This was our second Scenic cruise. We did the Duoro river in Portugal last fall. We have also been on 3 Uniworld 1 Viking river cruise and an Avalon cruise. .This itinerary - Paris to Paris and the cruise length were ideal. As well, our previous experience with Viking was reason enough to go with them again. I had been cautioned by an acquaintance that the food on his Scenic cruise in Bordeaux earlier this year was not very good. I have to agree with that. At best the food was medioce. The best meal was the Rack of Lamb. All other meals were forgetable. On our last evening, we ate at the l’amour restaurant. Our table had the duck confit. The flavour was good, but the meat was extremely dry and tough. Everyone I spoke to (who had the duck) had the same comment. It was a good way to end the cruise. In general, the breakfast and lunch buffets were very good. The food was kept hot, was varied and tasty. In all cases the desserts were excellant. The staff on board were extremely efficient and very friendly. Our cabin was made up promptly. Special kudos to Sophia, Daniel, and the rest of the wait-staff. As well, Benjamin was an excellant cruise director. Read Less

We’ve never been to Paris and we wanted to experience the beaches at Normandy. We are so happy we chose this trip! We met wonderful people and saw places we’ve always dreamed about. We especially loved Giverny, Rouen and Normandy. Our trip to The Louvre was outstanding! All our guides were so knowledgeable. For us, it was a fabulous anniversary trip. We were tremendously grateful for our experiences onboard as well. Service, helpfulness and friendliness made each day a joy. Also our cabin was comfortable and so spacious! We also loved our heated floors. We are already planning our next trip! We had heard so much about Viking. Nothing was overstated. The food was amazing! Each day we were more delighted than the day before! The menus had so many choices. My husband I would order different items so we could sample more things. Onboard concerts of opera singers and lectures about Impressionism after we visited Giverny enhanced our trip greatly. We enjoyed every minute of our Viking cruise. We have described it to all our friends and family as the trip of a lifetime. I also kept a daily journal of our activities. I’m so glad I did! It allows me to relive our days together in France. Based on our Travel Coordinator's advice we selected the Scenic Luxury Cruises for our first cruise. The entire crew was superb. They were very attentive to our requests. As an example, while on shore I asked our Cruise Director, Cathy, if she could point me to a pharmacy to purchase some throat lozenges. She said she would take care of it and when the group got together a little later, Cathy had purchased them and did not make a big deal out of it. River cruising will always be impacted by the amount of water in the river. The Rhine River was sufficiently low that we had to disembark the Ruby and take a more shallow day cruise through the Rhine River gorges. While the guests were on the day cruiser, the crew disembarked our luggage and drove to the other end of the gorges where the Crystal was waiting when we arrived. Scenic and their crews did an excellent job of keeping the passengers informed and then doing the ship switch professionally. By the way, the unplanned day cruise ship was filled with tourists and locals and ended up being a pleasant experience. The on shore tours and events were excellent. In addition to the crew, we enjoyed meeting fellow passengers and sharing stories. In summary, Scenic was a great experience. Read Less

My wife had never been to France even though we’ve travelled on six continents. So we planned this week on the Rhône to be followed by a week on the Seine, and then a week in an apartment in Paris. We arrived in Avignon a day early and stayed near the dock. In the morning I walked to 5he ship and was pleasantly surprised that our room was ready. The Viking employee that helped us with our luggage was one of our waiters from the Grang European Viking cruise we had taken two years before. Surprisingly, he remembered us! As usual, the tours were well organized and interesting. We didn’t do any of the optional tours but since our ship was well located, we were able to entertain ourselves in the towns we visited. The ship was well maintained. No nicks or scuffs or other signs of wear. The food was outstanding. I also thought the evening entertainment was good, but the tv coverage wasn’t up to the standard of our previous trips with Viking. If you’re interested in France, I’d recommend this trip with Viking. Read Less

I have been researching river cruises for a while and Scenic were always high on the list. Essential to us was no children, as that was not the type of holiday required. I had an area in mind that I wanted to visit and found the Scenic itinerary that covered all these highlights. I did not look any further. The itinerary and reputation of the line were my main consideration. No extras to pay for along the way. The staff are amazing - "you wont hear no on this ship madame" says it all. Food also 5 stars - large variety and top quality. Everything always on time. The airport collection and after cruise transfers are a must. And did I say - the staff are amazing ! I would travel with Senic again without hesitation. Do your research on where you want to visit, and then let Scenic take care of the rest. Read Less

