Cabin BA201- Can’t get the cabin temp below 72F. Have asked four times with no luck. Never accomplished. Cabin temp in direct line of AC flow did get to 70 at times if kept the balcony store closed and curtains pulled - Aussie sized (half size) whirl pool bathtub with high sides. Tub has rusted water drain, marked, and needs to be replaced. If you are 6 ft 2 in height and want to lie in the bathtub your feet will be on the wall. - Good shower - Marked toilet seat and needs to be replaced - Felt engine vibration, but not a problem for sleeping except when docking. Will wake you up if light sleeper - Counter space tight in bathroom but workable - No hot water during the night after 11:00 or 12:00 (last few days of cruise this problem was corrected) - Clothes Closet with safe tight but got everything in. Suitcases store under the bed - very nice decor - Otherwise good cabin which we enjoyed and would use again if they solve the AC problem and make required replacements Food- Reservation mistake. Ended up early fixed but was easy to change to open, deck 7. Staff very accommodating i.e. Hery main dining room, open sitting excellent, allowing us to change each night seating 2, 4, & 6 seat table. Met many interesting enjoyable passengers - Room service is excellent but coffee table for eating is tight - Mainly using dining room for dinner and lunch. Lido for breakfast and each time go on tour have breakfast in cabin. Food very good - Main dining room choice in menu is limited, often going off menu to french onion soup and salmon, both of which very good. - Had two dinners and one lunch in the Pinnacle Grill. Excellent food and service - Had one dinner in the Italian restaurant. Good service but not my preference in food. Cancelled our second reservation - Service in dining room ranged from very good to excellent Wine- I could not believe it. Limited Aussie wines and continually running out of wines. We are lucky and enjoy the New Zealand Kim Crawford, our favorite at home. Some of wine stewards attentive/ excellent. One or two were not and needed prodding $$$ - Ship nickels and dimes you i.e. purchase bottle water, purchase coffee lattes, extra charge for lobster even in Pinnacle Grill, expensive internet but is unlimited usage= did not have to worry about time spent, a huge feature for me since I needed to keep in touch with family company Reception staff- needs better training. Are pleasant but often without answers. Exception is Vanessa Digital Workshop- Unable to connect my laptop to the web. Written instructions provided by ship do not work for my Dell. Had to use Vanessa to set up computer. Good instructor on first leg but did not have the desired depth of knowledge i.e. could not set up my laptop for internet. Second leg instructor more knowledgeable and was great Entertainment- Ship has moved emphasis from shows to lectures, many of which were good to excellent - Piano man in piano bar was very good. Had several enjoyable evenings - Entertainment in Crows Nest Good - Good shows- i) Chinese lady playing special accordion was excellent. ii) Jersey Boys had good voices but needed a program manager. iii) Comedian good iv) musician playing several instruments was very good v) Magicians not to our liking Wake up call- always have a backup. One time did not work. One day unable to make wake up call. Line just ring busy. Staff who made a difference • Vanessa Christopher- Supervisor front desk • Rinato- Person in charge of room service • Adhy & Sigit- Persons who looked after cabin - Gym- fully equipped. Excellent. Had an air conditioning problem and had to use an industrial fan to attempt to lower temperature. 360 degree promenade for fast walking exercise or just casual walking at sea. 4 times around is a mile Rain water penetration- encountered a couple evenings of heavy rain, resulting in water getting into several cabins (rumored 35?) Sanitation- for both legs of the trip many passengers including myself came down with a heavy cold. I had to go to ship doctor for medication but still took 1.5 weeks to fully recover. When a ship has such an attack, normal experience is that procedure in buffet restaurant is changed from self serve to staff behind the counter serving you while you are in line for food. Not the case on the Maasdam. Only concern. Ship, which is old, was clean at all times Ship air conditioning- needs to be upgraded if they plan to use this ship in hot climates Ship decor- well done Ship layout- no problems except when coming out from deck 7 main dining room you have to either go down one deck or up one deck to walk to theater at front of ship Embarkation & Disembarkation- good Ports- we are on board because of the itinerary and tied in with our two months in Perth escaping Toronto winter - getting off the ship when ship tendered was backed up; but not a problem. We never missed our many private tours - many times docked at an industrial port and only a few times were there a ship shuttle into city/ town. Was never a problem since we were always on private tours Cruise Critic- there was approx 100 of us on the first leg. HAL missed an excellent opportunity to have officers attend the Meet & Greet, which was often our experience on other ships. Ruth did an excellent job in running the Meet and Greet, and web site on Cruise Critic allowing us to arrange private tours in almost all of the ports, with more tailored itinerary than Hal excursions and saved money. Great memories and wonderful passengers met Conclusion- good very interesting cruise notwithstanding the high temperatures. If you can take high temperatures would recommend, assuming ship solves the noted problems. Many sea days in itinerary were great for sleeping in and relaxing. Still looking for a holiday cruise where ship arrival is 9- 10 AM and departure early evening allowing me to be on holidays, not having to get up early for excursions Further info- drop me a note at deangayle@rogers.com and will try to provide i.e. private tours Read Less

