Ship was lovely and exceptionally cjean. Service was excellent. Food was great with a wide variety of choice. Entertainment was excellent and overall was excellent cruise! Waiters and cabin staff very courteous and friendly and really went out of their way to please you. Restaurant managers were excellent. We upgraded to premium drinks package but would recommend it. We noticed that other passengers who had not upgraded were served premium drinks. The DJ in night club was excellent and played a good variety of music for all ages. Thought the whole cruise was very streamlined and very well managed and organised. Would definitely recommend and is very good value for money. The only complaint I have is the Cartegena Trolley Train excursion! Complete waste of money at £25.50 each. The train was extremely uncomfortable and cramped and spent the whole journey sardined between two people travelling backwards! The tour guide was awful! Read Less

November 2019. Over the last decade, there has been something of a revival in interest and the number of people cruising, and sadly an equal number of operators providing substandard cruises. Having cruised 8 timespreviously with P&O, NCL, and RCI, we decided a change was needed as the last P&O cruise we took two years ago nearly put us off cruising for life. We booked the cruise 8 months in advance with Igloo online, paid and additional fee for a cabin 'guaranteed' to be on decks 6 or 7. When we arrived we were given a cruise card for our cabin on deck 2...argued our case with reception, but got nowhere. Determined not to let this spoil our holiday, we went to the buffet for a snack whilst waiting for our cases to arrive. I had a kind of stew, and bit into a raw sprout that couldn't even be cut with a knife. I tried to explain this to several members of staff, but none of them posessed enough knowledge of the English language to understand what I was saying. Undeterred, I put this to the back of my mind, and went to the cabin. An incredibly helpful, friendly and fun room stewardess welcomed my wife and me to the room, and we settled in. My wife soon noticed large amounts of black mould around the base of the shower. Of the 3 mains sockets, only one had UK 220v (and this was a 2-pin continental plug socket), the other two supplied 110v continental power. The beds (two singles pushed together) were rock hard...no give whatsoever - planks pretending to be beds. The TV had a constant hum, and played 5 movies on continual loop throughout the cruise, with no live tv, owing to 'an antenna fault that we're hoping to rectify'...but didn't. The drinks are all-inclusive, and I can see why. I asked for a Coke...I got a totally flat glass of Coke substitute..the spirits are all flooded with cheap mixers to the point where even a double is barely detectable, and you have to wait 15-20 minutes to get your drinks to arrive owing to the chronic lack of staff. The dining in the main dining room was something of a mixed bag. Again, too few staff (in common with every line these days) that constantly got your order wrong, especially breakfast time. It has to be said that although the portions were very small, the food was of a higher standard than P&O and light years ahead of Royal Caribbean...albeit never really more than warm at best. The head of house management were very full of themselves, and at times plain rude...one of them argued loudly with a guest (because he had arrived 4 minutes early) in front of a queue of guests. The entertainment...words cannot describe just how bad this was. A rude and mediocre acoustic guitarist appeared 4-5 times a day, every day, a deafeningly over-amplifies pianist, bashing out floor fillers, appeared 2-3 times a day, a talented saxophonist twice a day, constant quizzes, mock Tv game shows, and totally amateurish stage shows. All of them played Queen tunes to the point where you'd have thought they were a new band. To me, one of the best parts of a cruise are the evening shows, but even these were poor.(Push the entertainer into the pool...I kid you not...was reminiscent of Hi De Hi) After 4 days of trying to put a positive spin on things, I gave up, and waited for this particular horse to be put out of it's misery, and for the cruise to end. Most of the staff were friendly, it must be said, but overall the whole shebang resembled a working mens club at sea. Avoid. Please, avoid. Read Less

I`m just back from a week on Discovery 2 and wasn`t disappointed. The ship was a lovely ship and the service was fantastic as I would expect from TUI. People have moaned about the bar service, that just ain`t true as the service was second to none and this is my 6th cruise and I`ve seen bad bar service on other ships. They even have wine and lager on tap in the Islands buffet area. The staff in every department of the ship are so hard working and can`t do enough for you. The ship it`s self is a nice ship and the itinerary was really good. I had a Balcony and have now learnt to be at the bow and on the starboard side or you`ll not get any sun and the smoke from the funnels at night comes down the side towards the aft sides. The 47 restaurant wasn`t the best menu and sometimes you had to wait about 40 mins to get seated, even if they weren`t full. Was the biggest negative on the ship. It was better to go up to the Islands Buffet as the food was good. The shows were ok, but nothing brilliant, as I expect from TUI. The tv in the room was worse than useless, no news channels and limited programmes with same films repeated everyday. The discovery 2 isn`t for kids either. very few facilities for them. But overall I would def go back, but try the Eplorer2 as it`s adults only. Read Less

