First cruise and I was terrified due to negative reviews on here. Our review...well we are now hooked....an amazing cruise. We ate everywhere...enjoyed it all. The ships crew are constantly cleaning to keep the ship presentable. The entertainment is amazing. Attend as much as possible. All incredibly enjoyable especial the Maquee live shows. Entertainment crew hilarious Mathew Dom Pablo Miguel etc. We had the smaller cheaper cabins which were perfect for our budget and needs....hot showers were amazing. Many reviews complained about the interior being old....well I'm no spring chicken either any more but it's how you present yourself and this ship is no different....the decor is gorgeous. We did a few pacific Islands and pre booked our tours through the ship and had a great time being emersed in the culture and saw some amazing scenery. All our kids 3-17 attended kids clubs Turtle cove HQ and HQ+ and loved it experience. We also had EDGE packages. These were prepaid great for 7-25yrs. Our adults would probably pay per session next time as didn't get the value from pre purchasing. Thankyou from the bottom of our hearts for your passion to serve. Sad to see you retiring but hope to travel again with P&O and see some familiar faces. Read Less

Everything went perfectly on the cruise, went on a 7 night from melbourne around australia. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was excellent and was worth the money. We had a balcony cabin, Our cabin was abit tight but thats probably because i didnt know what to expect. The dining was perfect, weather it was the free buffet or the fine dining restaurants. The entertainment was really good. Didnt expect so much but was really happy. There was never a dull moment. Either in the day shows or the adult comedy shows or even sitting at a bar having a few drinks. I went with my partner and i advise couples to get the ultimate romance package. Very good value. The shore tours are good but have to book them in advance to get a good one and be prepared. But once again i cant stress enough the great service from all staff. Thank you guys so much for the wonderful journey Read Less

Embarking from Port Melbourne ,fantastic ,as was Disembarking..So fast.Cabis old but cannot compalin as it was comfortable and only spend part of time there.Always cleaned and room cleaning people such as Prince and Mary very good on Deck 10 evens. Food is disgusting ,All Asian and Indian ,everything has flavouring ,even baked beans,,,,,,,,,Chicken ,ham and beef etc always dry,,given a few more days ,you could light it up with match as it is very dry. Had to go to bar outside of PANTRY to get orange juice even though there was abar in the PANTRY. then we had to queue up outside at bar where Pool is to get an orange drink ,but P and O made sure plenty of alcohol available in PANTRY.,,No Mocktails,,It seems that the P and O mob want us to live on watered down alcohol drinks. No bodt coming around to ask if we wanted drinks when we were in the PANTRY,,COFFEE is so gross,Better coffee available at Service Stations better than this RUBBISH, Same old problem with TABLES,Have to have someone sit at table while partner goes to get small meal then the one at table has to go and get something over and over again,,,,WHY aren't there Trays so we can put 2 meals on it and save not being able to have meal with each other,,,,,,,,,,,,Staff always overworked but very good at jobs. laundry, you have to have Australian dollars to use Washing machine and Dryer,$3 for washing machine ,$3 for dryer, which you get dollar coins from Level 5..Detergent machines not working,Have to go to level five for a $1 packet. Feel sorry for staff there as they are doing great job with we passengers and extra work load,Artists in longes played same music every day of cruise,Cant they learn different songs ? Mathew and other guy doing trivia etc very good, bingo expensive and no one to show how to play it.No body at hand cleaning stations to make sure people disinfected Hands at events,,,,,,,,,,,,Just lucky no Virus going through ship.Staff at Waterfront very good ,but menu repeated over and over again.Staff wonderful there.TOURS,some not worth it especially the one at akaaroa where you go to hilltop pub, Pies etc cold when the Tour bus arrives and pastry items have to be warmed up,,WHy no Baimarie there at Pub,they know buses coming,Wated time there.Wellington Tour also disappointment,,Went to Look out and spent short time there and then went to Botanical garden Rose Garden,,,,,Jus a eating place and coffee place then just few minutes to see the small garden,NOT WORTH PAYING FOR.,The train trip through gorge pretty good.as is walking tour in Hobart, on our Hobart ticket ,it said to go through Terminal and go outside to meeting point,No one there.Tour guides decided to have people meet in the TErminal and no signage to let people know where new meeting area was,Considering tours are not free from P & O ,there should be a better system,Just a Pole and sign naming Tour would suffice. If doing Tours ,find some one who has done them before as you will be disappointed some times.,,,,,,,No seating in the various some times so have to stand up.............P & O seems to be Alcohol oriented and not interested in non drinkers...........Emergency Medical of patient occurred,Announcement over PA went over and over again ,took a long time for Emergency Team to arrive to level 11.The patient had to be airlifted to Helecopter,The Captain crew and Helecopter crowd fantastic doing this job,..........Standard of P & O gone down as some of Photo people arguing with Cruisers and wrong information given by Tour manager at Marquee, and they argue about iD required even though announcement says what is required,,,,,,So few thing required by P & O to make Cruise more enjoyable but it seems that P & O believe that we will cruise with them and accept what they dish up.........We are not Asian so please put more European food in Main dining room, Seriously ,the food is disgusting,,,,,,,More Pasta etc would be great but get away from Asian food ,So much waste when people cannot eat it. ,,,,,,,,pHOTOS bad systm.photos not discounted and supposedly P & O do recycling and proud of it........Seems strange that all Chemicals and paper gone into printing photos then the unwanted photos shredded,Would be better to sell photos very cheap and have photos bought then shredded,I Dining area ,there are high Stools and benches for people,Too high for Kids and people with hip problems..Just a matter of time when somebody falls from these stools. We have been on Princess and P & O before but would not go with them again and would not recommend P & O to anyone now,Pacific Dawn was great many years ago,,, as I have mentioned ,P & )O taking us for granted,,,,,,,,,we went on tour of Galley,We followed the guy down escalator ,kept walking up escalator then through, revolving door,,and back into Waterfront restaurant.no signage or explanation of how galley works or of amount of food consumed of galley tour,Not a word spoken Read Less

