We took this short, 4 day local cruise because my husband has recently become disabled and wheelchair dependent, and we both wanted to see how we would manage by ourselves on a cruising holiday with his disabilities. We were in one of only 2 wheelchair accessible cabins. Sadly, they were obviously included as an afterthought because they were both located on deck 4, at the very front of the ship (so the ride through rough weather wasn't at all pleasant) but we didnt have any choice. Ideally, these cabins should have been positioned near the elevators to allow easier access for people with disabilities. The cabin had tiny port hole windows - they had paint all over them and were so filthy it was hard to see anything through them. However, the cabin itself was very spacious so as to accommodate our wheelchair and other equipment, although the layout was not at all wheelchair friendly. It was almost impossible for my husband to get into bed because his wheelchair couldn't be positioned along side the bed, necessitating the need for me to push, pull and roll my husband into position from the foot of the bed and he isn't a small man! The corridor leading from the elevators to our cabin was very long and narrow and quite often the cabin stewards and cleaners would block the passage with their cleaning equipment making it all but impossible to manoevre the wheelchair through the obstacle course. The elevators, we found, were extremely tiny and my husbands wheelchair only just squeezed in sideways, with me and maybe one other person being able to get inside at the same time. In regards to restaurants it is essential to make reservations the immediately upon embarkation otherwise it is highly likely you will be eating in "The Pantry" for the entire cruise. This is located on the Lido Deck and replaces the traditional buffet however the food is average food court fare, akin to what you would find in your local shopping centre, and is only open at set times, unlike other cruise line buffets which are pretty much open most of the time. There are 3 other "free" restaurants on board - Angelo's (offers tiny portions of mediocre Italian cuisine - you can upgrade to "nicer" food for a fee), The Waterfront (A La Carte dining; tiny portions; we paid a fee and upgraded our main course to steak - disgusting, fatty and gristly - I cook better steaks than that - so it was very disappointing to pay extra for poor quality steak) and finally, Dragon Lady Asian cuisine. This place was wonderful. We ate here on the 3rd night and were fully prepared for another disappointing dining experience, but we were pleasantly surprised as the food and service was wonderful with good portion sizes. There are also 3 places to eat where guests must pay extra - Salt Grill by Luke Mangan (we didn't dine here but we were told that the food is delicious), The Chefs Table (again we didnt dine here) and on the Lido Deck by the pool the is "The Grill". Here guests can purchase hot dogs, chips, pies, burgers etc. We had a pizza late one night and hot dogs during the day after the pantry had closed for lunch. Both were just okay (nothing to write home about), but on previous cruises with other cruise lines, these items were always included in the cruise fare and not an additional fee, so I felt that this was a bit of a rip off. The actual ship as a whole was just average; the crew and staff, although pleasant and friendly towards the guests, all seemed unhappy and bored. There weren't enough staff around to keep on top of the cleaning and it was all too common in the pool and deck areas to see filthy tables, dirty dishes and food and drink spillages left unattended to, and not a bin in sight. The whirlpool spas were at a pleasant temperature but the spa jets weren't operating and they had disintegrated in places. In all, I would say our short get away was okay, but the ship lacked atmosphere, fun and excitement. The live musicians were pretty terrible, out of tune and off key, and the whole ship seemed tired, worn and lackluster. We cruised on the P & O Pacific Eden on 1st December 2017 for a six-night cruise to Tasmania. We were rather worried because of all the negative reviews which we had read. Contrary to this we had a very pleasant trip when all our expectations were exceeded. It is an old ship, but our room 'Stateroom' was very comfortable and clean. The bathroom also old with a bath to step into for a shower but clean. It was serviced every day. Our room was tidied and cleaned each day including our bed made each morning and turned down before the night. The aircon was nice and cool and we slept well each night. The crew was very helpful at all times, but I guess it always helps if there is a mutual exchange of respect. The meals were totally opposite to the negative reviews - food was always hot, and satisfying. The Pantry was our favourite...the variety was amazing! The 'Waterfront Restaurant' very nice and I feel sorry for the poor waiters carrying those burning hot plates. I have included some photos which you can judge for yourself. With taste I think there is a phenomenon of being at sea... tastes are slightly different, for example my cup of tea. using the same tea as back at home tasted not as strong. Not sure why but the food was fantastic. At the Pantry you could go for second helpings if so desired, but tried to resist and used the stairs for exercise instead of the lift. Sadly because of adverse weather, the Ship Captain made the decision to sail West and around Tasmania and to Hobart, wisely choosing passenger safety over the stop over at Port Arthur. This choice made sailing more comfortable for us. Although we missed out on Port Arthur, spending time on the ship made up for it in comfort. The shows were very entertaining, and we enjoyed the Jazz Band at the bar, the Trivia, games and activities all very good. The decks were never overcrowded. We thoroughly enjoyed our stop over at Burnie and Hobart. Our pre-booked on-line Shore Tours tickets were delivered to our room. Overall we had a great and restful holiday and don't understand why people complain so much? We recommend this cruise as a great holiday for a very affordable cost. Read Less