We chose this cruise primarily for the itinerary, especially Normandy and Paris. We frequently cruise on Celebrity, Princess and Carnival but wanted to try a river cruise. It will be our last river cruise. For one thing, our room was incredibly small, with no room to pass between the bed and the dresser area. And we are not large people. We discovered that French Veranda means no veranda. Only a sliding door. At booking, I was told it was the only room left. That was interesting because we met another couple at dinner who said they had just gotten the last remaining room a few days before sailing. Worse than the size was the very loud rattling of the light housing above the entrance area of the room when the engine was running. We have a sound machine but could not turn it up loud enough to cover the rattling sound which kept us awake if the ship was moving. We complained six or seven times to the front desk, first by phone and then in person. After getting no response, my wife recorded the rattling on her phone and took it down to the front desk. Several hours later, a service man appeared, agreed it was a bad rattle, and left. That was the extent of it. We had to live with it the rest of the cruise. To make matters worse, I had called Viking prior to our trip and simply asked if there was any discount on future cruises if we booked during the cruise like other cruise lines. The agent said there was not, but if I would book right then, I could contact him after we sailed and get a $200 pp discount as previous customer. So I signed us up for a China cruise and bought the trip insurance. Because of our bad experience, I called and cancelled the China trip, with the assurance that since we were more than 210 days out from that sailing, I would only have to pay $100 pp penalty. However, they said I will have to pay more than $1,200 penalty because I have to pay for the insurance. I did not authorize them to activate the insurance since I had more than 90 days to cancel. It appears they will now be paid twice for this room on this cruise while I, living on a fixed income, will be out more than $1,200. If I had not given in to the pressure to sign up before the cruise (I told the agent we wanted to see if we liked it before signing up for another) I would not be out more than $1,200!! I realize I can forward this amount to another Viking cruise, but considering our experience, I just want to be rid of them. The food was generally good, but limited selections and availability if you're used to large cruise liners. Excursions were mostly good and with only one exception, were included in the cost of the cruise. The program director, Mimi, was very good and a hard worker. The extent of the entertainment was very limited television in the room and a pianist in the lounge. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we have always wanted to visit Normandy and the American Cemetery to honor the fallen there. But it was so much more than that. We loved the size of the ship, and the service was great. All the tours were so well organized and interesting, the scenery was amazing and we had great weather. We have done nearly 20 Ocean cruises and have spent well over a year at sea. But this was our first River cruise. We chose Viking based on reviews, word of mouth, and ships with roomier cabins. We seldom had time to sit on the veranda because we were out and on the go, but it was nice to have it. A French Balcony would have worked fine as well. We also enjoyed having fewer passengers and getting to know many of them well. We will definitely plan another river cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise after comparing with other cruise lines. We specifically chose this itinerary and the inclusion of a special interest (culinary) was a delightful bonus. Everything could not have gone better. Our transfers, ship, cabin, crew, dining, entertainment, ports, shore excursions, all were above and beyond. As my Mom said, it's like being in a 5-star hotel on water! We greatly appreciated the quality of local excursions and guides. Everything was so well organized and our Cruise Director was top notch. The crew on on this ship (Avalon Tapestry II) are extra-special. The atmosphere is so welcoming and relaxing. Food and drink all excellent. Our cabin was spacious including the bathroom. The panoramic windows are beautiful. The ship is gorgeous, very modern and sleek. I can't really say enough about how fantastic our entire experience on this cruise was. We had not been on a river cruise before and were completely blown away by how wonderful it was. Thank you to everyone! Read Less