We did this cruise to escape the winter in New Zealand. We are a middle aged couple. We have no children. This was our second cruise. The first was last year on Queen Victoria and going along the adriatic coast. This one was cruising around Fiji and Tonga. We enjoyed the ship itself. We ate more often in the Waterfront restaurant as we preferred being waited on. The service was good and so were the meals. The shows were fantastic. The seven sins was memorable. I bought the $199 entertainment package. Which included salt and grill meal. a bottle of champagne. Photo, Canapes every night. This deal was worth it. Salt and grill is fantastic. We couldn't eat it all. I had bought the wine and cheese package and the wine and fruit package. The shock was in finding that they were delivered all at once. Not spaced out over 10 days. I had bought water bottles to 6 for $20 and water is important. We didn't book any excursions. My experience last year in Europe was that they are expensive and not always what you want to do in an area. Our call at Suva..was entertaining to get on the bus there when you did not have too. You could walk off there and be in a shopping district. I got bored as although the market was interesting you can't take food on board. So I was about to go back to the ship when a taxi driver approached and offered to take me around the island for 2 hours for $40 NZ. Deal done. It was a good trip too. We did a similar thing in capital of Tonga. There the taxi drivers expect to be paid $200 US dollars so we bypassed them. We found to our couples and shared the expense of a taxi around Tonga and that was worth it. We saw all the sights. Captain Cook landing and Abel Tasman and more. My husband got sick on the way back from Tonga. He started having breathing problems. He was in the hospital on the ship. They gave him the best of care there. He had water of the lungs and heart failure. Now recovering back in NZ. It was $12,000 for 36 hours care. It has to be paid before you leave the ship. Waiting to hear from insurance. This was caused by a couple of infections. Still my experience is still positive with the ship. I will be back on this ship for the food and wine and the comedy one coming up. Read Less

Just to preface this review, we had previously cruised on the P & O Pacific Dawn 8 months ago out of Brisbane (Balcony room) on the 7 night Island Hopper and could not fault anything. It was brilliant. This time we chose to splash out on a Mini Suite and convinced our parents to try a cruise for the first time. So they booked a Suite too. We sailed on an 8 nighter to Fiji. From day 1 we couldn't sleep. We had the pleasure of having bins and loungers and various other items stored directly above our room on 12. It was SO noisy. You could hear constant thumping, people running, chairs scraping. Sometimes late at night and every single morning like clockwork just before 6am. During the day it was too noisy to take a nap. Our Room Stewards were nice but a little inefficient. We had to repeatedly ask for beach towels as after shore days we would leave them in the beach towel bins when coming back to the ship. We'd get back to our room to freshen up and then go up to 12 to swim or lounge around and we'd have to wait for 2 more towels. They should have just done them when they serviced our room each day. Also our room was only serviced in the afternoon so often there were plates outside our door for hours at a time. Despite us getting up and out at 6am lol. Bed was comfy though! Food was atrocious. Pantry had cockroaches running around where you get the sauces etc. Same food day in and day out. I don't think we ever had a warm meal either in the Pantry or Waterfront. It was constantly served cold or lukewarm. Even eggs being carried in from the kitchen and put directly on my plate were cold! And if you ordered any meat it was cooked so much that if you dropped it, it would have bounced from being over cooked! Waterfront was awful. However service there was fab. My parents are not fussy people and were seriously disappointed in the food, as were we. Their room on the other side of the ship than us, was under where chairs were moved every morning at 3am for over an hour so they didn't sleep well either. Oh and their A/C was faulty, then freezing, then didn't work at all, despite having someone come and look at it. The cocktails were so hit and miss it was not even worth having a drinks package, some were so gross and varied tremendously depending on who made them. One day I drank 5 Toblerone Cocktails in a short period of time and didn't even feel tiddly. It was like I had just drunk 5 chocolate shakes from McDonalds. The attitude of some of the staff members was quite indifferent. You'd be standing waiting for service at the bar and they'd take their time to even acknowledge you. Also the wait staff couldn't be found half the time to take your drink order so we gave up and just went to the bar ourselves. There were hardly any activities either. We resorted to trying to borrow a book from the library. But unlike the Dawn where it was an unlocked cupboard, the Jewel had a locked cupboard. So we'd go to this cupboard at the time advised but there would be no staff member in sight. This happened many many times. We left the book we actually managed to get at reception before disembarking because the person at the library was so unreliable. The music that they played repeatedly in the public areas (Pantry etc) drove us mad. The same few songs played over and over. As in like 5 songs. If I hear Katy Perry's 'Roar' again I will scream. Bad remakes of top 10 hits. Every day and night. We think they did it so people had their food and got out immediately. The music selection they had on the big screen on 12 was rubbish and inappropriate and SO loud we had to yell to each other so we could have a conversation. Kids were swimming in the Adults pool and nobody told them to get out. We retreated to the Oasis bar quite a bit but it stunk like an unwashed floor in the corner of a dodgy old Dim Sum restaurant and we got sick of having to get up off a lounger to get a drink as the waiter was more fond of chatting to passengers for long periods of time than taking drink orders. I could go on and on. It was SO blah. I just feel so gutted after our previous cruise being so great! What is P & O doing? My parents are never doing another cruise with P & O and we will not cruise on the Jewel again UNLESS it was free. lol. I contacted P & O with my feedback but haven't heard a word. Didn't expect to really. Go on this ship if you got your cruise at a bargain basement price, if your room is not on level 11, if you are with a bunch of people and you are going to be drinking and partying with so it doesn't matter if you sleep or not. If you want a relaxing time with great food, some tasty cocktails, excellent service and some quality sleep - give it a miss on the Jewel. Read Less

