This was the year of the great French roast, Paris at 35ºC and similar to that all the cruise long. The payback was clear blue skies, no rain and great photos. The ship was 100% full, hence the service levels in the public areas were stretched. This cruise is a mixture of great French wines and cheeses (approx 450 different cheeses to be tasted), as far as scenery goes the highlights are the cities. The visit to an old hospital and nearby wine tasting at Marche aux Vin was very interesting, as was our first tasting of French nougat which is based on egg white and honey, as was the truffle farm (with charming hosts & dog). The Sundowners excursion (a walk to a nearby fortress tower) for wine/beer/nibbles with live musicians in a cool afternoon breeze was very hard to take. The itinerary was exactly as published. Compliments have to be given to all the bus drivers - they were very professional, safe drivers who helped some of our fellow passengers with their walkers. Driving through the French countryside was most enjoyable. Read Less

We chose this cruise after a presentation in Peterborough and it lived up to all expectations. It was our first experience of Scenic but it certainly will not be the last. The whole trip was trouble free and with it being all in we did not have to worry about tips, costs of excursions, drinks etc. The whole ship was immaculate from the galley (yes we did have a look around and marvelled how the chefs produced such fantastic food in such a small area) to the cabins. The cabin staff were very efficient making beds and cleaning the bathroom not once but twice after our evening shower leaving a cleverly folded towel on the bed to welcome us back. All the staff from the Captain to cabin staff were friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble we just had to ask. The cruise Director was extremely entertaining and other entertainment was good especially the Crew Show. The waiters were always on hand to cater for all our needs and on the day of the barbecue on the sun deck must have walked miles making sure we all had drinks. We were invited to have dinner in L'Amour restaurant which turned out to be a lovely evening with a French menu and a variety of wines to be sampled. Whilst the waiters were all attentive in the Crystal Room they were particularly so in L'Amour making us feel very special. An evening to remember. Read Less

We were especially interested in the combination of Paris and the Normandy Beaches aspects. The ship, staff, food, shore excursions, and all travel logistics were excellent! Not as many castles as some other cruises, but very much enjoyed the Seine River views of French villages and countryside. Had time to explore Paris, both on our own and with guided tours, both before departure and last day before leaving for home. The Normandy Beaches full-day excursion was very educational, emotional, and moving. For us personally it was the best part of the cruise. So much to see, had to pick and choose what we most wanted to see. The tours of The Louvre, Versailles, and Monet's gardens and home were great, both visually and educationally. The tour guides were excellent. This was our first river cruise and it was wonderful. The combination of excellent food and wine, service, and accommodations made the Viking cruise a great experience. Will definitely do it again with Viking! Read Less

We had traveled with Viking before (Danube) and were very satisfied. My husband"s mother is very frail and the risk free offer really meant a lot to us. Paris was one of the few international cities that we had not visited. First time on a Long Boat (Rolf). We were met with a smile at Charles DeGaulle Airport. Crew went out of their way constantly. The cabin was well appointed and the bed was so comfortable. The ship was quiet at night so sleeping was a real nice dream. Dining was just wonderful. Food was fabulous! We like picking a different group to dine with each meal if we wanted. We met so many wonderful people. Entertainment was small but really well done. Loved the piano in the bar. The player was really talented. The crew was so helpful and cheerful. Loved the shore excursions. Especially the trip to Josephine and Napoleon's house and Normandy. Monet's Garden was just lovely. The Lourve was crowded and the many stairs were difficult to maneuver, but glad we saw the Mona Lisa, although anticlimactic. Dress was business casual or casual. My husband brought a sport coat and never wore it. No fancy dress for the capitan's dinner. I have told friends and family that we will travel only with Viking. Read Less

