and lots of fun stuff to do. You can zip line all day for $20/person. Everyone we saw here seemed to be enjoying themselves. We will definitely do this again. The other couple we were with tried to get a taxi to the beach but it was on the other side of the island and they wanted $60 each way for a taxi, needless to say they enjoyed the area right at the port. PS) As you made read in other reviews from this week DISEMBARKING was not fun. There were delays and our ship arrived late plus we had to clear customs. Lots of people were not off the ship till 10:30 or later and people were pissed.......... This is why cruise lines suggest you fly out in the afternoon in case of issues. Lots of people missed flights etc..... sad for those who had this happen but it is what it is and hopefully everyone made it home safely Read Less

We joined two other couples with whom we were stationed in the military 20+ years ago for a reunion cruise. We knew it was during Spring Break so we expected lots of children, which was the case. It wasn’t too much problem until late night (late for us, like 10:00 pm!), when the teenagers were running through the ship. However, it really wasn’t too intrusive. The embarkation was very smooth. We were on the ship smoothly and our cabin was ready as promised at 1:30. Conversely, the disembarkation was a cluster. Our ship arrived two hours late, and we waited hours to leave the ship. Our bags were in a large room, sorted by zones, but it appeared everyone disembarked at the same time. It was very disorganized. We stayed at the Radisson the night prior to our cruise and utilized their parking service. I would advise everyone to avoid this service due to the incredible rudeness and poor organization at disembarkation. The gentleman driving the scooter (perhaps due to a foot injury) was particularly rude. The food on the cruise was just ok. The service and food has certainly declined in the past few years but is what we expected. The food was plentiful, of course, with plenty of different venues. The highlight of the cruise was the cruise director, Mikey. We enjoyed having him as our cruise director on the Fantasy last year and we feel he is the best cruise director we’ve ever had. It is worth following him and booking the cruise on which he is the cruise director; he’s that good! Overall, it was a good cruise! Read Less

We stayed at the Quality Inn in Cocoa Beach(??). The price included our room, transportation from the Orlando Airport to the hotel, shuttle to the ship, and transportation from the ship back to the airport. A real bargain. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary; islands that we had never visited before. Embarkation went very smoothly; disembarkation.....not so much. We have been on numerous Carnival ships, some larger, some smaller. But, for some reason, this is the first time I have ever felt that the ship was crowded. I feel as though when Carnival refurbished the ship, they tried to cram too many things into the space. Some areas seemed underutilized; others, such as the Comedy Club were packed with standing room only, and some people not able to get in at all. Too have to stand in line for 45 minutes or more, just to get into the Comedy Club (and not sure you will get a seat) seems a little ridiculous. Our cabin was great (we were offered an upgrade and took it); the staff was overworked, but kept our cabin clean. Dining - we only went to the main dining room once (it takes too long to get through a meal) That dinner was good. There was plenty of food at the Lido buffet, and at all of the other food areas around the ship. The Deli always had a line waiting for food and sometimes had only 1 person to wait on everyone. Guy's Burgers always had a long line that often blocked people trying to get from one area of the Lido deck to the other. I miss the old style of desserts at the Lido Buffet. I used to like to take a couple of the small desserts that they used to have, to sample. On the Sunshine, they had whole cakes, and a few pies, that they cut to serve you. They were all very delicious, but one slice of one kind of cake was enough. Mikey, the Entertainment Director, knows how to pull the people into the activities. He always had the crowd up and into the spirit! There were other activities going on throughout each day, although on one of the first sea days, the activities were very dull and then we had a port day and there were lots of interesting sounding things going on back on the ship! I managed to see two of the comedians; Diane Ford was great, both at the PG show and later at the 18+ show. The male comedian wasn't even good; I had heard some of his jokes before and the ones I hadn't heard before weren't that funny. Then I caught a cold and didn't feel like going to see the comedians that came later in the week. Service was always good with many of the crew members going around with a smile on their faces. Alexis, from the Red Frog Pub, was absolutely my favorite! The ports were all beautiful. We took excursions in Aruba and Curacao with guides who taught us a great deal about their islands and took us through many areas, both ending at beautiful beaches. In Amber Cove, we did our own thing and enjoyed wandering around the town. Would I go again? Yes, to the islands, but not on the Sunshine if I can help it. Read Less