We did 9 nights on the Pacific jewel to the south pacific. We had a great time! It was a great affordable holiday! The service was fantastic, the ship was very nice and well looked after. The live entertainment every night was excellent. The included in fare food was a bit hit and miss but good the majority of the time. The onboard restaurants we paid extra for were delicious! Well worth the money. We also got the premium drinks package and I think that is definitely a must do! As you don't have to worry about paying for drinks, you just swipe your cruise card. I think the experience you have on board is alot to do with your attitude, we went on with a positive attitude, not really knowing what to expect from our first cruise and we were pleasantly surprised with our trip. We will definitely be sailing with P&O again. Read Less

This was our first cruise (me and my partner). So a lot of things were new to us. For example, we were completely unaware of the credit card hold. Both of our credit cards were blocked because of repeated holds (NAB) and we could not access it from NZ on our entire holiday, even though we both notified our banks we will be going on a cruise to NZ. Embarkation was a bit confusing, since none of the staff seemed to know what a Resident Return Visa is and had to make me stand there so that they ask around. Disembarkation was smooth, no issues there. The ship itself was nice, considering its our first cruise. The pools were nice and big, except there were kids in the no kids area the whole time. The bar staff everywhere was nice, as were the restaurant staff. Ours was a comedy cruise, so we had a lot of back to back shows. Except that they were on repeat, some of them were the same jokes twice a day. The overall activities on the boat was ok, there were rum tasting tours for a price, which my partner liked. And there were a lot of passenger engaging activities too which we enjoyed. The cabin was spacious, but the window was unclean from the outside and the toilet kept getting clogged. Dining was nice, plenty of options. The pizzeria was ok too. We had fun at the Gatsby party, the music and cocktails were fun. We are altogether ok with this. Maybe we wont travel with p&o again unless it has a good offer, but we might wanna try out other ships. However, our main concern was the service desks. It was awfully short staffed from what it seemed like. We waiting for a while just to get service, and we had to wait some more because the lady had an urgent phone call she got from some other customer. Half way through serving us, she got engaged on the phone again. We were concerned about some charges on our bill, and in the end we got so frustrated from waiting that we left to disembarked and decided to call P&O later to sort this out. Read Less

Having sailed on the Paciifc Dawn out of Brisbane last year, we wanted to save travel costs and sail from our home port in NZ. Cruise departed from Akl and have to say embarkation was much simplier and efficient in Auckland. Disembarkation was just as painless. We had a balcony suite 10176 and was in a great spot on the ship never had any trouble with noise. Was very happy with the dining, while we spent most of our dining time in the waterfront, on the occasione we used the pantry we were very happy with the food selection. Also dined at Salt Grill on night of Gatsby party, food was fantastic and thouroughly enjoyed the very professional service from the staff who were also very accomodating when one of our party fell ill ( sea sickness). Gatsby night was a winner yet again. My only critique would be of the entertainment staff, didnt feel the same vibe and happy involvement from the crew as we did on the Dawn. Also felt the quality of bands and singers not quite at the level of those on th Dawn, with the exception of Lisa Crouch who was phenonmenal. We we all very pleased that they gave her a second show which was packed out. Service staff are the best and go out of their way to be of great service to all. As stated by others the Jewel is in need of an update as she is looking a bit tired, look forward to sailing on her again when she has a refit. Loved every port we went to, did not do any ship tours but arranged our privately. Off to cruise expo this weeknd to book the next cruise. Read Less

