We chose this cruise for the tour down the Danube. Our first river cruiswe and we were thrilled. We met wonderful people and the staff was amazing. Very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The cruise itself was so fun and picturesque. We really enjoyed the tours and learned so much about the history and culture of the cities and tours. We started 2 days ahead in Prague and then went to Passau, Germany to start our cruise. So many places to see! The ship was clean and the cabin, although small was very organized and you had room to unpack and put your suitcase under the bed. The ports were fun and the excursions we chose were enjoyed! Panoramic tours of the cities: a wine tasting in Austria, bread making at a farm in Linz, A market tour with our chef in Vienna, A Mozart/Strauss concert in Vienna. We would have loved to stay in Brataslava to enjoy the Slovakian food but sadly we were there just a half day. Such beautiful cities and towns. We loved them all - Budapest is very interesting and beautiful. We arrived at night and saw the beautiful parliament building all lit up looking gold with a full moon shining also. Very impressive. I think people with mobility issues would find this trip a challenge. Lots of walking and cobblestone streets in these centuries old cities. The food was delicious with many choices and fare from the areas we toured, The piano player at night was great. Someone complained in a previous comment - we enjoyed him. Read Less

After having experienced the middle deck room in Uniworld’s Venice Cruise, the next year my husband and I were ready to sail the Danube from Passau to Budapest, but on the lower level. For the most part, I was happy with the room, food and staff. The excursions could have been better described. Most guides but the one in Passau were quite knowledgeable about their subjects. The organization of passengers onto busses and back again was streamlined and easy. I’d highly recommend all the tours except Schönbrunn Palace. It was too warm with too many people and not particularly interesting. I was quite tired after that and skipped the Mozart concert, which everyone said was fantastic. The bathroom had a heated marble floor and towel rack, which was great. The beds and pillows are sooo comfortable, although the AC wouldn’t cool quite enough for me at night. An article of clothing “disappeared” from my room’s closet. I wish I had thought to lock my clothes in my suitcase and then slide the suitcase in the space provided under the bed. Read Less

Have been ocean cruising for a few years now and thought we would give river cruising a try. We saw Jane Mcdonald on a Danube river cruise, liked the itinery, so started looking around. Viking seemed to get a lot of excellent reviews, nothing negative that we could find, so we booked with them. First off, they posted a nice personalised brochure to us. I logged onto their website and reserved our trips-don't worry if you forget this, you are automatically reserved on each of the included excursions and can change these at anytime, even on board. The meet up with the Viking rep at the airport and coach trip to the ship is very smooth.Once on the coach you won't touch your luggage again until its delivered to your cabin. On arrival we were shown around the ship and our cabin, and (depending on the time you arrive) were directed to a wine and cheese tasting event to get things going. The cabin was bigger than I expected, at least the same as on ocean cruises. Spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. Bottled water every day. Food was very good. Great choices with local variations at each port. Wine and beer included with every lunch and dinner. Waiters are mainly Philippino, very cheerful and clearly enjoy working for Viking. Nothing is too much trouble. Entertainment is obviously different to on an ocean cruise but the singers, musicians, and Tim our entertainment Director, are of very good quality and perfect for a ship of this size. Be prepared to join in, it makes for a great evening. Tim must eat Duracell batteries for breakfast, he's a human dynamo. The excursions are excellent, they run so smoothly and are fabulous. Water bottles are handed out as you leave the ship, so no getting dehydrated. No photographer on board (hooray! ), no sales pitches,no gym, a small onboard shop for those who collect memorabilia. Basically, what you pay for the cruise is virtually all you need to budget for, no nasty surprises. And no children on board! We are definitely using Viking again, we only need to decide where to go! Top notch experience all the way around. We were met at the airport as scheduled and the tour began without a hitch. Our cruise was unaffected by low water and we were able to complete our itinerary as scheduled. The Christmas Markets were great fun, we participated in every excursion, and met some ah-mazing people over dinner and drinks each night. Don’t miss Cesky Krumlov if given the opportunity. We toured on a Sunday so there was less traffic and we were able to enjoy “Little Prague” longer. My 20-something daughter fell in love with Budapest and can’t wait to go back for a longer stay. We chose to sit with the same waiter each evening and Vlad worked hard to remember our particular likes and dislikes. He was one of the highlights of being onboard. Our cabin was roomy enough for two and the heated bathroom floors were such a luxury. The common areas were perfect for watching the countryside as we cruised by—we enjoyed unlimited hot tea and sweets while relaxing in the lounge. During some of our downtime, we enjoyed catching up on Downton Abbey in anticipation of the movie set to be released. While we did not require a lot of staff attention, they were friendly, accommodating, informative and quite fun. Would definitely choose Viking again for river cruising and look forward to sailing with them again. Read Less