Chose this cruise to celebrate birthdays of two family members. Seven of the thirteen members of our party are platinum Carnival cruise members. The ship is in good condition, however the cleanliness of the lower deck lounging area and lounge chairs was terrible, bordering on disgusting. Dirt and dried white paint flecks were all over the chairs, sticking to towels and clothing. The selections and quality of the main dining menu has slipped when compared with other Carnival cruises I have taken. Overall dining room service has deteriorated. Our party was led to a table that had no chairs on the first evening. Ordered menu items were not delivered or incorrect items delivered on multiple occasions. The buffet on the other hand was quite good in selection and quality. Wine was delivered to our room with no means to uncork the bottles. I phoned to have the bottle uncorked. A cheap corkscrew was delivered for my use. Took me a while to figure how to make it work. The entertainment was good, however it seems there is a bias towards presenting comedy entertainment in the smaller rooms rather than production shows in the larger rooms. The casino experience overall was quite good with a variety of available table games. Getting a comp drink seems to be nearly impossible. Children's activities remain quite good. The priority boarding experience was excellent. The disembarkation process was a disaster. The boat arrived in port late with no reason provided nor were we given instructions regarding latest disembarkation meeting times and locations. "Priority" passengers were moved into disembarkation lines after some non-priority passengers had already disembarked. The fitness area is well equipped, although a number of treadmills and other machines were not completely fuctional. No room to stretch, and few mats available. Apparently Carnival customer service does not care to respond to survey complaints. A letter directed to the SVP Carnival Corporation Investor Relations remains unanswered. Read Less

3/16 to 3/24 West Indies cruise to Turks & Caicos, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts & St. Maartin (9 day). The ship was a lesson in contrasts. Overall, I prefer to take the smaller, older classes of cruise ships over the new mega-ships because I find the crowds more manageable. The Carnival Sunshine fills this desire perfectly. Sections of the boat are a bit dated and you can still feel the 1990's original construction in the common area, the casino, the small pool sizes and the bathrooms/staterooms. It's all very clean and in good repair, just feels like a well broken in decor all around. We stayed in cabin 7174, which is a U-type suite, for three people (My Wife and I and our seven year old). The room was spacious with a nice vanity area and a balcony overlooking the water around mid-ship. The only complaint about the cabin is the location with regard to special events and evening entertainments in the common room on deck 3. We turn in early and were kept awake most nights until after 11:00 pm.. Bring foam ear plugs. Thank God I did. Dining was actually better than I expected. I thought overall the dining rooms had better quality and tasting food than Royal Caribbean's mega-ships. That really surprised me. The lido deck serves average breakfast and lunch fare with the only complaint being a lack of variety with the same basic choices (especially breakfast). Tip: Visit the alchemy bar near the coffee shop next to the casino for a more un-crowded breakfast and lunch dining option. The main dining room had very good quality food and we had six pm dining. We did go to Fahrenheit 555 for dinner one night but wasn't impressed. My Wife's lobster tails were char grilled and burnt and my steak was average. We found a hair in one of the gummies that came with the "Chef's Art at the Table" dessert and couldn't eat it. When brought to staff's attention, nothing was done, so we left. The entertainments and activities were good, except for the lounge singers hired for the common area. The solo guitarist was always flat (cringe worthy vocals dude) and the Cheech and Chong looking duo were likewise awful. As to the daily activities, you'll just have to explore and find your own path. They were all good: Ocean club, the waterworks, the serenity pool deck, movie nights, magic show, comedians, main performers and Mikey the cruise director held it all in check. The service is excellent and the staff will go to great lengths to spoil you and make sure you're having a good time. We fell into a slightly scary experience with a tween-ager that was on the pool deck without adult supervision. My Wife and I had noticed the girl before at many of the events we'd taken our own daughter to (build a bear, ocean club, etc..) and she was oddly always alone with no parents in sight. Long story short, the girl slipped walking down the stairs from the hot tubs to the pool deck and whacked her head very hard against the steps (fell backward). Her towel and personal things were right next to me and she sat down very dazed and confused. Several parents and grandparents immediately asked if she was our daughter (she wasn't) and how they'd witnessed her fall, and after she failed to respond to our questions, we called cruise emergency 911. A nurse and the hospital wing staff arrived about a minute later, thoroughly questioned the adults that had witnessed her fall, realized she was probably concussed and safely moved her to a wheelchair to wheel her down to medical for further treatment and observation. I hope the girl was okay, we never did find out how she was but she was in good hands. I'd hate to see her parent's medical bill for it but the kid was fairly neglected by their absence for the cruise up to that point. Kudos to the medical staff for a fast response. We availed ourselves of excursions in three of the four ports, skipping San Juan for just a margarita at Senior Frogs and a walk up and down the port park. At Turks and Caicos, we took the glass bottomed boat tour and beach break and that was amazing. Beautiful unspoiled reefs and iced blue waters on a beautiful beach afterward. Free rum punch on the boat tour put all of us in a good mood. In St. Kitts, we did the rain forest 4x4 island tour and beach break. The rain forest area was full of monkeys and the elevated views of both sides of the island were breathtaking. The beach break was short (only an hour) and we spent it at the bar getting lunch. The last excursion we booked was the air conditioned bus tour in St. Maartin with lunch/beach break. Our driver showed us the level of devastation caused by Irma and Louis and both the French side and the Dutch side were totally ruined, but the French side on the Atlantic got it so much worse. Rebuilding continues but expect to see the remains of a horrible hurricane history. The driver stopped at a French side market to let us shop, then took us to a private beach near the airport (not the famous airport landing strip beach but very near it). Lunch was amazing (snapper) and there was an expansive crescent shaped ice blue water beach for us to swim in. Beautiful. Tips: Mid ship cabins around the common room elevators on deck 3 are a lot louder than you'd think for noise. Book fore or aft midship and you should have quiet. I'd totally book this cruise again. We were in hurricane Michael disaster from panama city ( cat 4, more 5ish) and needed time away knowing these other islands suffered like us 2 years ago. It was nice to see the recovery and beauty they restored with hope we will do the same. The staff on board were amazing. Comedian Chis W. was awesome and Mikey and staff were amazing. We felt so welcomed and my 3 kids enjoyed every minute of our experience. Would I travel again on Carnival Sunshine....oh whoot whoot hell yah! The team fun and entertainment were awesome, kids had camp....which they actually got mad when i had to pull them out for meals...everybody was friendly and awesome. So much entertainment. With over 3000 guests the crew quickly learned your names, kids, drinks of choice, and just fun things about you. They really made you feel like family. These memories with the crew will stay with my kids for a lifetime. Thank you! Read Less