We did the 8 night Taste of New Caledonia from 17/8/17 to 25/8/2017. Sydney, Noumea, Mare and Isle of Pines. Negatives: 1. Docked into Noumea on a Sunday and all shops were closed, except for a couple of little markets. You should not schedule Noumea or any major port for a Sunday. 2. Could not dock at Mare as we were told the swells were too rough for the little boats to carry us to the port. I think this needs to be investigated. We were later told that P&O doesn't like to pay taxes for docking early and that was the real reason. 3. The ship is old and smelly. It smelled like sewerage. Other passengers were complaining too. We later found out that it was going to be decommissioned. Positives: The staff were amazing as usual. All the wait staff, people cleaning our rooms and all the restaurant staff are all wonderful. This was the best part of our cruise. Entertainment was great too! :) As 'Mare' was part of our package, I wonder if we could get that portion of our cruise $$ back? P.S. We will not be doing P & O again. Read Less

Was a bit worried after reading a few negative reviews for the Pacific Jewel. We booked a 9 night cruise to the South Pacific islands during the school holidays. From the minute we got on to the minute we got off, we had a great time. The ship is in excellent condition, nice decor and very clean. Service from the staff on board was terrific. Our cabin steward, Sanjay, was very attentive and kept our cabin ship shape! The waiters were very polite and gave great service. There is so much entertainment on board that you can choose to do or not to do. Our cabin was great. A lot of hanging space with hangers and loads of drawers. The dining areas were excellent, from the Waterfront Restaurant to The Pantry, food was excellent. We ate at Luke Mangin's Salt Grill, and had to pay for this, but was so worth it. $49 per head for an amazing 3 course meal.I would recommend it highly. Entertainment was very good and plenty of it. All I can say if someone goes on this ship and does not have a great time or experience, it would be their own fault! Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise as I got a really great deal from Cruise Sale Finders for a 10N Mini-Suite + free Bev Package and $100 cabin credit. We hadn't been on a cruise for 9 years and thought it was about time to 'set sail' on a much needed holiday. I chose a time in the year that wasn't during school holidays as we wanted an 'adult break'. We've been on a few cruises in the past (Dawn/Sun). Positives: - Embarkation was so smooth as we were treated like VIPs as we had a Mini-suite so it took no time at all to board and our bags were delivered within an hour of boarding! Wow! - The cabin was fantastic and the cabin stewards were amazing (thanks Mae and Edi) - Only entertainment we loved was Steady Eddy - brilliant and funny but only had one show - Quad bike/Zego tour in Port Vila was awesome, except our Zego kept breaking down - Disembarkation was smooth as well, of and out within 15 mins - The island ports were amazing - MysteryIs was awesome as usual, Lifou was lovely and Isle of Pines was spectacular. Noumea was grubby as ever, expensive and unattractive but the shore tour to Anse Vata was worth the trip - lovely beach and delicious pastries Negatives: - Service was very slow, sometimes hard to find bar staff to serve you - Service staff always ignored you when walking past. Only people that acknowledge you were the crew in uniforms and a few of the table cleaners in The Pantry - they were lovely - Entertainment was terrible. D-grade entertainers, boring and even some of the bands playing around the ship were not very entertaining - The Jewel needs a face lift as the furniture, decor and smell is OLD, like from the 80's and is desperately asking for a revamp - Some toilets kept breaking down so limited places to use - Food option were boring, bland, tasteless and not a lot of fun options for a vegetarian - Desert options were boring and were always small little sponge cakes with cream - Kids were always hogging the spa's. All The Time!! There was only 2 and there was always 5-7 kids in them every day! So I never actually got in the spa! Overall: My husband and I love P&O and will try a different P&O ship but won't go on the Jewel unless it gets a massive upgrade. I'm looking forward to see what the Explorer can offer, so watch out P&O we might be coming back soon. Read Less

First cruise for both my husband and I. I googled a lot of reviews prior to going and found a lot of negative comments, so I was a bit worried. I found the ship amazing. I think the life jacket talk could have been done a lot better, it was very congested all together and couldnt hear properly due to everyone talking!! The majority of staff were absolutely wonderful. Our cabin steward "Ryan" was amazing and very attentive. The cabin was always clean. We ate at "Salt", "Waterfront" and the Pantry. I found other guests quite rude and obnoxiuos which put a dampener on the trip eg one 20 ish year old clicking fingers and "yo ing" for service,,, how rude, would you do that at your local club or restaurant? I also found the larger groups of people took over the ship, not allowing for others to join them, when clearly there were empty seats around them. I also heard a lot of passengers whinging about anything and everything... When moving back to the cabins, people should also be more courteous to other passengers and not have loud conversations and pushing and shoving each other into walls and doors!!! We booked 2 tours, one was cancelled due to insufficient numbers, however there are a lot of tour options once you get off the ship and many are a lot cheaper than what P&O offer. Santo and Port Vila were our favourite ports, locals were very friendly and they rely on the cruiseships coming in. Great places to see. Noumea was ok, although quite commercialised compared with the other ports. We met some really nice people on the ship and have become good friends. I think I would do another cruise with P & O as I could not fault the staff at all, just hope that we travel with guests who are not rude, loud and obnoxiuos. Read Less

