This was a birthday present for my 60th birthday and something I always wanted to do. My family sent myself and my husband on a Danube river cruise on the Viking Prestige. My husband wasn't that keen as doesn't enjoy organised trips and finds cruising a not particularly sustainable holiday choice but agree to go. He was also concerned that it would not be active enough for us, The trip was enjoyable but alas it was extremely regimental in many respects particularly the excursions which didn't leave you with any free time and the meal times (dinner was always a rush to find a seat which wasn't that relaxing) and the fact that most of the excursions started so early in the day that you didn't real feel like you were on holiday. If you like that sort of holiday then this is more for you. We were disappointed at the lack of daylight cruising and the distances the boat moored at some destinations. The highlights of the trip were the river cruising during the day, especially going through the river locks and the free time we spent wandering around the towns when choosing not to go on some excursions. The staff on the ship were pleasant but as this was towards the end of the season were a bit jaded. The food was nice but nothing that special and the wine pretty generic most of the time. The cabin was pleasant and I realised later that we were lucky to be on the Prestige as the cabins seem to be slightly larger than most of the later built Viking ships. Anything smaller would have been a real squeeze. Overall we had a pleasant time and there are no significant complaints but the trip you experience is not really the one presented in the Viking documents or advertisements. Read Less

I went along on this cruise with my mother and her partner, not expecting a lot. I'd heard about the big ocean cruises which are like crowded, floating malls full of drunk people, and a million a la carte expenses: taking a cruise sounded like the last thing I'd ever want to do. Well below a root canal. But this was absolutely wonderful. Everything was taken care of, from flights to pick up at the airport to transfers after. We did two cruise extensions, Munich and Salzburg, and had a wonderful guide, Maya, who kept track of us, answered every question, filled us in on lots of local tidbits, history, and interesting facts. We were able to relax and enjoy the experience. The other people on our extension days moved onto the cruise with us, so we already knew people when we got on board. Dining is open seating, so you end up meeting people and making friends very easily. The food was absolutely delicious, and as we traveled down river, the chef presented local options so that we were able to taste our way through the various countries. (Hats off to Attila, the executive chef!) The ship itself was beautiful and comfortable, and spotlessly clean. And no one under 18, so no children dashing up and down the hall screaming. Whew. Way to bring a nice cruise out of warp speed. And really, no drunk young adults screaming in the halls either. (Vegas - shudder.) Just perfect peace! And no extra expenses except hard liquor (beer and wine provided), and special shore excursions. But no surprises at all on the money front! (I had a friend get handed a drink when she got on hercruise ship, and then found a $10 charge on her bill later. No one likes to be a mark!) The captain was very nice, and offered an interesting introduction to the ship and wheelhouse, showed us how the ship sailed... or motored, the technical array, etc. The front desk staff were *saints*. My mother is quite elderly, and didn't know her energy level until a little while before a shore excursion, and the staff who arranged those activities added us at the last minute several times, even though I know they had to reprint everything. And they always had a "gentle" option with shorter distances, fewer/no stairs, minimal cobblestones. That was a lifesaver for us, since my Mom can't walk very fast or far. The shore excursions (there was one included one at every stop, so no surprise costs there) were amazing. I visited a farm in Austria, made bread, and then while the bread was baking, went to the Mittendorfer Distillery for a tour (yum), and then back to the farm for a lunch of our bread and homemade sides and home cured meats and cheeses. We did a home visit in Bratislava that was really a highlight. It was delightful to meet and talk with locals, and the couple's 12-year-old girl had a little business selling her own homemade soaps, so I was able to buy something really, really local for my daughters. There are too many shore excursions to list them all here, but they were all good. So: The food was amazing. The ambiance was peaceful and lovely. The staff were great. The activities were well-planned, interesting, and educational. I'd love to go again, pretty much anywhere on any cruise they offer. I heard rumors that they are talking about doing some American cruises, maybe down the Mississippi. I'd do that in a heart beat. I'd do the Columbia River, too, even though I live only a couple of miles from it. I know I'd have a great time and learn a lot. Read Less