I have just returned from a 7 day Cosmopolitan Classic cruise around the Mediterranean on the Marella Discovery 2. This was my first cruise with my family which includes my husband, 27 year old daughter and my 86years old mother-in-law who finds it difficult to walk and needs a wheelchair. The ship was beautiful, very grand and our balcony rooms were clean and comfortable. The entertainment was very good with different Broadway shows every night, a piano singer, opera singer, a band and more. The food was superb with different menus every night. All the people that worked on the boat from the cooks, the restaurant staff, the room staff, bar staff, etc were very attentive to the needs of my elderly mother-in-law and our needs, nothing was to much trouble. In fact I cannot praise them enough, they always had big smiles on their faces and made the experience for all my family a very memorable one. This was our first booking with a TUI holiday and I certainly will be using them again. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we had never done Portugal and Spain - we teamed up with a 3 night stay in Alcudia. From the first evening we were given cause to be disappointed, arriving for dinner at 7.15 to be told the restaurant was full and we were given a pager to come back in 40 minutes. On entering the restaurant it was evident there was a problem. Only half of the restaurant was being used - it looked a staffing issue - the dining experience was totally compromised and there was a total lack of atmosphere - previous cruise experience has been one of very busy restaurants full of chatter and very busy staff. The bar service on this ship was appalling - this was raised with the Bar Manager around the pool to no evail. I raised my concerns with Tui on my return only to be told that they had had no other reports of poor service or poor quality of food. My husband and I are not fussy eaters and will eat anything as long as it is served hot - most of our food was not. We even tried eating in the Italian style restaurant but received the same poor service / poor quality food. The saving grace for this cruise was the entertainment - exceptional as usual. We normally choose an outside cabin but as this was only for a week we chose an inside cabin this time and were pleasantly surprised. Our cabin was actually bigger than those with balconies. We chose this West Med cruise having cruised and enjoyed the same ship last year (Eastern Med) Drinks package had been downgraded since our previous cruise ie did not include as many cocktails as last year, so we felt obliged to take the premium package this time round. Service at the bars at times was really slow and frustrating. Entertainment was poor, we only enjoyed the comedian show. Other shows were all much the same, musical and did not really entertain us. Ended up most nights in the small casino which was good and with lovely staff. The food overall was good but we were so disappointed in the Surf and Turf meal. After paying an extra surcharge of over £30 per person, four of us were squashed around a table which was only large enough for two people with side dishes ( no choice was offered ) crowding the whole table. We much preferred the Kora La meal which also has an additional charge. In hind-site the food and atmosphere were both better in the main restaurants. Will most likely not rush back to sail with Tui, at least until the entertainment and bar service has been improved. Read Less

Marella have embarcation and disembarcation off to a T in Palma, very smooth well organised. D2 nice ship, immaculate thro out but for us didn't quite flow right from area to area, felt disjointed imo needs some rearranging, eg coffee port needs moving to deck 5 and move reception etc to where it is on 7, get rid of tapas and food in glass house and put Spa in there instead of opposite end of ship? Atrium underwhelming ditch those red lights looks like a road traffic area. Night club area very small. Just very muddled. Staff, very good, always smiling and helpful.Big shout out for Anna and her amazing buzzing pager tree at Gallery 47 as well as Praestyn, Ella and Manfred. All the food we had was good and Surf & Turf well worth the supplement of £30 per head. Our only gripe was service in the atrium bar, from ordering a drink off a waiter it was taking 15-20mins for it to get to us at the table, maybe this was because people were going to queue at the bar to get served like they do on other AI holidays? Shows, excellent as ever with Marella particularly liked Starry Night and Putting on Glitz. Very professional fab costummes. Cabin see below. Ports of call, Naples stayed on ship been 3x already, Sardinia took Tui trip to Porto Cervo which was ok but wished we had stayed in Olbia and done our own thing, Livorno, done Tuscany to death already so stayed in port did very good canal tour and wandered around nice city, Villefranche took the train to Monaco wow and Palamos an unspoilt gem worhty of a land holiday very typically Spanish. loved it. The demographic of people on D2 was completely different to that on Ex2 earlier in the year, lots of groups of 6 -8, very few kids, more tattooes than the Royal Navy and that was just the women! very varied from all age groups. D2 would we go on her again, probably.....if there was an itinerary we wanted to do but think we'll be going back to the Explorer ships as we preferred them. All in all we had a good holiday and enjoyed ourselves and would recommend Marella. Read Less