I accompanied an older relative who suggested Scenic, and was happy to do so being an Australian company. The ship was amazing, clean, beautifully turned out, lovely suites, great staff, above average food. What disappointed me was the company that Scenic contract their onshore excursions to. Three (3) places on the itinerary were closed, some of the special attractions were not so special and there was a consistent lack of information as to the capability of travellers to attend these attractions. Yes, we travel knowing our capabilities, but as the average age of the Scenic traveller on this ship was about 70, a lot had walking difficulties. So information about how far, how steep and how long, should be included, rather than, slow, moderate or hard going as a description. Scenic need to 'Mystery Shop" their own cruises to get a better understanding of what is being offered onshore. We had a late flight out at the end of the trip so organised a 'day stay' hotel room to wait our time to depart. We had spoken with Scenic in Australia about this, and basically got the answer, you board at 4pm and depart the ship at 9am. This is NOT so. Passengers were boarding from about 9am and some were not departing until 5:30pm. We could have stayed on board in the lounge until time to depart to the airport instead of spending 250E for a 'day stay' room in a hotel. Would I recommend Scenic, yes I would solely based on the onboard experience, but feel they need to up their game with regards to this particular cruise and its onshore attractions. Read Less

Definitely a top-notch cruise ship and cruise line. The pros included friendliness of all staff, ports and scenery (the light presentation at Rouen cathedral at night is a must-see!). Aquavit Terrace for dining in the evening is apparently a well-kept secret. We actually dined there almost as many nights as in the formal dining room....a fabulous experience to enjoy gourmet food al fresco on the bow of the ship while cruising at dusk.....however less than a dozen fellow passengers partook in this option on the nights we dined outside. The cons included having a few tour guides that almost ruined our experience: one on Giverny excursion who liked to hear himself talk, dragged the group along and whose French-accented English was very difficult to understand (and I even speak French). We finally broke away from group and toured garden and house on our own. The second guide on the Normandy excursion was completely offensive as she opted to use the long bus ride to get on her soapbox and offer political opinions that were clearly inappropriate. It takes a lot to offend my husband and he was livid. As much as I would like to say that I would recommend a Viking Cruise to adults over 50 I really feel that if we ever have the opportunity to experience Viking again (and we hope to), it'll be at least ten years before we do so. We're both 56 and were often frustrated by older passengers for whom we had to wait, and slowed down our excursions. I love and enjoy senior travelers but we wanted to pack as much as we could in this once-in-a-lifetime trip, and felt we could have easily done more if we hadn't felt pulled back. Read Less

This trip was a special present to my wife who was celebrating a milestone birthday and special it was thanks to the people at Viking! We had never on been on a river cruise so this was somewhat of an experiment. We had heard about Viking river cruises from the ads and in conversations with friends who had been on Viking river cruises before (including the very one we took--Paris to Normandy with the 3 day extension in Paris) and gave nothing but rave reviews. We chose this particular route because we had been in Paris briefly many years ago and wanted to return. Also, being a gardener, my wife wanted to see Monet's gardens and the gardens at Versailles, as well as the gardens in Paris. The day trip to the Normandy Beaches and the American Cemetery was a plus for me as my father served in Europe after D-Day--it should not be missed by any American, Brit or Canadian. The stops along the way--Giverny, Vernon, Rouen, Les Andelys--and the time spent on the upper deck or on the cabin's veranda were wonderful. (Don't miss the nighttime light show in Rouen). Start to finish the trip was first class--the Viking website is a great resource and if used properly, greatly facilitates the trip; transfers to and from the ship were well organized and minimized the stress usually accompanying foreign travel; the ship was immaculate and well suited to relaxation; the cabin with veranda was comfortable and accommodating; the crew was friendly and eager to help; the food was plentiful, high quality, delicious and included many special dishes (including a special birthday cake on my wife's birthday); the tours were well-planned and well executed with excellent local guides and we didn't feel like we were being rushed around just for the sake of checking off "must see" sites (there was often time available to explore the towns on your own). The 3 extra days in Paris were all we hoped they would be thanks to the friendly guidance of the Viking concierge at the hotel (Ampere). The hotel was small and somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle, but that was no problem. The plus was that a lovely park (Parc Monceau) was within walking distance and we spent our last evening there. There was a Metro station within a block of the hotel and we were able to get around the city with ease after an in-station tutorial by the Viking concierge. She was also of great help planning our days and managed the departure to the airport very efficiently. An unexpected bonus was being greeted at the airport by a Viking representative who literally walked us though the check-in process, saving us time and possibly some grief. All-in-all, the best trip we have ever taken. We've already signed up to take the Lyon & Provence cruise and French Riviera extension next spring. Thanks Viking! Read Less

