We were looking for a quiet, pretty cruise through the heart of the Burgundy wine country. We got that but we also got far more. The crew was extremely nice; every single individual was friendly, helpful, and cheerful. The "host", Charlie Pope, went out of his way to see that every single guest had a great time. But the thing which was not emphasized enough in the advertising was the quality of the foods and wines. If you are a foodie, this is the cruise for you. Every meal was an absolute delight. Interesting and (at times) creative dishes, nicely plated, and accompanied by great wines. Whites and reds with each lunch and dinner and a great percentage of the wines were either Grande Crus or 1er Crus and they never served the same wine twice. The chef did a fantastic job and can't be praised enough. The only disappointment was at the 3-star restaurant which was included in the tour, Lameloise. Lameloise is an unbelievable restaurant, better than any I have ever eaten in from the point of creativity, imaginative flavor combinations, great flavors, not to mention elegance and service. What was the problem then? It was the local Charlerois beef. The beef was tough enough that I had to saw my way through the meat. And when I was able to get some on the fork, it was tasteless. In the US it could never be called prime. I didn't expect wagyu but this was not worthy of even an average steakhouse. Fortunately, the other dishes made up for the beef so we still came away satisfied. The last point to mention was the cleanliness and beautiful presentation of the barge. Oh, and the French captain, Greg, was a delight to spend time with. Constantly joking and enjoying life, he could have been a host himself had Charlie not handled that job so well. The only thing we would have liked to have was a laundry service; bringing enough clothes for seven or more days and anticipating possible cold or hot weather, was a minor hassle. We can't recommend this tour enough. Read Less

This was my 5th cruise with Viking. Three wonderful meals a day, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, shore excursions, air and airport transfer all included, I don't think you can beat the price. The Kadin has an amazing staff. Our wait staff remembered every detail of my reds. The knew I loved the chef's eggs benedict and made sure it was ready for me each morning, even when it was not on the menu. This was my first solo trip and I was a little nervous, that is why I chose Viking. I knew I didn't have to worry about a thing. The tour director even gave the waiters in the lounge orders to dance with the single girls at our table. What great fun! I met many wonderful travelers on the voyage, as well as, on the Loire Valley extension. In March I have my first Viking Ocean voyage to the west Indies. We decided to try a different river cruise line. We had experienced Uniworld a few years ago. The food and selections were very good. The daily choices were very good. The trip to the D Day landing was a disappointment as far the time allotted to appreciated and experience the area. They provided a meal while we were at Normandy that took up too much of our time. The group that we were with all agreed. This was one of the highlights of this cruise. We also found that there was a lot of bus touring with driving time taking up a lot of time. The deluxe cabin was the perfect size. the full sized balcony was also nice. The servicing of the room and the butler service was terrific. The ports of call were good except the long rides some days. Embarkation and disembarkation was very organized and seamless. The entertainment was ok but we made our own entertainment with our group. The waiters were very good and made some great recommendations. They had a good selection of wine and liquor. The daily drink specials also very good. Primarily chose this cruise due to the itinerary and the visit to the Normandy beaches. Our first cruise with Scenic though have been on Avalon and Un-Cruise adventure river cruises. We were met at the airport and promptly taken to the ship with everything nicely handled. Took about an hour with Paris traffic to get to the ship but the van was comfortable. On the return, we were chauffeured personally with a Mercedes sedan which was wonderful and unexpected. Crew was amazing and were everywhere assisting in a myriad ways. No request was too much or a problem for them. Room service was prompt and tasty. You will see your Butler all over the place. Adam was ours and he was fantastic. Kudos to the management for superb training. By the way, this is an Australian cruise lines lots of Aussies, Brits, and Americans mostly in the 50-80 range. All inclusive so drinks were free and used top brands. Every day were new drink specials but the Margaritas were the best anywhere. Nice wines from all over France and as much as you wanted. No one abused the flow of alcohol as has been a problem with other lines. Valerie was the cruise director and she was excellent. The tour of the D-Day beaches consisted of a short visit to Arromanches D-Day museum at Juno beach followed by a long lunch and then a short visit to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery. This was far less than we wanted so Valerie arranged a private vehicle (extra $) to go to St Marie d'Eglise, the wonderful museum there, Utah beach, and then on to Omaha where we met the rest of the ship's tour. It worked out beautifully but would have been very disappointing since we did not come several thousand miles to just have a nice lunch. Unexpected was the wonderful little French fishing villages especially Honfleur and Les Andelys. Rest of the tours were well organized and very enjoyable. Everything ran like clockwork with absolutely no glitches of any kind. Couple of hour long bus rides but the buses were comfortable. Suggest using the TV's on the busses to amplify the historical information about the destinations. Monet's house and garden in Vrnon-Giverny were beautiful but made far less enjoyable because of the large crowds. Chantilly castle was beautiful and enjoyable too.Very much enjoyed shopping with the Chef in Paris. All meals (except for "L'Amour) served in the main dining room including the "Table Le Rive" which is a multi course extravaganza with each course paired with wines. L'Amour was served in a nice section of the ship forward and close to the bar and main lounge. L'Amour is a one time shot for all passengers and Table Le Rive offered only to Diamond Deck customers. Both were excellent.Generally meals were good but I have definitely had better steaks and fish.Spectacular service made up for any shortcomings. Not much in the way of entertainment except for an electronic organ player and a band that made an appearance one time. We did not come on this cruise for the big shows like on cruise lines so all was good. Similar entertainment on other river cruises that we have experienced. Buy some Euros before you go as ship will charge an additional 5% service charge. Electrical outlets are adequate but make sure you have adapters as they are the European plugs. Seriously considering the Bordeaux cruise next year on the same line. By the way, apparently the Aussies dislike tipping so it is all included in the price though I just had to reward a few of the crew since they were so great. Almost forgot, one free laundry service which made packing very easy. Can be used anytime during the cruise. Also free pressing. Read Less