Just back from a brilliant week on the Discovery 2. This was my first cruise and choose the ship for the itinerary Cosmopolitan Classics which was a great itinerary. Loved all the destinations. I pre booked excursions which were all very good especially the wine tasting in Tuscany which I would highly recommend. The ship was stunning inside and had everything you could possibly want from a selection of restaurants and bars to choose from. You received an information page every night which included the time the ship was in port, a little about the destination, entertainment on that day and a little information about different staff on the ship. The captain was captain Chris who every day talked over the tannoy to give the guest information about the port, which deck you could disembark from, the weather and any other relevant information. He was always very friendly and encouraged guests to approach him if they had a question at any time. The staff are very friendly and helpful through out the ship and made the experience even more enjoyable. Especially the staff in the restaurant 47° who could never do enough to make sure you were happy. There is entertainment throughout the day. The evening entertainment is very good and the entertainment staff very friendly especially Sean he made a effort to always have a chat or get us up to dance. We paid for the premium package which was great you could have anything to drink at no extra cost. We had an inside plus cabin which was spacious however next time we would upgrade to a balcony as it made a big difference to us not having natural light especially at night as it’s pitch black. The housekeeping staff were excellent always friendly and cleaned the cabin to a high standard and always left a towel animal and chocolate at night which was a lovely touch. This cruise was a great first experience and I looked forward to future cruise on the Discovery 2. Read Less

This was my first cruise. After being delayed by 2.5 hours with a Tui flight we joined the ship 30 minutes before departure. On boarding we made our own way to our room and after paying £48 for a specified cabin with a double bed. We were disappointed to find 2 singles. No time for photographs on boarding. All the restaurants were shut, so after a journey time of 9 hours we went upstairs to our only choice the buffet The captain and team knew some flights would be late joining the ship but nobody at TUI cared. Arriving in the Islands buffet we were presented with 2 stale cold dishes of vegetable curry and o e dish of cold rice. After paying £2300 each for 14 days this was very disappointing. The response from the manager was the snack bar opens at 12 midnight you can go there? The rest of the dining experiences were ok, we ate in Gallery 47 and 47. The food was OK but most nights the service was slow and chaotic. The food was never hot. One. Night we upgraded to the hot stone experience In the Glass House. This was a disappointment, 6 oxo sized cubes of beef on a skewer with some peppers. Our clothing became smelly from the in your face smoke. A good dining experience was enjoyed twice which consisted of six tapas and pizza, this was in the glasshouse. We upgraded to the premier all inclusive, however the drinks were no better than the standard all inclusive , the measures were.never full and most of the drinks were prepared in a back kitchen where nobody but the staff could see what you were actually getting. Each evening the Live lounge, and Atrium bar were full, not enough seats for everybody, this is bad, all passe gets had paid a premium but for.many there was no room at the Inn. The service at the bars was slow, with no order of whose to be served next. There was a nice coffee bar, however again the seats were few and far between and those available were hard and uncomfortable. The cabins are very tired and I would grade at 2 star. Our bathroom smelt of rotten eggs. Twice our floor wasn't hovered in the room. On the second week our sheets were not changed. They needed changing! All of the resorts were miles from the port and the time in the port was too limited to really see anything. Tui destination services are not helpful, they are o ly I tested I selling overpriced tours and that is the legacy of the product. On leaving the ship the coaches were a circus to the airport and the luggage was where's Wally of the suitcase world. The one good thing I can say about TUI is they have the most amazing staff fro. Foreign shores, the British TUI staff are nothing but sales reps. The thing that spoilt it for.me was the boarding, late on board bo food, no welc9.e.drink, no apology and nothing to appease the awful start to this not cheap cruise. Try another cruise company whose ships are not tired and dated instead of.Butlns by Sea. Read Less

