Started in Paris and stops along the way to Normandy and at the end, a transfer to the train for the chunnel to London. The ship was a new ship and we thoroughly enjoyed the window setup and the ship itself with one exception. In many ports, you have to go through another ship to get to your port. I understand that this is normal and unavoidable (I guess). However, we had to go up and down and over to get through the other ship. The stairs were metal and many times, damp. I was told by a member of the staff that this was a flaw of the new ship. Most ships, and we experienced this on another river cruise, you are able to walk directly through one ship to another without all of the stairs. The food was just OK at best. No where near the amount and quality of the big cruise ships. It was difficult to obtain an extra portion or go astray from the menu. At least I was able to do this on Grand Circle. Service was great! Read Less

We loved the itinerary because we got to see Normandy beach, Monet's Garden and Versailles all in one 8 night river cruise. The ship was spotless; the food was excellent. This was our second river cruise and it will not be our last. Our cruise director, Ken, was fabulous. Our cabin steward was wonderful, too. Each day we took a tour with Viking and used the head phones in our room that we charged every night. The only downside was that the ship was technically not docked in Paris but about a half hour drive away with no view of the city. Plus, there wasn't much cruising because we didn't go very far up the Seine. Our first river cruise with Viking was 15 nights from Amsterdam to Budapest and an add on excursion to Prague; if you are looking for more cruising time, that is the cruise to take! Read Less

The crew went out of their way to make you comfortable. Being able to unpack and not have to do it each day was a real blessing. The lounge areas were most comfortable. Our tour director was the best I've ever had. I'm ready to do it again! There was never a hitch in loading or unloading when transferring between the bus and ship. Viking had personnel available at each step of the way from the airport. It was the same with leaving. Getting the airport transfers was one of the best things we did. We got the least expensive state room and it was more than adequate. We spent the bulk of our time on the lounge and observation deck. The were always good refreshments available. Read Less

This review is way overdue but I really wanted to let travelers considering a river cruise line,to know the great level of professionalism and care they will encounter with AMA. Elia, the cruise director, went above and beyond to help my sister when she faced a medical emergency at midnight in France and not speaking the language. The rest of the crew were so helpful getting her around and bringing her meals to the cabin(thanks Juliann). The ship is very clean at all times and rooms ,bathrooms and common areas are comfortable for the limitations a river cruise represents. The food is also very good and the selection varied. The lamb served on one of the nights has been one of the best ever! Our only complaint is that they should have a better quality wine list for those interested. We have been on another river cruise line and they also have the same situation. The entertainment is limited, but again remember "river cruise"but the musician played all kinds of music and was so nice with requests. Our fellow passengers were friendly and open for a good time ( the dance floor was full most of the time). The guest musicians were also great. Excursions were well planned and the guides were excellent.Normandy beaches and the American cemetery were even more moving than what I was prepared for.I would have loved more time in Honfleur. For me ,Cleanliness, Excellent service and Food are our parameters and AMA filled each one of them.Going back next year, new route! Read Less

Quality of service, tours and boat. We have traveled with Viking before and chose to go again. We had exceptional food, were offered shorter walking tours and activities as well. The boat has lots of space and we like the moving round from table to table for meals to meet more people. The side trip to Normandy Beach was especially important as my father had landed in the same area during WWII. There was additional time at port in Paris in which we were able to connect with our German daughter (exchange student) and walk the streets of Paris. We are not shoppers who need additional items but did enjoy seeing outdoor markets, small villages and places for lunch or a drink. The staff was well organized and the processes for getting on/off the board were smooth. We had added the option of airport pick-up and delivery which went well. We have marked off one of our bucket list items with the Monet garden tour and village. Absolutely as we pictured. Bus drivers were friendly and informative. It should be emphasized that personnel in wheel chairs and walkers will have very difficult time. Read Less

Not only were the other passengers most interesting, but the crew were a delight and most important, efficient and helpful. The food was varied and very good, with two places to eat which had slightly different menu styles. I had forgotten how beautiful Paris is and the tours we had showed this beauty off to the full. All our destinations on the cruise were chosen carefully and the transit and guides could not be faulted. I particularly wanted to visit Monet's home and garden and I was not disappointed. Even with the number of other visitors there it was not too bad. We will definitely take another river cruise and possibly one at sea sometime. This was an excellent introduction to get us the holiday path to cruising. Thank you Viking. Read Less