I have always had Paris and Normandy on my list of places to visit and this cruise combined both of them into one trip. I learned from our first cruise on the Rhine that I wanted to do the pre-stay this time as well and I was not disappointed. The service on board ship was excellent once again and the hosts on the excursions were great as well. the included excursions were great and further enhanced by the optional ones that we signed up for. My Wife is eager to go on another one perhaps to Russia and I would like to do the Rhine again but continuing down to Budapest to see sites in Germany and Austria as well as Hungary. This trip for my Wife and I this year also marked our 35th Wedding Anniversary as well as my 60th Birthday. We will keep doing these as long as our health permits. Read Less

The only river cruise I could get my husband to agree to because it was going to Normandy. However, we both loved the whole trip! The cabin, the food, the crew were all outstanding! The views of the French countryside were so beautiful! It was such a delight to visit the small towns and villages along the Seine. Monet’s gardens were one of the many beautiful highlights! Each included tour at the different towns we docked at were led by very knowledgeable locals. The tour guides gave us the history of each of the French villages we visited as we walked along seeing the sites that the guides described. The ship itself was the perfect size, less than 200 passengers which made it easy to meet new friends and dinner mates. The food at each meal was so tasty and presented like a true first class restaurant. The service at meal time was amazing! The servers were very friendly and accommodating and their service was better than any we have had stateside and we’ve eaten at many restaurants! The cruise director was also amazing, he was so funny and delighted us with information about upcoming shore excursions as well as humorous comments about the daily happenings. Read Less

