This was our first river cruise, first time with Viking, and first trip to Europe. Throughout the entire journey, the Viking staff was very attentive, well-trained and polite. They truly want their passengers to have a good experience. The room: We were in Veranda Cabin 339 toward the end of the ship, but still convenient to everything. The room was clean, and up-to-date, with everything working properly. (same with the rest of the ship). We chose to have the balcony room, but I think we would have been fine with the lower level small upper window. However, it was nice to have a view of the shore, and keep an eye on the weather. Good sound-proofing; rarely heard any outside noise. The bathroom is small, thick and thirsty towels, and good bath products. Water pressure was fine, even to wash and rinse my long hair. Hairdryer is provided. The food: Food was very good, featuring the regional favorites, which I enjoyed since almost all our meals for the 8 days would be onboard, and I wanted some French cuisine. Each night there are varying chef specialties on the right hand side of the menu. The Chateaubriand was incredible. My favorite was the Goat Cheese Souffle. I ordered two! Order them while you can, because they are not repeated. The left side of the menu has more basic items, that are repeated each night. A similar light buffet is also an option. Alcoholic Beverages: We opted not to get the Silver Spirits Beverage package, but those who did, said it's a better value than other cruise lines. We occasionally ordered a drink, since I like sparkling wines, and they were not offered in the free wine that comes with lunch and dinner. In addition, there are times the crew provides free bubbly for toasting, or a small cocktail sample as we returned from a shore excursion. There were also free mimosas on the breakfast buffet. Crowding: There is none. You don't have to rush anywhere to save a seat. Getting on and off the ship is a breeze. Not like the cattle call of an ocean liner. Just show up where you need to be and there will be room for you. We booked our excursions in advance, but I believe that on most of them, you could still sign up the day of. Onboard Entertainment. There is a low-key piano man in the lounge. Plus a few other nightly programs such as learning French phrases, learning about cheeses, and one we didn't do: a watercolor painting class. Also dancing one night. The entertainment is one area that could use some improvement, however, it was not a high priority for us. As for in-room TV, I watched a few travel videos, but didn't spend any time watching TV or movies. Hey, it took me 58 years to get to France, and I'm not going to watch movies. In our limited free time, I planned our next day and wrote down our adventures in my travel journal. Wi-fi was not great, but this was my time to disconnect. Shore Excursions: We did the following included tours: Napoleon's Chateau de Malmaison (very interesting), Vernon Walking Tour (visited a Cathedral, with a little free time to shop), Monet Foundation Giverney (my absolute HIGHLIGHT of this trip--the Gardens were SPECTACULAR! with enough time to enjoy them), Normandy Beaches US. (good overview, but not much time spent at each stop). Panoramic Paris day trip (saw some highlights of the City, but yikes, only 15 minutes at the Eiffel Tower !?!). We paid extra for some upgraded tours: Rouen Farm and Countryside (toured the apple farm, watched a border collie herd sheep, sampled hard cider and Calvados apple brandy with a few light bites including a small apple tart.) La Roche Guyon (nice ride in the countryside to tour a Chateau, probably the least memorable of our excursions) and Paris by Night (hmm...City of Light? Saw many of the same buildings as the day trip, and only 10 minutes at the Eiffel Tower) Tour Guides & Devices: All of our tour guides did a good job, definitely looking out to not lose anybody in narrow streets and passageways. Helping those with mobility issues. You're provided an audio device to wear for each guided tour that you keep charged up in your room. Considering retirees are not always the sharpest in learning electronics, these were pretty easy to use, with minimal problems getting people hooked up, and we could hear well throughout each excursion. Weather: there is a reason Europe is so green and beautiful. It rains a lot. So be prepared with layers. Viking crew members hand you an umbrella as you depart for each excursion, if you want one. We knew the forecast for our trip was not great, but decided to have a great time anyway, and never really got poured on. Only had about a day and half of sunshine. Shipmates: At age 62 & 58, my husband and I were one of the youngest couples onboard. Almost all retirees, but fun, active, well-behaved pleasant people we enjoyed getting to know. Almost all of them had taken multiple Viking cruises! It's open seating, so use the opportunity to get to know some wonderful people and find out about their travels. Their are no children on Viking ships. I also noticed that not one person had any complaints about anything not working properly in their rooms or on the ship. Everyone seemed to be very happy. Crew: None stood out at huge personalities, but all were attentive and if anyone had a need, they were on it. Magali, our activities director, was working hard around the clock to make sure everyone was happy with their experience. Oftentimes, the Captain himself and other crew members greeted us as we returned each day. The Executive Chef was always present too, with food demos, explaining the specials, and even helping load luggage as we departed. Everyone seemed to be very happy. If there were any behind-the-scenes problems, we were never aware of them. What you don't have on the Rinda: No spa, no pool, no fitness center, no casino, no sales pitches. Negatives: The itinerary for Paris and Normandy lists Paris three times. The reality is that you will be nowhere near the heart of the city on the first two days. Timing was bad to have the only full day and night there on the last day of the cruise. If you really want to explore the main attractions in the heart of the city, you would need to add additional days. Tips to Viking: A photographer would be a nice addition to capture trip highlights. Although I don't need a full-service spa, a couple massage therapists with a massage chair would be awesome to work out those aches and pains. Read Less