We have tried ocean cruises in the past and wanted to try a River Cruise. When we learned there were only 180 passengers on the Viking River ships compared to the ocean liners with thousands of passengers we were hooked. By having fewer guests, the staff was able to be extra attentive to each guest. When we arrived in Paris we were greeted by Vikings Representatives and taken directly to the Rolf. It is a great ship. Our room was amazing. The food we were served at each meal was like dining in a five star restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed all of the planned excursions as well as the extra ones we chose. We met many other couples who felt the same as we did. This was our second Viking River Cruise. Last year we did the Rhine Getaway and it was wonderful. We chose this river cruise because it had something of particular interest to each of us - Giverny for me (Monet is my favorite) and Normandy for my historian husband. We arrived a few days ahead and toured Paris, included was a wonderful guided tour of a historic district. Viking handled everything so smoothly, all transfers - plane to hotel to ship to airport - making it all very easy. The ship was perfect, our cabin with a veranda very comfortable, the staff helpful and cheerful (the bartenders remembered what we wanted to drink...), the food delicious. Every port included a walking tour of the area with knowledgeable local guides; several other tours were included to Giverny, Normandy and others, with optional other tours for purchase. Each evening there was entertainment, lectures and demonstrations to further understanding of the area. The ship was smaller than an ocean ship and seemed very cozy and populated with such nice people. We came away with new friends with whom we continue to stay in touch. Undecided? Try it, you'll like it!! Read Less

to see Paris and Normandy. Cruise was done well in all aspects except there wasn't much cruising. We spent lots of time in LePecq, a suburb of Paris so the excitement of Paris nite life wasn't anywhere around. We were notified of this change well after we booked. We spent 3 days prior to embarkation at the Hotel Rochester in Paris and it was delightful. The trip to Normandy was especially touching and I will be forever glad for this moment. The staff were excellent and quite professional. The food was a little above average, surprising i thought as the reviews we read raved about it. I became sick on the first day aboard and the Cruise Director, Lionel, went well above and beyond duty to connect me with a local doctor and help get the necessary medications. Because of his help the trip went off smoothly. I would gladly sail with Viking again. Read Less

This was the second time on the Paris to Normandy to Paris cruise. This was my 3rd trip with Viking. Viking continues to improve as the years go by. We were docked in Le Pecq which was an adorable suburb of Paris. I loved the excursion offered by Viking to St. Germain -en-Laye. It was beautiful and gave me a view of Le Pecq and the surrounding area. Having taken this tour before it was a welcome additional tour. I was so happy with being able to do Paris on my own and also knowing where I had to be to be picked up in the p.m. Giverny was so beautiful with tulips everywhere. I loved the house with the brightly colored rooms! This time I spent some time in town with fun shopping and a delicious creme brulee' at one of the many adorable cafes. On the way back to the bus, it started to rain which turned into...SNOW!! A beautiful ending to a wonderful excursion. Rouen was fascinating. The first two or three blocks away from the river, were of newer construction having been bombed during the war, were such a contrast to the older Rouen. The tour was interesting, but again, I was able to take some of Rouen that was new to me as I went off on my own, knowing where the Rolf was docked. I love the aspect of Viking tours! My favorite tour was the visit to Arromanches Les Bain, and the American Cemetery in area of Normandy. Arromanches is one of my favorite places in the world. The ocean is so gorgeous, it makes it difficult to think about June 6th. I love the town and the cafe that served up a very French lunch. It was even better this year. The visit to the American Cemetery always brings tears to my eyes when the American National Anthem is played. Plus I loved the fact that Viking had a small appreciation ceremony for past Vets. There were quite a few on our trip. When we docked in Les Andelys, I had already seen the castle, so I led a small cadre of women shopping in the wonderful little boutiques in town. My best memory is sitting outside at a little cafe, sipping an apple liquor, and seeing at least 6 red Viking umbrellas being held by the husbands of all the wives that were shopping in the little boutique on the corner. Then, we had a great conversation with a Frenchman whose daughter was going to school in California and wanted to show us pictures of her on his phone. It started to rain as we all ran inside the little cafe, just in time when the hail poured down!! It was once again, a great ending to a perfect day. The last tour to Napoleon's Malmaison was so fascinating. A great new tour Viking, thanks. The crew was like a family. When they would gather us together in the lounge every evening to tell us about dinner and the wine plus the next day's adventure, they had a little routine that was just adorable. It didn't hurt that the captain and several of the others, were lovely to look at!! I also thought the little cocktail hour for returning travelers was lovely with so many cocktails to try. We ended our tour with a three day extension in Paris at the Hotel Ampere. The Viking tour guide was very nice and very helpful during our stay. All in all, the best trip yet. In 2017 I am taking Viking's ocean cruise called Empires of the Mediterranean. Can't wait!! Read Less