We wanted to kick the Christmas season off right since our travel agent indicated to us that Prague would be highly decorated for Christmas, we would see a lot of Christmas markets and Europe does Christmas does much better than the USA. However, Prague was not decorated much for Christmas and most of the Christmas markets had not opened yet. That was a disappointment. Some of the side excursions seemed to be a little rushed and we were only given 15 minutes to tour the large Christmas market in Vienna before the buses went back to the boat. I do not think that we go to do the full food tasting that day as well. Service on the boat was excellent. Some side excursions were excellent but out of the three river cruises with Avalon we have done, this one could have been better. Prague was a little bit of a disappointment as far as being decorated for Christmas but we enjoyed touring the city. The personnel on the boat treated us very well. Overall, we enjoyed the trip but felt a little shorted on some things as far as side excursions. The trip to the church where they sang Silent Night was way too short and you could not get into the museum that day nor the chapel. So, I am not sure why we were even taken. Food was great and my wife's wheat allergy was taken care of. Read Less

Went with three other couples based on one experience with Viking and several recommendations specifically for the "Danube Waltz" cruise from Passau to Budapest. Our experience was just as others have provided. Absolutely outstanding. Your every need was anticipated by the crew and attended to. Onboard activities were keyed to the cities the ship would visit. Food and service was excellent throughout. Relaxing and wonderful. Have read about other cruise lines, more expensive and "exclusive" but they'd have a heck of a time beating Viking. We arrived early for our trip, about 11:00AM but they were prepared for us since the ship knew each passenger's travel arrangements. Onboarding was painless and very professional, as was the disembarkation process at the end. Excursions were excellent with local guides providing unique insights into the areas we visited. Optional excursions were similarly conducted. Viking clearly targets the 50+ age group and knows what that age group is looking for as far as accommodations, amenities, and service are concerned. We were all treated like VIPs from the time we got into Viking's hands at the arrival airport until we left. There's nothing like a Viking river cruise. Expensive, but worth every nickle. This is the vacation you worked to be able to afford! Read Less

Our friends had gone on same Danube cruise the previous spring and we couldn’t join at that time. Wanted to catch up so we could be together next cruise. Plus I was tired of being green! As in envious... Most stress was leaving for airport to receive text that our flight had been cancelled. And then calling Viking to learn they were unaware. Rebooked at airport thru different country to land at different time and still able to find the well marked Viking representative and board luxury bus for two hour trip to boat. Local guides were fantastic for the most part. Food and staff excellent. Commitment to history and education outstanding. Longboat was well designed and very comfortable inside and out. Wish we could have had longer time in each city, but no complaints about Viking in that respect. It’s just that each city is deeply layered and rich with history, always leaving you wanting more. Have already booked a Viking cruise for next April. Talked so much about it, we have gathered 16 couples to join our group of friends! Read Less