Just returned from a 11 night cruise to PNG onboard the Pacific Jewel in cabin 10247. We have been on quite a few different ships from various cruise lines and I must say that we do not nitpick about very minor problems but take notice of the larger ones. Our overall rating for this being our first P & O cruise would be a generous 4 / 10. The Good. Embarkation and dis-embarkation was a lot smoother than anticipated as it all went very well with no major delays. People must remember that 2000+ generally want to get on and off at the same time, so some delays are inevitable. Plenty of room in the shower to actually dry yourself in the shower without having to move outside. The Pantry - a very good concept with individual food stations.( see also The Bad). Seating is not crowded and has lots of different styles of seating, a lot with lounge style padding, very comfy. The Lido pool bar - great selection of local and international beers. We both had a free Premium Beverage Package from our travel agent which saved us a total of $1518 which paid for the wife's shopping and spa bill. Very good service from all the bar staff in all the bars which we frequented often. The boat being a older type and smaller size was surprisingly very smooth with very little lateral movement. The Oasis - children free area at the Aft on deck 11 & 12. Used quite often for peace and quiet ( see The Bad) The Bad. The balcony cabins seem to be a bit smaller than we have had before. The balcony's are very small in width, just barely enough room for two small plastic chairs a one small round plastic table which had to be moved every time you wanted to open the door. The hot water in the shower whilst it was generally plenty in pressure, the temperature kept fluctuating from warm to very hot which was annoying. The entertainment was generally very poor, from no sail away in Sydney and PNG with either no music on the lido deck or it was very loud to being annoying. The Adults only pool being used by screaming kids most of the day even though there was a Children's Security person monitoring them, thank god for the Oasis. Whilst the Pantry was a good conception. the variety of food tendered to be on the boring side after 11 nights, generally the same every meal, would have to go on a diet on a longer cruise. The Ugly. While PNG was somewhat different to visit, the options onshore were very limited with not much to see and do, the P & O excursions costing around $100 each for 2 hours to see a local dance. Our new kettle was confiscated as only thermostatic controlled induction heaters were only allowed onboard, we were always were allowed on Princess, HAL and NCL but not P & O. I enjoy a cuppa first thing in the AM but had to get dressed to go to the Pantry for my caffeine hit. Generally the overall condition of the ship is pretty sad and is well overdue to a major overhaul. Would we cruise with P & O again, probably not, because as at the moment we are spoilt with amount of larger ships sailing from OZ Read Less