Overall we had an enjoyable Danube river cruise, from Passau to Budapest, with a 3 day pre cruise stop in Prague. Danube water levels were fine and we had no issues going through the locks. Food was very good and plentiful, service was top notch. Boris, the cruise director was adequate although a little on the sarcastic side. The cabin was clean and roomy enough. On board entertainment was a decent piano player. Outside singers/musicians were brought on board a couple of nights and were enjoyable. My only complaint with the musicians is that I prefer that they stick to their traditional music. On night we heard My Way and another night it was Take me home, country Roads. REALLY! I believe the best part of the Viking experience are the guides that they hire for the daily excursions. They were all wonderful, very knowledgeable and extremely passionate about their country. We took the Panoramic tours in Prague, Vienna and Budapest, the all day tour to Cesky-Krumlov (an enchanted medieval town) and the Heurigan evening in Vienna. My problem comes in at the end. Our flight home to the US was cancelled. Viking Air, which we booked our flight through, was no help whatsoever. The service desk on the ship said they emailed Viking Air and we would hear from them. They never did. The goal of Viking was to get your off the ship ASAP by telling you to go to the airport. Basically, get out of here and deal with the airline at the airport. We couldn’t get out of Budapest for 2 days so going to the airport, which we did not do, would have futile. We stayed on the ship as long as possible and rebooked a flight through the airline, then got a hotel, Budapest Marriott (which was superb) in town. Viking needs to be upfront with their clients and tell them to contact the airline about your cancelled flight. Claiming they will help you is nonsense Read Less

Have been ocean cruising for a few years now and thought we would give river cruising a try. We saw Jane Mcdonald on a Danube river cruise, liked the itinery, so started looking around. Viking seemed to get a lot of excellent reviews, nothing negative that we could find, so we booked with them. First off, they posted a nice personalised brochure to us. I logged onto their website and reserved our trips-don't worry if you forget this, you are automatically reserved on each of the included excursions and can change these at anytime, even on board. The meet up with the Viking rep at the airport and coach trip to the ship is very smooth.Once on the coach you won't touch your luggage again until its delivered to your cabin. On arrival we were shown around the ship and our cabin, and (depending on the time you arrive) were directed to a wine and cheese tasting event to get things going. The cabin was bigger than I expected, at least the same as on ocean cruises. Spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. Bottled water every day. Food was very good. Great choices with local variations at each port. Wine and beer included with every lunch and dinner. Waiters are mainly Philippino, very cheerful and clearly enjoy working for Viking. Nothing is too much trouble. Entertainment is obviously different to on an ocean cruise but the singers, musicians, and Tim our entertainment Director, are of very good quality and perfect for a ship of this size. Be prepared to join in, it makes for a great evening. Tim must eat Duracell batteries for breakfast, he's a human dynamo. The excursions are excellent, they run so smoothly and are fabulous. Water bottles are handed out as you leave the ship, so no getting dehydrated. No photographer on board (hooray! ), no sales pitches,no gym, a small onboard shop for those who collect memorabilia. Basically, what you pay for the cruise is virtually all you need to budget for, no nasty surprises. And no children on board! We are definitely using Viking again, we only need to decide where to go! This was our first River Cruise and one has to remember it's very different from the large liners which we're used to! Cabins smaller, but adequately furnished with well stocked toiletries in the bathroom. Excellent quality linen and towels and comfy bed (far superior than those in the Hilton in Budapest at the end of the cruise). All the staff were wonderful; so polite, friendly, professional - all the positives. In all the service was excellent. A lovely large deck to sit out on and a quiet library at the back. The dining room was light and airy and food very good. The wines and other drinks (especially the Bellinas!) were excellent. A lounge for entertainment which was very good in the evening, in particular the Dancing Quiz - brilliant!!! A tea/coffee etc. station available outside the lounge, not practical for first thing in the morning. As many, or as few tours could be taken as one wishes. If not, sit in peace on the sun deck and relax. A lot of little touches were provided: face towels when arriving back on board, little drinks when arriving late at night in Budapest. The only downside I can think of was the arrival at Munich for the onward drive to Passu. Left didn't seem to know what the right was doing and we were left hanging around in the airport and outside waiting for the coaches. No one came with us on the coach, hence we weren't told what was going to happen. Relief came when we saw the ship. Also, beforehand our travel agent had been informed by Viking that we may be upgraded to a Verandah suite. Upon looking at the ship, I didn't see any Verandah suites. I would travel with Viking again, especially if Boris was the Programme Director - he was brilliant. Thank you Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary and timing within the year so that 14 of us could take a family trip. (Parents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Friends). The Viking reservation and airfare staff were wonderful in helping us to coordinate such a large group trip. Besides the great excursions, scenic sailing, and wonderful food, it was the ship’s staff that truly made this experience the trip of a lifetime. Everyone knew we were a large group and went out of their way to accommodate us for meals together and to keep us together for the various excursions. The system for shore excursions is so well organized. The hearing devices for the tour worked well so that you could hear the tour guide without having to be right next to them. In other words, you could wonder off a bit taking photos but still hear the guide. We can’t say enough about the staff. The dining staff knew our likes and dislikes almost within the first day. Thank you to our waiters Viktor, Sarah, and Miroslav for great dining experiences. They were so great during our first meal that we made sure to sit in their section for lunch and dinner the rest of the trip! Sasha took care of our room meticulously. By the time we came back from breakfast, the room would be cleaned and the bed made. Korana went out of her way to help me shop on another Viking ship that had different clothing and she offered to gift wrap a necklace I purchased as well. Ivana, the Hotel Manager, always had a smile greeting us as we got back from our excursions. She answered guests questions and kept everything in excellent order. Boris, the Program Director, provided insight and information about our upcoming experiences, and he did this with great enthusiasm and lots of humor. Emil, the Maitre D, made sure the meal and beverage services were top notch. Lagos, the Captain, provided a detailed tour of the bridge and how he navigates the ship with such great skill. We would definitely go again on a Viking River cruise and would hope to see the same wonderful staff! Read Less