I've seen the advertisements on TV for many years. I've been cruising pretty regularly since 2010 and just became more and more intrigued. So I did some research and it confirmed Viking was one of these best companies. Everything was so simple and easy. From booking it to transportation to getting on and off the ship, all easy. The ship was amazing. Definitely much, much smaller than the larger cruise ships I'm used too, but none of the crowds. The staff was superb. Food was great and the excursions were awesome! I mean you pull over to parks to downtown areas, etc...and everything is right there! And you learn SO much from the tour guides!!!! Wow, my wife and I were blown away. We'd do it again in a heartbeat and in fact, we are, because we are looking at doing a another Viking cruise within the next two years, possibly to Italy this time. On this last cruise, we did the Danube and we went to Munich and Passau, Germany, Linz and Melk, scenic cruise thru Wachau Valley, Durnstein, Krems, and Vienna Austria, and Budapest, Hungary. The worst part of the trip? Staying on the airplanes for so long, but seating was comfortable and Lufthansa's food is EXCELLENT! The tour groups are generally small so you can ask personal questions of the guides. Where comfortable shoes because you WILL do a lot of walking. And generally, if it's hot, when you come back, you'll want to change clothes so think about your clothing or getting them laundered on the ship. My wife and I are African American and we were the only ones on the cruise ship. We had zero issues with any staff, other travlers, or at any places we visited. I only share thata because I've had other friends ask me. Everyone is helpful and friendly. The rooms are clean and always refreshed with bottles od water for your convenience. This is our second adventure with Viking. We did the Rhine from Amsterdam to Switzerland taking advantage of the extra days in both countries extending our vacation. Experiencing the Alps is something we never will forget. The many vacation options, River or Ocean cruises, are so tempting you become addicted to traveling with Viking. They keep you informed by social media and mail of all that is waiting out there for you. Viking is the only way we will travel. The service in the dining room was wonderful! The servers got to know us and they got to know our preferences so that we did not even have to ask for things we enjoyed! My mother was taken care of at every meal so that all of her dietary needs were me. Entertainment was great fun and the ports and shore excursions were wonderful. I believe that many Americans have become accustomed to great wireless service, and that was not what we were used to. However, it was great to be a bit disconnected from what can be overwhelming news and amounts of information. Our cabin steward was fabulous and heated up Mom's pack for her sore shoulder. This was a nice trip. BUT we paid to upgrade our room to a balcony suite and expected good views. But each night they docked next to another ship and our view was the room on the other ship. We could not open our curtain. Biking did not mention this when they took out money. We actually enjoyed this trip and saw many wonderful sites. The people on board were nice. The crew was wonderful and took care of all of our needs. The food was great. The included tours were great. It was nice to be pampered all week long. Housekeeping did an awesome job. They clean our room at least twice a day. So all in all the trip was great. I just can’t get over the fact that we wasted a lot of money on an upgrade that was worthless. Biking should be ashamed of themselves. I don’t know if I can recommend them to someone else with out mentioning the room situation. Read Less

We initially chose to cruise at Thanksgiving because Viking was offering great deals. But we quickly fell in love with the Christmas markets in each town and village. We picked up Christmas gifts of glass, and wood and ceramics. We drank way too much gluwein and loved it. There was a particularly good art museum in Lintz just off of the place where we docked. We were also completely wowed by the Viking service and the beautifully appointed suite. We quickly made friends and had lovely evenings with good food and entertainment. The program directors made sure everyone knew where they were going and took great care of everyone. The wait staff were incredibly friendly, too. We particularly enjoyed Bratislava, which was small, but had some great local shops where we found some really good whisky. We were especially surprised by the evening arrival into Budapest which was an amazing show of the lights of the city. We tacked on three extra days in Budapest which gave us time to really see a lot of the city. We were so touched by the bronze cast shoes by the river representing the 60,000 Jews from Budapest that were killed during WWII. I would definitely do this cruise again! Can't stop thinking about the Christmas markets. Read Less