The name of this cruise is "Spectacular South of France". This cruise spends most evenings in ports large and small. The first night is is in Paris, which is not on the river cruised; Saone and Rhone rivers. We gathered for a nights stay at the Scenic's host hotel in Paris. Nice 4 star hotel. The next morning our bags were collected from the hallway at the designated time and we were bussed to the train station for our day trip to Dijon. We were given a short tour. Then we boarded a bus and were transported to the ship that was docked in Chalon-sur-Saone. This is almost an all-inclusive cruise, All drinks, meals, tips, great internet service and shore excursions are included. We also had several special events off the ship that were also included. We visited Tournus, Cluney, Macon, Lyon, Tournon,Viviers, Ardeche National Park, Chateauneuf-du-pape, Avignon, Arles and Tarascon via bus or port. This cruise line obviously caters to Australians and Brits, most of whom were third, fourth or five time regulars with Scenic. We had a blast being one of two American couples. The Australians, in particular, were fascinated by our politics and gun rights. We found the "aussies" to be much more sociable than our American associates back home. We were invited to dine with several separate couples and made some great friends. I can not say enough about the quality of the river cruise experience. On this cruise, you sit where you want, lounge where you want in a wonderfully appointed river "Spaceship". Go on shore excursions where and when you want. The food was top notch, service was impeccable; these guys do not skimp. Our butler "concierge level room" made my wife feel like a queen which made my trip wonderful. Two things I particularly liked about this cruise was the ability tour on your own by foot or electric assisted bike with a "GPS like device" that would self guide you through the port towns. You can also use this device to give you facts about places you see from your balcony while cruising and it is also used for tour guided trips to help you hear better.. We will return to travel with Scenic. The rooms, and bathrooms were balconies were kept clean and the refrigerator was stocked twice a day. Read Less

The customer service by all the employees was outstanding. The daily update meeting for what the next day would bring was very informative. The food was THE BEST EVER!. I enjoyed the wine that was recommended to drink at each dinner too! We are currently planning on a next cruise with Viking. We have done ocean cruises in the past, but I prefer the river cruise. It was more quaint and we got chances to meet many wonderful people that we currently are still in touch with. This river cruise was I feel that best value for the money spent. It included the excursions, the airport transfers, breadfast, lunch & dinner. The complimentary wine with lunch and dinner was over the top! In the best way!!. Read Less

Had a friend who had taken a river cruise in Germany. Very impressed with Viking and taking another ocean cruise in May 2017. This river cruise was after a 7 day cruise on the Delling. Enjoyed Delling more mostly because of the place visited in southern France. Staff and facilities on both ships were excellent. Staff seemed to anticipate guest needs. The food was superb and chef and staff very friendly and helpful. The cabins were comfortable and bathroom and shower were above average. Enjoyed Normandy the most even though it was a long bus trip. Gave us enough time to see all the sites and do any shopping we wished to do. Paris was so large and could only do a limited number of tours but feel received best value for tours I was on. Also Paris was very crowded. Loved Notre Dame and had the best shopping. The guides on the tours were all very knowledgeable and very friendly. Overall a very wonderful vacation. Impressed with Viking so am on another ocean cruise in May 2017. Read Less