As first time cruisers we were excited yet filled with trepidation - what to take , what to wear, theme nights , how much to allow for spending money. The usual questions that newbies would ask - but the info we got back from people varied on which company you go with. So lets cut to the chase- This is P & O - Pacific Jewel - South Pacific cruise. Drinks package? $79 or $89 a day each - If you are on a long cruise with lots of stops maybe not worth it - Drinks cost $7.50 for Crown lagers and Blonde - $8 for a Peroni beer or a Gin and Tonic - Wine is $9 a glass Most cocktails are $11.50 but some are $16.50 each and not covered by the drinks package. Wine for the table or In Room service - from $39 (cheapest) to- $55 and above. On embarkation we queued up for over an hour- only to get to the front of the queue and get sent to the back as we did not have 2 passenger Outgoing cards for immigration that a guide was handing out - - After getting them filled in we started embarkation - I found several of the P & O "guides":- all elderly citizens - offensive and rude. And thats before we started the cruise. Not a good sign . We got on board reasonably easy after that and went to our cabin where our cases were waiting. We unpacked then excitedly clambered to the main deck to do the "Sail Away" from Sydney - it was spectacular , if a bit chilly - as we would expect in August. The PUSHY overbearing photographers were eager to get shots of everyone - they were annoying to say the least. DRESS CODE- Well you are advised each day whether it is Smart Casual or Formal - It did not stop those who insisted on wearing blue shorts singlet and thongs to dinner - THe GYM The gym equipment is antiquated and outdated - It was enough to keep you fit I guess though. We dressed for dinner and found you had to book if you wanted the Waterfront restaurant, so we went to the Pantry- Trying to get a seat - that's a battle in itself. The minute you get up to get a coffee or a dessert your seats are taken. The Pantry serves up SHOPPING CENTRE style food - although I find that shopping centre food tastes better - While there is plenty to eat and plenty to choose from it is unseasoned and tasteless; I understand that most people do not like spicy food and that salt and pepper may be bad for many cruisers as they are on medication . The Waterfront served up a la carte menu - which changed daily - or a Theme menu- Greek one night Swedish the next or Italian etc The two other restaurants - Luna Asian ($29 P.P) We went to Luna twice - first was Japanese- sensational 15 course banquet, then the same 5 nights later for a Thai taste banquet, Both meals were great value, but Luke Mangans SALT GRILL at $49 p.p .with $2 surcharge per each oyster or prawn - whilst the serves were large, which I was not expecting, the food was average pub grade. The signature crab omelette was undercooked with runny egg inside - The eye fillet steak had gristle all over the outside that had not been removed. The best part of the meal was the red wine Jus .The cheese platter looked good when brought to the table but the cheeses were sweaty and the Brie was gooey from where it had been left out and not stored properly. Shore tours are all extra- Try booking them BEFORE getting on the boat - search TripAdvisor reviews for great trips.- we met several people who had organised private tours in Noumea and Port Vila and they had a great time. So easy to do too. We decided to order a bottle of wine and 2 beers to have on the balcony room we had paid for so we could enjoy the sail away from Port Vila- but the In Room Service person refused to let us have it as it was "not responsible service of alcohol" . Why have In room Service offering champagne beers brandys and wine but refuse to serve it ?? Its ok to serve the alcoholics beer at 7.30 am for breakfast but not us . P & O What a Cock up - so much so the F & B manager came to personally apologise- But that moment on our cruise was lost , we will never get it back again. Now - I know P & O don't control the weather. Out of Sydney 7 days straight - 2 hours of sun then 7 days of Gale Force winds , rain, and Huge seas - This meant that most of the deck activities were limited or cancelled - The two tiny pools became wave pools - so they put nets over them to stop usage - The famed Edge zipline became too dangerous to use on more than several days. This left the main entertainment as the shows ( if you can get in ) the cinema- but as that was on the open deck unlike other boats apparently - so no point enjoying a movie on a cold rainy windy night. Then there was bingo or knitting and quilting classes or ballroom dance lessons, or just eat and drink till you drop. For those who will remember this reminded me of Butlins or Pontins holiday camps As you wander past the hallways and urinals filled with vomit and the sick bags hanging on every stairway handle you wonder why you bothered. I could go on - but it was the cruise from hell -some liked it - and as we disembarked in Fiji to fly home 7 days into the cruise , along with a bunch of others who felt the same- we heard the snide remarks from those who stayed on board, but they were the fat ones gorging sausages bacon and eggs and croissants and cakes down their throats to ensure they got their moneys worth of food. Each crew member is designated to "Sell" so much per cruise, and they oversell and upsell at every opportunity, making out they are your best friends , hoping you will buy. After spending over $1000 on "bargain" massages and facials etc I realised that it is all Oversell at all costs. Good job we never bought the Orthotics that go in your shoes that the personal fitness guy was pushing ---Thought you had to go to Uni to be a Podiatrist P & O must stand for PIRATES And OUTLAWS I thought Piracy had been outlawed on the high seas.! I chose this cruise as my partner didn't have a passport but we wanted some sun, this was my third cruise one previously on Pacific Dawn and the other on Dawn Princess. In comparison I was not impressed, the Jewel was a smaller ship to the Dawn and it clearly is a 3 star experience. The ship is in need of an update and the cabins, whilst clean, are functional. We had an ocean view room, I didn't miss the balcony as it was quite windy so I'm not sure we would have used it much, I didn't on previous cruises. The dining on board wasn't too bad. The Good: The Salt Grill was exceptional, plenty of food and great service, we went twice it was that good, the second time for lunch which is the same menu but $10 cheaper. The Luna was good but I wouldn't rave about it and I'm not sure it was worth the $30 cover maybe $20-25. The Pantry had a good selection for breakfast and lunch but as you are now served (helps stop the spread of germs) then you get what you are given and sometimes there was a wait at lunchtimes for items. The Waterfront was pretty good we had a good selection and got lots of extra sides if we asked. My only complaint is that you have to pay for burgers and pizzas and that the food stops at 9:30 - if you want a late night snack or coffee or cake you have to pay/order room service. Entertainment on the ship was ok, some acts the comedian and mentalist were really good the crew shows less so. It seems there is a full itinery but there are card & deck games and bingo so it looks like there is more than there is. One issue was the Dome nightclub closed at 1:30am (we are on holiday people) we asked and were told it was the discretion of the bar staff and if there were more than 20 they could stay open later - it seemed that if you were on a drinks package they weren't making any more money so decided to close and give the staff an early minute. Also, the english DJ wouldn't pay rock or australian songs (on an australian ship!) Theme nights - it was hard to do bianco (white) for men - Gatsby was good - back to school not so much! Another formal or cocktail night would have been better. Service was mixed - either really good or really bad, waiters and bar staff were friendly, cabin staff less so (though others had good experiences) any problems were always someone else's problem when we complained. Tenders - this was our main complaint - as per another review, they had 4 tenders stating there was a swell - there were people kayaking - there was no swell! People took ages to get off the boat as P&O didn't use catamarans as much as they could (we were told it was receptions issue) - so lots of people were unhappy that they couldn't spend as much time onshore due to the delays getting off the ship.More use of catamarans would help get people off the ship quicker and with less issues. Ports/excursions - fave place was Airlie Beach and Mooloolaba - Gladstone was a waste of time, nothing there but a few shops and a bit of a market, only plus was no tenders! Other bad - P&O want your money - spa was overpriced and so were photos if they charged a reasonable price it would encourage spending. People we met had a drinks package too and they stopped them drinking at one point and then banned him from drinking before 5pm - I've never seen that on a ship where you pay for individual drinks - so I found this unacceptable when our friend wasn't causing issues. Clearly P&O are happy to take your money up front but don't like it when you do drink. Overall, we had a great holiday but that was due to the people we met and not because P&O ensured we did. This was our first cruise so we did not know what to expect. We were met at our cabin by the stewards who were very friendly and looked after us all the cruise. The food experience was very much what I would have expected and there was sure plenty of it to choose from. The entertainment was sure laid on for those who enjoyed it. We were happy with the entertainment. There was plenty of onshore entertainment to choose from the only place that we found did not do much for us was Moreton Island as we could not afford the activities so we returned to the ship and rested. For us this was the main reason we went on the cruise to relax. This may have been our first cruise but it sure wont be our last one. We both love the Pacific Jewel and the crew were all very friendly and helpful Read Less