My husband and I have wanted to do a river cruise on the Danube for some time. When our travel agent suggested Scenic we hesitated at first because it wasn't on our list of companies. We had no reason to hesitate and would now highly recommend them . All inclusive means all inclusive at Scenic. From the time we arrived at the airport in Budapest to our departure from Prague 10 days later, we had assistance at every turn. Our luggage was looked after we had welcome drinks and snacks and introductions. The ship was meticulously clean and easy to get around. Staff were always in sight and available to request assistance if and when needed. On return from our excursions on the very hot days, we were greeted by staff with cool towels and a refreshing cool drink. The choices and presentation of food at lunch and dinners was outstanding. The head chef came around to our table nightly and was genuinely concerned about our impressions and passionate about his work. The excursions were well planned to introduce us to the culture of the venue. In Vienna we enjoyed a private concert by the Imperial Symphony Orchestra with guest visits by 2 opera singers and 2 ballet dancers performing, of course, the Blue Danube Waltz. On board the technology employed by the hand held Taylor made devices made even sitting back on the sun deck interesting and possible to enjoy everything in sight as the device gave us information at every site of interest we sailed by. I chose this cruise mostly as a surprise for my boyfriend, who is an artist and loves history, in particular military history. He had never been to France. I had lived in Paris and traveled there a couple of times since. But some of the places on the itinerary I had never been, too, either. It was our first river cruise and first time with Avalon. I have nothing negative to say. The whole experience from start to finish was amazing. We loved the ship, the cabin, the dining (food and wine), the shore excursions, and the service. Once on board, I was able to discuss my choice of Avalon with other passengers and it reaffirmed that I had made the right decision. We stayed one night in Paris prior to the cruise and Avalon provided the transportation from and back to the airport as well as to the ship from our hotel on the day of embarkation. I prearranged all the tours based on our interests at each port and paid for tips up front. Less to worry about. I was able to rearrange a couple of tours on board after additional details were provided. The last day was Paris, also, so we got in as much as we could in the city considering two days is not nearly enough time. All of the crew worked very hard to make our trip wonderful. They really seemed to love their jobs and it showed. Our cruise director was Jean-Loup. He was excellent - a fountain of knowledge and a whirlwind of activity and organization. Read Less

We also enjoyed the small group of people cruising with us and the ability to get to know people from all over the world. The entire cruise was just delightful. The staff was super and the Cruise Director awesome. The weather cooperated and we found the balance of rest and shore excursions to be just right. I enjoyed the variety of having early breakfast, snacks in the afternoon, a lovely sit-down dinner and being able to cruise during the daytime to see the countryside of France. The guides on the shore excursions were easy to understand, full of stories and loads of historical information. I enjoyed each one. The entertainment was delightful as well and the service from the food, to the cabin, to the captain, was outstanding. I couldn't have been more pleased with my choice of Avalon for my first river cruise and to be sure, I am looking forward to the next one. Read Less

I chose this as my first river cruise experience because of the dates, duration, itinerary and subject matter. This cruise highlighted the lives and work of various artists as well as the history of Normandy. Prior to embarking, I spent 2 weeks enjoying much of the highlights of Paris and wanted to explore more of the countryside of France. I don't care for ocean cruises because the crowds of people and the on-board entertainment and amenities are not for me. This river cruise, however, was delightful. I was able to find quiet, relaxing time and spaces, and I met very interesting people. The nightly entertainment was always enjoyable. Dining was always good with serving hours available for all schedules and the choices varied enough for all tastes. Embarkation was easy, I was greeted warmly and offered food and drink until my cabin was ready earlier than expected. The cruise director was fun, competent, efficient, helpful, accommodating and available. The rest of the crew and the captain were all helpful, cheerful and able. Disembarkation was also a breeze. The Cruise Director made sure every one had transportation to their various destinations and accommodated our late leaving time. My cabin was very comfortable in size, amenities, location and atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed lying in bed and watching the French country roll by through my floor-to-ceiling windows. I also enjoyed being able to walk off the ship and directly into the villages. The shore excursions offered alternatives depending on what I felt like doing on the day. They were well-organized and provided knowledgeable and sociable guides. I was well-briefed prior to the excursions so I knew where and when and what to expect. The only thing I missed was a swimming pool, but I'm not sure I would have found time to use it, even if it were there. There were no children among the guests on this cruise, and I doubt that children would have enjoyed it. I was traveling with my sister and brother-in-law, but I would have felt comfortable being solo on this cruise. I would definitely schedule another river cruise with Avalon. It was a most wonderful experience. Read Less