Firstly I’ll say this was our second cruise. Our first was on The Dawn Princess July 2016 which was possibly the best holiday I’ve ever had.So it took 2 years of working overtime and saving hard to cruise with Princess again.I lived for it ! Boy what a difference. I cannot say we didn’t enjoy our cruise,we did but there was a lot of little things that added up to disappointment. Embarkation was smooth and easy. Our inside cabin was as expected and fine.We boarded at 12.30. We had 2 suitcases and a holdall bag with soft drinks with us,we had both suitcases delivered to the cabin but the bag was missing. Our Steward tried to locate the bag to no avail. At 9pm ish we telephoned the service desk and were asked to come down to get the bag. When we got down they asked us to sit in the atrium area and wait for security, so the guy comes with the bag and asked us to open it,now I understand all about the naughty room which is fair enough but there was other passengers enjoying drinks etc. all around us .. looking. There was nothing in our bag that shouldn’t have been. It was one of the most embarrassing situations I’ve ever been in and brought me to tears. We did complain afterwards but they just didn’t seem to care. So that rant over. Other things we noticed .. sitting at The riviera bar area the tables were rarely cleaned and always messy.Although the staff were friendly and attentive in other ways we cleaned our own tables. On tropical night there was no decorations on deck,no atmosphere. The food in Horizon court was very repetitive and dull. We hardly ever saw the cruise director, on the Dawn the CD mingled with passengers a lot more.A few days into the cruise they ran out of our favourite beer, not reordering because of dry dock coming up I think. We had an excursion booked with Princess to visit the Petronas towers,we received a letter to the cabin saying that because it was a public holiday in KL the itinerary was changed to KL tower. We felt this excursion was not to the same value but we weren’t offered any part refund. We had 4 ports in a row, we got off and on with ease.We had a lot of rain and couldn’t enjoy the pool, nobody’s fault, and then 1 sea day before disembarking in Singapore. On that sea day the weather brightened up and preparations for dry dock started all around us, it was like they were taking the ship apart while we tried to eat, tried to enjoy our last day, tried to come back new ! They even emptied half the water from the pool.I am trying to have faith this may have been a one off disappointing cruise because of dry dock. We are booked to visit NZ on the Golden next year,I can only hope it’s a major improvement or that will be our last with Princess. Read Less

we enjoy new places to see. Cruising is a good holiday for someone with limited mobility always someone to help you. We enjoyed the onboard lectures on ports and topic of interest, more so than active activities. We thought that hygiene update( directed to new wash basins at entrance to buffet) was very good as we have been on one cruise where a virus infected 1/3 of the passengers. Would enjoy more ports of around our country. Choose ports where there are no tenders as Phuket was booked out for an along side birth and the sea was very rough making passengers on the return trip very sick as we bobbed around in the sea waiting for 2 other tenders to board in such rough conditions. We were out there waiting for our tun to unload up to an hour. Beware of cost of port transport from ship to hotel, use local taxis rather than ship organized transport very much cheaper. Read Less

We had cruised with Celebrity Cruises in the past and had been pleased we had.Liked the ports of call on this relaxing cruise. Food was great as was the service. Good choice of restaurants and bars as you would expect from Celebrity. We had great service from our cabin and dining stewards. The staff everywhere were obliging and friendly. Embarkation was hassle free and we were on board within the half hour from our arrival at the port. Our stateroom was ready within a short time after embarkation which was good. We were on the waiting list for My Time Dining before the cruise. Once on board we saw the concierge and no problem being reassigned to my time from the 8:30pm which was great as we were able to dine with our friends. We had done a similar cruise calling at some of the same ports but this was not a problem as you can't see eveything in the one day so visiting again was not a problem. All in all a good cruise from a great Cruise line. Read Less

