We had been on a Danube River Cruise with Viking years ago and we really enjoyed our vacation - everything was first class - food, service, accommodations, etc. Therefore, we decided to go on a Paris/Normandy trip this time around and we had such a wonderful time on the river cruise - along with the 3 day Paris extension - all through Viking with transfers included - Viking made our trip very easy for us! The food and service is just fabulous; the day trips - which are included in the price - were educational and fun; the ship was lovely - and the cabins are comfortable. The top deck has a track so you can get some exercise each day or you can sit and enjoy the sailing. The sights along the river are just beautiful - the homes, towns, churches are so lovely. Before dinner each evening, Viking staff discussed the following day's planned excursions - where we were going and what we would be seeing, etc. There was nothing that you would want or need. In Paris, we especially loved the illumination of the city in the evening - we felt ALL lit up - just like Paris itself! Viking river cruises more than met our expectations and we plan to take another Viking cruise next year - this will be our THIRD! Read Less

We had wanted to try a Viking River Cruise for some time. The timing of this cruise fit in with plans we had for visiting family in England and Paris, and it went to places we wanted to see. We were not disappointed! It was wonderful. The staff was very special and treated us like honored guests, even remembering our preferences. The piano player, Dimo, was wonderful and catered to our every musical whim. The included tours delightful and each guide was very knowledgeable about the city or area they were leading us through . The ship was perfectly designed for this type of trip and we liked that there weren't hordes of people on board. The food offered was very special and included many local delicacies, and we especially liked the Light offerings at each meal and often enjoyed having a meal on deck. We're looking forward to planning our next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

This was our third Viking River Cruise. We went on this cruise as we wished to visit Paris and the Normandy Beaches. When we booked this cruise over a year before we sailed we believed the ship would be moored close to the centre of Paris. Unfortunately before we sailed we were informed that the port authorities had moved the mooring position to Le Pecq some 11 miles from the centre of Paris. This meant that there was around a 45 minutes to one hour bus ride to the centre of Paris. Instead of the short walk we were hoping for. This was the only disappointing aspect of this cruise. Other than this the cruise was excellent. The ship and our cabin was spotlessly cleansed comfortable, the staff friendly and very attentive, nothing was too much trouble for them. The meals were excellent always well prepared and plenty of choice. There was always plenty of wine and other drinks served with the meals. The shore excursions were excellent and gave a good insight into French history, culture and the Second World War. They all ran to time and were excellently organised. The ships onboard musician was Peter was excellent and entertained us at lunch time and during the evening. There were various lectures on board but I cannot comment on these as I did not attend these. The daily briefings kept us well informed of the next day's activities. Transfers to the ship embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. There were no children on the ship which was a great bonus. I will certainly take another Viking River Cruise. Read Less

We spotted an exceptionally good price on a 6 day, 5 night cruise from Paris to the English Channel and jumped as fast as we could. The cruise was a charter by Legendary Journeys and, with the exception of initial problems in receiving information because of a computer issue, the trip was a real joy and we regret not also taking the "return trip" to Paris The Scenic Gem is a new design for cabins. Comments are below. Our desire on the trip was to relax and enjoy walking around small French towns at a comfortable rate, The trip worked perfectly for that and we were able to enjoy the company of good friends we met on the trip. The food was very good and the Chef was available for special requests. We totally enjoyed the dining experience from Breakfast to late night snacks. The entertainment was limited to a single musician playing the piano and guitar, as well as singing. Sounds concerning, but this guy was both experienced and talented and worked the room with skill. Service was excellent. Benjamin was the Legendary Cruise Director and spent a lot of time helping us contact embassy (my wife's purse with passport and green card were stolen in Paris before the cruise) and we really appreciated his efforts. All other staff were very friendly and worked hard to ensure you enjoyed your cruise. I was impressed to the point that I want to take the same ship next year? Visits to towns along the river ere a joy to stroll around and we would enjoy visiting each one again so I would rate them 5 Stars. Overall the cruise was fun of good food, great new friends and excellent service. Strongly recommended, Read Less