This was my first time on the Sunshine. After just coming off the Breeze 4 months ago, it was shocking how much smaller this ship is. There are far too many passengers for the small space. Lines for lunch were far too long. Havana bar area is the best place to relax and eat. In general, the food was blah.....boring and no seasonings.....Carnival really needs to take the flavors up a notch. Desserts and breads were horrible. The Library area was always closed due to Chefs table dinners. Cruise director Mikey is awesome. Far better than CD on the Breeze. Curaçao was by far my favorite port. It is nice to be able to shop at places that are not the normal run of the mill cruise port shops. Balcony cabin was smaller than most, and cabin steward was not the best. The beach at Grand Turk is the best.....shopping it's the worst Read Less

My family chose this cruise because we wanted a 5 day cruise and we love Amber Cove. We have been on 10 or more cruises. We don't have high expectations. We just love to get away and relax and enjoy cruising. The Sunshine is in very good condition for an older ship. Here goes my opinion. The ship is much to small for the amount of people on board. It has been re-furbished. The serenity deck is awesome. The Havana Bar area is beautiful. The Lido marketplace have the least amount of food options of any cruise I have been on. The lines for Mongolian Wok and Blue Iguana at lunch were terrible. We noted some people waited as long as 30 minutes. Guys burgers are great. Crowded but the line moved fast. Main dining room good on the one night we attended. Had my time dining. No wait if you go early. Main pool area too small and not enough chairs for amount of passengers. If you went to a show you need to go at least 30 minutes early to get a seat. Very small area. I don't smoke but some family members do. Smoking area on deck 10 very small with very limited seating. The staff was pleasant but obviously to busy to be very personable except for our room steward who was great. Cruise Director was Mickey and he was great. Amber Cove is very beautiful and relaxing. Grand Turk seemed like more locals were following you around on the beach and harassing you to get chairs etc. I would definitely suggest an excursion at this port. I will continue to Cruise again with Carnival but not again on the Sunshine. Read Less

