We chose Scenic as we had travelled with them once before. We were not disappointed. The whole time we felt cared for and nurtured. The cabin was beautifully appointed with an airy balcony and plenty of space. Dining options were numerous and all food and drink was fantastic quality. Entertainment included an onboard pianist, in addition to performers being brought aboard from various ports. We were even treated to a recital by a classical quartet in a Château, where Scenic docked just for the evening performance, then sailed on. Very special! Most of all, the staff were welcoming, attentive, competent and caring, which always makes a trip. There was always a personal touch. The cruise director was amazing - a French national who was full of wonderful insights into her native country. Hotel Manager ensured all F&B ran seamlessly. Food and drink choices were incredibly varied and top quality. Highly recommend! Read Less

I would definitely recommend Avalon Cruise Seine River Cruise! I have always wanted to see the Beaches at Normandy & the American Cemetery, being there on the 4th of July made it even more special. That morning our dining area was decorated for the 4th of July - very thoughtful - the chef even made us a flag cake for dessert that night! Because of my budget, I chose the least expensive cabin & it was perfect - plenty of room - I didn't care about the view because I could go on deck for the view. The ship was immaculate, the food was delicious and the crew spoiled us. Gail was our cruise director - she was excellent! The evening entertainment was great - different every night, covering all interests. I really appreciated all of the crew members who helped to spoil us & kept us laughing! The group who served us both in the dining room & the bar are very hard workers & I want to acknowledge all of them. The transfers went very smoothly. I liked all of the excursions & the tour guides were very knowledgeable & proud of the cities we toured. I just can't say enough about this trip! I would do it again. I would recommend 2 days in Paris either before or after the cruise. I would NOT recommend staying at eh Pullman Hotel! It was very clean but the staff their was rude & less than helpful. Read Less

Our cruise was wonderful! From the moment we stepped on board we were treated like royalty by the staff. We especially enjoyed Patricia, our cruise director. Her attention to us and our needs was top notch, and Viking if lucky to have her on staff. The service was excellent and we even made some friends with staff and guests! I loved the dining options...al fresco, nothing but great views, small and large tables depending on your mood. Kind of felt like a place "where everybody knows your name" and I can't wait to go again. Best part is, you feel like a tourist but get a relaxing vacation all at the same time. Many times we opted out of excursions just to sit on top of the boat and watch the beautiful scenery slide by! Don't miss booking a room with a "juliet" balcony. The option to open the sliding glass door and watch the world go by morning, noon and night was amazing! Read Less

