We choose this particular trip for three reasons. First, we specifically wanted a Christmas market trip in Germany. The itinerary and length of trip matched exactly what we had in mind. Second, when looking at various trips the partnership between Scenic and National Geographic had strong appeal for us. Finally, in reviewing the Scenic Cruise line, their amenities and full service approach it all added up to booking with them. Once the initial booking was made it could not have been any more organized and easier. Every detail was captured and managed by Scenic. We chose to make our own airline arrangements but once made they added it to our itinerary and took care of connections from airport to hotel, hotel to ship and back again. It was as close to having private trip planner managing all the details as it could get. One month before we were to sail, we received detailed instructions and recommendations at our home. Once we boarded the plane to travel to Germany, Scenic really took care of everything after that. Arriving at the ship, the embarkation was smooth and fast. It could not have taken more than five minutes to check in and be escorted to our room. Their the staff assigned to us went over all the details of the room, what was available to us and how to contact them. The ship was modern, build in 2015, and immaculately clean. It remained that way throughout the trip. Our junior balcony suite was spacious and comfortable. We had plenty of room for our clothes and to spread out, including a glass lined balcony. The first evening and every evening after that the cruise director went over details for the next days itinerary and options. Each stop had several choices for guests to take advantage of ranging from fully guided tour to complete free time. Everything was completely organized and clear. After that talk, in the evening, a summary of what was said was placed in our room to help us remember. Also, there were countless staff available to answer any questions and help with any issue. On board each day were culturally related entertainment that were tied to the area we were in. Each offering was of high quality and enjoyable. In addition, two National Geographic experts on board gave presentations on the cruise that also were tied to the trip and region. They also accompanied us on our shore excursions and were available for any discussion. Shore entertainment excursions were also of the highest quality in wonderful settings. An example would be a private concert in a palace in Vienna that included an orchestra, opera and waltz. Really breathtaking. All shore excursions whether entertainment or informational were well organized with simple instructions. If informational local guides were well prepared, professional and highly informative. Food and drink on board were excellent and plentiful. As with the trip, we could have as much or as little as we wanted. Always great quality, the chef and other staff were also readily available for us to discuss the menu and quality. If we wanted special orders they were fulfilled with no problem. This was an excellent cruise from start to finish. Professional crew, focused on us having a great time really brought it all together. We would definitely recommend this trip and use Scenic again... Joined friends on a Christmas Market River Cruise. We had booked two nights pre cruise and two nights post cruise in local hotels.Three days before we left home, Scenic changed our hotel from a 5 Star to a 3.5 star hotel. the business office insisted that this was considered an upgrade for us. The two nights were over $650. USD Embarkation as well as disembarkation were very smooth. The cruise director, Richard Gray, could not have been more accommodating. The ship is Lovely, and the cabin adequate. The service level is very high. All the staff were top notch. As there are drought conditions in Europe, the River levels can be an issue. We were prepared pre-cruise, that there could be an alternate itinerary. As it turned out this cruise was the first all season,to make the entire cruise on the river. There is much hype about their special pillows. Problem was that they ran out of the special down pillows on the first day. There is also much hype with regards to the cuisine. They should tone that down a bit. The buffets are good. Much selection for breakfast and lunch. You also have an option of ordering of a "special menu". Menu items were not freshly prepared. In general there is an issue of cold food. If there is a special menu offering Eggs Benedict, it is a reasonable expectation that the dish will be freshly prepared. That was not the case. The eggs were cold and overcooked. The food needs help. Read Less

It looked luxurious and was all inclusive, albeit very expensive. Paperwork from Scenic was very thin and confusing. Ship was changed a week or so beforehand to an older vessel when low water on the Danube became a problem. The ship change was no issue in itself but it was clear that the low water was going to cause huge disruption. We hardly moved for the first days and then had four days when we couldn't do most of things we had paid for including Vienna and Budapest. Guests were offered flights home or bus tours and hotels: the latter was not what we had paid for so we chose the former but before flights could be arranged the ship sailed on - for a bit. Each day then was chaos with constantly changing plans. Eventually we sailed all through the nights so didn't see much of the Danube and arrived in Budapest at one in the morning and left the ship at nine to fly home. Scenic should have cancelled this trip and refunded the money or offered alternatives. Their emphasis was to get the ship to a destination from where it could meet their cruising schedules. We are still in discussion about compensation but so far have been offered a surly 17% refund. I cannot recommend Scenic since although the ship was lovely and the food very good but not outstanding, and low water in itself beyond their control, the way they have handled things afterwards was very poor. This is all rather sad since Scenic could have done themselves a lot of good by immediately offering a 50% refund or a discount on another cruise. Read Less