Wow, greeted with champagne, h, ow good is that. My advice to travelers is get to Paris a day early so you are not stressed by the travel. They pick you up at the Airport, they take your luggage, bring you to a staging place ( Hotel Pullman) and you wait several hours to take the bus to the meals were( for a cruise ship) bathroom. Real live orchids, a window wall that opens to a French Balcony. A very comfortable bed. We went to the lounge to here Caty our cruise director, tell us about the ship, the one time emergency drill and other features. Everybody loved Caty, everyday and evening she was there for our concerns and questions, thank you. We found out that we had 95 people cruising on the Tapestry II, not a lot when we have been on cruise ships with thousands. Our dining experience was fantastic, Gabriel our server made sure our wine glasses were full, take a drink and he would top it off. Thank you Gabriel for taking such good care of us. Just to mention, when we came on board the Matrei d asked if anyone had allergies, my wife is allergic to shell fish, informed him and at every meal he stopped by to see what she ordered. Caring and considering the welfare of the guests made us feel we made the right choice. Hard to be on a very personal cruise and not make new friends, we were grateful to the many new ones we made. The tours are many and fun, from the American cemetery at Normandy, Van Gogh, Monet, Paris and the many others we took, very interesting and knowledgeable guides. Would do it again. We spent three days in Paris before embarkation and we had a great time. We celebrated my wife's birthday with supper at the Eiffel tower and a boat cruise on the Seine River. My wife was interested in castles and we were able to visit six of them during our cruise. My father was a veteran of WWII who landed on D-Day and we visited the beaches of Normandy. We visited Monet's gardens on another shore excursion. The Ship was very nice and the crew was friendly, and helpful. We enjoyed meeting new people every night over delicious food and wine. The cabin had ample storage and the crew kept it spotless through the entire trip. This was our first cruise and we both had a wonderful trip thanks to viking and their great staff. I would highly recommend Viking they made sure every thing went smoothly from the time our plane landed until our return flight. Read Less

We wanted to experience a more intimate, friendly cruise experience. We have grown tired of the big, mega ships with thousands of passengers. The meals were of top quality and a highlight of each evening. The ship staff were always polite and willing to help with any question s we had. The excursions were right on. They were long enough so we could enjoy the locale that we were visiting and still gave us time to unwind before dinner on the ship. In general, everything went well. All the events and excursions were well planned and went off without a hitch. GREAT TRIP. We enjoyed the experience so much that we have already booked another river cruise for next summer. Both of our fathers served in Europe during the second world war and we wanted to partially retrace their footsteps throughout France and Germany. Again a very good trip. Worth every penney. We did the Viking Rhine cruise last year and wanted to see Paris & the Normandy excursion seemed to fit our needs this year. As usual, our cabin was nice & they kept it that way as well as the whole ship. We found the staff extremely helpful & competent & all went out of their way to make us comfortable. The food was outstanding, the wines were good and the entertainment was very nice. Our shore excursions were just right and the guides were extremely knowledgeable & helpful. Our only complaint was the bed covering was a combination bed spread, sheet & blanket. It became too hot in the middle of the night, yet your only option was to throw if off & then it became too cool. A sheet would help, but at least have a light blanket in the closet that could be used to compensate for this poor design. Also, our tour guide to Versailles apparently lost his ticket and we were sidelined for about 30 minutes while he tried to telephone for a replacement. In the mean-time, about 3000 other people poured into the place while we just stayed out of their way. Other than that incident, he was quite competent. Read Less

Objective was to see Germany and picturesque river castes up close. Guides were very knowledgeable and understandable! We want to take another river cruise, maybe in England and Scotland, and to finish our German river cruise on other rivers. Very restful and relaxing. Would like to be able to see ahead in addition to seeing alongside. Would like a "captain's chair" or two in the room. Food and service was excellent with a great variety (but the food labels were too small). Port villages were small clean neat picturesque friendly and easy to walk around with no danger of getting lost or left behind, because the boat and river were so near. A simple map was provided each morning of the town we would be exploring that day. We took a picture of it each day to help us identify the locations of the pictures we took when we got home. Smaller passenger numbers made embarkation and debarkation easy simple and quick. It was also easy to recognize fellow passengers on shore for making acquaintances, sharing stories, and making sure you were among friends and in the right place. This was our 50th wedding anniversary, and the crew and captain made a special presentation of cake, champagne, music, and song at the front of the main window in the dining room! Very special surprise! Read Less

