We sailed aboard Oceania Marina from Lisbon to Monte Carlo Sept 29 – to Oct 6 2019. Our expectations and excitement for the journey as well as the Marina were high based on much research and Oceania’s marketing. Our cruise experience was not five star/luxury, intimate, personal, or warm. Cabin and Concierge Service Cabin service was average, but not personalized or attentive beyond usual clean up and prep. Examples: used more than one bucket of ice nightly, but always had to ask for second one. Superior service would have inquired proactively. Turn down service often clashed with when we were preparing for dinner (8:30p reservations). Superior service would have had our reservation schedule and worked the evening cabin duties accordingly. The patio cushions were removed in the evening but not replaced in the morning. Our attendant and assistant were both pleasant, but seemed to have too large a base to serve for the entire trip. Per Oceania’s marketing, we expected more focused attention (smaller crew to passenger ratio). Concierge service was lacking. Although attended, not welcoming or personalized, even though we used service daily. Recognition and acknowledgement would have elevated the experience. Deck door between our cabin deck and our neighbor’s cabin deck was not secure/firm and would rattle and clunk during the night. Food and Beverage Service Drink service at bars was often slow regardless of number of patrons. Bartender acknowledgement, even if busy with other tasks, is expected and was rarely given. Weather was warm, and deck service was never offered on the three occasions I chose to utilize the various areas, to include spa terrace, main pool area, and conversation areas. We dined at Waves Grill for lunch three times and the steak and lobster was superb, as was the ahi tuna. The other sandwiches were average. Waves Grill table service was lacking. Water service was immediate, but bar service was slow and inattentive. It also lacked personalization. I had a premium beverage package and ordered wine with lunch with ice. Never was I recognized or asked proactively if I wanted wine again with ice – this would have been superior service and not just average service. Sommelier service in the buffet was slow as well, but only used it on the first day. It is noted the buffet table service on the port side of the Terrace Buffet was far superior to what we experience elsewhere (breakfast). Red Ginger was superior in service and food quality. Barristas was very good as well, but table service in the library would have been excellent/superior (or at least to be asked once settled). Jacques food quality was lacking. Lamb was overcooked, sent back, and overcooked again. In fact the waiter even mentioned that my barely pink lamb was indeed medium rare versus offering something different or even preparing again, which I would have expected from Superior service. Sommelier service was good/attentive. Our first Grand Dining room service seem strained. Our waiter indicated 9p couldn’t come soon enough. Service throughout the evening wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t excellent. I had to ask for refill of wine when needed. Our second Grand Dining experience was similar to our first. The escargot was very good, lobster bisque lacked any indication of lobster, and crème brulee was grainy and of a pudding/undercooked consistency rather than custard. Table service did not inquire why it wasn’t eaten or if it was satisfactory or if we wanted something else. Superior service would have been more aware of our experience. Tuscany grill was average for food quality, sommelier service, and table service. Not bad, but not 5 star. Our last night was Polo Grill. Initial table service was commendable, but bar service and sommelier was extremely anxious and stressed and virtually non existent, even as the volume of people diminished (we had 830 reservations and were there at 825). Had to ask repeatedly for wine/refill and table service seemed not to know our understand how our experience was going or being paced to facilitate beverage/wine service – they did not seem to partner with the sommelier or kitchen very well. We were virtually ignored for an hour by our table service (other than water). The main course never came and no one spoke to us about delays or gave any indication that they were even aware of delays. Around 9:30 my husband sought the maître de and still no one came to talk to me or refresh my service. By 9:40, I was upset and left the restaurant with my husband in order to pack and prepare for departure tasks. Only at that time did there seem to be any concern about our service and experience. Although apologies were given and alternatives offered, at that time is was far too disappointing and too late to repair. Other Services/Activities I had planned on using the artist’s loft (one of the reasons I chose Marina), but it was never attended nor any products or amenities available to use other than the 4p class which conflicted with excursion timing. A self service option would have been lovely to use for sunset sketching or morning activity. Summary: After much research, I chose Oceania because we enjoy a casual, resort environment with outstanding amenities, focused service, and five star cuisine and culinary experience. The service and quality aboard Marina was inconsistent and impersonal, not superior or intimate. I am very disappointed to have paid more than twice what I have on other cruise lines while experiencing less service, quality, attentiveness, and appointments (including Celebrity, Carnival, and A-Rosa River cruises). It is noteworthy to mention I have not received a follow up directly or indirectly from Oceania for feedback as of 17 October (11 days after disembarkation). Read Less

We really like the quiet atmosphere of Oceanic - very few children, not a lot of loud music. The pool area stays relatively quiet. The food is, for the most part, very good - especially in the specialty restaurants. We had the wine and beer package, which allows beer and wine by the glass at meals. It was adequate. I would suggest they add a couple of WBTG at each restaurant to complement the food. Our cabin was wonderful - Penthouse Suite. Roomy and comfortable. Rahul the butler and Danelia the housekeeper were friendly and efficient. You get hors d-ouvrves each afternoon, which was nice, but they weren't great. The only noise from above was late at night, and it was minor. Every stop on the Iberian Quest itinerary was fabulous - just beautiful. However, Oceania's excursions can vary in quality. We had some very good ones - Cadiz, Provence - and one unsatisfactory one. We had booked the spa trip to Granada, but it was changed to Malaga. Also lunch was not provided. Oceania did provide a 25% refund after we complained. Marina is a pretty ship with great food and service. My observation is that Oceania's passengers are trending older, (I mean really older) so if you want a more lively atmosphere, try another line. We would definitely return to this area of the world, but maybe on our own or with Celebrity. Read Less