This is actually a review of the Jasper which was subbed for this itinerary, the ships are identical. We chose Scenic based on reviews, the itinerary, their cruise guarantee (which really paid off) and the all inclusive price. Our interruption started on Day 3 in to 4 when instead sailing to Passau we stayed in Regensburg due to low water levels. We toured Salzberg on Day4 from Regensburg, a minor inconvenience with a slightly longer bus ride. That night we were informed that we would not be moving. We had the choice of staying on the boat and taking our chances, leaving the cruise for good and getting a refund or taking a bus to Melk and the Abbey the next day and staying in a hotel. We chose that option. About 20 people left for good and another 30 or so stayed on the boat. The next day was the biggest inconvenience, with a long bus ride to Melk and a night in a hotel. Fortunately that night we were informed that after a bus tour to Vienna the next day (and a wonderful concert at the Lichtenstein Palace that night) we would be meeting the ship again as they did a dam release and the ship was under way. We rejoined the boat that night to an enthusiastic "welcome back" and sailed to Bratislava the next day. When we disembarked, the ship took off to make up time and rejoined it that night by bus. The final day we sailed in to Budapest and they let us tour Budapest in the morning and come back to ship for lunch. Given the circumstances beyond their control, Scenic could not have handled things better. Our wonderful Cruise Director worked tirelessly to keep the itinerary going and the staff went out of their way to keep us in good spirits. We received a refund of several hundred dollars a day for the four days we were inconvenienced. Overall the ship and the staff were wonderful. Service was excellent. The cabin was spacious, modern and comfortable. Food was consistently good to excellent. Evenings in the lounge were a lot of fun. Our fellow passengers were great travelling companions, especially after the few complainers left the cruise after the fourth night! Tours were well organized with wonderful guides. I would highly recommend Scenic as a cruise line. They are pricey, but once on board you truly never have to touch your wallet. Read Less

Gems of The Danube is marketed as 3 days in Prague and then join the Jasper in Nuremberg for a Danube cruise to Budapest. We signed up in August of 2017, paid and arrived in Prague on time. The transportation provided from airport to Prague was delayed because some passengers were late. The area is small, hot, no explanations, no offer to move us to an air-conditioned motor coach, no offer of bottled water - nothing. My husband inquired of a cab and our inquiry was ignored. We finally got transportation to Prague and arrived at the hotel. The accommodations in Prague are nice, The Imperial, typical European style hotel. We were there for 3 nights. The first night there was a welcome meeting with a class of wine and a walking tour of the area. The other Scenic sponsored tour while in Prague was again, a walking tour. No worries we hired a car and had a wonderful tour of Prague. There were signs early on that something was amiss. The Scenic staff were all a bit vague regarding details. Our guide said he needed to leave ahead of the group to meet other travelers and passed us off to another woman working for Scenic. She rode the coach with us and informed us that morning that we would not be going to Nuremberg and we would not be on the Jasper. She assured us that the only difference between the Jasper and our newly assigned ship would be the name, Jade. The water levels were low and we would not go to Nuremberg, but to Regensburg. None of the travelers seemed concerned, until guide and driver got lost looking for the ship. When we finally arrived we had to walk about 300 yards along an unpaved path to reach the Jade, which was not exactly in Regensburg, but we could glimpse the skyline if we tried. We went to the lounge area and experienced the most cursory greeting from the hotel manager, captain, and cruise director. It's clear to us all now that the company was well aware that we would not be on the ship long and they were all noticeably nervous and in the instance of the Cruise Director, very short tempered. Those on the Diamond Deck are invited to dine at Table La Rive, that is if you are on the ship long enough to enjoy such an invitation. The sundeck was only opened for use on the evening that we were told we would be enjoying the rest of the trip from a bus! Check out my pics of the sundeck. Good Timing. The idea of a butler for every cabin, forget it. These folks are far too busy with the duties of being waiters and bartenders to actually assist in your cabin. Those Scenic spaceship balcony, not! It's a tiny window and when you open it the air-conditioning immediately shuts off and you swelter. If you are looking for group meals, long lines, buffets style dining, long bus rides and cruise companies that prefer to keep you in the dark, then this is your company. We rode on a bus for nearly 8 hours on our way from Vienna to Budapest, we passed our hotel 3 times so we could see the sights from a bus window. The group lunch was at a Hungarian park that our city guide described as his children's favorite playground. he asked if we noticed the wooden fort and castle on the playground, his children love it. No thank you for me and my group. Read Less