First of all let me start by saying I don’t usually bother giving any reviews as I believe nothing can be absolutely perfect in life and I like being tolerant and giving the benefit of the doubt. However I do feel that our experience on the A-Rosa Viva does warrant a review, especially as an ‘educational’ exercise to non- German speaking travellers like us. Will seek to make the review as detailed and fair as possible. The ports Let me start with a description or the trip itself. The ports which we visited were Secondary ports. Some locations were nice such as in Les Pays where we walked to St Germain. But the rest were nothing to write home about. Minor ports not much to see. The ship The vessel is average. Small to medium sized and with nothing much to do. It has one Main buffet restaurant and a lounge. The cabins As a family of four, 2 adults and 2 kids, and with just 3 family rooms on ship (which were all taken very early In the day), we had to be split and take two rooms and these were not even interconnecting. Pillows were awful and the ship offered no solution. I had to sleep on 3 folded towels. Toiletries were very very basic even for us premium payers Entertainment This was Average to mediocre. Practically it just consists of a DJ who changes music genre every night. Kids enjoyed dancing but for us adults it was quiet boring. There was no other entertainment except for this. New Year’s Eve was slightly better as two singers were brought in for 1.5 hrs. Fitness and leisure This consists of a Very small area for what they call ‘gym’ consisting of 3 cardio machines and a mat. Kids club The kids animator was a lovely caring lady. She organised crafts for kids and they loved it, but from a parent point of view, this solution was scant. This lady was on her own and kids club was not the usual organised club we are used to where kids are catered for with a full programme and with high security etc. This Was an informal arrangement with a very caring and nice animator. Food & Beverages This was average to high quality. Some nice dishes here and there but the genre was mainly German food except for one French cuisine night. The chefs were lovely people and very caring and good at their work. Excursions This was the cherry on the cake and the matter that literally could have ruined all the experience, were it not for the fact that we were a nice group and good company to each other. First of all, as soon as we went on ship, before any presentations were given to us on the excursions, we already knew which excursions we wanted to book. There wasn’t much to choose from anyway as it was practically one main excursion per port and we were ready to book immediately. But every time we went to book (three times in all) we were told off by two stern reception/admin ladies. We were practically put in place and told sternly to wait for the presentation on excursions which would tk place on the evening of the first night. We dutifully complied. We patiently waited for a 45 min presentation in German and a 15 min summary in English. Then we went to book. Only this time we were bombed by two main facts, mainly 1. Vernon excursion was now fully booked (but they had not taken our booking in the first place on the morn!) 2. All excursions would be in German! This cruise was sold to us as an international one. We were basically told we could book excursions at half price but these would not be in English. This was shocking to us! We wanted to pay full price fair and square but for something we could understand! How could one endure a 6 hour excursion in a language of which we understood nothing! We tried the first excursion and the experience was horrible to say the least. The guide was very rude to us and when we asked to have some points delivered briefly in English (just a couple of pointers), she practically shouted on top of her Voice that we have not paid for this! This Was highly embarrassing infront of other guests also since we had never asked not to pay full price. So we decided to just cancel all other excursions as it was a useless exercise. Of course this matter did ruin the rest the trip since we then went to towns on our own, and with no detailed guidance whatsoever. This leads me to a description of the staff on board the ship Staff - hospitality The cleaning and cooking staff were lovely people. They made sure nothing was a problem. One example is the fact that food on board is not very ‘child friendly’ but the chef always prepared pasta for kids to make sure there was something child-oriented. Staff- admin The receptionists and admin were a major issue. This relates to two ladies from three. The cruise manager tried his best to make things slightly better. However for such two ladies in question, everything was a problem. They always replied in an unfriendly, stoic way to our questions, they sent us away when we tried to book excursions early morn, they literally huffed and puffed at our questions, and never went out of their way to make things happen for us, despite knowing that the ship was at fault at having advertised its services and facilities as international and sold them as such to non-German passengers but did not live up to this promise. When we asked for a mere printout of a power point presentation in english of the locations we would visit, even this was a major issue. Our major complaint in fact is not merely that the cruise does in no way cater for non-German speakers but also the fact that our plea was handled so unprofessionally and with no empathy by these administrators. As a summary I would not recommend this cruise at all to non- German speakers and would give it an average 2-3 stars for entertainment Read Less

I enjoyed the cruise very much. Even with the rioting in Paris, Viking kept everyone safe and comprimised with excursions to everyone’s satisfaction. Staff was wonderful,as was all the excursions they offered. The ceremony at Normandy Beach was very moving. I don’t have any negative comments to give about this cruise. The ports and all the sights were very enjoyable. The ship was very clean and laid out very well. The food served was excellent. The embarkation and disembarkation all was very smooth, and handled very well by the ship staff. I have sailed Viking before and have two additional cruises booked right now. I would very highly recommend Viking to anyone and everyone. I recommend both the river cruises as well as the ocean cruises. The service and ports of call are all well thought out and are offered at no cost in most instances, also the free WiFi and the beverages offered for no additional cost at meal times is a great plus. We absolutely had a fantastic time. Our cruise director, chefs etc were amazing!!! They were so kind!! The small things they did really impressed me! When arriving back from an excursion they offered hot lemon towels and hot broth or juice! I thought that was just a special touch! The food was absolutely amazing. We had a chef helping on our cruise I believe from Serbia and he would recommend certain dishes each night that we always tried and they were amazing! Along with a special thanksgiving dinner as well!! The accommodations were amazing, the captain and crew were amazing. Loved Bea, Mia, martins , the captain and all of them!!!!! We wanted to experience Paris and all of the history in the area. We thought a river cruise was the best way to accomplish this. We were not disappointed! Museums, castles, palaces were fabulous. Normandy was emotional. Wish you held the Paris at night tour earlier in the week because people are preparing to leave early the next morning. Each stop had a great tour and lots of information about the area. The menu varied daily with the specials, and it was very good. I think the kitchen staff did a great job. The staff was very friendly and I was impressed that after the first day, they always said my name. Accommodations were very comfortable and it was easy to sleep at night. Hardly knew we were moving. Staff did a great job cleaning the room. Loved the balcony and the view. Overall, great experience and I’ll travel with you again! Read Less