We had received brochures from Viking for several years, but until we both retired we didn’t take them “seriously”. Once we made the decision to book a cruise we researched the options, spoke with friends who had taken Viking trips and chose the Rinda Cruise along the Seine. The trip was beyond our expectations...the food, the accommodations, the attention to detail. We felt so comfortable on the excursions, liked the “audio-box” communication on the excursions, the staff were terrific, the food great. The itinerary sheets delivered to our room for the next day were very helpful and the evening meetings pertaining to the next days’ excursions were very appreciated. We intend to take another Viking Cruise in the future, although at this time we have not booked a trip....personal health issues have a bearing.....We highly recommend the Viking Cruise excursions! We hope to take a cruise along the Rhine River and maybe a Southern France trip. Read Less

Normandy was emotional. Wish you held the Paris at night tour earlier in the week because people are preparing to leave early the next morning. Each stop had a great tour and lots of information about the area. The menu varied daily with the specials, and it was very good. I think the kitchen staff did a great job. The staff was very friendly and I was impressed that after the first day, they always said my name. Accommodations were very comfortable and it was easy to sleep at night. Hardly knew we were moving. Staff did a great job cleaning the room. Loved the balcony and the view. Overall, great experience and I’ll travel with you again! Read Less

We are experienced ocean cruisers, but this was our first river cruise. We were originally scheduled on the Danube on Avalon. Due to low water levels, Avalon offered a refund which we accepted and chose this Seine trip on Viking instead. We were very pleasantly surprised by Viking, having heard some negatives, but we were so impressed we have booked our Danube trip on Viking for next year and hope to do an ocean cruise with Viking after that. Our verandah suite was perfect for us, except storage was more limited than we expected. We will pack differently next time—we didn’t need any of our “dressier” clothes and in the suites you have included same day laundry service so packing light should be easy. (There may actually be more drawer space in the regular cabins, based on quick peaks we were able to get on occasion while walking by.) We sat in the same area of the dining room each night and relied on our excellent waiter to recommend our meals and he did a great job; he was totally honest about what we should avoid. We had no complaints about the included shore excursions or guides. We found river cruising to be stressless and fun and educational, and we appreciated the staff’s expertise in every department. Well done, Viking. Read Less