Always wanted to cruise the Rhine. We explored Paris on our own to get into the Louvre, Eiffel Tower and the Seine River Cruise as it was school holidays and didn't want to waste time doing the morning bus tour. These three events took most of the day waiting in line to get into the event, even with a pre-purchased ticket. After the rustle and bustle of Paris, we were glad to get on the boat and unpack for the next 11 days. We were able to choose extra trips so paid for the Luxemberg trip as an extra. Well worth it. Great service, good room -we had a sapphire deck room with glass sliding doors so well lit and relaxing to just watch the countryside go by in the afternoon. Morning excursions were great with gentle to faster walks provided. Although no irons in room to use. Had to send to laundry. So non crumple clothes a bonus. The dining was excellent with two to three choices each night on a four course dinner. The food for lunch was more like a meal. I would rather have something simple like being able to toast a sandwich or make an egg sandwich. So didn't lose weight on the trip. We are already planning which river trip to take with Avalon for our next trip. Read Less

We wanted to include Paris and a river cruise for our 50th wedding anniversary. Avalon gave us a great deal on the air fare. I don't think we needed the travel insurance because our credit card would have covered most of it. Except for the struggle to get through the Paris airport, everything was fabulous. In Paris we took a bus tour, a walking tour, and walked around a bit. The Eiffel Tower was fun, but we didn't have enough time to enjoy the Louvre. The ship, the cabin, the dining, the entertainment, and the service was first class. The local guides made each stop at each river town so very meaningful. We enjoyed meeting the other passengers, especially in the evening with music and dancing. The director and his staff did a great job. The cruise down the Moselle and Rhine rivers was very relaxing. We visited beautiful churches and quaint villages. We saw many castles and vineyards. We especially enjoyed the visit to the Cologne Cathedral and the Windmill Village in Holland. We applaud Avalon and highly recommend this trip. Read Less

I've never had such delicious food. We were so enthralled by the landscape and one of my favorite pastimes was sitting on the observation deck and looking at the beautiful scenery. Also, the special service with the park staff that was held for our tour was a deep and meaningful time. The German bunkers and gun emplacements were not expected a a nice surprise. Paris was also a wonderful city. We really enjoy the smaller towns more than the large cities but Paris was very nice. We enjoyed the Eiffel Tower by day and by night. The Arch de Triumph was as beautiful as expected. On board the Modi, the crew interacted with the passengers daily. We really enjoyed the daily briefings and the Chef's daily recommendations. This is my first Tauck trip and it did not disappoint in terms of service and the overall quality of what was offered. I did the 14 day Seine river cruise trip from Paris to London in July 2017. In practice this is only 9 days on the river boat and 5 days in hotels in Paris and London. The Tauck tour directors were helpful and friendly and I could not fault them. The whole trip was well organised and any glitches quickly dealt with. There were a number of 'small surprises' along the way which were appreciated and made you feel like you were valued and getting a high quality product - arguably you have already paid for these additional extras as part of the fare, however if you are looking for a trip experience which is above the essentials Tauck delivers. Scylla who own and operate the river boats offered an equally great product. Staff were professional and friendly - as good as I have experienced anywhere. Food quality and variety was much better than I expected and the wines were of a good standard. My main complaint about dinner service is that it is very rushed - given there is very limited entertainment on the river cruise, dinner should be made in to more of an event. What is the rush? The ship has recently been refitted and therefore it was fresh and modern. As mentioned this is a 14 day 'cruise' but only 9 nights on board the ship. The other nights are spent in hotels in Versailles and London. Accommodation in London was at the Savoy and I am pleased to have experienced this lovely hotel. The Waldorf in Versailles was ok but nothing to rave about. I would have much preferred to spend the full 14 days on ship. The packing up and moving involved in shifting really broke up the holiday (I was not the only person who felt this). The Seine is a short river, however there is much to see and I would have preferred a less frenetic pace of the land tours (see comments below). It is not that I am infirm - I just like to balance on board relaxing with touring. 14 days with the same land experiences spread out would have been much better. I am experienced ocean cruiser and this was my first river cruise. To compare the two products: - I travel on five star all inclusive ocean cruises and the service and staff were equivalent. I took a basic suite (ie: port hole only) and this room size was fine for me as a single person. I would not recommend it for two people (although a number of people did share on my trip). The room is very small and closet space is limited. - Entertainment on the river cruise was, as expected, very basic and 'touristy'. I really missed entertainment at night which is a big part of the enjoyment for me on an ocean cruise. This will impact on my personal decision as to whether to take another river cruise. If however you are happy to go to bed early and don't value night time entertainment then this would not be an issue for you. There was a pianist who was very good. I would have liked a more contemporary suite of music - just because I am in my 50s doesn't mean I only want to hear stuff written over 20 years ago. - The absence of rough seas is a real advantage on a river cruise especially if you get sea sick. There is always something to look at as you pass along the banks and this is pleasant - There is a lot more emphasis on 'off ship' activities on the river cruise. While you are able to stay on board with no issues, I found the level of activity which kept you off ship a bit excessive. I like to spend half a day on shore and half a day relaxing on ship which is very achievable on ocean cruises. Given the on shore program (which I wanted to do) there was only limited opportunity for on ship relaxation and I would have liked a greater balance. Overall - I was not disappointed in the Tauck product. They lived up to their reputation. The extra you pay is worth it. The newly refurbished ship is lovely and it is very relaxing and easy to get around. Read Less