Although we have taken a number of ocean and Caribbean cruises, this was our first river cruise and our first visit to Paris. Bottom line: This was a very enjoyable trip, and that was essentially the comment we heard from everyone on the cruise with whom we spoke. A few people were unhappy that the Rinda docked in Le Pecq, rather than Paris as originally advertised, and had we not opted to take the 3-day pre-cruise extension in Paris I’m sure we, too, would have been. We made our reservations direct with Viking. Because this involved a number of firsts for us we purchased the air arrangements from Viking, along with an air “deviation”. And because of the deviation we chose we lost the airport transfer for our arrival in Paris, even though we were scheduled to arrive at about the same time as flights that Viking arranged. That’s Viking’s policy; however, after 3 attempts I got to someone at Viking who offered to try to get an exception for us. She succeeded. (Things did not go smoothly at the airport – it became obvious that we were swimming against the tide – however they did get us on one of the vans going to the hotel.) The pre-cruise hotel was 2 short blocks from the Eiffel Tower, 2 blocks from a Metro station, one block from an RER (suburban/regional railroad) station, and less than half a mile from a self-service laundromat. The Rinda is a clean, modern ship with a superb crew and staff. Everyone was competent, courteous, helpful, efficient and pleasant. The meals and wines were quite good. The one-man entertainment (Peter) was superb! All of the shore excursions were satisfactory; not as comprehensive as Road Scholar (Elder Hostel), which is to be expected, but on a par with (and better than some) excursions we have taken on other cruises. Recommendations of family members and friends led us to the VIking River Cruise. We were not disappointed! We loved the smaller ship, the somewhat slower pace. Everything was perfect! We have been on several larger ships for ocean cruises, and enjoyed them, but we have "matured,' and are now much more happy with a smaller, more compact space. We also appreciated the somewhat slower pace of the shore excursions, and the increased free time. The food was delicious, as was the wine (we purchased the silver spirit package,) and the bar service was attentive and prompt. We enjoyed relaxing on our balcony, as well as on the upper deck; the views were amazing! We liked the open seating in the dining room, and enjoyed getting to know many different travelers on the cruise. Due to the limited number of passengers, we felt more "connected" with the folks onboard, and we were ble to get to know the crew and staff, as well. Was it a good experience? Well, we have already booked 2 more VIking cruises! Read Less

After 25 ocean cruises, we decided to go "inland" and after hearing some good reviews about Vantage, decided to try them. This was our 2nd river cruise, the first being on Grand Circle. The pre-cruise arrangements were handled efficiently, courteously, and all questions handled promptly. Our flight arrangements were very good, non-stop flights from SFO to CDG. When we got to the ship we were greeted and taken to our deluxe cabin. The cabin was very nice, although a bit lacking in drawers. There were 2 tiny nightstands with barely room for the small lamp, and it would have been nice to have a few drawers in it. There were 2 TVs in the room, although you would have to sit on the couch sideways to look at the 2nd one. There was really no need for the two TVs. The tours were handled efficiently and with basically no problems. The tour guides in each port were very good and spoke excellent English. While we wish we had more time in some of the ports, like Caen, that is probably an individual thing. The things we saw were fabulous and we enjoyed the tours very much. However, the food, I hate to say, was terrible, barely edible. There was a limited salad bar with watery, flavorless dressings. The menus were odd, to say to least - - LOTS of pork with no flavor, fish we never heard of, and always some vegetarian dish. The few things that were always on the menu were not good at all, chicken, "steak" and salmon, and the baked potatoes were about the size of plums. The soups were all watery with, again, no flavor, and the bread was awful. The breakfast muffins were good, and I usually got some muffins and ate those during the day. They tried to be fancy with the menus with things like foie gras which was awful, and sauces that were just bizarre. On a scale of 1-10, would give the food a 2, sorry to say. Another thing we did not like was the fact that they automatically added 20 Euros pp tips per day and just put it on your bill. We have done ocean cruises with butlers and not paid that much. We chose to argue with them to get the figure reduced. They shouldn't add something automatically. Not good customer relations. I certainly wouldn't recommend this for children. The post-extension stay in Paris was at an average hotel, and we made the choice to go to their "illuminated Paris Can Can show." What a mistake. It was advertised as "high energy, women in petticoats, full skirts and black stockings." Nowhere did it say it was basically a topless show with young half naked women gyrating against men, flying in trapezes or on motorcycles. Some people were so offended that they took cabs back to the hotel. The food at this show was terrible. A complete waste of money. As I said, we have only done 2 river cruises, but Grand Circle was so much better and the food was very good. We were extremely disappointed in Vantage. We complained about the Can Can show and asked for our money back and the response was no. Great pre-cruise customer service, but very poor afterwards. Read Less