Viking gave impeccable service as usual, the ship was clean, cabin comfortable and warm, and the staff friendly and efficient.Excellent cuisine, with staff very accommodating with my food intolerances. Our shore excursions were well planned, although we would have liked a a little more free/explore time in some of the quaint towns. We did the extension tour to the Loire valley, our guide was fantastic and she was so knowledgeable as well as flexible. I think the whole group would have willingly skipped La Tours and spent more time at Leonardo de Vince’s home and maybe Viking can allow that in the future. Embarkation and Disembarkation are a non event with Viking -fast, smoothly executed and well organized. We have cruised a lot but Viking, either river or Ocean is by far superior to any of the other lines. All the guides are local, very qualified and are fluent in at least 2or 3 languages. They have at least one degree in history and give you real ,accurate information (not “legend”-I was in the tourist industry as a guide, to in Europe and a lot of information we heard given was less than accurate) Viking employers the best and makes each journey memorable. I experience severe motion sickness due to an inner ear disorder. Goin on a cruise was never something I ever considered. Friends asked us to go with them on the Viking River cruise from Paris to Normandy. As my husband is a student of history and I an artist and it was our fortieth anniversary we agreed. I had my trepidation's due to my motion sickness but was willing to try. All I have to say is that the experience exceeded our expectations. everything about the trip was wonderful, the ship, the accommodations, the experiences and the Staff and Crew. I can't say enough about the crew, they were absolutely wonderful. the food was outstanding and the effort to meet dietary restrictions was phenomenal. And the food, oh the meals were wonderful. We had such a pleasant time meeting other people and finding out just how small the world is. Did I have any difficulty with my motions sickness, yes to a minor degree. Will I go on another Viking River Cruise, yes definitly. Thank You Viking Read Less

The food was delicious and especially enjoyed the dining option off the bar area.the Aquavit buffet and terrace. The ship was spotless and the staff were always friendly and helpful. Our stateroom was tiny but we were not in there much. One night I stayed after dinner and participated in the music contest and dance that included the staff. It was fun. One of the most helpful things about the trip was Viking providing transportation to and from the airport. The Viking rep that took a group of us to CDG walked us through the process of using Air France's kiosks, attaching our baggage tag and took us to the luggage drop off and on to security - where he could go no further; that was all so helpful. We especially loved Giverny, Rouen and Normandy. Our trip to The Louvre was outstanding! All our guides were so knowledgeable. For us, it was a fabulous anniversary trip. We were tremendously grateful for our experiences onboard as well. Service, helpfulness and friendliness made each day a joy. Also our cabin was comfortable and so spacious! We also loved our heated floors. We are already planning our next trip! We had heard so much about Viking. Nothing was overstated. The food was amazing! Each day we were more delighted than the day before! The menus had so many choices. My husband I would order different items so we could sample more things. Onboard concerts of opera singers and lectures about Impressionism after we visited Giverny enhanced our trip greatly. We enjoyed every minute of our Viking cruise. We have described it to all our friends and family as the trip of a lifetime. I also kept a daily journal of our activities. I’m so glad I did! It allows me to relive our days together in France. The fog gave the scene a magical feeling. The places we stopped at were picturesque and historical. Each stop was led by a knowledgeable and friendly guide. They not only explained the historical and cultural significance of the sites, but also the present day life of the inhabitants. The highlight was the excursion to the Normandy Beaches and Museums. Standing on Omaha Beach were the infantry had to cross that open ground under heavy enemy fire was humbling. The Food on board was great. We had a variety of dishes, highlighting the local dishes. All of the wines were delicious, and not boring. The staff were professional and helpful. Each night featured and entertaining look at the plans for the next day. Next time we will take a suite. We did not travel with children. We took the pre-excursion package in Paris and our hotel was great as was the Viking concierge. Very helpful. We also appreciated the assistance at the airport. We were very much attended to, as we navigated to the gate. We particularly enjoyed meeting our fellow cruisers and learning about their lives, experiences etc. We had fun and also had very endearing conversations throughout the week. We chose this cruise because it included Paris, Normandy beaches—and then, on part two, Provence—Arles and Avignon. On a prior cruise—“Romantic Danube”—we particularly enjoyed stops at smaller towns along the river. This trip did have those stops, and we liked them a lot! Every tour guide we had was EXCELLENT. The on-board cuisine did well to give us what would be “local fare.” The only meal I really did not like was NOT due to flavor, but due to “logistics”—that is, serving a meal that was totally—i.e. all courses—buffet style was not good. Cumbersome, slow, and not as conducive to a good sampling of the local fare as I think Viking thought it was. All of the included tours we went on were VERY WELL led, with guides who were personable and knowledgeable. Our only “glitch” was not being fully informed about our train “get off” point in Lyon—our guide did tell us to get off at Lyon the last train station, but did NOT tell us that Lyon had. TWO rail stations. So we got off the train when it arrived in Lyon. This was not right! While the subsequent scramble we experienced to get from Lyon rail station #1 to the docking point for our Viking boat was an adventure, I’m not sure all Viking travelers would have recollected it in such amusement as did we! It’s great to “let go and let Viking” in terms of most ALL of the travel details. Thank you! Read Less