We had never done a river cruise and Viking had a good rating and reviews. Our only real complaint is that Viking booked our flight with Delta - DFW to Atlanta to Paris. Our experience in the Atlanta airport was horrendous. We had an 18 hour layover because Delta couldn't seem to get a plane in to Atlanta that was not in need of repair. We were totally exhausted when we reached Paris. We booked a three day pre-cruise in Paris and missed the first day completely. Our experience on the ship was wonderful. We had never cruised on a small ship and the cozy experience was wonderful. We were able to meet a lot of nice people and could choose our table for dining and sit with different people at each meal. This made the trip more interesting. The excursion to Omaha Beach was the highlight of the trip and very moving since my dad had been there during the war. We look forward to another river cruise. Way out of the city/ cost a fortune by taxi. The same getting back into Paris at the end of the cruise. When it is that far out Viking should provide transportation for those of us who did not buy their air package. Also the only entertainment was a piano player and there was no gym on board. But all in all it was a pleasant experience and we would consider another Viking River Cruise. We expecially loved Giverny and the American cemetery at Normandy. We decided to take a Viking River Cruise just because it looked like a good thing to try for our first trip abroad. And we were not disappointed! Starting with our flight. We chose the round trip air option from Viking on Air France, great airline. We were met on our arrival in Paris by Viking representatives and taken by motor coach to our ship The Viking Rinda, the ship was just beautiful. We were greeted graciously and checked in, then explored the ship a little and by the time we got to our very nicely appointed Veranda (B) cabin on the main deck our luggage was already there. Dining aboard the ship was an delightful experience. We looked forward to every meal on board ship. The entertainment and activities provided on board made us feel included with all that was going on. Our ports were very convenient and shore excursions were both beautiful and educational. Now about the crew... From the Captain to the deck hands, What a ride, smooth and comfortable. From The Head Chef to the waiters, food and drink we could not have enjoyed more. We were a party of eight traveling with our family and friends. Our special pleasure was traveling with our eighteen and fourteen-year-old granddaughters that made our trip so wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the beauty of Paris and how wonderfully we were treated by the French people. The excursions to the towns and beaches of Normandy were so moving, we really appreciated what our soldiers as well as the allies did to stop Hitler's tyranny in Europe. Our visit to Giverny and Monet's Garden was much more than we ever expected, living pictures of what we have seen on his canvas. The ship was beautiful, the crew could not be more accommodating, especially the husband and wife team who were the Executive Chef and Maîtres d'. We wanted to see Normandy beaches, Monet's home and gardens plus medieval cities, castles and European river homes. Shore excursions were fantastic with interesting history info, war places, explanation of how medieval homes were built, viewing of castles on hllls, how they were built, etc. We were NOT taken to jewelry or other shops to buy anything but were given free time to do so if desired which was a definite plus from other ocean ship excursions. This was our first river cruise due to the higher price than ocean cruises so we were expecting great service, food and excursions. Viking delivered every day of the 8 day cruise on all 3 with excellent variety of food, ample portions, seconds if desired at dinner, 2 entrees or desserts available if wanted to try different foods and couldn't make a decision on which to choose! Viking's Staff were tremendously friendly, courteous, helpful and professional but also personable. They even danced the "Achy, Breaky Heart" song with cowboy hats so this was hilarious since we are from Dallas, TX, and everyone enjoyed the comraderie of the crew. The Hotel Rochester was just 2 blocks from the Champs Elysee and very chose to a Metro entrance. The guides were fantastic, both during the cruise and during the stay over.. As this was my third Viking River Cruise, I knew I would be treated like a king. The ship and Cabin were always clean and comfortable. The service was immediate and always friendly. As I expected from previous Viking Cruises, the food was spectacular. The variety of choices at each meal guarantees one will find something to suite one's taste. The wine selection at each meal was quite appropriate. I am looking forward to my next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