The cabins are kept very clean and have plenty of storage. The food is fabulous and chef makes a point of serving local dishes. We love being able to dine outside, especially at lunch time. The excursions are well organized and educational. Guides are local and well informed. We spent several days in Paris after the cruise and the hotel Viking used, Pullman, was well located, close to the Eiffel Tower. Rooms were very nice and a wonderful breakfast was included. There were many good restaurants within walking distance. Viking had a man at the desk able to help us with questions about the city and transportation. We have recommended Viking to many of our friends and will continue to do so! We are already planning our next trip. Read Less

My husband and I chose a Viking cruise because it combined Paris and Normandy. We travel internationally at least once a year and have taken many cruises. Through Viking, we arrived three days early for an optional, pre-cruise stay. Although we stayed in a suburban hotel 30 minutes Metro travel time from the heart of Paris, it was a quiet, clean hotel close to Metro, train, and excellent restaurants. Viking has a desk at the hotel to answer any questions and to help guests plan optional outings on the optional days before and after the cruise. The Viking ship was only three weeks old. The staff was attentive and enthusiastic; the excursions were outstanding with excellent guides who spoke flawless English. The average age of the passenger was 60+, and most guests were seasoned, international travelers. There were two families on board with well behaved teenagers. Our only criticism is in reference to the cabin, where there are under cabinet lights shining 24 hours a day in the bathroom; we managed to cover them fairly well with a towel. I would suggest that travelers sensitive to light bring eye masks. One of the best parts of the cruise was embarkation and disembarkation. A Viking representative met us at the airport and quickly, efficiently took us to our hotel. On the day of our departure, our flight did not leave until four pm. We were allowed to stay on the ship for both breakfast and lunch. A van took departing guests to the airport, where a Viking representative guided us through the baggage check-in process and did not leave us until we were in the actual line to check in ourselves. On many other cruises, the included, round-trip air trip ended up with air connections too close together in time, our running from terminal to terminal, and then no assigned seats with our having to beg for seats together on the particular air trip. Viking leaves the traveler with wonderful memories. Read Less

Wanted to see Paris and some of the french countryside. But the main reason for choosing this cruise was to go to Normandy. The tour of Normandy was good but way too short. we were able to see the Hi lites, but not enough time to explore the museum and see the films. Also would liked to spend more time at the memorial and try to find the graves of people from our state and town. Would liked to have been docked in Paris so we could see more of the city in our free time. Could have used a couple of days in the city to see more of the sights. I know this was a 7 day cruise and we did enjoy the tours we took. The ship and staff were excellent. The food was Excellent and plenty of it!. We have traveled with Viking on two other river cruises and were greatly pleased with the ports, tours, and attention of the staff to keep us informed and address any questions. The ship (being new) was in excellent condition, as the other ships we have occupied. Our cabin, while not large, was clean and comfortable. The lounge provided a pleasant area to relax, read and enjoy the scenery as we traveled. The dining was quite good, as was the staff who waited on our table. The opportunity to choose from dining areas other than the dining room was appreciated. It was pleasant to find that staff members would acknowledge us by name and show an appropriate level of personal interest. We have, and will continue to recommend Viking as an excellent way to not only see various cities in Europe, but also gain a better understanding of their history and significance. We look forward to traveling with Viking in the future. Read Less