This was our 6th Oceania Cruise, 3 on each Riviera and Marina. This size of ship suits and have not tried the smaller ones. We booked our flights independently and flew to Lisbon on the day of the cruise arriving at the terminal about 11am, had a quick coffee at the coffee shop next to the cruise terminal and a Pasteis de Nata which was delicious. Embarkation was quick and efficient and we were on board by midday. Included in our package was the Classic drinks package which we upgraded to the Prestige package as soon as we got on board, this cost was $20pp per day which was quickly used up after having one glass of champagne, so upgrading is definitely worth it. Headed to the pool bar for a pre-lunch drink then headed to The Terrace for lunch. As usual the buffet was very good, the selection of food was very good and the service was excellent, plenty of staff and lots of sommeliers so no problem getting a drink. Our cabin was ready by 1pm so we headed down to have a look, we were located midships beside the lifts and stairs an ideal location. The cabin was in good order, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, bathrooms were still as plush so we were very happy. The suitcases were already in the cabin when we went in so we quickly unpacked and headed back to the pool deck. Food in the GDR was very good and again the service was first class, attentive waiters and sommeliers, again no problem getting glasses topped up and we were often asked if we would like another bottle. We took advantage of the 4 speciality restaurants and these didn't disappoint, the food was excellent in each of the restaurants. What lets Oceania down is the poor entertainment, the production company were poor, weak singers and the guest entertainers were poor especially the comedy magician who was on twice and he was embarrassing to watch, the exception was the violinist and the group which played in Horizons. Oceania really need to up their game when it comes to entertainment, there was the usual Trivia in Martinis at 4:30 which is a pain if you want to have a drink as inevitably you need to keep quiet as this is taken very seriously by the teams playing. Oceania trips in my opinion and well over priced and would not book them. We had been to most of the ports with the exception of Alicante so we just did our own thing. We have embarked in Monte Carlo before but never disembarked there. It was a bit chaotic as there is only a very small area for collecting suitcases, this is outside and uncovered, so if it was raining it would have been a bit of a nightmare, also the number of cars in this small area was dangerous. We didn't see much of the Captain or Officers however overall this was an excellent cruise, we met many interesting people and look forward to our next Oceania Cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise for it's Spain-intensive itinerary and no at sea days. This turned out to be a mixed blessing, as we did private tours (Spain Day Tours, which we greatly recommend). All of the tours involved van/bus rides of 1-2 hours, and quite a bit of walking, so we were pretty tired and had no at sea days to recuperate and just enjoy the pool, spa, or the rest of the ship. This was our third Oceania cruise overall, and this time it was just me and my wife (no kid or parents). Even though we tend to keep to ourselves, we met a lot of amazing people during this cruise. At the specialty restaurants, we were required to share tables in order to get an earlier dining time. All of the people we met were modestly to wildly successful, loved to travel, and were a delight to spend an evening with! If you are this type of person, and aren't hypercritical about your room, food, etc. you are going to have a wonderful time on Oceania Marina. Just sit back and let it happen! Observations: - We didn't spend a lot of $$$ on alcohol. We did take advantage of happy hour drink prices at Horizon's, the captain's cocktail party, and discounted drinks each day at the pool (we only had time to use the pool twice though). - Free internet was greatly appreciated. I only used it to check personal email and do some photo editing. The wifi reception wasn't great in our room, but I'm an early riser and would go up for coffee and then sit with my laptop in the library where the connection was great. It's a charming and quiet place to sit. - There is no nickle and diming on Oceania to buy drink packages, buy photos, etc. Very relaxing. - There was more storage in our room than we needed. That was a first!! Unfortunately our oversize luggage wouldn't fit under the bed. - If pressed, we might have noticed a slight decline in the food quality since our previous Oceania visits. Friends we met on board thought so too and one had a pleasant conversation with the head chef about it. But we still enjoyed our meals immensely and this is not really a complaint. My favorite specialty meals seem to change every cruise. This time I liked Toscana the most; Polo Grill was my least favorite as my steak was just OK (loved the pork belly appetizer and the dessert sampler though!). - I would have liked to leave our balcony door open at night and sleep to the waves, but there is too much wind whistling for that. We slept very comfortably with the door closed. - There are plenty of hand sanitizing stations around the ship, and the staff won't let passengers serve themselves at the buffet (these are very good things!). The ship was spotlessly clean. We can't wait to go back to Marina or any other Oceania ship for that matter!!!! Read Less

We've cruised extensively with Oceania starting with the Riviera maiden season in 2012. We were thrilled to have found Oceania as it met a niche for us that other cruise lines we had tried did not. Unfortunately, the product has declined dramatically over the last few years in so many areas. I won't be commenting on the itinerary in detail other to say it was fabulous! Sirena was aquired by Oceania in 2016 and underwent a fairly extensive drydock at that time to bring her up to Oceania standards. Two months ago in May, 2019 Sirena undewent her biggest renovation ever as part of the much advertised Oceania NEXT program. The ship is gorgeous and absolulely looks better than new. Very impressive appearance. The cabins and bathrooms were gutted down to the steel and rebuilt using the same footprint. Unfortunately, that means standard cabins remain extremeley small and below industry averages for the premium cruise market. Even in the Penhouses bathrooms are VERY small and have poor ventilation. Air conditioning on the ship was consistently a problem - especially in the cabins. The new Oceania beds and bedding are heavenly as are the cushioned lounges with logo clad terry cloth covers. So given the recent refurbishment you would think the Oceania Sirena has all necessary ingredients for a huge recipe for success. Despite all the expensive artwork, gorgeous decor and aesthetically pleasing touches Sirena suffers from a miserable crew which makes her very ugly. That being said, we certainly encounted a number of people on board who were exceptional (cabin stewardess Daniella) and interestingly a few confided in us that they are leaving for Seabourn, Viking and Crystal because "things have gone downhill since NCL purchased us". Many of the crew members remind us of the walking