We chose a double Viking cruise for our 25th wedding anniversary & they met all expectations! Michael, our cruise director was outstanding & was off board for all the walking & specialty tours, making as many as any one person could possibly accomplish. His nightly next day shore excursion talks were delightful & coupled with Veronica, the sommelier's talk & backed up by the chef, it was a real entertaining laugh. I looked forward to it every night. Veronica gave us extra table talk on wines each night on the Silver Spirits package. Rooms are simple and clean with lots of storage space. Our cabin steward was meticulous to cleanly detail each day. We had a veranda which allowed for shore views when not on deck. The excursions all had excellent guides, as would be expected in this pricey range. The connection to Paris by high speed rail was excellent, as Viking staff took personal care of our luggage leaving the ship, tagging & then escorting us to the train station & even punching our ticket & boarding the train. A second Viking rep was waiting for us at the end of our journey. Dinners had a great selection & themed for the locale. Breakfasts & lunches were a bit repetitious as we were on a double cruise. We arrived in Avignon a day early and stayed near the dock. In the morning I walked to 5he ship and was pleasantly surprised that our room was ready. The Viking employee that helped us with our luggage was one of our waiters from the Grang European Viking cruise we had taken two years before. Surprisingly, he remembered us! As usual, the tours were well organized and interesting. We didn’t do any of the optional tours but since our ship was well located, we were able to entertain ourselves in the towns we visited. The ship was well maintained. No nicks or scuffs or other signs of wear. The food was outstanding. I also thought the evening entertainment was good, but the tv coverage wasn’t up to the standard of our previous trips with Viking. Having enjoyed the Budapest to Amsterdam cruise we chose Viking again to see Paris. We did the pre cruise stay. We used city taxied to get around and found them to be friendly and mini tour guides. We had tickets for the Eiffel Tower and went to the top and had a glass of champagne to celebrate. It was beautiful! We had a dinner cruise at night that was exceptional. The lights on the Eiffel Tower at night were spectacular. Paris at night was special. Monet’s Gardens were paintings come to life. It was great throughout the cruise that Viking takes you on tours early- usually least crowded times. The informative talks about the following days destinations were well done and I learned a lot of things I didn’t know. I really enjoy the Joan of Arch history. Our tour of the beaches of Normandy was inspiring and there was not a dry eye after the ceremony at the American cemetery. We had 2 WWII veterans on our cruise so it added something special. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the Viking crew was. My sister and I are handicapped. Our guides were thoughtful and made very attempt to make our visits to museums and sites especially in the Louvre and Versailles where crowds were difficult to be exceptional. They helped us maneuver through the crowds with our scooters. We never felt unsafe as the French had a very visible police and military presence at all tourist destinations. The meals on the ship were very good but we missed the variety of cookies we sampled on our previous cruise. This was France and no Macaroons. I loved France and Viking helped me have a great experience. Read Less

We arrived a few days early to explore Paris on our own. After boarding the ship, we enjoyed our time on ship and explored Le Pecq (port city). Viking's longboats are very comfortable, the staff is always working to make life onboard fun, the food is excellent and the excursions are informative/educational. We traveled with a group of 18 who took our own excursions, but joined together in the evenings for cocktails and dinner. My husband and I recently made our second Viking cruise. Both trips were wonderful. The excursions and ship entertainment were both enjoyable, but the most outstanding thing about both trips was the service. So many situations come to mind when I say service but one was most memorable. At about 9:00 PM on a Wednesday evening I realized that I had not packed enough insulin for my husband. Immediately, I went to the front desk to ask about medical possibilities for getting a new prescription on France. The attendant called a doctor who came to us. He examined my husband, wrote us a script, and said that we needed to have it immediately. Now the most amazing part: a young ship employee actually ran from where we were docked to a pharmacy to get our medicine! he had it back to us in almost half an hour. Now that is service! Read Less