The crew was friendly and professional. We would love to cruise the Rhine river too. The Viking was so different from the Ocean cruises we have been on. We liked the personal attention and small ship experience. The tour guides were learned and friendly. The little things the crew did when we returned from town were so special. We did the 7 day river cruise with 2 days on the Front end in Paris then Trier to Nuremberg and 4 days on the back end in Prague. Viking was outstanding and had staff in place to support us from our arrival at the airport in Paris until our departure at the airport in Prague. You will not be bored. The bus tour in Paris was great. You have time on your own to do what you want as well but make sure you try to book those well in advance (months) so you do not have to stand in lines. On board the food was great and we loved the staff from the captain on down to the housekeeping staff. The boat is small enough that you get to know the staff and they are so friendly and helpful and they CARE. The captain and director are their to meet everyone as they come back from the shore excursions. The castles, churches and local guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. The head sets were very helpful. Wish I could have recorded everything that was said to match up with the pictures we took. Cruising on these river ships is amazing. They feel big on the inside but they have been built to a custom size to allow them to navigate the lock system. Great to watching and learn about how it works. The scenery was great. So different from monstrous ocean cruise ships - different in a good way. No complaints at all. Read Less

We traveled on the final cruise of the year, we spent Christmas in Rouen as the Normandy Beaches excursion would have fallen on a Holiday. This is a very pleasant easy trip. Viking was on the ball, they rearranged the itinerary so that we would not miss a thing, a little fast paced to get a day ahead, but no inconvenience to passengers. This cruise spends a great deal of river time, so if you enjoy leisure time, this is your trip. The itinerary was not overcrowded, and the free time was generous. I really fell in love with France, it wasn't on my list to see, and was pleasantly surprised on its beauty and friendliness. After the free day in Paris and the tour through the Louvre, I came to love the city, it will definitely be on my list to return and spend more time. The cruise had all the highlights of the areas to see in Normandy, which is a really lovely portion of France. The Normandy landing tour was a Long day, it is just too far to break it down to 2 days, although I really think you could spend 2 whole days on the history alone in the area.Once again Viking was first class, this was our 5th cruise with them, and the new Long ships are really first rate. We upgraded to a suite and found it very much worth it with the extra down time this cruise afforded. If you are looking for a very good relaxing short trip through beautiful countryside and some generous history thrown in this is your cruise. Read Less

We took the 12 day City of Lights Viking Cruise with an extended stay in Paris and Prague. In Paris, we stayed at the Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel Hotel and in Prague, we stayed at the Hilton Prague. Both hotels were exceptional. Viking did not nickel and dime us with our accommodations. Both hotels are 4-5 star hotels and I have nothing but admiration for the staff of both hotels for their dedication to service and professionalism. We were at the Idun long ship but due to the lower water in the Rhine river, we were switched to Oden. Both ships were outstanding with great staff. The switch was no problem at all as Viking took care of everything, transfer and taking care of the luggages. The Viking staff were all very courteous, hardworking and helpful. Our Program Director, Stephanie, was great. She never left our side and took care of everything. She worked relentlessly to make sure that everything was taken care of. Viking River Cruise staff were all very well organized and know what they are doing. Everything was first class. The tour buses are mostly brand new (some made by Mercedes Benz) and very comfortable. We are very appreciative of the local tour guides who were born and raised in those areas who gave us a feel of what it would be like to live in the area and it's rich history. We felt like locals ourselves even for a short time. Overall, I would recommend the Viking River Cruise to everyone and anyone. We have already made plans to take a Viking Cruise in 2017. Read Less

We took the Paris and the Heart of Normandy cruise on October 26. Our real disappointment was the location of the dock. It was several miles outside of Paris which made it hard to visit the City whenever we wanted. That being said, the cruise, the staff, the food, and the scenery was wonderful. One of the best stops was the home of Monet and viewing his beautiful garden. Even though it was the end of the season (winter was fast approaching), we could still see the beauty in the garden. From every angle there was a new scene to paint or photograph. No wonder Monet spent so much time there. The next favorite thing was the shopping trip to a local market with the Chef. It was most interesting and informative. Of course, the main destination and main attraction was the Cemetery and Beaches of Normandy. We toured Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, where we had a private tribute to the brave men who gave so much there 70 years ago. This was one of the most moving and emotional parts of the trip. Visiting the almost 10,000 graves of American Soldiers who died there and seeing the wall listing the thousands of names of those who could not be located. We were disappointed only in that our visit was too short. We wish Viking would allow 2 days to see all of this. Read Less