We have sailed with Scenic once before and our experience was extremely positive, so we decided to take the plunge and do another one. We were not disappointed on any level. We did the Spectacular South of France cruise because this one involved no nighttime cruising, and was a little slower paced in the afternoons for the most part, which appealed to us NEGATIVES: The things that could have been better are few and far between, but there's always room for better. Scenic did our flight arrangements, and we found out a month or two before leaving (after setting it up well in advance), that our flight out of Nice was too early and could not get to the airport in time. To their credit, they did fix it, but it was a little disconcerting to be up in the air (so to speak) for a while. We arrived in Paris, and the next morning took a bus to the train station, and then the high speed train to the Sapphire. It's a little nicer on other cruises to arrive in the embarkation city and be on the ship right away. Can't be helped in this case since there's no large airport in Chalon-sur-Saone where it starts. A couple of the excursions had tour guides who were very slow at finding the English word for explanations, which was a slight hassle. The ship has been redecorated well, but the toilet roll holders are attached with one screw and are all coming loose or tearing from the wall. (Nit picky, I know.) Beer selection is fair, although I kind of fell in love with a french beer, so it really didn't matter. Be prepared to moor with other ships and people walking through your lobby. To be honest, this was minimal, and I could have cared less; just that a lot of people mention that. They all do it. POSITIVES: So the rest of the cruise is great. I'll try to give a feel for what my wife and I experienced. In Paris Scenic put us up at the very posh Westin, in a perfect location. Loved it. The welcoming person was so very nice, and did a very nice informational meeting. The ship is beautiful. All very sleek greys, black, white and silver, with small splashes of color. Sort of an urban chic. Always spotless. Staff members are constantly cleaning and polishing. Sanitizer dispensers are strategically placed, and they asked that everyone use them when entering and leaving the main areas - we like that. There are germs from all over the world on any ship, and that helps a lot. We had one of the "royal" suites, which involves a few extra perks, although any level has perks. No tipping, which is wonderful. You absolutely feel no pressure to tip - wow! Every excursion you choose is included, no extra fees ever. Beer, wine and alcohol are all day and night at no charge. You can relax in the afternoon with a glass of wine without waiting for dinner. We both thought the meals were wonderful. I know some people get huffy over the fact that lunch is a buffet. With only 153 passengers, I don't find that a big deal at all, and there are still menu items at both breakfast and lunch if you don't wish to stand in line for 30 seconds. My wife has some dietary restrictions, and once they caught on, it was wonderful how they catered to her. No gluten or dairy - and the chef even made her three separate desserts for her birthday following those restrictions. That was above and beyond to us. If you don't care for the menu options, at all the meals you could simply order a chicken breast, salmon, rib eye, and a couple others. I had the rib eye one night and my wife had the chicken breast - both were delicious. Service was timely, the wine flowed freely, and the dining room was lovely. The host discussed the wines for the night each evening, so you could choose knowing what you were getting. They weren't the very expensive wines, but excellent medium range wines. If you don't like one, tell the waiter and try another. Can't ask for more than that. Breakfasts were great too, large buffet, and a omelet station. I had the eggs benedict 5 or 6 times it was so good. Fresh fruit always. And the desserts were works of art. Kudos to the staff and chef for the service and quality. Special dinners each night were explained at length by the chef himself, which is a nice touch. I'd like to mention the staff. The butler, Edita, who showed us our suite was so welcoming and efficient. I can't say enough about her service throughout the cruise. Also, our two male butlers than helped us, Dominik and Vladi were practically begging us to give them tasks. And we did, from laundry to ironing to breakfast in the room, etc. All done quickly and so nicely. I had two massages from a young man named Dragan, who also led exercise programs each morning (which we didn't do). He was professional and also fascinating to talk to. Such a nice human being we had great discussions while he worked his wonders on my muscles. Best massage ever, really. The Eastern European people are so genuine, hard working, smart, and family oriented. A breath of fresh air. A young lade, named Sevit, at the front desk went out of her way to help, and give recommendations for visits to towns and shopping. She is also to be congratulated for her wonderful demeanor and knowledge. The cruise director, Eric, was everywhere, putting out fires, making sure things went well on the excursions, etc. Well done. I guess to summarize the staff, superb. I'm running out of superlatives here! Loved the bar staff, and the bartender was great. We did tip some of these staff, although there's no need, but how could we not? The daily life and excursions and entertainment were memorable, filled with culture and history. I'll mention some of the ones we did just to impart a flavor of what they're about: All afternoon and evening the lounge has a very competent piano player named Paolo, which adds a nice touch to the feel. He could play most anything. We went to the town of Beaune and Hospice Hotel Dieu, which was a lesson in history along with a perfectly preserved hospital from the 1400's. The architecture was fabulous, with a colored-tiled roof that is simpy not to be missed. E-bikes were available