It was the one thing I hated every day I like to relax. This was our first cruise and we decided on the Cosmopolitan Classics cruise around the Med. Flight and transition from airport to ship was very smooth and embarkation was fast for 12 noon time of day. Our cabin was also ready when we went to put our hand luggage in it. Ship: Very clean, tidy, easy to navigate around and always seemed like there wasn't a lot of people on ship despite it being full. Staff: There was a really happy vibe on the ship and this was due to the happy and friendly staff. They simply couldn't do enough for you. Captain Chris was down to earth and gave interesting ship announcements and information. The entertainments director, Johnny, was very funny and also very informative on daily activities on his TV broadcast each day. He seemed to appear everywhere and set the fun vibe for the cruise. I can't fault all the hardworking bar staff and our cabin steward, Malvin, who's service was excellent. Entertainment: There was always something to do on the ship in the day or night from poolside, talks, dance classes, trivia and Broadway Shows. The entertainment team were top notch and the shows were amazing. The young actors/dancers/singers were all professional and amazing to watch. We went to 5 shows in 7 nights and they all worked really hard as they also work in the day and around the rest of the ship. There are also some very good musicians on the ship playing in the atrium and the live lounge. We did visit the casino some nights and had few goes on the roulette table. Food: we usually ate in the buffet as we found the quality and variety of the food to be exceptional and it suited us for time to allow us to do other things. I always find it difficult to find good vegetarian options in restaurants, but found the buffet offered so much choice for me. We didn't try the paying restaurants as we were so happy with the food in the buffet. Excursions: we booked 3 excursions for the week with Tui. Naples: the port was beautiful and very picturesque. We went to Pompeii and Vesuvius and really enjoyed this trip. Tip_ climbing the rest of the way up the volcano after the coach drops you off at 1000m was hard work, but worth it! Tui books local guides from the area who are very knowledgeable and this really makes the excursion interesting. We also went to Pisa and Wine Tasting and loved this cultural trip and even bought some wine from the vineyard. We went to Monaco and Monte Carlo as we are F1 fans and the lovely French guide gave us time on our own during the trip so we went to the 'Cafe de Paris' and had an expensive coffee and did some people watching. Some people say to not book excursions and do your own thing, but I like the ease of transport and the local guides make the trip more exciting and informative. I think the Tui excursions were value for money. I'm glad we didn't book more than 3, though as you do need time to relax. It was so exciting to find ourselves at a different port each morning and that has given us the cruise bug from now on. We also went on a 'Behind the scenes Ship tour' for £39 each. We met Captain Chris and had a 15 minute question and answer session on the bridge. We were offered tea and shown around the bridge by the third officer. We also visited the engineering room, the M1 under ship corridor, the kitchen and staff and had a glass of fizz with the Hotel manager. We also had a free photo with the Head chef and his hard working kitchen staff. This tour was great and we would highly recommend it. Overall, we had a great first cruise on a friendly and relaxed ship. All the guests were relaxed and happy due to being looked after by the staff and the happy vibe of this ship. The hardworking staff made the voyage memorable and Tui should be congratulated on all the travel organisation and ease of travel. We came home and booked our next Tui cruise for next year. Read Less