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip along the Seine up to Normandy--at least until the Norovirus started hitting the passengers. I estimate that 10-25% of the passengers got sick at some point and their was NOTHING on board to alleviate any symptoms. It was like we're all on our own. Infection rate could have been higher or lower because virtually nothing was said by the staff publicly and I would expect them to understate the problem. Do all river cruises experience Norovirus outbreaks? Other than that, I loved the cruise, particularly the casualness, friendliness of staff and passengers alike, and the food. I have no complaints about the cruise itself. The staff admitted that the Neptune was built in 2001 and this was the next to last cruise before it was sold to another company. My father had landed on Omaha Beach during the summer of 1944. I wanted to see where he had been and try to imagine what it must have been like. The Museum at Arromanches was excellent. I have worked in museums all my life and I was impressed with the story they tried to tell. I was particularly struck with the faces on some of the manikins - they were so young! Going to see where my dad had been so many years ago meant taking a cruise along the Seine and then a bus to the beaches. It was a very moving experience for me and I felt that Viking did the ceremony at the American Cemetary with great sensitivity. I am glad a took the opportunity to go on this trip, The cruise as a whole was excellent, I enjoyed the food, particularly the dishes from Normandy that we got to try. The tours were also very good, they went interesting places and the pace was such that you got to see everything. I appreciated the fact that the boats had a "leisurely" option for those guests who did not feel able to walk with the rest of the group. While I went with the regular tours, on a previous river cruise, I had had to take the leisurely option and I feel I saw everything the others had seen. That is a great idea. Viking is doing a good job and I feel certain I will take another river cruise before to long. Read Less

I was disappointed that the boat did not dock within walking distance to the town at each port. It was so much more enjoyable when that was possible. The guides in each port were terrific. They were knowledgeable, interesting, and aware of our needs i.e. directions during free time, rest room breaks, recommendations. I was disappointed in the lunch that was served at the hotel in Heidelberg although eating with a college student was a nice touch. Unfortunately we did not arrive in Prague until late afternoon and by the time we got to our room, the day was almost over. Having only Sunday to tour the city and leaving early Monday morning for our flight home didn't leave much time to enjoy Prague. It was one reason we chose this trip. The cruise was spectacular. The entire staff was perfect. The tours were all interesting and really very well planned. We had time to see the points of interest and hear all the discussions about the history and local flavor. Weather was a little bit of an issue and it means packing clothes that will work under a variety of situations. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and broken in since walking is a big part of the trip. We travelled with friends but certainly during the trip met many people that we interacted with on a daily basis. This was certainly part of the fun. Every evening there was an activity/event in the ballroom and always worth going. Our favorite was the glass blowing. Our room had a television but we didn't turn it on until the last day! The internet connection was the only downside of the entire trip. Slow and hard to access. This was not a big issue for us but there was certainly grumbling about it. The food was all excellent. The open dining worked well and you meet people along the way and certainly eat with friends old and new. Unlike some cruises the food is not non-stop. That actually worked well and kept the calories and eating in general in a more normal scope. You are certainly never hungry. We bought the bar special for the trip and really enjoyed the crowd that routinely went there in the evening. As a beer drinker I would have liked more options but it was more than adequate. Service was 5 star in all ways. We plan to go again and try a new route. Read Less