This was our first river cruise and having read some very different reviews was sceptical, Viking did not disappoint!! On arrival in Munich found one of our bags to be missing. On stepping onboard the concierge department took it upon themselves to resolve the issue and it arrived next day just before we were due to sail - thanks again. The ship itself may not be the most modern in fleet but all areas were kept in pristine condition. The food was first class in both the restaurant and the Aquavit Terrace. Boris, Cruise Director gave presentations each evening on the included excursions which were good and never demanding. A mention to Jay in the bar who was very attentive to all patrons and on first name terms within a couple of days - spot on for customer service! A great trip and will not be our last with Viking. We enjoyed the cruise extension in Prague. The food on board was excellent. The bartenders and servers knew our names by the end of the first day. The included excursions were also excellent. All of our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. We booked several extra excursions centered on food and wine. These were also excellent. Our only complaint about our entire experience was the short layover in Toronto. We almost missed our flight to the USA because of the long lines at Customs. Otherwise, it was a trip of a lifetime. Entry into Budapest at night was an amazing experience. We had lunch at the Central Market. We had the best ever chicken paprikash with spaetzle. The shoe memorial in Budapest along the Danube was a moving experience. Both Prague and Vienna were beautiful. Read Less

Our desire to take a river cruise was always on our bucket list. We wanted to cruise the Danube and Rhine rivers. One out of two so far. A delightful experience. The boat/ cabin was very comfortable, crew very amiable, knowledgeable and helpful, cuisine delicious and shore excursions varied and fun. What stood out the most was the friendly nature of the crew. At every moment someone was there to help understand where we were, what we should be looking for or just for friendly conversation. Fellow travelers were fun; meeting people from around the world is always educational and expanding ones perspective. Shore excursions were well planned and carried out. Our most enjoyable excursion was to the town of Czny Krumlov. Charming town in a beautiful country. Seeing countries previously behind the Iron Curtain was very eyeopening. All in all a very wonderful time. Looking forward to our next cruise. Read Less

I was extremely disappointed with this trip and it was # 1 on my bucket list for many years. Viking knew that the Danube was getting lower and lower by the day due to a severe drought. Instead of allowing us to postpone the trip to next year we were forced to disembark in Vienna and take a 4+ hour bus ride to Budapest. By the time we finished lunch we had only a couple of hours to tour the city by bus. The reason I took this tour was because I wanted to see Budapest. All I have are photos shot from the bus window and some lovely pics of the castle where we were left to go shopping. We signed up for the leisure tours because my husband has some mobility issues. I had to run up and tell the tour guide to slow down various times because half of the group were 3 blocks behind. Aside from a few good meals the food was horrible and the pastries were tasteless. There was a horrible stench of sewage being dumped in the river. I cut my finger on a very sharp knife that was left on the buffet for us to cut the bread. Why couldn't the bread be cut by one of the chefs? According to my doctor I have a 50% chance that it will heal correctly. If Viking is the best river cruise I would hate to see the worst. Read Less

Our room was maintained by a young man that went out of his way to provide us with service beyond our expectation. The Dining facilities were well organized and the servers were very attentive to our requests. We truly appreciated the water provided each day as we headed off on our excursion. The Highlight of our trip was to wake up each morning and looking out the window and seeing the beautiful countryside and quaint villages. Would I travel with viking again? Absolutely! After a great experience last year with Viking's Rhine River Cruise, we decided to sign up for the Danube Cruise. As with our previous cruise, we were not disappointed! Great service! Great food! Great crew! Great entertainment! Great land excursions! Local guides were very knowledgeable and provided much history of the areas. Enjoyed the local foods and drinks. One of the highlights was the visit to a winery in Austria, the Morwald Winery in the Wachau Valley. Our guide was Trinka, who was fantastic! The owner interacted with us. Not only was the wine excellent, but so was the entertainment! We feel that not enough time was allowed for the daytime excursion in Vienna. We particulary enjoyed the night arrival in Budapest. The view was absolutely fantastic! I was somewhat disappointed with the Budapest thermal bath. Our stay at the Hilton Budapest in the Castle District was a great place for us to end our cruise. Enjoyed meeting other travelers. One suggestion - perhaps offer name tags as an option, as I had difficulty in remembering everyone's name. Read Less