almost every day, on your own or organized rides. We didn't use them, but friends we made did and thought they were very easy to use and fun. One of my favorite excursions was to a truffle farm, where a family farmer and his dog, Chinook, took us into his truffle trees to hunt. He loved telling us all about the truffles, how they are grown, the dog, everything. This is something special, as opposed to just looking at churches and castles (which also is interesting). His wife then took us into their 16th century farm house and served us truffle butter she made, with wine and bread. This was a gem outing......don't miss it. We ate at the special L'Amour Restaurant on night. Really nicely done with impeccable wait staff. Also ate at the Captain's table, and he was personable and interesting. We didn't do the Table La Rive because we were busy, but heard it was also good. Had a band one night, Krystal Live Band, fun music. Al little schmaltzy, but talented. Went to Cluny where the great Abbey once stood. A part is still there, and the museum with models and explanations helps you understand the grandeur and importance of the place: Largest church in the world until St. Peters was built. Another favorite and highly recommended "Scenic Freechoice" was Medieval Perouges. A walled city very intact, and there's not a corner or nook that isn't ripe for an amazing pose or picture. The tour guide was so very good, and some free time and fun shops. That day we had a silkpainting demo on board in the afternoon. Very interesting. One evening went to the Scenic Rouge Circus Performance for a show and dessert. Lots of young talent and acrobatics. Had a French Paradox Talk, which was fun too. In Tournon we had evening aperatifs after dinner on the terrace of a castle with a panoramic view that was killer. Along with some live music, it was relaxed and delicious. Later was a music quiz that was lively and fun. They really try to keep you entertained if you desire. We picked a trip to Tain L'Hermitage and the Valrhona Chocolate factory one day, which was imformative and who doesn't like taste testing chocolate. Spent a little money there I'm afraid. The chocolatier who gave us the talk was a little long-winded, but the museum there taught me a lot. Two dancers one night" Pierre and Faustine" were so good they almost put dancing with the stars to shame. A delight. The Ardeche Park and Lavender museum was very nice - again, we learned about something we knew little of, and also saw some splendid natural beauty. That night we had a fench female singer who did Edith Pilaf among others, and she had a great sound. We Did the Chateauneuf-du-Pape vinyeard/village tour with wine-tasting. The history was superb, I loved this one, and the wine was so good we ordered some to be shipped home. We didn' do a lot of wine-tasting excursions, but this one was a gem. We toured the Pope's palace in Avignon later that same day. Just look at a couple of their pictures and you'll know it's deserving of it's UNESCO world heritage designation. A different favorite of mine was Pont du Gard and Uzes. If you're at all considering this excursion, look at some pictures of the 2,000 year old aqueduct, and you'll be hooked. The museum there was outstanding also, and the tour guide gave us plenty of time there, per the recommendation of Eric, our tour director. A special evening was dinner at the Pope's Palace. The room was so "important", can't think of the right word, because 5 papal enclaves were held right there in the 1300's. So much history. The food was fancy, but not my favorite, except for the really good pear dessert. They had a string quartet that was as good as any I've ever heard....wow. We went to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, with a fascinating church, right on the Mediterranean coast. Lots of interesting little shops. Also went to the bird Park, but it started raining and most elected not to go in (including us). That evening was a gypsy show, and they were so much better than I expected. A real treat. Another excursion I would highly recommend was Les Baux-de-Provence and Olive Oil Farm. Baux was a very cool little walled city, picturesque and fun, with lots of fun shops amidst the cobblestoned streets. And the olive farm, once again, was something I knew little about. It is a family business, and has been for many generations, even with their own 14th century private chapel. The process of making the olive oil was so well done, as was the intriguing tasting we did with one of the owner's daughters. Do it. I will say we loved the Scenic Tailormade devices. On one of ours the battery was bad, and they quickly replaced that. The sound was usually very good, except in a very windy situation. You can also take them out on your own when roaming around, and they have a built in GPS that will give you pertinent info on anything you're near. Also, take them around the ship and set to cruise mode, and they alert you to interesting things you're passing on the shore with a history. Once again, I highly recommend Scenic. It's not at all like a huge cruise ship where there are so many stores, restaurants, venues, pools, etc. But that's the charm of a small boat; almost like a temporary community expertly formed and guided by the staff. We met so many fun people. Don't get me wrong, everyone doesn't become friends, but it was easy to make some, and it made the cruise so much better. I'm 63 and there were some a fair amoung younger and quite a few a little older (retired), and a few elderly. I think all ages can enjoy this type of cruise. Of course, motion sickness is no issue here. I have read negative reviews of Scenic. Everyone isn't pleased with the same things, but I feel like with the amazing service and the multitude of choices in entertainment, food and excursions, I can't imagine not having the best of vacations on the Scenic Sapphire. Thank you Scenic for your concept and execution. You are worth the little extra money that one pays as compared to some other river cruise lines. Read Less