This was a getaway for a group of friends. It was a marvellous time, going to Albany and back. The food was amazing every night, could not be faulted. I definitely recommend the Astor for people looking for a wonderful relaxing time. We were lucky enough to have an upgrade and got a small suite on the Atlantic deck, which was an unexpected surprise. The shows in the Astor lounge were fantastic, I really enjoyed the ABBA show, and throughout the day there were quizzes, bingo, and in the afternoon music from various members of the entertainment group. One of the members of our group had a significant birthday and the crew provided her with a cake and a number of staff singing happy birthday to her. Which was a huge surprise to her, however she really appreciated the moment. This is not a cruise ship with casino, huge pools etc, which is not something I was looking for, but if that is what you want, the Astor is not for you. This was my second time on the Astor and I will be back again, thank you very much Read Less

We wanted to experience Christmas on a cruise ship and we live in Perth so seemed the best option. The ship was great and the food good but we experienced bad weather going out and a cyclone coming back so that put a damper on it.The entertainment staff were absolutely amazing and kept us entertained most of each day. They worked very very hard. Our room was comfy and spacious with plenty of storage space. We bought the drinks package which was well worth it as it included half price coffees and tomato juice which we had a lot of(bloody or virgin) . We are not seasick travelers so that didn't worry us but it did a lot of others. This of course is not the cruise company's fault but if I went again I would choose a calmer time of the year and forget about Christmas. The best part were the shows and quizzes Read Less

This was our first cruise and I was really worried, due to the reviews that I had read. I was absolutely pleasantly surprised how fantastic the cruise was. None of the reviews that I had read previously, applied to our experience. Cabin was great, bedding was comfy, food was fantastic, even though we only ate at the pantry, but I have to say, probably the best fish and chips I have ever eaten. Entertainment was fantastic. The only thing that might have room for improvement, would be the smoking sections. There could me more of them and some chairs might be good. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and the ship and would definitely go again. Also I have to say embarkation and disembarkation worked like clockwork and so well organised. Onto the ship within 5 - 10 minutes and off the ship within 5 minutes. The services staff was also very helpful and friendly. Service with a smile!!!!! Read Less

We disembarked from the Pacific Eden last Monday and feel that some feedback is definitely necessary. P&O used to have a fabulous reputation when we lived in the UK but this experience has seriously undermined that expectation. The location of our cabin was very disappointing - please see below. The constant queuing for everything is totally painful. Queuing like cattle to possibly be able to book a "speciality" or even the standard Waterfront restaurant and if you are not fortunate enough to get in on time to book after queuing for over an hour (on a daily basis) you can queue at the pantry food court which has insufficient seating when you want to eat. This could be easily remedied by allowing pre-booking prior to boarding and would also allow for a fairer allocation of slots. This was a Food and Wine cruise and the quality of the food was extremely disappointing. This opinion is based on the Waterfront, Dragon Lady and the Pantry as we were unable to get a booking at Angelo's. Portions were small, food was cold (especially in the Pantry) and the taste was lacking. It appears P&O are cutting costs under the guise of an improved dining experience. Many stations in the Pantry were understaffed causing even longer queues. The kids club was oversubscribed and full despite the booking website advising that numbers in each age group were limited. Therefore, restricting our ability to attend the seminars etc. Staff seem to be pretty miserable and are not keen to do anything other than the bare minimum especially in the bars. Is this due to the lack of tips on offer? Some positives: High Tea in Salt was very good. ($20 per head on sea days) Bed was comfy - shame our sleep was so disturbed! Cabin service and cleanliness was good. Entertainment was good but again the venues were often too small for the numbers who wanted to take part. The entertainment staff could have easily utilised the pool deck as the retractable roof and ample seating made it a very pleasant area which would have been way less congested than the ocean bar. Decor was pleasant. The gym is a decent size and well equipped. All in all this experience was far from 'Like no Place on Earth' and it is unlikely that we would choose to cruise with P&O ever again based on the short "break" we have just had. Read Less