Now the food...wonderful and we ate in the aquavit for all meals enjoyed the wine pairings and knowledge of the staff. Would suggest getting the beverage package, well worth it,every kind of liquor you could want, premium brands. Even leaving the ship on last day was very organized and they arranged a taxi for us as we were staying 3 extra days in Budapest. I was concerned about food since I am gluten and dairy sensitive but Emil, our maitre d, met with me each morning to go over the lunch and dinner menus to let me know what was safe for me or what they could alter for me. I was very impressed! Plus the food was excellent and we got a tour of the kitchen before we disembarked and couldn’t believe how small it was. Amazing they could produce what they did in that space. Everyone on board was intent on all passengers having a good experience. The tours were all excellent many of which were included. The ship and cabin were all spotless and our cabin steward was excellent. He even fashioned a slimmer pillow for me when I asked if they had any alternatives and they didn’t. We extended to Prague on the front end and loved it and had good tours there and then a pleasurable drive to Passau to board the ship. Read Less

This is our 2nd Viking river cruise so we had very high expectations. Viking can not help that the river was low but there should have been advanced warnings. The staff did their best to accommodate for this inconvenience. Also the offer of 25% off for the next cruise is not enough to compensate for having to change hotels within Budapest, the poor evening meal at that hotel and essentially the same lunch the next day. There was also the over 4 hour bus ride in order to board our boat then a bus ride the next day to visit one of the towns on the itinerary. Finally we were able to cruise down the Danube to our other stops. However, in our final destination we were 30 minutes by bus to get to town. They did provide a shuttle for those of us who wanted to stay in Passau. Another disturbing issue is that we saw other Viking shops and other cruise lines sailing from Budapest and also docking closer to the city centers I felt sorry for the elderly passengers who had limited mobility and had trouble boarding the bus. Bottom line is that if Viking wants us to take another cruise it’s going to cost them a bit more than 25%. Read Less

We cruise a lot but this was our first with Viking. First the pros: outstanding pre-cruise in Prague. Excellent hotel(Marriott), attentive Viking staff at hotel, excellent walking tour. Excursions on ship were excellent! Our cabin attendant was beyond outstanding. Loved all ports. Cons: We booked 4 months out so had to take one of the two cabins left. Our cabin, 105, was miserable. We never had a good night's sleep because we heard every flush made on the ship day and night. On top of that the pipes groaned loudly after each flush. We used a sound machine, pillows, etc but couldn't cover up the sound. My husband complained to the captain and the concierge. Both told him they couldn't do anything about the pipes. On top of that, my husband developed food poisoning after the first night, he was quite ill and missed several excursions. We talked with at least three other people who also fell ill while on the boat. In all of our years cruising, neither of us has ever gotten ill. I have never written a review before but people need to be aware that this cabin has problems. The fact that the staff did nothing to makes us more comfortable was a huge disappointment. Read Less

The guides were all very knowledgeable and helpful and it was a wonderful opportunity to learn about daily life in countries that were new to us. We did a lot of walking, but that was okay since we needed to walk off our fabulous meals. The cobblestones were a challenge, especially if anyone walked with a walker or cane. We were very glad that we chose to add days to our river cruise for the beginning and end of the trip. We got to do some exploring on our own for the extra days, and would certainly recommend that to everyone. Our hotels for this part of the journey were very nice and conveniently located. Read Less