The welcome we received when boarding, our accommodations, service from the staff were all outstanding. We could not have asked for more. We chose this cruise based on the diversity of countries we would experience. We began with a 3-day pre-cruise stay in Prague. Prague is a welcoming city offering beautiful architecture, landscape and historical sites. All arrangements were handled by Viking and went seamlessly. We especially enjoyed the coach ride through the country side from Prague to Passau Germany, where we boarded the Viking Vilhjalm. Our excursions were easily booked through Viking and were excellent. The Terazin tour was a somber, but touching experience. Highlights of the trip for us were Chesky Kromlov, Vienna, and sailing into Budapest seeing the city in lights. The crew aboard the Vilhjalm are friendly and attentive. The tour director shared personal stories of life while under Communist regime. This cruise was very enlightening in terms of gaining information and insight into the lives and struggles of persons who endured the effects of WWII. Viking longships are the perfect size. They offer care and comfort. The cuisine is local to the country you are in and is excellent. Viking staff know and display excellent customer service. This means of travel takes away the worry of travel to a foreign country. You are free to relax and enjoy the beautiful people and surroundings while experiencing the best possible cultural journey. We wanted to do something Special for our 45th Anniversary! We have had our eye on a River Cruise, so Viking commercials got our wonder going. We chose the Danube Cruise mostly because we wanted to see the sights of Europe. We chose wisely, the ship Egil was just the right size. Embarkation was smooth from the airport to our port in Passau. There was always someone there to make us feel we were in the right place. Boarding the ship was easy, inviting, clean and exciting. Our cabin was beautiful & all the comforts of home with a beautiful view off our room. Dining was easy, we sat where we liked and met new friends that we ended up chumming around with! Our waiter was pleasant, funny and took care of our wants & needs. The food was delicious, got to try new things! Always such a variety, and to have a glass or two of wine with lunch & dinner was a plus! Entertainment was just alright, nothing elaborate. Cabin Service was okay, we were missed the first day and had to ask if there was daily service....(our gal was stationed on the bottom floor and we were on the top floor, so we didn't see much of her) We REALLY enjoyed having an Included Port Excursion in EVERY Port. Beautiful countryside to walk around in and we took great advantage of our time off the ship. All in All it was a Wonderful Cruise!! Read Less

My wife and I were interested in visiting some of the countries in which our families lived, and we wanted to travel in December to see the Christmas markets. We were extremely pleased with our choice. And we had the same wonderful experience on this Viking cruise as we had on our previous one. along the Rhone. The staff was superb, the tour guides were excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cities and sites we visited. We also went to two concentration camps, which were very sobering, but well worth the visits. The educational opportunities on this trip, through the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, seemed endless. Our journey began early, as we spent 3 days in Prague. It was a great start to our travels. Once we started the cruise, our favorites were Passau, Vienna, and Budapest, for the scenery, the markets, the food, and the tours. We were not very impressed with Linz. The food on board was great, although we think there could have been a little more emphasis on local cuisine like bratwurst. We heartily recommend the wine tasting tours, which we've done on both our Viking river cruises. The on-board entertainment was enjoyable, especially the Sounds of Austria. We are looking forward to future Viking cruises. Finally, we've been on a number of Royal Caribbean cruises, which we also thoroughly enjoyed. However, those were substantially different from Viking. They are far more active (kayaking, climbing up waterfalls, swimming with dolphins), and cater to a more diverse clientele (teens through seniors), while Viking had an older -- middle-aged, mostly -- crowd, with which we shared more life experiences. Viking offers more educational opportunities. Additionally, RC has a lot more passengers; the smaller number on Viking (around 175) gives staff the opportunity for much more interaction and personal attention. Read Less