dead. Just zombies doing their jobs - at time begrudgingly. A smile or hello was tough to extract and never seemed sincere. The shore excursions staff and reception staff are indifferent, rude and nasty. Quite condecending actually. Getting a reception staff member to look up and acknowledge you is like pulling teeth and they are clearly annoyed to have to interact with passengers. Preoccupied with other things. Certainly, working on a cruise ship away from family and friends can be difficult for many as it is not a normal life. However, this is the hospitality business. I never encountered passengers being rude or demanding to the staff. Just the opposite. A really nice crowd on this cruise with a lot of kids - mostly very well behaved. Average age probably young 50's. We met many calm, even keeled passengers who lost their nerve over rude treatment on a vacation. A few people I never would have suspected really snapped (not at the crew), by venting to other passengers about their negative experiences and were clearly bothered. Cut backs since NCL aquisition are evident everywhere. Bar service by the pool is quite limited as is the liquor selection (all over the ship). Food quality and offerings have dropped off significantly. On a bright note, Oceania still does one of the best jobs with room service. Bar drinks are expensive if you don't have a drink package and an "honest" drink (think Ruths Chris Vodka Martini) requires a double bringing the price of an "honest" martini that fills an appropriate martini glass to around $27. A few bartenders (Allen and Baptiste) were exceptional, but most were non-communicative, miserable, rude and don't listen. We were the only ones by the pool one morning starting at 11 and no other passengers showed up until noon. I had to go to the bar to ask for an iced tea (I know first world problem) and was treated as if I was inconveniencing the bartender who was doing some cleaning behind the bar. Not a good feeling. Simply put, we didn't feel like welcome guests on Sirena which is unacceptable for any cruise line, but especially for one who markets themselves as better than the rest and premium. We have sailed with this cruise director before. In my opinion he is a lackluster cruise director who fails to set a vibe or personality for the ship. He vanished quickly from his mandatory appearances and it seemed he did not want to be seen by the passengers or mix and mingle. Same can be said of the rest of the social staff on board - I guess the fish stinks from the head and leads by examples (sometimes bad ones). Absent. The ship has no essence or personality which can only come alive with a happy and engaging crew - particularly a social staff that has the ability to take the lead. Over the years Oceania has hired many more Filipinos and Indonesians for what I'm told is 1/3 the cost of hiring a European or South African. I believe these hard working employees are exploited victims of an underground that is not so underground, but right in front of our face and just as unconscionable as sweat shop labor. I had exensive conversations with a fwe crew members who were very open and honest about this issue. Compared to lines like Seabourn where it is not uncommon to have a cabin stewardess who has gone to college to train in hospitality and is fairly paid the Filipino and Indonesian crew are hired without experience, limited English and purely for financial reasons - certainly no fault to these human beings who deserve better, but take the jobs out of desperation. It's not fair to these crew members or the passengers as they are programmed to fail. I can perhaps understand the cheaper labor for mass maket lines, but it is not compatible for a cruise line that markets an ultra premium or perhaps even a luxurious experience to have such a service disconnect. To me Oceania is no different than my cell phone carrier that outsources its calls to the Phillipines because it is cheaper labor. Don't get me wrong - I love the Phillipines and all people. Essentially, my cell phone carrier is telling me I'm not worth talking to a more well compensated and well trained employee in the United States (or elsewhere). Anyone who has experienced these call centers knows it is not a satisfying experience and quite the insult. Likewise Oceania! In summary, if you are looking for a pretty hotel with above average food to transport you from port to port and have no expectations of a "cruise experience" and don't mind being treated as persona non grata Oceania beats the mass market competition - especially when you consider their ships hold 600-1200 passengers compared to 6,000 passengers. There is a benefit to fewer passengers, but keep in mind Sirena has more than 600 passengers at 30,000 tons while Seabourn's Odyssey Class vessels only accomodate 450 passengers at 30,000 tons. So despite the fewer number of passengers one must consider passengers per ton and passenger space ratios. My wife and I just can't get past the rude, zombie, indifferent factor as we enjoy more personalized, interactive and sincere service that should be inherent to near luxury and luxury cruises. It's no fun to be treated rudly and is really irritating and unncessary. Fortunately, we all have choices and for us cruise fanatics there are lines like Seabourn and Crystal that offer this level of service. The beauty of cruising - there is something for everyone and this review is just my two cents. Read Less

Our first Oceania Cruise was on the Marina and we were so “wowed” we booked the Sirena to sail 5 months later. We did not come back from this one overwhelmed with a sense to book the next one ASAP. First, the things that were a little less than fantastic The spa deck was very small and hard to find a seat on some days. So, the concierge upgrade was not really worth the money. The bathrooms were very tiny and, we knew going in it was a smaller ship but, if you are on the toilet with the door closed it was sideways sitting. The room stewards were not as intuitive as to what we needed. For example- on day one we had champagne in a bucket that we didn’t drink on boarding as in it was more fun after sail away. When we came back to the room to drink- the bucket was gone and the champagne on the counter. We had to call to get the bucket back. The buffet restaurant was not quick with water, tea or coffee. Most breakfasts we had to flag someone down to get us more. There was link flexibility in changing restaurant dinner times even with empty tables. The good- heck it is still a fantastic line! The food is fantastic and who doesn’t like grilled lobsters. Honestly, the best food you can have at sea. The main dining room and speciality restaurants had great service. The ship is very clean. Our party of four sailed on Oceania's Nautica in May 2019, leaving Barcelona onto Lisboa, with a southern dip to the Canary Islands. Spent additional four days in Lisboa and the surrounding area. The cruise itinerary was terrific, the main reason we chose. Alas, the ship is a tub, well past its prime. Built in 2000, this almost two decade boat shows its age. Cabin furnishings are tattered. TV is tiny. WiFi didn't work and when it did you were limited to one device per cabin, and it was dicey to change devices without losing the WiFi. Ships colors are dull and lifeless. Casino has perhaps 10 slot machines, some out of order. Our Veranda chairs had to be replaced due to stains. Concierge class offers nothing over standard Veranda cabins (brochure highlights of Concierge benefits only apply to Oceania's larger ships...bait and switch). Food in main dining room average. For the premium price Oceania charges the experience is vastly overrated. jWE cruised on Oceania 7 years ago and found everything to be classy. Something has happened to lower their standards. To be fair, highpoints: cruise Director Carson is absolutely wonderful. Such a waste of talent to be assigned to the Nautica. Shows and fly-in talent were great. Avoid this ship till after 2020 June. If you book prior to that date Oceania should give you a big discount. Read Less