Pros: ports, crew, made to order food Cons: Too much walking, too many people, awful seasickness, terrible WiFi Ports were great, Dominican my favorite. Abject poverty behind Carnival’s front of shops and bars. Crew was great, all of them. We had an outstanding steward named Anthony. Made to order omelettes, Guy’s burgers, JiJi Asian, all fabulous. Just too much walking for me and people everywhere. Waited often to get on elevators. Unsupervised kids running amok. WiFi package useless, didn’t work. Very few quiet places on the ship. Not enough pools for all the people and people fighting over chairs on several decks. The ship was all over the place, bumping, creaking, rocking, bouncing, it was awful. Captain told us at one point to hold on to rails. High winds both ways. Missed captain’s dinner and last night of 80’s bands & trivia because of terrible seasickness and I was prepared with Seabands, meclizine, and ginger chews. Spent more time in stateroom than anywhere else unless at port. Showered only when ship was docked. First and last cruise. I didn’t pay all that money to feel like that. Know that if you go on a cruise you are at the mercy of the ocean. Cruise director just annoying at times to me like the Rachel Ray of cruise directors, constantly on the PA system, waking people up and making Carnival sound like they were the most fabulous trip in the world not knowing how many people were sick below on the decks. Really annoying. The crew works hard. There was a language barrier with some which could be a bit frustrating, but we managed. Read Less

We chose this one for the itinerary, and the dates worked with us. We enjoyed the ports, especially Grand Turk and San Juan. We bought a ship excursion in St Kitts...kayak and snorkel, we were not impressed. Although the tour company worked hard, we suffered because the ship docked an hour late and were rushed the whole time, plus we did not stop at the lookout spot at all. The kayaking was fine, but very short and simple, we went just along the shoreline to a really crowded man made grassy lagoon with some boulders dropped in to form a breakwall and colonized by some very basic fish. Zero coral to speak of, though we did see a turtle, which was great. After that stop we were sent further down the shoreline to wait for over an hour at a beach (with a tiny bit of sliced fruit and water )for the pickup ride back. We would have swam and enjoyed it a bit more but were told that the van ride was coming right away. No change rooms, bar or facilities here anyway. Buyer beware on this one, not worth the money. Otherwise we enjoyed the cruise. We were always able to find a spot to sit on a chair on board, the food was good , burgers fantastic. Buffet pretty small, however, and just repeated 4x. Could have done with a few more selections. This was my 4th cruise with 3 companies, first with Carnival. The free coffee was the best yet! Still not wonderful but drinkable! Drinks were pretty expensive but probably standard. We don't buy a drink package but you can tell who does....although after the first couple of days the drunken folks had totally calmed down and the people on board were basically the same as any other cruise. The shows were the best part. The performers were very talented The cruise director kept the entertainment flowing well The staff was accommodating when asked. The dining experience was poor in the dining room. A few too many cold over cooked foods for our small group of four One guest needed special food preparations due to food allergies The food was not prepared as well as it had been on other ships The choices were limited and were often served plain without flavor We booked 3 excursions through Carnival basically bus tours due to the mobility of one of our group. These tours always depend on the tour guide you get Unfortunately we did not luck out with oue San Juan tour. He was not very good.not engaging at all Our guide in St Kitts was informative and you felt at ease to ask questions The last was of St Martin the bus driver as well as the tour guide were very good. We chose this ship to go on a cruise with some of the members of our car club. 5 couples chose this ship because of the itinerary. My husband and I have had 15 cruises total. Most with Carnival, a few with RC and 1 with Celebrity. The overall experience was excellent. The speed of embarking and debarking has much improved. We were off by 9:00 am (self) and made our 12 pm flight. The cabin steward, Blessing, really made our week, he new all 10 of our names within the first day! He was very cheerful. We had an interior(inside, inside) cabin, 4E category. It was much larger than the regular interior rooms. There was an improvement with the food in the main dining rooms. Only one night was my steak overcooked. Our head waiter Hadi was excellent! We asked for him every night, which meant waiting longer for a table. The one night we did not have Hadi we had a horrible head waiter. Entertainment has been the same for several years and I wish they would mix up the shows or add new ones. The comedians were good and the Magician/Illusionist had us hooked! The Piano Bar was a disappointment, she did not have a clue as to how to do a Piano Bar. She sang well, but she did not really entertain us like you should at a Piano Bar. She was too prim and proper, did not know many old favorites. The other bands were really nice to listen to after dinner. This ship DOES have self service laundromats. We rented a jeep on St Maarten and had a good time. But I suggest getting a GPS as the map is hard to follow. I thought we were on one side of the island when we were actually somewhere else. Leave time for coming back in to port as there is a lot of traffic with 5 ships in port! Our cruise director MIKEY was excellent and really made a great cruise. I don't know when he sleeps. Read Less