This was our first River Cruise. We were pleased by the two for one specials and the great air fares offered by Viking. We have been on one ocean cruise, and we loved this river cruise so much more. The whole Viking experience was far above our expectations. We sailed on the Viking Vidar from Trier to Basel. The ship is as beautiful as the pictures and videos. The crew was fabulous! We loved the size of the ship and the towns that we visited, the tours and excursions were excellent. All the guides were so knowledgeable. So much more info and history than my brain could hold!! Our stateroom was lovely- the bathroom above expectations. The whole staff bend over backwards to help you. The meals on board were fabulous! We ate one meal off the ship, and it did not compare to anything we had on board. Our program director was wonderful. Full of energy and enthusiasm for every outing. The wait staff in the restaurant were simply the best- great personalities, made each meal a fun adventure!! I especially loved the time on the ship sailing up the Middle Rhine- such a perfect, beautiful day. Our trip started with two days in Paris, at a 5 star hotel in the heart of Paris. Our cruise director was in the lobby to help with any details/ questions. I was very impressed with our motor coach trips. The buses are first class, and always a guide on board giving interesting info about the towns and countryside. We extended our trip in Lucerne. Again, Viking provided excellent motor coaches, hotel in a great location in the heart of the city and a walking tour. The extension was well worth the price. Viking took care of us all the way to security check in at our departure in Zurich. My husband and I felt that the whole Viking experience was far beyond our expectations, and we hope to travel with Viking again and again. Read Less

This was our third Viking River Cruise. We went on this cruise as we wished to visit Paris and the Normandy Beaches. When we booked this cruise over a year before we sailed we believed the ship would be moored close to the centre of Paris. Unfortunately before we sailed we were informed that the port authorities had moved the mooring position to Le Pecq some 11 miles from the centre of Paris. This meant that there was around a 45 minutes to one hour bus ride to the centre of Paris. Instead of the short walk we were hoping for. This was the only disappointing aspect of this cruise. Other than this the cruise was excellent. The ship and our cabin was spotlessly cleansed comfortable, the staff friendly and very attentive, nothing was too much trouble for them. The meals were excellent always well prepared and plenty of choice. There was always plenty of wine and other drinks served with the meals. The shore excursions were excellent and gave a good insight into French history, culture and the Second World War. They all ran to time and were excellently organised. The ships onboard musician was Peter was excellent and entertained us at lunch time and during the evening. There were various lectures on board but I cannot comment on these as I did not attend these. The daily briefings kept us well informed of the next day's activities. Transfers to the ship embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. There were no children on the ship which was a great bonus. I will certainly take another Viking River Cruise. Read Less