As past travelers with Viking we expected and received the best treatment. This trip we did the pre-extension in Paris which allowed us to see so many more local sites before our cruise began. Thus, more time to experience the great "City of Lights". From the Eiffel tower, Notre Dame, St. Chapelle, Montamare Hill's Sacre-Coeur Basilica and too many more to mentioned. When we travel we try to take in as many sites as time will allow. Once onboard the staff, as experienced in the past, were always courteous and personable. The shore excursions are always a hi-light and we always try to take in the majority The local guides are always knowledgeable which helps to enrich the experience. The food on the Rolf was great in all respects, but my absolute favorite this trip were the Black Mussels. one word, Fabulous. Again, we were blessed to have met some wonderful new acquaintances, thanks to the small ship atmosphere. Just so I don't miss this the embarkation and disembarkation went extremely smooth. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was a themed World War 2 history cruise. If we hadn't taken a private tour before getting onboard, I would have left disappointed. The guest lecturer, Nigel Stewart, was able to give us a broad overview of the history of the war that happened in the areas we were traveling. He stayed on ship all week and you could ask him questions pretty much at any time. The disappointment of the WW2 history was in the tours that were offered. There is a 2 1/2 hour travel time involved each way, so I understand that their is only so much time. But, we felt rushed during the tour because we had to get back on the bus and go again. So much to see and learn and we left feeling that we needed to go back and see things again because of what we missed. The ship was very nice and clean. A very modern ship. Other than watching the world float by or sitting in the sun, not much else to do on board. The WIFI is spotty at best unless you sit in the lounge area. The food was disappointing, but was okay. If possible, we ate in the lounge every night as they served the same food as in the main dinner area. It was in sample size portions so that was nice to try the different selections. The crew was very nice all around. They made the trip as they were always trying to exceed your expectations. The captain was nice and was always around. Our room was very nice, clean, and felt bigger than it was. We were lucky to not be docked next to other boats all the time, so we had a decent view in the different docking locations. Overall, I would sail with Avalon again, but do things more on my own for tours. Read Less