My wife and I selected the Paris and Heart of Normandy Viking River Cruise (VRC) as a post-retirement celebration, and did we ever make an excellent choice. Simply stated, we had the best vacation ever. Itinerary was first rate. The staff at VRC were of considerable assistance in helping us make the travel arrangements for the trip. We sailed on Viking Rinda. The ships captain, the tour leader, and members of the crew welcomed us on board and assisted us with the check-in process. Our onboard experience was outstanding. The crew was excellent, the room was very comfortable and spacious, the food was fresh, tasty, and plentiful, and the servers were pleasant and helpful. All in all, we could not have asked for a better onboard experience. We were also impressed with the quality of the excursions that were a key feature of our experience. The VRC planners did an excellent job of selecting points of interest to visit throughout the trip, beginning the visit to Notre Dame in Paris and continuing to the visit of Omaha Beach in Normandy. Of course, the quality of these visits was enhanced by the knowledgeable guides that we encountered. We especially appreciated having access to the communication system that allowed the guides to tell their stories. And the excursions provided just the right mix of structured and free time. In short, my wife and I had a post-retirement experience that would be hard to beat. More importantly for VRC, our experience served to whet our appetite for other cruises. Read Less

We were so excited to sail on this river cruise line, as we had heard so much about it. Unfortunately we and others on the ship soon became ill. Our embarking time was delayed on the first day so they could clean the ship, as so many on the cruise the prior week had come down with a gastrointestinal illness. In fact, several days before arriving, we were sent an email stating that our arrival would be delayed several hours so they could clean/disinfect the ship to address the illness passengers on the week of September 12 experienced. It was described by staff as one person getting ill, then others getting sick all week long. This is exactly what happened to us. On our first day, instead of being able to have lunch on board, we were directed to a hotel conference room where we were given water and coffee/tea, but no food (it was all gone by the time we arrived but was only croissants anyway). We soon set off on our own and saw some sights and found a great cafe to have lunch right by the Eiffel Tower. We also purchased the extension in Paris post-cruise, and my husband was very ill the day after we left the boat, as were several others in the group of 24 who stayed on in Paris. We had to call in a doctor during our Paris stay. All of the illness cast a shadow over the cruise, as we were worried that we would get sick, which eventually did happen. They stressed that everyone should use the anti-germ agent they provided outside of the restaurant, but that still didn't prevent the spread of disease. Aside from the significant problem of illness, the cruise was OK. We spent too much time in Vernon, where there is little to see, and not enough in other areas. There were some beautiful cities along the Seine that we couldn't visit, and we usually had to make choices between two very good tours in other areas, so we felt we missed a lot. There was a lot of time during two days where we "cruised". The staff was perky and helpful, and the rooms were kept clean. The cabins were small but functional. When we saw other ships on other lines as they passed us on the Seine, we realized that ours was not a great ship. The food was good, with lots of choices. However, after the first few illness cases early on, I did not take any fresh food, only cooked or sealed items, so I think I missed out on a lot of good food experiences. The crew redirected the next batch of cruisers on September 27 to the same hotel where we waited to board on our first day, so I just hope they did a better job of cleaning the ship before they let the m board. This was not an all-inclusive tour, and we felt that tips were clearly expected. Our pot-trip was about $1800.00, and the hotel would have cost about $900.00 or so if we booked on line, so we were disappointed that the Viking staff stressed how much she should have gotten for her tips. The one tour that was included was very good, but the support was not worth the extra $900.00 we paid (this did include transfers to the hotel and then the airport, but this was still a lot of extra money). We will probably take another cruise, but will book with another line. Read Less

The itinerary was very good and the stop at Normandy was really special. The crew was wonderful. The food was ok. The wine was served amply. The cabin was ok but the carpeting there and throughout the ship was in poor condition and stained. I understand it's one of its final sailings. It is ready to retire. All in all we enjoyed the trip and the one we did immediately following through southern France. That one was on the new longboat and can't say enough of that one. Five stars Viking is a great company and delivers a lot for a great price. Read Less

This was our first cruise of any kind. Decided to try a river cruise since the boats are smaller and there are fewer people. Really enjoyed our time on the boat. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Meals were wonderful; it was fun to try out some new foods. Side excursions were educational. We liked looking out our windows and seeing barges and other vessels sailing by us. Also loved seeing the houses along the Seine. Our cabin was great. Such a luxury to have our bed made and turned down each day. Evening entertainment was enjoyable. Some negative stuff: noisy dining room, a bit too much free wine for guests, some guests were narrow-minded about learning new stuff. Read Less