Just returned from Uniworld's 14 day "Portrait of Majestic France" itinerary. This is a "back-to-back itinerary" with 7 days on the River Baroness on the Seine River from Paris through the Normandy region and 7 days on the River Royale that covers the Bordeaux region in the south of France. This itinerary also included an escorted Train Transfer on a GTV Train between Paris and Bordeaux. Our experience is that Uniworld's brochures are absolutely true when they describe the exceptional service that their staff provide. Both ships were always spotless and the food was exquisite. The Shore Excursions [included in the Cruise Fare] are PHOENOMENAL, (if anything they are underrated in Uniworld's brochures). As noted in previous reviews, River Ship cabins are not as large as their Ocean Counterparts. In addition, River Ships do not offer the large stage shows but do have enjoyable musical entertainment every evening after dinner. There are also evening Port Talks by the Cruise Directors describing the next days activities in thorough detail. Embarkation and Disembarkation were both handled extremely well. There is free WiFi on board but the bandwidth is limited (fine for text emails but blocks most graphics and entertainment streaming) The age range of our fellow passengers was well over 65 so this is not a cruise recommended for children or Honeymooners. Both ships sailed with about 1/2 of their 128 passenger capacities. I can highly recommend Uniworld's "Portrait of Majestic France" itinerary. It was the trip of a lifetime! Read Less

Never having been anywhere else in France besides Paris, we wanted to particularly see Normandy and all the history. Totally enjoyed the overnights in several ports and the included shore excursions. Paris to Normandy round trip was fabulous. From the start at embarkation, which there were no lines and only to show your passport and get your room key was out of the norm and greatly appreciated. The ship is new and well done in terms of layout and design and colors. The cabin was beautiful. Service on the entire cruise was outstanding. Food extraordinary, better than the last time we had sailed on Viking. They have upped their game. Entertainment was ok, nothing spectacular, but just enjoying dinner and the night air was enough for us. The only con I can think of is that a plunge pool would've been a nice touch. Even though the weather was slightly inclement, being able to take a quick dip would have been nice. Or even have a couple of hot tubs to ease those aching walking muscles. Definitely would recommend this to anyone who wants to see northern France and the WW2 history. Read Less

We did not want to do a cruise with hundreds of people and Viking offered something smaller and more intimate with a great reputation to support it. From what we had read and heard from friends, Viking was the best choice and we were not disappointed. The ship, staff and experience was beyond all of our expectations. From the moment we arrived we felt that this was what we were looking for as a vacation experience. Viking focused on what our needs were, we were able to personalize our experience and do as much or as little as we desired. Our fellow guests were friendly and people we truly enjoyed spending our time with, many of whom traveled with Viking in the past. We plan to vacation in the future with this wonderful company. I chose this ship originally for the itinerary -- mainly Normandy and Giverney. The Seine River caused a few problems from all the rain it was quite high. We needed to be transported to Rouen to board the ship. From start to finish the tour director Jean Lund did an absolutely fabulous job during the entire cruise. Faced with adversity he managed to reroute the cruise and still keep everyone more than satisfied. The staterooms were wonderful. This is my 3rd Avalon River cruise and I love them. The dining, entertainment and shore excursions were great. Also, to note what a 'class act' Avalon is --- They gave passengers an opportunity to not sail and for those that chose to stay on the ship gave all 1/2 off their fare!! They also included all shore excursions (while most are included) they included ones that had charges. When we couldn't return to Paris by ship they put us on the motor coaches back to the hotel. They gave us money for lunch both days and included a fabulous dinner both evenings with free flowing wine. Wonderful cruise and exceptional cruise line!!! Read Less