We took two teenage grandsons with us, and that was when they could go. We took the cruise as a high school graduation present for the 18 year old one and took the 14 year old one too. All 4 of us had a great time, and the cruise met and exceeded our expectations. We thought the food, service by the wait staff and presentation of the food was outstanding. The shore excursions and the talks before them were great. Those talks prepared us well for the excursions. We all learned quite a bit about the places we visited. Since the cruise was primarily for the boys, not knowing whether they would ever get back to Paris, the Normandy beaches and the wonderful towns on the Seine, they will have lasting memories of the places we visited and have the desire to return to France at a later date. Those were our primary purposes of the cruise, and the were fulfilled. Read Less

I am of a military family (Army), and have learned about the D-day invasion from family and books. I also am very excited about history and reading is an important part of my life. So, when this experience was offered by Viking, I jumped at the opportunity. This cruise made me feel like I stepped into the history books that sit on my desk. Notre Dame, the Louvre, King Richard the Lion Hearted, Giverny and Monet, Vernon, Rouen, and very emotionally - Omaha Beach, the invasion plans inscribed in the memorial, and the white cross against the kelly green green grase and dark green trees in American cemetery. The night before each excursion, the staff would describe what we were about to see the next day, so that when we stepped on shore, the history books, the staff descriptions, and the scenery all blended into a fabulous experience. Friends who have had very positive experiences with Avalon Waterways, highly recommended it to us. It was our first and all our experiences exceeded our expectations. The crew, each one, was extremely efficient, courteous, and especially friendly to the guests which, I must say, were a delight to meet and great to become friends and socialize with. A plus was the knowledgeable cruise director and his meticulous attention to detail, schedules, and in simply directing everyone to where they should be at any given time and in a timely way. What a guy he is! Also, the tour guides were knowledgeable about the various venues we visited. The food served in the lounge and in the dining room was excellent, as well as the friendly ship's company who cooked and served the guests. No complaint or mistake, if any, went uncorrected as far as we know. I might add that the musical entertainment that was presented on the vessel was a pleasant and unexpected plus. The berthing was perfecto. Comfortable, very accommodating, and with marvelous riverside scenery. We are looking forward our booking another river cruise with Avalon Waterways. Viking provided everything needed for this trip from arranging the air transportation, greeting at the airport, transportation from airport to hotel, bus from hotel to ship, outstanding local tour guides, delicious food, courteous staff & Captain, room service, etc. We are looking forward to book another trip with Viking. The excursions were guided by local historians that really added extra information that only a local resident would know. Each excursion was accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and we had an earpiece to hear everything that was said. Umbrellas were provided by Viking that were red and very easy to identify so not to stray from your group. Bottled water was always available to take on your excursion and we were always met with a warm beverage upon return to the ship. The food was all local flavors and the chef would purchase local food items at each port to prepare for the guests. The menu had so much to choose from including a simple burger to filet or fish. The servers were sensitive to the allergy needs of all guests. I loved the detail that was given to us and would highly recommend Viking. Read Less

I had a birthday onboard and they went out of their way to make it super special including all of my favorites for dinner. Fresh pastries from a local bakery were brought in each morning. The cabin was very comfortable and had all the amenities that we needed. We especially liked the shower and heated towel rack. Hot water was abundant and unlimited bottled water appeared in your cabin. Though you never saw the hostesses go in and out of the staterooms, the cabin was always kept tidy. The crew knew our names from the get go and were always very attentive and friendly. There were enough bicycles onboard for cycling. The countryside was just as we thought it would be -- maybe better! The slow pace was enjoyable. We thought this would be a once in a lifetime adventure, but we now think we are going to do it again!!! Read Less