We have now been back for a few days so thought it was time I got down to writing my final and overall review of our two week, first ever, cruise. First thing I want to say is that I would definitely recommend a cruise on the TUI Marella Discovery 2 as an amazing experience on a fabulous ship (just in case you are wondering, it is a ship and not a boat, Captain Chris told us so). The ship is incredibly comfortable and I must say unbelievably clean and tidy, this being due in no uncertain terms to the tireless cleaning, polishing, hoovering, clearing, bed making and cabin tidying of the members of the crew who seem to be on the go 24 hours a day. Everywhere you go on board you see someone with a cloth in their hand or a vacuum cleaner running it over another bit of carpet just because. The waiting staff, in the same way, are on the go from way before sun up to well after sun down. Breakfast starts at around 6am when there is an early start to the excursions which I would guess means someone is starting preparation by at least 4am, then as soon as breakfast is over they are then getting ready for snacks, then lunch, then afternoon tea (with proper Cornish Clotted Cream for the scones I must add, yummy, and there was enough for a gurt great dollop). Sorry got a bit carried away with that memory. They are then getting set up for dinner which starts at around 6pm and with 1800 very hungry passengers, many of whom who have been away from the ship on exhausting and hunger inducing excursions, so you can imagine the chaos with this and that is not the end of it for the catering staff as once they have finished with the dinner service they are then preparing food for the midnight snack bar which goes on till... actually I have no idea what time that finishes as the latest we went to this one was around 11.30pm and there were still plenty of people coming in after us. Then just a few short hours later it starts all over again for them. As far as the individual restaurants are concerned, here we go. The Snack Shack - our first experience of dining once we embarked on board. We were wandering around the ship trying to get our bearings and we came across this one and thought, why not. It has a cold frame with sandwiches, wraps, salads and fruit which you can help yourself to and then there is a serving counter where you can get fish and chips, burgers, hot dogs, etc and then the bar area for drinks. I will say the fish and chips were lovely and everyone else in our party were impressed with whatever they had. So good start, well done Snack Shack. Islands - I must be honest, we only ate in Islands a couple of times for breakfast and the 'Cornish Clotted Cream' afternoon teas but from what we could see it was good, wholesome buffet style food which looked tasty and hot. 47 Degrees - Again being honest, we tried to get in here on our first night on board requesting a table for 4. Well... we were told it was very busy and it would be about 30 minutes to get a table. How dreadful... NOT, when you consider that right next door to the restaurant is the Atrium bar where you can get a drink on the house... or was it on our All Inclusive package?!! Sorry, back to being serious now, we were given a buzzer and told that once they had sorted a table for us the buzzer would go off, which it did, but not 30 minutes later, it was about 15 minutes, what a service. We were welcomed at the door by two smiling hostesses who passed us on to the waiting staff who again had huge smiles on their faces and we were shown to our table. Waiter service? But I thought All Inclusive was always buffet style! Not on this ship, 47 Degrees is a fully waiter serviced restaurant where you get a proper fine dining experience of the waiter placing your napkin on your lap, immediately asking what you would like to drink, and I must add, as we had upgraded to the premium drinks package, this basically meant we could have whatever we wanted (too many good quality wines and spirits to list here, I would recommend the upgrade). The menu changes every day and always has a choice of 5 dishes in each of the starters, mains and deserts. The food was amazing, again I can't list all the fantastic dishes on the menu as, like I said they change the dishes every day. One dish I will mention though is Sticky Toffee Pudding. We met the Executive Chef, Carl, on the stairs one morning and I mentioned to him how much I really love Sticky Toffee Pudding. He told me that unfortunately this pudding was not on the menu for another two weeks. Obviously seeing how disappointed I was, three days later on our table at dinner when it came to the desert course he had made a Sticky Toffee Pudding just for me. Honestly! Everyone around was so jealous especially when I wouldn't share it. Actually I did let them all taste it, it was delicious. One of the best I have had, thank you Carl! The Glass House - We ate in here a couple of times for lunch where they did a mean sandwich, chips and salad which you ordered and was made fresh for you from the serving counter. We also had the midnight snacks in here a couple of times, where the curries were lovely and the burger and chips really do sit well at about midnight, or is that sit on your stomach well at about midnight. Not sure? Surf and Turf - You pay a supplement for this restaurant but then you do get to order some impressive steaks which are delicious and tender. As the name suggests they do a surf and turf option on the menu which, surprisingly, includes a steak and some lobster. Again, three courses and a fantastic wine selection which compliments all the different flavours and choices on the menu. One other thing is that all the waiters know which wines go well with which dishes so just ask if you're not sure. And also, again, it is fully waiter serviced where everything is done for you apart from actually eating the food. Kora La - Wow! Pan Asian in this restaurant. Again there is a supplement for this one but BOY is it worth it in here! In case you're wondering from the previous sentence, this was by far our favourite restaurant. The flavour combinations and taste sensations were far better than we ever expected them to be. We actually ate in here four times on our two week cruise in the end. Only planned to eat a couple of times in the supplement restaurants but this one was sooooo good we couldn't help ourselves. Right, on to the most important areas on the ship, the bars. Only joking we don't drink that much... at least not normally. The Atrium bar is a great focal point of the ship with the six floor high, sorry meant deck high, ceiling, an amazing sight and also with the singers, guitarists, saxophonists, pianists, etc there to entertain you while you relax and have a drink, it's great place to sit and chill out after a hard days sunbathing. Then there is the live Room where, as it says on the tin, there is live music played by the resident band, the pianist, or whoever the entertainment is at the time, while you order your drinks and relax. Next up is the Venue where again, surprisingly there is live music at various times and even, once weekly a karaoke evening. Even in the Broadway Theatre during the shows in the evening there are waiters coming round constantly taking your orders for drinks and bringing them right to your seats while you are watching the amazing West End standard shows on every night. In the day time there is a pool deck bar for drinks while you are lounging around the pool, you have a choice of either going to the bar yourself or just sitting or lying on your sunbed and order your drink from the waiting staff who are constantly walking around serving you. Even on the upper decks, the Veranda at the back of the boat, sorry, I mean ship, on the sunbeds around the mini golf course, around the climbing wall or just about anywhere you can find a space to sit or lie there is a crew member coming around taking your drinks order. Amazing! Then there is the Coffee Ports dotted around the ship where surprisingly they serve coffee and cakes and other bits. Every single person we came across who is there to serve you always has a smile on their face and is forever ready to provide you with whatever your stomach requires at the time. Fantastic! Now the entertainment. All the entertainers on board are well seasoned and experienced performers who are only not on the West End stage or performing in arenas because either they are not bothered to, prefer to be travelling the world on a cruise ship seeing all the sights for free, oh, and getting paid at the same time or maybe they just haven't been in the right place at the right time... yet! The guitarist, saxophonist, pianist and singers around the ship are amazingly talented but, again, (sorry, keep saying this) I must be honest with you all, for me the stars of the entertainment are the Broadway Show Team. They perform a different show every night of the two week cruise, only having one night off a week, so that's 12 different shows they have to learn with precision and perfection, learning the songs, the dances and lines for each different show. At our amateur dramatic society we take about six months to learn and perform one show, let alone 12 shows. My hats off to you guys, and each of the shows are amazing. Well, there are other things I could have added to this but I think it is probably time I went to bed and, basically typing with one hand is taking it's toll on me so I need to rest now. I hope this review hasn't been too long and boring for you but then if it was too long and boring for you then you wouldn't have read that last line so that was probably pointless putting that in but, never mind! See you all on our next cruise! Who knows, someone from Marella might see this and employ me to review one of their other ships. We can but dream! Read Less