We had to cancel our 4x4 trip to the Simpson desert. I was looking forward to this trip , the car was ready and the bags was packed. Then my husband had to have an emergency hip replacement. This would have been his 3 in just 5 months. Holding back the tears with the lump in your throat as the specialist explains the procedure once more , To help my husband to heal I thought of a cruise, he got the ok from the doctor and all I had to do was book. ITS THE BEST THING WE HAVE EVER DONE LAST MINUTE CRUISE. Was relaxing , healing , exciting , it gave us something to look forward to. Booking the cruise was easy , I had a cruise booked within weeks. Our cabin was perfect, especially the cabin crew. They made us laugh everyday. We ate breakfast and dinner in the restaurant every morning and night, and enjoyed every meal. We had a ball with the passengers as they where all friendly. My husband and I was able to visit the islands as disembarking was easy . For the entertainment well , we only watched a few. As we enjoyed sitting by the bar playing the games and chatting with other passengers . We had a ball. This cruise was healing, exciting, relaxing , comfortable and very friendly Read Less

Pacific Eden is a pretty ship. I liked the fact that it was smaller than other cruise ships mainly because I liked the feel of the movement of the ship over the waves. I slept like a baby every night and afternoon nanny naps. I found the bed to be extremely comfortable. Many people complain they are too hard but I like a firm mattress, and I so wish I knew where to buy pillows like P & O supply on their ships. I did not like the fact they put doonas on beds instead of sheets and blankets... too hot.. Glad I knew beforehand and bought my own sheets and requested a few blankets off the cabin steward. Embarkation was a breeze and the new Wynyard Walk from Wynyard station great..straight to the King Street ferry wharf and within 15 minutes was on the ferry and around to the whitebay cruise terminal. Bought the ferry tickets online so nil problems.. In fact we were the only ones who availed ourselves of this service. Sort of felt like James Packer as the ferry was 2 storeys with a bar..seats about hundred.. and 2 passengers..us. Disembarkation..was again without a hitch. We had fine weather all the cruise. The cabin 4115 was clean..silent.. and superb cabin stewards.. Ferdy and Jo. The air conditioning leaves a lot to be desired.. barely on.. one night I spent a few hours on deck as it was cooler.. another I complained and it worked reasonably well.. I have seen others on this forum say it was too cold.. I found the opposite.. my airconditioner at home works better. P& O also should really do away with the baths in the cabin.. This is Australia and most Aussies use showers.. not to mention that a few days into the cruise.. someone obviously ( I found this out from the staff) left their plug in the bath.. and it flooded not only their cabin but the one next to it.. The passengers were moved to other cabins while they dried out the cabins but in doing so made a great inconvenience to us further up who had to put up with the sound of loud dryers well into the night and reduced airconditioner.. it would have gone on if I had not complained. I also think that P & O should invest in fridges in all cabins.. Food was okay.. not 5 star but okay.. We ate at the same table most nights.. and had lovely , expert, courteous waiters.. Wilson and Shapmil but one or two times we were put elsewhere... ended up walking out halfway through one meal as the waitress was rude and abrupt and stood around watching the others run off their feet while she did nothing. After waiting almost an hour between courses and without any plates being removed from the table by the time the next course arrived,, I had had enough, the meal wasn't worth the wait.. We stopped at Gladstone.. give that a miss..what a dump.. but the other ports.. Hamilton Island, Cairns and Moreton Island were very good. Read Less

Four night cruise from Sydney to Moreton Island. This was our second cruise, our first being nine nights to New Caledonia on Carnival Spirit in Feb 2016. Embarkation at the White Bay Container Terminal was fast and efficient. Navigating into the carpark beforehand was more of a challenge, but we found our way in eventually (the gps was completely out of its depth). Our balcony room on level nine was roomy enough and adequate for our needs. Our luggage was delivered within a reasonable timeframe. Disembarkation was also very smooth. Dining The Pantry - crowded and stuffy. Quite often long lines for food and usually very difficult to find a place to sit. The layout makes it feel very cramped, and air con seemed to be absent at times which makes it worse. The use of round coffee tables throughout this area also detracts from the experience - low round tables with long, straight bench seats simply don't work. The food itself is of average quality, but it is a good idea how they have staff serve the food rather than self serve as this alleviates hygiene concerns. The Waterfront This is main dining room and we had two breakfasts and two dinners here. The breakfast menu is the same each day and the service was good and the food was hot. The dinner menu changes each day. The service was generally good, the meals were hot on arrival. Food quality and portion sizes were acceptable, though a little small. At our first meal there we ordered mango brûlée for dessert. Yuk. No hint of mango in this dish which consisted of a shallow dish with a thin layer of something like baked custard in it. Salt Grill $49 aud per head - bookings essential. Due to the popularity of this venue we had to accept a 5:30 booking for dinner. Food quality was very good and the service also very good. Flavoursome meals here which contrasted with the tendency towards the bland at the other restaurants. Desserts were also very good. Dragon Lady - modern Asian fusion. Very good service. Food portions were ridiculously small. Main meals would have been considered