My Wife and I just returned from Budapest, Hungary where we finished our 10 day river cruise on the River Beatrice. This was a Uniworld trip which included virtually everything, from all meals, excursions, entertainment and beer and wines. The wines were from each area we visited and the servers kept the glasses full until we said enough. The ship was nicely furnished and well maintained as expected on a luxury cruise. The food was excellent with many, many selections for each meal. Even the foods I normally do not like (being picky) was prepared in a manner that was delicious. The table layouts were either 4 or 6 chairs to a table so you could pick a desired layout. At each port they provided a selection of activities (or tours) for each city with experienced local guides who provided personal descriptions of each area which provided very interesting topics. Samples of local foods, wines, candies, coffees etc. were provided so we could taste and sample the local tastes. A sign-up was required for each excursion so they could provide guides with small groups. We selected the tour "Do as the locals do" at each port and were never disappointed. They provided both active and easy tours for each body type and even had bicycle tours for the very active. Each evening excellent entertainment in the lounge was provided and a enjoyable description of each days activities was provided. I know this review is getting long but I could go on and on because it was so enjoyable. We all felt so pampered we did not want the cruise to end. My recommendation is "the best trip ever" so do not pass this up, Read Less

The showers were hot.The food was wonderful and delicious . The entertainment was wonderful. The ship is spotless . Any issues or questions were addressed . The tours are great for you had several levels of walking. The tour guides were all great and the most wonderful was the GIrl who did the Cesky kremlov was the greatest for she even gave her phone number, if we got lost or needed her. The ship never rocked and the crew kept us updated on all we needed to know. We got into Budapest late because of lock times and the next night the Captain took us back out after supper so we could sail back into Budapest in enjoy the spectacular lights of Budapest and it was fantastic for it was a holy day and all the church bells were ringing. It was spectacular as the fire works on the 4th of July! The crew on the boat were helpful and would do anything for you to make you comfortable and enjoy the trip. They could not have been nicer. My daughter is lactose intolerant and her food was great and she never ever got sick. Umbrellas were available if you needed them. We always had bottle water for tours. Bus Drivers were great. We met great and friendly people . People were polite on the trip. The cities were wonderful to see. Just sailing on the River was great . There was nothing to complain about. The man in charge of our side trips and other things told us we did not have change our euros for they would be accepted in the tourist area and he gave us the current conversion rates. I would love to go again. The next time I go it will be the Paris river cruise. My sleep was never ever disturbed. I loved it on the Danube for we had a suite. I loved the veranda and the view from the room. I loved up top of the boat and the special non slip flooring. I had no complaints and am saving my money for the Paris trip. I must say I am 70 and going on the boat to all these places was great for I did not have to go from hotel to hotel unpacking and packing . Eating my meals on the boat saved my daughter and me for getting sick . The meals on the boat corresponded to were we were and so did the entertainment. You can drink the water on the boat also. You did not miss anything by not eating in the towns for you had the cuisine and the local entertainment. Yes can't wait to go again. Oh yes they have people at the airport the help you get to the bus that goes to the boat when you arrive and when you leave they have people at the airport helping you get checked in. It is quite the organized procedure getting everyone to the airport in time for their flights -- staring breakfast in the wee hours . You never went hungry. Read Less

We decided on the Viking Danube Waltz River Cruise for our 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration because of it's all inclusiveness/little planning on our part appeal. We have never been outside of the United States except for a tropical Disney Cruise. We were dreading the long flights since we don't even like 3 hours flights within the states, but we survived. We toured from Passau to Budapest with most stops in Austria. We signed up for all of the included tours and thoroughly enjoyed them all . . . knowledgeable and easy to understand guides and having the headsets was great. I could hang back to take pictures and still hear what was going on ahead of me and catch up. The food on the ship was excellent and our servers very attentive. There was a buffet at breakfast and lunch as well as the choice to order off of a menu. I enjoyed an omelet prepared to my liking every morning and a delicious blueberry muffin - both on the buffet. Ordering from the menu at lunch and dinner is a gourmet meal experience. Several courses, small portions and inviting presentations. Most everything was delicious. Unless you want specialty beers, wine or mixed drinks, no need to upgrade your beverage package . . . you get endless wine and beer. We don't drink so it would be nice to be able to pay a little less to not have that benefit. The couple we sat with for most dinners each drank at least 3 glasses of wine with their meal . . . they were getting more bang for the buck ;) We had a French Balcony room which was perfect. It was too chilly to be sitting out on a Veranda in October. Between the drawers and closet, we had plenty of room to store all of our things with room under the bed to store our empty suitcases. It was as if an elf was cleaning it as we seldom actually saw our maid. The Viking Legend and others like it have been retired so this may no longer be an issue, but the shower curtain was difficult to keep from allowing water to escape . . . that's really my only complaint about the room. I think the showers have glass doors in the Longships they are sailing now. It seemed most people on our cruise were from the states and around our age or older. We were 59 and 61 at the time. I think I saw one girl about 11 traveling with her mother . . . they were the young folk on the ship, but seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. As I'm writing this review of our cruise last year, we've just booked another . . . the Rhine Getaway in July. So, that should tell you that we had a great time and are ready for another European adventure less than a year later. I highly recommend taking a Viking Cruise. And get in on a 2 for 1 package . . .I notice people paying much more than we paid . . . so unnecessary. Read Less