Everything about the Marella Discovery 2 is exceptional - ship to its crew. From check in which was the fastest yet and well organised to Cabin allocation and facilites onboard. I loved every minute of the cruise. Our cabin 6001 was very quiet ( once you get used to the airconditioning ) great location. Isaac our cabin steward did a fantastic job keeping the cabin clean and tidy. Restaurants were great - waiting staff fast with service and friendly. Food always delicious and plentiful. Adult only area on the Veranda was nice and peaceful away from the frantic fun filled pool areas. Bar waiter came frequently to top up the drinks when needed. Ports - we explored on our own - hop on bus in Naples - scenic route was lovely for a change. Went to beach in Villafrance & Palamos - Olbia - walk around the town & market. Entertainment - Plentiful!! from quizs / kareoke / bands / comedian to nightly shows..Lots to do and see or just chill in the bar with the vaious musicians. Best ship for nightly entertainment.. Departure was again effortless and we were at the airport with lots of time before check in and in departure lounge in no time.. Flight was on time and back home by lunch time.. Fantastic memories were made - sad it had to end - looking forward to the next time! Read Less

Returned on 17th Aug 2019 from a 7 day cruise on Marella Discovery 2 on its Cosmopolitan Classics Cruise. This was our first cruise and Marella were recommended to us by a relative. Our flight was from Manchester airport scheduled for 12:50. Up on arrival at Manchester at 09:35 we joined a large queue at the TUI check in desks. There were only 2 desks open for all TUI flights that morning. WE slowly made our way through the queue only for all of us in the queue to be asked to move back whilst other flights took priority. No explanation was given by the TUI staff whose only comment was for us to go downstairs and have a coffee for at least half an hour. We all refused and just stood there beyond the barriers and were told that we had to move as we were blocking the fire exit. No one moved. We were all disgusted by the treatment we received from the TUI staff who did not seem to care or any customer service. We eventually were checked in at about 10:45. The flight was then delayed for approx. 45 minutes with the reason given that the baggage handlers were very slow at loading the aircraft. Manchester Airport is the “pits”. It is undergoing major refurbishment of the terminal 2 but will not be any better as it is still run by the worst management I have come across. It is run by the local Councils and needs to be privatised. Buffet restaurant. The good points – Plenty of choice of food, lovely views from the tables near the windows, plenty of seating/tables which were cleared very quickly by the staff. Drinks were self-service with a good choice. The bad points – Breakfast was the same every day and the bacon and sausages appeared to be very pale and undercooked. The fruit choice was also very limited and this was the only meal of the day that you could obtain a banana. Although there was a choice of food at lunch and dinner menu choices were themed foreign dishes which were cooked in sauces/herbs etc. There was no alternative choice of “plain food” with even the salad section having spices/oils on the lettuce. The fruit choice was very limited being mainly melon and pineapple. The hot “puddings” did not appeal to us as they did not look nice. The cakes were small and did not appear enticing and were the same choice every day. You were expected to use a plastic “glass” for water/ fruit juice. However although these were washed they appeared not to have been rinsed properly and therefor looked dirty and cloudy. They looked to be a health hazard to us and we therefore chose to use glasses instead where available. There is also a snack area on deck 9 where you can obtain what is described as “food on the go”. This consisted of mainly burgers/chips and sandwiches. The area stunk of burnt fat/oil and the sandwiches were the most unappetising that I have ever seen. You can eat in this area but it is directly next to a designated smoking area so you are subjected to cigarette smoke as you eat. Other free restaurants. The good points – 2 to choose from, one of which was sort of a general choice and the other a themed Italian menu. We did not use any of these as I do not eat Italian as I have a pasta allergy and the general themed restaurant menu consisted again of everything being cooked in sauces/herbs etc. Main pool. This was on deck 9. It is a small pool that is filled with filtered seawater. It was extremely busy and people were on sunbeds all around it. There was also a pool bar. There was a constant noise of either loud music or the entertainment team shouting through microphones and organising games. My impression was that it was like Butlin’s on sea but I soon revised this to Pontin’s on sea. It was dreadful. Bars. These were mainly situated on deck 4. They were adequately furnished and appeared OK but in the light of day the upholstery needed a good clean. Bar service was prompt and there was also waiter service. The glasses that drinks were served in were cloudy and appeared dirty. I lost count of the times I had to request a clean glass. There seems to be a problem with the dishwashing as it does not give a good finish to glassware. Although the bars were on deck 4 there were no toilets on this deck. You either had to go down 1 deck or up 2 decks for a toilet. This is very bad design and needs addressing. This is an old ship which was purchased second hand from Royal Caribbean and in my opinion is in need of modernisation and decent planning of facilities. At the end of the cruise all suitcases needed to be placed outside the cabin by 02:00 and cabins had to be vacated by 09:00. This is very bad and appears to be bad customer service. In this day and age with computer technology they should be able to stagger cabin vacation around flight times etc. There is no need for every cabin to be vacated by 09:00. Overall we enjoyed the cruise but would be very wary of booking another one with TUI. They seem to be aiming for the bottom end of the market both price and service wise. If we ever cruise again it will be with a more up market organisation. Read Less