Greeted at the airport as designed, to bad about the bomb scare, that was only a minor indication of what was to come!! Made our way to the Prague Marriott downtown, a very nice hotel, and greeted by the viking staff on arrival - room was ready because we paid for the day previous. Keep in mind if you are flying in from NA, you'll likely be on a red eye - we were - and you won't get into your room until the afternoon. Viking and hotel staff were great. Included breakfasts with the hotel were excellent. Great time in Praque and highly recommend this stay, although we were very lucky with the weather, sunny and 18c. Supposed to be on Viking Prestige but because of accident with the Freya - earlier in the year, two dead, very unfortunately. Put on the Legend, older and cramped!! Food on the Legend was good - not excellent - but the wait staff were excellent, worked hard for their money. Don't bother paying extra for rooms, we were on middle deck, with view because you'll be tied up to other boats or docks that offer no view. Room was cramped, but clean, initially. Bed was firm, but ok. Then the sewage back up in the morning. Before 0700 an engineer comes in looking for water leak because somebody put something to large down the toilet(same as aircraft). Asked the cruise director, Steven Guy, if alternatives were available because of the water/sewage intrusion. Nope - were fully booked - and I haven't heard a thing about it. Strange because the same thing to travel companions 3 doors down, and flooding on lower deck-- Are you kidding me? Anyways, two hours later, he stops by the breakfast table, it was a matter of discussion with all, and indicates problem fixed. Nope. For the next day and half we bothered staff to clean up carpet and get rid of the smell. Did they? Well the brought us a plug in air freshener. Glad it was no problem Viking!! Viking offered $1000 off the next cruise. Sure, I want to spend $5000 to save $1000 - whats wrong with these jerks!! How is that compensation for 3 days in a stinky room. They did pay $104 for damage to clothing and dry cleaning. Resolved the problem by moving to the Prestige around noon hour on day 3. Newer ship with more amenities. The wait staff on the Prestige were as friendly as the Legend and they were tipped directly. Management were the same surly lot. On shore tours were all informative, and with the exception of one who was sort of ok, the tour guides were excellent. Food never got to be better than good, and the dinner celebrating Austria was a huge disappointment. All appetizers. The last dinner was supposed to be grilled halibut - yum! To bad it was steamed with some disgusting green sauce on it. God it was terrible! Most nights they were cheap with the included beer and wine included with lunch and dinner. 3 nights our glasses were filled. Entertainment, well the best one was the slide show on Austria, actually very interesting. The cruise director had a good voice, if you like doing karaoke! Read Less

This was our first River Cruise which e took to celebrate our 55th Wedding Anniversary. It was FANTASTIC!! We started on land in Munich, then to Salzburg; wonderful sites and wonderful guides!! Our actual Danube River Cruise was just FANTASTIC!! Only one negative which I will address later. I have recently experienced physical limitations and we were unsure if this would be a doable trip for us. Not only was it very doable, but also most enjoyable. The staff were all extremely kind, joy filled, most helpful and felt like family. For example: the chef even had us tour the kitchen with his staff there explaining the preparation of meals!! So very interesting!! The food delicious, lovely presentations and most plentiful. The ship, just the right size and in good condition. Our cabin very ample space wise, clean, and great upkeep. The nightly entertainment most enjoyable!! The shore excursions were very lovely, informative and educational with guides being very informed and able to deliver their information in understandable English. The only negative, and it was a huge negative, was that, due to another ship having crashed into locks, we need to change ships from ours to another. This took precious time from us, needing to pack and unpack, as well as being a huge inconvenience. We had chosen a River Cruise precisely because we would not have to pack and unpack. Most notable was the fact that Viking Cruise Line did not offer us any even small compensation for this unexpected inconvenience, We, however, immensely enjoyed all else about the cruise. Read Less

Saw the ads on TV and thought it would be a nice thing to try. It took us 3.5 hours to straighten out our flights that had been booked by the company. When we arrived, we were treated very well. There was a young lady that met us at the airport and directed us to a bus. When we arrived at the port, we were on a very old boat and was told that we would have to transfer to another one. The boat smelled of water damage, it was noisy and the air in the room was stale. The bed was basically two twins beds that were put side by side so we had a ridge we slept on. I believe that in Vienna, we had to transfer to another boat to finish the trip The food was okay really nothing to write home about. The service was good. I tell people to do your homework and look at the other cruise lines that may go where you want to go, the money spent , the return on investment came up short. The best part of the trip was the tours, the tour guides were great and you received information that was real and not a canned speech. Read Less

This was our third Viking cruise. We were not disappointed. Seeing 5 countries in such a short time was outstanding. The choices Viking made were excellent. The staff are top notch. The food was representative of the areas we visited, had lots of choices, good taste and quality. Many excursions, included and optional. There was an informative tour of Passau before the cruise began; including a pipe organ performance in the Cathedral. This was a must to be heard event as it is one of the largest pipe organs in the world. Great local guide, as were most (except for the one angry guy in Vienna). Viking knows how to manage time, people, places, and spaces. An interesting feature they built into their shore excursion were 3 levels of difficulty: easy, moderate, and vigorous--for those who wanted more exercise. A grand idea, as we were traveling with friends who like to challenge themselves physically. Read Less