entrees anywhere else. Desserts were poor. We tried the mango with sticky rice, but again no trace of mango to be found, we also had the chocolate slice which seemed to be made from gelatin and even though it looked like chocolate, it didn't taste like it. Angelo's - Italian restaurant, others in our group had dinner there on the first night and reported that it was terrible and strongly recommended that we avoid it. So we did just that. The dining experience for us on Carnival was better across the board. There was good coffee to be had from a couple of locations -$- ocean bar on 8 and the ice creamery on 11. Entertainment In this area P&O had the edge over Carnival IMO. We really enjoyed the Blue Room with the jazz or blues band each night. Real music played by musicians has always been my preference as opposed to carbon copy cover songs. The acoustic guitar player, Troy, was very good too, playing recognizable covers but well and truly in his own style. The song and dance shows in the large auditorium were not much different to what we had seen on Carnival and are ok if you like that sort of thing. The theme nights were both great, the Gatsby Party on the second night was well attended throughout the various bars on level 8 with maybe half the people making some kind of effort at dressing in theme. Lots of dancing and even some free glasses of champagne being handed around. Would have been nice if the entertainers had dressed in theme too (I am talking about the blues band here.) The White Night party on deck 11 on the third night was great fun too. Pumping music a mixture of DJ and live band worked really well and a fair percentage of those in attendance were in white (to some extent). Steady Eddie was great on the final night. More comedy would not have gone astray. The only time we found ourselves relocating to another bar to escape an act on stage was the final night during the 'staff jam session' in the Blue Room. Not good. The Staff Most staff were attentive and cheerful, but some were decidedly not so. No eye contact and seemingly more intent in returning to other things. This was quite noticeable from day one on this ship. Carnival has a sizable edge over P&O in this area. The Cruise Our cruise started by not starting! Our departure time of 5pm came and went while we sat expectantly on the outside rear deck with cocktails in hand. Eventually an announcement came over from the captain 'on the bridge' that due to a malfunction with the electrical control system out departure would be delayed. Long story short, it took a day and a half to resolve the issue so Moreton Island was dropped from the itinerary and we cruised in the ocean for two days. All passengers were promised a full refund of their cruise fare. I am sure that many, like myself, compensated by drinking more than they may have done otherwise and this may have contributed to the enthusiastic participation and dancing on both party nights! Overall - we really enjoyed our cruise on the Pacific Eden with our group of family and friends. Highlights were the party nights and the onboard live entertainment. The bar areas were all very nice. Downsides were the food which was generally mediocre, and the unforeseen technical issues which unfortunately denied us a full day of travel. Read Less

This was my third cruise, and my first on the Pacific Eden. Also my first cruise with my 11 year old, low verbal autistic child with me. First, the ship, it was beautiful. Plenty of seating areas, beautiful decor, and a lovely atmosphere. I watched 2 movies in the cinema, not bad, but i do prefer the outdoor screen on the other ships more. Also getting to the dining rooms was a little confusing till you worked out best ways to get there. Our room was clean, fairly spacious and our attendants did a great job tidying up after us, and looking after us in general. Our TV didn't work, I rang reception, explained it will be an important feature to our room considering in the evenings ill be keeping an autistic kid occupied with it, and it was replaced within 20 minutes of the call. Brilliant. I didn't get to check out Oasis for kid free time, but I will make a point of it next time. The pool was not filled for the first day due to tiles having been replaced, but once it was open, it was great to swim in. We made use of the spas till then. Food was abit below the standard i have had previously with P&O, portion sizes were smaller, less sides were available, but there was always something tasty available to eat. I generally prefer to eat in the dining room for dinner, but ended up preffering The Pantry on this cruise. The grill closed slightly earlier one night, so we ordered room service (burgers and chips). It came fast, was hot and tasted great. My guilty pleasure of the cruise though were the little fruit flans they have at the sugar bar. Service was abit different to previous cruises too, there were less waiters wandering around the pool deck, but there was still plenty of access to get a drink, i just had to wander to the bar slightly more than i was used to. The staff were all lovely, and went out of there way to accomadate any possible request we had. Entertainment was the usual, Karaoke, Live music, Trivia, Scavenger hunts. The kiddo went to kids club for about half of the cruise, and he loved it. The staff were fantastic, had no worries about his autism, and when he disrupted the movie, they didn't page me and stop his fun, they let him play star wars (one of his favorite things), and kept him happy till I arrived to get him. I was worried that I would be paged with every issue and have to collect him, this did not happen. The kids staff are wonderful, and happy to deal with disabilities. I also loved seeing the bar staff dressed for gatsby night, so did my son, he was happy, cos they were dressed exactly like him, he felt even more special. Overall, a little different from my past P&O cruises, but still every bit as enjoyable, and I am happily booking us both in for the New Years cruise now that i know that even though my child has a disability, we will both get to have a great holiday.