They are well maintained and provide all you need while cruising. We had great nights of sleep in the comfortable cabin. The excursions were terrific, and offered a variety of experiences for a first time visitor. Our family, of four, wanted to take a special trip to celebrate our high school senior's graduation. She chose France. As a senior citizen I wanted a relaxing tour, yet one which included the famous monuments, museums, and palaces. We found the perfect combination in the Paris-Normandy Viking River Cruise. We took the extended cruise and spent three days in Paris, visiting the special attractions in The City of Light. By chance we were there on Bastille Day and the day France won the World Cup! When we boarded the Rolf, we were delighted to find our ship and cabins to be just what we needed: immaculately clean, comfortable and with adequate storage space. We enjoyed eating in the lovely dining-room and on the more casual aquavit terrace It was fun to experience delicious new foods and delicacies while watching the shore roll by. We had cautioned our teen that she might be the only young person on the ship, but were amazed to find many of high school and college age on board. The activities and excursions were outstanding. I appreciated that while the younger members of the family could go on those that required more energy and endurance I could chose those that were easier or even remain on the ship with friends. Surprisingly, one of the excursions I enjoyed the most and will always remember was to the Monet Gardens. They were absolutely gorgeous. Normandy, Omaha Beach and the American Military Cemetery were very meaningful for each of us, but especially to me, since I was a child during WWII. The entire trip was definitely beyond expectations. I have been recommending Viking to all my friends. Our family would love to go on another river cruise and have even been discussing it. Read Less

We really enjoyed our first river cruise. The main reason we picked this cruise was the Normandy destination and history lectures. They were excellent. We are experienced Ocean Cruise people and frankly the river cruise is little too laid back for me. However, if we do another we would choose Avalon. Great service, excellent food and really nice people. We loved our Royal Suite but have no way to compare to other lines. Except for the lectures we found the little bit of entertainment that was provided just average. Also since there is no gambling there is not much to do when you return from excursions. The people at the reception desk were very helpful and although I need A wheelchair to go off the ship, they made that experience seamless. Our Cruise Director was very helpful and did a nice job keeping people informed of activities. We were a little disappointed that many activities started late but that was not an issue with most people. Overall we had a really great time. Read Less

For a very long time I have wanted to visit Monet's house and garden at Giverny and the visit was well worth the wait , even the the weather was unseasonably hot. Also had an unforgettable day at the Normandy beaches. The ceremonies there was so reverent and respectful to the heroes of that campaign who should never be forgotten. It was our first Viking cruise and it was nearly flawless from start to finish. It won't the last as Viking exceeded our expectations at every turn. The service level couldn't be better as the entire staff was accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable. We are very seasoned (50 years) travelers and both the tours and the guides were the best we have ever experienced. Every day was interesting and unique from the others. My wife has a medical issue that necessitates a rigid diet at all times. The maitre'd and his staff went above to ensure her needs were met while providing excellent meals all of the time. The reason for doing this cruise is that we wanted to explore Australia`s involvement during WW1 and WW2 plus see the French country side from the comfort of a luxury river cruise ship. The ship was generally very comfortable, excellent staff but failed in the quality of food supplied. The embarkment and disembarkment went smoothly and was well organised. One person in our party is a vegetarian and struggled to find adequate, nutritious vegetarian meals during the cruise. There was only one vegetarian meal listed on the menu each night whereas a non vegetarian had 3 choices on the mains plus the alternative section (which did not contain one vegetarian meal). Where the vegetarian meal was not appealing there was no offer to change or make up an alternate meal. It seemed we had to either like it or lump it. On one occasion the vegetarian received the same meal as the non vegetarian minus the meat. It was a plate with a few boiled vegetables on it and that was it. A very plain, tasteless meal with little thought or imagination. Generally the quality of meals was only average. The bakery was an exception with the breads and rolls being fresh and delicious. Scenic was notified in advance that one of our party was a vegetarian and on previous cruises with this company the chef spoke with the vegetarian and supplied nutritious, tasty meals. This did not occur on this cruise. Read Less