So far we have always cruised on Oceania’s Riviera but decided to “pay a visit” to her older sister, the M/S Marina. The Transatlantic Passage from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro began on November 28th and ended on December 14th. We flew into Lisbon a day early and stayed over at a hotel close to the port. On the embarkation day the departure from the cruise terminal was very disorganized and chaotic; no special area for suites guests to wait, in fact Regent was embarking their guests in the same hall at the same time with no clear separation. As we arrived without luggage tags (not our fault), we worried for a while that our luggage may end up on the wrong ship. Eventually, we were sent off to do the registration on board but it was not clear how to get there. All of a sudden an agent showed up and indicated which door to exit to board the ship. We had to follow others hoping it was the right way. It turned out that the ship was located at about ¼ of a mile away and we all walked off into strong, cold winds. All the usual procedures (info, Credit Cards, photos, etc.) were done at the Marina’s reception desk. It was indeed, a very unusual and surprising way to embark. It is impossible not to compare the two ships; the layouts are the same, locations of restaurants, lounges, spa, exercise room, etc. are located exactly on the same decks and area. The clearest differences (for our taste) were in general, the art work; by far Riviera is much superior and Marina looks/feels older though it’s quite well maintained. The staff were as usual, excellent, coming from different parts of the world: many from Ukraine, quite a number from Honduras, Serbia, a surprisingly good number of Italians and French, from India (mainly being Butlers), etc. The food…..well, there are some issues here. I will start where we had our first meal. *The Terrace (Lunch on day of embarkation) - Choices were very good in all the categories and the servers, excellent as usual. The difference and number in choices were starting to be felt, day after day of sailing, so imagine after 16 days; happy to say that the staff kept being as friendly and helpful as from day one. A note on breads and bread sticks. All are fantastic and always fresh. Especially good were the sliced baguettes and a new bread for me called ‘Normandy’ which was perfect in sandwiches and it toasted extremely well. It can be recognized as a wider than tall domed loaf with three slots or grooves on the top border of each slice. Normandy bread was only available in The Terrace and Waves Grill. On the first night of the cruise we were able to get a table in *Toscana and we were impressed not only with the food but the spaciousness of the place and the excellent Maître d’ and servers and being able to speak Italian with the staff was another big plus. So far so good. *The Grand Restaurant - Everything clicked perfectly: choices, food temperature, taste, service (Maître’d, brothers Julio Cesar & Geovanni/Honduras) ambience, etc. This excellence didn’t change at all being dinner, lunch or breakfast, during the whole cruise. *Waves Grill– I was looking forward to have lunch there but, unfortunately it was a big disappointment; the staff were great but the quality of the food was not so good; e.g. the surf and turf was a big flop though the Kobe Burger was quite good. It is possible that the weather, very strong cold winds, played a big part in making those visits not so enjoyable. Warning: the regular coffee that is served in all the restaurants is very weak so if you like stronger coffee, ask for a cappuccino or a double espresso or simply go to Barristers, one deck up from Waves, and have some great cookies with it! *Red Ginger – We went twice and both times we were satisfied with the food (not to be missed the Miso Sea Bass or the Tuna Tataki) and the great staff (Katerina and Khrystyna/Ukraine, Maria/Serbia) but I found the place a bit narrow, with tables too close to each other and the low chairs and lighting didn’t help. *Jacques – I think that this will be the last time in Jacques regardless it was possible to speak French with a few of them. The food in general is just okay but nothing to rave about it, what I found with every one of my visits was that everybody (diners and staff) behaved in a very pretentious, affected and arrogant manner. It doesn’t make you feel at ease nor able to enjoy the special food or elegant surroundings. *Polo – All the way, another winner! Roasted beet root and goat cheese as an entrée was excellent and the 7 oz. Filet Mignon was cooked to perfection with excellent side dishes. The mashed potatoes were excellent and the string beans superbly steamed. On the last day at sea, we went again to *Toscana and if the first time was very good this one was exceptional! And the night before arriving in Rio we had dinner at *The Terrace hoping to take advantage of such a hot night to dine al fresco while sampling the so much praised lobster. Both were a disappointment; for dinner the tables are set with table clothes but that is only done inside the restaurant. We did not like the al fresco ambiance of no lighting and no table clothes so we opted to eat inside. The “famous” lobster (1/2 a tail, grilled to order) was dry and almost meatless. Regardless and thanks to a beautiful Chardonnay white and the fantastic staff we had a great and tranquil evening much needed after packing at full speed for the three hours before dinner time. Our Ratings for the various specialty restaurants: 1) Toscana 2) Polo very close 3) Ginger 4) Jacques *Entertainment – Lackluster to say the least. Too much screaming (singing??!) and their dancing moves although quite sophisticated and well performed, were the same over and over again; that’s why we went only a couple of times and just for half of the show. The real star of the cruise shows was a singer and his name is Jamie Michael Stewart; his second show titled “Sinatra and friends” was superb!! If you have him on any of your future cruises do not miss going to hear him sing!!! And about the Cruise Director, the only thing I am allowed to say about him personally is that he tried to be funny but he only accomplished being completely pathetic. Oceania management needs to realize how important the Cruise Director’s role is. First and foremost he is a host for each and every guest and