Having cruised with P&O in the past it was a no brainer to book this cruise when I came across the incredible deals they were offering. Some reviews of the ship would have you think that Pacific Eden is a floating pile of rust that serves up food worse than you'd get in prison - this couldn't be further from the truth! Whilst the ship doesn't fall in to the category of 5-star (nor does P&O try to sell it as 5-star) it is a beautiful, well kept ship with a more classic layout and design. Whilst smaller than your modern super liner, she is by no means tiny and offers up ample public spaces for passengers to relax in and partake in activities. Food options are plenty and of a high quality with three all inclusive restaurant options (The Waterfront, Angelo's Italian and The Dragon Lady), one set price restaurant (The Salt Grill), The Pantry (a healthier, cleaner take on your classic cruise ship buffet) and the Ocean Grill (Pizza's, Burgers, Nacho's etc for a small price). Highlights for me were The Dragon Lady's second menu and The Salt Grill where we ended up eating on two occasions. It's worth every cent! The Pantry is also a huge improvement on the old buffet style setup for three reasons - 1) There is a lot more choice 2) It was evident that from looking around there was a lot less waste as portions were somewhat controlled (with that being said, if you wanted more you could ask for it and the servers would happily oblige) 3) It is significantly healthier as food isn't being handled by hundreds of passengers The Entertainment staff were great and highly visible throughout the cruise. The original shows were of a higher standard than I have seen on P&O in the past and the activities on offer seemed to keep everyone engaged on sea days. The only thing I would say was a negative on the entertainment side of things was the poor quality of the comedians. There are better comedians out there than ones who get their jokes off of the internet! The only shore tour we booked through the ship was for Komodo Island as it was required due to the World Heritage Site restrictions imposed on the island. The Tendering process was wall organised and involved very little waiting around. Once on the island the English speaking guides were very interactive and informative and made it an overall enjoyable, once in a lifetime experience. In summary if you're looking for great quality and value, P&O cruises are for you. If not, spend the extra money to cruise with someone else or quit your whinging. Some of the reviews on here are appalling and incredibly misleading. Comparing Princess, Celebrity or Holland America with P&O is not comparing apples with apples. I have never had a bad experience with P&O (nor Celebrity or Star) and will continue to sing their praises and recommend them to family and friends. P.S. I hope that Marius one day gets the Australian passport he so desperately desires Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was its first time in Australia they over emphasised the fact because when we got on our interpretation from the advertising was different the services were appauling. When we embarked we waited 3 hrs just to embark the line was huge and there was no effort to keep the line moving. We eventually got on and on one of the nights the ship movement was bad mostly everyone was sick, a ship like this isn't designed for Australian waters, during the night of a couple of the nights the noise from the ocean was bad as the walls and windows aren't sound resistent. Our stateroom attendant was very helpful all the way through and was very assitive. The food was appauling as they all had similar or same menus , windjammer was just basic and waiting for resturants was dissapointing. The cruise was good for those injured on crutches or in a wheeelchair as they would get priority. Entertainment for kids was good but to line up for activities was rediculous we waited 1 and a half hrs for bumper cars , had to book for Ifly, limited availability for roller skating sessions. Being on deck 3 was terrible as you could here everything. I would never travel on this ship again and it was my children's first time so we were dissapointed and unsure whether we would cruise again with royal Caribbean. Read Less

We chose the Sun Princess for my wife's birthday weekend away. Never been on a weekend cruise before and after this experience probably wont again. Don't want to waste too much time on this as too much of our time has already been wasted on the Sun Princess. Excited passengers board the Sun Princess head to the closest bar to have a celebratory drink only to find most bars are closed and the only 2 bars open had queues with up to 45 minute waits for a drink. I thought this must be just a one-off but no it was a sign of more queues and more waiting for the remainder of the cruise with many disgruntled passengers wondering what they did to deserve this poor sub standard service. Most passengers stayed on the cruise rather than disembark at geographe bay.... poor decision as once gain most bars closed and massive waiting time in queues and of course there was always the amazing day activities to participate in while on the boat.... thats of course if you are into Bible Studies or needlepoint stiching !!!! Woops almost forgot...no hot water on final morning so a nice cold shower as a final farewell from The Sun Princess. Read Less