I had heard good things about Viking river cruises, but I still did my research. Viking had a wonderful itinerary, a beautiful boat, and the customer service people were top notch, especially Ceasar Reyes. We chose the Danube Waltz and added a pre-extension to Prague, then stayed at the end on our own for another night in Budapest. We were able to visit five countries, which gave us a great overview of that part of eastern Europe. I can't say enough about this cruise. It exceeded my expectations in every way. We stayed in the smallest room on the bottom floor, because that was all that was available. It turned out to be just perfect, as we spent most of our time in the lounge or outside on the deck. The food was amazing! So fresh and delicious. The special dinners were really fun with such great attention to detail. The best part was the professional, fun and competent staff. They made the experience the best possible. I will definitely do another Viking cruise! Read Less

Saw the ads on TV and thought it would be a nice thing to try. It took us 3.5 hours to straighten out our flights that had been booked by the company. When we arrived, we were treated very well. There was a young lady that met us at the airport and directed us to a bus. When we arrived at the port, we were on a very old boat and was told that we would have to transfer to another one. The boat smelled of water damage, it was noisy and the air in the room was stale. The bed was basically two twins beds that were put side by side so we had a ridge we slept on. I believe that in Vienna, we had to transfer to another boat to finish the trip The food was okay really nothing to write home about. The service was good. I tell people to do your homework and look at the other cruise lines that may go where you want to go, the money spent , the return on investment came up short. The best part of the trip was the tours, the tour guides were great and you received information that was real and not a canned speech. Read Less

The ads on PBS made the cruise look very appealing, and we were not disappointed. The crew and guides took such great care of us. We were never lost, uncomfortable, hungry or confused about anything during our travel. Our accommodations were top of the line, and we both felt that very kind people were taking care of all our needs. The food was diving with lots of choices. The meals were so pleasant with many seating options, yet it wasn't a crazy number of people. The entertainment was an unexpected pleasure. The staff members were so friendly and helpful. We celebrated our 44th anniversary during the cruise. Both of us were so touched by everyone's participation and good wishes. We will always remember many of the special moments along the Danube. The scenery and tours were just amazing and so well guided. All our tour guides had marvelous personalities and stories to share, as well as much history. Congratulations, Viking! You got it all right! Thank you Read Less

I have wanted to do a riverboat cruise for a while now and Budapest was always a place I wanted to revisit. The weather was perfect. The dining experiences on board was the biggest surprise for me, as I do not usually care for cruise food. To me it is usually very much like institution food. This cruise was different, everything seemed fresh and flavorful. The presentations were elegant. The atmosphere was conducive to meeting others easily. The physical set up of the boat allowed for relaxation and viewing the entire trip. It was nice to be able to view the shore (which was extremely close) and the villages from the water, even though we did not stop in all the villages. The staff was well spoken and attentive, always going out of their to get you what you want or help you in any way. I will return to this cruise line!! Money well spent. I also appreciated the free flight. Read Less