Our cruise on Joie de Vivre originating in Paris was truly superb!! From the omlet chef at breakfast to the head matre de in the dining room truly a white glove service experience. We were celebrating my sister's 60th b'day and had a wonderful time. The itinerary may seem somewhat boring, but we had an excursion guide, Barbara ,that made for a memorable and interesting time in both the gardens of Monet and the beaches of Normandy. The other stops on the itinaray are Ruen, Place of Versailais and Honfleur all make for interesting excursions. The service on board the ship is 1st class. Anna the bartender had special drinks ready for us after a long day of site seeing . Sevin the head matre de had a special b'day cake ready for our b'day celebration. The omlet chef at breakfast had my special omlet delivered to my table everyday. The bartender in the rear of the ship had my special Normandy brandy ready for me every night for my night cap. We ate at the Bistro on board ship one night and a couple of lunches. Food on board the ship in both the dining room and Bistro is excellent. I would definitely recommend Uniworld and Joie de Vivre ( a brand new ship) for seeing Paris and its stops along the Seine. Read Less

My sister and I wanted to see some of the sights our father had seen in Paris during WWII. He always had wonderful memories and now we will as well. As our 2nd river cruise, the amenities, dining, and staff were as wonderful as the first trip. We chose a room without a balcony, however, and found less drawers available for our clothes. Shelves in the closet had to accommodate us instead. The shore excursions which we purchased were excellent with our wonderful guide, Edith on three of them. We loved the Taste of Paris and the Opera Garnier plus Galleries Lafayette Department store; the view from the roof of Paris was amazing! One disappointment was the long bus ride to Normandy beaches. However, our wonderful guide gave us a fantastic European history lesson leading us up to the Normandy Invasion. The bus ride was not clearly stated in any of the information about the trip. One wonderful feature was the day in Les Andelys, a lovely little town along the Seine. This was the only small town, however. The Rouen Countryside tour was interesting especially because of our wonderful guide who, as a transplant from England, chatted about the big changes her family had gone through in their move to France! The 17th century farm buildings and its charming owner gave us a wonderful tour of the organic apple farm with sheep dog demonstration as they herded the sheep. We did a lot of homework, pre-trip for our extension in Paris. Learn to use the Metro; it's easy and helps you get around so much faster. Be prepared for lots of traffic and sirens.