It was advertised as a cruise to remember and it was,the service was impeccable the crew were most helpful,Val was great always there to help and advise.the wines were great as was the great coffee.shamethe captains speech on the last night was so abrupt cheers and that was it.hardly worth waiting for.it was the only time I saw him speak,The only problem we found, was the food was not very satisfactory not hot enough, often over cooked, plus the portion size was minuscule,we have had many trips including the orient express, silver seas, but none served up such small portions, haveing said all this we enjoyed the the ambience and the fellow passengers, th cabins were ok ,the bed most comfortable,tv selection was good, and the ships information. Was very good, embarkation was faultless,as was disembartion, cabin crew were very good, seen but not heard, the waiting staff and bar staff were all most helpful and polite, nothing was to much trouble the were a good team. a/c was perfect, and where the ship docked was always a place close enough to walk to town, which we did at every opportunity. Wow, greeted with champagne, h, ow good is that. My advice to travelers is get to Paris a day early so you are not stressed by the travel. They pick you up at the Airport, they take your luggage, bring you to a staging place ( Hotel Pullman) and you wait several hours to take the bus to the meals were( for a cruise ship) bathroom. Real live orchids, a window wall that opens to a French Balcony. A very comfortable bed. We went to the lounge to here Caty our cruise director, tell us about the ship, the one time emergency drill and other features. Everybody loved Caty, everyday and evening she was there for our concerns and questions, thank you. We found out that we had 95 people cruising on the Tapestry II, not a lot when we have been on cruise ships with thousands. Our dining experience was fantastic, Gabriel our server made sure our wine glasses were full, take a drink and he would top it off. Thank you Gabriel for taking such good care of us. Just to mention, when we came on board the Matrei d asked if anyone had allergies, my wife is allergic to shell fish, informed him and at every meal he stopped by to see what she ordered. Caring and considering the welfare of the guests made us feel we made the right choice. Hard to be on a very personal cruise and not make new friends, we were grateful to the many new ones we made. The tours are many and fun, from the American cemetery at Normandy, Van Gogh, Monet, Paris and the many others we took, very interesting and knowledgeable guides. Would do it again. Thanks to the Captain for his singing New York, New York in French. Read Less

We did the Viking Rhine cruise last year and wanted to see Paris & the Normandy excursion seemed to fit our needs this year. As usual, our cabin was nice & they kept it that way as well as the whole ship. We found the staff extremely helpful & competent & all went out of their way to make us comfortable. The food was outstanding, the wines were good and the entertainment was very nice. Our shore excursions were just right and the guides were extremely knowledgeable & helpful. Our only complaint was the bed covering was a combination bed spread, sheet & blanket. It became too hot in the middle of the night, yet your only option was to throw if off & then it became too cool. A sheet would help, but at least have a light blanket in the closet that could be used to compensate for this poor design. Also, our tour guide to Versailles apparently lost his ticket and we were sidelined for about 30 minutes while he tried to telephone for a replacement. In the mean-time, about 3000 other people poured into the place while we just stayed out of their way. Other than that incident, he was quite competent. Read Less

Objective was to see Germany and picturesque river castes up close. Guides were very knowledgeable and understandable! We want to take another river cruise, maybe in England and Scotland, and to finish our German river cruise on other rivers. Very restful and relaxing. Would like to be able to see ahead in addition to seeing alongside. Would like a "captain's chair" or two in the room. Food and service was excellent with a great variety (but the food labels were too small). Port villages were small clean neat picturesque friendly and easy to walk around with no danger of getting lost or left behind, because the boat and river were so near. A simple map was provided each morning of the town we would be exploring that day. We took a picture of it each day to help us identify the locations of the pictures we took when we got home. Smaller passenger numbers made embarkation and debarkation easy simple and quick. It was also easy to recognize fellow passengers on shore for making acquaintances, sharing stories, and making sure you were among friends and in the right place. This was our 50th wedding anniversary, and the crew and captain made a special presentation of cake, champagne, music, and song at the front of the main window in the dining room! Very special surprise! Read Less

It was a life time goal to see Normandy so our experience with Viking previously had been so stellar we decided the best way to achieve that goal was with a trusted provider! We were not disappointed. The service is top notch, the food is exceptional and the accommodations are first rate. We met new people that will become life long friends, learned more about the rich history of the area and of the wines and cheeses also. This is one of the particular things I always tell people who ar considering a river cruise. During th sailing time there is usually beautiful scenery to enjoy on either side of the ship and when you reach a port there is a tour to educate you about the area and also leave you with time to experience it on your own. I highly recommend any of the cruises offered by Viking as a result of our two previous sailings. Read Less