We chose this cruise due to it's interesting combination of ports as well as the date. This was our second river cruise - our first was on Viking. We chose Scenic for our second cruise for several reasons: The enrichment activities seemed interesting The electric-assist bikes The potential to do tours on our own using the GPS devices (Scenic Tailormade) Overall we thought the cruise features as well as the cruise staff indicated a good intent, but execution was lacking in several areas. In particular they had significant issues at dinner. Since dinner is very important on cruises overall rating reflects issues in this area. We spent 1 night at a hotel in Nuremberg to recover from jet-lag. The hotel selected by Scenic (Le Meridian) was in an excellent location, allowing easy access to the old city. Embarkation was very smooth. Embarkation was smooth as to be expected on a river-cruise. We were guided to the lounge to wait for check-in. My wife and I noticed we were not offered champagne like other who had arrived on a large bus but we didn't feel it was a big deal. Excursions were similar to what we had seen on Viking. Bus transportation was efficient. The guides were very knowledgeable but tended to go longer/slower than my wife and like but we realize they have to cater to all types. Scenic did an excellent job accommodating those who could not walk well without slowing down the others. As an example, in one venue there was a long walk to the bus. They had a van to shuttle those who needed it to the bus which was nice. We enjoyed the ScenicEnrich concert. The small orchestra was very talented and the singers/dancers good as well. We also enjoyed the night sailing in Budapest to see the lights. In Regensburg we tried the Scenic Tailormade to do a self-guided tour. The concept is intriguing - it shows a map of the town with the interesting sites. When you get to a site you can select it and get commentary. The reality was that the commentary was very silly and irritating. During a day cruise the cruise director put on the commentary over the loudspeakers and this was much better so perhaps it was just the commentary for Regensburg. It was nice seeing Nuremberg but in the end may not have been worth it - when sailing away from Nuremberg you are in a canal for a day with not much to see and only the front of the sundeck open due to low bridges. Breakfast and lunch were served buffet style, and there was a lot of different choices. We also saw wait staff respond well to cruisers with dietary needs. I would rate the quality of the food good for these meals. They insisted on serving coffee to everyone at breakfast, and sometimes it could take a while to get coffee (up to 10 min) when you first sat down with your food. Toward the end of the cruise we would find a waiter with the coffee and ask him to serve us. I've never had to do that at a Denny's much less what is supposed to be a nice eating atmosphere. The coffee machine in the lounge made excellent Cafe Americano and a couple of times I was tempted to walk over there to get my coffee! Service and quality of food at dinner, however, became a big irritation on this cruise. On the whole the appetizers and desserts were good to very good. The entrees and soups were VERY bland. The worse part of dinner was the wait to get the entree. There were many cases where 2 tables would be seated at approximately at the same time, but one table would be served much faster, to the point where one table would be finishing dessert and the other hadn't been served their entree. It really came to a head on the night the chef-recommended entree was chateaubriand. We had to wait ~30 minutes to get the entree. The steak was cooked to a correct doneness, but had no spice (not even salt), was very dry and chewy. It was the worst steak I have had in my life. I asked other passengers about this and they said similar things. The quality of service at dinner ended up being talked about during the cruise because it had become so irritating over the week. We met some nice people from the UK and noticed they always sat at the same table. When we asked why they replied they seemed to get the food faster there! On the last night of the cruise a woman walked over to another table to check if they had received their entrees as her table had been waiting so long. I've never seen that before on a cruise. In one case my wife ordered coffee after dinner - after waiting 15 minutes we left. Note that even when service was OK dinners lasted between 90 minutes and 2 hours so I am not expecting fast-food service! I believe the issue may be the kitchen having to support two distinct menus - the main dining room and Table Le Rive. Service was better at Portobellos when we ate there though the food really wasn't as special as they seemed to think it was. I spoke to the hotel manager about the service situation and he was very open to the feedback but in the end something needs to be done as it became a big irritation. We also saw slow service at times in the lounge. The waiters were working hard, and the bartender was fast, but it would take a while to be served when you first arrived. There just didn't seem to be enough wait staff. I started going directly the the bar to get quicker service. Quality of liquor choice was good (eg, single malt Scotch included Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie). The cruise director seemed very friendly when giving his port talks. I would say however that he tended to over-sell things like the food was unbelievably good and the excursions life changing. It's better to undersell and over-deliver. In private conversation he could seem off-putting and gave the impression you were interrupting what he was doing. I understand his position is difficult and it could be a cultural issue but other passengers remarked about this as well. He did arrange a private tour of Budapest for my wife and I, and that went fine. Read Less

We booked a Junior suite for a special celebration. This was supposed to be a joint birthday celebration. Failed in every sense. We were supposed to have a butler who would bring tea/coffee in the morning and be there for evening drinks on your terrace. On day 2 we had not seen a butler, we asked about the service at reception, later he knocked and asked what we wanted, quite abruptly, we asked about his service, he showed us how to work the shower, we never saw him again! At meals there was supposed to be a wine list, we were never offered one, I noticed different wines at the entrance to the dining area and asked to have a bottle of one of them, a bottle appeared sometime later, quite reluctantly. The cruise was offered with "Fine " dining. The food was ok but was not fine dining. The two special evening meals included in our price were poor and not as good as the general dining menu. This was a brand new ship and our cabin was fine, service from the general crew was fine. entertainment was fine and port and shore trips were good. Overall the value was extremely poor, we paid £7,500 for the cruise and a pre-cruise stay in Prague, our flight to Prague was delayed and there was no one there when we arrived. We all had to wait for somebody to appear, which they did about half an hour later. If we had this cruise again it would NOT be with Scenic. We paid for a luxury cruise this was not it. Read Less