I have cruised with Carnival a number of times. This was to be my big 60 birthday cruise. I can go out of Baltimore but decided to try the Sunshine, plus it was a premiere cruise. What a total disappointment. The staff is way over worked and this is why things are not up to standard of Carnival ( surely not the fault of the staff). I run a hotel and know that service is effected by a over worked staff. The blame starts at the top. 1. 45 min to get a drink in the Casino. 2. cigarettes overflowing in ash trays 3. being told I needed to drag my luggage up the gang to the ship to my room, with a disabled sister with me. 4. liquor being left in our room that was purchased by someone else but my sister wrote them a note leaving it under the door of the guest telling them where to find their purchases. 5. shore excursions at St Kit (beach day at Carambola Beach Club ) was the worst !!! 20 min there I got a ride back to port.. My sister contacted the shore excursion desk ship, said they would contact me later that day, guess what no contact by anybody. 6. I only saw the casino host, and I am guessing that was her conducting the Premier Cruise one time. Never out in the Casino checking on guest. I could go on but I think you understand where I am coming from. I will be sailing again in June on the Pride, where I always feel welcome. I have not judged Carnival as a whole on one ship. But I will say this management better get a handle because I know for a fact I was not the only guest to feel this way. Its sad to be so excited about a trip and come away so disappointed.. Read Less

I usually book my cruise based on Itinerary, then read reviews after so I know what to expect. After reading those reviews on this ship, I thought I had a picture.. But after cruising it was way better than expected. I'd like to address some rumors I've read. -Sewer & other smells in hallways: Never smelled anything at Anytime. Whatever was there, if anything, they fixed it. Even Casino Smoke was under control and isolated to casino as far as I could tell. - Age and Condition of ship: Yes its a 20+ year old ship, and shows its age in a few places, but it is WELL Maintained for its age.. I've been on newer ships in worse shape than the Sunshine. -Rocking & Rolling? This ship performed better at sea than most ships I've been on before. Nothing out of the ordinary here. -Decor & Public areas: Well Above average for Carnival The ports of call were the best I've ever been on. (San Juan, G.Turk, St. Maarten, St Kits) Did the Pier Beach thing in Gr.Turk, (awesome), port explored in San Juan and at Kitts. And took a bus to Maho Beach in St. Maarten and did some plane watching. Took the kids to Camp Ocean most of the days. They begged to go, and never wanted to leave. Best thing ever. The CO staff were always very friendly and nice. They really enjoyed it there. Mikey the Cruise director was chippie but mostly bland. His assistant sounded looked like she had just rolled out of bed most of the time. I usually enjoy and look forward to the Morning Show on sea days but oh boy what a energetic group these folks were on this cruise. pun intended.. Embarkation was the fastest ever. Arrived exactly at appointment time and walked right on the ship! Debarkation was average. Waited about 30 min but very smooth. Everything else: Buffet is average as expected for Carnival. They have some really good stuff and some ok stuff. Breakfast was the same every day as usual, but plenty of options to choose from. As for lunch, the options are better than for the dinner. Excellent lunch options daily in several places. I'd just wish they would keep the Blue Iguana Tacos stand open longer. It closes just way too early. I stopped doing MDR service a few cruises ago. Service is just too slow. Just not worth the wait. If Carnival didn't make the waiters dance and sing so much maybe they could do there job as servers. It's unfortunate because the Dinner buffet is nowhere near as good as the Lunch. (and everything else is closed) I really wanted to do the JiJi's kitchen one night but never got around to it. Also I noticed, there was never a line at any time I went through the buffet, as the Lido is smaller on this ship than others I've been on. Ship was not crowded after the first day. I was worried it would be after the tons of rooms Carnival added after the Destiny>Sunshine re-fit. On the first day there was the usual newbies wandering around lost and slowing things down. The ship does have a couple of pedestrian choke points (by Guys Burgers on Lido and the same on the other side by Blue Iguana) I'm sure Carnival is aware of this but there's not much you can do about it due to the layout. But after the first couple of days these eased up a lot. It's ashamed they are moving this ship to 4-5 day cruises in the future. Because if it were on longer 7-8 day South & East Caribbean i'd go on it again. That's why I chose this cruise in the first place. I go on a cruise to relax and see new places. Not to sit by the pool listening to loud music and get sunburned. I can do that at home. Carnival please OFFER MORE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN CARIB PORTS OF CALL! And lastly, To Carnival: BIGGER SHIPS ARE NOT ALWAYS BETTER!! You don't have to do what the other brands are doing and make bigger and bigger ships. Its not worth it. Take note: The Sunshine is perfect in every way. thank you Read Less