This was a "Congratulations on Your Retirement" cruise to myself and I took one of my daughters. Very different to the two Ocean Cruises that I had take before, which I expected, and I welcomed the change of experience Most of the cruise was wonderful - see other sections of this review for specifics. We cruised from Paris (wonderful to see), and the end destination was the Beaches at Normandy which was so moving. Lots great stops along the way in small villages and at Monet's Garden - fabulous, brought a print home to remind me of this trip! Truly loved all of the old architecture. Everything was wonderful about this vacation with the following exceptions: One of the reasons that I booked this trip was the option to see "Downton Abbey", It ended up near the end of the booking that this side excursion was not available. It turned out that Viking knew all along that this excursion might not be an option, they just hoped it would be available for booking. I felt kind of duped, but such is life and our Travel Agent was able to book us on a similar experience. The food was less than expected. Some meals were very good, some were mediocre. The chicken at dinner had no flavor and tasted like it had been boiled. The scrambled eggs at the breakfast buffet were always cold. Desserts were always excellent!! Not everything can be perfect. The worst experience happened after our return and it is the reason I will not cruise with Viking again. I purchased binoculars at the ship's store as a gift to my granddaughter who was interested in bird watching. When I got home I found that the piece on top between the lenses that you use to focus never did become clear. It was also difficult for me to move that piece and would have been impossible for a 6-year old. They sent me another pair but in spite of asking that they check it for this problem, it arrived with the same issue. I then asked for a refund, and was told that I'd have to mail the defective binoculars back to them and I would have to pay for the postage. I questioned the "Customer Service" agent, Kayla, and while she wasn't overly rude. she stood firm that this was their policy. So, for what should have been a $19 refund, I got a $7.37 refund after postage. This isn't about the money, it's about their requirement that I cover the postage to return something I bought from them that was defective. After what I spent on the cruise it seems unbelievably cheap. For the sake of $11.63 postage, they have lost a future customer. Doesn't seem like good business to me!! Read Less

The shore excursions and the talks before them were great. Those talks prepared us well for the excursions. We all learned quite a bit about the places we visited. Since the cruise was primarily for the boys, not knowing whether they would ever get back to Paris, the Normandy beaches and the wonderful towns on the Seine, they will have lasting memories of the places we visited and have the desire to return to France at a later date. The Rinda trip from Paris to Normandy was spectacular. I loved the port stops in Vernon/Giverny, Rouen and Les Andelys. The ship was gorgeous, the food was amazing and the crew were a delight. A couple of suggestions: 1. The “Silver Spirits” bar package was well worth the $300 per cabin. Not that we were barflies, but it entitles you to almost any wine off their wine list. The house wines included with lunch and dinner were fine, but they had some really great ones on the list. 2. Be aware that the ship docks in Le Pecq, a suburb, and not Paris proper. If you want to go into the city on embarkation day, you can get there for less than 5 euros on the RER train. The St Germain en Leye station on the A1 line is close and stops in the heart of the city is close but it is a steep climb The included tour to Giverny is a bit rushed, while you have more time than you need. You might want to consider getting a cab to stay longer. The crowd does tend to skew older, although we did have some intergenerational groups. I am happy to answer any questions. Read Less