Having never been on a river cruise before, I was not keen but my girlfriend in Australia suggested we meet up in Paris and enjoy the cruise together as a reunion. I was concerned as it was expensive but encouraged by the way it was organised as all inclusive of trips, meals, drinks and entertainment plus the normal expected service on board. In addition I was given personal transport to the airport from home in an executive car and the use of an airport lounge to relax and have breakfast before the flight to Paris where I was taken to join the ship and meet my friend with her son. Everything worked like clockwork with no worries and friendly service throughout with the meeting on board of the staff and cruise director Valerie. Throughout the cruise all meals were excellent in quality, quantity and service with any drinks included at which ever lounge or restaurant of choice. The bar was virtually always open together with coffee machines and various teas being available always. Each evening we were given the itinerary for the following day and a port talk prior to dinner for information and interesting details. There was always a choice of tours, visits or relaxation together with bicycles avaialable for self or guided tours on land. A small gym on board, health and wellness advisor, hairdresser and shop with a desk where any advice needed was constantly available. All the trips I chose were excellent apart from one unfortunate one when the coach driver left a group of us at the wrong train station and there was incorrect information about our rendezvous time and place.. I had made alternative arrangements at the tourist office to get back to the ship by public transport on Sunday 22 July from Entretat but the guide suddenly found me twenty five minutes later waiting at the bus stop having realised that there was one passenger missing for the homeward journey Valerie was apologetic when I boarded but I was most disappointed by the experience which was not my fault in any way. However everything else was highly commendable and I would not hesitate to recommend the company or even go on another cruise again in the future. Read Less

The Rinda trip from Paris to Normandy was spectacular. I loved the port stops in Vernon/Giverny, Rouen and Les Andelys. The ship was gorgeous, the food was amazing and the crew were a delight. A couple of suggestions: 1. The “Silver Spirits” bar package was well worth the $300 per cabin. Not that we were barflies, but it entitles you to almost any wine off their wine list. The house wines included with lunch and dinner were fine, but they had some really great ones on the list. 2. Be aware that the ship docks in Le Pecq, a suburb, and not Paris proper. If you want to go into the city on embarkation day, you can get there for less than 5 euros on the RER train. The St Germain en Leye station on the A1 line is close and stops in the heart of the city is close but it is a steep climb The included tour to Giverny is a bit rushed, while you have more time than you need. You might want to consider getting a cab to stay longer. The crowd does tend to skew older, although we did have some intergenerational groups. I am happy to answer any questions. Read Less

I have been on many ocean cruises and I enjoyed the Amawaterways Christmas Market cruise so I expected about the same from the Viking Buri Rhone river cruise. I give the Buri's staff 5 STARS as well as all Viking tour guides, escorts etc. I paid for the transport from the airport to the hotel [I stayed a few days in Paris before the cruise] and it was money well spent! It was very easy to find the Viking Reps after clearing customs. All very very friendly and were very helpful. I celebrated a special birthday on the Viking Buri and they made it fun! BUT....the cruise was very overpriced. The breakfast buffet area was very tight. The food was fine for breakfast, but the portions were small. If you order pancakes or french toast you may want to order doubles. I got 2 siver dollar sized pancakes! I looked forward to meeting the Captain. All of the hors d'oeuvres were gone when it started and they did not replenish them. I guess repeat passengers knew to show up early. This is the ONLY cruise that I had to pay for my own cocktail at the captain's party. Later, they passed around champagne. Overall, the dinner food and wine selections and portions were very disappointing. On Amawaterways we enjoyed a different wine every night. On the Viking Buri, we had the same wine every night except one. $7.99 wine! The menus were strange. The food didn't "flow" e.g. the soup had an Indian curry flavor, followed by something with spaghetti sauce. The beef bourguignon was delicious, but there were 5 or 6 small pieces of beef. The age of the passengers varied, but most were senior citizens as expected. The Viking Buri had a few evening walks when it was dark, walking on uneven ground and cobblestones. This just doesn't make sense except to fill a square! When I received my flight itinerary, generated by a computer, it was outrageous, spending two nights in different airports on the return trip. HOWEVER, by paying $50 per person I was able to talk to a Viking rep in person to get a more realistic flight schedule. Viking should be ashamed to associate themselves with Air France. They are well aware of multiple labor strike actions by Air France. My flight from Marseilles to Paris was delayed an hour just as we were ready to board. I received a phone call last week informing me that Air France was not accountable for this because the Air Traffic Controllers called a strike! I had to RUN to make my connecting flight in Paris as they were paging me overhead ready to close the doors of the plane. When I finally arrived in Miami, I was 1 of 120 passengers whose luggage was not loaded onto the plane. The Air France customer service rep's attitude was "I don't care". I had to file a report online [they were well aware of the passengers names and baggage numbers since the rep had a clipboard with this information.] Every day I checked to see when my bag would be delivered. "Still searching" was the message I received. There are 3 direct flights/day from Paris to Miami. By day 5 I lost hope! My luggage was delivered 6 days and 18 flights later to my sister's house down the street! I filed a complaint with the department of transportation. The airline is required to respond within 30 days. I had to purchase some basic necessities--I had 12 days of clothes, cosmetics, etc in my suitcase and I am waiting for reimbursement. Air France said the check is in the mail! I met some great people on the cruise and this is one birthday I will always remember!! Read Less