considering that Oceania is an upscale cruise line, he should have more in common with the guests. That means an older and more sophisticated person than is the industry norm, i.e. young comical entertainers. **Cooking demonstrations – They were given in the Marina Lounge (Theater) by the Senior Executive Chef Laurent Trias and they were all very instructive and many times very funny. Although considering the present “# Me Too era”, this top chef was quite a bully with his underlings. On Dec. 7th, at the second Captain’s cocktail Reception I met the very curt and polite Captain Leo Strazicic and his very friendly and welcoming GM Marck Warmenhoven. Both took the time for meaningful conversations. *Canyon Ranch Terrace an excellent place to enjoy the sun, soaking yourself in the hot tub, taking a shower or simply relaxing in peace with no hoopla around you. Excellent place. *Fitness Center located close by, is ample with a lot of machines with great views thru the surrounding floor to ceiling windows. Very busy especially on sea days. This was our second long (more than 10/12 days) cruise and for sure that will never happen again; after the first one (different Cruise Line) I swore that I would not do it again but the opportunity to cruise past the Equator on board Oceania Marina, took over but it won’t happen again! Simply what goes wrong is that after a while everything starts to get too repetitious and that leads to boredom with both food and staff. *Tours – We only took one of the ship’s tours and that was in Salvador da Bahia (Brazil) the rest of the ports we were on our own. Unfortunately, Viator did not have anything to offer on any of the transatlantic ports on this passage so for all the other ports we had to do it on our own. The reason we do this, is because we find the way our fellow passengers behave is completely unacceptable; e.g. waiting in the Marina Lounge for your tour number to be called and when that happens there is an stampede of “grown-ups” rushing to the exit, bumping into everybody just to be first to the bus and get the seats they want; and the same happens at every stop, they are all rushing to be the first to get off. Sorry, but for me and in the way I was educated (and have taught my children) that is not civilized and shows a complete lack of respect for your fellow travellers. At any rate that’s how we generally feel about ship sponsored tours but I am sure you won’t mind if I give some pointers on what we found and how we approached the various ports visited on this cruise. *Cadiz – Although this was our second time there we visited a different and unknown area; from the pier you have quite a long but enjoyable walk to an area where we read you could find numerous tapas bars; the weather was not good (cold, windy and little sun) and all those bars were located on shady streets so we ended up in a bar in the sunny main plaza (under construction with lots of noise); the food wasn’t what we expected, the wine was so-so but we met a beautiful girl (Vanessa) with whom we talked and laughed a lot which made up for the lack of authentic tapas. You know, you go on your own so you take your chances. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Anyway it is a beautiful city that deserves to be visited and explored on a longer stay. *Arrecife – There is nothing worthwhile to see on your own so if you don’t mind to go thru the ‘tour hassle’ I mentioned above, better to take any of the ship’s guided tours. *Tenerife – Walked to the center of town (long walk and not as nice as it was in Cadiz). We got there on a Sunday, meaning that ALL the outdoor bars and restaurants were taken over by big families with a lot of kids (running and screaming around tables). We walked around trying to find some nice and tranquil place but this was not possible so we went right back to the ship. Advice: again take a ship tour, especially if you arrive on a Sunday! *Praia (Cape Verde) – We had a tour booked but after reading info given by the ship that the busses they use are not comfortable and without A/C we cancelled it. We took the offered shuttle that leaves you not far from the main square where you can visit a very nice and simple church, visited the Market extremely busy, cramped and strong fish smell etc., back to the main plaza/park where there is a modern building with a covered bar and had a couple of local beers (good) while watching the city crew install Christmas decorations around the park. For payment they accepted US$ (paper no coins) but the change returned was in their currency and only in coins. Walked back down the hill suffering the very hot and heavy weather to take the return shuttle to the ship. As we approached the dock we saw one of the returning tour busses and we got very upset because we could see that the tour bus was a regular van, quite ample and I am sure had A/C. So now you know and we strongly recommending the ship tour instead of wandering around a quiet town with but one spot to enjoy a drink and people watching. Here is the best time to point out that the first part of the cruise the weather wasn’t good (cold, strong winds, etc.) but starting in Praia the whole thing changed completely and in a way, for the worse! Having high temperatures and exceedingly high humidity is not much fun, especially if walking around on your own! *Cruising the Equator – This was quite an experience! It happened on the third sea day’ December 8th prior to arriving in Recife. The day was perfect; very hot and humid with a soft breeze. So it was a lot of fun seeing how all the participants and onlookers were enjoying the colourful ceremony. We enjoyed all this with our ever present topped up white wine glasses in hand. Thus expectations were fully met. *Recife (Brazil) – On our own again (after yesterday’s revelation about better busses etc. we tried to book a tour but all were filled up) and taking the shuttle into town; they left us in a big building not getting any idea were to go next or what to do. Decided to take a taxi to Mercado Central located in the old part of the city. Warnings! Unless you are fluent in Portuguese DO NOT take a taxi because they will fool you as much as they can/want and second warning, DO NOT go around the Old City because it is quite depressing to see so much poverty, chaos and dirt besides trying to walk along very crowded, boisterous, treacherous streets where if you missed one step you would end up on the ground or in a gutter. Take a tour and go to the modern Recife that for the skyline we saw from the ship, at least it looks more orderly and is very expansive. In fact, on leaving Recife, the skyline continued for what seemed like 5 or ten miles, so this place is much more developed that was apparent in the old downtown quarter. *San Salvador da Bahia – Had an overnight there so the first day we left the ship early (remembering the h&h!) and walked to the two story Mercado Central that was full of souvenir shops on the ground level and a very nice restaurant with an encircling terrace on the second floor. After eating and drinking lightly, we went to the Lacerda Elevator that quickly brings you up about 200 feet to the upper part of the city were unfortunately large areas were boarded up