This is my third visit via P & O to the South Pacific and the destinations were the calling card along with a great price. Talked into it by my travel agent at the last minute, hence the price, but the South Pacific is a wonderful place to go. Our Ship the Pacific Jewel at 70,000 gross tonnes, is not small and provides many activities and entertainment /dining options. I will dispense with list as P & O obviously have that info for you on their website etc. Pros & Cons together then: The embarkation ( of 2,000 of us) was handled with efficient ease from check in to gangway, and long as you have yourself organised , its easy to do. Cabin was clean tidy and welcoming , ocean view forward location. Cabin Steward was helpful and obliging. Theme nights were not widely advertised pre cruise so wing it there, and maybe do your homework with your TA. This cruise had the unexpected feature of being a wedding cruise for the brother ( and soon to be sister in-law) of the cruise director , romantic to many , but the said Cruise Director , Sandy, laid it on thick and loud and brash. Selling carpets previously I suspect. If he yelled 'BINGO' on the ships PA system one more time... anyway, the wedding was apparently nice and took the place of the Captains Cocktail Party evidently, as it wasn't held this time, senior hospitality staff informed me. Food quality varied each day from below average to very good in The Pantry ( cruise included dining) . The Waterfront ( five star dining) cuisine was excellent. The eminent arrival of Cyclone Winston while we were in the area, caused a change to our itinerary which was Mystery Island to become Champagne Bay Espirto Santo. I took the independent tours on shore at Noumea & Vantuau as these are cheaper and more personal. First time cruisers might want to take ship booked shore tours as a up front try. If your adventurous , save your money. The Islands of New Caledonia & Vanuatu are beautiful, safe and very interesting. Enjoy them. Cabin TV was poor this time, in picture quality, and the Cruise channel had the TV Guide which was hard to use. Hard copy print as an option would be better. The looping Documentary of P & Os history while interesting the first couple of time was annoying by the four day. TV on demand should be installed with better sets. Photos and Videos on board , take your own, the package is not worth the high cost. Get roaming on your phone and the internet is still extortionate in cost. Drinks cost are about the same as Pub/ club prices in Australia. Avoid the Beverage package unless you think you can drink $80 plus worth of alcohol a day , every day! hmmmm. But the Bar staff were very hospitable and efficient. Take a cheery disposition with you in all, heard and saw some couples squabbling, not on a cruise please!? The young people seem to behave themselves better than some seniors. (sigh) . Anyway a three star outing for P & O this time. OK cruise with some improvement needed here and there. Read Less

Just back from our first cruise with my wife. I have a cafe, 28 staff and have high standards so I understand hospitality. Good service we very much enjoyed the short trip from Melbourne to Sydney and had a ball. I can not understand the negative reviews and think they would moan as they are just moaners on a ship or on land…. Staff: Were very friendly and very helpful on the whole trip. Waterfront: Very clean, heaps of options on the menu and the food was great, white table cloths and very enjoyable service. Pantry: Very clean, heaps and heaps of options, Asian, Fish & Chips, Mexican, Indian, Roasts, Salads, Sandwiches and rolls etc etc, and of course desserts. Food was hot and very good for served buffet style food, also a tea and coffee station, orange and apple juice plus chilled water. opens as soon as you board the ship if you are hungry The Grill: Very clean, If you are hungry after out side of dining hours you can buy, Burgers - Hotdogs - Nachos -Chips for $ 3.00, Bucket of prawns $ 15.00 or fantastic large pizzas for $ 9.50) Beverage Packages: We chose $ 7.00 per day for soft drink as we are not big drinkers or $ 69.00 per day for the alcohol package, you can use all over the ship or pay as you go. Entertainment: Heaps to choose from on different decks day or night Cabin Mini Suite 11146: Excellent, larger than we had thought, clean, very comfortable bed, balcony to just looking out to sea or the views as we went along the coast and brilliant views of Sydney. The cabin is cleaned every day and turned down at night. Arriving and Departure of ship: Very well organised I’m taking my son on a second cruise on the Eden next month and can not wait to experience another P&O ship. Please do not listen to the moaners, P&O give a great cruise at a very affordable price, I felt sorry for the staff at times. Read Less