We decided to take a Viking River Cruise just because it looked like a good thing to try for our first trip abroad. And we were not disappointed! Starting with our flight. We chose the round trip air option from Viking on Air France, great airline. We were met on our arrival in Paris by Viking representatives and taken by motor coach to our ship The Viking Rinda, the ship was just beautiful. We were greeted graciously and checked in, then explored the ship a little and by the time we got to our very nicely appointed Veranda (B) cabin on the main deck our luggage was already there. Dining aboard the ship was an delightful experience. We looked forward to every meal on board ship. The entertainment and activities provided on board made us feel included with all that was going on. Our ports were very convenient and shore excursions were both beautiful and educational. Now about the crew... From the Captain to the deck hands, What a ride, smooth and comfortable. From The Head Chef to the waiters, food and drink we could not have enjoyed more. From the Program Director to the tour guides, knowledgeable and well coordinated. And from the Hotel Manager to the cabin attendants, very accommodating and attentive. We would like to say that the entire crew were courteous, hard working and eager to meet all our needs. None of our request went unanswered or unfulfilled. Would we go again? Absolutely, We are already looking for our next destination! Read Less

The cruise was very enjoyable and very busy. There are so many bucket list excursions that you fill up your itinerary and have very little down time. It was a phenomenal trip made even better by the Program Director Mimi. We were a large group of 11 traveling together so we were a hard group to miss, but most of the staff (especially waiters, housekeeping and Mimi) greeted you by name most of the time. we had a range of ages from 10 to senior citizen and the staff did a wonderful job of accommodating all ages and physical ability levels perfectly. The excursions were excellent. The Paris at Night excursion was fully booked, but they added a bus for us. We inquired about the excursion that morning and by lunch they had another bus arranged. I dropped an earring down the drain and went to the desk to ask Mimi to see if there was someone that could help. Before i made it back to my room an engineer was waiting at my door with the earring in his hand. he had already disassembled the pipe and fixed it back. There is not a single thing the staff of the Viking Rolf could have done better! The only complaint would be that having to get up so early for the return flight home is not enjoyable. I don't expect to stay til 9 or 10 in the morning, but leaving at 4:30a is a tad early. Read Less

Everyone that had been on Viking River Cruises said they were wonderful. The Paris cruise was wonderful. Food was great, tours were easy, and the staff was more than helpful. Do not miss going on a Viking ship. They take care of everything. Airport transfers were so easy. The ship was just the right size and easy to get around. Eating schedules were excellent. The trip to Normandy was well worth the cruise and the reason we went in the first place. Loved having guides with such great knowledge of all areas we toured. They have hired such great people to manage everything about your trip.Normandy is well worth the reason to go. We trip the Pre-package to Paris and glad we did. Wish we had taken even more days in Paris. There are so many museums to visit. Don't miss going to the top of the Eiffel Tower. The Hotel Rochester was a perfect location also with our daily tour guide. Read Less

We wanted to see Normandy beaches, Monet's home and gardens plus medieval cities, castles and European river homes. Shore excursions were fantastic with interesting history info, war places, explanation of how medieval homes were built, viewing of castles on hllls, how they were built, etc. We were NOT taken to jewelry or other shops to buy anything but were given free time to do so if desired which was a definite plus from other ocean ship excursions. This was our first river cruise due to the higher price than ocean cruises so we were expecting great service, food and excursions. Viking delivered every day of the 8 day cruise on all 3 with excellent variety of food, ample portions, seconds if desired at dinner, 2 entrees or desserts available if wanted to try different foods and couldn't make a decision on which to choose! Viking's Staff were tremendously friendly, courteous, helpful and professional but also personable. They even danced the "Achy, Breaky Heart" song with cowboy hats so this was hilarious since we are from Dallas, TX, and everyone enjoyed the comraderie of the crew. We enjoyed the river cruise so much we are taking another one in October, the Grand European for 15 days and can't wait to see more sights and the Viking crew as we know they'll go out of their way to make the cruise the most memorable one possible.