We have been on 3 merella cruises before but this was the first cruise on the Merella Discovery 2. What a fabulous time we had from the moment we set foot on the ship in Palma . Secrets of the Mediterranean was brilliant, seeing Scilly, the Amalfi coast and Sardinia was great. The captain told us one day that we would be passing Capri and also the Bay of Naples in the distance and also around 10pm that night we also saw a live volcano erupting, something we will probably never see again. Everything was brilliant. The ship itself was so clean and always something to do. The food was fabulous and was plenty of choice in the different restaurants available. We had a balcony cabin, the first time we have had one and worth the extra. All the staff on the Discovery 2 were excellent but I would like to mention 3 in particular, Emily who kept our cabin 6544 impeccably clean and tidy and nothing too much trouble for her, always a smile. Thank you Emily. Alexander the barman/waiter in the Live room, always so helpful, couldnt please enough and remembered all our drinks. Thank you Alexander. Lastly Tamara in the Coffee Port, what a wonderful, socialable, lovely member of staff, always a smile and so helpful when we were trying to choose what to try each day. Thank you Tamara. Already looking for our cruise for 2020 and hopefully Discovery 2 again. Read Less

This was our second cruise on Discovery 2 and we rebooted the cabins we had last year. 6533 an inside cabin for our teenage boys. It's a really good inside cabin. Lots of storage and a small sofa in the room as well. 6534 balcony cabin again good size for two of us. Both kept tidy by our cabin steward. Deck 6 is a good position on the ship between the coffee port and the front stair cases and lifts. Whole ship was kept so tidy the staff all work hard and are great team. Bit of a shame that the entertainment was identical to the shows on last years cruise .....festivals....Simon & Garfunkle .......strictly.....but we watched them and enjoyed. Food. Everyone has different taste but the food here will not disappoint. We ate breakfast in the buffet each morning .....choices of continental ...full fry up....chef specials and omelettes or fruit. You can have it in 47 the main dining room if you wish. If on board lunch can be a quick snack or full blown meal the choice is there. We ate at the 2 waiter service restaurants in the evening's and paid supplement to eat in surf and turf.......gorgeous steak....a must try. We did go with tuxedo and long dress and so did quite a few fellow passengers. We visited ports and did a mix of on our own independent tours on foot and we booked some must see visits..i.e. Vatican and Sistine Chapel and Pompeii ....felt a bit let down with the Pompeii trip so definitely do you homework on what exactly Marella and selling the trip as. I would diy a trip next time. This was our third Marella cruise but the lack of change in itinerary is putting me off booking another. Read Less