We were delighted with our Viking River Cruise - Paris and the Heart of Normandy. This allowed us to see the City of Lights, Monet’s Garden in Giverny, Rouen, the D-Day Beaches and other Normandy sites. Everything in our experience was superior! Our accommodations onboard were first class, comfortable and relaxing. Our tours were led by excellent, informative, and entertaining guides, who cleared the way, so we did not have to stand in line. The food was divine and was different every night. I have a gluten allergy, and I could find numerous options at every meal. I told Viking prior to my trip, and they arranged gluten-free meals on our shore excursions. We also do not drink alcohol and also told Viking prior to our trip. As a result, waiters always had sparkling water and diet Cokes ready for us at our meals. This was very thoughtful because wine come with the meals and we appreciated not having to ask repeatedly for non-alcoholic drinks. Such is the top quality service. Every staff member was there to help, was polite and went the extra mile. At Dinner, the Maitre’d stopped by each night to make sure our meal was just right. About the food: excellent! Every night features several regional specialties, but also served each night is a steak, chicken and seafood dish if the regional specialty is not your thing. There is a full buffet at breakfast and lunch. The cruise makes sure you have meal service if you have an early tour. Breakfast is served extra early on the day of departure. Make friends early in the trip, so you will have dinner companions. Dinner tables seat six to eight. There are no tables for two. About the tours:comprehensive and challenging. We paid for the optional shore excursions several times and it was worth the extra cost. We spent almost a full day in Paris seeing the sites, concluding with a tour of Notre Dame. This day also included lunch at a charming French Bistro. Our group was small, so our tour was almost a private one. On another tour of Paris, we stormed the Lovre in an intensive three hour minute tour. We saw all the famous works of art, including the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. Our guide was charming and very knowledgeable. But it was a bit of a challenge with much fast walking and many stairs. Included with the cruise was a tour of artist Claude Monet’s Garden in Giverny. Excellent planning meant we skipped the line and arrived before the crowd. We wished we had more time in the garden: our only regret was that we didn’t slow down amid the beauty. We loved the trip to Rouen Cathedral, which Monet painted numerous times, and the city of Rouen, where we enjoyed a leisurely cafe at a small restaurant. We travelled nearly two hours by luxury motorcoach to the D-Day beaches. We spent a good deal of time at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. We got to participate in a short, but moving memorial service held just for our tour group. My husband is a WWII buff, and he thought we could have spent more time at the beaches. Viking offered numerous tours each day, providing many choices. You would have a great time just with the provided tours, skipping the extra cost tours. All of our tours fascinated us and we were excited to learn new things. I will say that all the tours require a good bit of walking. All tours are marked as easy, moderate or demanding. My husband climbed a high hill to visit Richard the Lionheart’s castle. This was a demanding tour. The all-day Paris tour was easy to moderate. All my tours were easy, but I was walking ALOT! Onboard, we enjoyed a painting class and an art history session. We really enjoyed the coffee stations offering cappuccinos , fresh cookies or madeleines and and “bubbly” water 24/7. The WiFi worked well. All in all, we decided this was the best trip in our lives. It was perfect for us, and we highly recommend it. Read Less

Viking was recommended by our travel agent. We had never been to France and liked the cruise/tour options. The food and service was excellent. The tour guides were bilingual and very knowledgeable, We particularly enjoyed the drive to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery. The tour guide was very well versed about the area, the history and agricultural practices. Although beer and wine was included for lunch and dinner, we opted for the Silver Beverage package. It was well worth it as we had more "adult" beverage options and weren't limited to meal times or happy hours. We enjoyed the free time on board as well as when we were in port. We were given the opportunity to explore the towns on our own. The tour groups were a good size and the listening devices were very helpful. We are looking forward to our next great experience with Viking we hope in 2019. Read Less

This was our second River Cruise with Viking, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. As you may know, River ships are much smaller than ocean going vessels, and so they might not have as many amenities as some people might like. For example, there is no casino or big theater for shows. There are not multiple dining rooms. However, the ship is very comfortable and cozy, and it’s easy to meet people! The dining room is very nice with good views all around. The food was quite good at all meals, and the service was great. Our stateroom was a bedroom, bath, and small sitting area with small balcony. We were super comfortable. Our room was always kept clean and neat in a very timely manner. Storage space is somewhat limited, so don’t overpack! You don’t really need to, anyway, as the dress code is mostly casual. No formal wear required! (Thank goodness!) The included shore excursions were informative and enjoyable. Viking makes sure you don’t miss any highlights. If you chose to pay extra for a special excursion, you will get your money’s worth! The tour guides are very professional, speak excellent English, and really know their stuff! We actually extended our cruise by taking a 3-day tour of the Loire Valley. We saw great countryside, toured cities, cathedrals, and a winery. We even stayed in a French chateau. Excellent tour! The Viking staff were all friendly, knowledgeable, and professional you can’t beat the service they provide. It is true you may pay more for a Viking cruise, but we think it is travel money well spent. Read Less