This is our third Viking River Cruise. We enjoyed the food and wine on this cruise. We also thought the captain and the cruise director were brilliant and fun. More importantly, the excursions were well organized with knowledgeable tour guides (particularly Leif). Our only disappointment on this cruise was “the early bird” special mentality of the passengers. Guests rushed for the dining room frantically and grabbed the window tables. After say 2 hours, the waiters started to rush people out of the restaurant to clean up the dining room. On other cruises, we have had flexibility to tour a museum and arrive at dinner between 8 and 8:15 p.m. at a more leisurely pace. It was odd. The cabins are tiny, but housekeeping was excellent. Indeed, the housekeepers work from morning to evening and supplies are attentively replenished daily. Definitely take the tour of the wheelhouse. The captain is so charming when he tells how everything works. Read Less

Piano player was good and the tour director was very informative and enjoyable to hear their comments. Table servers were the same each day. We got to know them and they called us by name. Also we’re willing to do special food orders when requested. We have recommended Viking many times to other friends and have already book another river cruise over a year in advance. I would recommend you reduce the number of words required in the feedback section otherwise travelers will probably avoid providing feedback. Generally one can express their positive comments in less than 150 words. Read Less

This was our second Viking cruise. The first was from Switzerland to Amsterdam a few years ago, and it was wonderful in all respects. The Paris to Normandy cruise was not as good. No issue with the room, which was nice and well maintained (except for difficulty flushing the toilet). The onboard entertainment was sparse but of good quality, the ports of call were interesting, and the excursions also were fine and well run. However, the ambiance on the ship was bland, the staff was not particularly ingratiating, and the food was certainly nothing special. Nothing was dramatically bad, but it was not particularly welcoming or positive, and certainly not up to the standard set on our prior cruise. Now that we are a few months removed from the cruise, I realize that it just was bland and not exciting, although Normandy was moving and the excursions along the way were enjoyable. We also extended the trip in Paris, and truly enjoyed those extra days and the city. Read Less

I chose the Viking Paris to NormNdy River Cruise based on what I heard and was not disappointed in the least. The Crew was great and ship was beautiful. Food and the beverage service was first class. Excursions were awesome and onboard entertainment great. An Air France strike during the cruise caused some passenger concern but Viking was on top of the situation assisting in rebooking flights on other carriers. I can not say enough about the friendliness and courtesy of all onboard staff. The restaurant provided a varied menu each day and included some standard items that could be ordered each day. Other fare offered in the restaurant were regional dishes. Wine and beer are offered st no additional cost with the lunch and evening meals. Local entertainers were brought onboard at several ports of call to add to the onboard entertainment experience. During our Normandy American Cemetery visit we were able to participate in a ceremony honoring the fallen. A special event on a very special cruise. Read Less

The promotional price was good and Viking always gives great service. However, the included flights to and from France were fraught with delays and cancellations. The travel was the only downer to the trip. We had asked for consideration in assigning seats due to a medical condition and we were told that it was not possible on the return leg of the trip. This was very disappointing. The cabin was adequate and conveniently located; the room service was excellent. The dining experience was great as usual and so was the entertainment. Wait staff and chef did an excellent job. Brenton, our tour director also did an excellent job and was very efficient and concerned for everyone's welfare. The included shore excursions as well as the optional excursions were very good. There were no children on this cruise. We hope to make Viking Ocean our next cruise; however, we are sure more river cruises will be on our bucket list, too! Read Less