The meals on board are always great and there is a wonderful variety of foods for all taste. Our Butler always made special attention to our requirements and on this cruise like the past we arranged for afternoon tea with friends in our room most days so we could enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Normally we would have 2 other couples with us make 6 which is the right size. Port and Shore excursions met our needs as per the documentation. The tour guides are especially good and imparted their knowledge of the varies tourist sites. Ship - Scenic Diamond is always spotless and the staff look after all on board. The Cruise Directors are interesting people who manage the impossible and seem to exceed your expectations - wonderful managers of the customers, guides and buses etc. We feel very confident in Scenic to deliver and they do. This was our first river cruise with AMA Waterways and our third river cruise overall in addition to six ocean cruises. Like the other two river cruises, AMA Waterways did an outstanding job of providing a great itinerary, extensive service, a wonderful boat and crew, and gourmet dining. We enjoyed the floor to ceiling sliding glass door on our room's French balcony. WiFi was available throughout the boat. Our ride was the most quiet of the three river cruises we have taken. The upbeat crew of 42 (Vinny, Jullien, Alex, Boyan and Dragon, to name a few) seemed to have as good a time as we were having. Our fellow (119) travelers were mostly American with a few from places like Canada, England, and New Zealand. Most people dressed as advised in "country club casual." There was a variety of attire. AMA Waterways provides free beer and wine at lunch and dinner. There was also a special Chef's Table made available for 24 each night that served a five or six course gourmet dinner in a glass enclosed room with a view at the rear of the boat. There were about 20 bikes available for excursions, umbrellas for everyone, a jacuzzi, outdoor lounge chairs, and a fitness center. Twice we were entertained by female vocalists singing French songs. The electrical outlets are the typical two prong European plugs, but adaptors and converters are available. The excursions were exceptional. AMA Waterways showed their class and flexibility when we encountered a rising Seine River forcing us to stay in one town several nights. They brought in buses to complete the excursions (always with headsets to facilitate hearing). To us, it looked effortless. But, there must be quite a support group within AMA Waterways. At the end of our trip, four of us had a late flight departure. We were driven in a private car to CDG airport and met at the curb by an AMA Waterway representative (Mustafa) who escorted us through the entire check-in procedure up to security. Another example of outstanding AMA Waterway detailed service. Read Less

This was our first journey to Europe. We were introduced to Viking by friends who accompanied us on the cruise. We used Viking Air which includes transportation to and from the airport. The Viking agent actually walked all passengers in our van into the airport to ensure we had no problems navigating the check-in process. We traveled on the Viking Rinda, cruising down the Seine from Paris to Normandy. What a wonderful and carefree way to travel. The Viking experience offers excellent customer service from start to finish. Staff on board the ship go out of their way to engage in conversation and ensure your care and comfort. Cuisine is very good and the chef incorporates local recipes to enhance the ambiance and experience of local flavors. Dining is freestyle which offers the opportunity to make new friends. We had a French Balcony cabin with a wonderful view out the sliding glass door. The bed was very comfortable. There is ample storage and space to store all travel necessities. There is also very good in room entertainment. Wifi is available at no cost, but can be spotty at times, depending on location. We absolutely loved the tours. Viking handles everything and excursions ran smoothly and on time. We elected to add a couple special tours, Palace of Versailles and Paris by Night. We happened to be at the beaches of Normandy on Memorial Day, which was very touching. Cruising down the Seine is beautiful and peaceful. The gardens and home of Monet were exquisite. We experienced art and history at it's best through the great planning of Viking River Cruises. Read Less