due to repairs in progress. Advice: The price of the Elevator was 15 real p/p (coins only) each way, that’s only 3 cents US but they won’t accept any other currencies. A local food cart operator gave us the change and would not take even one US dollar, so if it had not been up to his generosity/kindness we would have missed the top of the town visit. Afterwards, we learnt that the trip was free for all over 65 years (Brazil offers many such seniors benefits). The following day we took a ship’s tour (all the same hassle as previously described); the tour guide was very knowledgeable and the highlight was walking the steep hill to the Bon Fin Church. Quite a trek but it was worth it. Great views from up there and lots of photos of the thousands and thousands of coloured ribbons tied to the metal fencing/gates all around the church. The relics/photos of all whose prayers were answered was interesting and reminded us of another such chamber at St. Joseph’s Oratory atop Mount Royal in Montreal, Canada. The Carnival in Salvador is as famous as the Rio one and our tour bus covered much of the seaside route that the procession follows every February. Also along the route are an amazing number of architectural splendors. The facades are multi-coloured and with a wide variety of design and materials. They seem to have captured the market for needle condo’s that have but one or two apartments per floor, quite amazing. *Cabo Frio – After one day at sea, we arrived at this beautiful place and after all we’ve seen so far in Brazil this is the one place I would love to come back to and spent days visiting the so many beautiful beaches full of beautiful youth. We made the effort as it was at least 1 kilometer to the main beach! But we left longing for more. Here is an opportunity for Oceania or the city of Cabo Frio to set up a shuttle service. With more time at or near the beach rather than walking, more passengers would spend on drinks, food or shopping. Arrival and Disembarkation Day Disembarkation in Rio went smoothly (amazingly no passport nor customs check nor personnel were around). And once again another very long walk from the ship to where the luggage was; once inside that area things went well. Happy to say that all this happened in the early morning before the heat and humidity took over Rio. Rio is a city that we’ve been to many times (including the crazy and amazing “Carnaval”) so we skipped and sightseeing and headed straight to the airport to catch our flight back home!! At that moment, I/we were very much looking forward to being back in our beautiful and cold Canada! All in all, it was a great trip with a lot of new experiences (one of the reasons you travel, eh?) and although this will be our last long cruise it won’t be our last; we are still in love with Oceania! We already booked our next one on Insignia, it will be the first time on the smaller ships. We are very curious to see what Insignia’s new look will be after the upcoming and soon to be finished major refurbishment. We know that the suites are much smaller than on Marina and Riviera, with 500 or so fewer passengers (and lower ceilings!) That’s a personal concern of mine as I’m 6+ feet tall so we’ll see if it fits me. I will be sure to let all of you know, okay? Till my next one and have all of you a very Happy New Year!!! Read Less

Took ship's tours as I am travelling solo, private tours see more, more leasurely pace. I felt rushed as there was a need to cram many sites in limited time. Have been to Rio before- never attempted to do Sugerloaf and Christ the Redeemer the same day. Tours used all the time, very little time for shopping. Food was wonderful, but this length of cruise was long enough to tire of it. The ship started to decorate for Christmas, but the major construction was still hidden under a curtain when I left. Weather was warm, Rio was over 100. All the Brazilian stops were hot. New port of Praia was interesting, terribly poor country. Well, time to start my diet, scheduled doctor visit Friday. Read Less

We picked this cruise because it was short and fit our timeline and our desire to go back and visit Spain after attending a wedding there a few years ago. The Marina was beautiful, very similar to the other Oceania ship we had been on (Regatta) but larger and had more options. We went to Red Ginger (B plus), Toscana (A minus) and Jacques (A++++) for Specialty restaurants, they were all delicious and the service was great. The Grand Dining Room, Waves restaurant and Terrace Cafe were all great too, I will say the quality of the breakfast in Terrace Cafe seemed to be not as good as the Regatta, but still fine. Our P Cabin was large and comfortable, I think it would be fine for an extended cruise. We didn't partake in any of the entertainment or Oceania excursions, we did our own thing. The service was very good, our room was always kept in great shape and our butler/room steward were very friendly and helpful. My whole family fell in love with the staff at the pool area bar that week (Maya, Maria and Valentina made us feel so welcome). They were so fun and always had a great crowd hanging out and talking to each other, we wished we had more time on the ship. I can't say enough about how great these three ladies were and how they really made our trip. My only slight complaint was just the rigamarole getting in and out of the ports, but I don't think that was an Oceania thing as opposed to just a logistics thing around the Mediterranean. The ports were all very popular and I think in the future I would make more of an effort to book private tours vs. getting stuck on shuttles for a large part of the day. We went with an alumni group and got off to a bad start when the transfer company bus did not show up.....for 3 hours, then took 2.5 hours to get 5 miles to dock, then union workers went home at 4 p.m. so had to carry our own baggage onto the ship....called Oceania but no help along the way. Given bus telephone that was not answered, then waiting 15 minutes for supervisor only to find out he was too busy to talk to us as we stood outside the airport with the transfer agent looking for the bus. Also, I don't like having to be my own tour guide and schedule and pay for the land packages ahead of time. Most were already booked except the most expensive private tours. There has got to be a better way. While we loved the ship and the staff and the food, the logistics were poor at best......getting from plane to boat....getting land packages booked.....making due on our own when no packages were available.....river cruises are just much easier to enjoy and you are not nickled and dimed at the end for every wine, drink, snack, etc of every day. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. Embarking in Lisbon was EASY and fast. There were no long lines getting on and off the ship, unlike Celebrity where you start to feel like cattle (we have been on 5 Celebrity cruises, all on big ships). The Marina was about half the size and felt much more intimate, quiet and user-friendly. We were in cabin 9002, which is all the way forward on the port side. Because it backs up to a suite, it has an unusually large wrap-around veranda, which was wonderful. We had unrestricted views fore and aft. The main dining room is one story, no vast overhanging gallery, very cozy with windows on three sides. The food was excellent in the dining room, and we always found something we wanted to try. Portions are reasonably sized; there were only a couple of times when we were served gigantic plates that we couldn't finish. The Polo Grill was excellent and innovative, as was Jacques. Toscana was typically Italian and nothing special. We didn't try Red Ginger. My husband thought the food generally was over-salted, but it didn't bother me. We didn't buy a beverage package, figuring there was only so much we could drink in a day, and that was fine. We never felt like we skimped on beer and wine. The service in all dining rooms was truly fine. Even on a 10-day cruise, servers remembered us and what we like to drink, etc. A nice mix of nationalities; we truly enjoyed talking to the staff. We had a $700 shipboard credit, but found (of course) that it could not be applied to excursions we had booked before the cruise. So instead my husband had two massages (wonderful) and I had a nice manicure. Good spa facility. The Oceania shore excursions are overpriced and nothing to go crazy for. Read Less

This was my first cruise with Oceania and I loved it. The embarkation was so easy. We are used to queueing for 2 hours or more to board other cruise lines. We just walked on board, my husband sat down in the theatre while I gave the embarkation details. All done including both our photos in a couple of minutes. The cabin was large with ample storage space.There were many beautiful places to sit quietly throughout the ship or bars and lounges to visit. All the dining rooms were beautiful and in the main dining room we were always offered the choice of a table for just the 2 of us or for sharing. The food was amazing. It certainly lived up to its reputation. The Itinerary was very good and although we did not take any of the ships excursions all the main sites were easily accesible We found the entertainment a little disappointing due mainly to the design of the theatre which wasn't banked sufficiently so making viewing difficult from the back. We also enjoyed the shows, which were most entertaining. Generally, very impressed with Oceania. Critical comments:(1) very few educational lectures, and some were merely designed to sell product (orthotics); (2) ports of call - could have eliminated Alicante and Sete, neither of which provide much interest and are similar to other ports of call, and substitute 1 day at sea and 1 port in Western Italy (Genoa, Rapallo?); (3) the cruise-sponsored "limited group" tours are extremely expensive and provide little value, when compared to small group or Viator and other private tour companies; a busload tour, even if included as part of a package, gives very little information due to the large number of attendees. Some tours involved traveling 2 hours for a 1 1/2 hour "explore on your own" before returning to the ship; that is a wasted tour. Finally, I object to having to choose between (i) 3 (large group) excursions, (ii) a drink package, or (iii) a purchase credit; we are either non- or social drinkers, do not make expensive purchases on-board, and find the large group ship sponsored tours to have little value. For the money, I would have preferred an upgrade to larger stateroom or reduced booking fare. Read Less

We have been on Oceania before and loved it and this was a great itinerary. The cabin was a little disappointing. It seemed a bit worn out. The bathroom has a big bathtub shower in addition to a small stall shower. Cabin steward was excellent. Food on Oceania has always been fantastic but this time we were disappointed. There are 4 specialty restaurants which were all excellent but the main dining room which is beautiful was not as good as in the past. The food was good but the selections were not as good. Overall we still love Oceania and would cruise again. The ports were very good and Oceania provides a free shuttle to the center of town in a lot of the ports. We generally do our own tours because we like smaller groups and lower prices than those tours that Oceania offers. The entertainment was good. We had a violinist, a piano player, a comedian and a magician in addition to the ship's singers and dancers. Read Less

THE ENTIRE STAFF WERE EXTREMELY FRIENDLY AND The speciality restaurants were great, although we felt that the french restaurant was the weakest, while others thought it was the best. WE THOUGHT THAT THE ENTERTAINMENT WAS FOR THE MOST PART SO-SO AND Not enough on board activities during days in port. The internet was a big disappointment, the service was almost non existent for the most part. Another disappointment was the lack of snacks during the afternoon,other than cookies . Even with these negatives the entire trip was fabulous and we would not hesitate to book this ship again. It was a costly trip, but as they say you get what you pay for. Having already covered the mainstream Med ports pretty thoroughly, we chose this cruise because they offered places we had not been to. Having settled on the itinerary we then read reviews and were quickly sold on Oceania thanks to the positive reports. None of them were wrong. The ship is beautiful and wonderfully maintained, the crew are all totally friendly and more than eager to please, the Concierge level suite was outstanding in both comfort and space, and the cuisine was way above any that we have encountered on previous cruises - both ocean and river types. The policy of being treated as an adult with regard to bringing alcohol on board was a good one. We didn't utilise this as we purchased a Beverage package but would have appreciated it otherwise. Not having been to any of the shows in the theatre I can't pass comment. But we did enjoy the classical quartet and also the singer/pianist in one of the bars. Quizzes were always good fun as the Entertainment Manager had a great sense of humour. The only negative I can post is that the Future Tours Manageress made us feel less than worthy of her precious time and was so rude to us that we walked out without booking as we had intended. I have since been in touch online with a marvellous Oceania agent based in London, take a bow Mr. Charles Deeall, and he has restored our faith to the point where we have booked a December sailing from Cape Town (our home) to Singapore. The boat is beautiful, the service wonderful. The other travelers were terrific. Aside from some issues with the cabin, it was an ideal trip. There were a couple of ports that weren't worth a stop, but maybe they needed to - and the prices of the excursions are prohibitive. We started by just putting a few in the "cart" online and the price was as high as the entire cruise with just a few days worth of excursions, so we emptied the cart! Luckily we found cruise critic and were able to make arrangements with tour providers along with others who were sailing on the same ship. Often we would be on a private tour with just one or two other couples, a tour we would pay $75 pp to take, and see the Oceania tour group while we were out who we know paid $250 pp for the same tour but with a much bigger group and giant bus. Highly recommend the ship, the food was beyond wonderful, the rooms beautiful. Don't pay the crazy amounts for the tours, use TripAdvisor and find recommended tours at a fraction of the price (they know to get you back on time!) The other people on the cruise were fabulous as well - great clientele. We would definitely take another Oceania cruise, but would be sure we got a room that wasn't directly under a deck and be sure we took our own excursions. Read Less