We spotted an exceptionally good price on a 6 day, 5 night cruise from Paris to the English Channel and jumped as fast as we could. The cruise was a charter by Legendary Journeys and, with the exception of initial problems in receiving information because of a computer issue, the trip was a real joy and we regret not also taking the "return trip" to Paris The Scenic Gem is a new design for cabins. Comments are below. Our desire on the trip was to relax and enjoy walking around small French towns at a comfortable rate, The trip worked perfectly for that and we were able to enjoy the company of good friends we met on the trip. The food was very good and the Chef was available for special requests. We totally enjoyed the dining experience from Breakfast to late night snacks. The entertainment was limited to a single musician playing the piano and guitar, as well as singing. Sounds concerning, but this guy was both experienced and talented and worked the room with skill. Service was excellent. Benjamin was the Legendary Cruise Director and spent a lot of time helping us contact embassy (my wife's purse with passport and green card were stolen in Paris before the cruise) and we really appreciated his efforts. All other staff were very friendly and worked hard to ensure you enjoyed your cruise. I was impressed to the point that I want to take the same ship next year? Visits to towns along the river ere a joy to stroll around and we would enjoy visiting each one again so I would rate them 5 Stars. My husband and I chose a Viking cruise because it combined Paris and Normandy. We travel internationally at least once a year and have taken many cruises. Through Viking, we arrived three days early for an optional, pre-cruise stay. Although we stayed in a suburban hotel 30 minutes Metro travel time from the heart of Paris, it was a quiet, clean hotel close to Metro, train, and excellent restaurants. Viking has a desk at the hotel to answer any questions and to help guests plan optional outings on the optional days before and after the cruise. The Viking ship was only three weeks old. The staff was attentive and enthusiastic; the excursions were outstanding with excellent guides who spoke flawless English. The average age of the passenger was 60+, and most guests were seasoned, international travelers. There were two families on board with well behaved teenagers. Our only criticism is in reference to the cabin, where there are under cabinet lights shining 24 hours a day in the bathroom; we managed to cover them fairly well with a towel. I would suggest that travelers sensitive to light bring eye masks. One of the best parts of the cruise was embarkation and disembarkation. A Viking representative met us at the airport and quickly, efficiently took us to our hotel. On the day of our departure, our flight did not leave until four pm. We were allowed to stay on the ship for both breakfast and lunch. A van took departing guests to the airport, where a Viking representative guided us through the baggage check-in process and did not leave us until we were in the actual line to check in ourselves. On many other cruises, the included, round-trip air trip ended up with air connections too close together in time, our running from terminal to terminal, and then no assigned seats with our having to beg for seats together on the particular air trip. Viking leaves the traveler with wonderful memories. Read Less

The food aboard the ship was extremely tasty; the housekeeping service was unsurpassed, and the services of the concierge, the social director, the entire crew, and the captain himself were above and beyond what I had expected. The excursions were informative and educational without ever being boring. Exploration of Paris after the cruise was fun and worth the extra fees. Embarcation and disembarkation were very facilitating. I loved the small ship and camaraderie of the crew with the passengers. Our every need was attended to. The smallest details were unexpected: providing umbrellas when rain was forecast, serving hot chocolate when we returned from a shore excursion on a cold day, providing cold cider on a hot day, giving us ample free time. We chose this cruise line because it was so highly recommended by friends and family. We selected this particular cruise because it took us to the most cities/regions we wanted to see within the time frame we had available. We added on the two night package at our departure city, Paris, and it turned out to be the best possible choice we could have made along with our choices in optional excursions. The additional time in Paris helped us acclimate to the time change and allowed us to see some desired points of interest that we would have otherwise missed after traveling so far - Chartres Cathedral, Fontainebleau, San Chapelle - at our own pace. We were amazed at how most things seemed to work so smoothly. We easily connected with our driver at the airport who took us to our hotel; we were welcomed by the Viking concierge and had our questions answered. One minor inconvenience was that our departure from the hotel en route to our ship was held up for almost two hours. We were left standing and waiting and never heard any explanation. The locations that we visited while on this cruise, along with the excursions were outstanding. The quality of tour guides at each stop was exceptional with each one seemingly better than the last. They all were informative, very understandable, and often interjected a personal anecdote that uniquely enhanced our experience. In our very short tour of Luxembourg, because our guide was so gifted, we came away with a solid understanding of this small country that could have been lost amid the hectic pace of our travels. He provided an excellent window into who the people are as well as a bit of history that we would have never obtained any other way. With so much happening each day, we found that we increasingly relied on the Daily Viking News left in our stateroom each evening. It succinctly laid out the schedule for the next day, with times and expectations so we did not miss a thing! It also gave tidbits of information, history or a bit of a story about the area to which we were to travel the next day. Two of our most favorite tours were optional excursions and were so fantastic that they more than offset the additional charge. One, was the ten hour bus tour into the Alps out of Basel, Switzerland. Had we not added this, we would have been in Switzerland without ever seeing any of the iconic mountains about which we had heard so much. We were fortunate that the weather was perfect for this excursion and are so grateful to have this personal memory of this country. The second tour that was tied for first place with the alpine excursion was the walking food and wine tour in Strasbourg, France. We were in a small group of twelve and had a marvelous experience together exploring and tasting the offerings of small shops we never would have found on our own - a definite highlight for us! The ship was beautiful, the cabin very comfortable, and every detail well thought out and planned for efficient, maximum comfort. We opted for a veranda room on the top floor. It was definitely worth the extra cost for us as it gave us the best possible views along the river during the times that we chose to enjoy some private time. Everything worked so well, from the phone charging stations to the showers. We found that we enjoyed having the television turned to the GPS map where we could see where we were and where we were headed anytime we chose. One idea that might have increased our enjoyment would have been the option for a live video camera near the wheelhouse, so we could see in our room what the captain saw and even be directed to sights we may have missed. A DVD of this may have been something we would have purchased. The food was excellent - beautifully presented, and very tasteful on so many levels, a highlight each day. I am not much of a morning person and we quickly discovered the small, quiet breakfast option at the rear of the ship. Each morning we had a quiet and simple but adequate meal which we felt was a wonderful way to begin each day. We did enjoy the more vibrant atmosphere in the main dining room each evening for dinner! And we met people who did the reverse - a larger experience for breakfast and a quieter evening meal. It was great to have those choices. We enjoyed the Rudescheim Coffee demonstration given on board one afternoon. After returning home, we invited friends to view our pictures of the trip. Including this authentic beverage was a fun way to express the fun and variety we had enjoyed on our travels. The staff on board our ship was warm, friendly, efficient yet fun, and very good at their vocation. It helped give the sense of "home away from home." This trip was a once in a lifetime trip for us, as we do not see our finances allowing such a trip again. It was worth every penny, however and, if we were able, we definitely would go on another. We will remember with great fondness so many aspects of this trip for many, many years. Read Less