As a group we chose this cruise for a New Years eve and cruise along to South Australia and back. Amazing that it took two days to reach Tasmania from Melbourne. We had a balcony cabin midships as we would normally do on our cruises. Cabin presentation was reasonable but like the rest of the ship, it is suffering from age and lack of attention to maintenance. Everywhere you go you can easily see rusted areas that have (if lucky) been roughly painted over without proper preparation, broken fittings and generally sloppy presentation care. evening meals was an experience! Waiting in long queues in the hope of getting a table was a totally new experience for us on a cruise ship and this even though we had booked time slots. typical of most cruise ships, the so called duty free shopping is just an excuse to work back from the ever mythical RRP but in reality no bargains to be had and not even from the Chinese junk clothing sale held to try and attract market place buyers was worth while. Food areas shut down early where on other cruises we have been on here and Europe, many are open late including free ice-creams, hamburgers etc. but not on this ship. If you want one of those things, you pay and pay. You guessed it, we are not using this ship again and will more carefully vet the next cruise to ensure the experience is not repeated. Wee do not mind paying for our cruise but value for money must come into the equation and here the balance was no where near correct. Read Less

I am an experienced traveler though not an experienced cruiser. Let me say firstly that the cruise ex Fremantle to Geraldton, Broome, Lombok, Bali and Komodo was fantastic value for money. What I would have liked is to pay more to GET more. Its best described in star rating. Accomodation 2 star. (went 12 nights without a fridge in my cabin. Everyday I was told it was getting fixed. Food 4 star in the restaurants... 2-3 star in the buffet. Drinks 2 star. Beer $8.00 .After 2 days at sea you couldn't buy a bottle of wine under A$50 which sells at any land based outlet for $16.00.( And P&O have the benefit of duty free buying!!!) A very poor effort. Entertainment 3 star. Staff 3 star. Those that historically get tipped were good. Those that didn't were plain rude. Shore Access. 2 star. You spend ALL day queuing for a 3 hour shore time. Will I sail again.... maybe... with P&O.... never. Read Less

This was our first cruise was a little unsure what to expect, but from the moment we arrived at the Terminal were treated exceptionally well. Upon arriving at our oceanview cabin a room steward appeared and happily brought our luggage into the cabin and explained everything about the cabin and ship. We found the staff and crew on board were the friendliest people on earth, always smiling and acknowledging you by name, especially the cabin stewards making little towel animals for the bed. The meals in Plantations and the Waterfront were fantastic with plenty to choose from, ooooohh the pastries and deserts were incredible, the only negative was the coffee stations would break down quite abit. The entertainment was brilliant with plenty of choice between stage shows to just chilling on the pool deck watching a movie. The tours available were fantastic with a good selection to choose from, Komodo Island tour including Pink Beach was my highlight, it is a bucket list item ticked also the Elephant Safari was brilliant. The ship was starting to show signs of wear but was going to dry dock in may, but was still very comfortable, my only concern on the Cruise was that our Air Conditioning in the Cabin broke down only 3 days into our cruise. I would recommend this company, boat and crew to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday. Read Less

Let me start off by saying I was the last person who thought i would be going on a cruise but i have to say it was the most amazing thing i could of done! Once you get onto the ship there is nothing left to do, just sit back and relax! you don't have to worry about checking into hotels or anything! We went on a 4 night cruise on a P&O Australia boat called the Pacific Jewel. It only had one port of call and that was Morton island, just off Queensland Australia. Let me start by telling you about the ship, We forked out and got a window room and it was great! lots of room and very neat and tidy(not to mention the amazing view), It was plenty off room for me and my partner even a nice size bathroom. We were on the 5th floor and i prob wouldn't go any higher then that as it was perfect because you couldn't really feel any rockiness at all. After i finished unpacking we went from one side of the ship to another to check it out and it exceeded all my expectations. The ship was tidy and well looked after. There was an array of bars, dining options, and boutique shops, not to mention the extensive selection of entertainment. My first stop was the buffet for lunch and i was instantly impressed with the spread. They had everything from roast dinner to Indian cuisine, hamburgers and chips and also a fresh fruit bar and a dessert bar. After lunch i headed back to my room and found the daily news paper so i started planning my day. There so much to choose from that there was not enough hours in the day. Anything from art to cocktail making classes(i highly recommend doing the cocking making class at mix bar), live shows, dance classes and more. One of the highlights for me was watching Beyonce on the big screen on top of the deck. I also participated in the on board trivia and karaoke which seemed quite fun for everyone. At night we chose to dine in the on board restaurant which had a lovely reoccurring menu available everyday accompanied by a menu of daily specials that changed everyday. This makes every dining experience different everyday. So in conclusion the pacific jewel provided an excellent first cruise experience. I would have no hesitations recommending this ship to my family and friends and anyone else who is thinking of going on a cruise with P&O. I love everything that it had to offer and it made my 21st birthday a very memorable time. Read Less