Cruise was chosen to celebrate our 30th anniversary. It as our first cruise, but will not be the last. Full marks to Tui for providing a brilliant break. From start to finish, the whole experience went perfectly. Discovery 2 is a great ship, with excellent cabins and onboard facilities, and a crew who never stopped smiling. All of them were friendly and polite, helpful and considerate, especially Veronica and Jonny, our cabin stewards. We were Premium All Inclusiv, no fuss over what to have, and so much easier with the cashless system. The foo, throughout our trip was excellent, tasty and of a variety never experienced before. The restaurants/bars etc. were plentiful and well staffed, never long before you were served. Ports visited were well chosen, particularly liked, Ajaccio, Civiviteccia, St. Raphael and Barcelona. Loved every minute of it. The Spa was frequented often, a refuge rom poolside, with acupuncture, very beneficial from Sarah. Read Less

Absolutely fantastic first cruise. I Love Marella Discovery 2, in my opinion the perfect size ship for our first experience, not overwhelmingly big but still with lots of choice and plenty of things to do. The Crew went above and beyond for us. The Food was fantastic and the entertainment was incredible. I travel with a wheelchair and was worried about getting about but the crew were so helpful, the weather was rough on the first day and I struggled but there was always someone on hand to help. I even got table service in the self service restaurant so that I didn’t have to carry anything. The cabin was very comfortable and the chocolate on our pillow every evening a lovely touch. We only had a week and there was so much that I didn’t get to try, too much to fit into one week. I Can’t wait to book again. TUI excursions were very well organised and the guides very informative. We stuck with the basic all inclusive package and this still gave plenty of choice. Thank you Captain and crew. Read Less

We were a group of four - a 50+ couple travelling with our 14 year old son and my 80+ mother (with limited mobility). We selected two, back to back 7 day cruises making a figure 8 from Palma de Mallorca around Portugal, Spain, Italy and Southern France. We chose the ship and Marella (Tui) because it went where we wanted to go when we were able to go - we haven’t cruised with Marella before. First - some shout outs to the exceptional service from our cabin staff - led by Faiden - who looked after us all with great care throughout our fortnight. We particularly enjoyed the e-bike excursions led by Niko and Ashleigh - they led us through the sights and the beaches of Portimao, Corsica and St Raphael. We also used some of the coach based excursions- which were comfortable and as expected. We appreciated the peace of mind of all inclusive drinks - the upgrade was not necessary- and saw no evidence of it being abused by our fellow passengers. We were keen patrons of the coffee port, where we always enjoyed friendly service from Tamara. We ended up consistently using the Islands buffet for meals, for the pure convenience and because we tended to be earlier to rise and to bed than most, so that we tended to want our meals earlier than the other restaurants opened. We had breakfast a couple of times in the waiter service 47 degrees dining room - and it was a better experience. Islands certainly has a variety of food, but it has to be said that some of it was not very tasty - which is probably an inevitable consequence of the cooking methods required to produce food on that scale. Nonetheless we opted for convenience and there was usually something memorable on our plate each night. We frequently used the gym and adjoining spa/sauna services which were well equipped and set up. We preferred the Glass house indoor pool area which was quieter and cooler than the main pool area. In summary, the cruise delivered the experience we had hoped for with some of the staff making it that little bit better than we had expected. Read Less

We went with two other couples and had a fabulous time. The food is top quality (as an Irish person, mashed potatoes and custard in the Buffet style restaurant a good yardstick and both were well above par demanding a second visit) and are staff very quick to clear empty plates so no messy tables. Plenty of choices for adults and kids. Visited the 47 restaurant for waiter service evening meal and again fab food and very attentive service. Entertainment was some of the best talent I’ve seen. Lots of entertainment areas to suit all tastes throughout the day and evening. Spa therapists provide a variety of treatments and are very good at providing a relaxing treatment. Just mind you don’t slip into purchasing too many products as they have a way of convincing you you need them. Staff on board were always friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this ship Read Less

I chose this cruise ship for our pearl wedding it had been fantastic two years ago. I never thought I would be hungry on a cruise ship but I was the two meals We had in the restaurant were horrendous. The waiter did not know our name like the Tui advert he barely knew our table as he rushed round serving new and present guests. Staff are thin on the ground and we found ourselves queuing at the bar for the culled premium list. Entertainment is repetitive hardly any live music by the pool just the same music like Belinda Carlisle played over and over day in day out. Some of the staff looked so tired and miserable it made me feel guilty. The drunks falling over tables and on the dance floor Sb refused drinks when they have lost capacity. Back to the cabin to Fred flint stone pillows I usually cry with sadness when I leave a Tui cruise this time I cried with joy. Read Less