We selected this cruise based on the itinerary. We wanted to spend some time in Portugal before boarding the ship. We also appreciated the fact that the airfare was included in the cruise package. We were able to change our flight departure for a nominal fee to accommodate the five pre-cruise days spent in Porto and Lisbon. We were also able to fly to a different city at the end of the cruise, at no additional cost. Once on board, we thoroughly enjoyed the service and amenities offered on the Riviera. Staff was most accommodating, dining options were plentiful and shipboard activities, especially those offered through the Culinary Center, were most enjoyable. Also had the opportunity to be pampered at the Canyon Ranch Spa - delightful! We did not book our excursions through Oceania as we have had much success using the Forum through Cruise Critic. We have met wonderful people from all over the world who share our love for travel and food. These friendships have extended beyond our days on the ship - an added bonus. We do want to encourage passengers to take advantage of the specialty restaurants on board the Riviera. Unlike other cruise lines, there is no additional cost to enjoy these intimate dining experiences. We ate at all four and thoroughly enjoyed each meal. We also had the opportunity to have an overnight in Lisbon - a fabulous city. We found both the food and the service outstanding. The buffet was so good that we never went to the main dining room in the evenings. However we tried all the speciality restaurants. Our favourite was Red Ginger which we booked twice. We also loved Jacques - the French restaurant. All these were included in the cruise fare but needed to be booked in advance. However we did have breakfast in the main dining room as the service was so good. One criticism of the food was the in room breakfast. We only had this once and did not really enjoy it. This was our first trip on Oceania, and the Marina staff made this an extremely enjoyable voyage. The specialty restaurants were outstanding. In comparison to another luxury line we have sailed on, we did find the lunch buffet to be limiting for us and not the quality we've experienced previously. Breakfast options had a great variety, but lunch often had scaled down gourmet offerings, but lacked simple, traditional fare. We're not foodies and would have enjoyed a simple, less "heavy" lunch (we usually opted for a salad). The entertainment was also a little "meh". I had been looking forward to dancing, but the band, which my friend and I felt were too much of a "wedding band", played songs that required a partner ( a la disco style). My husband doesn't dance, so I'm always glad when a band plays 50's and 60's songs that can be danced to without a partner. The ports visited were great, although we would have preferred an overnight in Barcelona and skipped Marsielle. The staff on this ship is outstanding and want to ensure guests are having an exceptional experience. I will definitely cruise on Oceania again. Read Less

When I board, the first thing I do is speak to the person who handles allergies and the next is the Chef.I receive the dinner menu for the next evening ahead of time so I can choose what I want. The chef and baker make everything from scratch.It is prepared separately.If My friend likes to eat in the Grille on the 12th floor. The waiters will bring the food from the 6th floor so I can dine with my friend. If I want to eat from the buffet, the chef will show me which foods I can pick from or they will make it separately in the kitchen. The Specialty Restaurants know I'm coming and accommodate even High Tea. Needless to say the food is great, especially the Sea Bass in Red Ginger. I really enjoyed Nerja Caves in Spain.Tthere are usually free shuttles to go into town. Embarkation and disembarkation run very smoothly. We came in the day before staying overnight in the Ritz Carlton Four Seasons in Lisbon...beautiful ...huge chandelier made from live orchids...great experience...booked through Oceania including transfers. We have travelled on several other cruise lines which were less expensive on numerous occasions but never on Oceania. However, chose this cruise because of the itinerary and some good offers. Our cabin was very nice but similar to those we have had on HAL, Princess and even Carnival. Bedding was lovely. However, the service was excellent everywhere. Food was, on the whole, excellent, with plenty of choice though one or two disappointments in the speciality restaurants (most of the courses were wonderful, it was just a matter of either the starter or the main course not quite up to expectations). Temperature on the ship was pleasant all the time, even though we started in fairly cool Lisbon and ended in hot and humid Rio. We have been on cruises where we had to wear jackets indoors at the start or where the a/c was so high it was quite cold in the public rooms. Entertainment was what we expected and catered to a more discerning clientelle, though the song and dance shows performed by the ship's entertainment staff were lively and very well done. Met lots of pleasant passengers and generally had a great time. Like the idea of saving up Big O points to get a nice prize at the end of the cruise rather than a pack of cards or undrinkable champagne. We thought that the Oceania shore excursions looked rather expensive so chose to have the considerable shipboard credit offered to us and make our own shore trip plans. Did put average in the shore excursion box because we were not able to leave this blank. When we have saved up will go on Oceania again! Read Less

We prefer slightly smaller ships but in the same or better class. This was our first exposure to Oceania and we were comparing this experience to Seabourn. The ship was very nice and the Penthouse Suite was just a bit larger than the standard suite on Seabourn. Food was very good overall and the 4 specialty restaurants were a pleasant surprise--we tried all of them and a couple of them more than once. But I did notice they used a lot of salt in their menus--I would have preferred a bit less salt. Cooking classes were fully booked so I did not get to participate in those. Only one show per night was surprising for a ship with 1000 passengers (ship was not full so don't know if this was the norm). Decor and public areas were very nice but it took a bit to find those "special places" to hang out on sea days. Shore excursions on Cape Verde and Recife were marginal. We did an independent excursion from Cadiz to Seville which was much better than the one done by the ship (having compared notes with those who took that one). Overall a very good cruiseline--we would definitely take another Oceania cruise but Seabourn is a bit better. Read Less