This was a great choice. We have heard about the river cruises for years. Our experience could not have been better. There is not one aspect of this cruise that I would criticize. It was simply all we expected and we were not disappointed. The ports we stopped at were very educational and we enjoyed having free time. On board the staff tended to every need we may have. Very friendly and knowledgeable . Our stateroom was pristine, our housekeeper was delightful. The towels folded on the bed reading a book was such fun. Leaving the ship was easy to follow and very well organized, as we're the bus trips to the planned sites. The speakers on the bus were fascinating to listen to. They had all the answers to questions that were asked. Again, we could not have asked for a better experience with Viking. Hope to sail again. David and Karen Read Less

We wanted to celebrate our 25th anniversary in Paris but also wanted to see some of the countryside without renting a car, driving for hours and unpacking in a new lodging every night. This trip was perfect. As it was our first trip to Paris, we stayed an extra week in Paris proper, having already made the usual day trips to Versailles and Giverny from the cruise. The ship is beautiful but as ours was only it's second cruise, we did experience some "shaking down" issues with items in our stateroom. The crew couldn't have been more accommodating, however, so it was a minor inconvenience. The trip to the beaches of the Normandy invasion was far more impressive to us than we could have imagined. We enjoyed all of the excursions and we always take advantage of the optional ones as we have had wonderful discoveries with Viking's options. The food was good, the wine was too. WE met some great people among the other passengers. Some of whom we plan to see again; perhaps on another Viking cruise. Read Less

We were on the Cities of Light cruise, from Paris to Prague. Can't say enough about it! Perfect in every way. The food was spectacular, even with my gluten free diet. They went over and above making accommodations for me. And even when I got sick with a cold, they made sure I had honey lemon tea every day. They were extremely thoughtful. The excursions were top notch, too. Every day was filled with something fun to see and do. With the time change, I could have slept in and been very happy, but I know I got the most out of my cruise by getting out to all the excursions early in the morning. The staff were so happy and positive. I felt like royalty! The only negative was the wifi. It wasn't working the majority of the trip. I recommend buying a short-term cellular package that includes wifi. The weather could have been a bit more sunny, but it was still fabulous. What a relaxing way to travel. I love having the hotel move with me! The two nights in Paris and Prague were wonderful, too. The breakfasts were quite the feasts. But I do have to say that I felt a little gipped because of the flights in and out. Our flight out of Prague left at 6am so we had to leave the hotel at 3:30 am. That meant no second day and pretty much a sleepless night before. I recommend staying an extra day if you can. Read Less