We chose Viking River Cruise because I had heard wonderful things about them from others where I live in Colorado. I wanted to do the Normandy to Paris cruise because my father was a World War II veteran and I wanted to see Normandy and parts of France including Paris. Furthermore, we took an Alaska Cruise tour last year and wife didn't enjoy being at sea, hence the river cruise. The Kadlin was wonderful, a new ship and our verandah stateroom (307)was great- I did spend some time on the balcony enjoying a glass of wine and watching the scenery- the observation deck was also great. I went for walks around its circumference and enjoy a beer or glass of wine while watching the countryside go by. The food was wonderful- all three meals each day. We traveled with some old classmates from Virginia and met another two couples that we shared dinners and tours with making the trip more enjoyable. The evening meals were, well, just excellent, and the wines well matched to the meals, the lamb was great and so was the seafood. We enjoyed the classes on cheeses, cooking and tour through the galley. Being an old Navy vet, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the Captain and seeing the pilot house. The service was also very good, our hotel staff was wonderful and we grew to enjoy our wait staff at the evening meals. The bar staff was also very good. The ports and shore excursions were very good, I would like to have spent more time or seen more of the Normandy beaches but understand the time limitations. The lunch venue was good, lending some local color to the excursion. We really liked our Rouen tour guide ( I wish I remembered her name, but she had studied in Australia, if I remember right). In general, the tour guides were very good and packed with local information and history. The bus tour of Paris was quite good, giving us a taste of Paris which were able to utilize when we spend additional time in Paris. We didn't travel with children, but do feel that this cruise would be appropriate for children in the their teens or older. We would definitely go again and can hardly wait for the next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

This was our second river cruise and it will not be our last. Our cruise director, Ken, was fabulous. Our cabin steward was wonderful, too. Each day we took a tour with Viking and used the head phones in our room that we charged every night. The only downside was that the ship was technically not docked in Paris but about a half hour drive away with no view of the city. Plus, there wasn't much cruising because we didn't go very far up the Seine. Our first river cruise with Viking was 15 nights from Amsterdam to Budapest and an add on excursion to Prague; if you are looking for more cruising time, that is the cruise to take! Read Less

Our tour director was the best I've ever had. I'm ready to do it again! There was never a hitch in loading or unloading when transferring between the bus and ship. Viking had personnel available at each step of the way from the airport. It was the same with leaving. Getting the airport transfers was one of the best things we did. The staff interacted with each other in a humorous respectful way. The shore excursions were very interesting and enjoyable. The only glitch was the tour of the Normandy beaches was poor in the morning. But great after lunch for the second part of the day. Since the cruise targets people interested in the Normandy beaches I believe they need to fix this. Quality of service, tours and boat. We have traveled with Viking before and chose to go again. We had exceptional food, were offered shorter walking tours and activities as well. The boat has lots of space and we like the moving round from table to table for meals to meet more people. The side trip to Normandy Beach was especially important as my father had landed in the same area during WWII. There was additional time at port in Paris in which we were able to connect with our German daughter (exchange student) and walk the streets of Paris. We are not shoppers who need additional items but did enjoy seeing outdoor markets, small villages and places for lunch or a drink. The staff was well organized and the processes for getting on/off the board were smooth. We had added the option of airport pick-up and delivery which went well. We have marked off one of our bucket list items with the Monet garden tour and village. Absolutely as we pictured. Bus drivers were friendly and informative. My father was the 13th man to jump over normandy beach during the D-Day invasion. This trip has a deep personal meaning to me and my family. The history, monuments, museums were all deeply moving to our family. Both my brother and our wives enjoyed a spectacular historical walk back in time that made this a very special event in our lives. In addition to the travel and historical experience, I must say that the crew on board was nothing short of first rate. Beginning with the activity director to the dining executive, the wait staff and servers were in a class by themselves. While I probably would have rated this trip highly just on the locations and destinations, it was the quality and attention to detail of the cruising staff that took this trip into a 5 star range. Kudos to everyone associated with this trip - thanks for making this special in so very many ways. Read Less

The accommodations, we were in room 217, were larger than we expected. the food was gourmet every meal. much better than what we are used to here in the USA. the guided tours were all top notch and are included in the cruise. we took two optional tours and they were worth the money, especially the Palace of Versailles. the thing we enjoyed the most was the service and attention we received from the Viking staff. we stayed in Paris, (pre and post cruise extension) and had a fantastic time. stayed at the Hotel Ampere, a very good choice. the transportation to and from the hotel, ship and airport were on time and excellent. the service we received on board the ship was one of the best parts of the trip. our server, Hugo (From Portugal) was outstanding. we are going on another Viking cruise next year and cant wait.
